View Full Version : Resort town of Druskininkai | Druskininkai - miestas-kurortas

Druskininkai is, probably the richest and most developed town in Lithuania. With only ~20.000 inhabitants, it sure has quite some interesting projects.

While it was known and visited for couple of centuries, due to it's mineral springs, the town is now diversifying it's menu of activities offered.

Add to the restored old ones, at least a few highest class SPA hotels were opened in the last couple of years, biggest water park in Baltic states, towns streets and parks were reconstructed and refurbished, numerous private villas and a number of apartment buildings were built. They, however, differ from others in Baltic states due to quality of architecture.

Now, the active municipality of town, has plans on:

one of the biggest indoor skiing complexs in Europe,
a new golf course
sports complex meeting all the highest FIFA and IAF standards
Reconstruction of Airport
New bridge over Nemunas river
A movie theater and a 900 seat concert hall
Numerous other projects...

.......................................................................................................

Just a few projects:

Apartment complex, u/c

Architects: A. Ambrasas, S. Kuncevicius and a bunch of others...

Reconstruction of Airport and construction of new facilities around it

Will be able to serve airplanes of up to 70 passengers. There is a demand for it, as geography of the incoming tourists is expanding to west, and few enjoy driving a car or a bus on polish roads.

Indoor skiing complex

Includes an ice rink and bobsleigh track

~50 mln euros

60 ha Golf course

Architect - Johan Benestam - a swedish architect, mostly famous for his golf course built for Donald Trump in New Jersey.

Bridge over Nemunas river

130 meters long and 13 meters wide car/bicycle/pedestrian bridge over one of the longest rivers in EE.

Druskininkai? Target audience are Belorussian tourists or something?

Big Cat
December 9th, 2008, 12:33 PM
Because of a geographical position there always were tourists from Belorussia. Moreover, Belorussia has its one sanatorium there. There also were tourists from Russia and Ukraine, cause Druskininkai resort town was famous in Soviet times - it was very popular at those times between russians, ukrainians, belorussians and so on.

But because of Schengen agreement and EU there are some difficulties with visas for them, so Druskininkai now started targeting Poland, Latvia and Estonia, as well. Numbers of tourist from these countries are growing each year.

Moreover, Druskininkai decided to target Nordic tourists. So these projects are specifically designed to attract international tourists and to make Druskininkai a regional resort :)

I'd choose Druskininkai over Palanga any day. There's just more stuff to do there. Palanga is crowded with annoying, loud villagers and the only good thing about that town is the sea. Its OK for a stag weekend or if you just want to get drunk, but there's nothing to do over there, especially if the whether is bad.

Well, the A4 road Vilnius - Druskininkai is is of excellent quality and the distance is much shorter, so it depends on which city we're talking about.

Yes, but this is not why indoor skiing resorts are built. They are biuld because they can provide skiing facilities all year long, without any distractions, which is 4 times! longer then usual skiing resort. Moreover, nobody around provides such a services other then a winter time- that reduces competition a lot. Also when there is such a heat outside, many people would pay a lot just to get to the winter for few hours... and if you can ski there- what might be better. If planning a holidays in advance, there's no need to worry that there might be no snow when the holidays starts. There's lots of advantage, but as I said the main advantage is working all year long.

If there are no similar establishments withing a 100 or so km radius in Poland then I guess it's got a good future. I think Druskininkai is becoming by far the best SPA and recreational resort place in Lithuania or even the surrounding region.

But no, the Royal palace is not finished and won't be in the nearest time. The exterior is more or less done but there is a substantial amount of work left to be done.

Is it true that Poles in north-eastern voivodeships (where millions of them live without a single kilometre of motorway (or any other decent road)) get their parcels delivered by pigeons because there is no road access to them? Or do they drop those parcels from an airplane, like in a war zone?

If there was a union based on road adequacy, you would be in the same union with Cambodia and Nepal. You could call that union "Union of Countries where Roads are really Shit". At the same time you could be in a union with Romania. You could call that union "Union of dense countries that have 5 kilometres of EU-built motorways and who keep posting pictures from the same motorway over and over again".

But no, Poland isn't such a bad place. I love the liberal advertising market. I have just made an amulet from a dead cat's tooth, I am selling it for $3.00. I think I will advertise on the S8 in the outskirts of Warsaw. I will make a 5 square meter half-green, half-pink advert with orange letters (where font doesn't match in different words) and put it there, among millions of similar adverts.

Yes, "Kantors" are behind the Polish economic miracle, the Poles just need to start spending the dosh on things that matter (motorways for example) instead of wasting them on silly enquiries (Are Teletubbies gay?).

Neither I am a Polophobe. I love Poland and I buy Polish beer quite often (what else could better define my appreciation of Poland ;)). However, for your information, roads in Poland are something like 20 years behind Lithuania. If you call those 70km/h repaved roads "European style" where you have to constantly race with your life against heavy trucks and sick drivers, then I feel sorry. Thank god we can go to Germany via sea ferry. :D

Too bad local Poles can't afford to use those few kilometres (you are a 40 million nation for God's sake!) EU-built motorways as they are too expensive for them. Those motorways are built by Europeans so that Europeans could bypass Polish villages without encountering 3 lines of Polish trucks coming towards them in a two lane road like you get near Suwalki, Augustaw and other towns.

Oh, and well done on doing so well during the crisis. While we were rearranging our economy to a hi-tech one and getting high transitional unemployment and temporary large drop in GDP, you were employing people in industries that export apples and beetroots due to flexible exchange rate of the zloty. That's the plan! Poland - the future beetroot capital of the world! We'll settle with the humble title of a hi-tech nation. Our internet infrastructure is already 20 years ahead of yours. Good luck in writing your reply on your 56k modem.

To be honest, this whole Poland-bashing started off as a joke and now it turned into a real flame war. I wrote those harsh things with a smile on my face just to piss the Poles off, thinking that it is still a joke, but now that I read it I realise that it does sound very harsh and most people are taking it seriously :D

If I said that I hate Poland I would be lying. Poland and Lithuania both suck equally to me and I really don't differentiate between the two much. If you read my comments in Lithuanian forums, you'd see that there are far harsher things that I say about Lithuania. In fact, there are dozens and dozens of things that I hate about Lithuania, many of which Poland doesn't have.

These flame wars aren't funny to me any more, and I am not going to pretend that I am a very angry person who cares about these issues a lot, because I simply don't. I was only writing all that stuff to piss the Poles off, just like I do with the Estonians sometimes.

And by the way, as far as Druskienniki/Druskininkai is concerned, did they manage to set up this statue of Pilsudski (the place being one of his favourite retreats). There was so much controversy surrounding the idea. Many thanks if somebody can give an update on this.

You can transform eight out of ten most popular Lithuanian surnames this way, so it doesn't really say much. His surname is officially Malinauskas, not Malinowski though. And everybody hates Pilsudski in Lithuania, so the fact that Mr. Malinowski (if that's the spelling that you prefer) had a temporary brain dysfunction (never heard of this anyway) doesn't really mean much in the real world.

In this thread or in reality? In reality, Russians would be in Vilnius in 6 hours (from Belarus), and in Kaunas in one day (from Kaliningrad Oblast), in order to "protect the population"; Poles would seize some towns just across the border, maybe reaching the old border of Kongresowka. Within 3 days, independent Lithuania is no more.

Well, I have no intentions of getting into any silly arguments either. What I am trying to say is that (rightly or wrongly) Pilsudski is not seen as a national hero in Lithuania. To give you an idea, imagine I said that I heard somewhere that Warsaw is considering building a monument to Stalin. What would you think? You would think that I am insane. Nobody was planning to build a monument to Pilsudski anywhere in Lithuania ever. I can guarantee you that.

Yes there was an idea to build a monument (not a proper statue) to Pilsudski in a newly reconstructed park in Druskininkai. The arguments expressed by the Mayor seem logical to me. After all, Druskininkai is frequented by tourists from Poland which could make it an even more popular place among Polish visitors. The latest media articles are dated August 2010 and there hasn't been anything since then. The idea by the mayor was to build a plaque or memorial near a house where Pilsudski used to stay. According to the mayor Malinauskas he was going to submit an application to the city council but like I said there hasn't been any news about the status of it. It is a brave and nice idea but I guess it would get stuck because of the image Pilsudski has/had in Lithuania.

They were going to put a stone there on which they were going to say that Pilsudski used to live there and come there. Kind of similar to the little plate on the town hall building that says that Bush was there and said his speech. Malinauskas himself emphasised in his proposal that "this is definitely not to be confused with a monument". Even this idea of a simple, neutral stone got very negative reactions. Would I be against such stone? Definitely not, I couldn't care less. If it attracts Polish tourists then fine, go ahead. Will it ever be put in place? I don't think so. Would I be against a monument to Pilsudski? If it attracts tourists then fine, go ahead. Will it ever be built or will anyone ever even consider it? Not in a thousand years. Pilsudski's image in Lithuania is far too negative and he is usually portrayed in a negative light.

Interesting Latvian article about the snow arena, I found today (google translate, helped me to understand, what they were talking about :okay:

Druskininkai Ski Resort! (http://www.chas.lv/win/2011/02/11/g_031.html?r=32)

Lithuanian Druskininkai, famous since the Soviet times for its mineral waters and muds, is undergoing a rebirth.

Sergei KNIAZEV

Now residents of the neighboring Latvia will be able to come back not only on treatment but also for sports entertainment in April will be put into operation a complex of winter entertainment Snoras Snow arena, where year-round skiers and snowboarders can enjoy their favorite hobby.

In the world today there are only about fifty ski resorts where skiing is possible year round. But coming to Latvia under Moscow and in Germany, and Lithuania will be, firstly, to enter the top five similar complexes, and secondly, will become for us a neighbor. Until located in southern Lithuania Druskininkai can be reached in four hours by car, but you can use the aircraft, flying from Riga to Vilnius or Kaunas.

During the construction had been adopted to best practices from other countries, taking into account all past mistakes and use the latest technology. As a result, an area of 8 hectares, surrounded by pine trees (by the way, within a radius of 70 km there is no industrial facility) Snoras Snow arena will provide the most demanding gourmets in the field of entertainment whatever they wish. At the same time under one roof, at least in the winter, even in the summer 1000, visitors can indulge in all kinds of winter fun: skiing, sledding, snowboarding, children may simply frolic in the snow, and in the future to skate, play hockey, and in a moment of respite, guests can enjoy a massage and fragrant tea in the evening have fun in the snow restaurant. In addition to the closed year-round route will operate and open ski run, headquartered in the natural landscape. A year-round snowboard park will be constructed of the best European firm for the construction of snow parks, forming the same park at the famous ski resorts.

And it's not all. The closed zone snowy arena interior is designed so that it appears that rises in the street mountain town somewhere in Austria, with which you get on this hill. Almost indistinguishable from the real snow, which will produce the latest German cars, will only strengthen the sense of reality. Finally, the entertainment center will operate five lifts: four-, and three rope belt, so that visitors to the complex will not have to stand in queues. It is expected that within a year he was visited by nearly 400,000 visitors.

It is obvious that building such a grandiose project, the total value of which over 28 million euros have been impossible to attract private investment. But Druskininkai municipality failed to attract significant amounts of EU funds. Mayor of Druskininkai Ricardas Malinauskas, thinking visionary, no doubt that the decision to build complex, offers winter fun all year round, was right: "The ability to combine both winter and summer fun will increase the attractiveness and competitiveness of tourism is not only the spa town of Druskininkai, but the whole of Lithuania .

In Snoras Snow arena built three routes for beginners and professionals.

All-weather track: width 50 m length over 460 m;

Trail for beginners: the width of 70 m length over 150 m.

Seasonal trail: width 40 m length over 640 m.

The total length of the tracks over 1100 m.

Difference in height of 66 m, descent to 25 percent.

All-weather track and trail for beginners run continuously, the seasonal route - when the air temperature to + 5 degrees.
