Good news for KZN commuters

November 26 2008 at 07:21AM

By Sinegugu Ndlovu

Millions of rands are set to be spent by Metrorail in KwaZulu-Natal as the company prepares to transport sports fans set to visit the province during the 2010 soccer World Cup.

This emerged on Tuesday as the media were taken on an inspection of several stations that have been spruced up.

KZN Metrorail acting business development manager Danny Hattingh said the construction of a railway station at Moses Mabhida Stadium, which would be the company's flagship, would begin in February and be completed in September 2009.

An amount of R140-million has been budgeted towards building of the new station.

"Getting to major sporting events in Durban should become easier with the building of the railway station near the stadium.

"After the World Cup, the station will serve commuters who are likely to take advantage of the station's central position," said Hattingh.

He said R130-million had been allocated for station upgrades.

Thembalihle, Greenwood Park, Briardene, Dalbridge, Congella, Montclair Lindokuhle and Umlazi stations have been given facelifts, which include the improvement of facilities such as toilets, benches and signage.

Refurbishment was also in progress at Berea, Umngeni, Umbilo, Redhill, Malvern and Merebank stations.

"Eighteen refurbished train sets are already in service and we are on target for 27 sets in 2010. The first phase of an integrated communications system costing R25-million will be installed at five stations, including Rossburgh and Duffs Road.

"These include passenger communications equipment and emergency panic buttons," said Hattingh.

He said local soccer games were being used to test Metrorail's readiness for 2010.

Police Superintendent Harris Jali said 136 police officers would serve at railway police stations, which would also act as satellite police stations.

"Personnel will be static and roaming. The strategic points would also serve the communities near the railway stations," he said.

it is very striking, but completely different to the glass renders i had previously seen. The natural elements the wood brings in are nice. I particularly like the simple form of the first picture. the concrete, glass and wood with sharp angles works very well imo. i would have prefered a bit more shade/cover over the actual trackside area

Guys.. thanks for the pic of the station looks grea but a few questions i have:

1) Are they going to use real wood? If so wont it weather extremely badly and need constant matanence? Durban climate eats up everything so i dont know how good an idea this is.

2) Will it be ready for 2010? If they start next year, it will give them just over a year to complete it which may be possible but that doesnt give much room for say strikes, bad weather etc.

What you guys think? Otherwise its looks awsome! thanks.

@Pule, na mate dont think there is a rail link. Whats the closes station to Umhlanga?

Not sure on the wood yet, but i am sure they have thought this through.

Construction is planned to take 9 months, starting in Feb.

Very nice design, I like it alot. I see many are questioning whether or not the facade will be real wood, I very much doubt it, with the constant maintenance required. It will probably be a precast plinth with a colour scheme similar to that of wood.

Also agree with Mike, would have liked to see more coverings over the platforms.

Design is soo small, it can be completed in 6 months if G5 use the same pace as they used in the stadium, & prob 3 months if they go at the same speed they building KSIA.

Its a piddly project with the main thing being the main slab.

Arup are probably the one of the biggest engineering firms in the world, their architecture department are also making a name for themselves.

The new airport (KSIA) is an Osmond Lange design.

does anyone have more info on the retail mall that will connect this to the Durban central station?

romanSA
December 2nd, 2008, 09:41 PM
There surely cannot be a mall that will connect this station to the central station. They are too far apart. This will mean that the mall will stretch at least 2 kms, including under Argyle Road! I think the retail presence at the Kings Park station will be self-contained and will stretch no more than the length of People's Park, if at all.

DB, will you be able to do a similar shot for new station in relation to the main station on NMR / MY avenue? As far as I know, the next station thereafter going south is the de-facto (in terms of pax) main station at Berea Rd / Warwick Ave. These four stations (Umgeni / Goble Rd, Kings Park, NMR, and Berea Rd / Warwick) currently / will service the downtown and it would be great to get an overall pic of where they are in relation to each other. I think the next one south after the Warwick station is on Umbilo Road, near medical school while the one preceding the Goble Rd / Umgeni Rd station going north is on North Coast Rd.

I wonder where exactly a future King Shaka airport link will join this network, and what route it will take? Methinks it will likely have to join somewhere on the extreme bottom right of the grid, somewhere between Mount Edgecombe and Canelands. Fastest route to city centre will be via Temple / Kenville split, skipping most / all of the little stops.

That is 7200m2 in the retail section under the stadium.

If you read the posted article it speaks of a ribbon retail development between the new station and Durban central station

I'd say it should stay (it is getting an upgrade at present). 1-2km is a long walk as both will be targetting two separate groups of people. Also it is existing infrastructure, why get rid of it?

I think you are correct. But it would be possible for it to offload at the Kings park station en route to the central station.

From previous plans i saw, the long term feasibility plan was for the new kings park station to incorporate a trans modal facility for the airport, with people arriving there, connecting onto the people mover system to the beach hotels/icc and the like. This would bypass the heavy commuter environment at Durban central station.

Good plan to me :)

According to an article in Monday's Daily News, construction of the station has commenced and will be finished by March next year.

romanSA
May 24th, 2009, 06:32 PM
The only possible reason why FIFA may not want to use a station close to the stadium is because of security concerns. However, It doesn't make sense why the city is rushing this if it's not needed for 2010. They could have mothballed it for post-2010. It's not as if this precinct already doesn't have enough construction on the go, without unnecessary major construction adding to the chaos.

Mo Rush
May 24th, 2009, 06:37 PM
I said FIFA usually close the closest station, not always.
It may only be in cases where the station is "on top" of the stadium. Ellis Park station will be closed and in some cases in Germany some stations were closed.

that area opposite the pool is being used as the storage site for MM, since the area they were occupied is now being preped for Hero's Walk and the park, so all the containers. Concrete stacks, etc... are being housed there. hence you will see the temp steel bridge going across for the workers.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. That's also a prime site and it will be interesting to see what the city has planned for it in the long run. If we ever bid for a major games, that tract of land would make a perfect Athletics villages, although the traffic noise from being flanked by 2 major roads may drive some mad! Which train stations are closer to hotels, B&Bs and other accomodation?

romanSA
November 13th, 2009, 03:11 PM
The central station is probably closest to most of the hotels on the Golden Mile and Morningside, although the distance between the Kings Park station and Central station is a short distance (not more than 1.5km by my estimation). The Kings Park station will be closer to Suncoast and Blue Waters Hotel (both virtually within walking distance), some hotels in Morningside, and the hotels in Durban North (and Umhlanga).

As it is at the moment, one half of Water Gilbert is Paved for pedestrians and the other half is tarred for free vehicle access. It all looks permanent and very neat.

It looks dam nice! and the big black street lights looked like they would be very bright. They were busy doing something to the concrete next to the walk way from the stadium, it looked like they were busy polishing it to maybe look like it is on the stadium concourse.

Edit: On the Walter Gilbert Road side they aren't fully done with some paving to still do but its just a few bricks here and there and a little clean up. The station is also looking good.

Stadium station promises thrilling ride
Barbara Cole
March 17 2010 at 01:20PM

The R140 million, state-of-the-art station, the most modern in the province, will offer them "the wow effect", the proud project manager, Anita Govender, said yesterday.

"It is very exciting and the look and feel is very different," said Govender, who works for a railway engineering consulting company.

The ticket office has been designed in such a way that a passenger in a wheelchair can interact with the ticket seller.

"Prasa, the Passenger Rail Association of South Africa, which owns the infrastructure, is very sensitive to people with special needs," Govender said.

The features include new generation speed gates - modern turnstiles for access control and ticket collection - an integrated communications system involving a public address system and electrical display boards, lifts and a hi-tech security system.

And passengers will be able to go out of the platform, straight on to the concourse, and from there to the stadium.

Work started on the flagship facility, which will have two platforms, in June, and is expected to be finished on April 16.

While Durban station will take soccer supporters to the fan park at the beachfront, the new station will take fans right to the matches.

About 20 000 passengers are expected to use the new station at every match. Special services will be put on to get them to the stadium and then back home again. There are five railway lines at the new station and the infrastructure had to be reconfigured to accommodate the new platforms.

At the same time, the passenger and freight trains have had to continue operating during construction.

Moses Mabhida rail
commuter station
construction on track

9th April 2010

Engineering consultants Grinaker-LTA is building the R126-million Moses Mabhida rail commuter station,
situated 2 km north of the main Durban station, for newly established rail transport body Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa).

Construction of the Moses Mabhida rail commuter station is set for completion as part of the upgrade of the Moses Mabhida station precinct, in central Durban.

Grinaker-LTA will construct rail infrastructure changes, including trackworks, overhead track electrification and signalling. The company must also build the two platforms at the station, as well as the station deck and associated facilities, says Grinaker-LTA contracts director Steve Poorter.

Challenges include working in the busy
operational rail network area close to the main Durban station. Work is split into two phases to enable normal train services to
operate during construction.

Construction safety is also important in this milieu as workers and supervisors must contend with high-voltage overhead power lines and trains passing at normal operating speeds, Poorter adds.

The project is expected to take ten months and is complex, partly because the site is
located in an old riverbed with a resulting high water table.
Restricted work areas and difficult site access compound the problems of ensur-
ing that all work is coordinated to reduce disruptions to rail services.

Piling work at one of the two platforms at the station and construction of most of the concrete structure have been completed.

Work started on the station, which will have two platforms, in June, and is
expected to be completed on April 16, he
concludes.

Train station opens at Moses Mabhida stadium

June 07 2010 at 11:22AM

Sports lovers will no longer have to walk more than a kilometre to get to the Moses Mabhida and Absa stadiums in Durban, thanks to a new train station opened on Monday.

The R140-million station at the Moses Mabhida stadium was officially opened by Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele and KwaZulu-Natal transport MEC Willies Mchunu.

The building of the station began in July last year and it would be used during the World Cup.

It would also be used by rugby supporters going to Absa stadium which is just a stone's throw away from the new Moses Mabhida stadium.

Previously soccer and rugby supporters used to jump off at Durban station and walk more than a kilometre to the stadiums.

Speaking during the official opening, eThekwini municipality mayor Obed Mlaba said it would be important to maintain all the infrastructure after the World Cup.

"I am very confident that the transport division will provide a window for opportunity beyond 2010," Mlaba said.

Ndebele was also expected to speak at the function. - Sapa

Two trains ran concurrently on both sides, shuttling people between the MM station and the main station, 1.2km down the road (which is closer to the Aussie's tent city at Kingsmeads and some of the beachfront hotels. Have some pics of this station and trains too. But need to figure out a way post it now that my photobucket account has been suspended because I exceeded my bandwidth. Sigh!

Thousands of people exited from trains in a scene that is a shock to the system.

Durban station was poorly marketed though. I did not see the branded trains.

All very easy. Chose to walk along beachfront to stadium. Its hard to imagine the beachfront without the extensive upgrades!

Here are some pics of the new MM station. In short, it’s great. Modern, clean, and super convenient. I took a train to the Durban main station from there, which has undergone a startling transformation. I was pleasantly surprised to see how many people used it. I waited until the mad rush was over before I took it so that I could take better pics of the interior. Speaking of which, the main train station’s interior must now rank it as one of the most aesthetically appealing train stations in the country. I would honestly rate it better than most main train stations I have visited in Europe and North America.
