JB Sentral Terminal is sited on the northeast of the existing Johor Bahru Railway Station on KTMB land.

The JB Sentral was designed to upgrade the existing railway station at Johor Bahru in response to the increasing demand of rail commuters.

New bus and taxi pick up points are provided along Jalan Jim Quee to enhance this new rail station.

Two (2) multilevel car parks (comprising 726 car parking bays) are situated over both sides of the JB Sentral to provide parking facilities for the entire project.

I just hope that the underground section of the new LRT line would be planned in a way to utilise this magnificient station (without changing the historical value of its architecture)

Work on Penang Sentral to start soon
2008/10/31

http://www.utusan.com.my/pix/2008/0808/Utusan_Malaysia/Utara/wu_01.1.jpg

GEORGE TOWN: Work on the first phase of Penang Sentral in Butterworth is expected to start before the end of the year when the relocation of hawkers at the current site is completed. Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) director Datuk Ahmad Ibnihajar said the relocation would be carried out soon.

He added that the temporary terminal could accommodate up to 62 hawkers, compared to 50 at the Penang Port Commission's three-storey bus complex destroyed in a 2001 fire.

"We have handed over the temporary hawker centre to the local council, and the relocation process is up to them," he said after handing over school supplies to 300 underprivileged pupils under MRCB's "Pintar" project.

Ahmad, however, said the relocation was only expected to begin after all the stage and express bus operators had moved to the temporary terminal next month.

The temporary terminal was completed in July but to date, only RapidPenang has begun operating there.

Ahmad said work on the first phase, expected to cost RM300 million, should be completed by 2013, comprising bus and taxi terminals, and retail outlets.

The 12.8ha Penang Sentral project is jointly undertaken by Pelaburan Hartanah Bumiputera Berhad (PHBB) and MRCB.

The integrated terminal for rail, road and sea travel is one of many major projects aimed at strengthening Penang's role as a logistics and transportation hub for the Northern Corridor Economic Region.

Plan for rail station modified
Tuesday August 26, 2008
TheStar

SEVERAL modifications are being made to the original plan to build a new railway station for Kuala Kangsar at Kampung Simpang Tiga, a traditional Malay village located at the fringe of the royal town.

Manong assemblyman Datuk Ram-ly Zahari said the construction of KTM Bhd’s workers’ quarters would be relocated to the existing railway station at Jalan Sultan Idris, about 5km from the new railway station.

“The new railway station’s par-king lots will also be relocated away from Kg Simpang Tiga, enabling us to spare more houses (from demolition),” he told reporters during the Kuala Kangsar parliamentary constituency 51st Merdeka celebration recently.

Ramly, who is also Perak Umno secretary, said originally 35 houses in Kg Simpang Tiga would be demolished but developer Gamuda MMC later agreed to demolish only half the number.

“Land owners will also be adequately compensated and paid the commercial rate even though their land is officially designated as agriculture land,” said Ramly.

Kuala Kangsar MP Tan Sri Rafi- dah Aziz, who earlier handed over wheelchairs and cash aid to fire victims in Wai Thong Garden, said villagers affected by the railway project should adopt a “give and take” attitude.

“We have to make some sacrifices for the sake of development,” said Rafidah who is also Umno Wanita chief.

Rafidah said there was a need for a new railway station as the existing one was located at a sharp bend in Jalan Sultan Idris, rendering it unsuitable for fast-moving trains to make a stop.

At the event, Rafidah also handed Merdeka awards comprising a cash prize of RM500 and certificate each to nine recipients who excelled in various fields.

When the main operation of intercity trains was shifted to KL Sentral few years ago, it was quiet, especially on the side platform...

Since the start of KL-Ipoh shuttle train, in a way, more people using the old KL station again...

Ridership on the shuttle train, is very good, in my train, about 1 pm from Ipoh....it was almost full, even second class coach was packed...

Ridership on the shuttle train, is very good, in my train, about 1 pm from Ipoh....it was almost full, even second class coach was packed...That's good news, good to hear. I think it is time to push KTM to build a canopy over the platform as well.

Just curious - where do the intercity shuttle trains start from? KL Sentral or Kuala Lumpur?

And what about the KTM shuttle trains and the 'hybrid' shuttle trains? I recall that when they were announcing the hybrid trains the captions under the pictures said "KL Sentral" though you could clearly see that it was Kuala Lumpur station.

I cannot seem to find this info from KTM themselves but maybe Im looking in the wrong place.

Still looking forward to going to Ipoh by train along with my motorcycle.

Part of the renovations to Platform 2 & 3 of the south platform of KL Station (the old station area) involves raising the level of the platform to the same height as Komuter trains.

But they have also closed off the stairs to Platform 2 & 3 from the tunnel which is a bit strange. Better to put fare gates or a semi-permanent barrier instead of closing the tunnel access.

1 june 2010 is the 125th anniversary of railway service in the Peninsula.

The whole of 2010 should be declared as KTMs year and marked with celebrations...like marking the return to the "old" section of Kuala Lumpur station.

Perfect idea in my mind convert the old station to a "Komuter" station and once and for all demolish the stuipid ugly looking present so called "komuter"station and perhaps have a bridge linking the old station to the pasar seni LRT station:lol:

I wonder the bridge will be longer than the Bank Negara- Bandaraya or not.

I would imagine it to be the same length!!!

The Bank Negara- Bandaraya bridge is 77 meters long. The shortest possible bridge link to Pasar Seni is 95 meters. There will be about 323 meters to walk from the existing KL Komuter platform to pasar seni. So, Kl Sentral is still the choice to interchange to KJL...

As for the bus terminal, it should definitely be moved from there. It is just the wrong place for a bus terminal. There is a large carpark on the other side of the tracks that would be a far better site for the buses (as well as the Seremban-bound buses).

Interesting news...it looks like the Medan Kidd bus terminal in Ipoh will be expanded and rebuilt as Ipoh Sentral.

With the connection to KTM intercity and ETS service, plus busses, this 'Sentral' will actually be better and more 'integrated' and 'intermodal' than the original KL Sentral.

So the bus terminal be rebuilt and a pedestrian walkway to be built to connect the railway station?
It's about 400 to 500m walking distance...
Or we recommend the long escalator just like in airport?

Or we recommend the long escalator just like in airport?given that this is Malaysia, you can probably expect some kind of 2-level covered, air conditioned walkway with shoplots! :bash:

Or maybe they will just extend the terminal so it is closer to the train station.

The Johor Baru train station will be turned into a museum.
Its operations will be moved to JB Sentral, which is behind the JB station.
— Picture by Zulkarnain Ahmad Tajuddin

JOHOR: The 80-year-old Johor Baru train station will call it a day by the end of next month when it will be turned into a train museum, the largest of its kind in the country.

Once the station is closed, all train operations here will be shifted to JB Sentral, a stone's throw away, which is the transport hub in the city centre.

Preparation and renovation works will pave the way for the opening of the museum, scheduled for the last quarter of the year.

Visitors will see old and rare railway exhibits.

Among them will be the token and signal systems, log books, seats, as well as uniforms of railway workers used from the day Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd started operations.

KTMB southern region manager Tariq Umar Mohamed said this will be the second museum of its kind after the Kuala Lumpur station, which opened to the public in 2006, and occupies the space of two rooms. "However, the Johor Baru train museum will occupy the whole complex and feature more exhibits. It is set to become a new tourist attraction in the city centre," he said.

Tariq said the museum was KTMB's idea, adding that the building will have a cafeteria for the convenience of visitors .

The existing Johor Baru station, at Jalan Tun Razak, was built in 1931 at a cost of RM75,900 by Swan & Mac Larden, which also built the Johor Baru South police station and the Johor Baru courthouse.

Prior to that, from 1917, all the train services operated from a small wooden building near the station.

The architectural design of the double-storey station is colonial in style. In the early days, guest rooms were on the top floor.

"Today, they are used for administrative purposes.

The Johor Baru station is the last stop before Singapore. Its nearest station to the north is at the Danga City Mall, 2km away.

I dual function a museum and a operating station.Kuala Lumpur station? Or JB station?

JB station stops operating at the end of July so it will be fully converted to a museum - I can only hope that they will also showcase the cross-border travel relationship & JB transport - not just KTMB.

As for the Kuala Lumpur station mini-museum - it is nice enough but needs to be expanded - there are many places where adaptive reuse can be introduced to the railway station.

Also, it would be far better if the intercity bus services were moved to the parking lot at the side of the train station or behind it - giving a much nicer layout & view.

‘JB Sentral epitomises Iskandar Malaysia potential’
June 27, 2010, Sunday
http://www.theborneopost.com/?p=41850

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2008/12/15/nation/n_16ciq.jpg

JOHOR BAHARU: JB Sentral, a spanking new complex here, epitomises not only the development of Johor but also the potential of Iskandar Malaysia, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said yesterday.

He said the RM2 billion project, which formed part of the Southern Gateway development, was also expected to contribute to the Government Transformation Programme in the country’s march towards a developed nation by 2020.

“JB Sentral is not only a public transit station and a train transportation hub in the same league as KL Sentral but also a hub for international train services.

“This complex will become a one-stop centre because it also houses commercial lots as well as offices of government and private agencies,” he said.

Muhyiddin was speaking at the opening of the JB Sentral by the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim, and the launching of Kembara Mahkota Johor 2010 yesterday.

Muhyiddin said the facility, which has a gross floor area of 87,330 sq metres, would provide new job opportunities to the people and increase their earnings.

The government was also expected to collect RM3.6 million a year in rentals, he said. — Bernama

“JB Sentral will ease traffic movement in the city’s commercial centre and acts as a main stop-over for people commuting between Malaysia and Singapore,” he said of the complex which has 726 parking lots, 18 commercial lots and 30 kiosks.

He called on the JB Sentral management to care for the new complex and adopt a good maintenance system.

He added that services at JB Sentral should be efficient in line with its modern facilities. — Bernama

Roh pun sayangkan stesen Tanjong Pagar
Oleh YEO LI SHIAN 14 Ogos 2010
http://www.kosmo.com.my/kosmo/content.asp?y=2010&dt=0814&pub=Kosmo&sec=Rencana_Utama&pg=ru_01.htm

http://www.kosmo.com.my/kosmo/pix/2010/0814/Kosmo/Rencana_Utama/ru_01.1.jpg

Sebaliknya rasa sayu Shamsul, 43, bertempat.

http://www.kosmo.com.my/kosmo/pix/2010/0814/Kosmo/Rencana_Utama/ru_01.2.jpg

“Seingat saya, ketika mula-mula berpindah, saya sangat teruja. Saya berpeluang tengok negara orang.

“Malah, pada tahun 1980-an, pendapatan kutipan tiket pernah mencecah sehingga S$40,000 (RM93,346) sehari.

STESEN Tanjong Pagar dibanjiri jurufoto amatur

KTM can make money from the station if they could JV with private to conserve, refurbish, and commercialize it. just like how they did with YTL in sentul park.no doubt they could. The first thing they could do is get rid of the parking lots on the east side and build...oh wait, they cannot build anything that overlooks the train station.

So what can they do? No one is going to go hang out at Kuala Lumpur station, unless you make it part of the new hotel that will be built next to the KTM headquarters.

Yeap, betol, KTM has been around for 100 years plus already. For sure they would have some things museum-grade wise. Those bricked EMUs and those pre-komuter Railbuses and some steam locos would be a great start. I've been to the National Railway Museum in York and I can say they do have an awesome collection of stuffs. A museum full of trains! It was the happiest day of my life. :D

I've been to the National Railway Museum in York and I can say they do have an awesome collection of stuffs. A museum full of trains! It was the happiest day of my life. :DKuala Lumpur is a working station so the only way they can put static rail displays is to put them on the east side of the platform where they would be in the sun & exposed to the rain. The east side of the complex is being used for offices and the west side still has the KTM parcel delivery service.

Sentul would have been the best place for a railway museum. Pasar Seni would be the best place for an urban rail museum if they had planned the urban rail network properly (with the LRT lines interchanging at Pasar Seni, not Masjid Jamek).

But honestly, as much as I want to preserve the heritage of M'sian railways, I'm more interested in preserving the future of M'sian railways with good public transport policy making, excellent quality planning and timely investment - and of course, with openness, transparency and accountability.

Opened in 1935, at the same time as the railway station, the hotel will house its last batch of guests today and will cease all operations by the end of the month.

It is understood that the hotel premises will be handed back to the Railway Asset Corporation (RAC) as the lease is expiring.

When contacted, an RAC spokesperson said the corporation had not decided on what it would do with the premises.More heritage slowly, quietly lost.

Singapore to conserve historic railway stations
Two railway stations to be returned by Malaysia to Singapore will be conserved as historic sites, officials announced Friday following a citizens' campaign to save the buildings from destruction.

There were fears that the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, located on prime real estate on the fringes of the central business district, would be turned into yet another shopping mall or condominium in construction-mad Singapore.

A government statement said the art deco-style terminal would be a national monument, while the smaller Bukit Timah station close to the Malaysian border would also be conserved, in recognition of their "deep historical significance".

Both were built during British colonial rule over the two countries as part of a railway line that serviced Singapore, Malaya and Thailand.

The Malaysian federation retained ownership of railway land and structures within Singapore after the two countries separated in 1965, and the stations became part of a long-running spat that periodically strained relations.

In May 2010, both countries agreed Malaysia would cede ownership of the land in exchange for real estate in two of Singapore's most expensive districts.

The agreement sparked concerns that the Singapore government would convert the shabby buildings to commercial use, triggering an online petition to save the buildings for posterity.

Carolyn Seet, an information technology specialist who started the petition, welcomed the government's announcement on the Tanjong Pagar station.

"Needless to say, I'm very happy. Hopefully, they will keep it open to the public. My wish is basically it will be a transportation museum like the one in London," she told AFP.

She also suggested the station can be "a place for people to reminisce, and see how far Singapore has come, from the humble rickshaw to the modern driverless" train system.

Thats good news.I sure like to see what they can do with it that KTM cant with the old KL main station.:lol:neither one is particularly "well-located" in terms of having "the city" nearby - KL is probably located 'closer' to the city than Tg. Pagar but it is harder to get there because of the roadways design.

On the other hand, Tg. Pagar does look better and it can probably be included as a short museum stop on a tour of Mt. Faber or Sentosa.

Thats for sure:)That part of the island will be the extension of the CBD once they shut down the cargo terminal when its lease runs outwhich terminal :) the rail terminal or the Keppel sea terminal or the Tg. Pagar sea terminal?

Also, I wonder what will happen to rail cargo. One thing that always made me wonder about the KTM rail link into Singapore was why the rail link did not connect to the cargo terminal - because there is a huge opportunity for railway transhipment being lost and a lot of congestion on the highways that can be reduced.

I know the KTM railway is cannot handle a lot of freight shipment (because it is only single track in many areas - but really, an investment in expanding the railway in Malaysia would be of huge benefit to Singapore - especially for the freight & cargo side.

They could have done more, sometimes the stations look so out of place(too modern for the serounding area (tapah station)

I suggest old wooden railway station to be retained, but with modification such as enlarged passenger area and higher platform to meet the needs of the new railway infrastructure.

Thats the bottom line! Some if not most of the stations in australia and europe its just platform and if lucky there is a little pondok for shelter,But for sure there will be enough parking for cars.

RAILWAY STATIONS IN ROYAL TOWN
http://nry.com.my/transportation4.html
The design of the railway stations in the royal town of Kuala Kangsar, Alor Setar and Kangar. The architectural layout is similar to the rest of the railway stations. However, the elevation and architectural treatment of the stations take a more Islamic decorative approach.
