D-Mac October 23rd, 2002, 05:42 AM Tomorrow Square
Shanghai, China
HEIGHT: 285m/931 feet
FLOORS: 55 floors
COMPLETION: 2002
ARCHITECT: John Portman and Associates
Strategically located on Nanjing Road adjacent to People's Park, Tomorrow Square has an unmatched opportunity to create a powerful visual impact. The sleek 55-story tower is clad in aluminum and glass. Reaching upward in a straightforward, geometric manner, the building boasts clean and uncluttered lines with the contemporary look of the future. The building's vertical movement is reinforced by the dominant triangular shapes at both the top and base. This impact is increased by the placement of the tower - it rises directly from a landscaped plaza at street level, facing 2 of the major streets that border the site.
There are 2 main structures: the tower and podium. The tower, originally designed as a hotel and office building, is now being renovated to a business class, 500 room hotel, and business apartments complex for JW Marriot. The podium includes the low-rise retail galleria and conference centre. To reinforce its strong vertical form, the tower and podium are visually separate though functionally linked via a sky lit atrium.

Pablo October 23rd, 2002, 06:01 AM quite nice 9/10;)
TYW October 23rd, 2002, 06:14 AM 7/10
kinda out of shape
Ersh October 23rd, 2002, 07:37 AM I'm sorry, but I think this is one of the ugliest buildings in Asia. I think the hollow pyramid at the top is horrid...:( 4/10
Caledon1981 October 23rd, 2002, 07:47 AM a giant screwdriver .. . 5/10
AG October 23rd, 2002, 08:53 AM The sloping roof is good, and the way it turns 45 degrees in the middle is unique, but it could use some more curves, otherwise, not bad.
6/10
enzo October 23rd, 2002, 08:58 AM 4/10. Looks like a painful medical device. I don't think this will age well.
RafflesCity October 23rd, 2002, 05:12 PM 8/10
A very interesting and optimistic design. At night the top part glows like a powerful beacon.
Subdude October 23rd, 2002, 09:40 PM I like the top - it reminds me of the arms of a robot doing jumping jacks. On the other hand, the overhang of the top section over the bottom looks quite awkward from some angles. One certainly has to give some credit, though, for a cheery name like "Sunjoy Tomorrow". Overall, not great, but not bad at all. 5.
Sunflower October 23rd, 2002, 11:04 PM It's ok but it feels like there's something missing.
7/10
SUNNI October 24th, 2002, 12:44 PM 8! i like it but at second glance, it dont look as good
cgrassham October 25th, 2002, 01:24 PM Its okay, the top looks good at night, but I think the building is a bit tacky 7/10

I agree!
Muse October 25th, 2002, 06:20 PM Has it decided what it would like to be yet?
There are adventurous designs and there are adven......
5 (i go to give it one more point just for the English translated name however, it will reamain at 5).
5 it is.
SteelCity32 October 27th, 2002, 05:17 PM very nice piece of work. 8.5/10
BoresvilleMcYawn October 27th, 2002, 05:35 PM This is just hideous...
and they need to stop naming these things with names like happy land plaza or whatnot..even though I know it must represent something in chinese..
NickT October 28th, 2002, 12:58 AM 7/10 I like the design and the top, i aggree with Boresville some of these buildings have strange names.
DrumCorpsAlum November 6th, 2002, 07:26 PM 9.5/10. What a skyscraper should be.
Steven November 10th, 2002, 01:23 AM I like how the building on the top is 45 degrees different than the bottom and I also like the crown on top.
9/10
Liz L November 22nd, 2002, 09:21 PM 7.5/10 - It has good height, helped by the sloping setbacks, and manages to turn 45 degrees on its axis without looking like it's in hideous pain. The facade does a good job of dancing in the light, too. The top, however, is not so good - thoe giant pincers look SO out of place, even if they provide a big "splash" at night.
Maybe the building could have used a couple of setbacks down near the base...
Oh, and Boresville McYawn - I think it must be REALLY hard to translate from Chinese to English - I remember a Chinese dish named "General Tsing's seven happiness", or something like that...Of course, the languages are so different....
De Snor November 23rd, 2002, 12:26 AM I don't know ..... I miss something here but what ? No idea !
CG5 November 23rd, 2002, 07:41 AM Jiggawhat the f*ck is that?? It gets points for being so weird I did a double take. 5.5/10
Bobdreamz November 23rd, 2002, 09:41 AM hmmm...not a typical Portman design now is it..??...sure it's unorthodox but Shanghai is full of unorthodox designs!!..(by the way I'm starting to really admire Shanghai & it's highrises)...some of you are judging too harshly..go look at the pics again after the 1st. one...this is far from a hideous building...I've seen worse..
8/10
Lars November 23rd, 2002, 02:47 PM It's IMO not so nice, cause the shape isn't perfect. 7/10
enzo December 15th, 2002, 07:59 AM some of you are judging too harshly
Bob I adore Shanghai and many of it's highrises but I don't think one could EVER be too harsh in lambasting this....."thing"......
Maybe you could love it like people came to love the "Elephant Man" but it's not a person nor even an animal, it's just a hideous manifestation of steel, concrete and glass! Of course that is only my opinion but I'm sticking with it!;) No one expects the Spanish Inquisition but this building is what I'd expect them to painfully torture me with!
This wins Portman an "Architectural Anal Probe Award". I'm addressing the envelope as soon as I'm done typing.:D
UrbanLandscape December 15th, 2002, 11:12 AM I remember the proposal for it in the <u>Wall Street Journal</i> years ago! I think it looks almost castle-like.
RafflesCity February 24th, 2003, 07:13 PM Heres a picture from neon's thread.

The Messiah February 25th, 2003, 06:35 PM Looks like something from a science fiction movie but then just 10 times lower then those in the movies.
7.0/10
renell February 25th, 2003, 07:11 PM i give it credit for being an interesting design (castle like design) but i dont like the design. 6
Oaronuviss February 26th, 2003, 06:04 AM NOW THERE IS A BUILDING.

Evergrey April 11th, 2003, 03:26 AM 3 Hideous... way out of shape... and the hollow pyramid is TACKY!
airsickpenthousedweller April 16th, 2003, 07:44 PM I guess it was supposed to look dynamic, but it didn't work out that way. Looks pathetic because of that.
TropicalSQ744 May 5th, 2003, 03:31 PM Looks like something out of Star Wars.. Very futuristic.. at the same time threatening.. :) Good use of architecture to invoke feelings I'll say.. haha  Very daring design overall.. maybe a little overboard
8.5/10
Chad May 8th, 2003, 07:22 AM Sunjoy Tomorrow Square is unique, very unique. The constricted lower part of the building is so compatible with the considerable javelin-like top which is has this gorgeous trait to compelling the pedrestrian and others.......Uniquely unique.....9.5/10
rj2uman May 21st, 2003, 05:28 AM 9/10 Pointy but SHARP pointy! How cool is that?? VERY.
james2390 June 8th, 2003, 09:21 PM very nice! 10
Monkey August 8th, 2003, 10:14 AM O dear. I'm afraid I' don't share the enthusiasm Liz manages to develop. I think all that grey is depressing and the design, although it makes great efforts to escape being a plain box, nothing but boring.
A 4.
7 World Trade August 22nd, 2003, 01:38 AM this building's architectually amazing, like one of a kind. it manages to have its shape without looking bizzare (and i don't know how they managed to do that) man, some ss.com editor should post more of these pics.
9.0
AtlanticaC5 August 27th, 2003, 04:30 PM Nah, I don't like this one, 5.5/10

Trances October 22nd, 2003, 11:33 AM Great roof feature reminds me of the Tower in Dubai
UrbanDesigner October 22nd, 2003, 04:05 PM 3.5/10 unless the top opened and spaceships entered and exited from the grips the arms at night...
lester October 31st, 2003, 01:44 PM 10/10
MCC November 7th, 2003, 10:47 PM 7/10 Cool colors.
Fabio November 8th, 2003, 01:47 AM 7/10
kind of weird
manx_bkk November 17th, 2003, 06:07 AM 6/10
Looks very dull, something is missing in the building. The crown could have been better.
alex3000 November 17th, 2003, 09:06 AM 10/10
ParraMan January 6th, 2004, 03:38 AM 7
Not beautiful, nor ugly. Interesting attempt at a new twist on the usual pyramid topped tower.....But looks a bit disjointed, out of proportion. I don't know, I am confused by it and that disturbs my points processes.
Aquarius January 12th, 2004, 08:56 PM I do not like the top part, look like a toy of pieces 6,5/10
dj n-tenzti January 20th, 2004, 02:16 AM I'm gonna say this is one of my favorites, feels very modern, 9/10
Brasil Guy May 19th, 2004, 05:21 PM 9/10
beyond 1000 June 7th, 2004, 03:51 AM 4.0/10
Has good height but nothing else. I don't know what the guy who designed this got for it but if you ask me he ought to have gotten life.
Schroedinger's Cat June 20th, 2004, 04:07 PM 7/10
yoyo22 July 16th, 2004, 11:45 PM 6.5/10
Its a decent building. I like it when an architect takes a chance, but I still dont grade any easier. The idea is intriguing but it seems that the proportions are wrong. Too slim on the bottom, and the top seems to big for the base, although if the base was 10-20% larger widthwise, I would be much happier. I like the hollow pyramid on top, and the lower part. Color is bland though.
LibertyTwo July 17th, 2004, 12:40 AM Don't like the angle of th esecond picure ;-(
Unoriginal colour, windows, and cornice, looks like someone twisted the top 90 degrees off from the bottom
But good height - although built in a time and place when it should have been 300+
6/10
hongkiu July 17th, 2004, 06:38 PM 8/10
Dennis August 27th, 2004, 12:15 PM strange looking one, but i like it
not bad 8/10
Jheef August 27th, 2004, 02:45 PM 10/10
David3820 August 27th, 2004, 06:57 PM Wow, it's pretty unique and tall enough for my liking and I love the way it widens out at the top and looks quite different from all angels. So It deserves a 9/10 from me.
Dubai-Lover August 27th, 2004, 07:53 PM crazy architecture, but i love it! 8.5
DamienK September 11th, 2004, 05:38 PM Unique shape. 7.5/10
therock September 12th, 2004, 12:27 PM 5/10
Imperial September 15th, 2004, 03:38 PM Nice 8/10
Monkey September 15th, 2004, 10:07 PM 4/10
Hate it. Sorry. It looks so contrived.
Monkey September 15th, 2004, 10:08 PM Okay, maybe 4 is a little harsh. I'll give it 5.5
andysimo123 November 6th, 2004, 01:58 AM From some veiws it looks like an arrow head. Crazy 8/10
tritown November 9th, 2004, 04:20 AM it's like an optical illusion. It looks completely different from different angles. 9/10
EDIT: and so controversial...
Zuelas November 20th, 2004, 05:20 PM 8.5
I really dig this one. The top is awesome and I appreciate how it almost rotates into a new building half the way up. Looks better in pictures when it's cloudly so leads me to think it'd look better as a darker color.
Paolo December 28th, 2004, 11:56 PM 9/10
very unique
SkyHawk January 20th, 2005, 05:15 PM 8.5/10

Auxodium February 6th, 2005, 07:25 PM looks like a tweaked version of Central Park of Perth :p
i wouldn't mind having that in Perth either!!!

Chibcha2k April 9th, 2005, 04:25 AM ...i can't really like it 7.5/10
Pengui April 16th, 2005, 07:26 AM One of the strangest I've ever seen ^^
From some angles it looks short, but it's very tall Oô
The cladding is not nice. The lighting could be a bit better. Still very daring.
I give it 7.5, mostly for being original and being good at it ^^
Justadude April 17th, 2005, 10:14 PM Neat idea for the design, though I'm not sure what to think about the pincers. I hope the name sounds less awkward in Chinese.
Latoso May 28th, 2005, 02:50 AM 8.5/10
Jules May 28th, 2005, 11:30 PM Unique. 7.
Phobos May 29th, 2005, 12:33 AM 8/10
It's too slim for my taste, however I like its design.
Skybean May 31st, 2005, 02:41 AM I love it. It looks so menancing much like that of 2IFC. I must say.. this is my favourite name for a skyscraper. 9

mtb_nz June 4th, 2005, 09:04 AM A very interesting building. I like the triangular shapes and the top triangle was a nice design 8.5/10
geminiguy7 June 8th, 2005, 02:09 AM good design 8/10
empersouf June 17th, 2005, 09:40 PM Looks like Coruscant, a bit too fat too. 7.5

SoboleuS June 20th, 2005, 11:50 AM It's really weird and unusual, but looks good. 8/10

pali September 4th, 2005, 02:54 AM good one 8.5
homecoming September 30th, 2005, 02:23 PM I am not very wowed with this one. Everything I see isn't spectacular pretty. Somehow, with another designer who must have rushed through the design qualities and gave us a building he must of designed something out of something he sees. The building is not pretty, and not something you should be interested on. 4/10
london-b September 30th, 2005, 08:44 PM That is nasty,4.5/10
Dancer October 4th, 2005, 07:48 AM Very cool. I like it. 9.0

The Mad Hatter!! October 4th, 2005, 04:46 PM 7/10
i like it,the hollow top is kinda ugly but i like it. i also like the glass of the top(the grey glass). but it seems like there are 2 buildings instead of one, the top part doesn't look anything like the bottom squarish building.
EuroStar October 6th, 2005, 02:41 AM 8.5
Gerard October 6th, 2005, 10:36 AM Not bad at all, 8
Oriolus October 7th, 2005, 12:45 PM 8/10. All up a great tower. I'm not real keen on the hollow pyramid on top and also, just looking at the photos it seems that because the top and bottom are at different angles the light strikes them differently, meaning the top and bottom often look different.
jesarm October 7th, 2005, 07:25 PM nice roof and good shpae 7,5/10
Accura4Matalan October 11th, 2005, 03:37 PM Not a great tower, and a rubbish name. 6/10.

clopter October 26th, 2005, 07:35 AM 9/10. Excellent, uplifting, positive design. Great silhouette. Would be even better if taller. Shanghai has some of the best futuristic architecture in the world.
Mosaic October 26th, 2005, 07:01 PM I don't like it much, it's wierd design. it's just tall and glassy.5/10
Skylandman October 30th, 2005, 09:25 PM 9/10

mr_storms December 30th, 2005, 09:25 PM 6/10, unique but I hate buildings that get larger as they go up.
FROM LOS ANGELES December 30th, 2005, 09:30 PM It's a weird building, but kinda cool. 8/10
warnings January 9th, 2006, 02:32 PM 9/10 looks good very futuristic
Scruffy88 January 12th, 2006, 04:01 AM This is the most evil looking building in existence. I love it. I used it in something and painted it jet black in photoshop and it looked so much better. And more evil. One thing you have to give china is credit for their originality in design. You would never ever see this building in any city in North America.
9/10
rxpilot February 25th, 2006, 07:58 AM More height would give it a better feel of actually pointing to the future. Nevertheless, a 9/10

Looks like if it has been made by aliens...I love it!!
sharpie20 March 4th, 2006, 06:21 AM 8.5/10 I had the oppritunity to see this building in person, I really like it.
lasdun March 4th, 2006, 06:52 PM In the flesh it just looks bad, especialy with the Jinmao across the river sneering down appon it. The Bund Center, despite being 20 odd shorter is better quality and has more impact.
This one belongs with the other early chinese highrises, not the current generation.
René March 4th, 2006, 11:58 PM 8 /10. Marvelous
Rem March 5th, 2006, 12:52 PM 6/10, amazing but i don't like

One of a handful of good looking buildings in Shanghai.
Stands out even better against the super ugly concert hall in the foreground.

gladisimo January 10th, 2007, 04:48 PM 6. I like what they tried to accomplish with this, it looks like two different buildings from different angles. Too bad I only like it from one of the angles, from the other it just looks, bad?
Progamer January 10th, 2007, 05:13 PM 7/10
A decent design. Its identifiable but not in such a way that it really stands out or jumps at me. It might be the pictures though, but it does look a bit dull and could look better.

hans gruber January 31st, 2007, 02:45 PM One of the better designs in Shanghai. I think it would have looked better if the ball at the top was replaced with a glass pyramid.
mysteek_1976 February 2nd, 2007, 12:51 AM it's never really a great idea to draw too much attention to the middle of a tower. this tower is creative but it's too "fun house" like for me. I do love the pyramid at the top, it's interesting. 8
imani February 2nd, 2007, 03:17 PM 8 / 10
the glass looks dirty and old. why? but I like the overall design. it's sharp.
