“It is only fair and practical that Visayas and Mindanao be represented in the country’s top leadership. In this case, if Sec. Teodoro, who is from Tarlac, becomes the party’s presidential bet then somebody from the South should be his running mate,” ayon sa source na isang congressman sa Luzon.

“The presidential team will be more credible if the president and vice president can address not only security problems but manage the economy efficiently as well. Sec. Teves, considering his wide experience in business having been appointed to various econo*mic positions in the country and adjudged as the Finance Minister of the Year for Asia, will prove to be a better economic manager. He is the man fit for the job,” diin pa rin ng source.

Pero malakas man ang kandidatura ni Teves para maging partner ni Teo*doro, naniniwala pa rin si Kampi Rep. Rodolfo Antonino ng Nueva Ecija na kailangang dumaan sa selection process si Teves.

whatever it takes, let's support them... especially Mr. Teves.. Isn't it great to have this kind of person who received an award in asia...

PCG watches for oil spill in Zambo Norte

The Philippine Coastguard is keeping close watch against possible oil spill off shore of Zamboanga del Norte province.

Zamboanga Coastguard Station Commander Abdulahid Utulam said they have deployed two ships at the Banga Point, Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte to monitor for possible oil spill.

The SuperFerry 9 of the Aboitiz Transport System capsized last September 6 at 9.5 nautical miles west of Banga Point, Siocon, while it was en route to Iloilo City coming from General Santos City.

The National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said nine people perished while 959 were rescued through the combined efforts of PCG, Philippine Navy, Philippine Air Force, two container ships as well as local fishermen.

Utulam said the two PCG vessels and crew will stay at Banga Point up to the 20th day or up to one month from the date of the incident to ensure there will be no oil spill.

Utulam said after the 20-day period there will be no more possibility of oil spill occurrence since the unused fuel, which is a bunker fuel, of the ill-fated SuperFerry 9 would solidify due to the cold water temperature.

The NDCC said the ill-fated vessel is believed to be also loaded with 180 tons of residual fuel oil, 45 tons of special fuel oil and 25 tons of lube oil.

Utulam said the PCG personnel would only be pulled out of Banga Point upon approval from the PCG headquarters in Manila with the evaluation and recommendation from the field personnel.

Aside from oil spill, he said the PCG personnel were also deployed at Banga Point to recover bodies, if there are still any, or possibly survivors who are among the passengers of the ill-fated SuperFerry 9.

The PCG vessels deployed at Banga Point are the BRP- Ilocos Norte and BRP-Corregidor, which are both search and rescue vessels and with oil spill equipment, Utulam said.

[Sana, huwag naman! :ohno:]

Dipolog lass bags regional pop quiz plume (http://www.goldstardailynews.com/content.php?sectionid=8&id=6133)
Updated September 18, 2009
DIPOLOG City -- A fourth year high school student of Punta National High School (PNHS) in this city has bested other contestants in the regional population quiz held here Tuesday morning.

Gerald May B. Banua has emerged as the new regional champion in this year’s regional population quiz, garnering 27 points from easy to average and difficult questions.

Banua, who will represent Region-9 in the national opulation quiz on October 14 in Baguio City, was followed by Lane B. Villaganas, a student of Zamboanga del Sur National High School (ZSNHS) of the Pagadian City division with 20 points.

A contestant from the Zamboanga del Norte division came third with 18 points.

Joselito Tizon, a teacher-coach who had already produced a number of regional and national winners in the past population quiz shows, was Banua’s coach.

Tizon himself was a pop quiz winner in his high school days.

The population quiz is a yearly activity spearheaded by the Commission on Population (PopCom) in coordination with the Department of Education (DepED), which aims to promote awareness among high school students on population issues and programs.

Zamboanga del Norte division hosted this year’s regional population quiz after its contestant had emerged as regional champion last year.

The board of judges was chaired by PopCom-9 regional head Susan B. Tejada with Dr. Hadja Jalila Sangkula of DepED-9 and Zamboanga del Norte assistant schools division superintendent Dr. Elsa R. Cruz as members. PIA-ZN

Magnificent in Dipolog, Zamboanga del Norte

http://www.whatrain.com/albm/philippines/images/iP11.jpg

The lyrics of Eraserhead’s “Waiting for a Bus” always comes back to me everytime I arrive in Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte, as I haggle with a motorcycle driver to take me to my regular hotel in Dipolog City. The ride sets me back around P130 to P150. That’s a short 10 minute motorcycle ride with me holding on to some random stranger with, strangely enough, Ely Buendia’s voice squealing in the back of my head. Yep, it’s habal-habal for me all the way from Dapitan Wharf to Dipolog City. My other option is actually to take the really slow bus going there but I would much rather take the dangerous and more expensive route going to Dipolog, and really, who wants to live forever?

This coming from a man whose motto in life is to “Live fast, die young, leave a good looking corpse.” The other variant is to “Live fast, die young, leave a trail of broken hearts.” And the other still less popular variant is “Live fast, die young, leave dirty underwear”

(And to think my motto in life used to be “Study hard, beautiful wife ahead.” Blah to that.)

I’m going to be doing a lot of travelling in the next few weeks. Tomorrow, I take the Fastcraft passing by Tagbilaran and Dumaguete until I reach the port of Dapitan, in the newly-created province of Zamboanga del Norte where the aforesaid motorcycle ride will take me all the way to Dipolog City to my hotel.

The week after, I will fly off to bonny Manila where I will scour the streets looking for Tondo’s Civil Registrar in order to correct some hapless civil servant’s incompetence when he/she mispelled the name of a client’s daughter in her Certificate of Live Birth. (I mean really, why do we need these things? To prove that we were successfully born? Like duh. I can just imagine some poor schmuck showing up at school and being refused enrollment all for the reason that, “Oh I’m sorry sir, you don’t have a birth certificate. How do we know that you were really born? For all I know, you could be just a hologram from the future transmitted through satellite rays by the Transformers.”)

Then the week after that, I will hie off to nearby Bohol where I will both (a) pay my client’s real estate taxes and (b) get some Bohol beach lovin’. Hooray for me!

But tomorrow, it’s to Dipolog that I go.

This will probably be my 5th or 6th trip to Dipolog City, courtesy of an ongoing case involving the contract of carriage between a family that missed passage on a certain boat trip, against the company that owns the boat, i.e., my client. I have very mixed feelings towards this trip. In the first place, the boat trip going to Dapitan can be a pain in the posterior, literally. We’re talking about a 6-hour boat ride from Cebu to Dapitan, with agonizingly slow stopovers in Tagbilaran and Dumaguete. My boat trip misfortunes include (a) sitting with a man who had the worst case of B.O. in the country and (b) choppy waters from Dumaguete to Dapitan. (Emptied my stomach, I did. At one point after a good strong puking, I had to ask myself, “Wait a minute! I don’t remember eating THAT!!”)

Compound that with the crappy in-house movies. Sometimes I get lucky and they show Jackie Chan films that I have never seen. And then sometimes, I get that really sordid B-movie about people getting locked out of a boat in the middle of the ocean and slowly drowning to their miserable deaths while swimming around a yacht that they don’t know how to get back on. Ah yes, it takes a sick genius to show that kind of movie while you’re riding a boat in choppy waters seated to a man with a bad case of stinkyarmpititis. Brilliant. Needless to say, the only thing entertaing in that 6-hour boat ride is counting how many old white farts are travelling with their mail-order Filipina brides and spending their hard earned dollars in the woman’s hometown province. Thank God for desperate old white men. Without them, we would be relying solely on Koreans for foreign currency.

Dipolog is beginning to be a nice place though. I used to hate it because the hotel I was staying at has crappy amenities and even crappier service, but ever since that same hotel opened up a second branch, I’ve been enjoying my trips there. I enjoy the solitude of being a stranger in a strange land. I enjoy walking about and enjoying the semi-rural ambiance of Dipolog City, reminding me of my hometown in Bantayan Island, and the old department stores in downtown Cebu.

In my last trip, I amused myself by looking for unusual purchases and came up with (1) A cheap-ass notebook that has some teen celebrity that I don’t recognize, looking so gosh-darn cute in an ambiguous sexual orientation kind of way; (2) a chinese tetra-pak milk thing that tasted quite yummy. I just don’t recognize the writings on the box, so I hope it doesn’t contain formalin…. or cat meat!; (3) the ugliest pair of shorts ever made on God’s earth, all for the price of P40!!! I swear, the store should have paid ME to get it out of their hands, it was THAT ugly! It was colored green with bright orange tiger stripes that wrapped around your butt and turned into flourescent pink flames towards the rear end. I felt so selfish for buying that pair of shorts, because it was made of so much synthetic fiber that I swear, if you melt it down to its component material, we would solve the Earth’s energy crisis for the next 30 years. And just as I was about to wear it at our hotel’s pool, I noticed the tag attached to the crotch portion of the shorts: “Government Warning: Wearing this pair of shorts has been known to cause random bouts of incurable blindness in the vicinity. Wearer is advised to proceed with caution and with due regard for the sanity of his fellow Filipinos.” I looked out the pool and all I saw nearby were Koreans and dirty old white men, so I went ahead swimming. I’m sorry, Philippine tourism economy! The Dipolog police is still investigating what happened that fateful April night.

One thing you can be sure of though, Dipolog City is on its way up, as within its very own ranks I discovered two indicators of progress. One is the numerous Kimberly-Clarke table napkin/toothpick dispensers on top of the table, looking so spiffy in in their Kimberly-Clarke goodness. The other is the fact of not one, but TWO!!! Yes, folks, you heard me right… Dipolog City has TWO Sunburst Fried Chicken restaurants, and both of them are found at the hotel where I reside. As every bona fide native of the Visayas and Mindanao knows, Sunburst Fried Chicken is the mark of progress. When one town has its very own Sunburst Fried Chicken, prosperity in the local economy could not be far behind. (Cebu City should know… it has, as of last count, not one, not two, but FIVE! FIVE Sunburst Fried Chicken branches, serving crispy fried chicken goodness to the entrepreneurial populace!)

But the truth of the matter is, I’m getting a bit sick of Sunburst Fried Chicken in Dipolog because it’s the only place I eat in when I’m there. I’d like to try out their other restaurants but all I see nearby are carinderias and the ocassional Jollibee and Greenwich Pizza, which I detest even more than Sunburst Fried Chicken. Since I only know 2 people in Dipolog, namely Popoy Mah and Paul Legorio, who are, unfortunately, both living in Cebu, I guess I’m limited to eating at Sunburst until I can find a better place to dine. And although I really do eat in carinderias, I only do so when I am in Cebu, where my dad, who is a doctor, is easily accessible in case I get stomach cramps or worse. Would rather not risk getting hospitalized in a strange town where I don’t know anyone, wouldn’t you think?

Well, this blog is getting quite long so let me close it by saying that Dipolog will always be noteworthy to me for its glut of motorcycles and tricycles. P6 for trips within the city, and a haggle-stress price of P130 to P150 for trips to Dapitan Wharf. But the habal-habal charm has grown on me. Where else can I truly feel like a travelling cowboy lawyer than when having the wind blast through my face, whipping my hair and barong about as I ride behind the back of a speeding motorcycle driver through the empty streets of Dapitan with nothing but beautiful rural foliage and smiling children waving past by as I return back home to Cebu….

May mga Korean tourists na din pala sa Dipolog. :)

Provincial officials vacates posts

DIPOLOG —— For one week starting September 7, all provincial officials led by the provincial governor down to the chiefs of offices will be relieved of their official functions (literally) as 43 select students will take over from the reigns of government.

This developed as Zamboanga del Norte Governor Rolando E. Yebes officially proclaimed Executive Order No.09-25 declaring September 7-11 2009 as Rotary Youth Activities Week, paving the way for the take over of the 43 selected students to the various positions in the provincial government.

Rotary of Dipolog President Edna Capili-Chan told reporters “these select youths will function in their designated posts for one week which will give them hands on training in governance.”

The students will be lead by Renee Frances Dublin of Zamboanga del Norte National High School who will function as governor and Jani G. Omamalin as vice governor respectively.

Thirteen other students from various schools in the city will also take over as legislative board members of the province led by Jervina E. Gainsan, Speaker Pro Tempore; Ma. Anna Alexandra Liong, Majority Floor Leader; Czeska Johann G. Co, Minority Leader and SP Members Marcy Dale Regencia, Grant Marqui Roil Yu Cainta, Charry Badiango, Jie Mawile, Rascim Doysabas, Marriethen Grace Abasolo, Mercy Joy Galera, Anjelo Silva, Rey ventozillada, Marie France Montaño and Romeo F. Aside from the 15 students who will take over in the executive and legislative branches of government, 27 others students will also takeover as chiefs of offices in the various provincial government offices from September 7-11, 2009.

The Rotary Youth provincial officials can counter sign official public documents, Chan said, adding “it will give meaning in their participation in the program.”

The Rotary Youth Week Activities has been instituted in the province for 29 years now, Ms. Chan said.

Zambo. Norte-based IIT alumni join simultaneous singing of national anthem

Thirty three alumni of the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) presently based in Zamboanga del Norte and the twin cities of Dipolog and Dapitan have joined the simultaneous singing of the Philippine National Anthem last Sept. 1.

Coming from the different batches and degrees, the alumni converged at the Provincial Capitol plaza to sing the national anthem simultaneously at 9:00 a.m. with MSU-IIT students, alumni and faculty in Iligan City, and other alumni chapters all over the country in an attempt to land in the Guinness Book of World Records (GBWR) under the category of “most number of people singing the national anthem simultaneously.”

An alumna, who first saw and met the group, observed that the event had also become a sort of reunion among alumni in the province.

Zamboanga del Norte-based MSU-IIT alumni participate in the simultaneous singing of the national anthem to beat Israel, the current record holder in the Guinness Book.

After singing the national anthem, the group was led to the provincial library by Dr. Gerardo Montilla Jr., a political science graduate and now serving as school principal of Sergio Osmeña National High School for some snacks courtesy of another alumnus, Ervie Acaylar, an education supervisor of the provincial schools division.

Provincial Librarian Erlinda Nunag, also an IIT alumna, graciously accommodated the group at her office.

While taking their snacks, they agreed to hold another alumni gathering this Christmas to promote the spirit of friendship and unity among themselves.

In a related development, a total of 5,326 students, alumni and faculty have participated in the simultaneous singing of the national anthem in Iligan City on Tuesday. With the participation of other alumni chapters nationwide, MSU-IIT is certain to beat the current world holder, Israel, with only 264 singing the national anthem last year.

The simultaneous singing of the national anthem by MSU-IIT alumni, students and faculty was spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Iligan in cooperation with the Kataas-taasang Samahan ng mga Mag-aaral ng Bayan (KASAMA), the student government of IIT, Mindanao Youth Chain of Peace (MYC) and others.

Said activity was designed to build unity, peace and harmony among the tri-people of Mindanao: the Christians, Moslems and “lumads.” (PIA-ZN)

Tonzi, its because of stiff competition brought by Super 5. Since Super 5 new buses are competitive as much as RTMI's King Long and Super 5 has this attitude to initiate low fare in this market, RTMI has to respond by lowering down their fares in able to be viable for this route. This low fares from CDO-ILG and vice versa had started when Super 5 introduced their new AC buses but prior to it RTMI lead the way in business class travel worth P100+.

Oo nga. This is the beauty of open competition kasi consumers ang makaka-benefit. However, yung mga jeepney drivers plying the route ay patuloy na nagrereklamo kasi apektado daw sila. Kaya dati nireklamo nila ito sa LTFRB na naging resulta sa pagtigil ng pagbaba ng fares nila.

Over 100 SMEs benefit from DoST fund assistance program

DIPOLOG CITY, ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE — Over 100 small- and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) in Zamboanga Peninsula have received assistance from the Science and Technology department’s Small Enterprises Technology Upgrading Program (SET-UP) in the last eight years.

Brenda L. Nazareth-Manzano, regional director of the Science and Technology department, said more than P3 million worth of technology-based solutions were provided to local SMEs, which will basically enhance their operational efficiency and boost productivity and competitiveness. She said her office is eyeing more than P6 million worth of projects for SMEs in Zamboanga Peninsula this year.

Roughly more than half of those given assistance are into aquamarine and processed food products. Ms. Manzano’s announcement came after the regional visit of Department of Science and Technology (DoST) Secretary Estrella F. Alabastro here on Thursday.

She said a total of 350 firms were able to get training on new technologies and good manufacturing practices. Jennifer L. Alcazar, DoST’s center manager for technology transfer center, said they have assisted more than 100 SMEs so far under SET-UP since 2001.

Ms. Alabastro said they hope to receive more community-based project proposals that would result in higher impact on beneficiaries and not just assistance that will benefit small firms. She said the department has allocated P300 million for SET-UP but only half of it was released for this year.

Among the successful SET-UP projects in Zamboanga Peninsula is Baron Bakeshop, which is into nutri-enriching its production of squash loaf bread and pan de sal. Other major beneficiaries are bottled sardines manufacturers in this city.

SET-UP is DoST’s response to the call of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for a more focused assistance program for micro, small and medium enterprises. It is a nationwide strategy to encourage and assist micro, small and medium-scale enterprises (MSMEs) to adopt technology-based solutions to enhance operational efficiency and boost productivity and competitiveness, officials said.

Priority beneficiaries initially covered by the program are small enterprises in such sub-sectors as furniture, food processing, gifts, toys and houseware, marine and aquatic resources, horticulture, metals and engineering. — Darwin T. Wee

Come and Discover ZaNorte

Christmas comes early in Cebu Pacific
Travel this Nov-Dec for only P888

The Philippines’ leading domestic carrier, Cebu Pacific (CEB), brings Christmas early to Filipinos with an P888 ‘Go Lite’ seat sale to any domestic destination from September 26-30, 2009. Those with check-in luggage will just add P100 upon booking.

Travel period is from November 1- December 31, 2009.

The seat sale covers all CEB domestic destinations, including sought-after tourist spots such as Kalibo (Boracay), Busuanga and Puerto Princesa (Palawan) and Siargao.

CEB also flies to Cauayan, Calbayog and Catarman, and from Cebu to Legazpi, Dipolog (Dapitan), General Santos, Roxas and Cotabato.

“Increased local travel can definitely benefit the tourism and economy of the 32 domestic destinations CEB flies to. Companies can have out-of-town Christmas parties; friends and families can go on leisure travel before the Christmas rush. We hope our passengers can explore the possibilities for travel this November and December,” said CEB VP for Marketing and Distribution Candice Iyog.

“This seat sale can also be booked online and paid via our payment centers. This new option in our website is specifically for those who have no credit cards or prefer to pay in cash,” she added.

Passengers can book their flights via www.cebupacificair.com or reservations hotlines (02) 7020-888 or (032) 230-8888, and pay through CEB ticketing offices, online, or via ATM or over the counter in partner banks.

Partner banks include Robinsons Savings Bank, Banco de Oro and Metrobank (for over the counter payments), and Bancnet and Megalink members (for ATM payments).
Gokongwei-owned airline, CEB, has flown over 36 million passengers since its inception in 1996. It flies passengers to its extensive network both here and abroad from Manila, Clark, Cebu and Davao, using the youngest fleet of aircraft in the Philippines.

Book now and fly to Dipolog for only PHP1,043.84 from Cebu hub and PHP1,027.04 from Manila hub and experience the following:

Selinog and Aliguay Islands "Boracay of Mindanao"

With its pristine, clear waters, white sand beaches, wide range species of marine life surely these islands will be the next diving and swimming mecca in Mindanao. A 2 hour boat ride from the coast of Dapitan.

When they found out matutuloy na ang construction ng new bus terminal, happy ang mga officials ng RTMI, kasi sa ngayon, the terminal are theirs, but the land are just leased. We should pray to God through His Son the Lord Jesus Christ as this pleases Him. GOD is actually the name of the Creator while god in small letters is referring to idols. I hope you didn't take my words offensive. :-)

Mas magiging accessible na ang Zamboanga City pag matapos ang Zamboanga West Coastal Road dahil madadaanan na ito ng RTMI. Hopefully maasphalt overlay na lahat ng provincial road sa region para maganda ung pagtravel. May nabasa nga ako comment ng isang tourist from Cebu going to DPL-OZC-ILG-CDO.

We should pray to God through His Son the Lord Jesus Christ as this pleases Him. GOD is actually the name of the Creator while god in small letters is referring to idols. I hope you didn't take my words offensive. :-)

With your 2nd Q, yes there is, it's Ceres Lines, but I have no idea if it's still plying to Zamboanga. It's route is from Manila-Zamboanga.

Anyways,

I'd like to see a more boomed & one ZamPen in the coming years.

Gov. Rolando E. Yebes proudly received the check from DOH RD Tan worth P 20 million pesos.

DOH doles out P 20M check for CT scan acquisition in ZN Med Center

The long wait is finally over as provincial governor Rolando E. Yebes recently received the check worth 20M pesos for ZaNorte Medical Center to purchase a CT Scan.

The check is the realization of the pledge made by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for the medical center when her Excellency visited the province during the hospital’s inauguration just this year.

At exactly 3 p.m., Yebes wholeheartedly received the check personally handed over by Department of Health Regional Director Dr. Aristides Tan inside the hospital’s conference room, witnessed by resident doctors, provincial officials and hospital’s staff.

RD Tan, however, clarified that the check also serves as a concrete proof of DOH’s assistance to various provincial governments in the region to acquire state of the art and modern hospital facility as a directive continuously trailed under the leadership of DOH Sec. Duque.

he upgrading of various government hospitals is a scheme formulated by the said agency to help underprivileged patients to receive similar quality medical examinations just like that of other expensive private medical centers in the country.

Even though the said amount could not suffice to purchase the latest CT scan model,

Yebes stated that it is already a huge aid for the province.

He prided the admiration showed by PGMA to the hospital because it can now be paralleled to other modern hospitals in the country.

The governor is positive that with the aid received from DOH, the ZaNorte Medical Center will soon be one of the government hospitals in the region with a CT scan.

New Kia dealership opens at North Fairview
(The Philippine Star) Updated May 06, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Kia North Fairview in Quezon City opened its doors recently, joining five other dealerships servicing this bustling capital city of the Philippines.

The Kia dealership in Fairview is being operated by Green Valley Auto Sales Corp., which has been appointed by Columbian Autocar Corporation (CAC), authorized distributor of Kia in the Philippines, to provide complete sales, spare parts and servicing functions to its wide customer base northeast of Metro Manila. This is part of CAC’s aggressive marketing move to open more Kia dealerships and outlets in the country’s major urban centers.

The opening of the Kia Fairview dealership highlights the concept of Kia convenience – that of bringing Kia closer to home, right near where people live, work, play or shop.

“Kia needs to be brought closer to our customers,” says Mabilog. “We want them to enjoy the kind of service, both before and after-sales, that has distinguished Kia dealership around the world, and we want to experience this now,” he adds.

The trajectory is aimed at tapping the huge market potential in the country’s premiere city northeast of Manila. Mabilog believes that customers are ready for Kia and that the only problem preventing them from making that decision is that too often, Kia is far from where people live, work, play or shop.

“The Kia dealership in Fairview is the answer. We bring the Kia convenience right in your neighborhood,” Mabilog says.

The dealership has Kia’s three S’s – sales, spare parts and service. Customers may come in to inspect the vehicles themselves or browse at car catalogues available at the showroom. Already, such new dealerships have opened in Dipolog, Bohol, Pagadian, Butuan and Zamboanga City, to name only a few of these new Kia showcases, with very encouraging results.

“Customers are confident of a car brand that also promises prompt after sales service,” says Apollo Rosal, CAC’s national service manager. “Our authorized dealers with three S’s (sales, service spare parts) have adequate supply of Kia genuine parts and are variously equipped to handle any mechanical trouble should customers from our boutique showrooms need any. They also do preventive maintenance work and fulfill warranty requirements,” Rosal adds.

“The key to enjoying the trust of potential customers is to make a commitment towards honest, prompt and efficient before and after sales service,” says Mabilog. “We are doing that now and we intend to deliver them constantly and consistently,” he adds.
