here is the old thread (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=711574)
Well im not sure if this is just gross promotion or what...but it is kind of lifestyle so here i go!
My band (Place of Indigo) is playing on Thursday night @ the Swan Basement. We are an Indie band with good solid tunes (we think :P) and our supporting bands are very good as well!
Doors open at 8pm, we play at 11.05...and its a lot more fun than waiting in the line at clubba!
Check us out anyway...tell us what you think!

santa fe and annies are pretty shit in my opinion.
the tacos arent bad at panchos actually and for the typical mexican food i would say panchos is better than the other 2.
my favourite would still have to be flying taco, but it is a much more limited menu there.
the little mexican place is too inconsistent for me to recommend, but some of the food is pretty good there.

haha i suppose i can always dream. unfortunately i dont think i have the writing skills needed. it does break my heart tho when i read some shocking reviews by ppl who dont have a clue what they are on about. community newspapers are the best example of this.
what i actually would like to do in a few years is to perhaps invest in the food industry and be involved in the conceptuaising phase of ventures but not do the day to day running of it.

Yes. Technically it's essentially tomato sauce but with more sugar and vinegar. If you try both side by side you will notice the difference.
There are a lot of people who use the terms interchangably though.
Sanj
November 19th, 2008, 02:41 AM
a quick search on the net reveals that it is quite a difficult thing to work out. if the explanation of ketchup vs tomato sauce is written by an american then they say different things to what someone in england of aust would say by the looks of it. in my opinion the only way to tell for sure would be to look at the ingredients list on the back of a bottle of tomato sauce Vs ketchup.
it is interesting tho acc. how did u figure this out?
acc521
November 19th, 2008, 02:44 AM
The evidence is conflicting however for me actual experience of the taste of various brands has been enough to confirm the difference.
Sanj
November 19th, 2008, 02:51 AM
fair enough.
it is interesting tho cos tomato sauce happens to be one of those products with a fair bit of umami in it which is why it is used in some dishes as well (often without ppl originally knowing about umami etc).

*Hot off the press*
It's now, well, semi-official: Star Anise's David Coomer will be opening his new restaurant, tentatively named Pata Negra, in Nedlands next February.
"It will be Moorish-inspired, so will have a tapas focus," David told me today. "But it won't be exclusively tapas. There'll also be quail, octopus, tajines and vegetables roasted in the massive wood-fired oven. Most of the influences will be coming from Spain, Morocco and the Middle East. Our sous chef, Matt Stone, will be heading over there to run it and will be joined by Kurt Sampson. It will have a more casual, user-friendly feel than Star Anise".
Stay tuned..

We know that Woolworths are the major retail tenant anchoring this development and I'm quite sure this is also the case for Raine Sq. Surely three Woolie's and no Coles is not ideal and not good for competition for the growing city market. Unless Raine Sq is a Big W which could be interesting. I know Brisbane has a Big W in the CBD.

Myer should bring back their foodhall that they used to have in the basement. Would be good competition for DJ's foodhall. Maybe they should have it with a cafe/restaurant on the top level with windows and views. Bit like Peter Jones, Harvey Nichols or John Lewis in London.

Target is more 'clothing' oriented whereas BigW/Kmart have a wider range of everything else. Even BigW is better than Kmart when it comes to variety. In fact Kmart has started copying BigW in many ways (recent shop refurbishments and changes in stock and more focus on 'bulk' items etc) as in recent times Big W's model has been more successful than Kmart.

Quite right Dillaz. It is interesting to note the changes happening right now with these major players. Target is trying to position itself above Kmart and Big W, closer toward the Myer level without actually getting there. You will see that through the odd "exclusive designer offers" they are beginning to play with.
Myer on the other hand are actually actively reducing the prestige level of their stores in an attempt to stop competing directly with DJs as they have realised it is a battle they will not win. Do not be surprised if in a few years time Myer and Target get close to meeting in the middle.
Having said that, the most successful of the lot is Big W which prides itself on its position as the lowest rung on the ladder. Cheap product, low prices. Its what they do and they do it well.
As for Kmart, they don't even know where they want to be (or even IF they want to be) but they take position a little bit above Big W and a little bit below Target. Many consider this the dead zone of large scale retail and I would not be surprised to see Kmart as a brand exit the market in the very near future.
But I agree with Dillaz in regard to the City Target, it just needs a reno to spruce it up and my intel says it's going to get it in the near future (as well as the rest of Perth Central).
My 2c worth anyway.

With Myer now being its own entity, Target is the "high end" retailer in the Coles group and K-Mart the "low end" retailer. I think you will see Target move up a notch and K-Mart more closely aligned to compete with Big W.
I don't agree with your comments about Myer unless you know something I don't. Everything I have read since Myer became its own entity was that they wanted to compete with DJ at the high end.

Haha. Nah i'm all for choice so I know where you're coming from, but walmart basically comes into an area, run at a loss for 5 or 10 years until all competition (like hardware stores, delis, anything locally owned) in the area is dead and buried.
All the money gets sucked up from the area around it and sent back to arkansas or wherever the headquarters is, and helps the walton family keep 5 places in the top 20 richest people in the world, whilst local working in the store get very ordinary pay and conditions.

The moment they combine a Woolworths and a Big W is the day we will have a Wal-Mart. Big W looks so similar to Wal-Mart they are almost indistinguishable. Definitely some cross business relations going on. I actually felt at home in a Wal-Mart cause it was so similar. Though I do not like what Wal-Mart does to communities and small businesses, not that coles and Woolworths are much better.

Small, stylish, big 3" screen, good feature set, simple to use, excellent quality, and a good 28mm wide zoom lens which comes in very handy (that most cameras in this price/size range don't have). If you give me your e-mail I can send you some proper photos to show you what it can do.
From what I can tell, the replacement has actually improved on the one I bought. This just came out about a month ago so you might even be able to get one like mine (860 IS) for quite a bit cheaper if anyone is trying to clear out old stock.
Also keep in mind Canons use SD cards (can get a 4gb for $22 from JB) as opposed to Sony's that use a memory stick (4gb costs $60)

im pretty sure u do need tickets as there is some dj from warp records playing as well. im sure they will be available at the door for around 20 bucks.
we always see things like this happening in places like melbourne and say why dont we have it in perth, so i think we should support it.
Yeah that's what I meant. At the "door" sales are fine. Good chance I'll make it.

Hmmm...giving out my email...are you gonna use it properly? :shifty: LOL is it possible to just PM me some links or photos?
I prefer something a bit more sleek looking, which is why I favour Sony designs. I have a Sony laptop so I know just how annoying/expensive their products can be. But I'm willing to give it a look over, if you say it's really good.

http://a.img-dpreview.com/reviews/SonyT300/Images/sony_t300_3qtr-001.jpg
The Cybershot DSC-T300 is the second generation of touch-screen ultra compacts from electronics colossus Sony. Because it is built around a very small 1/2.3" sensor, Sony has been able to cram a 5x zoom into the slimline body without it ever having occasion to protrude. It's also packed full of the latest special modes and functions, including 'smile shutter,' that only takes a photo once your subject is smiling. The real stand-out feature of this camera is the huge, 16:9 aspect ratio touch screen that covers the entire reverse of the body. So is this beginning of the revolution that will free us from the the hegemony of the four-way controller, or is there a good reason that most cameras are covered in buttons?
Before getting on to that question, let's start with the headline features:
- 10.1 Megapixels and 5x zoom
- Super Steady Shot image stabilization
- Dynamic range optimization
- 3.5" touch-screen control system
http://a.img-dpreview.com/reviews/SonyT300/Images/allroundview-001.jpg
http://a.img-dpreview.com/reviews/SonyT300/Images/sony_t300_inhandfr-001.jpghttp://a.img-dpreview.com/reviews/SonyT300/Images/sony_t300_inhandRr-001.jpg
It's refreshing to encounter a 5x zoom camera that has no aspirations to looking like a DSLR. Instead the T300 is one of a handful of 'card' cameras that make perfect sense sitting in a pocket or handbag, but make you look a bit funny when held aloft to compose a shot. In fact, "Are you sure that's a camera?" was one of the comments that it prompted and, in fairness, it doesn't look like, and can't readily be held like, a traditional camera. It feels remarkably solid and well built considering its size though. That huge touch screen will leave you as adept at polishing as at taking photographs, however.
The T300 has a lot of features that will benefit its target audience. Image stabilization and dynamic range optimization will help produce better photographs for the user that is thinking more about capturing the moment rather than assessing the implications of the scene's lighting. There are also some useful post-processing effects (In-camera unsharp masking), as well as the flagrantly gimmicky ones (Apply 'Happy faces').
The touch screen interface has had a lot of thought put into it and, although it takes a little practice, doesn't leave you hankering for a four-way controller. The touch detection autofocus mode is also excellent, giving a high degree of speed and flexibility without having to leave the comfort of the point-and-shoot face detect mode. Unfortunately, its carry-anywhere, seize-the-shot credentials are severely undermined by its poor flash range/metering that can leave your friends looking like tomatoes nailed to a blackboard and a battery life that will have you constantly searching for somewhere to charge it.

dpreview is a great site - use it all the time.
These are the main things that turned me off the Sony:
# expensive memory sticks
# Noise reduction that reduces image quality at all settings
# Terrible battery life
# lack of wide angle lens (seriously you don't realise just how much this expands your shooting options until you use it)
# T500 (which has replaced the T300 and is the IS870's equivilent) is $150 more than the Canon

yup. from what i know kfc are not renewing the franchise agreements they have with the guy who owns hungry jacks and who also has most of the wa kfc franchises. basically they are letting all the agreements run down and then will do it themselves i believe. the franchisee over here even tried to convince the government to get involved.

Jack Cowin inspires WA franchise inquiry
Monday, 5 November 2007
Jacqui Walker
The Western Australian Government has announced the terms of reference for the inquiry into franchising in WA.
The inquiry, which will be chaired by franchisee Chris Bothams, manager of the South East Metro Small Business Centre, follows cries for help from Jack Cowin’s Competitive Foods.
Competitive Foods, worth an estimated $350 million, operates 46 KFC franchises in Western Australia, four in the Northern Territory, as well as 300 Hungry Jack’s outlets around Australia.
SmartCompany reported last week that the world’s biggest fast-food company, US-based Yum Foods International, which owns the KFC brand, is refusing to renew the franchise licenses held by Competitive Foods in Western Australia.
Labor MP Paul Papalia told WA Parliament last week that Yum Foods had offered to buy Competitive Foods’ KFC licences for “significantly less than their market value”.
A spokesman for Competitive Foods told SmartCompany that the offer was rejected but negotiations are continuing. If a deal can’t be reached, Yum will take control of each outlet as its franchise agreement comes to an end. The first licence to expire is the KFC in Rockingham on 19 November.
WA Small Business Minister Margaret Quirk announced the terms of reference of the franchising inquiry on Friday.
The inquiry's terms of reference are to:
* Review the adequacy of existing legislative provisions, both state and federal.
* Identify whether emerging trends in the franchising industry disclose patterns of unconscionable conduct that may not be covered under existing laws.
* Examine whether existing remedies available to franchisees are adequate and, where appropriate, recommend changes.
* Review existing practice in other jurisdictions, Australia and internationally, on unconscionable conduct and renewal of licences.
The inquiry would invite written public submissions, with public hearings scheduled for metropolitan and regional areas over the coming months.
"This inquiry is about fairness in franchise arrangements," Quirk said in a media statement. "I am concerned that existing franchise arrangements in WA may not offer sufficient protection or information to franchise operators who may find themselves in a similar situation.”
David Beddall, chair of the Franchisee Association of Australia, says it is interesting that when a large multi-outlet franchisee asks for action it gets some. “Small individual franchisees face these problems on a daily basis.”
His organisation wrote to Labor and the Government on the day the election was called, seeking a federal parliamentary inquiry into franchising.
He says state law reform would create a situation where each jurisdiction has its own laws. “We don’t want to follow US model where there is different laws in different states, adding to complexity.”
The franchising industry is currently subject to the mandatory Franchise Code under the Trade Practices Act. Earlier this year, the Federal Government accepted some of the recommendations of the Matthews inquiry.
Chris Bothams, the chairman of the inquiry, has twice been awarded the Western Australian Franchisee of the Year, and in 2002 was named the National Franchisee of the Year.
The inquiry will report on 31 March.
Jack Cowin’s dispute with Yum Restaurants over the future of the KFC franchises in Western Australia is not the first time that he has fought an international franchisor for the right to keep operating his franchise business in Australia.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Cowin went into battle with Burger King, the owner of the Hungry Jack’s franchise in Australia. Burger King tried to enter Australia in its own right selling Burger King franchises to third parties and seeking to terminate its franchise agreement with Cowin.
After years of litigation, in mid-2003 Cowin and Burger King settled, with Burger King agreeing to re-brand 81 Burger King restaurants in New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory and Victoria as Hungry Jack's to create a national network of about 300 restaurants.

^^There is a whole story behind that. KFC is not exiting the WA market.
The KFC's in WA and 4 in the NT are owned by Jack Cowin's Competitive Foods. That is same owner/operator of Hungry Jacks, Domino's Pizza, Lone Star Steakhouse and surprisingly Yoshinoya (which he has let idle with 1 store). Jack went up against Burger King a while ago and caused Burger King USA to start operating their own stores on the east coast to compete directly against Hungry Jacks.
Well I guess Yum Restaurants (owner of KFC) have learned from BK's mistakes and are instead just going to let the KFC franchises expire and buy out each WA store individually as they come on the market.

Acc, in reply to your PM (I've reached the 100 limit), try Photoshop CS3. That's what I use and it's fantastic. Doesn't reduce the quality of your images and if you know how to use it properly, your photos can look really awesome. Take a look at alvse's stuff for example. That kind of clarity and sharpness in colour can be achieved through PS CS3.
And in regards to the camera, I will check out both. Don't hate me if I end up getting the Sony ok

Due to the results of World War II there are currently two parts, the Carl Zeiss AG located in Oberkochen with important subsidiaries in Aalen, Göttingen and Hallbergmoos (near Munich) and Carl Zeiss GmbH located in the foundation city Jena.
The organisation is named after one of its founders, the German optician Carl Zeiss (1816–1888).
Carl Zeiss is the premier company of the Zeiss Gruppe, one of the two large divisions of the Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung. The Zeiss Gruppe is located in Heidenheim and Jena.

If was going to buy a Sony I would get the T77. Supposedly it has the best image quality that the T series has seen for a while and is also the slimmest in the range. And it's $130 cheaper at retail.
The wifi is more of a gimmick than a particularly useful feature for most. Especially if you have a Vaio laptop like you said and you can just plug the memory stick just in.

From a layman's point of view it's essentially the same Miensie. It just means you can xfer data between camera and PC without any 'wires'.
The difference between Infrared and Wifi to put it simply is that with infrared the camera should be facing your PCs IR port and be quite close (10-20cm) whereas with Wifi both devices don't have to be next to each other just the same room/house/vicinity.

Vic Park pair brings out The Imp
Food & Wine: 20-November-08 by Anna Moreau
DELIGHTS: Kristan Roche (left) and Chris Sweeney want to bring back quality, inexpensive food on the menu with their new venue, The Imp. Photo: Grant Currall
HOSPITALITY entrepreneurs Kristan Roche and Chris Sweeney are taking Victoria Park a step closer to the vibe of Mount Lawley or Leederville with their first venue, The Imp.
The little cafe-cum-bar was celebrating its sixth week of business when Gusto chatted with the enthusiastic owners, who met while working together in the early days of Cino to Go on King Street, under the tutorage of Geoff Hayward.
The Imp, which refers to the naughty temptations you could fall prey to as you step in the cafe, is located in a former kebab shop at 863 Albany Highway.
Mr Sweeney, who has lived in Victoria Park for 15 years, says there is great potential for the suburb to grow even though there are still more businesses than "destination shops" in the area.
Mr Roche believes the area will grow to be the equal of Perth's top shopping strips in the next few years.
"Victoria Park is the last suburb that hasn't been exploited like Mount Lawley and Leederville...even Mount Hawthorn has a cafe strip now. It's a great area [Victoria Park] with heaps of restaurants," Mr Roche says.
Messrs Roche and Sweeney took over the shop in May last year with the plan to set up a venue that would attract a flow of people all day with breakfast, lunch, coffee and cakes and dinner services.
While counter service will be the go during the day, dinner will have table service and offers a choice of tapas.
The Imp is currently BYO but the owners say they will apply for a restaurant licence in the New Year.
Mr Roche told Gusto they're trying to keep the menu reasonably priced - the tapas menu won't cost over $12 - and build a clientele that comes back several times a week, rather than occasionally.
"You don't have to pay top dollar to get good food...sometimes I hate going out to restaurants because of what they charge," Mr Roche says.
Among the items on The Imp tapas menu are: flat bread with tapenade; deep fried stuffed Jalapenos with raspberry coulis; and crab and goat's cheese empanadas.
The menu changes every four weeks.
The owners say working with Geoff Hayward at Cino to Go was a great way to learn the industry and gave them inspiration to run their own business.
"We have a lot of respect for how he [Geoff Hayward] runs his business, and looking at how he does things gave me inspiration," Mr Roche says.
And they're not the only ones who became inspired after working with Mr Hayward; the founder of MilkD and co founder of Soto, Lorena Tati, had a stint with Mr Hayward as did Alex Cuccovia, who set up Cantina 663 with Michael Forde in Mount Lawley.
There are more plans in the pipeline for The Imp with projects to expand the venue in the near future.

Sanj, what was that place that you like? Is it Lido's in Cottesloe? What is the address, what time do they shut on weeknights, what is the dress code for dinner and is there a website that I can look at their menu?
ummmm.... ok... no...
Well, I have the Vaio laptop and a desktop. Don't really use the Vaio anymore, that was more for when I was at uni.
But thanks for that acc, I do appreciate it. That's 3 very good points you've put across. I want something that produces good images, isn't too ridiculously expensive and is pretty :)
THANK YOU SAMBOY! From one layman to another eh? I get it now

ive actually been to the imp twice. i like what they are going for but the food isnt quite on point yet, not too far off tho. had some pretty good whitebait that was unfortunately a bit soggy etc. still, i like what they are going for and ive had a few good chats with chris, one of the owners. ive actually run into him at fuji the last 3 times ive been there for dinner and each time he has said that they are really busy and doing well, which is good to see.
miensie - il lido is on marine pde next to il gelato. it is on the corner, close to indiana i believe. dress is casual. last i checked their menu wasnt available on a website. what i sometimes do is to ask a restaurant to fax me a copy of their menu if possible, u could try that i guess if necessary. no idea what time they close, their number is 92861111. another good option is galileo in shenton park, which i can recommend wholeheartedly as ive probably been there around 15 times. definitely my favourite italian restaurant in perth.

yeah whitebait can be a nice little snack, not a main course tho. im seeing it served at more places. even il lido has it.
old canton - went there last night, was disappointed. pretty limited menu after the food had been talked up a fair bit on my initial visit. not a single vegetarian option so my mate couldnt have anything. $9.50 for a bombay and tonic, which completely put me off because that surely is taking the piss. they brought out some free food which was ok actually. the chicken tasted a lot like karaage but wasnt battered and so had a different texture. taste was ok tho. also, i liked that little outdoor bit but it did seem disjointed from the inside - murals etc outside but the inside was a whole different vibe.
still i do think there is potential, but the menu needs a lot of work and the drink prices need to come down a bit.

yeah jeans are fine at either place.
galileo is run by una and vince, but ive only met vince briefly. i think they both used to work at campo di fiori but i could be wrong.
really good rustic italian food. nothing ground breaking but no cliched/generic dishes there either, ie no carbonara, bolognese etc.
a lot of their dishes are cooked in the woodfired oven. a smallish menu that has quite a few daily specials. their carpaccio is really good along with a whole host of other dishes that i could recommend. from memory, no main is over $30 which is really good for perth, considering the quality of the food. una is really helpful too and in the past when i havent been able to decide she has given me a half serve of 2 mains etc. she has also pre-ordered some meat for me when i have called her up wanting to have her woodfired piglet special. little touches like this are hard to get elsewhere. i always leave there with a smile on my face. on occasion service can be slow but it is fine the majority of the time. the only very slight criticism i have of the place is that the food has sometimes been slightly over seasoned, but im talking maybe 3 out of 25 meals or so (including takeaways that i have done)

$9.50 - what a joke!
This is an inevitability of our current licencing laws though. Only those with significant $$$ are being able to open places up and the inevitably are aiming at the "high end" with prices to match. 1907, The George, Old Canton - all high end places.

I think there's some weight to the argument that more expensive drink prices limit binge drinking on a premises, so you don't get so many drunk dickheads ruining your night. Plus it encourages an older and more sophisticated crowd. However I do like to get value for my $$ especially since I don't have a lot of it. I'd still go for a few drinks there if the atmosphere is right.

nah u would be fine. what u worried about? paparazzi? one is in shenton park, the other in cottesloe. there are bound to be some ppl dressed up a bit but neither place is formal. il lido is probably a little bit more casual but that would be due to its beachside vibe i think.

What a joke. Even in HK a night out cost me just over half of what it cost here.
What I find interesting is when you look at reviews for places in London, Hong Kong, NYC etc. You find a place that is criticised for being too expensive and then realise that the "expensive" place is no more and usually a bit cheaper than an "expensive" place here, and like Sanj said, the quality of the venue over there is much higher.

That's the point though isn't it? The places here aren't exactly comparable yet the prices are higher. If you find a comparable place, the prices here are significantly more expensive.
I blame the restrictive, red tape ridden, costly licensing regime and people's willingness in this city to throw money away. If I owned a venue and could get away with charging those kind of prices, I know I would.

jagerbombs are at such a price moreso to deter binge drinking more than anything...if you think about it, they are getting a shot of imported 40 percent liquer, and half a can of redbull. so lets say 8.50 and 2.50...if we look at the going price for a shot and half can...that extra 4-6 bucks is the deterrant.
you wouldnt believe how many times i lined up 15+ jagerbombs when i was working at the raffles...its easy to see that if it seems cheap, people will go crazy with them

Have you ever thought that prices rise due to the operating costs increasing? Could you please give me some examples of 'most places outside of Perth are realistic when it comes to beverages'? And don't use overseas examples because you can't compare due to exchange rates and different liquor taxations. Because honestly I've found alcohol is generally the same price everywhere, its more dependent on the venue and it's proximity rather then the city that it is contained in.

Well I haven't been over east for a while now so I don't know.
But almost every pub you go to here now charges around 10 bucks for a pint. Drink prices have been steadily going up for the past couple of years now.

Okay at $10 for a pint, Perth does seem a bit too expensive. I know I can go to James Squire Brewhouse on Kings Street Wharf [ie on the Harbour], and it is one of the rare establishments in NSW that serve pints, and that is $8. But saying that you could go to a bar (such as Justin Hemmes's Ivy) on Saturday night and pay the same price for a schooner (425mL glass). Generally though a schooner costs probably anywhere from $3.8 in a suburban pub or RSL to $4-6 dollars in an inner or city bar. Depending on the establishment it is and what time of day it is.
I guess labour costs and the lack of pokies also must drive up prices. Many establishments over here would go broke without their pokies, but at the same time the pokies subsidies in many bars and pubs help keep the general drink prices down through more competition. WA is the only state without pokies and it also seems to be the state with the most expensive drinks?
ryan79

Well IF pokies were the case, which they may well be, then I'd much rather pay more for my drinks.

Now I'm getting borderline 'gay' so I'll shut up :)
Hmm...I'll have to check it out.
Next door to what? Rubi Shoes? Or next door to where it used to be?

Rubi Shoes is a new franchise only 6 months or so old and operated by the same people as Cotton On. Judging from the interweb it seems to be female only.

Yeah 3 stores next to each other - Ruby- Dotti - Something new. If I'm not mistaken the old Dotti on Murray st is being turned into the Levis store. Someone here mentioned that.

samboy- are you talking about the corner shop that used to be a day spa?
Correct., that's now Ruby and everytime I've walked past it, it's been packed! That's the front section anyway. The back section along barrack street has been closed off and possibly leasing separately.
Bloody hell I'm on a roll today. I feel like Miensie with the multi quotes. Sanj I bet you can't do that...I dare ya.

Sanj, I was just at Shenton Park. Is Galileo's in between Shenton Park Shopping Centre and Star Anise? Somewhere in the middle of the two; near the salmon brick coloured place?

LOL thanks for that samboy - you're really getting into it now aren't you? Embedding first images then streetviews; doing multi-quotes...what next? :D
It looks a bit different to that now. I want to know where it is exactly :D
Hey Sanj, while we're on the topic of Star Anise, what kinda food is it? I personally don't like the taste of star anise...I know you rate it though.
Sanj
November 25th, 2008, 07:52 AM
well star anise isnt my favourite spice but it is necessary i guess in some food. i dont mind it. i assume u mean that u dont liek the taste of the spice star anise, as opposed to the restaurant?
ive only been once to the restaurant star anise, i would like to go again.
basically it is the sort of food that was pioneered by cheong liew at the grange in adelaide and made very popular by neil perry at rockpool. it is hard to pigeonhole but i guess modern australian is what ppl used to call it altho the term has been bastardized.
basically star anise is very modern in the presentation of food, in the fact that it is not heavy and in techniques used but it also has an asian influence running thru the food. david coomer (the chef/owner of star anise) is a fan of marrying asian flavours with modern "western" techniques of cooking, like neil perry in sydney or even ppl like ezard in melbourne (very good restaurant too).
for me the food at star anise was very good but the service did not match the food. it certainly wasnt crap service, but in my opinion it was no where near as high a standard as the food.
they do ala carte as well as degustation so u dont have to sit thru the whole degustation if u not in the mood etc
it is hard to describe but the best i can do is to say modern techniques and presentation with a distinct asian influence.
worth trying.
