A convention center^^^^
lordvader November 30th, 2008, 07:10 AM ^^
Nice! Thanks for the pics and info!
Pilotofthefuture November 30th, 2008, 11:31 AM Sweet! so 3 buildings in total! I heard it was just gonna be 2. Sigh... would've been perfect if it were in the middle of Colombo with all the other tall buildings... but still... it's all good. :D
It mentions something about the buildings being connected together by a sky lounge... so does that mean there gonna be a skybridge connecting the 2 taller towers together like the Petronas towers? Doesn't show it in any of the plans..
Amal November 30th, 2008, 01:25 PM I wants myself a super luxury apartment at the top :nocrook:
sjinadasa November 30th, 2008, 01:47 PM Looking at the site photos, its gonna be so weird when this complex comes up right infront of those houses.
phil.froelich November 30th, 2008, 03:35 PM A convention center[/SIZE]^^^^
I was referring to the commercial part of the 40 storey tower...I obviously know that there is going to be a convention centre on the site...
saraprobe November 30th, 2008, 04:24 PM I was referring to the commercial part of the 40 storey tower...I obviously know that there is going to be a convention centre on the site...
No idea, I heard that they are gonna dedicate 40story for gov purposes:nuts:
illusions77 December 2nd, 2008, 04:55 PM any idea as to how tall the towers are in feet / meters ?
BTW i would have also prefered if they would have move the location of these towers close to the rest of the towers, that way it makes the skyline more attractive. Nevertheless it's a good addition to the city.
jobszhang December 4th, 2008, 02:46 PM ^^ I like this project. Is there anybody can tell me what is the project's stage, proposed or under construction or other stage?when will be beginning and when will be finished? That is important to me.By the way ,is there anybody who from Sri Lanka?I want to make friends with him/her.
my e-mail:keke851218@163.com I am from Shanghai ,China.
Respecting your reply!
Gamarala December 4th, 2008, 06:57 PM Looking at the site photos, its gonna be so weird when this complex comes up right infront of those houses.
Don't we have zoning regulations in the suburbs preventing stuff like this from happening? Cos, it would really suck to live in those houses. It's pretty densely populated nearby.
Google maps of the location: http://maps.google.com/maps?t=h&hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=6.90422,79.913918&spn=0.005634,0.009656&z=17
On the bright side, looks like they're expanding the road near the site. I wonder who's going to pay for it :)
PCK December 4th, 2008, 07:36 PM i think once they build the tower, the area would naturally change with more commerical places coming up all, there is still some time to go till this is done! and welcome jobszhang to the sri lanka thread! yes all of us come from sri lanka, i and a few others currently live in sri lanka. The foundation ceremony was already held so i think construction will start soon as the completion of the project is by 2011 i think.

Gamarala December 24th, 2008, 12:22 PM Hasn't the court decided it wants Water's Edge to remain operational? I don't get it though, I thought the initial reason they wanted it closed down was the damage to the natural environment it caused.
SC orders UDA allow Waters Edge to continue under new management
by Chitra Weerarathne
The Supreme Court yesterday directed the Chairman of the Urban Development authority to allow the Waters Edge Banquet and Conference Facility be continued under a new Management Committee, chaired by Dr. P. Ramanujan.
The employees will continue to serve under this Management Committee.
Uditha Egalahewa appeared for the employees who had appealed to the Court stating that their employment was at risk, when the ownership of the hotel was transferred from Asia Pacific Golf Course Pvt. Limited to the UDA, by a Supreme Court Judgement. The judgement faulted the retired president, Mrs. Kumaratunga, for misdirecting the Cabinet and alienating 224 acres of State land to the custody of Asia Pacific Golf Course Private Limited.
The former President was ordered to pay Rs. three million as compensation to the State for abuse of power and breach of public trust.
The Supreme Court Bench yesterday comprised, Justice, J. A. N. de Silva, Justice Shirani Tilakawardene and Justice Saleem Marsoof.
The Members of the Waters Edge Management Committee are, Dr. P. Ramanujan, (Chairman) Prema Cooray (Chairman, Convention Centre), Hiran Cooray, (Head of Jetwing), Mrs. Kimali Fernando (Chief Executive Officer of Pan Asia Bank), Mr. Gardiner (Managing Director of Galle Face Hotel), Mr. Ismeth Raheem (Architect) and Sudath Karunanayake, Attorney-at-law.

phil.froelich December 25th, 2008, 11:38 AM Interesting so atleast some part of the complex will be preserved...

jimpappa November 8th, 2010, 04:25 PM I saw some construction (probably piling) in the project site when I passed battaramulla last week. So lets keep our fingers crossed and hope it's not another celestial or a dawson grand
pathum1986 November 9th, 2010, 07:12 AM good to hear some progress
Shakeel December 17th, 2010, 03:31 PM Are you for real this Indian project is getting into action or just another Ocean View. What about the project, Diamond Towers or something in front of St Joseph College.
dayt0na December 20th, 2010, 06:34 AM So is this building under Construction or On hold?...Wikipedia says under construction and the Google maps look pretty out-dated.
If the Constructors manage to pull it off, this building would do a great deal in transforming the surrounding areas in the vicinity and need not mention the view would be nothing short of spectacular especially with the diyawanna oya and waters edge golf course in the back drop.
dayt0na December 31st, 2010, 05:40 PM Passed the site today, looks like construction work is finally under-way.:)
Shakeel January 1st, 2011, 03:09 PM Thanks for the update. Is it possible to take some snaps.

The piling work you guys have seen is at the adjoining site, which is the new Attorney General's office.
Sohan G August 12th, 2012, 05:51 PM Guys (and gals) I have some exciting although unconfirmed (rather unconfirmable) news. I went to Water's Edge on Friday and I could see plenty of cranes and people working right across on the Suchirneb site, next to the new Auditor General's building there. And I could clearly see a hoarding on the site with the initial proposed building design we saw when they launched the project. (the two towers with one having the soaring pointy bits) Does anyone know what is happening there though? Are those old hoardings and they are building something else altogether or are they actually building the initially stalled Suchirneb project as planned? (and if the second is true, what will happen with regards to the proposed MRT, which was connected to this project) Questions, questions, with no one to answer them! (and with nothing new on the www.Suchirneb.lk website either)

can you just go and ask one of the workers if possible?? That would be the best way!! :)

Secretary Defence and Urban Development Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa graced the occasion of the foundation stone laying ceremony for the Secretariat of Personal Identification at Battaramulla today (5th July).
Hon. Speaker of the Parliament, Chamal Rajapaksa, upon the invitation of Secretary Defence laid the foundation stone at the auspicious moment.
The new building constructed on the direction of His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa as a part of the ‘Mahinda Chintanaya’ programme. The 20 storied office complex will house the Department of Immigration and Emigration and the Department of Registration of Persons. The 700,000 sq feet building complex will include state of the art security system, automatic building management system, public address facility, internal CCTV, and cutting edge fire fighting and control system.
Once completed the Department of Immigration and Emigration and the Department of Registration of Persons will be allocated seven and five floors respectively. The remaining floors will be occupied by the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development.
The Rupees 7.5 billion project will include many modern amenities such as a four storied car park, a post office, banks, cafeterias and toilets for the benefit of the public. Much care was taken to cater to the needs of people with special needs during the planning stages. Work on the construction is expected to be completed within three years.
The main aim of the project is to provide the public with an efficient service in the shortest possible time. The general public would be able to obtain passports and national identity cards without hassle under one roof.
A large number of distinguished guests including Chairman, Urban Development Authority Nimal Perera, Additional Secretary Ministry Of Defence S. Hettiarachchi Military Liaisons Officer of the Ministry of Defence Major General (Rtd) Palitha Fernando, Additional Secretary (Technical) Rohan Senevirathna, Controller General of Immigration and Emigration CB Chulananda Perera, Commissioner General of Registration of Persons Jagath Wijeweera, Harsha De Silva of International Construction Consortium (Pvt) Ltd and Suranjith De Silva of Design Group Five International (Pvt) Ltd were present at the occasion.

Sohan G August 19th, 2012, 05:21 AM Saraprobe, I went through the videos and pics of the Department of Immigration and Emigration, and judging by its position relative to the old and new Sethsiripaya buildings in those videos and photos, it seems rather unlikely that this is the building being built on the piece of land which was planned to be used for Suchirneb project. (the perspectives in those vids and photos do not tally with the perspectives this building would have had if it is placed on that piece of land) However I could be wrong about this. Unfortunately I have no events to attend at Water's edge in the foreseeable future, and it is completely out of the way for me to just go there to see the site!
raji j August 19th, 2012, 06:16 AM sohan G, the cranes and site activities you saw were not belong to the Suchirneb site. that is new building for the Department of Census and Statistics right side to the Suchirneb site and in front of the new attorney general building. but no ground work in Suchirneb site yet.
here isa link http://www.statistics.gov.lk/STATCAP/Constriction%20of%20head%20office%20building%20for%20the%20DCS.pdf .
Sohan G August 21st, 2012, 03:08 PM Thanks Raji J for the info. I saw the old hoarding with the rendering of the Suchirneb building inside the site and that was the reason for my mistake. Interestingly in the environmental impact report for the Dept. of Census and Statistics building (which I found on their website) the building location they have indicated is a bit confusing. One rather crude map shows an area approximately adjacent to the Suchirneb site, while the report also has a screen grab from Google maps, where the site is more to the West (very much away from the Suchirneb site) Don't know what to make of that! Unfortunately the appendix of the report with the detailed building plans was not made available on the web. (I suppose that is a good thing!) How did you find about that they are building the Census and Statistics dept. building on the site Raji J?
Well, anyway, too bad about that, but I have to say the Water's Edge and Parliament area is really really nice now.
raji j August 22nd, 2012, 07:39 AM Sohan G.. one of my friend is living in polduwa road. so when i going there i usually by pass those sites. in fact when i 1st saw those cranes i also thought that they had commenced the Suchirneb project. but that's not the case. ill post some pics next time i go there.
Shakeel August 23rd, 2012, 05:12 PM I doubt this project will ever kick off. The land should be sold off to another bidder or prospective buyers to reap max benefit.

Thanks Raji J for the info. Otherwise I would have given everyone false hopes! Anyhow whatever said and done, Sri Lanka is changing fast, and while all of it maybe not in a good direction, one must appreciate what is being done in terms of improvements in infrastructure and physical environment.

Good. It's a shame to have prime lands lying fallow.
tig January 30th, 2013, 04:30 PM Lol disgusting Indian I dont trust them!
I wouldn't blame the Indians, there isn't lack of market in Sri lanka. Look at other condo projects being halted, postponed and cancelled. While the Krrish company managed to attract investments, Suchir NEB failed and many others failed. I dont think Colombo or SL in general have a good condominium market and Im guessing Indians will be the last ones to realize that.

Its a different market altogether unlike in India they built with pre sales and in SL after the Ceylinco collapse, people only buy once they see it up in air!
Rajasinha January 30th, 2013, 05:52 PM Its a different market altogether unlike in India they built with pre sales and in SL after the Ceylinco collapse, people only buy once they see it up in air!
 True!
BTW what do you guys think about all those new housing scheme developers in and around colombo, and more generally spreading towards even smaller cities in Sri lanka?
I think people would prefer to live in a house in SL rather than the city. This is evident from the low urbanization rate, despite high income. Urbaniszation rate of just 15%, the lowest in South Asia, in contrast to the highest income in South Asia.
We'll see where the market takes us.
Popthepuff January 30th, 2013, 05:54 PM Urbanization is not necessarily apartments, office block count too. It's too bad to see this go, though. :( :ohno:
I actually liked the unique design and the fact they decided to put it in Kotte. Ah well, maybe sometime in the future I guess.
Shakeel May 10th, 2013, 12:11 PM This should be removed as its suspended or abandoned. We do have another thread under which this should be categorized.
