DrYaqoob May 21st, 2012, 09:28 AM
May 21, 2012

pavan9741650414 May 21st, 2012, 05:45 PM HUBLI: Residents of Devi Nagar and nearby Vidhya Nagar had a harrowing time after the bridge linking these areas collapsed and washed away in heavy rain five years ago.
They submitted umpteen memorandums, pleaded for help from the authorities concerned and waited for years, only to realize later that all their pleas have fallen on deaf ears. It was then that they decided to construct a temporary bridge to connect these areas which are separated by a small stream.
The bridge was made using pipes provided by HDMC. The residents arranged the big pipes in the flowing stream and patched them up with three layers of mud.
"Now, pedestrians and two-wheeler riders can use the bridge. Cars, autorickshawas and other vehicles are not allowed on this bridge. Such vehicles have to enter Devi Nagar from Shirur Park and Lingaraj Nagar," Santosh Patil, a resident of Devi Nagar, said.
There was no bridge between Devi Nagar and Vidhya Nagar through KEB colony and this temporary bridge may also collapse in the overflow of stream water during rainy season. "In the absence of bridge, school going children and workers have to travel nearly 2 km and pass through Shirur Park, Lingaraj Nagar or other areas to reach Vidhya Nagar," said N H Doddamani, a resident of Devi Nagar.

pavan9741650414 May 22nd, 2012, 05:33 AM 80 firms to ink deals in GIM 2: Nirani
Bangalore, May 21, 2012, DHNS :
Industries Minister Murugesh Nirani on Monday said around 5,000 acres of the 40,000 acres of land notified by his department during the Global Investors Meet-I had been denotified.
Speaking to reporters in Bangalore, Nirani said around 1,400 acres were denotified in Davangere, 1,200 acres in Mangalore, and 800 in Belgaum.
He said the lands were denotified because of pressure from farmers. Of the 387 firms that signed MoUs during the investorss meet in June 2010, about 40 per cent had backed out, he said.
He did not specify any reason, but said the remaining 60 per cent would complete their projects in the next three years.
Nirani said around 80 Fortune 500 companies, including the Reliance Group, would sign MoUs during GIM 2 to be held on June 6, 7 and 8. Infosys founder N R Narayana Murthy will deliver the keynote address at the inaugural function. Special focus will be on the implementation of high-speed rail projects.
The government has planned rail links from Chennai to Bangalore to Mysore, and from Hubli to Belgaum in the first phase; from Bangalore to Hubli and Bangalore to Gulbarga in the second phase.
Nirani said a technical expert, who has worked on several high-speed rail projects in Japan, will visit Bangalore in June and give his suggestions to the government.
The travel time from Bangalore to Mysore, for instance, will be only 25 minutes, he said. Nirani said the government would focus on implementation of the tunnel road project in the Western Ghats to cut down the travel time from Bangalore to Mangalore.
When asked what the government would do to meet the water needs of companies in the drought-hit North Karnataka districts, Nirani said his department was focusing on projects to recycle waste water.
He said an expression of interest for Rs 1,000 crore was called for, and companies, including Ion Exchange, Thermax, Triveni Engineering, had evinced interest.
He said seven to eight places in Bangalore had been identified for setting up the recycling units. In phase two, units will be set up in Mysore, Mangalore, Gulbarga, Hubli and Belgaum, he said. The minister said Union Energy Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde would preside over the ground-breaking ceremony for the 2600-MW Kudagi thermal power project in Bijapur in June.

pavan9741650414 May 22nd, 2012, 05:36 AM Tenders called for to set up plants on PPP model
The State government has proposed to set up seven sewage treatment plants in Bangalore to meet the city's industrial water requirement.
Minister for Medium and Large Industries Murugesh Nirani told mediapersons here on Monday that tenders had been called for to set up sewage water recycling plants on private-public partnership (PPP) model in the city.
Triveni Engineering and Industries Limited, Pune, and Thermax Limited, Pune, have shown interest in setting up the plants.
The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board has set up one such plant near Kengeri on Bangalore-Mysore Road.
Based on how this project turns out in Bangalore, a decision would be taken to set up similar plants in Mysore, Belgaum, Mangalore, Hubli and other cities, the Minister said.
Asked about water requirement of industries in north Karnataka, he said the industries had been told to take up rainwater harvesting.
On the threat by the Karnataka Small-Scale Industries Association (KASSIA) to boycott next month's Global Investors' Meet, he said the small and medium industrialists had been opposing compulsory issue of trade licences by urban local bodies.
A draft had been prepared on the issue, which would be notified soon.
They will meet Bangalore's industrial water requirement'

DrYaqoob May 22nd, 2012, 05:54 AM Financial literacy helps Trichur beat bigger rivals
Coimbatore, May 20:
Many small towns such as Trichur, Puducherry, Hubli, Tiruchi and Tirunelveli have made it to the 6-35 rank category, sometimes beating bigger rivals.
For instance, Kerala's Trichur, with a 0.54 per cent share in the income fund category, is ahead of Kochi, Coimbatore and Lucknow. In the equity fund list, Tirchur has a 1.02 per cent share, ahead of Lucknow, Kochi, Kanpur, etc.
In balanced funds, smaller cities such as Thiruvananthapuram and Surat have pushed back bigger metros such as Chennai and Bangalore. In the Gold ETF, Trichur is ahead of cities such as Thiruvananthapuram, Coimbatore and Patna. Even Tirunelveli has grabbed a slot with a 0.39 per cent share in the Gold ETF list.
Explaining the rare insight provided by the UTI MF's geographical investment data, Mr C.J. George, Managing Director, Geojit BNP Paribas Financial Services Ltd, Kochi, said: Most importantly, this is directly proportionate to the financial literacy of the community and the reach of distribution and metros ranked better in these parameters.
He said he was not surprised by Mumbai's dominance in both equity and MF investments. Early industrialisation and joint stock form of business organisation resulted in the formation of the first stock exchange of Asia in Mumbai, which contributed to the growth of an investment community.
Mr George, on how small cities such as Puducherry and Trichur were ahead of their big city rivals in equity investment, said traditionally Trichur was ahead of other places in financial literacy. During the 1960s (before the bank nationalisation) Trichur had the highest number of commercial banks registered among all cities in India.
Even today, it is home to the registered offices of three scheduled commercial banks South Indian Bank, Dhanlaxmi Bank and Catholic Syrian Bank. It was the first city in Kerala where UTI started its own branch office before Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. IReferring to the investor profile of his own company, he said it had branches in small towns such as Gadag in Karnataka, Kolencherry in Kerala and Kandwa in Madhya Pradesh from where investors operate.
It was not the wealth of the community that mattered. It's financial literacy and financial maturity.
Mr George, on why Jaipur topped the list in UTI MF's GILT fund category (AUM Rs 431 crore), said it was difficult to draw a conclusion unless the number of folios and the average AUM was available. It could be that a few large investors tilted the numbers. RYN

DrYaqoob May 22nd, 2012, 12:11 PM Dharwad's Jewish connection
While the musical and cultural heritage of Dharwad is known far and wide, it is not so in case of its historical heritage.
One of the lesser known but unique historical site here is the Jewish cemetery, which is the standing testimony to Jewish culture that flourished here long ago. Jewish families seem to have lived here till late 1950s.
But today's generation hardly has any information about the Jewish heritage here. The cemetery is in a bad condition, and it may be completely lost if steps are not taken to preserve it. It is at an obscure place near the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad, campus. It has no proper approach road and one has to walk through the fields to reach there. The area where many prominent Jews were laid to rest bears an ugly look as it is being used to dump and burn solid waste.
The exact number of graves here is not known. But this correspondent traced evidence of nearly 20 graves of which only five have remained along with epitaphs on stones of another eight. The oldest grave is of Subedar Major Huskelji Bapoojee Sardar Bahadur, who was laid to rest on February 14, 1872. The last burial here must have taken place on April 26, 1950, when Shaloam Elijah Walwatker was laid to rest. There are graves of children too.
The Jewish community members laid to rest here were may be from Mumbai and other areas who came here during the British rule either as government servants or to hold other jobs. The epitaphs are in Hebrew, English and Marathi languages. Interestingly, the dates of the Saka era have been used in the Marathi epitaph.
Though some elderly people remember the presence of Jewish families here, no authentic information is available about them either in the Gazetteer or in the Department of History of Karnatak University. There is a need to preserve and conserve this unique historical site and conduct research on it.

pavan9741650414 May 23rd, 2012, 05:24 AM Bangalore, May 22: In a bid to provide land for rapid industrialistion, Karnataka has already denotified 5,000 acres of land for industrial projects in Mangalore, Davangere, Belgaum and other districts.
A proposal on underground terminal from Sakleshpur to Mangalore would also be prepared for fast movement of vehicles from Bangalore to Mangalore.
Karnatakas Large and Medium Industries Minister Murugesh Nirani disclosed this information to reporters after reviewing the preparations for the forthcoming Global Investors Meet in Bangalore in June.
The State Government has already issued preliminary notification for acquiring 40,000 acres in different parts of the State following the last Global Investors Meet (2010) held in Bangalore. Out of 40,000 acres, 5,000 acres has been denotified.
Of this, as much as 1,200 acres in Mangalore, 1,400 acres in Davanagere and 800 acres in Belgaum and 1600 acres in rest of the districts has been denotified.
Farmers protest for acquisition of lands was the major reason for the denotification. Nirani said the State Government has identified 80,000 acres across the State for industrial projects during the last GIM.
Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda, Nirani and top officials of the State Government reviewed the preparations for the next months GIM.
They also discussed incentives demanded by major industries such as Nestle India, Mangalore Refinery Petro-Chemicals Limited (MRPL), Tata Motors.
Gowda said the Government has not taken a decision on providing incentives to industrialists. Admitting that tax and other concessions would burden the State exchequer, he said another round of meeting would finalise the list of incentives to be offered to industries in the State.
Stating that attracting investment in infrastructure is on top of the State Governments agenda during the next months GIM, Nirani said the industrialists have been demanding a lot of concessions from the Government to set up their second plants in the State.
Nirani said the State Government has proposed to operate high speed rail links from Bangalore to Mysore, Hubli, Belgaum, Gulbarga and from Belgaum and Hubli.
Japan International Consultancy Company would prepare project reports on high speed rail links in the State, Nirani said.
The State Government has proposed to set up seven sewerage water recycling plants in Bangalore for meeting water requirement of industries located in the city.
Tenders have been called for setting up sewerage water recycling plants on public-private-partnership model in the City. Triveni Engineering and Industries Limited, Pune and Thermax Limited, Pune, have evinced interest to set up the plants.
Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has already set up the plant near Kengeri on Bangalore-Mysore road.

pavan9741650414 May 23rd, 2012, 05:27 AM Union government officials have promised to release funds required to finish constructing the new building of Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1 at Rajnagar in Hubli at the earliest.
This assurance was given to Pralhad Joshi, Dharwad MP, when he met the Secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy (SE&L) of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, Anshu Vaish in New Delhi on Tuesday to apprise her about the problems being faced by the students and their parents because of the delay in completion of the school building.
According to a release issued by the MP, he also met Union Minister of Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal with regard to the issue earlier in the day and urged him to take remedial steps.
During the interaction with Ms. Vaish, Mr. Joshi brought to her notice that the school building of KV No. 1 at Rajnagar in Hubli, constructed in 1985, had become dilapidated and on the approval of a Rs. 10.35-crore project for a new school building, the old one was demolished in 2010. The school was temporarily shifted to the KV No. 2 premises on Gadag Road.
Behind schedule
Subsequently, the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) took up construction of the new building and was supposed to complete it by April-end in 2011.
However, even a year after the deadline the work is yet to be completed as Rs. 3.65 crore was needed, Mr. Joshi told Ms. Vaish, according to the release.
Posts vacant
Mr. Joshi also brought to her notice that there were several teaching posts vacant in KV No. 1 and urged the secretary to initiate steps to fill up the posts in the interest of the students.
Assurance
According to the release, Ms. Vaish assured Mr. Joshi that she would immediately take steps for the release of the remaining funds required for the completion of the school building and arrange for the shifting of the school back to its earlier premises at the earliest.
She gave suitable directions to the Commissioner of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sanghatan on the issue, the release said.
Construction of new building was halted by lack of funds

I dont know if Bellad Hyundai at Bhairidevarakoppa is better...
Right now in H-D, RNS motors at Unkal is the only dealer for Maruti Suzuki and it is quite good in terms of customer satisfaction.

pavan9741650414 May 24th, 2012, 05:23 AM The Hubli-Dharwad Urban Development Authority (HDUDA), which recently demolished a few illegal structures in Dharwad, on Wednesday began its drive against illegal residential layouts coming up in the twin cities.
The drive was taken up under the supervision of HDUDA chairman Lingaraj Patil
Officials inspected illegal layouts on agricultural land at two places at Agrahara Timmasagar on the outskirts of Hubli and removed pipelines installed for water supply.
Board put up
Despite not getting clearance from government agencies, the developer erected a board on agricultural land on Survey No. 17/2 at Agrahara Timmasagar displaying the telephone numbers that one should call to book a plot.
Mr. Patil said that while the 2.5 acres of land belonged to Ismailsab Kavalikai, the holder of the General Power of Attorney was a developer, S.S. Pathan, who had initiated the development work without applying for permission.
Permission not taken'
They have not applied for permission from HDUDA nor has the land been converted from agricultural to non-agricultural use. The developer has carved out 60 plots of 20x30 ft and is making bookings, Mr. Patil told presspersons.
He said that there were around 500 illegal residential layouts in the twin cities and that houses had already come up in around 400 layouts.
The issue of regularising the [400] existing illegal layouts under the Akrama-Sakrama scheme is before the State government. We are focussing on the 100 illegal layouts that have recently come up where developers are luring gullible residents by selling plots at low prices, he said. Mr. Patil said he would appeal to people to first check the veracity of claims made by developers before entering into any sort of agreement.
Stones removed
The HDUDA chairman and his team visited another illegal layout in Agrahara Timmasagar that had come up on six acres of land off Giriyal Road on Survey no. 39/2 where around 200 plots had been demarcated using stones. The HDUDA staff removed the stones placed to demarcate the border of the plots and the layout.

pavan9741650414 May 25th, 2012, 05:10 AM Cost of 167-km long railway line is estimated at Rs 2,200 cr after state government accepted recommendations of expert team from IISc
The delay in approval by the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) for the proposed 160 km long railway line between Hubli and Ankola, which connects the north Karnataka hinterland to the upcoming Tadadi port and existing Karwar ports, has resulted in cost escalation of the project by Rs 600 crore. The cost of the project is now estimated at Rs 2,200 crore, a top government official said.
The state has requested the Railways to take up the project on public-private partnership (PPP) mode.
The infrastructure development department (IDD) has sent the Environment Impact Assessment report prepared by a team of experts from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, to the MoEF and Central Empowered Committee (CEC). We are waiting for a date from them for a hearing in this regard before they accord approval for the project, Dr Rajkumar Khatri, Secretary, IDD, told Business Standard.
He said a team of experts comprising T V Ramachandran and T G Seetharaman had recommended certain measures to avoid deforestation in the Western Ghats area. They have recommended for reduction in use of forest area for the project from earlier 727 hectares to 662 hectares and cutting of 195,000 trees to 155,000 trees in order to eliminate man-animal conflict in the forest areas.
The government has taken their report into consideration and decided to adhere to it. We have selected the second alignment to implement the project. As a result, the cost of the proposed railway project will go up by an additional Rs 600 crore to touch Rs 2,200 crore. We have explained to the MoEF on measures to be taken by us to preserve the ecology while implementing the railway project and waiting for their date for the meeting, Khatri said.
The Railway Board sanctioned the 167-km long Hubli-Ankola railway line project during 1995-96. The 45-km stretch of railway line has been completed from Hubli to Kalghatagi. Presently, the issue of environment clearance is pending before the empowered institution for Kalghatagi-Ankola stretch since the area comes under forest zone.
The IISc team had studied the biological diversity, ecology and environment in the region between Hubli and Ankola. The railway line will be laid for 163.8 km connecting Hubli to Ankola. According to the team, a total of 1,134 hectares of land (727 hectare of forest land, 210 hectare of dry land and 179 hectare of wetland) will be completely degraded with the implementation of the project. It has noted that the rail line would pass through the sensitive tiger reserve area.
The terrain that falls in between Yellapura and Sathsall has thick forests and in order to minimize the damage to the ecology in the region the expert team had suggested for construction of many tunnels and bridges.
According to a plan mooted by South Western Railway, 20 stations will come up in the 164 km stretch and this would cause more damage to the forest area. The project poses threat to the rich flora near Yellapur taluk, which is not found elsewhere.
Deforestation to the tune of 20 per cent, landslide during monsoon at Vajralli and Yellapur, construction of labour colonies and blasting of rocks could be other deterrents for the project, according to the experts.
Once completed, the Hubli-Ankola railway line will provide speedy connectivity to the hinterland in north Karnataka to the existing port at Karwar and upcoming Greenfield ports at Tadadi and Haldipur on the west coast.

DrYaqoob May 25th, 2012, 04:43 PM Pralhad Joshi bats for renewable energy
With demand for electricity exceeding supply, there was a dire need for harnessing renewable energy resources in the country, Pralhad Joshi, Dharwad MP, has said.
He was inaugurating a two-day workshop and exhibition on renewable energy organised by Image Creators, Bangalore, and Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd. (KREDL) here on Thursday.
The power requirement is expected to reach 95 lakh MW by 2030. That puts the onus on exploiting renewable energy resources in a systematic manner, Mr. Joshi said.
Currently, 53 per cent of the power generated in the country was through thermal plants. Hydel power accounted for 24 per cent, 10 per cent was gas-based and nuclear power made for 2.4 per cent, he pointed out. He supported further research and development into power generation through renewable sources.
Solar energy
Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) Commissioner K.V. Trilok Chandra said HDMC had taken steps to harness solar energy to meet the power requirements of its main building. The corporation was initiating steps to bring down power consumption by installing LED lamps. We are also planning to harness wind energy at Neerasagar in Kalghatgi taluk and Nrupatunga Betta in Hubli, he said.
Guests visited the stalls where installations used to tap renewable energy sources were displayed. The exhibition will conclude on Friday.

pavan9741650414 May 26th, 2012, 05:15 AM HUBLI: Hubli-Dharwad mayor Pandurang Patil said here on Friday that 'Operation Dirty,' a campaign to keep the twin cities clean, will commence on May 27.
The campaign focuses on making the twin cities 'garbage free' and 'container free,' by implementing an efficient door-to-door garbage collection system. If garbage is collected at the door steps of people on a regular basis, need of containers will be minimal and also there will be no spilling of garbage on the roadsides. Hence the menace of stray pigs and dogs will also come down.
The garbage so collected will be converted into vermicompost, the mayor said. Cleaning gutters regularly, fogging all areas in Hubli and Dharwad to control mosquito menace are part of the programme. The mayor sought cooperation of people to keep the twin cities spick and span.
Zero waste management
Meanwhile, a zero waste management plant was inaugurated in Navanagar on Friday. Such plants will be set up in other wards too to generate vermicompost from biodegradable waste. HDMC commissioner KV Trilokchandra appealed to residents and shop keepers to segregate garbage as degradable and non-degradable before placing it in the dustbins.

pavan9741650414 May 28th, 2012, 05:11 AM Rashtrotthana Sankalp Trust in association with environmentalists and the general public will be planting 4,000 saplings along the proposed four-lane road between Hubli and Dharwad.
President of the trust Santhosh Nargund told presspersons here on Sunday that as part of the road expansion works, the authorities had felled huge trees without considering the damage that had caused to the environment. The trust had launched the initiative to enhance the green cover in the twin cities.
Mr. Santhosh said that the trust would be launching the initiative under the name Mission 4,000'. Various civil society organisations, environmentalists have already pledged their support to this cause.
The trust is also creating awareness on this grave environmental issue among the citizens through sessions in schools, colleges and on internet, he said.
The trust would celebrate World Environment Day on June 5 and would launch Greener Hubli-Dharwad Campaign'.
Mr. Nargund said that while the Ministry of Environment and Forestry had permitted felling of 1,200 trees to make way for the proposed four-lane road, the Divisional Forest Officer had given sanction for chopping down 1,700 trees. Going a step further, the contractor entrusted with the work has chopped down 2,633 trees, he said.
Mr. Santhosh said that the trust wanted to make up for the loss of such a large number of trees.

pavan9741650414 May 28th, 2012, 05:13 AM HUBLI: The South Western Railway (SWR) has banned the booking of transportation of two-wheelers by trains in the Hubli, Bangalore and Mysore divisions following the Hampi Express accident which claimed 25 lives.
All railway stations which fall under these three divisions have stopped booking of bikes till further orders. Sources in SWR said that officers probing how one of the coaches caught fire have found prima facie that leakage of petrol from one of the bikes being transported in the train was the reason for the fire.
Railway rules stipulate that petrol tank in a bike should be empty. GV Rathod, chief supervisor of parcel deaprtment, Hubli railway station, confirmed the ban.
An officer, on condition of anonymity, said that after the accident, teams of officers had conducted surprise raids on some trains in Hospet, Bellary, Vasco, Hubli, Bijapur, Bangalore and other stations in the three divisions and found that there was petrol in most of the bikes being transported in the trains.
Finding that some people working in parcel sections were allowing passengers to transport their bikes with some quantity of petrol, SWR has decided on the ban, said the officer.
Sources said the administrative department blamed the parcel department for the fire, while the latter claimed that they ensured that no bike had petrol in it. 'Following the order, we have stopped booking of bikes,'' said CN Gangadhar of Hospet railway station parcel department.

engineer.akash May 28th, 2012, 06:16 PM Stop dumping waste on open sites'
Create awareness on the need to keep twin cities clean, Shettar tells municipal authorities
Clean-up call:Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Jagadish Shettar speaking after launching Operation Dirty' of Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation in Hubli on Sunday.
Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj and district in-charge Jagadish Shettar has directed the municipal authorities to check the practice of dumping debris from construction sites on open sites on the outskirts of Hubli.
Mr. Shettar was addressing a gathering at Adarsh Nagar here on Sunday after formally launching Operation Dirty', an initiative of Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation aimed at cleaning up the twin cities.
Mr. Shettar said that there had been several complaints with regard to building owners and builders dumping the debris from the construction sites on the outskirts of the city. Such a practice should be checked by imposing heavy penalty on the perpetrators, he said.
Referring to the debris dumped all along the Bengeri-Sulla Road on the outskirts of Hubli, Mr. Shettar said that the dumping of debris had marred the beauty of Hubli and was giving visitors a bad impression about Hubli.
The Minister asked the municipal authorities to take immediate steps to penalise even the owners of the goods transport vehicles that were used to dump the debris.
Emphasising the need for creating awareness among the citizens to check the habit of dumping household waste and solid waste generated from shops in the drains, Mr. Shettar said he had directed the officials concerned to organise programmes to create awareness on the need to keep the twin cities clean among people at the ward level. He also asked them to ensure that the contractors entrusted with responsibility of collection and disposal of solid waste is carried out their job properly.
Concurring with him, Pralhad Joshi, MP, stressed the need for framing strict guidelines and rules while awarding tenders to the contractors.
Hubli-Dharwad Mayor Pandurang Patil sought people's cooperation for making the cleanliness drive successful. He appealed to the general public to stop dumping the waste on open sites, drains and by the roadside.
HDMC Commissioner K.V. Trilok Chandra said the HDMC had implemented zero waste management system at Navanagar near Hubli and the same would be extended to other wards in the coming days.
Deputy Mayor Bharathi Patil, councillors Rajanna Korvi, Raghavendra Ramdurg, Mahesh Burli, former Mayor Vijayanand Hosakoti and NWKTRC chairman Mallikarjun Savakar were among those present.

A press release issued by the HDMC stated that its officials have conducted a drive to remove unauthorised hoardings and banners on Friday and Saturday. As many as 30 hoardings and 280 banners of different sizes were removed during the drive from the areas including Subhas Road, Savadatti Road, P.R. Road, Karnatak College Dharwad (KCD) Road.

pavan9741650414 May 29th, 2012, 05:06 AM Many civic works that have got approval are yet to begin
Residents of the interior and low-lying areas in Dharwad have to be prepared to face problems during the monsoon season as promises to develop roads to avoid inundation after heavy rainfall have remain on paper.
After much public outcry, authorities had decided to take up development of interior roads and flood relief works under the second phase of Rs. 100-crore Chief Minister's Special Development Project. But the contractors concerned are yet to start work.
At a meeting held in Hubli recently, Deputy Commissioner Darpan Jain instructed the contractors to complete works on the interior roads before May. But work is yet to start.
Progress report
According to the progress report as on May 16, of the 17 works, only asphalting of roads in ward no. 2 is nearing completion at a cost of Rs. 77.64 lakh. Works worth Rs. 594.45 lakh are in various stages of completion and works worth Rs. 146.46 lakh are yet to begin.
The road development works worth Rs. 72.86 lakh in ward no. 1 and 2, and Rs. 62.49 lakh worth of works in ward no. 20 and the flood-relief works in low-lying Jannat Nagar have been approved but work has not started as the contractor concerned has not yet paid the security deposit.
And, for several works near Uday Hostel and other places tender process has not yet begun. Many low-lying slum areas like Jannat Nagar and Bhavikati are flooded whenever there is heavy rainfall and residents suffer because of it every monsoon. It is worrisome that works have not been taken up in these areas on priority.
The municipal officials said they have issued notices to the contractors who have delayed the works. “But the guidelines provide the contractors nine months time excluding the monsoon to complete works. The erring contractors will be fined in case they fail to complete works in the stipulated time”, they said.
However, the officials have no reply to the query on how the people who suffer because of flooding during the monsoon would be compensated.

DrYaqoob May 29th, 2012, 09:07 AM 20-bed rehabilitation centres to stem malnutrition malaise
In view of the high incidence of child malnutrition and starvation in the northern parts of the State, the government has decided to open 20-bed nutrition rehabilitation centres in all government medical college hospitals in north Karnataka.
These centres will come up in government medical college hospitals in Raichur, Bidar, Bellary, Belgaum and Hubli.

But, the company has not got the possession of land. "If the track record of the government remains so poor, new investors are not going to come. Picture is not clear in the state as far as new investment is concerned," said Mr Javali.
Industrialist Madan Desai told ET, "The government's approach toward sanctioning projects is quite discouraging. While a US-based IT company was ready to invest for developing an SEZ in Hubli, the administration's response was pathetic. The same happened in the case of sanctioning of land for companies at Aryabhata Tech Park. If the scenario is so miserable, how can we expect more from GIM 2012?" NS Infotech chief executive officer Santosh Huralikoppi stated, "Investment during the meet will be made keeping in mind Bangalore. :ohno:
But, onus will be on the government to reroute investments to tier-II cities to ensure equitable growth of the state. The region has potential to grow, but it lacks direction from the policy makers. This problem should be addressed first. Mumbai, Pune and Maharashtra-based companies are ready to invest in cities of North Karnataka."

engineer.akash May 29th, 2012, 05:17 PM Hubli railway station to get technology back-up for increasing efficiency (http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/emerging-businesses/regional-hubs/south/hubli-railway-station-to-get-technology-back-up-for-increasing-efficiency/articleshow/13642888.cms)
HUBLI: The Hubli railway station would undergo some transformational changes. At present, 95 percent trains run on time at Hubli station, which comes under the South Western Railways (SWR). This will be coupled with CCTVs, digital display boards and automated vehicle and baggage scanners. Initiatives are being taken to increase the efficiency of the operations and rising passenger load.
Ashok Kumat Mital, general manager (GM) of SWR said, "Information technology is being used extensively to provide passenger amenities by installing audio-visual enquiry at terminals, digital display boards and coach location guiding system. Amenities in railway stations are now improved". South Western Railway (SWR) has recorded significant improvement in railway operations by giving greater emphasis to safety, security, punctuality and improving passenger amenities. SWR has also managed to recover its freight earning in financial year 2011-12.
RAIL GOES HI-TECH
To ensure accident free and a secure journey, close circuit television cameras (CCTV) have been installed in 11 important railway stations such as Bangalore, Hubli, Mysore and Vasco Da Gama and door frame/man held metal detectors are provided at vulnerable stations. "An integrated security system is being introduced at Bangalore, Yashvantpur and Mysore stations and the system consists of CCTV, automatic vehicle scanner, x-ray baggage scanner, metal detectors and sniffer dogs. Important night bound trains are being escorted by RPF personnel," he added.
IMPROVED PERFORMANCE
The SWR has managed their operations skilfully and significant improvement is being seen.
"Punctuality of passenger services is at an all time high and has reached from 83 to 95 percent in the last two years. Assets like track and rolling sock are maintained judiciously and rationalisation of system has led to reduced down-time and improved performance indices. Use of other vital assents - locomotives and wagons - has been proficient, which has resulted in cost saving and high productivity," informed U Krishna Murthy, senior deputy general manager, SWR.
In order to meet the passengers' demand, additional coaches are being augmented that has lead to increased earnings. All these initiatives have paid dividend and steady growth is seen in passenger and other coach earnings.
pavan9741650414 May 29th, 2012, 05:20 PM HUBLI: With the investment promises made at Global Investors' Meet (GIM) 2010 falling flat, industrialists and industry bodies of Karnataka are sceptical about the outcome of the second edition of GIM scheduled for June 7-8, 2012. "Non-availability of land and industrial infrastructure were key bottlenecks for converting promises made in GIM-2010 into a reality.
Without addressing these issues first, any exercise by the government for fresh investments will be futile," said Basavaraj Javali, president, Belgaum Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The first edition of GIM had laid emphasis on attracting investment in core sectors like power, steel, cement in the region. As a result, leaders of these sectors like Posco India Ltd, Arcelor Mittal, Tata Metallic, Bharat Forge, and Bharat Forge had promised to invest thousands of crores to set up their plants in Gadag, Koppal, Haveri, Bellary and Bangalore districts.
But, none of their projects has taken shape in the last two years. Moreover, Arcelor Mittal has dropped the idea of investing in this region due to strict regulations on iron ore mining and Posco has not been provided any land by the government. According to government estimate, this edition of GIM is going to get investment proposal to the tune of Rs 5 lakh crore.
This estimate does not look achievable in the prevailing political situation. Industry minister Murugesh Nirani has himself conceded that prevailing political uncertainty in the state will have a negative impact on GIM 2012.
GOVERNMENT IRREGULARITIES
In Belgaum, Zuari Fertilisers and Chemicals has already deposited Rs 110 crore with Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board for 1,078 acres to set-up 11.55 MTPA fertiliser unit with an investment of Rs 4,565 crore. DrYaqoob May 30th, 2012, 02:36 PM Hubli railway station to be made hi tech
The Hubli railway station would go though some changes in order to increase its efficiency. At present, 95 percent trains run on time at Hubli station, which comes under the South Western Railways (SWR). It will be equipped with CCTVs, digital display boards and automated vehicle and baggage scanners. These amenities are being provided to increase the efficiency of the operations and increasing passenger load.
To ensure accident free and a secure journey, CCTV have been installed in 11 important railway stations such as Bangalore, Hubli, Mysore and Vasco Da Gama and door frame/man held metal detectors are provided at vulnerable stations.

GOk forgets about 1 lakh crore debt it has piled up when it comes to funds for bangalore, whenever t2 cities come up with their proposals they are turned down citing lack of funds.Mysore got JNNURM uder different class which over ruled population criterion and that was heritage category.Mysore has not got anything worthy from state govt apart from that one time 100 cr which our district authorities have gobbled up max of it.

As the railway goods shed has been shifted to Navalur now, the ring road should connect NH 218, NH 63 and NH 4 (at bypass end towards Belgaum/Belur), otherwise ring road will meet its purpose only partly.
There was a request by Shettar 2-3 years back, to extend the ring road to include the newly built goods shed at Navalur shed and connect it to bypass towards Belgaum), but you know about his relationship with BSY and also how useful, the auto dealer, Dharwad MLA Bellad is , the less I speak about him the better it is...
Out of all the gifts you have suggested, I will be happy if we achieve 20% of those listed infra projects in 1-2 years (other than statues, which I am sure will be done, before you know it) and also HD four laning including flyovers will be completed by 2015, not 2013 as suggested by DC, all IMHO.
Karnataka means Bangalore-Mysore area only, with some remaining pieces of food thrown once in a while towards NW Karnataka region and also NE region except Gulbarga city (special Thanks to Kharge), I guess.
DrYaqoob May 31st, 2012, 08:02 AM Then why Mr Mannivannan was prematurely transferred to Mysore....leaving many ambitious projects..... These projects are just on paper till now....
This is how they dont digest the development of HD.....?

Infact mysore does not get the share it ought to get.Mysore earns handsome income from tourism alone, forget the industries. One of the finest hotels are being setup in mysore owing to the growing tourism/hospitality sector in mysore region. What we get from gok are peanuts. Most of the revamp what is happening in mysore is due to Central govt aid.High time we throw this govt out.

Why was harsh gupta transferred from Mysore? He was doing a fantastic job. Most of these transfers of honest officers happen when the local legislators are not allowed to do any corrupt acts.

No point all these T2 cities must get their share from bangalore,we all have sacrificed for bangalore.GOK ambitious plan to make bangalore the hub of south India has been realized.NowT2 cities must start demanding their share from bangalore's revenue

No dear,Bangalore has no commuter rail services/local trains. While other cities get 1000cr aid on loss making commuter services.Bangalore again comes to the aid of itself or karnataka rescues bangalore.Let central govt spend the money on BMTC the only public transport in bangalore.
Bangalore's share in karnataka economy is 34% which is huge,so even our north ka netas say bangalore is the only good place in ka and build three - four houses in dollar colony.Blame the north ka mlas not Central govt Mnisters.:ohno:
jt_54321 May 31st, 2012, 08:21 AM It is a good move if they provide a connectivity to Navalur Railway Yard and Amargol - APMC from all the Highways (points).....:)
Exactly. The proposal was/is to connect APMC yard and Navalur goods shed, to the portion connecting NH 218 to NH 4. They can use the existing SH 28 (Hebsur-Byahatti-Hebballi road,) for this stretch, if they desire. Logistically speaking, it makes perfect sense. This way, a lot of the trucks don't enter the city roads.
But, but we belong to North Karnataka, you know that :(
prashanth.0619r May 31st, 2012, 08:26 AM ^^ prashanth, protests have happened for a seperate north karnataka state..
We are against it, don't want karnataka to be divided..
Nanjundappa report was submitted to GoK in 2002 to prevent regional imbalance..
But Don't know, how many of the suggested recommandations were implemented:ohno:
Do you know Tilangana issue?? Though Hydrabad is develepod city they wanted separate State... Because they feel they were not getting the basic rights that they were supposed to get. protests have happened for a seperate north karnataka state but that had to be continuous process. There is no point in protesting for a day or to.. Ask for separate state or ask for our rights that should be the MOTO and should not stop till we get one of those.

There was an agitation which even didnt allow the PM ....hope u know ....was not allowed to give speech in Hubli...Becoz....
Who himself was against the relocation of Zonal Hq of SWR....Thanks Supreme Court for making Hubli SWR Hq....
Yes Yaqoob, I agree with you. That was the only way to get our basic rights. SWR, High Court circuit bench.... We had to fight till we got them...

Don't worry it will never be divided.Karnataka needs bangalore very much, revenue from bangalore needs to be spent in various parts of karnataka,at present bangalore is the only growth engine of our state.

That is because, at the ground level itself, the govt recommends only Bangalore and sets up facilities only in/around Bangalore and provides tax benefits only if establishes the firm/office in/around Bangalore.
A couple of good examples
(1) After decades of fight for a bench oh high court in Dharwad, they set up only a circuit bench without Admin tribunal, without Industry tribunal etc... It is not even a permanent bench...
(2) The aerospace SEZ at Belgaum. Where was the need for another much bigger aerospace SEZ near Devanahalli in Bangalore

Why cant they make other cities esp.in NK as supporting growth engines like in MH...Pune,Nagpur,Aurangabad,Kolhapur,Sholapur....:bash:
engineer.akash May 31st, 2012, 08:39 AM ^^As I said,GOK's primary aim is to make bangalore the hub of south India, the moment you ask the investors to look at tier two cities in the state they will run away to the other two metro cities of south. There is intense competition between the metro cities. So GOK's one city attidtue has bombed back now,it is in hapless situation ,project bangalore and get the investments else lose it out to other states, which also have T2 cities with superior infrastructure.

Similarly keeping the Top post esp.SWR.CAO (construction) in Bangalore who is interested more towards South.....:ohno:

We are mostly agrarian in nature :) ,our T2 cities are not great industrial or manufacturing hubs like those you mentioned above. You know the status of agriculture in india.

ahmedabad and vadodara in gujarat, remember Gandhinagar is the capital of gujarat,
but Ahmedabad is bigger than Gandhinagar..
mangalore mania May 31st, 2012, 08:53 AM What our tier II cities need is good connectivity to Bangalore, Just like how Mysore got, It should be both Railway and Highway. Then only everything will be in place for what you are demanding till now.
Airports are needed for self propelled growth of the city.. But first what we need is hastle free movement of raw material, goods and labors to place of demand, supply and manufacturing..

Why Mysore is given importance is ....... becoz.....in future they want to develop the Bangalore-Mysore Corridor and decongest Bangalore....
And forget the whole Karnataka.....
mangalore mania May 31st, 2012, 08:59 AM ^^
That was a part of SM Krishna's tenure.
He gave importance to all 3 major tier II cities of Karnataka.. But bit more to Mysore i agree.
During his tenure Hubli got its IT park
Mangalore got Infosys and first 4 laned concrete road..
engineer.akash May 31st, 2012, 08:59 AM Why Mysore is given importance is .......
Not true,we have our own problems.Who is showing importance?GOK or central govt?As far as I know all JNNURM cities have revamped their infra with 80% central govt funding.20% is what state govt bears.Which mysore anyway should get owning to its tourist destination tag.

we have discussed this many times over on ssc i which yield no results apart from filling up pages.
The only conclusion i would like to make here is that, this BJP govt is shit with no vision and not a single city benefited from their governance.Get back visionary like sm krishna.

I too tell the same in last 25years, we had only one good CM and that is SM Krishna..
Thanks to these High Definition(HD) families.. They are the actual villains of Kannada Nadu..:bash:
Neither they let SM Krishna work properly nor Yedyurappa.. Yeddy had his own rival in form Reddy and Jagdish Shettar as well

Govt upgrading all the bus stands that did not happen in Cong's tenure. I think you support Cong. But is desh ka har bachcha bachcha jaanta hai ke what cong is.... Most Corrupt party compared to other's.

Dont come to political Discussions.. All parties are same..
It all matter is the leader with visions..
Yeddy was a man with some vision for state same with Krishna.. They might had their personal benefit. But they brought the state in path of growth..
mangalore mania May 31st, 2012, 09:25 AM Look guy, For Hubli and overall we say North Karnataka. Even if govt provides all facilities to the place like rail, roads, hospitals etc.. It can never come on par with Bangalore-Mangalore-Mysore to be callled as good cities.
The first thing we need is people of other cities and states should like the people of the place.
Go to any place in the country all will say people in Bangalore and Hyderabad are much friendlier than Chennai and Mumbai.
You know why because people will communicate to you in any language and don't abuse an outsider.
The same is with Mangalore
You know why people hate Kerala, Its because people are more self centred towards their language and state. Many keralites come out and do business in allover the country. But can we Enter Kerala and run our Business?? Never possible!!!
DrYaqoob May 31st, 2012, 09:30 AM Bangalore-Mangalore-Mysore to be callled as good cities......

Yes I would love to.. Improve the primary/basic education system in those places. provide good health. I dont know about other places.
If you visit Dakshina Kannada-Udupi you ll find very less people unemployed and every child goes to school,
Prevent school drop outs and avoid Child labor.
To make a good city we need to have civilized citizens.
Dont know about Mysore and Bangalore.
But I tell you all this do exists in Mangalore-Udupi
mangalore mania May 31st, 2012, 09:37 AM And yes health is very important.
When I watched previous episode of SatyaMev Jayate. I felt more proud about my city.
Health is accessed by almost every person in DK-Udupi. Every hospitals has their health card.
Recently I spoke to my maid in Bangalore. She got her daughter's cataract operated it cost her 15000/-
The same would not exceed 8000/- in any of the hospitalsin Mnagalore.
There are few with much cheaper as well.
