Nice pics!, Legazpis tarmac is unusually dark, is that ash coating from previous eruptions?

Thanks for the appreciation. The last eruption with thin ashfall was way back in June 2001; that's more than a decade ago. The tarmac you see there being early in the morning was still damp; it usually rains almost every night this time of the year; also, the runway is paved with asphalt, thus for years the wheels of the planes leave smudges on the concrete tarmac. Not even the 'mild' eruption in 2009 caused any flights to be cancelled. I assure you Legazpi Airport is the safest this part of Luzon (some flights from our nearest neighboring airport are from time to time diverted here when their short runway is covered with fog). But in anticipation of increased traffic, this airport will eventually close to give way to a better one some kilometers farther south. Maray na Albay sa imo.:)

Wala pong CEB-LGP route ang Z2. Posibleng na-delay ang dalawang flights for MNL kaya nagkataon na sabay silang dalawa sa tarmac. ^^

A rejoinder...

Legazpi airport open despite volcano threat

THE airport in Legazpi City remained open to all 18 domestic flights Thursday even as Mayon Volcano, a mere 12 kilometers away, continued its eruption that started Sunday, officials said.

Twelve daily flights from Manila and six from Cebu continued to land in Legazpi in the absence of any advisories from volcanologists that the airport be closed as a result of Mayon’s activity, said Connie Bungag, spokesman of the Manila International Airport Authority.

Alert no. 4, just one short of a five-step warning system, remained over the volcano, which continued to spew ash, rocks and lava even as the skies cleared on Christmas Eve.

But airport officials said the alert did not mean flights to Legazpi should be suspended.

“The [telephone] lines between the [volcanologists] and [airport officials] are open 24 hours,” Bungag said.

“We will immediately suspend regular commercial service should we receive any report from [them] regarding the Mayon volcano.”

^Heheh, possibly. But two Airbus A320 at the same time from the same airline is a joyful event to a plane spotter:).
And FYI, 5J will now deploy their ATRs to/from Cebu to/from Legazpi daily in anticipation of APX flying to/from the same sector using their Q400s this February.

Here, three planes at the same time...APX Airbus A320 and 5J Airbus and ATR.

I think the Gokongweis recognize the huge potential of the project based on Cebu Pacific's stellar success in Bicol, particularly in Legazpi. I wonder why they didn't include Panglao. Anyway, I hope they win the project. :okay: If they do win it and execute the project successfully, this could pave the way for future investments in Albay, not just from JG Summit.

^This time, both PR and 5J deployed the higher capacity Airbus A320, not the smaller A319. I hope Legazpi Airport will be one of the first trunkline airports to host the biggest single-aisle Airbus, the A321 Neo (5J ordered 30!).:)

The best airport view in the world

http://langyaw.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/legazpi_airport_1.jpg

No question about it. The Legazpi City airport has the best view in the country, if not the world with magnificent Mt. Mayon volcano infront of it with smoke billowing from its lip, especially in the early morning. Lignon Hill is at the foreground.

Morning flights are the best as the sun is still near the horizon, the light is just perfect and the clouds haven’t come in to wrap and shroud the moody lady. If the weather’s good, especially this summertime, and you always get picture perfect shots with blue skies. Really just spectacular

Picturesque Mayon! With Zest A320 in the foreground. Only 5j and PAL have A319s in their fleet.

Grabe, halos yata lahat ng Airport sa pinas with the exception of ILO, BCO at CRK lang yata, puro sobrang lapit ng mga business at residential establishments. NAIA ang isang numero uno.
