Hubli airport to be upgraded to international standards

May 7, 2012 | Posted by Bureau

The project for upgradation of the Hubli Airport to international standards which has been on hold for the last seven years due to problems related to land acquisition, is finally back on track, and is now scheduled to be completed in the next two years. This follows the allotment of 600 acres of land by the state government to Airport Authority of India (AAI) to start the expansion project.

The AAI has floated tenders for executing the first phase, which includes a facelift for the roads and highways. According to airport officials around 90% of the work on mapping a boundary of the airport has been completed and construction of a boundary wall measuring 9.5 km is expected to be completed by December.

Alongside this, expansion of the terminal building to accommodate 300 passengers, control tower and canopy is also being taken up, while plans to extend the runway from its present 4,500 ft to 7,500 ft and eventually 10,000 ft facilitate landing of large aircraft and cargo planes have also been drawn up.

Advanced navigation facilities such as voice communication switching system (VCSS), Doppler very high frequency omnidirectional range, discover video multimedia encoder and other digital airport service equipment are being installed.

Global TiE members mentor Hubli firms

The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) global mentors have arrived in Hubli to help kindle entrepreneurial spirit.

The Hubli chapter of TiE held ‘Biz Plan Presentation’ session which provided opportunity to three local companies – Sankalp Semiconductors, Nextgen Album and Spandana Copper Conductors to present their plans.

The session was chaired by Gururaj Deshpande (‘Desh’ Deshpande) an Indian American venture capitalist.

Addressing entrepreneurs, Deshpande said, “One should make use of TiE Network effectively to learn from successful entrepreneurs. The network works as a resource centre for the local entrepreneurs to utilise and build their organization.”

Hemang Dave, a venture capitalist shared his entrepreneurial journey and VC experience. He said India is the right place to start the business at present.

“The only difference between entrepreneurs and ordinary people is that the entrepreneur implements the idea and converts it into a business, while ordinary people just spend time by thinking on the ideas. Entrepreneurial journey is hard for both genders and it is not gender oriented,” he added.

Others who are part of the mentoring are Sushil Vachani, professor of strategy and innovation at Boston University’s School of Management and Raj Melville, an executive director at the Deshpande Foundation, who develops overall strategy, and channels the efforts to encourage innovation.

On the theme ‘Current business: How to scale up,’ business plan presentations were made by Prabhat Aggarwal of Sankalp Semiconductors. Vijay Mane of Nextgen Album Designs and Prasant Yadav of Spandana Copper Conductors spoke about the company’s challenges in Hubli.

According to Naveen Jha, president of TiE Hubli Chapter and CEO of Deshpande Foundation, India, the objective of holding the event is to provide opportunity with the objective of stimulating and nourishing entrepreneurial spirit in small towns.

The entrepreneurs have mentored many start-ups to grow aggressively in their respective sectors and all are very active in various TiE chapters globally, he added.

Tata Motors targets 50% share in luxury buses by 2015

Tata Motors hopes to sell at least half of total super luxury inter-city buses sold in India by 2015, helped by its Divo buses it has started selling in India.

Divo will directly compete with the multinational giants Volvo and Mercedes in this segment.

700-800 inter-city super luxury buses are sold in India each year and Volvo is the dominant player here with 50-60% share.

Tata Motors’ Divo made with its Spanish subsidiary Hispano Carrocera, is priced at Rs 66 lakh ex-showroom. Thane, which is at the lower-end of the segment. And that coupled with features like on board refrigerator, better fuel efficiency, will help it trump rivals, Tata Motors hopes.

It has already sold around 20 Divo buses and hopes to sell 150 in the first year.

It has a pipeline to sell 25-50 Divo buses currently, Ashish Tandon, Head – Marketing – Buses said.

The highway development happening across India should help the segment grow in more than double digits in the long run, he said.

This year, however, heavy duty bus sales have been flat due to a decline in orders by state transport undertakings.

Tata Motors will also launch multi-axle Divo in fiscal 2014, which should further boost sales, Tandon feels.

Tata Motors on Wednesday also launched an intra-city Star Bus Ultra priced in Rs 15-22 lakh range. This intra-city bus segment is expected to grow 10-15% per year, officials said.

Meanwhile, Tata Motors continues to see strong growth in its Ace family of small trrucks, especially the 0.5 tonne Zip.

It will start rolling out SCVs from the Dharwad plant in Karnataka from next month, Ravi Pisharody President – CV business said.

The Dharwad plant has a capacity to produce 90,000 units per year.

It is also increasing the capacity at its Pant Nagar plant to 40,000 units per month by next quarter from around 33,000 now, Pisharody said.

Hubli monorail gets a boost
(http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/article3805742.ece)

As per requirement, it should cover 60 km in the twin cities

After Jagadish Shettar took over as Chief Minister of the State, there are lots of expectations from the people of the twin cities regarding various development projects.

Going by the way things are progressing, there seems to be at least few reasons for residents of Hubli-Dharwad to feel happy. It may be recalled that the State Cabinet had approved the Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) project to be funded by the World Bank.

In July, the administration mooted a monorail project for the twin cities and there is a positive development in this regard.

On Tuesday, a team from the Chennai regional office of Engineering Projects (India) Limited (EPI), visited Hubli and held discussions with the Chairman and officials of the Hubli-Dharwad Urban Development Authority (HDUDA).

Chairman of HDUDA Lingaraj Patil told The Hindu that a two-member team led by K.G. Ranganathan, Additional General Manager of EPI at Chennai, held a preliminary round of discussions with them on the monorail project.

“We gave them our connectivity requirements. It comes to around four-five routes in Hubli connecting old KSRTC bus-station, Durgad Bail, Siddharoodh Math, Airport Road in Hubli, and five to six routes connecting Karnatak University, University of Agricultural Sciences, city bus-station, railway station, and Kelageri in Dharwad,” Mr. Patil said.

“Considering the fact that BRTS had already been approved by the government, we told them that we may need a connecting route as well. They told us that the land required for the project would not be much and that they would return to study the feasibility,” Mr. Patil added.

Mr. Ranganathan told The Hindu that apart from other infrastructure projects in the twin cities, HDUDA was interested in the monorail project. “According to requirements they have given, the monorail project would have to cover a distance of 60 km in the twin cities. We have taken their requirements. I will have to consult the senior officials concerned on the issue,” he said.

Mr. Patil said that the team would be returning to Hubli for further study.

(http://prajavani.net/include/story.php?news=94114&section=117&menuid=10)

HUBLI: People of Chauhan Plat in Priyadarshini colony's at 6th cross here are living in a pathetic condition with no basic amenities in their area for decade.

The HDMC authorities have not taken any measure to improve the roads and proper gutters since many years. People have to wade through knee deep waters whenever it rains as water gets clogged in absence of gutters and good road system. The inside roads are also in a bad condition with no proper tarring on roads.

Despite nestled between residential colonies , the area is closer to Hubli Airport on Gokul road. Many people have built their houses in the area with most residents being officers, businessmen, retired people and others. However, the area has not seen any improvement.

Speaking to TOI, G S Viraktamath, resident of Priyadarshini colony, said: "During the rainy season, it is very hard to travel on the roads. All roads get filled with water in the absence of gutters in the area. However, after laying UGD, the roads aren't repaired."

Due to the bad mud roads and the rainy season it is tough to walk in this road. Even though it is dusty during the summer season, residents are tired of complaining to the authorities hoping to seek a solution.

S N Dugadi, resident of Priyadarshini colony, said that in the absence of gutters, the drain water flows and creates inconvenience to the pedestrians. "It is tough to walk on the road for old aged people and children. Motorists are using alternative roads due to the bad condition of this road," Dugadi said.

Beautiful view..........Thanks Prashanth for the pics.....:)

Nice pictures prashant, but in almost pictures of hubli I see either dust or wires from electric poles spoiling the beauty of the city.
There was a proposal long back in KEB to lay underground electric cables/wires in Hubli. What happened to it? Also, HDMC should make sideways of roads grassy by growing grass so that no dust pollutes buildings and air of Hubli.

Dharwad land losers get compensation

BANGALORE: Land losers in Dharwad, chief minister Jagadish Shettar’s home district, for industrial purpose will get an ex-gratia amount. Though this had been due for a long time to owners of 87 acres of land, acquired for Tata Motors, the cabinet on Thursday approved Rs 2 lakh per acre. The proposal, reportedly piloted by Shettar, was approved despite dissent notes by the finance and revenue departments. “It’s based on the Shimoga model. The company will pay the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board which will disburse the amount to farmers,” industries minister Murugesh R Nirani said. Tata Motors has agreed to pay an additional Rs 1.76 crore towards the ex-gratia amount. KIADB acquired 504 acres,

Karnataka DC dept gets 42 HPLC & other lab equipments under WB-funded scheme to bolster drug testing capability

The Karnataka drugs control department has received 42 High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) under a World Bank funded Karnataka Health System Development and Reform Project (KHSD&RP) assistance which is estimated at Rs.6 crore.

In addition to the HPLC, the drugs control department has also received a total of four lab equipments covering UV Spectrometry, water purifier and dissolution test apparatus.

“The range of new equipment will now bolster our testing capability as we will be able to analyse more number of samples and be able to deliver the assessment reports of not-of-standard quality drugs at a faster pace,” Dr BR Jagashetty, drugs controller, Government of Karnataka told Pharmabiz.

As part of the 42 HPLC installation initiative by the global medical device major Shimadzu Corporation under the Karnataka Health System Development and Reform Project, a team of 42 senior and junior scientific officers from Karnataka drug test lab will now be trained at Singapore. The training will be carried out in batches of four or five officers and this is a major boost for the drugs test services in the state, said Dr Jagashetty.

The equipment will be installed at the three drug test labs located at Bengaluru, Hubli and Bellary, he said.

Meanwhile the state drugs control department is also awaiting the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) certification for its lab in Bengaluru as the audit is complete. Efforts are also on to augment the Hubli and Bellary drug test labs in terms of furbishing of infrastructure. “We had already invested Rs.25 crore for the labs at Hubli and Bellary and now we would require an additional Rs.9.5 crore for which a proposal has been sent to department of health and family welfare and the final clearance is awaited from the state finance department. We will then work towards NABL certification for the two labs too,” said Dr Jagashetty.

With the modernization of the labs, there would be need for the qualified and trained personnel. The state government has now approved the selection of 59 junior scientific officers out of the sanctioned 114 posts for the drug test labs in the state. However a shortage of 30 officers would still continue, said the Karnataka drugs controller.

Hi-tech police Training School Work will stars Soon

It will take time, with chances of congress govt returning to power next elections looking bleak and moreover the country is facing dire economic crisis along with mid term elections hanging around the neck.Under such circumstances don't expect this largesse to happen any soon. Not to forget there would be n such other cities lobbying for JNNURM inclusion, this is aalso subjected to parliament debate and approval wil take a hell lot of time.

Hope Jagadish shettar trims the funds available for bangalore and divert the same to Hubli-Dharwad-belgaum region.

Relaunched Gateway hotel woos patrons with health food

The Gateway hotel on Residency Road in Bangalore has been relaunched. Company officials say they are trying to offer healthful food to attract more patrons.

“The concept of health foods will be present across the Gateway brand,” said P.K. Mohankumar, chief operating officer, Gateway Hotels.

He said this was being done because hotels are now increasingly getting branded. “How do you brand a hotel? After the rooms, food is the soul of a hotel,” he said.

The menu is focussed on the preferences of modern Indians who have experience with both domestic and foreign travel. “They are high achievers with high energy levels. They are also very conscious about what they eat,” said Mohankumar.

Gateway, a Tata company, is a part of The Indian Hotels Company, which owns brands such as the Taj and Vivanta. While some properties carry the Taj name prominently (like The Taj West End in Bangalore), Vivanta is branded as ‘by Taj.’ Gateway does not associate itself directly with the Taj brand and just states that it is a Tata company.

When asked if the rebranding has been detrimental, Mohankumar said that on the contrary, the rebranding has been good for growth.

“Our top line has gone up by 30 per cent on a year-on-year basis for the last three years. Customer satisfaction has also gone up from 30 per cent to 60 per cent in the same period,” he said.

Gateway, which has 21 operational hotels across India, has 23 more upcoming hotels. In the current fiscal, it plans to open new hotels in Kolkata, Chennai and Hubli, with hotels in Faridabad, Raipur and another hotel in Bangalore slated for FY 2013-14.

HUBLI: People of Kotiling Nagar and Shambhagi Layout in the city are living in abysmal condition in the absence of basic amenities like proper roads and streetlights in the area.

Choked gutters overflow during rain, so people are at a loss to differentiate between a road and a gutter. Once they step out of their houses, they have to wade through knee-deep water. Even a small rain fills potholes on the roads, making it risky for people to use the roads.

Both the areas are close to Hubli Airport on Gokul road. Many people have built their houses here, residents being officers, businessmen and teachers among others. However, the area has not seen any improvement for years.

Speaking to TOI, Parashuram Habib, a businessman of Kotiling Nagar said life becomes miserable for residents during rain due to mud roads and big potholes. Though the residents, through Kotiling Nagar Hitabhivruddi Sangha, has submitted memoranda to the authorities, no action has been taken to relieve residents of their miseries.

Padma Tavanappanavar of Shambhagi colony said that the drain water flows on the roads in the absence of gutters and the corporation has not yet provided any roads and gutters to the area for more than a decade.

HUBLI: Drunk, and at the wheel? Not a problem if you are in the twin cities. Though law says drunken driving is a punishable offence, the police department in Hubli and Dharwad does not have adequate number of breathalyzers to enforce the law. So, drunk drivers often go scot-free.

The department has about 17 breathalyzers, of which only three are in working condition. With the rest in need of repairs, police are finding it difficult to book cases against offenders.

Of the three breathalyzers, one is being used in Dharwad, while two are in Hubli -- one in north traffic police station and another in south traffic police station. For the twin cities with a changing culturescape, where socializing and partying are slowly catching up, police are abysmally armed to prevent tipplers from driving and eventually causing accidents.

According to police sources, they are facing difficulties in booking cases against drunk drivers.

"We keep an eye on people driving in inebriated state. But when we stop them for checking, we have to take them all the way to either Keshwapur or Hubli where breathalyzer is available. There will be a long queue there, making it a messy affair during night hours," said a police officer who did not wish to be named. "Since we are not adequately armed, we often let them go," he said.

On one hand, this inadequacy is leading to offenders escaping from the clutches of law. On the other, it is often causing a great deal of inconvenience to innocent people too. For instance, Ramesh Kumar (name changed), a resident of Old Hubli, was stopped by police near MTS Mill on Karwar Road. "They took me on my bike to Koppikar Road where police were registering drunk and drive cases using breathalyzers. I had to wait till my turn came. After testing they imposed fine on me. This exercise took more than half an hour," he said.

Tata Motors sets aside land for combat vehicles in Karnataka

MUMBAI, AUG. 27:
Tata Motors has set aside 16 acres exclusively for its Futuristic Infantry Combat Vehicles (FICV) project at Dharwad, Karnataka.

The combat vehicles, leveraged from the strength in design and development of a wide range of commercial vehicles, has enabled the company to cover the entire defence mobility spectrum.

The new unit is to have a capacity of 200 vehicles a year.

The company is to invest around Rs 600 crore for the development of the combat vehicles and to set up the manufacturing plant.

“Though a lot of work has already gone into developmental activities for the FICV at Pune, we are hopeful to commence project development at our Dharwad facility soon.

“We have dedicated funds for the FICV project,” said a spokesperson of Tata Motors.

Revenue from the defence business was about Rs 1,000 crore in 2011-12, up 50 per cent over the last year.

Tata Motors is looking at 25-35 per cent growth in the current fiscal.

The knowledge and experience gained through the developmental projects has inspired Tata Motors to become a full-fledged Defence OEM in Land Systems with ‘System and System Integration’ (SOSI) capability.

“This was one of the reasons for Tata Motors to bid for the FICV project.

“We are one among four companies to have received expression of interest (EOI) to supply around 2,000 units of indigenous infantry combat vehicles,” the official added.

With defence requirements on the rise in several States, especially in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, MP and Maharashtra, the need for armoured vehicles by the CRPF and other Central paramilitary forces has also precipitated.

Demand from J&K and North Eastern States has also increased.

Tata Motors is striving to serve the need through the supply of Light Armoured Troop Carriers, Light Bullet Proof Vehicles and Mine Protected Vehicles.

Tata Motors current market share in the wheeled military segment is approximately 40 per cent, and in the internal security is 75 per cent.

“We work very closely with the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) on the potential needs of the forces,” said the spokesperson.

The company is also in the exploratory stage of entering the West Asian market for its defence vehicles.

Twin cities come under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission

HUBLI: Union urban development ministry has finally included the twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad in the second phase of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM).

HUBLI: An increasing burden of electricity bills has prompted the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) to consider replacing all streetlights with CFLs.

The HDMC pays an electricity bill of Rs 8 crore annually.

The twin cities have more than 40,000 streetlights. The HDMC hopes to save about 40% energy and Rs 3 crore in electricity bills by using CFLs and LED lamps. After getting a nod from Hescom engineers, the HDMC will replace incandescent bulbs with CFLs and LED lamps.

HDMC now uses tubelights, sodium vapour lamps, mercury vapour lamps, high-mast installations and other bulbs for illumination.

The HDMC has held meetings with engineers and electrical department professors regarding installation of CFL lamps.

They all have welcomed the move, and are preparing reports about the benefits of adopting energy-saving lighting. Hescom is finalizing reports to be submitted to HDMC, according to a source.

Satish Phatke, HDMC executive engineer, told TOI: "The HDMC is considering replacing existing bulbs with energy-efficient lamps. We are waiting for reports from Hescom. We will finalize the project once we receive them."

HDMC engineers say the energy-saving initiative can be started as a pilot project in some part of the twin cities. "We can can extend the project to all the 67 wards of Hubli-Dharwad after studying its benefits."

UAS-Dharwad gets Rs 16 cr funding for 33 projects (http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/industry-and-economy/agri-biz/article3828293.ece)

HUBLI, AUG. 27:
The University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, (UAS-D) has received a funding of Rs 16 crore for 33 new projects.

According to R. R. Hinchinal, Vice-Chancellor of the university, “These are new ad-hoc projects for which we have got external funding through private participation.”

The university also has collaborated projects with many international organisations like McGill University, Canada; Cornell University of US, Pro-agro Ltd for research on cotton; multiplex for bio-fertilizer; BARC, Mumbai, Vishweshwaraya Industrial Trade Centre (VITC), Bangalore, JK Agri Agencies, Hyderabad, Watershed Development, Bangalore, for human resource development.

Hinchinal said during 2011-12, about 1.02 lakh quintal seeds of various categories (nucleus, foundation breeder and certified) in important crops have been produced.

“We have set a target to produce 1.5 lakh quintals of seeds for the rabi season. The university stood first in the country in seed production. Last year, the varsity’s seed centre produced 1.02 lakh quintals of seeds and 6.12 lakh horticultural crop saplings,” he added.

Because of the drought in the region, the demand for seeds would grow next year. Hence, the varsity had set the target of producing 1.5 lakh quintals of seeds and 7.5 lakh horticultural saplings this year, he explained.

KRISHI MELA

The UAS-D, in collaboration with Karnataka agriculture department and horticulture department, is organising Krishi Mela - 2012 and International Agriculture Fair from September 22-25.

“The mela is an annual event in our university calendar, this year we aim to focus on educating farmers on drought management. Demonstrations on integrated systems for sustainable livelihood and exhibitions would be arranged for farmers,” said Hinchinal.

Nearly 10 lakh farm families including, farm women, extension personnel and self help groups, are expected to participate in the mela.

He said UAS had evolved some successful models of dry land agriculture, organic farming, watershed development and rainwater harvesting, nutrient management which they intend to unveil to farmers during the mela.

The mela also has dedicated agricultural exhibitions, fruit and flower shows, farm equipment and organic farming exhibitions, sale of seeds.

As followed every year, UAS-D has instituted a ‘Best Young Farmer’ and ‘Best Young Farm Woman’ awards. These awards have been instituted to encourage youth to engage in agriculture.
