Massive Olympic hockey party will only be for corporate elite
By Damian InwoodNovember 30, 2008
A huge, invitation-only hockey party house -- where VIPs will rub shoulders with hockey superstars -- will be set up near GM Place for the duration of the 2010 Winter Olympics.
The 5,338-square-metre hospitality tent will host up to 2,000 VIP guests per day.
"It will be the epicentre of hockey during the Olympics," said Johnny Misley, executive vice-president of hockey operations for Hockey Canada. "We've done this in smaller forms in previous Olympics, but nothing of this magnitude.
"This is a special Olympics when we're on home soil and it's a chance not only to celebrate the Olympics, but to celebrate the game of hockey on a world stage."
He said that the zone -- called Hockey House LIVE! -- will be on the site normally occupied by Cirque du Soleil on Pacific Boulevard.
"It won't be cheap, that's for sure," said Misley, when asked what the pavilion will cost.
Guests will enjoy "an atmosphere charged with the energy of passionate fans and the charisma of hockey's elite alumni," according to a request for proposals.
The party house will include bars, big-screen TVs, entertainment stages and private hospitality lounges.
The 2,300-sq-m "MVP Square" will include a mezzanine level.
Misley said that invited guests will include the International Ice Hockey Federation, Hockey Canada, the National Hockey League, the NHL Players Association, as well as key corporate partners.
Misley said the greats of Canadian hockey will "mingle with our corporate or hockey family people."
He said a recent Hockey Canada event in Halifax included legends like Bobby Orr and Bobby Hull.
