Rotary donates books to Zambo Norte towns

Dipolog City (25 August) -- Public elementary and secondary school in the third congressional district of Zamboanga del Norte have recently received thousands of books from the United State of America through the Rotary Club of Dipolog.

Edna Capili-Chan, president of the Rotary Club here disclosed that the 17,000 books from Kansas, Missouri arrived in the city last week.

The books worth US $12,000.00 (roughly P576,000.00) were donated by the US-based Children International (CI) in Kansas, Missouri through its Philippine counterpart CI-Philippines Housing Foundation, Inc.

Chan said the books, which will turned over to the provincial schools division for distribution to recipient-schools, are a part of Rotary's ongoing program aimed at helping public elementary and secondary schools in the province acquire reference materials.

"These books consist of Math, Science and English," said Chan, adding that the Rotary Club has shouldered the freight and handling cost amounting to P38,000. No tariffs and customs duties were paid for the books, however.

Chan, on the other hand also said that aside from the books, the Rotary club is also conducting healthy child program seminars for children in the depressed barangays of the city.

Some elementary school teachers were also given free training on information and communication technology (ICT), courtesy of the club.

An elementary school at Upper Dicayas in this city has also received water pipes for its water system and a month-long feeding program from the Rotary club. (PF/PIA-ZN

Dapitan celebrates Kinabayo Festival with 3-in-1 events

DAPITAN City has launched a diversified fiesta celebration of its Patron St. James or Señor Santiago for the locals through a three-in-one affair, combining religious, cultural and sports events in its Kinabayo Festival 2009.

The Kinabayo Festival kicked off July 16 and will culminate on July 31 with various events taking place within the Shrine City of the Philippines.

Cultural events

One of the primary events is the Kinabayo 2009 Street Dance and Final Showdown slated on July 25. Kinabayo 2009 is a free interpretation contest open to all interested groups or organization based within or outside the city.

The interpretative dance must infuse the “Sinug” with the use of parpagayo also known as the San Francisco leaves as a form of veneration. Kinabayo dace step called “prancing” and the musical piece “Gozos ni Sr. Santiago” are strongly advised as part during the dance ritual.


Councilor Apple Marie Agolong, chair of the Committee on Tourism in the City Council, in coordination with the City Tourism Division under Engr. Podiolan Porlas, had traveled to neighboring provinces in the Zamboanga Peninsula area to invite them to send delegation to the Kinabayo Festival.

Another highlight in the cultural event – the Search for Miss Dapitan – started off with the presentation of candidates during the Preliminary Judging on Filipiniana and Casual Attires last July 16, at the Marine Park.

Last July 19, the candidates were judged with their swimwear and talent presentations, at the Marine Park.

The Coronation Night will be held on July 23, at the Dapitan City Cultural and Sports Center, where winners will be announced in the following categories: Best in Subanen Attire, Best in Maria Clara Circa ’50, Best in Swimwear, Best in Talent, Best in Casual Attire and Best in Evening Gown, aside from the major prizes at stake amounting to P25,000 (Ms. Dapitan), P20,000 (1st Runner Up), P15,000 (2nd Runner Up), and consolation prizes of P10,000 for non winners.

Other cultural events included live band shows, the 117th Jose Rizal Arrival commemorative program, at the Sta. Cruz landing site; DepEd Night Cultural Show, at the Marine Park, a major local and foreign tourist destination in Dapitan City; Kids and Teens Model Search, at the Cultural and Sports Center; Hip-Hop Competition, held at the Cultural and Sports Center; Balik-Pinoy Folk Song Competition, at the Gloria de Dapitan; Dog Fashion Show; Jose Rizal Memorial State College Night (July 20), at the Marine Park; Drum, Lyre and Buggle Corps (July 21), City Plaza; Rizal Memorial Institute Night (July 21), Marine Park; Shrine City Ballet.

Religious commemoration

Sinug and Kinabayo rituals are being adapted by Dapitanons in annual Kinabayo Festival, where a two-day religious celebration of the annual patronal feasts of St. James the Greater: The “Sinug”, a dance procession venerating the patron saint and “Kinabayo”, an exotic and colorful pageant reenacting the Spanish-Moorish wars, particularly the battle of Covadonga and Clavijo, where the Spanish forces took their stand against the Saracens. They were able to reverse the tide of the war with the miraculous apparition of Nuestra Sra. Del Pillar and St. James the Greater.

For this year, Dapitan commemorates the events by offering daily, at 6:00 p.m., Jornada, passing through the main thoroughfares of the city, and having a novena mass at the St. James Church.

On the 24th of July, the annual “Patunob” religious activity will be held at the St. James Church and at high noon the most awaited “repique” towards the vicinity of the city plaza.

At 4:00 p.m., a religious procession in honor of Sr. Santiago and Sra. Del Pilar will be held on the same day, passing through selected city streets. Jornada and a novena follow.

On July 25, a Eucharistic Celebration will be celebrated from 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the St. James Church.

Sports development

On July 20, the Dapitan City Athletic Association banner had been hoisted, signaling the start of the four-day sports activity for the elementary and high school division of the Department of Education (DepEd).

Dubbed as Dapitan City Sports Festival, at least, five districts within the city have participated in the DACC led by their coaches and school supervisors.

The athletes will play in almost all events being played in the regional athletic meet.

Dapitan City Mayor Dominador Jalosjos Jr. has directed the early holding of the sports events following the announcement that the city will host next year’s Zamboanga Peninsula Regional Athletic Association meet.

“The regional sports event -- to be held earlier than scheduled next year due to the elections -- has been one of the reasons for the early holding of the DACC,” Alemarlou Dagpin, secretary to the mayor, said. That is why we decided to merge the sports activities during the Kinabayo Festival to scout for potential athletes and prepare them to play big roles in the ZPRAA meet that we will host probably in February, next year,” Dagpin said.

Dagpin said the holding of the Kinabayo Festival this year cannot be compared with other festivals, such as the Hudyaka, that the city hosted last July.

He said that this is a unique celebration of three events – religious, cultural and sports – that the city is holding for the first time.

Department of Tourism 9 Regional Director James Elridge Adreincem said though that the Hudyaka euphoria is still around and local and foreign tourists may expect a higher, if not the same, kind of enthusiasm and cultural presentations as that of Hudyaka’s.

He expressed optimism though that Dapitan City, being a major tourist destination due to Dakak Park and Beach Resort, will eventually fulfill the expectations.

In an interview at his satellite office in Dapitan, Director Adreincem said trips down memory lane is already a part of travels being held to Dapitan City, following the success of the Hudyaka 2009, plus the presence of Dakak and the recently opened FantasyLand inside the city’s commercial center, Gloria de Dapitan.

Dakak, Gloria de Dapitan and FantasyLand are owned by former Zamboanga del Norte congressman Romeo Jalosjos, also known as the locality’s “Father of Tourism” and Father of Memoirs of Rizal.”

Other sports events during the Kinabayo include The Mayor Dominador G. Jalosjos, Jr. Cup Open Dart Tournament; 1st Dapitan Kinabayo Festival Shooting Competition; Invitation Drag Race Competition; 2nd Invitation Women Beach Volleyball (Elimination Rounds).

On July 22, the Kinabayo Festival Double Bowling Tournament at Exodus Bowledrome (July 24); 2nd Invitational Women Beach Volleyball, at Sunset Boulevard; Raft Rowing at Sulangon to Aquamarine Park; Off-road Competition at Road 17, Lawa-an; Horse Racing, at Aplaya Vida Beach, Sunset Blvd, Dawo; and on July 25, The 2nd Mayor Dominador G. August 11, 2009, Dipolog City, Zanorte — There is no better way for me to enjoy my pizza at Sights and Sounds Resto Bar than watching the sunset. Good thing I took my camera with me ,and ask the manager if they can give me access at the 3rd floor to get photos of the sunset and the boulevard. But, setting and the 2nd floor’s terrace is good enough to see the sun touch the sea.

You can find this Resto at the second floor of a new building near Karyll’s Grill. They also offer exclusive rooms at the 3rd floor with videoke and jacuzzi.

Expect prices are slightly higher than the average. Pizza’s price starts at Php 199.00 for the Medium. And a Glass of Coke is at Php 30.00. But, friendly attendants, nice place, good music, and quality service is really worth the price.

This just in! After almost a month of renovation of the Dipolog’s Pagsalabuk Circle, finally it’s now back and running. Accidentally, when a photographer took this photo a firework came thundering in from a party a block behind. The first time I saw this photo, I thougth it’s just a celebration for the re-launching of the circle back from renovation. But it’s not… It’s undirected, unedited, raw photo from a 350d canon dslr (50mm) – A shot that is so hard to frame!

Organized by spouses Mr. Gregorio P. Alano and Mrs. Bienvenida T. Alano, Rural Bank of Katipunan (ZN), Inc. which is presently at its new name Katipunan Bank (Zamboanga Del Norte), Inc. “a rural bank”, is the first rural bank in the Municipality of Katipunan, Zamboanga Del Norte where it is basically named after. It was duly authorized by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to operate on January 24, 1979 and officially opened for business on January 29, 1979.

It has four original staff, namely, Atty. David PB. Dulanas (deceased) as manager, Jose C. Bascao (deceased) as cashier, Leticia G. Loquinario as bookkeeper and Abito A. Cacho as the Appraiser. While on the first two years, seven Board of Directors were organized and chaired by Mrs. Bienvenida T. Alano, with members Rev. Fr. Esteban Gaudicos, Atty. Vivencio Carpio, Dra. Ma. Rosalina Pacificar, Agapito Suelto, Gloria Kwan, Elpidia Gurdiel and Ms. Catalina G. Eguia as the Corporate Secretary.

The bank started with Authorized Capital Stock of One Million Pesos (P 1,000,000) and with a Subscribed Capital Stock and Paid-up Capital of Two Hundred Forty Three thousand Pesos (P 243,000) and One Hundred Forty Thousand Pesos (P 140,000), respectively. In 1983 during Aquino’s assassination, financial crises arouse, affecting most banks in the Philippines which came to worst in the year 1986 upon the occurrence of the People’s Power Revolution. This has consequently led to the tremendous ordeal of some banks that attributed to bankruptcy and receivership. However, despite the tumult of economic, political, social and financial crises Katipunan Bank survived.

With its remarkable performance in the aspect of financial condition, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas approved its application to establish a branch in Dipolog City, the Capital of Zamboanga Del Norte. This first branch operated in the year 1988 and it was in this same year that the bank is acquiesced by the aforementioned Regulatory Body to accommodate Checking Account services. After three years, another success was realized upon its purchase and acquisition of Plaza Rural Bank, Inc. in Carcar in the year 2001. Concurrent to this event was launched a first Station situated in Ramos, Cebu for which this station provides the DepEd Loan product which caters individual loans for DepEd teachers.

There forward, the launching of the Loan Collection and Disbursement Point (LCDP) for Microfinance followed in the year 2003, which later adapted as additional loan products, the Micro Access to Banking Services (MABS) and the grameen group lending approach. Currently, we are on the process of converting Grameen to the new ASA Approach.

After a few years in operation, the bank which was once only had four pioneer workers has now strengthen its workforce into two hundred ninety three employees as of this year 2008; and from seven original Board of Directors revamped an organizational set-up of five exemplary women, still with the twenty nine-year chairmanship of Mrs. Bienvenida T. Alano along with the members in the persons of Mrs. Lydia T. Zanoria as the Vice President, Mrs. Perseveranda G. Eguia, Mrs. Herlence A. Wong and the company’s first bookkeeper in the name of Madam Leticia G. Loquinario, presently, designated as the Chief Executive Officer of the bank.

Some twenty Just last January 29, 2009 we are proud to celebrate our 29th years in humble service to the community, synchronized to the inaugural celebration for our company acquired four-storey Katipunan Bank building at its new address in Quezon Avenue, Corner Aguilar St., Miputak, Dipolog City.

In 1985, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas recognized Katipunan Bank as one of the best managed bank in the Philippines; also awarded by the People’s Credit and Finance Corporation for being the rural bank having the lowest portfolio-at-least in the whole Region IX; and awarded by the LandBank of the Philippines as the Most Outstanding Rural Bank in the entire Region IX and for being their most effective and active partner in countryside credit delivery.

Truly, with dynamism and aggressiveness, Katipunan Bank (Zambo. Del Norte), Inc. has certainly come a long way since established and shall continue to pursue its role as the catalyst.

I doubt if Davao Medical center and PGH in Manila have MRI. Big big big private hospitals ra jud maka-afford ana. Ang brand new CT scan lang ky P20M na man siguro :):):)

Zambo Norte-based IIT alumni join simultaneous singing of national anthem

Dipolog City (4 September) -- Thirty-three alumni of the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) presently based in Zamboanga del Norte and the twin cities of Dipolog and Dapitan have joined the simultaneous singing of the Philippine National Anthem last Sept. 1.

Coming from the different batches and degrees, the alumni converged at the Provincial Capitol plaza to sing the national anthem simultaneously at 9:00 a.m. with MSU-IIT students, alumni and faculty in Iligan City, and other alumni chapters all over the country in an attempt to land in the Guinness Book of World Records (GBWR) under the category of "most number of people singing the national anthem simultaneously."

An alumna, who first saw and met the group, observed that the event had also become a sort of reunion among alumni in the province.

After singing the national anthem, the group was led to the provincial library by Dr. Gerardo Montilla Jr., a political science graduate and now serving as school principal of Sergio Osmeña National High School for some snacks courtesy of another alumnus, Ervie Acaylar, an education supervisor of the provincial schools division.

Provincial Librarian Erlinda Nunag, also an IIT alumna, graciously accommodated the group at her office.

While taking their snacks, they agreed to hold another alumni gathering this Christmas to promote the spirit of friendship and unity among themselves.

The simultaneous singing of the national anthem by MSU-IIT alumni, students and faculty was spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Iligan in cooperation with the Kataas-taasang Samahan ng mga Mag-aaral ng Bayan (KASAMA), the student government of IIT, Mindanao Youth Chain of Peace (MYC) and others.

Said activity was designed to build unity, peace and harmony among the tri-people of Mindanao: the Christians, Moslems and "lumads." (PIA-ZN)

Sisig is no doubt not for the calorie-conscious, don’t eat cholesterol people. But, it’s undeniably my favorite “pulutan” and the soulmate of my beer (hehe. chuckle). Said to have originated in Angeles City, Pampanga, this crunchy mixture of pig’s ears, snout, brain etc. Sisig is served in sizzling plate and topped with raw egg.

Perfect “pulutan” for a flyday…oops friday night-out with friends, hang-out and catch a good chat. Octave sport bar is the place where you can find what I call “One of the Best Sizzling Sisig in Zanorte” and sure it’s yummy. Writing about it now makes me hungry. I haven’t had my dinner yet, and was thinking eating sizzling sisig with a steaming rice.

Okay, I have mentioned about Octave Sports Bar and it’s yummy Sisig (pat the price of Php 99.00). I think it’s also worth mentioning that if you guys are into the billiards, you can rent a table at around Php 60.00 per hour. Perfect place if you’re looking for a less crowded spot.

'Discover Dapitan Photo Contest' offers P400-T in prizes

DAPITAN City, a fast developing tourism capital in Zamboanga Peninsula, has decided to allow people from all walks of life the chance to see its beauty and splendor through the camera lenses and later the photo results gathered from photographers who will be joining the "Discover Dapitan Photo Contest" slated from July 16 to September 15, 2009.

After the competitions, judges will decide who will bring home as much as P400,000 from the best photographs that contestants shoot from the different tourist spots of this tourism scenery-rich City of Dapitan.

So, what makes a photographer a winner? Technical quality, clarity and composition are all important, but so too is a flair for the unexpected and the ability to capture a picture-perfect moment in selected tourist spots.

This is because winning photo entries will be developed into postcards, posters and other materials the city will undertake to promote Dapitan as a tourist destination.

For the Major Category, photos must be taken from The Island Tour (Aliguay & Selinog Islands) and Dapitan Aqua-marine Park also known as Dampa and the River Cruise.

For the Minor Category, photos must be taken from Dakak Park Beach Resort & Casino, Rizal Shrine and Historical Trail, Gloria de Dapitan & Fantasyland, and Eco-Tourism Adventure Sports & Water Adventure.

Aliguay Island is part of Dapitan City. It is one of its barangays and is about one to two hours boat ride, depending on the weather. The island is under the custody of the Philippine Navy, declaring it as a marine sanctuary. The water surrounding it has lush coral beds and excellent white sand beaches, excellent for snorkeling.

Selinog Island is a protected landscape and seascape -- a marine protected area in the Philippines. It can be reached by traveling two hours by boat off the coast of Dapitan City. Some visitors consider it the best beach they have seen so far with its pristine and crystal-clear water.

Dampa is a newly operated park that offers aquamarine products through various cottage-like restaurants and videoke bars. It is at its best at nighttime when beautiful lights engulf the park-by-the-pond. It is located right immediately after the main bridge entering Dapitan City. Fresh fish can be fished out of the fishpond where the park is located.

Dakak Park and Beach Resort is a world-class beach resort owned by former congressman Romeo Jalosjos and family. It is known for its beautifully shaped cove white sand beach. Dakak beach resort is also a diving mecca in Mindanao and a perfect vacation getaway for local and foreign tourists. Dakak visitors often described themselves in this beautiful tropical island strolling on a magnificent pristine crystal turquoise blue waters in a powdery white sand beach, with a landscape of a beautiful shaped island cove out to deeper blue waters, laying themselves in a hammock and looking at the sunset horizon under lush native trees and hear the waves that clash quietly against the shore. Dakak offers the kind of relaxing moment that almost every vacationer is looking for.

Dakak boast of 15 hectares of wooden land, a natural reservoir for native plants and animals, providing the ideal setting for a 750-meter private beach blanketed with powdery white sand. This beautiful beach resort is situated on the tip of Northern Zamboanga in Mindanao and is surrounded by mountains on its east side.

Entertainment and culinary treats abound as well. One can dine on freshly grilled seafood, sample exotic Filipino dishes, continental cuisine and feast on an array of fresh fruits. Be treated to a cultural show or a party the night away at Dakak Pirates Bar or Fusion Disco.

Rizal Shrine is considered a major historical landmark of the Philippines where hundreds of visitors come and see for themselves how the country's national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, lived in exile in this 16-hectare sanctuary. Rizal acquired the property during his exile and built several structures, like the Casa Cuadrada, Casa Redonda, Casa Redonda Pequena, Casitas Hospitales, Aquaduct, Mi Retiro Rock, Amphitheater and the Rizalina.

Aside from being historic, Dapitan is also known as one of the country's tourist's destinations that fulfilled the dreams of its forefathers whose struggles and endeavors had resulted marvelously. Because of this landmark, Dapitan is included in almost every itinerary of tourists who will be visiting some areas of Mindanao.

A plan to restore and promote Rizal's historical trail and legacies in Dapitan included the construction of "Punto de Desembarco de Rizal en Dapitan Landmark or Rizal's Landing Site and Sta. Cruz Marker.

Rizal landed on the beach of Sta. Cruz, Dapitan, at 7 p.m. on July 17, 1892, to begin the life of an exile in Dapitan. It came to be known as Rizal's Landing Site later. With the help of the townsfolk, Rizal rebuilt the town's Plaza, In front of St. James Church. They also made the "Relief Map of Mindanao" out of stones, soil and grass. The Relief Map of Mindanao is located across the St. James Church with a total land area of 900 sq meters created by Dr. Rizal purposely as a motivating device for teaching history and geography to the townsfolk and further beautifying the city plaza.

Aside from the enchanting Dakak Park and Beach Resort and the historic Rizal Shrine, which are among country's favorite tourist destinations, Dapitan City can boast of a world-class commercial center. Gloria de Dapitan, which is situated at Sunset Boulevard, is a one-of-its-kind three-hectare commercial complex.

Right at the very heart of Gloria de Dapitan is Gallera de Dapitan, which architects Fernando Mirasol designed. It has a deluxe cockpit that may also be used for live entertainment shows, boxing matches and other crowd-drawing competitions. There is fully air-conditioned Exodus Bowling Center, which is the first of its kind in northwestern Mindanao, and could be at par with best bowling lanes in Metro Manila. It has eight lanes and setting the pins are computer-aided. Those who enjoy boxing, aerobics and belly dancing, there are state-of-the-art fitness equipment at Powerhouse Gym-the biggest gym is Zamboanga peninsula.

Its newest addition is the DapitanESS call center, the first call center to operate in the Zamboanga Peninsula.

Gloria's fantasyland in Dapitan City is the newest and only amusement park in the Visayas and Mindanao. Among the attractions of Gloria's fantasyland are kids' favorite rides that include choco-cup ride, bump car ride, the midi-flume ride, the carousel, the swinger, the Apollo, the mini-train, a giant roller coaster, horror house and the inter-active rides like Happy Journey, Fight Shark, World of War, Pirate Ship, Ferry's Wheel, Horror walk, go kart race circuit and Telecombat, among others. The multi-million amusement park is located inside Gloria de Dapitan.

The photography contest is open to all amateur and professional photographers who register with the Dapitan City Tourism Office during the prescribed registration period, which is from July 16 to September 15, 2009.

Official entry forms are available at the Dapitan City Tourism Office and City Information Division from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

A registration fee of P500 per participant is necessary plus an additional P500 per additional entry. Only up to three entries are allowed per category.

Like any other contest, rules are set by the organizers, and for the "Discover Dapitan Photo Contest," here are the contest rules: (1) Photos must be taken from the selected categories in the present time. Old photos of the places mentioned are not allowed to be submitted as entry; (2) Entries must be submitted with the duly accomplished registration form together with the digital file (.jpg) in cd-rom. Failure to submit the .jpg cd-rom form will disqualify the entry/s; (3) Any digital manipulation tool (e.g. cut & paste, healing, cloning, etc) that is not applicable or doable in the printing of analog media (film) will disqualify the entry. Although post production like exposure control (dodge & burn), color saturation (control), creative cropping, all are doable when printing from the negative, even color toning and conversion to black and white, as long as it is done across the negative and not on a portion of it or an area only is acceptable; (4) All entries shall become the property of the Dapitan City Government and cannot be used, reproduced, reprinted without the consent, the photographer, likewise cannot submit the same photos, or any variant of the photos to any other contest except on his personal file; (5) Winners will be published in the local news paper and announced over the radio; and (6) Judges decision is final and non-appealable.

Prizes for the Major Category are P100,000 plus plaque (First); P5,000 plus plaque (Second) and P2,000 plus plaque (Third).

For the Minor Category: P25,000 plus plaque (1st), P5,000 plus plaque (2nd), and P2,000 plus plaque (3rd).
