I guess this is one of a kind. Biathlon in a football stadium. Since a few years a Biathlon competition is held successfully in the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen. This year it was sold out with 52,000 people.

You can see a bit of the course in the very first picture. One round is 1264 meters. I also found an outdoor picture that I put into my first post and this:

According to stadionwelt.de the interior of the stadium could be increased to create enough space for the extra seating
ØlandDK November 24th, 2008, 07:48 PM Interesting. That would be amazing!
Sponsor November 24th, 2008, 11:57 PM But distance between seats and ice might make event uncomfortable to watch.

miguelon November 27th, 2008, 04:51 AM I really love this stadium.,,it is big enough, great sidelines, the retractable roof, THE TERRACE, a great example of how a modern, safe stadium can still get a terrace for the real fans.
only the outside is not that good but does the job.
my only question is why there are so many entrance or access gates ( of whatever is called) on the upper deck, seems excessive for a tier that is not that big. a lot of seats could be added. the lower tier is bigger and has only one row of entrace gates....
in a fast estimate, each gate, takes about 77 seats,,, that multiplied by 40 gates all around, gives you 3080 seats.
mihai_alex November 27th, 2008, 10:43 AM ^^

There are to many entrances.
I counted 650 seats for each gate and multiplied by 40 gives a total capacity of 26000 on the second tier...so 3080 isn't that much.

It can be done, and as I remember seats cover those terrace areas, during UEFA, or international matches, also during the 2006 World Cup.
Still i think is more of a blessing to have standing areas in a stadium, is better for the athmosphere and fans wallets

the field is lower than the football field. the reason is that the footbal field can drive out complete with grass (as you can see in the pictures 4 and 5 of post#6!), and the final level is 4m under the football level...

But Moscow and Oslo have set the trend for bigger arenas for the song contest. The Eurovision started off in thetres from the 50's to the 70's and then started to use convention centers in the 80's and early 90's, which was followed by indoor arenas in recent contests

No wonder, the membranes collapse!
take a look at the retractable roof: the membranes ar much "smaller", or supperted with sub-constructions! the fixed roof has HUGE membranes, which means more surface, which collects more snow/weight. but without sufficiently support...
can't they replace the membranes with metal trapezoid-sheets, like at the tt-arena in istanbul?! that must be possible. as far as i know, membranes aren't much more light, but less solid.

It's just a question! Don't answer like that!
I just want to know if a temporary solution exist or no because those gaps exist since december snow...
Just say yes or no.

Why don't you do some research yourself to answer your own question as opposed to leading a line of questions that will no doubt end in some nonsense commentary along the lines of "really poor stadium /bad roof design/ Lille's new stadium is way better than this etc"
Do you honestly think having gaps in the stadium roof is anything other than a temporary thing for a Bundesliga club who got to the last four in Europe (and could at this juncture maybe get to the final still)? It's pretty obvious they cannot replace the damage mid season without suffering a loss of capacity or closing the stadium altogether. Use a bit of common sense please or if you genuinely cannot surpress the urge to talk utter garbage then stay in your Lille thread rather than polluting the rest of the threads with your nonsense
Axelferis April 28th, 2011, 04:05 PM Could someone from germany knowing better the situation could answer me please?
-decisions taken to replace or not with the same material
-schedule of final works etc...
Thank you :)

I am from germany.
the new rumours and the new trend in poor german Bundesliga are:
- Not to replace broken roof parts.
- destruct the whole roof, when almost every membrane is collapsed.
- The secret Goal is to have an fully open Bowl, for a much better atmosphere. like in france ligue 1.
- And the semi-secret goal is to make all the other fans jealous. they should say: "we want to see the stars, not the game." and "Its so warm inside this covered stadium. i want to breathe and get wet"
You're wellcome :)
Laurence2011 April 28th, 2011, 05:16 PM i dont see why people are so bothered about getting wet at a football game.... if we're that bothered we should just build retractable roofs for out cities haha, anyway doesn't germany have a winter break with their league?

the minimum of comfort criterias for a stadium of XXI century is to be at least sheltered to see a good spectacle no? :)

hmmm i'd say the nou camp shows some good spectacles and is home to one of if not the best team in europe and most of the stadium is uncovered.

I've a season ticket for Schalke and I'm interested in any news about this stadium.
Schalke 04 recently made a contract for 7 new membrans. The company will use polyester membrans instead of fiber membrans, cause they are stronger.
This will cost 2.6 million €.
To replace the old fiber membrans will cost 10.6 million €.
