engineer.akash December 23rd, 2009, 09:55 AM Multiplexes may invest Rs 400 crore in 2010
Pradipta Mukherjee / Kolkata December 23, 2009, 0:49 IST
The country’s multiplex industry is likely to invest Rs 400 crore in setting up new properties, new genre movies (3D being one) and in at least two big-budget Bollywood releases lined up every month over the next one year.
Inox Leisure, on the other hand, has 29 multiplexes and 105 screens across 20 cities in India. “In 2010, we will add another 15 multiplexes and 70 screens. We will open new properties in places where we already have a presence like Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, as well as enter into new towns like Visakhapatnam, Belgaum, Hubli, Kanpur, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Bhubaneswar, among other locations,” said Alok Tandon, CEO, Inox. The company, which added four multiplexes and 20 screens till date in 2009, invests between Rs 2-2.5 crore per screen.
Tushar Dhingra, COO, Big Cinemas, is of the opinion that 3D movies would be the biggest draw for 2010. “Already, Hollywood has lined up 18 movies in 3D for release in 2010. Although, this technology would see another seven to eight years to mature, movie-goers have already accepted it,” Dhingra said.
Big Cinemas added 80 screens and around 26 properties since April 2009 till date. It currently has a total of 84 properties in India, with 12 screens showing 3D movies. Altogether, India has over 50 3D screens.

engineer.akash December 25th, 2009, 10:08 AM ^^ Krishnamoorthy that Belgaum airport is out of city limits(13 KM) you encounter one or two villages before reaching the airport,so no toilets...and yes road without a toilet is a toilet .Also world is a dustbin.
Coming to nrupathunga hill ur observations are good.Yes there is no pavements exclusively for pedestrians. On criss-crossing of trees nothing can be done coz the hill was developed much after the trees were planted/grew themselves.

engineer.akash December 25th, 2009, 06:12 PM Sudden change in shandy venue spells doom
TNN 25 December 2009, 09:45pm IST
HUBLI: Is it an end to weekly vegetable markets in Hubli-Dharwad? Is the HDMC trying to end all weekly markets to support large retail chains? On Saturday last, farmers who sell their ware every week at the market in Keshwapur and homemakers who bought there regularly were shocked to find that the market had disappeared. HDMC authorities had forced the sellers and buyers to move to Gandhiwada grounds, 2 km away.
Since most people did not know about the new arrangement, few buyers and sellers went to the grounds. The weekly fair was thus a failure. Both the sellers and buyers suffered due to this sudden shift. Sellers suffered losses as they operate by taking daily loans while buyers suffered as they could not get fresh vegetables for a week. Many of them decided to join in a protest rally against the HDMC's decision in Hubli on Thursday.
Vegetable vendors who had arrived to sell their ware in the weekly market in Heggeri Road left their baskets and walked to the HDMC office to join the rally. Homemakers from around Keshwapur also joined them.
HDMC member Nirmala Khandekar, who regularly shops at the weekly market, was understandably outraged. "HDMC officials have acted without consulting us. This mindless decision has affected every household in the northern and eastern parts of Hubli. Similarly, hundreds of villagers who travel to Hubli to sell their produce have nowhere to go now," she said.
She suspected a conspiracy to destroy the weekly markets, only to help the large retail outlets. "I am sure the HDMC officials have been bribed. Their decision is bound to destroy the livelihood of small farmers," she said.
HDMC commissioner P S Vastrad and others called for an emergency meeting to discuss the issue on Thursday. "We succeeded in convincing officials not to shift the weekly market to far-off places," Khandekar said after the meeting. She has suggested the market could be arranged in the horticulture garden in nearby Shantinagar.

An ambitious commercial project at Belgam for Mr. Mavlankar, the one lakh sq ft block is planned on a triangular plot. While maximizing the shopping line on ground with mezzanine floor, offices are provided on upper floors. Parking facilities are carefully planned out. Krishnamoorthy K December 27th, 2009, 07:34 AM BELGAUM: Tension prevailed at Londa and its surrounding villages when Kundil Sponge Iron Limited recommenced its operations on Saturday.
The villagers of Londa and the surrounding areas have been demanding the closure of the company for many years, for allegedly violating pollution norms. They even organised rallies, agitations, submitted memorandums and filed cases in the court. It is said that a court has ordered for the closure of Kundil. The villagers opine that re-opening of Kundil amounts to contempt of court.
The villagers of Londa alleged that the factory had presented a wrong picture before the local court at Khanapur after filing false cases against 20 of them.
It may be recalled that Kundil, a Goa-based company, was served a show cause notice by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) for violating the norms.
KSPCB has even filed a criminal case in the court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Khanapur, against the factory.

engineer.akash December 27th, 2009, 07:26 PM Professor sets up pet planetarium in Belgaum
Ravi Uppar, TNN 27 December 2009, 11:05pm IST
BELGAUM: Stars and astronomy are a passion with Professor C G Hukkeri, non-resident external (NRE). And to give it life, he has set up a
The planetarium was inaugurated on Friday by additional DC Vijaykumar Torgal. Hukkeri has named it the Asha Kiran Planetarium, School of Astronomy and Audio-Visual Education Research Centre, and it is the first private planetarium in India.
Setting it up was no mean task: to study the cosmos, Hukkeri designed a 40-ft wide sky dome, built at a tilt of 30 degree, for a wideangle look at wonders of the galaxy -- the stars, sun, moon, and eclipses. It is fashioned after the Birla Planetarium in Kolkata, for the comfort of the viewer.
Spread over the top two floors of his four-storey building in Ganeshpur, the planetarium needed some extraordinary architecture. The sky observatory is on the terrace, with space for research work too.
Hukkeri's planetarium is a boon for students from North Karnataka, South Maharashtra and Goa, who have difficulty visiting the Jawaharlal Nehru planetariums in Bangalore and Mumbai. The planetarium has the capacity for an audience of 120 persons.
How the dream began
Just after my wedding, I visited the Nehru Planetarium in Mumbai with my wife Mrunalini, in 1977, and ever since, we have dreamt of having our own such planetarium, Hukkeri told The Times of India.
Hukkeri was then serving as a lecturer in Belgaum. Later, he shifted to the US as geography lecturer, and also become a guest lecturer on physics and space. He invested all his life earning for this novel project, which took 12 years to complete. His son Anand, an electrical engineer, also took it upon himself to make his parents' dream true.
Dubbing programmes
Programmes for planetariums are not produced in India, and need to be brought from foreign shores and dubbed into English. "We have been planning to dub these programmes in regional languages, so that our students can easily access information," Anand said.

engineer.akash December 29th, 2009, 06:48 PM Kali river project gets a green signal
29 December 2009, 10:39pm IST
KARWAR: The much-awaited Kali river project in which the lakes of the Haliyal taluks would be filled and the river water used for irrigation project of taluk was approved by the minor irrigation department of state government, said Suneel Hegade, an MLA from Haliyal.
In a hurriedly-convened press meet at his residence on Sunday, Hegade said with this the water problems of Haliyal and Joida taluks will also be solved. He said the excess water from Kali river which joins the Arabian Sea would be used to fill the ponds and the lakes of the taluk, at the cost of Rs 117 crores.
The technical advisory committee of the minor irrigation department in its meeting had approved the project in principle, Hegade said. The committee had discussed about the equipments to be used for water supply and the technology to be used to store the water in lakes, he said. The committee has requested the finance department to release the amount required for the project he said. It would be included in the next budget he said.
He further said that the drinking water project to Haliyal, Joida and Dandeli towns too was approved.
Accepting the challenge of newly elected MLC Shrikant Ghotnekar, Hegade said he would prove his popularity in next Vidhan Sabha election. He criticized Ghotnekar for spreading the politics of hatred and said there were more than 1,800 elected representatives belonging to Congress party in local bodies of Uttar Kannda district. Ghotnekar should have secured minimum 1,500 first preference votes. But he couldn't secure even that in the last MLC election, he criticized. Local JDS leaders were present in the meeting.

7:10 PM Posted by ukmad
KalaMandir in Shukurwar Peth Tilakwadi which was built by the city corporation and is also maintained by them have decided to rebuilt it as a 4 storeyed shopping complex.
To increase the income of the corporation it has been decided that 7 sites will be converted into shopping complexes or will be used for commercial use hence getting in some money.
http://allaboutbelgaum.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/kalamandir.jpg
KalaMandir will be rebuilt as a shopping complex under the Built Operate and Transfer model. For the work to begin the proposal will have to be passed in form of a resolution in the City corporation and then the work will commence.
Recently there was a demand that KalaMandir be renamed after the Late Dr.Vishnuvardhan but it seems this has taken a back seat as the same will be broken down in time to come.

At a meeting here on Monday, he said the building would be constructed with the funds available under the special grant of Rs. 100 crore provided to the Belgaum City Corporation by the Government. The construction would facilitate organising national and international level events.
He said the Government had accorded approval to development works, including roads and drainage lines in the city worth Rs. 86.08 crore.

BANGALORE, January 13, 2009: The UPA government at the Centre has sanctioned two Regional Science Centres to Karnataka, which would be established in Mangalore and Dharwad.
As per existing scheme of Science Centres and Museums, new centres/museums are taken up where the State Government provides unencumbered land at a mutually acceptable location and agrees to bear 50 percent share of the capital cost.
According to a notification issued by the Central government, Regional Science Centre would be established at Pilikuka in Mangalore taluk. The location is just 10 km from the Mangalore city.
Both centres would be established with the contribution of funds by the Central and State governments. The cost of each centre would be Rs. 6.5 crore, according to an official press communication. Work on both centres would be completed in another two years (2011).
Another centre would be established in Dharwar, north Karnataka. Both centres would add fuel to the growth of science activities in the State. The centre at Mangalore would help a lot of students studying private and government first grade colleges in the district.
The proposal for setting up the science centres in the State was mooted by the former Chief Minister S M Krishna in 2003. The proposal could concretised for long time due to various reasons.
The Centre has decided to commence working on nine regional science centres and the list is as follows.

It was then the Dharwad MP pursued the matter and managed to get the five acre land adjacent to Rani Chennamma Stadium and available with Karnatak University. The matter was brought before the university syndicate which agreed to hand over the property.

10:50 AM Posted by ukmad
Cine goers of Belgaum are having a good time, as another multiplex is getting itself ready to welcome the cine goers.
This will be a THREE-screen multiplex and place is not new to cine goers, it is the CHANDAN cinema near head post office.
The work is currently on for modernizing the said old Chandan theatre and majority of the work is complete.
Sources told this blog that, INOX is setting up shop here, but when this blog officially contacted INOX, we did not get any reply.
INOX in its press statement earlier this month had said that in FY 2010 multiplex of Belgaum would be operational and keeping that in mind, this should be INOX.
INOX will be coming up next to Big Bazaar but due reasons unknown work did not begin there.
Therefore, Chandan would be an ideal place for people to come in as there is ample parking space and very easily accessible to all.

Cities with five-lakh population eligible
Hubli: Union Minister for Urban Development Jaipal Reddy has said that Hubli-Dharwad would be included under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) in the second phase.
Hubli Dharwad Mayor Viranna Savadi told presspersons here on Saturday that he along with Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Jagadish Shettar and MP Pralhad Joshi had met Mr. Jaipal Reddy in New Delhi on January 13. Mr. Savadi said the Union Urban Development Minister had said that it had been decided to include cities with five-lakh population as per the 2001 census under the JNNURM and there were 29 such cities in the country. There were three such cities in Karnataka and Mr. Reddy had assured them that the twin cities would be given priority.

engineer.akash January 17th, 2010, 05:42 PM Twin cities to come under the ambit of JnNURM
TNN, 17 January 2010, 09:29pm IST
HUBLI: Union minister S Jaipal Reddy has assured a delegation led by the mayor of Hubli Dharwad, Veeranna Savadi that the twin cities will be included in the JnNURM project in the next financial year.
"Reddy has assured us that all cities that have a population of five lakh or more will be brought under the scheme by next year. Mangalore, Hubli Dharwad and Belgaum have a population of more than five lakhs and we are hopeful these cities will be included,'' Savadi told reporters here on Saturday. The union minister said they will consider including 29 cities under the scheme next year.
Bangalore and Mysore are already covered under the scheme. HDMC will construct a large super market in Dharwad at the cost of around Rs 5 crore. This will have around 1,000 shops. These will be rented out to petty shop owners and to farmers who sell fresh vegetables. "If successful, we will construct similar markets in Hubli,'' Savadi said.

engineer.akash January 18th, 2010, 06:57 PM Hubli-Dharwad police commissionerate discriminated
Gururaj Jamkhandi, 18 January 2010, 10:22pm IST
DHARWAD: The much-talked-about concept, correcting regional imbalance, does not seem to be applicable to the police department. The successive
governments in the state have been talking of implementing the recommendations of Dr Nanjundappa Committee report to correct regional imbalance, but the disparities in the police set-up of northern and southern parts of the state continue.
Hubli-Dharwad, acclaimed as second capital of the state, is facing acute shortage of police personnel and repeated pleas by the successive police commissioners to the higher-ups for additional staff and other facilities have failed to yield results.
Hubli-Dharwad police commissionerate was established along with Mysore city police commissionerate on October 17, 1989. But when it came to sanctioning men and material, there was glaring disparity right from the beginning. A comparative study of the number of personnel provided to both the commissionerates prove this point.
Hubli-Dharwad city has an area of 188.71 sqkm and a population of 10 lakh whereas Mysore city has an area of 124 sqkm and a population of 8 lakh.
Hubli-Dharwad has a total sanctioned strength of 1,474 civil police personnel while Mysore has 1,611.
As far as the number of police personnel in City Armed Reserve (CAR) is concerned, Hubli-Dharwad has 399, while in Mysore the number is 710.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/hubli/-Hubli-Dharwad-police-commissionerate-discriminated/articleshow/5456874.cms
Seriously, Mysore has just got too much attention from the state govt,Hubli-Dharwad and Belgaum have been neglected.
Mysore is seriously just a cultural capital and nothing more than that but yet any person holding Mysore district in-charge position acts more or less next to CM.

Staff Correspondent
Belgaum: Minister for Youth Services and Sports Gulihatti D. Shekhar handed over a cheque for Rs. 3 crore towards construction of a synthetic track in the district stadium here on Monday.
However, the Minister parried questions on why the Government was spending such a huge amount on a leased property instead of investing same money to build a new stadium.
The Minister said the lease term would expire only after 10 years from now and the track could be used at the site till then.
Report to be sought
Mr. Shekhar said he would seek a detailed report from the Deputy Commissioner on the details of the property on which the stadium was constructed.
It is said that the land in question belonged to the KLE Society and had been leased to the Government for 50 years.

‘Government has agreed to release Rs. 50 crore for NWKRTC’
Belgaum: The Government has earmarked Rs. 1,200 crore for the overall development of small and medium towns in the State, said Minister for Water Resources and district in-charge Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday.
Addressing a function organised to lay foundation stones for various development programmes worth Rs. 5 crore in Hukkeri, he said no government in the past had facilitated as much funds for development of small and medium towns in the State as being done by the Yeddyurappa Government. The Government has earmarked Rs. 5 crore each for a town having municipality, Rs. 15 crore each for city municipalities and Rs. 2 crore each for town panchayats. The allocation of funds would ensure expeditious development and improvement of infrastructure in these towns.
“Thus, contractors and officials should make proper utilisation of these funds,” he said.
Mr. Bommai also set in process the improvement of the bus stand in Hukkeri town (taken up at an estimated cost of Rs. 50.26 lakh), development work worth Rs. 2 crore in Sankeshwar town and released five new buses.
Later, Minister for Cooperation Lakshman Savadi unveiled a stone plaque to mark the foundation stone laying for the construction of a Rani Channamma Residential School in Hukkeri town.
Chairman of North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation Mallikarjun Savarkar said the Government had agreed to release Rs. 50 crore to the corporation for improving its services in the region. The Government had provided Rs. 25 crore as per the recommendations of the Nanjundappa Committee on Redressal of Regional Imbalances.
He said the corporation had introduced 455 new buses. Another 150 buses would be introduced by the end of March, he said. Steps have been taken to cut down losses by 50 per cent this year, he added. Land damaged in parts of Raibag, Chikkodi, Athani taluks
Belgaum: The Government would be requested to provide Rs. 300 crore towards soil reclamation in parts of Raibag, Chikkodi and Athani taluks of Belgaum district which are affected by backwaters of Hippargi barrage, said R.B. Agwane, Principal Secretary, Public Works Department and Secretary in-charge of the Belgaum district.
Mr. Agwane was speaking here on Thursday after reviewing the reports on degradation of soil fertility in these taluks caused by the backwaters of Hippargi barrage with officials concerned here on Thursday. About 7,127 hectares of land under the Command Area Development Authority (Ghataprabha - Malaprabha projects) and another 27,426 hectares of land in the three taluks have been damaged due to water logging. The soil reclamation in these areas would help in taking up cultivation of commercially important agricultural and horticultural crops, he said. Soil reclamation has been taken up on large tracts of land in Bennihalla of Gadag district and Doni of Bijapur taluk at a cost of Rs. 2,5000 crore, he added.
A meeting of senior officials of irrigation and agriculture departments will be convened shortly to discuss various aspects of the problem so as to evolve proper measures to reclaim soil fertility.
In the meanwhile, Mr. Agwane informed that steps have been taken to avail Rs. 25 crore of the Rs. 53 crore required to construct 71 km stretch of Athani-Harugeri-Gurlapur-Gokak road. Also, measures are being taken to upgrade Jat-Jamboti Road.
Deputy Commissioner J. Ravishankar was present.

engineer.akash January 29th, 2010, 05:43 PM Walls of twin cities will turn aesthetic
TNN, 29 January 2010, 09:03pm IST
HUBLI: The residents of Hubli-Dharwad will get to see tourist places of Karnataka, its rich temple architecture, cultural heritage and traditions on the walls of the cities.
Taking a cue from the Bruhat Bangalore Municipal Corporation, the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation has decided to smarten up the cities by painting its walls. The intention is to curb defacement, promote state's tourist destinations and highlight its rich and vibrant culture, according to civic officials.
However, the beautification project will not cost too much for the HDMC. It will sell the space for advertisers who will get about 80% of the upper portion of the wall painted free of cost. In turn, they will get the remaining space for advertising their products. The advertisers themselves will see that no posters/ bills will be glued on the paintings.
HDMC special officer N H Naregal said the beautification project has already started in Hubli and Dharwad. "We have begun by painting the walls of HDMC-owned Lamington School in Hubli and Azad Park in Dharwad. Tenders will be invited in a few days to reflect the same elsewhere," he added.

Krishnamoorthy K February 4th, 2010, 03:39 AM HUBLI: In a measure aimed at preventing ore-laden trucks from entering the city limits, the Dharwad district administration has worked out an alternative route.
Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Jagadish Shettar along with MP Pralhad Joshi, Hubli-Dharwad Mayor Viranna Savadi, Deputy Commissioner Darpan Jain, zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer C. Shikha, HDMC Commissioner P.S. Vastrad, Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar and officials of various departments inspected the alternative route here on Wednesday. The alternative route passes through Mantur and Bhandiwad villages and connects Hubli-Sollapur Road to Pune-Bangalore National Highway (No. 4) at Bidnal from where the trucks can reach Ankola Gutti National Highway (No. 63) via Gabbur bypass and Karwar Road intersection.
Speaking to press persons after the inspection of the alternative route and the proposed bypass road that connects three national highways, Mr. Shettar said the existing road had to be strengthened and for the purpose Rs. 1 crore which had been sanctioned by the Public Works Department would be utilised. The Minister said the still more funds were required for widening and strengthening the existing road and he had asked the zilla panchayat chief executive officer submit a proposal to his department in this regard within another week. He said it would take at least six months for the road to be strengthened and then only the road would be opened for the ore laden trucks.
Bypass
Mr. Shettar said with regard to the earlier proposal of bypass road connecting three highways Rs. 8.5 crore had been sanctioned by the Centre for land acquisition following efforts by MP Pralhad Joshi.
Mr. Joshi said the 12-km bypass would be constructed by the National Highway Authority of India. He said the work would be taken up after completion of the acquisition process, which had begun. He said around 200 acres of land had to be acquired for the bypass road.

engineer.akash February 5th, 2010, 06:07 PM Contract on garbage clearance not finalized: mayor
TNN, 5 February 2010, 10:12pm IST
HUBLI: Hubli-Dhawrad mayor Veeranna Savadi on Friday tried to dispel fears among the people with respect to the cleaning contract. He said the corporation, deciding to take up integrated solid waste management, had only invited Expression of Interest and the contract has not been finalized as "alleged" by the Congress.
Speaking to reporters, he said e-tendering process will start only after the approval by the department of municipal administration and the cabinet. He said they are planning to provide the cleaning contract of all the 67 wards to a single agency as it would be easy to fix the responsibility. The agency should be able to invest around Rs 100 crore for the waste-processing unit.
The agency will take care of door-to-door garbage collection, cleaning of gutters and streets, transportation and processing of garbage in a scientific manner. Sixty-seven acres of land will be provided to set up the unit at Shivalli on the outskirts of the city, where bio mass and power generation facilities would also come up. The HDMC will invest 10% of the total cost for the unit. With no extra charges, the facility will not be a burden on the citizens.
Savadi hoped that twin cities will be much cleaner as the agency will be paid on the basis of the amount of garbage that it lifts. He said the decision of adopting integrated solid waste management is in lieu of the ministry of environment and forests' notification in view of Supreme Court order.
However, he said the decision will not go against the present civic workers as the new agency would be recruiting the same people for the job. The number of cleaning labourers will not be minimized. "We will also fix strict guidelines to them with regard to labour laws and safety," the mayor added.

engineer.akash February 6th, 2010, 10:56 AM Bhimgarh now wildlife sanctuary
Vinay Madhav, TNN, 6 February 2010, 06:44am IST
BANGALORE: A decade’s struggle has paid off. The ministry of environment and forests gave its consent to declare Bhimgadh in Belgaum district as a wildlife sanctuary. Goa is probably heaving a sigh of relief as it had locked horns with Karnataka over the Mahadayi river valley diversion project.
Bhimgadh was in the eye of a storm for two reasons. While it was a political issue between Goa and Karnataka over sharing of Mahadayi water, wildlife enthusiasts were keen on saving this unique habitat. Chief wildlife warden B K Singh confirmed that the Centre had given its consent for declaring 138 sqkm of forest as a wildlife sanctuary and the government issued the order three days ago.
UNIQUE HABITAT
Bhimgadh shelters two rare bat species — Wroughton free-tailed bats and Tomb bats. In India, Barapidi in Bhimgadh has the only colony of Wroughton free-tailed bats. Their only other habitat in the world is Brazil. Tomb bats are found in West Bengal. B K Singh said the Barapidi caves were part of the sanctuary. Wildlife enthusiast Ajay Desai said the forest was also a triangular corridor for tigers and elephants, which migrate between Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra.
MAHADAYI RIVER
State wanted water share
Bangalore: Bhimgarh, a unique habitat for two rare bat species, had been caught in a political wrangle with Goa even as wildlife enthusiasts fought to save it.
Karnataka wanted to build two check dams at Kalasa and Banduri to tap 7.5 tmcft water for supplying drinking water to Hubli-Dharwad. The project involved submerging 323 hectares of forest and the issue had been referred to the forest advisory committee for clearance.
The main Mahadayi project involved three dams at Potli, Alsara and Harinala. Karnataka argued that its catchment contributed 45 tmcft water to the Mahadayi river and over 200 tmcft of river water flowed into the sea.
Karnataka wanted a share of this water, to which Goa objected. The Goa government even favoured forming a tribunal to settle the dispute.
The issue was politically hot till 2004 during Congress rule. Subsequent coalition governments didn’t show much interest in this issue. Now, if the government wants to take it up, it has to obtain clearance under Wildlife Protection Act (1972).

Krishnamoorthy K February 10th, 2010, 04:28 PM New Delhi, Feb 10 (PTI) A unique gurukul named in memory of the doyen of Indian classical music Gangubai Hangal is likely to see the light of the day in her hometown Hubli this April.
"Almost 85 per cent of the construction work of the five-acre complex has been completed," says the late Gangubai's grandson Manoj Hangal.
The gurukul will train students under the ancient 'guru-shishya parampara'. It will also provide stipend, boarding and lodging to the students.
"The project is funded by the Karnataka government which had sanctioned Rs 5 crore for the first phase. Now the second phase of work, including an air-conditioned auditorium and museum, is in the final stage," Manoj told PTI.
According to Dharwad district commissioner Darpan Jain, a March-end deadline have been given to the authorities concerned.

Krishnamoorthy K February 12th, 2010, 05:23 AM HUBLI: General Manager of Dharwad Telecom District S.S. Sindagi has said that the entire mobile network in the telecom district would transfer to a new technology aimed at enhancing the network strength and area.
He was addressing presspersons after the formal launch of the “Any Time Payment” (ATP) facility for the customers of BSNL postpaid and landline services.
The ATP facility, set up at “Sanchar Sadan” near the railway station, would be available to customers round the clock.
Mr. Sindagi pointed out that although the telecom district had received the advanced equipment a few months ago, technical problems at Bangalore had delayed the shifting of the technology platform of the network in the region.
Mr. Sindagi said that the process of shifting of the technology platform would begin from Friday and it would take around 15 days to complete.
Once the shifting was complete, there would be an increase of one and half to two times in the coverage area and signal strength would also increase.
3G service
Mr. Sindagi said that 3G service would be launched in the telecom district by March-end and 72 towers in the telecom district would be upgraded to provide the 3G service.
He said there were already 177 mobile towers in the telecom district and 86 more towers would be set up by March 31.
Towers
Mr. Sindagi said that as many as 106 towers had been planned in the district of which 20 had already been commissioned.
He said in the next financial year, 82 more towers would be set up in the telecom district comprising Dharwad, Haveri and Gadag districts.
While 29 towers would be set up in Haveri district, 46 more would be in Gadag district and seven in Dharwad district.
Broadband Prepaid
Mr. Sindagi pointed out that BSNL had launched Broadband Prepaid services in the telecom district on Thursday.
The telecom district had also provided a computer system at the Customer Service Centre at Sanchar Sadan in Hubli from where Broadband Prepaid customers could browse the net using their login IDs.
He said the telecom district had the third highest Broadband customers (16,230 on January 31) in the State and was adding 10,000 to 15,000 new mobile customers every month.

engineer.akash February 12th, 2010, 09:55 AM Manoj I don't think H-D needs to go vertical, vertical growth is actually not a good urban lifestyle,You all must be happy that ur gifted a new layout everyday.:)
You see Mysore is well planned with broad parallel roads and is almost flat with great across winds over the city which keeps the city clean from dust and smog.
Structures are heat trap, more veritcal you go then more (surface area)heat gets trapped and is released during the nights.
Town planners insist on flat growth rather than vertical when enough land is available,H-D has enough land.
Go vertical when you have feel the space crunch.
You must be happy that you are indeed being gifted a new layout everyday, that is what I love about Hubli-Dharwad spacious layouts which is hard to see in Indian cities,Take it you all are lucky.

The rest of land can be used for industries.

engineer.akash February 18th, 2010, 06:10 PM City roads get a fresh lease of life
TNN, Feb 18, 2010, 09.43pm IST
HUBLI: The pathetic condition of city roads had been a matter of concern for the residents of Hubli-Dharwad for years. The potholed and dusty roads had brought enough disrepute to the twin cities. But all that is going to change now. With funds flowing in from different quarters, a significant number of city's main and interior roads have already got a facelift while the work on some others is underway.
Residents are heaving a sigh relief as a majority of the roads are being relaid after a gap of more than a decade. Hitherto, those living in areas close to main roads such as Gokul Road, Indi-Pump Road, etc, were keeping their windows shut, owing to the unbearable dust the pavements generated with the movement of vehicles.
The pathetic condition of the roads was even forcing the motorists take alternative routes to reach their destinations, thus putting extra pressure on good roads. People were also hesitant to settle down in residential areas like Vijayanagar, Visweshwaranagar, Adarshnagar, etc, because of the bad roads there.
Residents in extension areas were frequently staging protests demanding road repair. The authorities customarily used filled potholes as part of post-monsoon exercise, but in many cases, it did not last even for a few months.
Meanwhile, a majority of road works is taken up with the Rs 100-crore grant the HDMC has received from the government. The roads in Toravihakkal, Green Garden, Rajdhani Colony, Indi Pump-Shirur Park, Arvindnagar, Chennapet, Hosur and others in Hubli have been given a fresh lease of life. Dajibanpet, Kamaripet and Gavali Adde have got cement roads.

mandesa31 February 25th, 2010, 02:36 PM Hi, everybody,
i just joined this vibrant group that has been discussing about the developments in the twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad and Belgaum. In fact, what made me aware of this site was a YouTube video of colourful murals being painted on the wall of Lamington High School, Hubli. i had visited skyscrapercity once in a while but never knew that a group existed for Hubli-Dharwad-Belgaum. Let's thread a good future.
mandesa31 February 25th, 2010, 02:49 PM To start with, two main developments come to my mind.
1. I read recently, that the long lost Dharwad - Goa Road via Alnavar is being reconstructed by two Hyderabad based construction companies. It is said it will be a 9 metre road, i.e a two lane road with some side space from Dharwad to Ramnagar. The road from Karnataka-Border to Goa has been taken up for four laning under the National Highway Development Programme, as is the road from Ramngar to Belgaum (NH4A). This is a crucial infrastructure development, in the sense that this road will give a direct access for Dharwad to Marmgaon Port. And who knows, it may have a favourable bearing on Dharwad emerging as the secondary auto hub.
2. There was a DNA newspaper report that Hero-Honda has zeroed in on Dharwad for setting up of their new Rs 2000 cr automobile plant in South India. Though, the Karnataka Government is saying yes, there is no confirmation yet from Hero Honda, but it looks very likely.
(And BTW, mandesa31 is Manish Desai. My home town is Dharwad, but am currently based in Mumbai.)

engineer.akash February 25th, 2010, 05:43 PM Minister gives earful to BCC officials again
TNN, Feb 25, 2010, 09.25pm IST
BELGAUM: Urban development minister Suresh Kumar on Tuesday gave another round of earful to Belgaum City Corporation (BCC) officials over slow pace and substandard quality work in executing projects taken up under Rs 100-crore special development grant.
While the latest reprimand was made through a video conference from Bangalore, the earlier one - over the same issue - was given during his visit to the city two months ago.
The officials, who have not openly explained to the minister their problems in executing the works, say Kumar was intentionally targetting them. According to them, the minister is aware of the fact that the works were delayed due to political intervention.
During video conference, the minister took exception to the laxity of officials in completing only 18 of the 277 works by spending only Rs 10 crore. They had also not submitted an action plan for the remaining amount of Rs 19.29 crore even after a year.
According to a senior officer, the work was under progress with normal pace. "But the project commenced after a delay of nearly a year due to political hiccups. The work did not commence for two months after the project was handed over to contractor in October 2009 due to rain, and hence the delay," he said.
The officer said in the last two-and-a-half months, 18 works have been completed while 90 other works worth Rs 44.88 croe are under progress. The remaining 169 works are small and the contractor has time till July to complete them, he added.
While the ministry is putting pressure on officials to submit an action plan for the remaining Rs 19.29 crore, the latter are facing political hurdles to do the same. Minister and chairman of grant monitoring committee Basavaraj, Bommai, has put on hold a decision on submitting the plan after Belgaum rural MLA Sanjay Patil demanded Rs 7-crore grant for three wards coming under his constituency.

Hubli-Dharwad rocks
Krishnamoorthy K February 26th, 2010, 04:23 AM Another version:
* Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Commissioner’s fund created; Rs. 6 cr. to be raised from solid waste management
* Tax officer to help increase revenue collection
* Opposition partiers term budget unrealistic
HUBLI: Chairman of the Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation’s (HDMC) Standing Committee of Tax, Finance and Appeals Pandurang Patil presented an annual budget (2010-2011) with a surplus of Rs. 1.15 crore here on Thursday.
While the corporation is expecting a revenue of Rs. 305.39 crore from various sources, its expenditure estimate has been put at Rs. 304.23 crore resulting in a surplus of Rs. 1.15 crore.
Proposals
A Mayor’s fund of Rs. 1 crore, Deputy Mayor’s fund of Rs. 75 lakh and Commissioner’s fund of Rs. 2 crore, decision to levy fees for door-to-door collection of solid waste, revision of building permission fees, introduction of parking fees at important junctions, development of small playgrounds in various residential areas, setting up of two mobile clinics in twin cities and setting up of a planning cell are some of the budget proposals.
Dr. Pandurang Patil said that the corporation was expecting a revenue of Rs. 24.50 crore from property tax, Rs. 1 crore from advertisement tax, Rs. 1.78 crore from various fines and Rs. 15 lakh from cess on motor vehicles.
He said the corporation was also expecting a revenue of Rs. 1 crore from fees towards building permission and completion certificates and Rs. 6 crore as development fee and Rs. 85 lakh as regularisation fee.
Grants
Dr. Patil said that the corporation was expecting grants of Rs. 6.50 crore for maintenance of streetlights and Rs. 18.72 crore towards power charges for drinking water supply.
Similarly, a grant of Rs. 1.80 crore was expected from the State Finance Commission. While Rs. 1 crore had been released for the development of Aryabhata IT Park in Hubli, another additional grant of Rs. 1 crore was being expected, he said.
Tax
Dr. Patil said that an official of Assistant Commissioner cadre would be deputed to the office of Revenue Officer as tax officer mainly to help increase revenue collection in the twin cities especially with regard to property tax.
He said the objective was to bring all buildings in the twin cities under the tax net, by updating the property tax registers regularly. It would be verified by the Commissioner on a monthly basis.
Repair, maintenance
He said Rs. 5.08 crore had been set aside for the repair of main roads in the twin cities, Rs. 1.51 crore for the maintenance of drains and Rs. 1.20 crore for underground drainage system. Apart from these, Rs. 23 crore had been set aside for development of roads, Rs. 2.85 crore for the construction of public buildings and Rs. 1.10 crore for the construction of pavements.
Dr. Patil said that Rs. 4.60 crore would be utilised for implementing a comprehensive underground drainage system during the financial year 2010-11. A grant of Rs. 160.75 crore was expected from the assistance extended under the North Karnataka Infrastructure Development Programme, he said.
He said the corporation had to planned to repay loan and interest of Rs. 1.88 crore during the financial year and thereby it would be clearing the loan taken for road development under the “Rs. 30-crore Road Development Project”.
Unrealistic
Leader of the Opposition in the council Deepak Chinchore termed the budget a “numbers game” which was unrealistic. He told presspersons that the budget had not taken into consideration the actual position with regard to revenue collection.
“Although there has been no direct mention of increase in tax, the corporation plans to raise Rs. 6 crore as charges for solid waste management, which is nothing but another cess,” he said.
Janata Dal (Secular) councillor Rajanna Koravi concurred with Mr. Chinchore saying that the budget was not realistic. He said there had been no mention about providing drinking water to new residential layouts.

Ajay and Krishnamoorthy I was referring to this type of median where you can allow some space on the medians for the shrubs.
Lets wait for the Mangalore airport road to be completed, then we can compare the two.
Hope HDMC lays the footpath as early as possible, then this would look ultimate as most of the land around the airport road is owned by the commercial estate owners.

engineer.akash March 5th, 2010, 06:41 PM Farmers opposing land acquisition arrested
TNN, Mar 5, 2010, 10.47pm IST
DHARWAD: Over 100 farmers from Bellary district were arrested at Hubli railway station on Friday morning for violating the prohibitory orders clamped in the city.
The farmers had come from Bellary to protest the acquisition of their lands at Sirwar for the construction of airport. They wanted to stage a demonstration in front of the regional office of Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) here.
After arriving at Hubli railway station, the farmers started raising slogans, and the police arrested them while they were getting ready to move in a procession towards KIADB office. They were later taken to District Armed Reserve headquarters in Dharwad.
Meanwhile, police continued to patrol the twin cities intensively on Friday, a day after Hubli-Dharwad celebrated Holi. Though there were tense moments during Holi, the police managed to pacify the youths and let the celebrations go on. Police commissioner Raghavendra Auradker told `The Times of India' that co-operation from the leaders of all communities and efficient handling of the situation by an alert police force ensured peaceful Holi.

Vincent D'Souza, TNN, Mar 5, 2010, 10.49pm IST
HUBLI: Barring Rs 50 crore for upgrading the road between Hubli-Dharwad and a few small projects, no big announcements have been made for twin cities in state budget 2010-11 presented on Friday.
The people of Hubli-Dharwad were demanding a ring road to keep the iron ore-laden trucks off the city limits, flyovers and underpasses in congested areas, a special grant of Rs 100 crore for developing interior roads among others.
But chief minister B S Yeddyurappa seems to have overlooked these demands in spite of his promising to look into them, during the recent pre-budget meeting held here.
Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) chairman M C Hiremath said the budget has been disappointing for NK region. Bangalore has been rained with funds for improving infrastructure while Hubli-Dharwad continue to be neglected even this time, he added.
However, Yeddyurappa has been kind enough to provide Rs 10 crore towards developing infrastructure in the newly started Karnataka State Law University in Hubli. Apart from this, he has announced the setting up of a branch of Kidwai Institute of Oncology here at a cost of Rs 5 crore. The staff-starved Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissionerate will get Rs 2 crore.
The loss-making North West Road Transport Corporation and North East Road Transport Corporation will each get Rs 25 crore for infrastructure development. Rs 3 crore has been given for the construction of Artisans' Bhavan in Hubli.
BELLARY GETS LION'S SHARE IN NK
True to the influence they wield in the corridors of power, the Reddy brothers have managed to get much for their home district of Bellary. Projects worth close to Rs 100 crore has been announced for the district. Building a theme park at the world heritage site of Hampi tops the list with the allocation of Rs 50 crore for it.
With private participation, a super-speciality hospital will come up on the premises of Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences in Bellary. It has been given Rs 10 crore.
This apart, Vijayanagara University will be established in Bellary and the same has been given Rs 10 crore. The Kannanda University at Hampi will get Rs 5 crore for the development of infrastructure. Rs 5 crore has also been allocated for the upgradation of Ayurveda hospital in Bellary.
HI-TECH RICE PARK IN KOPPAL
A hi-tech rice technology park will come up at Karatagi in Gangavathi taluk. State Marketing Federation will invest Rs 10 crore for the purpose. Rs 5 crore each has been given towards the establishment of horticulture colleges in Sirsi and Koppal. A veterinary college will come up at Athani, for which Rs 5 crore has been set aside.
BRIDGES ACROSS 2 RIVERS
Bridges will be constructed at Harihar and Honnali taluks across Tungabhadra River at a cost of Rs 30 crore. Rs 15 crore will also be provided for the construction of a bridge across Krishna River in Bijapur district.
Belgaum, Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag, Gulbarga and Bidar districts will be benefited by the Rs 40 crore project provided for construction of 37 tanks under Centrally assisted Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme.
FUNDS FOR YADGIR
The newly carved district of Yadgir will get Rs 25 crore for the improvement of infrastructure facilities in its headquarters. Rs 2 crore will be provided for the construction of a stadium at Yadgir. Funds have also been allocated for district office complexes in Yadgir and Bellary districts.
RS 10 CR FOR WORLD KANNADA MEET
Rs 10 crore will be provided for the World Kannada Conference to be held in Belgaum during 2010-11. The construction of Kannada Samskruthi Bhavan at Belgaum will get Rs 2 crore. Cold storage units will come up at Gulbarga and Belgaum.
KUMARAVYASA MEMORIAL
Rs 3 crore will be provided for the construction of Sahitya Bhavan at Gadag and Rs 1 crore will be provided for the constructing a memorial at Koliwada, the birthplace of poet Kumaravyasa.
FUNDS FOR AUTHORITIES
Kaginele Development Authority will get Rs 10 crore while Kudalasangama Development Authority and Basava Kalyana Development Authority will each get Rs 5 crore for the completion of development works undertaken there. Rs 2 crore will be provided for the development of Dattatreya Peetha of Devalagangapura in Gulbarga.
SHIFTING OF PRISONS
The budget has proposed for the shifting of district prisons from the city limits in Dharwad, Raichur, Bidar, Bellary and Davanagere among others.
Rs 5 CR FOR PALI STUDY CENTRE
Rs 5 crore has been given to set up a study centre for Pali language in Gulbarga University. Women's University at Bijapur and Davanagere University will each get Rs 10 crore for their development. Gulbarga will get a synthetic track for holding athletic meets along with Mysore and Shimoga at a cost of Rs 5 crore.
FLIGHTS FOR BIDAR AIRPORT
Yeddyurappa has promised to take steps towards making Bidar airport operational with domestic flights. Central and north parts of the state will be benefited largely with the budget providing Rs 600 crore towards various projects of the railway department.

Disappointing budget for Hubli-Dharwad cities. :(
jt_54321 March 6th, 2010, 09:04 AM <<Jt any idea about the 12 floored golden heights project at Hubli??>>
I don't know much about Golden heights project.
About the budget :
IMHO, the entire North Karanataka (apart from Bellary/Koppal, which I think they deserve), got nothing worth thanking the BJP govt.
The Hubli-Dharwad four-laning is a 140 cr project. The amount sanctioned 50 cr is okay, only if the remaining amount is going to be released in phases. Otherwise it is a big let down.
HD people have been begging (yes, begging) for additional 100 cr for development, as it has a population of close to 10 lakhs (almost double of Belgaum, Mangalore and more than double of Shimoga, Bellary etc...) But nothing was done...
I may be wrong here, the facade of 50% sharing of railway projects is mainly to facilitate projects in/around Shimoga. Three critical Railway projects for the state are
(1) Bangalore/hassan - Mangalore route
(2) Tumkur-Davangere route
(3) Belgaum-Dharwad route...
Rest all are are pandering to the local constituencies... Again, IMO
When it comes to Hubli-Dharwad-Belgaum, a lot of projects announced earlier are yet to take off. What is the point in announcing the projects, when even half of them never start... My only hope now is JNNURM project for the Hubli-Dharwad and Belgaum cities.

engineer.akash March 6th, 2010, 09:54 AM I have always dreamt of seeing Hubli-Dharwad & Belgaum as the next growth engine of karnataka, but the govt does not seem to bother and has not marketed these cities well.
Belgaum once was the backbone of pune's auto industry, after recession it has hit the industry hard, govt must ensure to develop an Auto hub along Hubli-Dharwad-Belgaum.
After all H-D is poised to become the centre for the worlds largest bus manufacturing plant once TATA Marco polo second unit goes on stream.

After all H-D is poised to become the centre for the worlds largest bus manufacturing plant once TATA Marco polo second unit goes on stream.
IMO, these new units like TATA-Marco Polo in Dharwad or Quest aero space SEZ in Belgaum, don't really add much to the cities.
Projects like
(a) establishment of institutes like a new IIT and/or IISc second campus
(b) 4 laning of entire Hubli-Dharwad NH4 stretch, till it reaches bypass on both ends (It comes to about 30 km)
(c) 4 laning Belgaum-Khanapur road, (Work has already started on this?)
(d) Drinking water supply on a daily basis, reliable electricity supply round the year, proper city-wide drainage etc.. plus many more like this
(e) IMO, Belgaum would have benefited more if the new Assembly hall was at Vaccine depot?? ((I am ready to change my opinion, due to factors like congestion, if Belgaum people feel so) etc...
Got-2-go. more later...

Braving scorching heat, hundreds of people including children and women are thronging the Unkal lake to take part in the thrilling events.
The five-day festival is organised by State Youth Affairs and Sports Department in association with General Timmaiah National Academy of Adventure Sports and the district administration.
According to organisers over 1200 people were being trained in water sports as part of the festival. About 30 instructors from the academy and the Sports Department have been training and guiding people taking part in adventure water sports in the lake.
Facilities and equipment have been made available for taking part in sports like rafting, water scooter, canoeing, carole ride, kayaking, water-skiing and wind surfing.
Before taking up an exhilarating ride on water, life-saving jackets will be given to the each person as a precautionary measure.
Shabbir, the team leader of trainers at the festival told Express that allaying fear about water among people, particularly the youths, is the aim behind organising the event. We have already organised the adventure water sports festival in Karwar, Mangalore, Davangere, Manglore, Udupi and Hassan. We are also planning to organise it in other cities where there are lakes, he said.
Many youths at the venue said that they were thrilled to take part in water sports for the first time.

engineer.akash March 20th, 2010, 01:18 PM Multiplexes may invest Rs 400 crore in 2010
Pradipta Mukherjee / Kolkata December 23, 2009, 0:49 IST
The country’s multiplex industry is likely to invest Rs 400 crore in setting up new properties, new genre movies (3D being one) and in at least two big-budget Bollywood releases lined up every month over the next one year.
At present, there are about 250 multiplexes in India and close to 900 screens. The industry is expected to see an addition of 40-50 new properties and 150-200 new screens in 2010 due to the fading recession, point out multiplex chains. Multiplexes invest Rs 2 crore per screen on an average. Thus, according to experts, the total investment next year on additional screens is estimated at Rs 400 crore.
But, 2009 was a far different story. Over 100 films were released in the year, but hits were few and far between. In addition, multiplex chains slowed down expansion too. Recession, producer-multiplex strike, and a string of box office flops led to 2009 being one of the worst years for the multiplex industry. The two-month-long stand-off between producers-distributors and multiplex owners over revenue sharing, which was resolved on June 5, led to a whopping Rs 300-crore loss to the Hindi film industry alone.
“The industry went through a few glitches at the beginning of this year. But, after June, there has been an upsurge in consumer spending and overall sentiment. The outlook for next year, too, is positive and, with recession fading, more properties would be able to open on time,” said Rishi Negi, CEO, Fame Cinemas.
Fame Cinemas would add six new multiplexes in 2010 and 24-30 new screens. The company spends Rs 70,000-Rs 1 lakh per seat. Each screen has around 300-350 seats. Currently, the company has 23 multiplexes and 93 screens.
Altogether, India has over 50 3D screens.

engineer.akash March 27th, 2010, 12:15 PM PAGES FROM HISTORY: GANDHIJI IN BELGAUM CONGRESS SESSION
By Prof. A.V. Narasimha Murthy, former Head, Department of Ancient History & Archaeology, University of Mysore.
Belgaum, the corrupt form of the name Belagamvi, ancient Venugrama is often in the news for political reasons. It is not our intention here to discuss this vexed problem. From the excavations conducted here and hundreds of Kannada stone records found here, it has been established beyond doubt that Belgaum was a part of Karnataka ruled by Kannada dynasties like Kadambas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Devagiri Yadavas, Vijayanagara kings and the Bahamani Sultans.
Subsequently it became the headquarters of the chiefs of Desai family. Kittur Rani Chennamma who heralded the flag of revolt against the British with associates like Sangolli Rayanna, is still in the memory of Kannada speaking people. The British made it a district under Maharashtra State. As per the re-organisation of States, the district became a part of Karnataka. Thus except for a short period of less than 100 years when it was under the Marathas, remaining 1,900 years it was under the direct control of Karnataka Kings. This fact cannot be ignored or erased out of the minds of Kannadigas. With the idea of pleasing the people of Belgaum, the government of Karnataka has been spending crores of rupees for the development activities there. This is politics. Thus Belgaum is in news.
Congress session
But Belagum made news in 1924 for a worthy and laudable reason and that is Gandhiji presided over the Congress session held at Belgaum. In fact this is the only Congress session Gandhiji presided in its long history. The entire country was burning with the idea of Indian independence from the yoke of the British. At this time, a group of people enthused by the ideals of Congress decided to hold a session at the town of Belgaum. Gangadhara Rao Deshpande was the real force under this move and he had ability to collect funds for this session, and make proper arrangements for Tilak, Gandhiji and others.
'Congress well'
Arrangements were going on in full swing at Belgaum. Roads were repaired. As there was scarcity of water, the Municipality excavated a huge well for good drinking water. It was called Pampa Sarovara. In course of time it came to be called 'Congress Well.' The venue of the Congress was named Vijayanagara.
Khadi hut
Thousands of people assembled at Belgaum to have a glimpse of Mahatma Gandhi. Most of the houses carried a name plate requesting the visitors to stay in their houses as free guests. That was the enthusiasm of the local people. All rich people and the members of Desai royal family requested Gangadhar Rao Deshpande to permit any one of the them to have Mahat-maji as their guest. But Desh-pande did not accept their offer.
Gandhiji had made a special request for a hut made of Khadi cloth. Actually when Gandhi arrived at this Khadi hut, he was surprised and he told in a firm voice, 'I had asked for a simple Khadi hut but you have insulted me by giving a Khadi palace wasting lot of money which could have been donated to the Congress fund.' Then Gangadhar Rao explained that the cost of the Khadi hut was just Rs. 350 and the same has been auctioned for Rs. 250 and naturally the expense for the hut is just Rs. 100. Gandhiji felt happy at this.
New Railway Station
The Belgaum Railway Station was a bit far away from the venue of the session. This was a disadvantage to the delegates. Then the Southern Maratha Railway company made a temporary Railway Station near the venue and Gandhiji who came by train got down at this station.
Udayavagali
The most important day (24-12-1924) arrived. Gandhiji was shown the programme list. He observed that welcome address by Gangadhar Rao Deshpande had been given 15 minutes' time. Gandhiji said, 'Your speech is good; it has already been printed. You distribute this in advance either free of cost or at a small price. I want you to give its summary in Kannada language in just five minutes. Gandhiji did not suggest Marathi or English or Hindi but Kannada.
Gandhiji's speech was also sold to the audience and this fetched Rs. 1000. Gandhiji then spoke in Hindi for just ten minutes. Gandhiji's message was not to waste time on formal speeches. Before he left his hut for the function, he prayed for 15 minutes. Then Gandhiji was brought to the dais. The programme started with an invocation by no less a person than Huyilagol Narayana Rao who sang the famous song Udayavagali Cheluva Kannadanadu' for the first time. This enthralled not only the audience but inspired lakhs of people all over Kannada speaking areas, for the past one hundred years.
10 minutes speech
Gangadhar Rao Desp-hande finished his welcome address in 5 minutes. Gandhiji spoke in Hindi for ten minutes. He said 'I do not want to waste your and my time by making a long speech. I want you to follow the weaving through Charaka (wheel). Charaka is a means to go closer to independence. That can mitigate our poverty. Gandhiji referred to the misunderstanding between the reactionaries and progressives and said as our goals are same, both should work in unison. He also called upon the Hindus and Muslims to live together harmoniously.
Finally he praised Basavanna's teachings and referred to him as a great savant and a good reformer. Gandhiji said that he would be happy to follow Basavanna's teachings. Thus ended the Belgaum Congress session and it attracted the attention at the all India level. It gave a great boost to the freedom movement in Karnataka.
Gandhiji preached the unity of the country irrespective of the religion, province, language and other considerations. But unfortunately we have forgotten all these moral values and Belagum has become a place for linguistic disharmony.

engineer.akash March 28th, 2010, 09:42 AM Karnataka okays Rs 735-cr drinking water project
Nagesh Prabhu
Bangalore, March 25
The Karnataka Government has decided to extend the 24x7 water supply scheme from a few select wards to the entire city corporations of Hubli-Dharwad, Belgaum and Gulbarga.
After the successful execution of the continuous water supply project in 27 wards of three city corporations, the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) has prepared a proposal to scale up the project to all wards of three civic bodies, at an estimated cost of Rs 735 crore.
A pilot 24x7 water supply scheme project, which was aided by the World Bank, was executed in 27 wards of three city corporations at a cost of Rs 237 crore.
Private funding
Mr Arvind Shrivastava, Managing Director, KUIDFC, said that the State Government had approved the Rs 735 crore project, which will be implemented on a public-private partnership (PPP) model in three city corporations.
The investment by a private operator in the project would be 50 per cent (Rs 367 crore), Central Government funds under the Viability Gap Funding would be 20 per cent (Rs 147 crore), State Government contribution would be 20 per cent (Rs 147 crore), and urban local body contribution would be 10 per cent (Rs 73 crore).
“The selection of a consultant for preparation of detailed project reports and transaction support is in process,” Mr Shrivastava said.
The consultant will suggest names of private operators best suited to invest in the project. The project is expected to be commenced within the next one year, he said.
On the lines of a Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC), a Water Council would be set up to provide recommendations for improving the water supply system in the project as well as non-project areas, Mr Shrivastava said.
KUIDFC officials said water supply will be augmented in Hubli-Dharwad City Corporation by drawing water from Malaprabha river, while water to Belgaum city will be drawn from Ghataprabha river.
Water will be supplied from Bheema and Bennethora rivers to residents of the Gulbarga City Corporation. At present, water is available for one to two hours, every three or four days, in these cities. The project will focus on physical investments in the system, and strengthening of institutions for service delivery.
The latter, which is crucial, is aimed at improving information systems, benchmarking services, pricing services to recover the cost of operations and management, and putting in place other measures designed to improve the performance of the public sector.
French firm involved
The reforms covered the municipal corporations, the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWSDB) and KUIDFC.
Under the project, meters will be installed in households and tariffs will be fixed based on the consumption of water.

The total cost of the project was Rs. 5 crore, he said, after inspecting the work along with Deputy Commissioner Darpan Jain on Sunday.
The Minister said that to ensure proper maintenance of the park, an entrance fee would be charged. The Minister said the survey for the development of a four-lane road between Hubli and Dharwad was complete.
Project fund
While the Union Government had sanctioned Rs. 100 crore for the project, the State had allocated only Rs. 50 crore in its recent budget. Work would begin once the modalities were completed, he said.
Mr. Shettar also inspected work on the Link road between Indi Pump and Unakal that was taken up with the assistance of the Union Government under the Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns.
Delays
He said that because of encroachment, work had been delayed on certain stretches.
The Minister said that three acres were available with the Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation at Heggeri and this would be utilised to develop an indoor stadium.TheHindu (http://www.hindu.com/2010/03/30/stories/2010033054510300.htm)

HUBLI: In an effort to streamline the traffic and remove bottlenecks, the Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissionerate had declared several important and busy junctions in the twin cities as `no-parking' zones.
But strangely, the situation is back to square one, just a few months after enforcing the new rule. For example, no-parking signs were erected on both sides of PB Road, stretching from Hosur Circle to Basava Vana Circle. Also, a police constable was posted on the spot to ensure that the rule was followed.
Things were fine, but only in the beginning. Now, with the police withdrawing the cop posted there, the situation has just turned worse. Traffic jams have become order of the day on the stretch leading KC Circle, the heart of the city. Two- and four-wheelers are parked on both sides of the road, making it completely difficulty for the passers-by. The presence of large number of automobile spare parts shops there has added to the mess.
The situation is no different in front of HDFC Bank near Court Circle. The presence of a number of banks and offices on the narrow stretch makes it difficult for motorists to pass through from the junction. Many motorists park their vehicles, blissfully ignoring the `no-parking' signs put up there. Because of a bus stop there, many vehicles pile up, up to the traffic signal near Court Circle. The unauthorized autorickshaw stand at the busy junction is another impediment for the free flow of traffic.
The situation is no different in other downtown areas like Circuit House Road, Dajibanpet, Kamaripet and Old Hubli areas, through which the Pune-Bangalore Road passes. Some of the streets in Dajibanpet and Kamaripet are so narrow that it is difficult for four-wheelers moving in opposite directions to pass through together. In spite of such a situation, people don't mind parking their vehicles in a haphazard manner.
M K Patil, a resident of Deshpandenagar, blames the police for this. "The police introduce one rule or the other whenever some problem arises. But within a few weeks or months of monitoring, they completely forget it, which makes the problem bounce back," he adds.
However, DCP Batakurki said they are strictly implementing the rule by slapping fines on violators. TOI (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/hubli/Traffic-problems-worsen-in-Hubli/articleshow/5739983.cms)

DHARWAD: Dharwad will have a Block Education Office exclusively for the city. The new office, located on PUE department premises, opposite RN Shetty stadium complex, will be functional from April 2. Education officer Girish Padaki will be the Block Education Officer (BEO) for Dharwad city.
With this, the long-pending demand for a separate Block Education Office in Dharwad will be fulfilled. Hitherto, there was only one BEO for the twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad while the office was in Hubli. The primary and high schools in Dharwad were to approach the BEO office in Hubli for their administrative works like getting the salary bills of the staff passed. Primary schoolteachers, in the absence of a clerk, were forced to double up as clerks and visit Hubli office for such works. This was affecting the academic activities in the schools besides being a financial burden on the teachers.
Responding to the plea by teachers and parents, primary and secondary education minister Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri had promised a separate BEO for Dharwad.
The BEO in Hubli will look after 281 schools coming under Hubli division of HDMC, while the Dharwad one will have 161 schools functioning in Dharwad division of HDMC.

HAVERI: Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa said the central government has agreed to provide Rs 4,600 crore to the state for implementing National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) during 2010-11. This would enable farmers to build check-dams, canals and bunds to their fields.
Addressing mediapersons at Mannur village near Haveri on Wednesday, the CM said the state government has spent Rs 2.350 crore in 2009-10 and Rs 357 crore in 2008-09 under the scheme.
The state has witnessed the worst-ever floods last year, because of which 305 villages were badly affected and five lakh houses were inundated. "The government will construct 70,000 houses for the flood victims," he added.
Ruling out the formation of Saint Sarvajna Development Authority, Yeddyurappa said the government will develop Abalur, the birthplace of saint-poet Sarvajna, without forming an authority for the purpose.
The CM said he will participate in Global Investors' Roadshow scheduled for April 1 in Mumbai to invite the participants for the Global Investors' Meet to be held in Bangalore on June 6 and 7.
Replying to a question on the steps being taken by the government to arrest the culprits who attacked miner Tappan Ganesh on Monday, the CM said he has directed the DGP to arrest the attackers within 24 hours. "The police have seized one car and investigations are on," he added.

prashantd April 1st, 2010, 04:31 AM HUBLI: The Mayor of Hubli-Dharwad, Venkatesh Mestri, has warned contractors against poor quality work.
After making his first speech in the council meeting of the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation as Mayor, Mr. Mestri was reacting to comments from the council members on his maiden speech.
He said that he had begun inspecting the various development works in the twin cities. Any contractor found turning out substandard work would be dealt with severely, he said.
The Mayor assured that at least another 18 wards would be brought under the 24 x 7 water supply project within a year's time. Subsequently, the project would be extended to all the wards. Also, measures would be taken to streamline the existing water supply cycle, he said.
Responding to the concerns of the council members, especially those belonging to the Opposition parties, he promised them that the grants for development works would be distributed evenly among all the wards.
Earlier, , Mr. Mestri listed out his priorities as Mayor.
He said the corporation had received Rs. 152 crore for the Rs. 350-crore round-the-clock water supply project in all the wards of Hubli-Dharwad. He would initiate measures with the help of the council members to get the remaining amount released and implement the work in a phased manner.
Making comments on the speech of the Mayor, council members of the Opposition parties, including Leader of the Opposition Ganesh Tagargunti, Hazrat Ali Doddmani, Rajannava Koravi, Deepak Chinchore, Altaf Kittur, Vijayalakshmi Luthimath and Ashok Jadhav expressed displeasure over the functioning of the officials of the water board.
They urged the Mayor to focus mainly on streamlining the existing water supply cycle especially in areas where the frequency was once in 10 days.
At one point of time there was a heated discussion between the members of the ruling party and the Opposition members when Mr. Deepak Chinchore termed the Mayor's speech as just a repetition of the budget speech.
The former Mayor, Viranna Savadi, defended Mr. Mestri's speech and said that there was progress with regard to improving the water distribution network and suggested that an immediate meeting of the water board officials and council members was convened to address the problem.Hindu (http://www.hindu.com/2010/04/01/stories/2010040150880300.htm)

The 385-metre civic road that connects NH-4 shot into fame after a local medical practitioner Dr Mrityunjay C Sindhur insured it for an amount of Rs 2 lakh in August 2007. While Sindhur himself paid the annual premium for the first two years, a group of nine citizens located on the pathway joined him in sharing the premium amount of the third year for an assured sum of Rs 6 lakh.
Sindhur said henceforth the same procedure will be followed to pay the premium. He said that many residents were individually ready to bear the whole insurance premium. "But later, it was decided to distribute the responsibility as it would help spread a strong message about private participation. It will also make the residents treat the road as theirs," he said. This initiative entered Limca Book of records in 2007.
He said the residents' initiative, however small, helps protect the public road. "But it will go a long way in inculcating civic sense among the residents and help reduce some part of financial burden on the government..." he added.
The residents here also want people elsewhere in the city to take a cue from them. "We hope that the HDMC will make efforts in this regard for the well-being of its roads which will save lot of funds. Recognitions such as this (India Book of Records or Limca Book of Records) should encourage people's participation in public work," he said.
"For me it has become a movement and I want this message to go everywhere. All corporations must follow this to save crores on road repairs," Sindhur said, adding the methodology is simple consisting of the insurance company inspecting the quality of the road before signing of papers and the claims going directly to the civic bodies. He has also started a blog www.insuredroad.blogspot.com to propagate the movement. kingfisher09 April 9th, 2010, 04:06 PM Thank you for all the pictures on this thread. Having spent my entire childhood in Hubli and completed all my education in Hubli it can be safely said that Hubli is still in my heart, though my last trip there was in early 1998.
Hubli during my earlier days there had a nice smal town feel. Roads were lined with trees, we used to have 24 hrs water supply and never faced any power outages. By the time I moved out of Hubli in '92 things were already getting bad. The worst thing I feel about Hubli is the traffic sense, nobody wants to follow the road rules there.
Speaking to a few school friends who have been to Hubli in the near past, they have mentioned that Hubli has lost all it's charm. In the name of development trees are chopped down everywhere, roads are horrible, water supply is bad, electricity is bad. :ohno:
I really wish Hubli can be brought back to its past glory.

BELGAUM: Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa on Monday said the government is mulling over giving second capital status to Belgaum. He was speaking to reporters after inspecting the ongoing construction work of Suvarna Vidhana Soudha here. A decision in this regard will be taken shortly, he added.
Yeddyurappa said most of the government offices working in the city would be shifted to the Soudha once its construction is over.
The first announcement from the government that Belgaum would be the second capital of Karnataka was made during the legislature session in Belgaum in Sept 2006. Under the JD(S)-BJP regime, then chief minister H D Kumaraswamy indicated the government’s intention, which was later not taken forward.
On Monday, the CM’s announcement of Rs 100 crore for the district was also a move to reiterate that claim and hasten the infrastructure development for the winter legislature session to be held there. The government plans to hold the winter session in the yet-to-be-constructed Suvarna Vidhana Soudha.

Krishnamoorthy K April 13th, 2010, 06:38 AM What gave credence to this thinking of the state government is an appeal made by the seers of various Lingayat mutts, particularly the head of Shivayogamandir, Sri Sanganabasava Swamiji. Addressing a session on ayurvedic medicine and its status in the present context, he said instead of setting up a music university in Mysore the government should select Badami or Shivayogamadir located on the picturesque environs of Malaprabha river.
In 1909 Hanagal Kumaraswamiji realized the importance of music and encouraged seers being trained here in Lingayat philosophy to learn and excel in classical music, he said, recollecting the efforts of Hangal Kumaraswamiji in establishing Punyashrama at Gadag led by late Panchakshri Gavai. It was Hangal Kumarsawamiji who picked up Panchaakshri Gavai, born blind and taught him the nuances of classical music, he pointed out to claim support for shifting the university from Mysore to Shivayogamandir. But for the efforts of Kumarswamiji, Gadag punyashrama would have not come into existence, he said.
In addition to this, the readiness of ministers Jagadish Shettar and Sriramulu to provide land for the proposed university seems to have spurred the seers attending the five-day centenary celebrations of Veerashaiava Mahasabha and Shivayogamandir to demand the government to change its decision.

Many roads are being widened in Namma Belgaum city and the obvious victims are trees, cannot help we need development at any cost.
Prathyaksh Shetty April 14th, 2010, 11:46 AM akash:
cutting trees is unavoidable, but the widening should not be done at the cost footpaths. also, mere widening of the roads doesn't solve the problems. it's only a short term solution. within 4-5 years it ll return to its present condition- congested. but all the political parties are worried about providing only a short term solutions so that the credit is not claimed by the next govt. pity!

I think traffic regulation also has its part to play.If you see Delhi corporation (NDMC) they have come up with an innovative idea of having a Tree Ambulance while here we are bent upon axing them in the name of road widening.
I do agree that cutting trees is inevitable if one wants Road infrastructure, but here what does development (road) exactly mean to us?? Widening roads by conveniently forgetting pedestrians??
Our city officials must work on the lines NDMC.

The only long term solution to the traffic chaos is promoting public transport and discouraging private ones. sooner we realise this, the better.
