jammy97 November 24th, 2008, 06:01 AM I couldn't find a seperate thread for Mangalore Airport. Since, it happens to be on the expansion and may get an international staus, I thought I coul start this thread.
Please post news and pics of the airport, especially about the ongoing construction of the new terminal.
Mods, feel free to move this thread if required.
jammy97 November 24th, 2008, 06:03 AM Mangalore’s new airport terminal will increase area’s business potential
The beginning of 2009 is likely to provide another facility to the civil aviation infrastructure Mangalore. The new integrated terminal building, being built at Kenjar, near the city, is likely to become operational in the first quarter of 2009.
The new facility is expected to provide increased avenues for exploring the potential in various sectors of the air transport system in the region. Representatives from trade and industry and non-resident Indians feel that potential exists in areas such as air-cargo handling and operation of flights to various international destinations. (At present, Air India Express connects Mangalore airport with Gulf destinations such as Dubai, Muscat, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Doha, Sharjah and Kuwait.)
However, it is essential for the airport to get an international airport status to explore the full potential of the new terminal building. At present, the airport has Customs airport status for passenger movement.
Mr Srinivas S. Kamath, President of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), told Business Line that the new terminal building would provide enough business opportunities in various sectors. At present, the operation of international flights is limited to some Gulf countries alone. He felt that there is good potential for operation of flights once a week to some other major international destinations. Operations to Malaysia and Singapore can also be thought of.
According to Mr Rajesh Sequera, Co-ordinator of the Abu Dhabi-based Karnataka NRI Forum, there are also demands for operating flights to other Gulf centres such as Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam.
The airport, which has completed two years of international operations, has seen a good growth in both passenger and aircraft movements during the period. Most flights to the Gulf sector are flying full every time. International airport status would help bring many more international airlines to Mangalore airport and serve passengers better, Mr Sequera said.
CARGO COMPLEX
Mr Kamath said that there is also scope for exploring increased air cargo movement from the region. The region, which has good potential for generating air cargo, is sending most of such cargoes through the neighbouring airports.
The present terminal building can be converted into a dedicated air-cargo complex, once the new terminal building is put into operation. To begin with, handling perishable goods like vegetables and flowers can be planned. A sizeable number of people from coastal Karnataka, who are residing in Gulf countries, would provide a large customer base for such produce.
Since the region has a number of medical colleges and hospitals, medical tourism can also be widely advertised as one of the USPs of the new facility. The new terminal building would also likely attract specially chartered flights to the region.
Connectivity
Mr L. L. Krishnan, Regional Executive Director (Southern Region), Airports Authority of India (AAI), who was in Mangalore recently, told Business Line that nearly 70 per cent of the work on the new integrated terminal building is complete, and construction of the major structures is over. The terminal building is being built at a cost of Rs 147 crore.
Built on 18,200 square metres of area, the project includes terminal building with two aerobridges, apron and taxiways.
Though the global economic slowdown has hit the aviation sector hard, Mangalore airport has not been affected by it. With the existing terminal building, it has been able to connect to seven destinations in the Gulf region. Mr M. R. Vasudeva, Director, Mangalore Airport, said that international traffic has not been affected by the current global slowdown, and there is good demand from passengers for Gulf-bound flights.

Its ironical that BIAL with higher passenger capacity hasn't gone in for vertical seperation like Mangalore.

With all these new terminals sprawling up , it's very heartening to see that India has finally looked towards infrastructure in big way.
Suncity November 26th, 2008, 03:02 PM Some great updates.
Illusionist November 26th, 2008, 06:13 PM So whats the story behind all this? How come all of sudden we started seeing all our airports getting converted to awesome world class airports.
whatever happened to babudom/pwd work/factory type looking airports of India? what happened to that mentality.?
is it that AAI some day woke up and realized that we need better looking airports not the usual railway station types or did some day some PM realized that we are way far behind?
what is the reason or the man behind it.
all the small airports that i am seeing in this forum look like world class. i know change comes slow in india but this development sneaked up without notice.
krishnancv November 26th, 2008, 07:15 PM ^^ In the 21st century it is a war between the states to prove which is much more industrialized. After the Liberalisation and privatisation moves in 1991 India saw a large influx of FDI but realized only at the end of the century that infrastructure is a key area that needs to be developed to keep the pace continuing. When requests from foreign investors for better transport infrastructure were made for setting up manufacturing facilities, then only our babus realised its importance.
Also there was a tremendous growth in air travel during the period even in tier two cities when IT industry went to these cities.
barrykul November 26th, 2008, 08:59 PM or did some day some PM realized that we are way far behind?
what is the reason or the man behind it.
Yes. PM is mostly involved in the change. He appointed Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel. Patel has done a diligent job, considering all the opposition by the CPI & M leftists bandicoots, leeches like AAI and others. Getting green fields airports like BIAL, HIAL and now Mumbai, Delhi off to a good start is visionary leadership. Kolkatta and Chennai are next. The Tier-II cities are also in the fray and there is a quiet revolution in these cities, almost under the radar. Good going, so far. We need to wait a few years to see how AAI shapes up, there is a tendency to get back to status quo and their leech like behavior. However today's young generation will not put up with bad service/attitudes. Anyways, the changes are welcome and a relief to the long suffering Indian public.
jammy97 November 27th, 2008, 05:01 AM Awesome updates guys. Thanks for all the pics and videos.
In the recent Hindustan Times summit, Mr Praful Patel was dead right in saying that the main bottleneck for air travel in the country was the lack of proper infrastructure. In a country which has only 400 civilian aircrafts (including AI/IA, Kingfisher, Jet/Lite, other smaller ones), proves the country is far behind.
In contrast, US has around 7000 aircrafts, and Eurpope has around 5000. Airports such as Mangalore, which has incredible potential, has done a wonderful job in starting a new terminal.
Hopefully, we will see more flights out of Mangalore (to places like Singapore, Malaysia) sometime in the future. We already see plenty of flights to Dubai, Kuwait etc.

jammy97 November 27th, 2008, 09:27 AM Is the new runway operational? Icannot see middle lines landing pad marks, threshold lines etc. It is a concrete runway right?
It is operational and its a concrete runway. According to the below source, it happens to be the first fully concrete runway in the country.
Times of India, (Pics Dayanand Kukkaje for Daijiworld) Mangalore: At 10.05 am on Wednesday, the newly laid concrete runway at Mangalore Airport in Bajpe was made operational when the Jet Airways flight from Bangalore touched down. Thus, the first complete concrete runway in the country was put to use as per the Visual Flight Rules.
After the flight took off, the King Fisher and Alliance Air flights from Mumbai also made use of the runway. Jet Airways pilot Dayakar told reporters that it was a tremendous achievement and lauded the work done by the Airports Authority of India in constructing a concrete runway. He said it was like landing at some international destination. While we have just begun using the runway today, the full commissioning will happen as per the Instrument Flight Rule in due course with the installation of Instrumental Landing System, an elated airport director M R Vasudeva told reporters. He added that the flights Airbus 319 and 320 can now operate with their full capacity load which was not possible on the existing runway.
The new runway will facilitate Mangalore Airport to operate flights to international destination. It has been built as per the specifications mentioned in the annexure of International Civil Aviation Organisation rule book with the runway having a friction co-efficient of 0.62, Vasudeva said, adding that night landing equipment have been installed along the 8,046 feet long and 150 ft wide runway.

krishnancv November 27th, 2008, 01:41 PM A wonderful airport for a tier-2 city. The older runway was called a table top runway because of its alignment. The new runway is really nice but i think it also sits atop a mountain( inferring from terrain given in Google Earth). Can somebody enlighten me on this issue?
bains1971 November 28th, 2008, 06:37 PM Bajpe airport ranks among the best in the country
Raviprasad Kamila The Hindu
It secured 86 per cent marks for customer satisfaction among the 25 airports surveyed in March this year
Established in 1951, it has grown tremendously in the last 10 years: official
Mangalore airport was credited with ISO 14,001 certification in 2006
MANGALORE: Once neglected as a “table-top airport”, the Mangalore airport is now counted among the most sought after airports in the country for the infrastructure it has developed. It has certainly given Mangalore a pride of place.
The airport at Bajpe securing 86 per cent “customer satisfaction” score in a recent national survey that covered 25 domestic airports is probably indicative of its growth. The survey undertaken by Spectrum Planning (India) Ltd for the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in February-March this year revealed that only Jammu airport could match Bajpe airport on customers’ satisfaction.
From handling 56 flights a week in 2005, the airport has come a long way. It now handles 280 flights a week – a five fold increase in a short span.Over 50-years old
Although the Mangalore airport was opened in December, 1951 it had remained dormant for several years. It came to limelight about three years ago, after the construction of a new concrete runway was taken up. Other infrastructure and commercial facilities were added subsequently. The airport witnessed a rapid growth after M.R. Vasudeva took over its reins as the director in 2004, according to Rajesh Sequeira, co-ordinator, Karnataka NRI Forum, U.A.E. “The NRIs in West Asia, particularly Dubai, will never forget October 3, 2006, when a passenger flight from Dubai landed at Mangalore airport for the first time,” he said. “The main beneficiaries of the airport are the NRIs of Mangalore and North Kerala origin residing in different countries of West Asia,” he said. According to him, the NRIs now need not fly to West Asian countries via Mumbai. “We can save money and time,” he said and added, “without sacrificing comfort and convenience”. On his part, Mr. Vasudeva attributes the growth of the airport to financial and administrative support given by K. Ramalingam, Chairman, AAI. Evolution
The director said that the AAI deposited Rs. 50 lakh with the State Government in March, 1989 for handing over 186 acre for the construction of new concrete runway and terminal building. The State handed over the land for the runway in September, 2003 after a gap of 14 years. The construction of 2.4-km-long new concrete runway began in April, 2004 and completed in March, 2006. This is in addition to the old 1.6-km-long tar runway. Mr. Vasudeva said that although the State Government handed over the land records, not all the 208 project-affected families had vacated their lands. The airport authorities had to convince people to vacate their land. In addition, the AAI had to face opposition from the Vimana Nildana Vistarana Virodhi Samiti, a forum of people, who opposed the expansion of the airport. “The real challenge was in shifting a church, a mosque and a “daivasthana”, a place of spirit-worship, from Adyapady village for constructing the new runway,” he recalled.
Construction of the new air-conditioned arrival hall to accommodate 250 passengers at a time, expansion of departure hall to accommodate even number of passengers, setting up of visitors’ gallery and anti-hijacking room, strengthening the apron, the parking stand for aircraft, to enable parking of four aircraft at a time, constructing a parallel taxi-way connecting two runways, opening a restaurant, providing two security hold areas to make passengers rest after checking in, are some of the other projects completed after 2005. In addition, the area control centre of the airport extended its air traffic services to over flying aircrafts from 13 hours to 24 hours. This helped pilots flying approximately 200 nautical miles of airspace from the centre of Mangalore Area Control Centre to get clear instructions for safe navigation to avoid collision. The airspace comprised parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Goa and Maharashtra.
The AAI changed its Instrument Landing System (ILS) from offset ILS to category I-ILS for safe landing of aircraft during rainy season, cloudy weather and night time. A high-frequency radar was commissioned at the airport. Opening of two currency exchange counters, duty-free shops, ATM and a bank branch, a mini area traffic control tower, barracks for CISF personnel, quarters for employees are some of the other developments that have taken place at the airport.
The airport built a 8.5-km perimeter road around it to enable vehicles to reach any part of the airport premises at any time of emergency. A compound wall was also built.
The airport obtained ISO 9001 certification in 2004 for quality management system and ISO 14,001 certification in 2006 for environment management system. Passenger traffic
The Union Government declared the airport as a Customs airport in 2006.http://mangaloreairport.blogspot.com/2008/09/bajpe-airport-ranks-among-best-in.html

jammy97 December 3rd, 2008, 05:30 AM MANGALORE Dec 3: Chief Secretary Sudhakar Rao said here on Monday that the State Government will take steps to send a proposal to the Union Government recommending international airport status to Mangalore airport. Mangalore airport is a domestic customs airport.
He was replying to queries from presspersons at Kenjar where the Airports Authority of India is building an integrated terminal building for Mangalore airport. Earlier, Mr. Rao inspected ongoing work at the terminal building.
Mr. Rao said that he was not aware of the fact that the State Government was yet to send the proposal to the Union Government. “I will take it up with the Civil Aviation Secretary after completing the formalities,” he said.
About the slow pace of work to lay a road to the new terminal building by the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation, he said: “We will take care of it.”
Mr. Rao said that the airport officials too had brought this to his notice. They told him that the new terminal building was expected to be ready by February next. If the connecting road was not ready by then, it will create problem.
The Chief Secretary said that he was aware of the importance of road connectivity to the new terminal building as a similar situation existed in Bangalore before the international airport at Devanahalli was inaugurated.
M.R. Vasudeva, director of the airport, briefed him about the ongoing work. The director said that about 70 per cent of the work had been completed.

jammy97 December 8th, 2008, 12:30 PM Mahesh Kulkarni / Chennai/ Mangalore December 08, 2008, 0:35 IST
The much-awaited international status for Mangalore airport is likely to be accorded over the next couple of months as a major part of the work on the second runway and a terminal building is nearing completion at Kenjar, about 20 km from Mangalore. The expansion of the airport for Rs 214 crore is expected to be completed shortly.
International operations began at the airport on October 3, 2006, with Air India Express, the low cost carrier of the Air India, introducing a flight to Dubai. Now the airline is operating 25 flights from Mangalore to major destinations in West Asia like Sharjah, Dubai, Muscat, Kuwait, Bahrain and Doha. In addition to the national carrier, international airlines like Saudi Airlines and Kuwait Air are waiting for Indian approval to start operations to Mangalore, M R Vasudeva, director, Mangalore airport told Business Standard.
“Mangalore airport is now equipped with necessary infrastructure to operate international flights and we expect the ministry of civil aviation to give the green signal so that the airport can be declared an international airport,” he said.
He said Mangalore airport is the second airport in south India to have two runways. The second runway, built for Rs 55 crore, is 8,000 ft. The terminal building being built for Rs 147 crore is expected to be completed by February. The AAI has acquired 364 acres of additional land to expand the airport.
The expanded airport will have two aerobridges, eight remote parking bays with provision for three more bays. With the commencement of full-fledged international operations, Mangalore airport will be capable of handling nearly 1 mn passengers. Presently, it is handling over 725,000 passengers per annum, a growth of two and a half times in just two years. Between 2003 and 2005, the airport handled over 277,000 passengers. The growth has come mainly from international flights that started in 2006, he said.
“After opening of new terminal building we will convert the existing terminal building into a cargo terminal,” he said.
Vasudeva said, presently, the Airports Authority of India is building air traffic control tower with a height of 25 metres for Rs 10 crore, which will be ready in two years. The work on building a category-8 fire station for Rs 4 crore has also commence and will be operational in six months.
The airport will also have a 300-car parking area, restaurant, canopy and pre-paid taxi counters. Barracks for CISF personnel and other airport staff are being constructed. The state government is in the process of building a new approach road to the airport from Mangalore city at a cost of Rs 8 crore.
With the commencement of the new terminal building, the distance to Mangalore city will come down by 8 kms, he said.

Krishnamoorthy K December 11th, 2008, 05:29 AM Manipal about 65 km from Mangalore may get a new airport. The proposal still in the conception stage. Dr. Ramdas Pai, Chancelor of Manipal University, estimates the cost of setting up the airport to be 25 crores, barring the cost of the land. The land requirement for an airport with 6000 feet runway is 75 acres. Dr. Pai said Jet Airways and Kingfisher have shown interest in the proposal to fly from Bangalore and Mumbai.
Out of seven lakhs annual traffic of Mangalore Airport more than 40% is from Udupi and Uttara Kannada, which makes the sense to have an airport in Manipal.
15,000 students from 52 english-speaking-countries study in Manipal and the airport may also unclock tourism especialy religious pilgrimmages of Udupi & UK. Dr. Pai proposes to raise funds from financial instituions to develop the airport.

There is good news for the air travelers between Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), The Air India Express has started the air passenger survey between Riyadh and Mangalore. This has been a long standing demand of the flyers from that country as well as in Mangalore.
According to sources in the Airlines there was scope for at least two flights per week. The Airlines did not specify the quantum of traffic but only said there was tremendous scope for the flight. Initially the Airlines expects 70 per cent occupancy. Speaking to this website, officials of the ticketing agencies said presently those who wanted to fly from Mangalore to Riyadh direct had to catch a plane at Kochi, Bangalore or Mumbai which is not only cost intensive but also time consuming.
Air India Express could find a competitor in the Jet Airways on this route as the Jet had been contemplating such a move after it launched its schedules to United States from Bangalore some time back.

Some of the fundamental facilities will have to be adopted for the functioning of cargo in the customs airport. The department needs to invest money in this project and in return it expects guaranteed usage and income, he said.
The user’s name, quantity of export and import, and other details must be clearly mentioned in the recommendation, said Siddhu.

As we are in first week of new year, a kind of euphoria and despair among all those who have been anxiously looking forward to the commissioning new Integrated Terminal Building of Mangalore Airport. 70% of the civil work at the terminal is complete and the authorities are waiting for the systems and vital components to arrive from different continents and countries so that they can be fitted into their respective places to commission the project by the stipulated date March 15, 2009.
The work on the 600metre long parallel taxiway is also going on briskly. Mr Vasudeva has taken the people into confidence and successfully convinced the villagers to handover 56.46 acres of land required for the parallel taxiway. “People have willingly come forward and given the land. Though officially the land is not handed over to the government the process will be completed in due course”, Vasudeva added.
The work on the approach roads both entry and exit to the new terminal is going on in a war footing. Work on the 900 meter entry road from Deccan Park area has just begun while the work on the 1100 meter exit road adjacent to Sri Devi College is moving on at rapid strides. The road is elevated to about 6 meters and Karnataka Government has agreed to provide the road in a fit and functional condition. “The gradient level of the entry road is about 8 to 10 percent and we have requested the government to try to make it 10 to 12 percent”, says Vasudeva. When asked whether the road will be ready by the time the terminal is ready for commissioning Mr Vasudeva said “both of us are racing against time”.

Rajesh Sequeira , Co-ordinator of the NRI Forum who has closely monitored the goings on at the Mangalore Airport says “The new integrated terminal building is a baby of Mr Vasudeva who was intently involved in the project from the beginning. His departure at this crucial stage would hamper the progress of the new terminal. But we do not want him to forego the financial benefits for our sake. The problem can be settled by allowing him to accept his promotion at Coimbotore and send him on deputation to Mangalore to oversee the completion of the project”.

Krishnamoorthy K February 28th, 2009, 08:39 AM We will complete the construction of the building on schedule: official
MANGALORE: The new integrated terminal building of the Airports Authority of India at Kenjar is expected to be ready by March-end. “As per a memorandum of understanding signed by the Airports Authority of India with the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation, the construction should be completed by March-end, and we will meet that deadline,” director of the airport M.R. Vasudeva told The Hindu.
“The 47,000-sq.m apron (parking stands for aircraft) is ready. It can accommodate five aircraft at a time. The apron has been connected to the runway through a taxi way,” he said.
About 80 per cent work on the construction of air-conditioned car parking facility had been completed. It had seven escalators. The security hold areas, where passengers could wait for their aircraft to arrive, after completing the checking formalities, would be in the first floor. The arrival and departure halls would be on the ground floor. There would be separate counters for different airlines in the ground floor. In addition, there would be commercial facilities, customs and immigration facilities in the ground floor. The offices of the AAI would be in the basement. Mr. Vasudeva said that the State Government was laying a 875-m long concrete road to connect the terminal building with the Mangalore-Bajpe Road. More than 50 per cent of this nine-metre wide road had been concreted.

jammy97 March 9th, 2009, 06:26 AM Mangalore Airport Revenues On the Upswing
Mangalore, Mar 8: Revenues and passenger numbers at the Mangalore airport have not only been steady, but also set for an upswing.
The airport is expected to garner a profit of Rs 8 crore in 2008-’09, only marginally less than the Rs 9-crore profit it had made in 2007-08.
“We are extremely satisfied with the profits, given the sluggish traffic and slowdown of the economy. The new integrated terminal building will be ready by May, and help improve the traffic even more,” M R Vasudeva, Airport Director, Mangalore Airport.
One more international plane - the Dammam, to Saudi Arabia - will fly out from Mangalore from March 25.
The flight, which was introduced following public demand, will operate twice a week. “This will also bring in more passengers,” said Vasudeva.
Things have changed
Till 2005, Mangalore airport had made operating losses of up to Rs 2.5 crore per annum. But in 2006, after the introduction of international flights to Dubai, things have changed for the better.
Operating profits touched Rs 9 crore in 2008.
“Prior to 2005, we had handled only 3,500 aircraft movements per annum. But in 2008, we handled 12,000. Air passenger numbers have also gone up from 2.77 lakh to 7.05 lakh in the period,” Vasudeva stated.
Now, the officials want to step on the accelerator - A sum of Rs 147 crore is being spent for airport upgradation.
Two aero-bridges and seven escalators will also be in place from May.
“Once the access road from the city to the airport is built by the government, there will be no looking back,” said Vasudeva

jammy97 March 25th, 2009, 06:49 AM Dammam-Mangalore A-I Express from April
DAMMAM - Air-India Express is starting its first ever service from the Kingdom in mid-April. According to officials, the new service will be from Dammam to Mangalore with Trivandrum in Kerala as the final destination. Air-India Express initially will have three services a week, i.e. on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Boeing 737 - 800 flights will be flying in this sector.
So far there has been no direct service from Eastern Province to Mangalore. Most of the Mangaloreans travel from Bahrain or take a connecting flight from Mumbai.
Mangaloreans in EP are quite happy about the new announcement of Air-India Express. "This was a service that I've been looking forward to since a long time. Since I live in Bajpe, the city where the airport is located, traveling back home will be hurdle free," said Moosa, a Mangalorean residing in Dammam.
"We Mangaloreans have been waiting quite a while now for such a service. Every time we travel from Bahrain or we get a connection flight from Mumbai and it is quite difficult like that. Now hopefully traveling back home will be easier, at least I hope so," said yet another Mangalorean woman who lives in Dammam.
Air-India Express is a low cost airline subsidiary of Air-India, based in Mumbai and operates mainly to Middle East with main base at Cochin International Airport and a hub at Trivandrum International Airport in Kerala.

ajay ramchandran June 22nd, 2009, 08:16 AM It might take some time till we get the next update. Work is going on smoothly at present. The construction site is a no go area at presnt. Unless you take special permission you cannot go there.

I also like the way the approach road is being built. They are going to segregate the incoming and outgoing traffic arent they? Cant believe this is the same Mangalore Airport that looked like a factory shed in 2005 when I saw it last with a modest country road as approach road. Exhibits the pace at which this harbour city is rising!

Akash ,Thanks for uploading the photos. For those unfamiliar with Mangalore just to let them know ,Mangalore is City on the West coast . So it's growth is limited on the West by the sea . As you travel east the topography changes due to the Western Ghats. Infact the original Mangalore Airport is infact a table top airport with huge valleys on either side. The second runway which was built to accomodate larger aircraft was built after filling up an entire valley with mud.I think two valleys were filled up . The entire terrian from Kavoor(Suburb of Mangalore) to the Aiport is hilly. The new terminal brings down the travelling distance by 8 KM.About 5 years ago I sent off letters to the KCCI,AAI requesting for a railway station to be built next to the Airport and name it MANGALORE INTERNATIONAL STATION but sadly they are still dilly dallying . This always happens in INdia . If it was any western country they would have built a railway station either underground or next to the Airport. Currently Mangalore Junction and Surathkal are the nearest railway stations.
Mangalore City itself has a hilly terrain with many small hills. That is why construction in Mangalore is much more expensive than in other cities and many high rises in Mangalore have different levels depending on which part of the road you are looking from.
Many of the green spaces that you see have been acquired for MSEZ but not necessarily the ones shown in the photo.
Fusionist June 24th, 2009, 03:45 PM looks like big and spacious design, unlike the tiny hut Trichy got. But it still looks a bit boxy to me, the design isnt very imaginative nor does take into consideration the environment. So I still would class this structure as 'harsh'. 6/10

This is most probably view of Bajpe road on Mangalore side. Across Gurupur river it is Maravoor bridge and then Marakada/Kavoor hills in background? (not sure as this photograph may be taken from new airport terminal at the top of Kenjar/Bajpe hill). There is a proposal for constructing 100 feet road from Mangalore city side. For more on this check posts #1244 (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=38686892&postcount=1244) & #1234 (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=38579294&postcount=1234) in Mangalore thread.
^^^^ sorry its from daijiworld....its water mark can be seen on the images.....anyways thanx.....:)
The photographer is Dayanand Kukkaje.
I am including here some quotes from Daijiworld news report.
Speaking to Daijiworld Sena said that Chairman of Airport Authority of India had visited and surveyed the work at the new terminal on May 7, 2009. “Based on this assessment the target date for the completion of the building is set as 31st July, 2009. Technical people in charge of the work have been positive about completing the work by this stipulated time. If everything goes as expected the inauguration of the new terminal will be held in the first week of September and at the same time the operations will also be shifted to the new terminal”, he explained.
Adhering to the deadline it has set is feasible in an ideal situating assuming that everything goes right and there are no bottlenecks in the way of completing the project. According to Sena the only bottleneck visible at the moment is whether the oil browsers (oil tankers) will be able to move in the approach road or not due to its steepness. If these browsers are not able to move in this steep road then we have to find an alternate road for the purpose of transporting refuel facility for aircrafts. Once the operations are shifted to the new terminal the old building will be used for cargo handling and the continuance of the same will depend on the volume of cargo.
Having realized that parking contractors were not doing justice by charging car parking fee to every vehicle that came to the airport Sena has come to the rescue of those vehicles that entered the airport just for picking or dropping their relatives or friends. Now a time limit of 10 minutes is given for four wheelers without charging any parking fee once they enter the airport. In the new terminal building the system will be computerized where no vehicles can escape from paying parking fee beyond the 10 minute time frame allowed for vehicles.

Although this is a great looking terminal, I had the same suspicion about the protrusion. For me at least, it really destroys what would otherwise be a lovely exterior. In a month we'll have the good old cheap-plastic name boards the PWD loves.

Krishnamoorthy K June 28th, 2009, 06:07 AM MANGALORE: The road, which reduces the distance to the Bajpe airport by eight kilometers and gives connection to the new terminal, is ready.
It will handed be over to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) after energizing it. The road will be open for traffic when the new terminal of the Bajpe airport is ready. The terminal is expected to facilitate passenger traffic in September, according to acting airport director B R Sena.
Syed Elyas Pasha, executive engineer, Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC), said the work as far as the two-lane road is concerned, is complete. "Power supply has to be given to the lights on the road and once Mescom provides it, the road will be handed over to AAI, said Pasha. He said some pending work, like placing markings on the road to be used for two-way traffic, would be over within a couple of days. Pasha said that the final cost of the project was Rs 7.9 crore, almost a crore less than the estimated cost.
Sources in the AAI said the road will be used as a one-way and for vehicles exiting the airport. The Dakkan Park Road, which has been made ready with the help of the local panchayat, would be used as entry into the airport.
The link road is state government's infrastructure gift to the airport expansion project. The plan involved construction of two km of four-lane road, from state highway 66A on the Mangalore-Bajpe Road from Malavoor Railway Bridge, using the Asian Development Bank loan through KUIDFC.
The road project, estimated at Rs 8.89 crore, included strengthening of the existing PWD road of 1.125 kilometers and constructing new road of 875 metre length from Kenjar Village junction to new Bajpe airport terminus.
Deferred due to controversies
This road to the new terminus had been mired in controversy ever since it was conceptualized two years back. This was due to gradient problems in both the alternate roads from state highway 66A, via Kenjaru village and another via Dakkan Park. The KUIDFC said it was unable to meet the Indian Road Congress (IRC) specifications on the Dakkan Park approach, and it could not meet the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requirements by AAI on the Kenjaru Village approach road.
Finally, work was taken up by KUIDFC after AAI gave KUIDFC alternative horizontal alignment and vertical profile with the steep gradient. Due to this the new alternate road via Kenjaru was converted to two-lane section, from four lane, mainly due to unscientific excavation of a hillock by private parties.

About the project
The cost of the new integrated terminal building is approximately Rs 150 crore. The terminal building will have 18,000 sqm floor area and has been designed to handle 500 passengers at a time.
It will also ensure hassle-free embarking and disembarking of passengers. Among the various facilities at the new airport, a parking space for eight aircraft, a 300-car parking facility, information centre, closed-circuit TVs, 28 check-in counters, three arrival and two departure halls, seven lifts and five escalators are the significant features of the airport.

Therre are some fantastic photograps of the new road that is being built. It is a pity that this was not made a four lane road due to technical reasons . Some private parties had excavated a hillock and that made it impossible to widen the road further.

Mangalore, Jul 7: The new integrated terminal building of the Mangalore Airport at Bajpe here is all set to be inaugurated in the first week of September. And now the two-way road via Kenjar connecting airport that reduces the distance to the airport by eight kilometres is almost ready and will be opened for traffic at the time of terminal’s inaugural.

The major works of the newly constructed road are almost finished with electrification works pending, which will render the roads more convenient. It is the state government’s project which has been implemented using the Asian Development Bank loan and the work contract was given to Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC). The new road, which was planned as a four-way, is now a two-way lane after innumerable controversies and alleged private excavations in hillock, where the road project was framed.
According to Syed Elyas Pasha, KUIDFC executive engineer the road will open for traffic from September after it is handed over to Airport Authority of India (AAI). The minor works related to the new road, which includes place markings on the road and power supply to the lights, are pending, added Pasha. The existing road via Dakkan Park will be used as an entry to airport, whereas the new road will be to exit from the airport, as per the sources in AAI. But nothing in this regard has been finalized as yet.
The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 8.89 crore that includes strengthening of the existing road of 1.25 kilometres which was under the supervision of public works department. These works apart, a new 875-metre long road from Kenjar village junction to new airport terminus too has been laid.
The project that was conceptualized two years ago is now finally ready. Initially, the project faced hurdles as far as acquisition of land was concerned with few landowners refusing to part with their land. After the issue was resolved, the KUIDFC took up the works of construction of the road.
Meanwhile, another interesting fact is that Mangalore City Corporation had begun road works from KPT circle to Maravoor bridge in the name of airport connectivity road. After finishing works on one-kilometre stretch, the work gained a sluggish pace and is yet to be completed though MCC has received both central and state government grants. The contractors have been blamed for the slow progress of work. Once the project is completed then the way to the airport is all smooth.

the runway has been extended and the state govt also constructed a civilian airport terminal at the cost of 10 crore.....but all in vain when civil aviation ministry denied permission to bidar airport on the grounds that bidar is too close to hyderabad international airport....
however our CM yeddi is very furious and wants the airport functional at any cost...only time will decide......:)

Second runway
A new international length (2.9 km) runway was constructed and commissioned on 10 May 2006. With this, Mangalore Airport has become the first airport in Karnataka to have two runways. [11] and a runway which is made of concrete.[12] The airport has acquired land to build a taxiway parallel to the new runway to reduce aircraft on ground time[2], it will be connecting the runway to the new terminal building under construction
Now I understand...time has flown

The two lane road is only the approach road(2 kms or less) to the airport. Major stretch of road from Mangalore city to the airport will be four lane. They have involved the best of consultants and Engineers. They could not convert the last stretch (hillock) as some private parties had excavated part of the hill. Now I understand why even in the UK major hill roads are two lane.Oil slick is to be looked foras Petrol tankers are using this road. However I heard that due to the steep gradient they might build another road for them.

BANGALORE: Aviation and Karnataka are synonymous.
Apart from housing the country’s major aviation industries, the state also boasts of some of the India’s most important airports.
It was Bangalore, the state’s capital, where the country’s first green field airport, the Bengaluru International Airport was built on Public- Private Partnership (PPP) basis.
Now, in a bid to improve intercity air connectivity between the Tier-II cities in the state and to give a boost to tourism in the state, the government has decided to develop new airports and upgrade existing ones in different parts of the state.
Besides, the government has also proposed the construction of airstrips in 24 districts, which includes five around Bangalore City.
Though few of these projects have taken shape or are reaching completion, a few others have been facing various hurdles.
Express takes a look at the status of the various airports across the state, what ails their progress and how these airport projects can attract investment and improve tourism in the state.
Bengaluru International Airport (BIA)
BIA started commercial operations in May 2008. In total, 31 airlines operate from the airport of which 20 are international airlines (including three freighters)and, 11 are domestic airlines (including two freighters).
Currently, the terminal building can handle around 3000 passengers during peak hours and promoters of the airport are planning a second terminal and runway which is to be completed in the next three or four years.
Other plans include the development of an airport city. This area will be a well balanced mix of office parks, retail, entertainment and hospitality.
Mangalore International Airport
The Mangalore airport located in the outskirts of the coastal city is the only other airport in the state (other than BIA) to operate international flights.
Several airlines operate international flights from the airport on the Middle-East route facilitating an easy transit for the large number of people in the state’s costal districts and the border districts of neighbouring Kerala who are working abroad like in Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Doha, Dubai, Kuwait, Muscat.
There is also a potential to start flights from Mangalore to Singapore and Malaysia with a few airlines evincing their interest. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) commenced the construction of an Integrated Terminal Building at a cost of Rs 165 crore, which will be operational by September raising the airport to international standards.
Mysore Airport
If the state government’s plans of upgrading existing airports in the state is aimed at giving a fillip to tourism, then the Mysore Airport should be given the top-most priority.
The City of Palaces, which attracts around 30 lakh tourist annually, does seem to be badly in need of an airport.
Apart from being the most potent tourist destination in the state, Mysore also houses leading IT companies like Infosys, Wipro and a large number of educational institutions.
A total of 174 acres of land close to the Mysore- Ooty Road has been allotted for the development of the airport and the AAI is planning to open it before ‘Dasara’. Once operational, the airport can accommodate ATR 72 aircraft with a capacity of 65-70 passengers.
However, expansion work could be delayed as farmers are unwilling to part with their land for the compensation offered by the district administration for the second phase of expansion.
The administration is willing to give Rs 50 lakh per acre as compensation, but farmers are seeking for Rs 1.5 crore for the same.
Shimoga and Gulbarga Airports
There seems to be no respite for the fraud-hit Satyam Computers, as whichever project it has set its hand on looks jinxed.
The Shimoga and Gulbarga airports are latest to be hit by the Satyam bug.
The Karnataka government had severed its agreements with Maytas Infra Consortium, a subsidiary firm of Satyam Computers, for dilly-dallying on finishing the two airport projects.
However, they again reverted its earlier decision and handed over the project back to Maytas after the Ministry of Corporate Affairs assured that it was in control of the newly-constituted Satyam board.
The Shimoga and Gulbarga airport projects were to be developed on PPP basis at a cost of Rs 220 crore. Though, there seems to be an imminent delay in the project, the government is confident that the projects will see the completion soon. The Shimoga airport is Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa’s pet project as it falls in his home district.
Bellary Airport
Though the cash-rich mining district already has two airports and despite the mining czars having their own helipads for their choppers to land, the government is keen to develop a new airport near Chaganur and Siriwar villages and have hit upon the stumble block as the controversy over land acquisition worsens.
The farmers have cited that lands, where the airport is proposed, are fertile and would affect their livelihood. Besides, opposition parties have also raised serious concern over the project alleging that the motive behind having the airport at the proposed location is to only benefit the Reddy brothers in their mining business.
The Infrastructure development department has said that the ‘Request For Proposal’ for the construction of the airport will be issued shortly. Among the existing airports, the one in Bellary city has no scope for expansion, and the other is owned by the Jindals.
Bijapur Airport
The government has allocated 727- acre of land at Burnapur village near Bijapur for the airport. MARG Limited has bagged the contract for the development of airport. The latest from the government is that it is in the process of issuing PDA to MARG.
Belgaum and Hubli Airports
The Sambra airport in Belgaum, a couple of weeks ago, had stopped flight operations. Kingfisher Airlines had stopped services as it was incurring losses. The AAI had undertaken expansion work on the Runway, Terminal Building and Apron Taxiway. Hubli airport is also being expanded, but the future looks bleak as Kingfisher is the only airline operating from this airport.
Bidar and Karwar airports, proposed for development, are under the control of Defence ministry.

if that is true, it is really short sighted. the existing road is too long-winded.
i think they should build dividers on that road. keep the traffic separate. if there is slow traffic for 2-3 km it does not matter.

MP of Mangalore Mr.Nalin Kumar Kateel today visited the Airport at Bajpe and inspected the airport terminal building that is coming up at Kenjar village near Bajpe.
Mr.Kateel met the new director of the airport N.P. Chandran who has taken charge recently and directed him to speed up the work of the new terminal building. He told the press that he intends to get the date of the Union Minister for Civil Aviation Mr. Praful Patel for inaugurating the terminal building on 30th October which is just 75 days away.
Mr. Kateel expressed satisfaction over the quality of the work done at the project site. But said he was not happy at the pace the work was going on and requested the airport director to put some more people on the work.
Mr. Kateel said when the airport terminal was completed, Mangalore will join the an elite club of 35 tier II cities in the country that have elegant looking and technologically on par with any modern airports in the country. He said he would like to see the passengers arriving into Mangalore during the festive season in the new terminal.
The new terminal building is equipped with 22 check in counters, three conveyor belts and a car parking area which can accommodate over 300 cars at any point of time. The new terminal once in operation, will reduce the distance to Mangalore city by about 8 kms. The apron spread over the area of 48,000 sq.meters can accomodate five aircrafts at a time, said Mr. Chandran.
He appreciated the far sightedness of the planners of the AAI particularly that part where the parking bays have been enhanced in numbers from 5 to ten flights at a time. The baggage clearance area, the modern outlook of the building and many other features including the parking place has been appreciated by the MP.
Mr. Chandran who accompanied Mr. Kateel said the work of the terminal was going as per schedule.

MANGALORE: The new integrated terminal building of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) at Kenjar here is expected to be ready by September-end. At present, the terminal building is at Bajpe.
The AAI has adopted a roof-water harvesting system in the new building to collect 60 lakh litres of rain water. In addition, a facility has been created for sewage treatment. The treated water will be used for gardening.
Mr. Radhakrishna told Mr. Kateel that the roof of the building had been completed and the basement was ready. Only interior ceiling work on the ground and first floor (mezzanine floor) and some work related to air-conditioning were pending. Seven escalators had been installed in the building.
In addition, the apron (parking facility for aircraft) was also ready. The apron, covering about 48,000 sq. m, was sufficient to park five aircraft at a time. Four Airbus 310, and one Airbus 321, could be parked at a time. The link taxiway to the main runway was also ready, Mr. Radhakrishna told the MP.

engineer.akash August 28th, 2009, 10:07 PM New terminal ready, but fully operational only by October
Stanley G Pinto , TNN 28 August 2009, 11:10pm IST
MANGALORE: The new terminal at the Bajpe airport here, housing both international as well as domestic terminals, is likely to be inaugurated by
Civil Aviation minister Prafful Patel on September 15.
But, the new facility, built at a cost of Rs 147 crore, will be opened for both domestic and international traffic only in October as various systems like customs, immigration, terminal management, will not be operational at the time of the inauguration.
Airport director Chandran told TOI, "The September 15 deadline was tentative, but they were working towards that date. Sources said the date has not been officially confirmed by the Airport Authority of India, New Delhi or the Union Civil Aviation Ministry, but the date doing rounds as the Mysore Airport was also scheduled to be inaugurated on that day itself. The date was mentioned by Patel when chief minister B S Yeddyurappa met him at New Delhi recently.
The Mysore airport is awaiting clearance from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). "Once that comes through, it is certain that both the functions would be held on the same day for convenience sake, the source added.
On the same day of the inauguration, laying of the foundation stone for the Air Traffic Services (ATS) Complex will also be laid at the Bajpe Customs airport. This complex, for which in principle approval has been given, is still on the drawing board stage.
As far as the new terminal is concerned, the new terminal, which will have two aerobridges, is four times larger than the existing terminal at Bajpe. While the old terminal is 4,000 sq mt, the new terminal is 18,200 sq mt. There is space to park 300 cars at the new terminal.
The new terminal can handle more than a thousand international and domestic arrivals / departures at any given point of time, as opposed to the old terminal which is constrained to handle the existing load of about 600 passengers.
Also, the new road to Kenjaru terminal, which will reduce the distance by over eight km is also complete. The link road is state government's infrastructure dole to the airport expansion project. The road project, estimated at Rs 8.89 crore, included strengthening of the existing PWD road of 1.125 km and constructing new road of 900 metre length from Kenjar village junction to new Bajpe airport terminus.

Mangalore, Sep 10: After much dithering the new tentative date for the inauguration of the new Integrated Terminal Building at Bajpe Airport is fixed as September 23 or 24th 2009 according to the Airport Director V N Chandran. Earlier September 15 was set as the tentative date for the inauguration by the Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel.
Talking to Daijiworld V N Chandran, who assumed charge as the new Airport Director on August 10, 2009 said “September 23 or 24th is again a tentative date. I cannot be sure about the date as it is finalized at the headquarters in New Delhi. The final date will depend on the availability of the VVIP who will inaugurate the terminal”. It is believed that the Civil Aviation Ministry is contemplating the inauguration of the Mysore Airport to co-inside with that of the inauguration of the new terminal in Mangalore on the same day.

It is no doubt good news for all Mangaloreans who have been waiting for the new international airport terminal to become operational ever since the beginning of this year. The only hitch however is that the new terminal will be operational for domestic and international flights only in October end or 1st week of November this year. So for all those who have been waiting in the wings to take off and to land in the new terminal building will have to wait patiently for at least 2 months.
“After inauguration of the terminal about 40 to 45 days are required for us to complete the infrastructural related work and make the terminal suitable for handling domestic and international flights with proper checking points before we open it for traffic”, Chandran asserted. With the commissioning of the new terminal the entire premises of airport will be shifted to the new terminal and the old terminal will be used for cargo handling.
As of now Chandran does not foresee any further delay in the inauguration of the new terminal. “Our work is going on in full swing and I don’t anticipate any delay. Everything will be done as per the time schedule and as per our plan”, he told daijiworld.
Chandran also said that the foundation stone for the Air Traffic Service Complex would also be laid on the same day.
The new airport terminal has the capacity to handle more than 1000 international and domestic flights, a marginal increase from the earlier limited number of flights. With the commissioning of this terminal the 22 km distance from the city to the Bajpe airport will also be reduced by 6 kms much to the satisfaction of Mangaloreans who may find it easy and less troublesome traveling to the airport to receive or drop their near and dear ones.
Built at a cost of Rs. 147 crores in a 40 acre area of land the 18,200 sq metres Integrated Terminal will have 2 aero bridges, 5 parking stands, 300 cars parking facility, 28 check-in counters, several conveyor belts, 250-passenger capacity arrival hall and an hodgepodge of facilities in conforming with the status of an airport handling international flights. The work of the approach road to the new terminal is also completed by the state government at a cost of about Rs. 9 crores.
It may be recalled that it was the commissioning of the new international length (2.9 km) concrete runway in 2006, built at a cost of Rs. 50 crores that paved the way for the new Terminal. As a result Mangalore became the second airport in Karnataka to have two runways making way for handling the arrival and departure of international flights at Mangalore airport, thus fulfilling a long cherished dream of NRI’s of the coastal region and that of North Kerala.
Finally it looks as though the long cherished dream of having an international status airport is seeing the light of the day.

the terminal looks huge..
Krishnamoorthy K September 13th, 2009, 08:03 AM Madhu, referring to the Mangalore airport, said the international terminal of the airport is ready for inauguration. “The terminal is well constructed by the AAI. We are negotiating with Konkan railways to extend its service to the airport. The railway track is just one-and-a-half kms from the airport. We want to develop a traffic hub near the airport so that people from the airport can either take train or railway route to reach their destinations. In the next 15 days, the model will be ready. We may go in for a private-public participation mode for building the hub”.

Curious to know how they plan for transportation from Railway Station to the Airport Terminal which is 1.5 km away on the top of the hill. Also transportation for visitors, passangers using city buses. Is there a city bustop on top of the hill?

Krishnamoorthy K September 19th, 2009, 01:56 PM ^^ The airport road from KPT junction of NH-17 upto Padavinangadi (Blue Berry Hills) is about five years old. Now they have extended the road. Upto Kavoor junction the road is almost complete. Work upto Gurupura river bridge is going on. The road will be initially fourlane later will be expanded to 100 feet.
There is a need for extra bridge across Gurupura river bridge and converting Bajpe-Kateel-Kinnigoli upto Mulky connecting NH-17 to fourlane for the convenience of Udupi & UK people.

I travelled on this stretch in 2007. The median and the lights were not constructed then. Again the road was particularly part near the Trishna Hotel and nearer to Kavoor.Glad to see the transformation. looks great.I do not think any Tier 2 CITY could beat Mangalore today in pace of infrastructure work!

Can't believe this is the old Yeyyadi Road where I lived 4 years back! When I first lived there in 2004 the place was almost akin to a village. Now with this Airport Road brand and the upcoming mega highrises I would be lost if I visit the place anytime soon.
I second the comment on Mangalore and its status among the Tier II cities of India. Doc Ajay will be a very happy man :)

Pet peeve of mine : sand dunes at the median edge of the road. A little effort to clean up this area would make roads in India look neat and tidy.
Great to see the Mangalore airport come up this quickly especially when it is being built by AAI. The old ramshackle building did not do justice to such an important city on the west coast.
I know this is the Airports thread, but any change to the Mangalore Railway Station. The last time I saw railway station it was a disaster, looked like some bygone relic, poorly maintained.

Mangalore Central is still the same . In 2007 there were slight improvements like digital displays /vending machines etc. The Mangalore junction got a slight makeover after the name change. I am optimistic of companies like MRPL trying to sponsor its beautification . I amy be asking a bit too much as MRPL are already sponsoring 30 crores for six laning Suratkal --till MRPL gate. Hope the corporation will extend this road to connect Airport Road. But Mangalore ?Central or Mangalore junction has been included in the list of World class stations proposed by Railway ministry.

Krishnamoorthy K September 25th, 2009, 04:35 AM MANGALORE: Three major projects in the city, two public and one private, could formally see the light of the day with the Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh inaugurating them anytime after November 15. These include the dedication of the new integrated terminal building of the Bajpe Airport, the formal dedication of Mangalore Special Economic Zone and the dedication of the new campus of St Aloysius College at Beeri near here.
In an informal chat with a select group of journalists after inspecting the ongoing work at the new integrated terminal building of the airport, Union Minister for law and justice M Veerappa Moily said, "I am trying to tie up few more projects for their formal dedication by the PM and this will happen anytime after November 15." Moily expressed satisfaction at the ongoing pace of works at the new integrated terminal building.
Necessary steps will be taken to declare the Mangalore Airport an international airport before the PM formally dedicates it to the nation, Moily said. The Bajpe airport at present is a customs airport and handles international flights, primarily to destinations in the Middle East. Incidentally, a team from Central Electricity Authority headed by its chief engineer Thakral too inspected the airport as part of statutory requirement on Thursday.
90% of works on new terminal complete
V N Chandran, the airport director said 90 per cent of works pertaining to the new integrated terminal building are complete or under the control of AAI. "The remaining 10 per cent of work pertains to immigration clearances, which the authorities concerned have taken up with their headquarters," Chandran said, adding that, "We are in constant touch with those concerned to expedite all necessary clearances in this regard."
Chandran, also utilized the visit of Moily to the city to update him on various issues pertaining to the airport in general, and the new integrated terminal building in particular. These include construction of a new approach road towards Dakkan Park side to be taken up by the state government as it did on the east side where KUIDFC constructed the road as a precursor to development of airport infrastructure.
The director also impressed on Moily the need to acquire the Dakkan Park building land abutting the new terminal building and spread over 3.21 acres as it posed a problem to the AAI - both for operational and security reasons. Noting that big fuel tankers are not able to move on the existing road to the terminal building, he said a new road with flat slope, and minus the curves of the new road should be built outside the airport premises.
On a move to increase the viability of the airport, Chandran said there is a need to request Air India Express to operate additional international flights and increase the frequency of existing flights. Chandran told the minister that there is demand for daily flights to Jeddah, Riyadh, and Sharjah. He also suggested that the Thokur railway station on the Konkan railway route be shifted to Maravoor, closer to the new terminal building.

* PM to inaugurate new airport
By Team Mangalorean
MANGALORE, October 8, 2009: If all goes well, no less than the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will inaugurate the new integrated terminal at the Bajpe international airport here. The new integrated airport terminal is almost ready and few last touches were being given.
The new international terminal will also bring the international airport tag to the Bajpe airport which will change the way the international comity of nations will look at Mangalore. It is established that the international airports all over the world have brought laurels to the countries in which they are located. More international traffic of passenger means more investment which will spur the economic activities as well as tourism and many other related activities that will improve the money flow into the region.
With the arrival of the international tag to the airport the outlook of the civic facilities will also improve in Mangalore city. The world corporate entities will start recognizing the city and the civic authorities in Mangalore will have to take measures to raise the citys outlook. The airport has already been recognized as international customs airport.

The new integrated terminal which is situated next to the old upgraded terminal boasts of international standards, aerobridges for the smooth and all weather transit of the passengers from the terminal to the aircraft, better parking facilities for aircrafts, passenger amenities like international standard cafeteria, upgraded waiting lobbies with wi-fi hotspots, banking facilities, elevators and other facilities.
The Airport Authority of India expects that more Indian and international airlines will operate to and from Mangalore. Presently the Kingfisher, Jet, Air India Express are operating domestic and international routes like Dubai, Abu Dabhi, Baharain, Doha, Kuwait and Muscat. The city is also connected to the US, UK, Australia and other countries via Bangalore International Airport at Devanahalli.
The Airport will be known for its technology driven operations, but yet it will be user friendly. Director of the Airport Mr. V.N. Chandran says that the airport will be also user friendly for the non passengers, there is a vast area for car parking which can hold over 300 cars at a time. The terminal will be eight kilometer lesser than the old terminal as it will be situated in Kenjar .
Many other facilities will be offered to the passengers as and when the traffic increases Mr. Chandran says. He however said the AAI was trying for a date from the Prime Ministers office and the local MPs have requested Mr Praful Patel the union minister of civil aviation for securing the appointment with the PM.

Mangalore: Inauguration of New Terminal in December - Moily
Mangalore: Inauguration of New Terminal at Bajpe Airport Soon - Moily
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)
Mangalore, Oct 14: Union law and justice minister, M Veerappa Moily, disclosed that the new terminal of the international airport here, that has come up at Kenjarugiri near Bajpe, will be inaugurated before December this year, by Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh.
Speaking to the reporters in the city on Tuesday October 13, after receiving petitions from the people here, he observed that the work of the terminal has been almost completed. "I have already discussed the issue of the inauguration of this terminal with the Prime Minister. A date, which might fall at the end of November or first week of December, will be fixed soon for the inauguration. During his visit on this occasion, the Prime Minister will also initiate two major projects," he divulged.
Moily said that a sum of Rs 1.25 crore had been released and tender had been called, for undertaking repairs to the damaged Shiradi Ghat section of national highway 48. He said that a permanent solution for this stretch of the road, which gets damaged frequently, would be found by concreting the road. The project to widen the national highway 17 from Kundapur to Talapady is in the final stages, and a sum of Rs 50 crore will be released for this work shortly, he explained.
Moily said that some ammendments had been made to the Criminal Procedure Code, but the same had not yet been given affect to, because of the stiff opposition faced from the lawyers. A final decision about the implementation of these ammendments would be arrived at, after holding discussions at different levels, like the Bar Associations and different levels of courts, and further steps will be taken if there are genuine difficulties and objections about these ammendments, he revealed.
Moily claimed that sanctioning of a huge sum of Rs 1,000 crore by the central government to the state for flood relief, was the first of its kind in the country. He also decried statements being made by Yeddyurappa against the apathy of the central government, terming them as having been politically motivated.

MANGALORE, October 24, 2009: It is only matter of time now for the Mangalore Airport to get international airport tag. For all practical purposes the airport is ready for full scale operations on international circuit and if the Indian Minister of External affairs Mr. S.M. Krishna is visiting the airport on Sunday on the pre-text of flagging off the aircrafts taking Haj Pilgrims.
The SMK’s visit comes in an apt time when all infrastructure development around the airport namely the re-aligned runway, taxiways, modern Air Traffic Control system and many more items already in place and the new lounge is also ready for inauguration. Mr. Krishna will also oversee the arrangements at the Airport and if it was good enough for the Prime Minister to declare it open. According to the sources in the airport Mr. Krishna will also take a look at the immigration facilities and according to Congress leaders SMK will make his observations to the PM .
The customs department has already taken steps to identify the green channel space in the new lounge at Kenjar. According to the AAI sources things have started moving in this direction. The customs department sources say that there is some movement in the department towards identifying facilities in the airport. The Police department which will have to provide immigration facility at the Airport has already promised to take necessary steps. Now that the airport is covered by customs it should be possible for the Police to have a full scale operations in addition to the security provided by the CISF.
The increase in traffic from Mangalore airport has a bearing on the economic upheaval of people in Mangalore. After it has become the second IT hub of the state the city was providing enough passengers through the airport. But elders of the city remember how difficult it was to board an airplane in the past. One had to take a taxi to the airport shelling out nothing less than half of the air fare to the taxi and pay through the nose for the air ticket. In olden days the Mangalore airport was considered as a flyer’s nightmare, as it was a table top air strip suitable only for smaller aircrafts. But now the airport is as safe as any other in the country and wider bodied aircrafts can land and take off at any time of the day. The re-aligned runway and the highly advanced Air Traffic Control system has made the air travel amenable to even the worst cases of aviophobia.
The air traffic figures of Mangalore airport shows how things have turned during the last one year. According to sources in Airport Authority of India in September 2009, 79,000 people were carried into and outside Mangalore which was an increase of 9000 travelers when compared the figures in September 2009. The Mangalore airport now handles 140 domestic arrival and departures per week and 18 international arrivals and departures per week which totals upto 158 aircrafts movement per week which an increase of 146 percent in terms of passengers since last three years.
The Congress leaders in the state have already asked Mr. Krishna to recommend to the Civil Aviation Ministry to declare it as the International airport and if Mr. Krishna is satisfied with the airport’s expansion it might even get the international tag say Congress leaders in the district.
Krishnamoorthy K December 10th, 2009, 06:13 PM MANGALORE: The trial run of flights at the new terminal of Bajpe airport will commence within a fortnight. The first trial run will take off with the domestic flight, which will be followed by an international flight within a week.
With the new terminal getting the finishing touches, airport authorities are hoping to iron out any last minute glitches with the trial run. The Rs 147 crore terminal is a `green building, which will require minimal lighting from 9 am to 5 pm due to its unique glass architecture, barring the monsoon.
The inauguration of the new terminal will probably be by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh or Union civil aviation minister Praful Patel. In view of the uncertainty over the inauguration, officials may operate the new terminal first and later inaugurate it.
Airport director Chandran told TOI the first trial run will be for the domestic flight and the passengers will be told in advance to arrive at the new terminal building. After the trial run for the domestic flight, a similar exercise will be carried out for an international flight when immigration facilities are put in place.
"Through the trial run we will be able to iron out glitches, if any," he said adding that a high level committee from Airports Authority of India (AAI), both from Chennai and New Delhi, will arrive soon to make a final assessment of the new terminal.
Chandran said the existing taxi (rented car) facility will not be available at the new terminal due to contractual obligations, hence the flight operator will be told to do make arrangements for the disembarking passengers. The same will apply for restaurant facility, both AAI and flight operator will make special refreshment arrangements for passengers arriving at the terminal on the day of the trial run. The new terminal is about eight kilometers nearer than the old terminal from the city.
The old terminal, Chandran said, will house both cargo operations as well as retiring rooms for touring officials.

engineer.akash December 16th, 2009, 01:47 PM Mangalore : New Terminal Waiting for Prime Minister's Date
Daijiworld Media Network (FR)
Mangalore, Dec 16: With 2009 almost drawing to a close the much awaited New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) at Bajpe Airport will now be a reality only in 2010 as it is waiting for the inaugural date from Prime Minister’s office. The work relating to the new Terminal Building is complete and only a nod from PM’s office fixing a date for the inauguration is awaited eagerly by the airport officials. In the meantime the Terminal is gearing up for trial flight within the next few days which will set the ball rolling for the operation of the airport.
V N Chandran who took over as Airport Director in August 10, 2009, however, is tightlipped on whether the Airport Authority of India (AAI) would go ahead with handling of international flights at the NITB keeping the formal inauguration at abeyance until getting go ahead from the Prime Ministers Office. Speaking to Daijiworld Chandran said “fixing the date for the inauguration is not something which is in my hands. The finalization of date for inaugural is done from PM’s office with the Airport Authority of India. The inputs which I am getting indicate that most likely Prime Minister will inaugurate it in January 2010. The date may be finalized any moment. In fact we have kept everything in place including ceremonial arrangements in anticipation of a date any time from now”.
The work at the new Terminal Building is almost complete, the only hitch being finalizing a suitable date for the Prime Minister to come down to Mangalore. As part of the completion process the authorities at the new Terminal are set for a trial run of the flight any time from next week. “99% of the work of the terminal building is complete. Trial run is a part of the long exercise before we open the airport for flights. There are many other aspects like aviation safety, checking-in counters, in-house activities etc., which needs careful monitoring before we go ahead with the opening of the airport for public” Chandran pointed out. The trial run include facilitating one selected aircraft operation both arrival and departure and allied activities associated with that flight. With the commissioning of the new terminal the entire premises of airport will be shifted to the new terminal and the old terminal will be used for cargo handling.
The delay in the remaining 1% of the work is according to Chandran, mainly due to the lethargy of Air India in setting up its checking-in counters at the NITB. While Jet Airways and Kingfishers have completed its work it is the government controlled Air India which has been lackadaisical in the task assigned to it.
Chandran is non-committal when asked whether he has communicated to the AAI officials about the completion of the project. “I am doing my job, doing what is expected of me”, he said responding to a query. He further added that the NITB is ready and is waiting for the final nod. With all work completed from our side it is just a matter of time. But I can say it is going to be a New Year gift for the people, probably in the month of January”.
It may be recalled that many dates were decided upon for the inauguration of the New Terminal Building time and again. In an interview to Daijiworld soon after assuming office in August this year Chandran had stated that September 23rd or 24th of 2009 was decided as the tentative date for the inauguration. He had also said after inauguration it will take another 30 to 45 days for the flights to become operational. Accordingly by November this year the new Terminal Building should have become operational but sadly it did not. It was also believed that the inauguration of the NITB at Bajpe was to coincide with the inauguration of the Mysore Airport.

Mangaloreans specially those who have been traveling to gulf and other destinations have been waiting with bated breath for the new international Airport Terminal to open for flights are now hoping against hope that they will not be hoodwinked again by setting another target for the inauguration. Apart from being an airport with the capacity to handle international flights with modern amenities the reduced distance of 6 kms to the airport has been another major incentive for travelers.
It is time to again cross our fingers and remain calm and patient to see the long cherished dream of Mangaloreans becoming a reality when the NITB becomes operational, the long awaited New Year gift, promised for many years now. Aren’t we reminded of being ‘better late than never”?

engineer.akash December 16th, 2009, 06:19 PM Successful trial run of domestic flight
TNN 16 December 2009, 09:47pm IST
MANGALORE: Authorities of Bajpe airport successfully carried out the first trial run at the new terminal building of the airport using a non-scheduled Delhi bound flight (VTCLC) from Goa here on Wednesday. The flight captained by Manish Shukla on its return journey started from the new international terminal building apron, and taxied via the new taxiway (e), entered the active runway before taking off for Goa at 4.55 pm.
Airport director Chandran told TOI that the trial run was a success and it helped the authorities test all the major facilities pertaining to handling of a flight put in place at the new international terminal building. The new apron, taxiway was tested with satisfactory results, Chandran said adding that the trial run was the culmination of a series of checks put in place and exercise carried out in close coordination with various stakeholders.
"We have checked these parameters at close quarters, as well as assessed the safety scenario," Chandran said. Asserting that the new airport is now ready to commence operations, Chandran said the successful conduct of the trial run is a major step forward in the actual commencement of flights from here.
"I will forward results of the trial run to AAI on Thursday," he said adding this would help them take a call on future course of action that needs to be taken.
The trial run of a domestic flight will be followed by similar exercise with international flight. A high level committee from AAI, from Chennai and New Delhi will arrive thereafter to make final assessment of the terminal building.

They havent had a trial for International flights. Inauguration is only a formality, The PM is supposed to inaugurate the MSEZ,St Aloysius campus at Ullal,Mysore Airport etc. I do not think they are wasting time in the meantime.

My suggestion is that, they can have volvo's I guess, the curves are negotiable no doubt by the Volvo's, If they can curve on the Chamundi hills in mysore I guess they can here as well Provided they make this one way...........
They must use the old road for the arrival traffic and the new road for the departure traffic
Coz people are not in a hurry to go to their homes after arriving so they can use the old airport road, let the new road be for the departure traffic.
The new road would be very safe if they make it one way,Introduce VOLVO buses to the airport from various parts of the city,Best idea and discourage Autos.
I wonder how the volvos would sail on those lovely concrete roads
Mangalore rocks
Waiting to see Volvos in Mangalore as well
sudheeshnairs January 13th, 2010, 08:37 PM That road appears very narrow and dangerous. It appears more like a go karting track on a gradient.
The curves are immediate one after the other. And in the probability of a traffic jam it would be testing times for the 'expertise' of the drivers as well as their vehicle's clutch. And a heavy rain would make the settings perfect.:)
I have driven many times through Chamundi Hills, that is a proper two lane road. No comparison with this

There were some comments on the state of the road ,rather the steepness. There were reports in the media regarding the suitability of roads for the oil tankers as the flights would have to be refuelled. If the tankers do make it then oil slick, skidding will be a problem during monsoon.. There was a proposal to construct another road less steeper than the one constructed thro Dakkan park...It is a catch 22 situation ,almost everything is in place, the fourlaning from Mangalore city to the Airport is almost complete. Only 50% of fourlaning from Kavoor to Airport is remaining, test run for domestic flights was conducted.Unfortunately the test run for the AAI employee's car along the GO KARTING slope failed! (if the reports are true)
Peter Abraham has taken over. I am told he is quite senior and the post of Airport director has been equated to GM.

ajay ramchandran January 31st, 2010, 09:23 AM Airport : Four Directors in Eight Months Hampers Progress

It is generally said that comparisons are odious. Nevertheless situations call for such comparisons especially when undue delay and apathy nullifies the efforts and progress made by a predecessor and the successors fails to carry on the same tempo of progress. The fate of the new airport terminal at Bajpe Airport which awaits inauguration for quite some time now, is the situation referred to here that necessitates the comparison. When M R Vasudeva was the Airport Director tremendous headway was made as far as converting the tiny Mangalore Airport into that of an International standard one.
Present Airport Director Peter Abraham
Ever since his promotion transfer to Coimbotore in April last year there has been a change of guard at the helm too often and one is bound to remember and compare his services with the present people at the top and one need not say the result has not particularly pleasing. In the last 8 months there have been four Airport Directors. M R Vasudeva B R Sena, V N Chandran and present Director Peter Abraham have been Airport Directors in the short span of 8 months. Peter Abraham assumed charge from V N Chandran in the last week of December 2009. Going by the trend one wonders how many more Directors and changes are in the offing before the new terminal sees the light of the day which is not too far if the airport authorities are to be taken on their face value.
Inauguration of new terminal in March?
With the tentative dates given for its inauguration of the new terminal getting postponed for reasons best known to the Airport Authorities both in Mangalore and Delhi, scores of people who have been fervently waiting for the new terminal to become operational, are getting impatient and are crestfallen.
According to the Peter Abraham K, the new Airport Director the new terminal will be inaugurated in March this year. However, he refused to divulge any more information including any further details on the eagerly awaiting direct flights to Saudi about which scores of people are keen to know. When daijiworld contacted him to elicit more information he could only say that 99% of the work at the terminal is complete and the remaining work would be completed by February and terminal would inaugurated in March this year. “The date of the VIP is awaited and the matter is handled by the Airport Authority of India. Mangalore Airport cannot do much about it”, he stated.
When asked whether there were any bottlenecks with regard to the new terminal to become operational he said “our work is in the finishing stage. There is no problem with the approach road to the new terminal either. We are giving a final touch to the passing facilities which are expected to be ready by February this year”.
He also evaded an answer when asked whether the terminal would become operational in the event of the formal inauguration gets postponed beyond March. With regard to direct flights from Mangalroe to Saudi he said “we are not going to start any flights as of now. It all depends on the airlines which should come forward with the proposal and the final decision will be taken at our headquarters”. In fact he was getting vexed at any query relating to the inauguration of the new terminal or about the new flights from Mangalore airport. It gave an impression as though he is yet to get acquainted with the set up and the situation here, which is indeed not expected from a person holding such an eminent post especially when Mangalore airport all set to attain international airport status. The only course left now is to hope against hope that it will be inaugurated and becomes operational by March this year. Many Mangaloreans had premonition about the things to come by and it was precisely for this reason they were saying Vasudeva should have been brought back to oversee the inauguration of the new terminal.
Saudi Flights – a non starter
Mangaloreans settled in Saudi Arabia have been fancying the idea of flying directly to Mangalore from Saudi for almost three years hoping it is only a matter of time before their long cherished dreams become a reality. They had collected signatures and had even submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister and continued their efforts in this direction. Since then there has been enormous changes and Air India Express has introduced direct flights to six gulf countries including Kuwait, Dubai, Bahrain, Doha, Muscat and Abu Dabhi. Hopes were raised for Saudi also as Air India gave a proposal to their headquarters to start direct flights. Station Manager of Air India Chellam Prasad confirmed it saying “we have given the proposal to the headquarters sometime ago and are waiting for the approval”. The present Airport Director has now stated they are not going to start any direct flights to Saudi. According to reliable source there has been no response from the Civil Aviation Ministry for the proposal.
There seems to be an orchestrated move to sideline the country’s national career and make way for private operators to make merry at the cost of the national airlines. Within the country too the national airlines has been made to bear the brunt of efforts to systematically chuck out the national airlines. According to reliable sources some flights of national airlines which were going to full strength in Mumbai and Bangalore have been stopped and given to private operators. According to reliable sources the flights to gulf countries will also be slowly handed over to the private operators who are keen to grab the opportunity. That includes flights to Saudi Arabia also and the private operators already tom-tom about this move of the Ministry. An Air India employee said on condition of anonymity that Civil Aviation Ministry is poisoning the national airlines to death and slowly the vast assets of the national airlines will also be handed over to the leading private operators. It is said that it is this move that delays the introduction of direct flights to Saudi Arabia from Mangalore.
National airlines are the pride of any country and this move to poison it to death will only give an upper hand to private operators who will then have a free hand to enhance the fair according to their whims and fancy.
One can only hope good sense prevails and such nefarious moves of the ministry are thwarted. Let us hope the long awaited of Mangaloreans in Saudi will see the light of the day soon. But first let us wait for the new terminal to become operational which, hopefully, will come about in March this year as promised.

They have built rapid exit taxi ways from the new runway to the old one, so that the aircrafts can rapidly exit the runway making it available for other aircrafts to land or takeoff. As of now since they are using the old terminal aircrafts still have to make an u-turn on the runway and head back some length of the runway before it can use the rapid exit taxi way. Earlier the aircrafts had to travel all the length of the runway before going to the terminal.
When the new terminal starts operating there will be no such problems.

MYSORE: Five weeks after the formal launch of work on upgrading the Mysore airport near here, earthwork for building two runways and construction of a boundary wall are proceeding at a brisk pace.
Deputy General Manager of Airports Authority of India (AAI) M.N.N. Rao told The Hindu that a survey to construct a terminal building, which would accommodate 200 passengers, had been completed. "We are now functioning from the old terminal building. We will soon set up a site office before bringing down the old terminal building," he said.

Krishnamoorthy K March 29th, 2010, 06:16 AM * Airport director says its inauguration date will soon be fixed
MANGALORE: The new integrated terminal building of the Mangalore Airport at Kenjar will be operational in a month's time, according to Peter Abraham, director of the airport.
In an informal chat with presspersons on the sidelines of the arrival of the Delhi-Mangalore-Kozhikode-Delhi flight at the Bajpe airport on Sunday, he said the date for its formal inauguration would be fixed within three weeks. He said the State Government had laid a two-lane concrete road connecting the new facility with the Mangalore-Bajpe-Kateel-Mulky Road, which can be used as an entry road and the zilla panchayat road (towards Dakkan Park building) can be used for exit. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) was laying a 400-m road to connect the new terminal building with the zilla panchayat road. It would be completed in a month, he said. The AAI was also widening the perimeter road inside the airport to facilitate smooth movement of fuel tankers. This was also expected to be completed in a month, he said. Mr. Abraham said that even if these road works were not completed as stipulated, it would not come in the way of inaugurating the terminal building.
With the opening of the new terminal building at Kenjar, the distance between the city and the airport will be reduced by about eight kilometres. The airport terminal at Bajpe is about 22 km from the city.
Union Minister for Civil Aviation Praful Patel had laid the foundation stone for the Rs. 147-crore integrated terminal building on October 3, 2006. The new terminal building has been designed to handle 500 passengers at a time and five aircraft can be parked at a time in the apron. In addition, it has facility to park 300 cars.

barrykul March 31st, 2010, 07:34 AM Wow, this is a stunner. Must say that Mangaluru Airport has a unique character! love the architecture. The Aerobridges turned out very nice. However, the signs could have been better nevertheless a great first attempt. The old airport building was a true cowshed. The people of Mangaluru have gotten a great new airport. I can't believe that the staid AAI created such a beauty. Hats of to Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, his vision of mini-ratnas for Tier 2, 3 cities is turning out to be a home run and a success.

Mangalore Airport is a table top airport. The old Airport ,the one that is being used currently has valleys on either side of the old runway. It has a second concrete runway as well The new terminal was built after filling up two valleys bringing the city closer by 8KM. The final part of the four laning of Airport road(18 kms from City Centre) is going on. (part of 200 crores fourlaning of roads going on in Mangalore city)
They are currently constructing another exit road from Airport thro Dakkan Park and the current approach road will be made one way for safety purposes as it is steep. The new road construction will finish this month end and hopefully after that PM .Praful patel etc would inaugurate it. Currently the private airlines are all setting up their counters.
Krishnamoorthy K April 4th, 2010, 10:24 AM Bangalore: Mangalore is just 10 days away from a landmark. But nobody is making a noise about it. And, nobody really knows why.
Perhaps they are awaiting a dignitary to bless the much-talked-about landmark, the new terminal of the Mangalore International Airport built at a cost of Rs150 crore.
According to the schedule, the terminal building should have been completed in November 2009. No inauguration date has been fixed. Perhaps they are awaiting a political biggie to pass through and, if he agrees, they may ask him to inaugurate the terminal as well.
But a plan has emerged. Speaking to DNA, law minister Veerappa Moily said, “I have sought dates from the prime minister and I am hopeful of getting him to inaugurate the facility.” Sources in the civil aviation ministry also confirmed that requests have gone to the PMO from both the civil aviation ministry and from the minister of law, M Veerappa Moily. No confirmation has been received from the PMO so far.
MP of Mangalore Nalin Kumar Kateel says, “I have no information about the inauguration, I heard that the AAI was waiting for the prime minister to inaugurate it. The AAI should expedite work and make sure that the terminal is ready for use this holiday season.” Airport general manager Peter Abraham said: “The airport will be ready to use in the next 10-15 days. Right now, concessionaires are building cubicles.”
When asked if the airport inauguration was close at hand, Abraham said, “We haven’t thought about the inauguration so far. We may not wait for a VVIP to do the honours but if a VVIP is passing through Mangalore close to the date of completion, we will request him to inaugurate the terminal."
We’ll wait and see if such a coincidence flies.

Mangalore, April 5: With the new international terminal at Bajpe airport now ready for commencing operation, the AAI is hunting for a suitable inaugurator and it is no mood to settle anybody else than the prime minister, after all, it is one of the land marks in the country.
The integrated international terminal as it is called, is situated next to the old upgraded terminal. It has modern amenities and facilities like aerobridges which will facilitate the passengers to walk out of the aircraft directly into the airport arrival lounge without have to bear the heat of the tarmac between the aircraft and the arrival lounge. The baggage clearance area has been made more spacious and the movement of the baggage on the conveyor belt faster.
On the departure side, the AAI has made even better passenger amenities like international standard cafeteria, upgraded waiting lobbies with wi-fi hotspots, banking facilities, elevators and other facilities. Public address system has been further clarified which enhances the clarity of the announcer’s voice.
But will there be more airlines starting their services from Mangalore to different destinations around the globe? When asked, the AAI authorities said presently the Kingfisher, Jet, Air India Express and Air India Regional were operating domestic and international routes like Abu Dabhi, Baharain, Doha, Kuwait, Dubai and Muscat. The city is also connected to the US, UK, Australia and other countries via Bangalore International Airport at Devanahalli, which was enough to make the Mangalore International Airport the second best connected airport after Bangalore in Karnataka state.
The Airport today has traffic of 32 flights landing and taking off every day and has nearly 2500 passengers arriving and departing.

The Airport today has traffic of 32 flights landing and taking off every day and has nearly 2500 passengers arriving and departing.
adding more....
According to the General Manager of the Mangalore International Airport, Mr. Peter Abraham, every operation of the Airport has been made compatible with the international standards. Mangalore airport has been prepared to take up technology integration at any point of time in the future and even in the present context it was one of the best technology integrated airport, he added.
The travel time to the new terminal from Mangalore city, when fully operational, will be 8 kilometers lesser than the old terminal at Bajpe. This was due to the fact that the new terminal was situated in Kanjar and was directly accessible from the state highway. In addition, a new Zilla Panchayat road has been constructed to the distance of 1.7 kilometers to join the Dakkan park road which will make the new terminal even more closer.
Speaking to Mangalorean.com, MP of Mangalore, Mr. Nalin Kumar Kateel, said that the terminal was ready for inauguration and would be soon inaugurated though it was not definite who would inaugurate it. "I agree that it should be the chief executive of the elected government. I have told the AAI authorities that the passengers coming and going from this airport this holiday season should get the benefit of the new international terminal. Though major structural works are over, there are many more to be completed including interiors, false roofing, ducting and sound proofing. According to my sources these things could be completed within a month or two. I want the passengers arriving for new festive season this year to arrive in the new terminal," Kateel said.
He also added that Mangalore which is now on the world map of development would get more flights from different parts of the globe. "The airport parking bay can now hold upto five aircrafts at a time and the expansion work is going on for accommodating two more flights," he said.
"The new terminal building is ready in all respects, we have completed all works and allotted slots to each of the airlines, concessionaires and most of them are now busy setting up their offices and making minute adjustments according to their company requirements" says Mr. Abraham.
"The beauty of this new terminal is that it is comparable to any international airport either in Mumbai or Delhi. Though it is scaled down in size and operations due to traffic, passengers will get the same type of service and facilities what they get in big cities elsewhere" he said adding that "Aerobridges, elevators, escalators, easier exit and entry into airport from the car park area have been as scientifically designed on the lines of its metro cousins."
Mr Abraham said the new terminal at Bajpe was one among the 35 other tier II city airport expansions all over the country, but each airport was different in design, but there is a brand equity in service and facilities he added.
He said "though there are only two aerobridges right now provision has been made to install more if needed at the new terminal. Mangalore airport has an advantage of having five aircraft bays at the new terminal and five more at the existing terminal. Even when the arrival and departure operations are fully shifted to the new terminal the old terminal building will be kept ready for taking up arrival and departure operations at short notice," he said.
According to the sources in the civil aviation ministry "there was nothing to stop Mangalore airport from getting the international tag as it now has the customs coverage. There are enquiries from various airlines plying on both domestic and international routes to operate from Mangalore, since international airports in Bangalore and Kochi are far away from the coastal area of Karnataka. Mangalore will see a spurt in international traffic once the new terminal at Mangalore was declared open," Mr Abraham said.

Our Bureau
Mangalore, May 10
The new integrated terminal building of Mangalore airport will be inaugurated on May 15, according to Mr Krishna J. Palemar, Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister.
Addressing presspersons here on Monday, he said that the Union Civil Aviation Minister and the Karnataka Chief Minister will attend the inaugural function. The new integrated terminal building will reduce the distance between the airport and Mangalore city by 8 km.
The Karnataka Government is planning to build an approach road to the terminal building at a cost of Rs 7.60 crore, and the Cabinet approval for this work is expected soon, he said.
Mr Palemar said that the Karnataka Government has approved a grant of Rs 100 crore for improving the basic infrastructure in Mangalore city. By using this grant, 32 roads in the city have been taken up for concreting.
Of them, works on 22 roads have been completed.
He said that works have been completed on laying water supply pipelines in Mangalore city at a cost of Rs 106 crore. To ensure 24-hour water supply to Mangalore city, a vented dam is being constructed at Thumbe near Mangalore at an estimated cost of Rs 57 crore, he said.
The Minister said that the 72 km stretch of the State highway connecting Mani and Sampaje in Dakshina Kannada district will be made into two-lane road at a cost of Rs 176 crore.
The Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr B.S. Yeddyurappa, will launch the road works on May 23, he added.

By Team Mangalorean Bangalore
Mangalore May 13, 2010: The New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) at Kenjar, housing both international and domestic flights, after long wait, is all set for inauguration on May 15 and is likely to be operational after a week of the formal inauguration. The construction work of the building was almost over in December last year. The NITB project was developed at a cost of Rs 150 crore, excluding the expenses for the road construction.
The granite-floored new terminal was built by glass and chrome, without using concrete anywhere. Central air conditioning system was installed in the terminal building, which has 18,200 sqm floor area and has been designed to handle 1000 passengers at a time. A 43,000 sqm apron has been constructed at a cost of Rs 18.19 crore and connected to the new concrete runway. NITB is almost three times larger in area than the Bajpe Airport. The new terminal has also reduced the distance between Mangalore city and Airport by about seven km.

Being the second biggest airport in the state, which operates domestic as well as international flights, Mangalore Airport is currently operating over 25 international flights and a few international flights serve this airport on daily basis. There are many domestic airlines such as Air Deccan, Indian Airlines, Jet Airways that operate to and from domestic terminal on regular basis at different time intervals.
With the commissioning of NITB, built by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) on 18,200 sqm at Kenjar, will further accelerate this growth of Mangalore International Airport. There are quite a few leading shipping companies eyeing to set up a base in Bajpe surroundings, which is definitely a sign of progress.
Even Gulf-based freight forward companies are planning to step into Mangalore. The project, which began in 1988, was completed in December 2009 after facing several hurdles. Being away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Kenjar, a hilly terrain surrounded by the lush green vegetation and Gurpur River, has all the potentials of emerging as a place of tourist attraction.

rajone May 13th, 2010, 06:24 PM Mangalore airport seems to be in for some big development in air traffic...
Way to go MANGALORE!!!!
Krishnamoorthy K May 15th, 2010, 08:15 AM Mangalore is all set to get the facilities from new integrated terminal building of the airport with the Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, and the Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr B.S. Yeddyurappa, inaugurating it on Saturday.
Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Mr V.P. Agarwal, Chairman of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), said that around Rs 250 crore has been spent on the development of the new terminal building and the runway. Another Rs 100 crore will be invested in developing other infrastructure such as parallel taxiway and air traffic control block.
Giving break-up of the investments made, Mr Agarwal said that nearly Rs 180 crore has been spent on the new integrated terminal building and another Rs 12 crore on fire tenders and other fire safety measures. An amount of around Rs 50 crore was spent on developing the second runway during 2006.
“We are contemplating further investments in parallel taxiway, and the new air traffic control-cum-technical block. This investment may be to the tune of Rs 100 crore,” he said.
Faster access
The new integrated terminal building with all the facilities would reduce the distance between the city and the airport by 7 km.
Stating that AAI is committed to doing more for Mangalore airport, he said with better facilities, more airlines can be accommodated. The moment traffic increases, more connectivity will be there internationally and domestically, he said.
The airport has recorded a growth rate of 9 per cent. This is good sign, and better facilities will result in faster growth, Mr Agarwal said.
INTERNATIONAL STATUS
Asked when the airport will get international status, he said AAI has provided all the facilities required for an international airport at Mangalore. A proposal has been submitted to the Union Government in this regard, he said.
(Currently, Mangalore has the status of customs aerodrome having permission to operate flights to international destinations in West Asia.)
User development fee
Asked whether user development fee (UDF) will be levied at the airport, he said the development of the table-top runway and terminal building at the airport is a cost-intensive process. The levy becomes unavoidable in such circumstances. “We intend to levy some UDF in Mangalore airport. But, this is yet to be decided by the Government,” Mr Agarwal said.
He thanked the Karnataka Government for its support in the development of Mangalore airport.

jammy97 May 15th, 2010, 08:28 AM Mangalore : New Terminal - Inauguration on Saturday - Operations in Early June
Daijiworld Media Network—Mangalore (CN)
Mangalore, May 14: The inauguration of the much-awaited new terminal building of Mangalore airport is scheduled to be held on Saturday May 15. Praful Patel, union minister of state for civil aviation, will inaugurate it.
“The new terminal building is closer by seven kilometers than the old terminal from the city and is easier for commuters to access. The dream of the people of this area will be realized with the inauguration”, said V P Agarwal, chairman, Airports Authority of India.
“The airport will start operations from the first week of June this year. The airport will operate as a customs airport and infrastructure facilities will be upgraded to that of an international airport”, he said, adding that the new terminal building has two aerobridges among other facilities.
“The Mangalore airport has witnessed growth every year. The total cost of the new airport is approximately Rs 250 crore”, said Agarwal. He thanked the state government for co-operating with the land acquisition.
“The one access road provided by the state government is not wide enough”, he said.
“There will be 16 flights operating from the airport and the old terminal will be used for cargo service or aviation education purposes”, said Agarwal adding that nothing has been decided yet and if it is to be used for cargo, there are two options—one is belly cargo and another one is dedicated cargo.
“Mysore airport will also be inaugurated on Saturday. The AAI will take up the work on Hubli and Belgaum airports after the inauguration of Mangalore and Mysore”, said the chairman, prioritizing Hubli.

Krishnamoorthy K May 15th, 2010, 05:55 PM Mangalore, May 15 (PTI) Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel today announced that an additional Rs 100 crore would be spent on upgradation work, including extension of the runway, at the airport here.
The existing length of 8038 ft runway is insufficient to operate big aircrafts, he told reporters on the sidelines of inauguration of the new Integrated Terminal Building, worth Rs 160 crore, at Bajpe Airport near here.
This needed an additional runway length of 1000 ft. The work would be completed in one year, he said.
The Minister said a proposal for declaring Mangalore Airport as an international airport was already before the Union Cabinet for approval.

kudlabobs May 18th, 2010, 08:36 AM Trichy airport runway is same as mangalore runway 8000 ft. But they have given permission for international airlines like Airasia, Paramount Airways, Srilankan Airlines, Mahin Lanka, Tigerairways etc. Why can't they give permission to mangalore airport. This praful patel is fooling us, he just want Air india express to go on for 2 more years while completing 1000 ft runway.

FYI,
Air India Express, Air Asia, Sri Lankan and Tiger operate the same category of aircrafts, Airbus320/321 and Boeing 737-800.
The rwy expansion is to enable IXE to accomodate wide bodied aircrafts without any load penalty.
Just relax, Don't believe the conspirarcy theories floating around.
ATLfan May 19th, 2010, 03:35 AM in my opinion, some of these AAI airports look better than the privately developed delhi terminals, which are extraordinarily bland. people need to stop hating on AAI asap
rajone May 19th, 2010, 09:27 AM The architecture of Mangalore airport is sleek and modern, inline with character of Mangalore city.

If that was the case, Mangalore would still have the old cowshed instead of the swanky new terminal.....
Cov Boy May 20th, 2010, 12:51 AM Yes this is amazing!
This airport has surprised me in terms of the design.
Would like to see more of the interior since the airport has been inaugurated.
rajone May 20th, 2010, 05:02 AM I guess Mangalore Airport is the only airport among tier 2 cities to have jet-bridges.

Himmat, are you sure only these airports have jet bridges? To be frank I was wondering since you said that.
All the three International Airports in Kerala have aerobridges. Calicut Airport has 3 jetbridges, Cochin Airport has 5 and Trivandrum Airport 5 aero bridges (Two in Terminal II and Three in Terminal III). I think there would be more Airports with aerobridges.
bajk May 21st, 2010, 03:37 PM ^^
Two Aero bridges are operational in Trichy airport and provision for the third is given.
