Chrisyd December 7th, 2008, 11:39 PM I believe that there are plans to build a stadium on the site of the Maze Prison, so I guess then Windsor Park will pass into history.
Here is a BBC article, but no idea what has actually happened: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/4663512.stm
Wolds Mariner January 6th, 2009, 10:07 PM I seem to remember there was an alternative proposal for a new stadium in Belfast. Whatever they do, they need to get the situation sorted pretty smartish.
JamesWales January 7th, 2009, 02:05 PM Although I'm sure the Health and safety zealots are overreacting by slashing capacity to 9,000, it's clear that something needs to be done sharpish. Perhaps in an intirim measure, NI could build a cheap, even temporary stand on the site of one of the two existing old stands?
It's such a shame, because NI have been playing so well in recent years, and Windsor Park has sold pretty much solidly for 4-5 years now. Also, their fans are excellent. The people in The Kop put Wales and England home crowds to shame (note, not Scotland who are equally great at home). When NI came to Cardiff a couple of years ago, their fans were awesome too.
Sort it out Belfast!
G.C. January 10th, 2009, 03:13 AM First off the capacity will not at any time be reduced 9000, even if the South Stand is closed, which it wont be, the Kop holds 4000 and the North hold 6800.
Second. The IFA cant do shit to Windsor without the owners permission, my team, Linfield. So saying that "NI could build a cheap, even temporary stand on the site of one of the two existing old stands?" Is a no-go from the off.
Third. The Maze has been scrapped. As Windsor is being upgraded to 22,000, with the Railway being developed in the near future to resemble the current Kop.
This thread stinks of OWC, and as like those shower of c*nts I wish you'd learn the facts first before posting crap like this.

You seem like a friendly chap..
Does OWC stand for Our Wee Country?
My point is that Windsor Park has been sold out for International games more or less for five years or so. I know Linfield aren't exactly flushed with cash, but I'm sure the political will could have existed to perhaps demolish the stand opposite the Kop and replace it with a cheap, semi-permanant stand a la Blackpool. I know it's easier said than done, and I known that Windsor Park deserves better than temporary stands, but if this could have been done to add perhaps 2000 seats to the capacity over the last five years, then it would have meant more revenue for the IFA, Linfield, and more importantly more people would have been able to see Northern Ireland play.
Anyway, it's good that it's being sorted soon with a new stand, and I just hope the NI team continue their decent form so that it can get filled.
G.C. January 28th, 2009, 05:46 PM I've seen the future, and the future is Royal Blue!

redstar1 February 11th, 2009, 05:28 PM Belfast city council will build a stadium in the city center. However it is expected that this will only happen if they can persuade Glentoran and/or Linfield to play in it. Glentoran have already sold their ground pending relocation and lets face it, Windsor Park is ready to fall down on 3 sides.
As part of the deal the GAA and Ulster Rugby will receive funds to upgrade their own facilities.
That's the current thinking in the city council anyway as I understand it. The stadium will be costed and designed to accomodate fairly basic needs, with an estimated 26,000 seats. Belfast city council are keen to utilise existing space so that probably means Ormeau park would be a good bet for it.

When was the last time you were in Windsor?
Ormeau park will never have a stadium in it.

I go to a lot of Linfield's home games. The Alex Russell stand is the only one not in need of being knocked down. To be fair this is a comment on the vast majority of stadiums in Northern Ireland.
Ormeau park is the preferred location for a lot of people. There are other places a stadium could go but if they want this to be used by Glentoran at least, it is going to have to be in or very near to East Belfast.
Another possibiliy is that they take over Glentoran's current plans to move to the Holywood road.
G.C. February 12th, 2009, 01:52 PM SF will oppose any stadium being built on Ormeau.
If you go to a lot of Linfeild games you should know its just the Kop again, after the AR was dropped.

I'm not used to the name change, it was only back in December sometime...
SF might not be able to do a lot about a stadium in Ormeau or anywhere.. it will be a council decision.
citybus February 12th, 2009, 06:07 PM Why will Sinn Fein not want a stadium in Ormeau Park? They couldnt argue that thw Maze is an alternative given that is probably dead as a dodo.
redstar1 February 12th, 2009, 08:06 PM I do think that regardless of what Linfield fans might think (and I'm one of them), there will be a new stadium and Windsor Park will no longer host Northern Ireland games. There will be compensation in place which will allow Linfield to renovate Windsor to the extent that it won't get condemned.
The Kop/Alex Russell stand aside, it really is falling apart.
Wolds Mariner February 12th, 2009, 09:26 PM Surely it's either a new stadium or completely rebuild Windsor Park.

Linfield own Windsor Park and they don't, nor are ever likely to have the money to rebuild.
Wolds Mariner February 13th, 2009, 11:59 PM But if that is deemed to be the right site for a national stadium, presumably the IFA would dig into their coffers, wouldn't they?

Not without offering to upgrade facilites country wide. Glentoran/Crusaders wouldn't be at all pleased if Linfield got a big fat cheque while the rest of the grounds lie in almost abject ruin.
It has to be said as well that Windsor park is not in a great area, especially if the IFA are hoping to attract more cross community supporters.

Are you sure you are a Linfield supporter? Like to see you telling the supporters from Olympia that their area isnt a good one.

What has that got to do with being a Linfield supporter? It's an awful area, I'd rather poke my eyes out with a rusty spoon than live there.

That's a bit harsh!!!!! :bash:
With all the health and safety, poor quality seats.... its still ~£9K give or take, call it £11k if it makes you happy or correct me and say what it is! :)
What's OWC???? Are you paranoid, I know a good psychiatrist who once worked at the Maze
steveedster April 4th, 2009, 07:35 PM N.I. need to move to a new stadium, simple.
Windsor Park is an embarrasment to international standard football. Let Linfield keep it and NI play at a new national stadium somewhere else.

Yes and the Stadio Olympico in San Marino is better than Windsor Park?
Do one.
