This picture of the pitch is dated 29 Nov so quite a few of these pieces have now been lifted.
The complex pieces where the arch divides have been numbered 1,2,3.
Notable is that only one of the spires was lying on the pitch is missing. Where was the other one on 29 Nov?

Had a chat with Florina at the visitors centre yesterday. She reassures me the arch will be completed before Christmas. She also told me that no one ever gives her information and that she finds out by watching people coming and going. When I asked her for exact dates for the arch, she told me the best thing to do was go to a website called skyscrapercity.com I suppose that's the proof that this is the best place for info

The LOC are shocking. Its actually disgusting that I can tell you where the 7956th bolt will be placed in the Olympic velodrome in London's Olympic Park, and find each and every view of this tiny bolt but can't even find more than one view of the new roof at Loftus!

disgusting and pathetic!

Florina gets her due...

-----------------------

Guru on new stadium
12 Dec 2008
Sharlene Packree

WHEN Florina Maphalala was appointed manager of the visitor’s centre at the Moses Mabhida stadium construction site, she knew nothing about the construction world.

Today, the bubbly woman from KwaMashu is a construction expert who is well versed in Durban’s 2010 showpiece.

She is responsible for showing local and international tourists step-by-step details of the massive construction, from the destruction of the old soccer stadium to what the completed state-of-the-art stadium will look like. She has mastered the art of giving an entertaining and informative presentation about the stadium.

And judging by the comments made in the visitor’s book, her audiences love her humour and obvious passion for her work.

It was clearly by chance that Maphalala, a former secretary at an engineering consultancy, got the visitor’s centre prime position.

“My bosses told me to update my CV and apply for the job. I applied and forgot about the job because I was happy with my current job and had no reason to leave,” she said.

A few weeks later, she was called for an interview. Impressed with her warm personality and passion for her work, the panel told Maphalala that the job was hers.

“I started work immediately. There was no formal training. It was like I was just thrown into a pool and had to learn how to swim,” she said.

Determined to be the best, Maphalala got to work an hour earlier every day, donned a hard helmet and spoke to construction workers to learn more about the stadium’s building process.

“I knew I had to learn more about the stadium if I was to tell others about it. Every day I would ask the workers new questions. I would also read all the newspaper articles about the stadium,” she said.

She said she loves her job because she gets to meet interesting people every day and said she feels immense pride when she sees the stadium.

“The stadium is like my child. Seeing it grow day by day has been an emotional experience for me. It’s wonderful being a part of this amazing project that will go down in history,” she said.

I like how the arch loops over ABSA Stadium's east stand in the first pic, then seems to grow out of ABSA's east and west stands in the 2nd pic. And yes, the sub-tropical greenery certainly adds to the appeal.

That diagram shows that it would be extremely difficult (if not impossible) to use MM for rugby - lack of space for the try scoring area on the field due to the athletics track.

Rugby income for this stadium is crucial. The pitch will be laid to allow Rugby and Soccer. The athletics track will have to be put in as the need arises which will be very seldom and then for a small crowd of a couple of thousand. This is a crazy situation especially considering that this is all for the Olympic bid and Durban has better chance of getting snow! I really hope I am proven wrong.

^^ its not just olympics, they could easily also go for Commonwealth. but i do understand what you are saying.

i am sure they must have some plans for different seating to appease rugby or else they wont move across. Also having never watched sport in a stadium with a track i cant comment, but many others have sadi they didnt have a problem.

Well, if a sponsor takes over the stadium, the name will be gone for good. Kings Park stadium is now known as ABSA stadium and I suspect the same will occur post-2010 re: MM stadium when a sponsor steps in.

i think maybe the "durban Stadium" name might only be temporary just for WC, just sounds more practical and easier for tourists, i doubt it will stay that name

It is just going to be used for the world cup. FIFA have a rule where by no naming rights by a private company will be used for any stadium, hence Coco Cola park is staying as Ellis Park. They also did the same for Germany with the Allianz arena where it was called München Stadion.

rulani
December 23rd, 2008, 08:55 AM
It makes quet a lot of sence that the names be of a place or anything else other than sponsers. Having this in mind, that some of the stadium's names whose sponsers are not FIFA sponsors. It would be unfair for the companies that are already FIFA sponsers. More so on the direct compititors. Eg: Having Cocacola brand displayed in the stadium during the FIFA world cup match as the stadium sponser and the Pepsi name as the FIFA sponsor. It would be unfair.

The same happened at the PE university stadium where FNB are the sponsors of the stadium and Bafana were training there for the game against Nigeria. Now ABSA as Bafana's sponsors complained about the display of FNB advert boards during the Bafana training. Its direct competitors and both were right, but as bafana sponsors ABSA had a right of advertisement during that time.

Here's some pics of MM from a perspective that has not been captured and posted here, to date.

This is why Durban is going to sizzle during the WC: fantastic weather + direct beach link to stadium + walking distance to hotels = unbeatable.

These pics give a sense of how the stadium is beginning to dominate Durban's beachfront skyline, and its proximity to the beach.

Happy 2009...

look likely they wont lift other segment today. My opinion is they have to check and measure to ensure the arch are fixed perfect not 0.5cm apart for whole day today. I expect they will add other segment tomorrow and check everything again to make sure the arch can stand for next century. I think they might finish arch by this week.

Ellingson: Mabhida Stadium well on its way

January 12 2009 at 12:16PM

By Lisa-Marie Els

The last piece of the Y-shaped arch at the Moses Mabhida Stadium is expected to be inserted this week.

Head of the city's strategic projects unit and 2010 programme, Julie-May Ellingson, said the last piece of the Y-shaped arch would be put in place by Wednesday.

"The second-last piece was put up on Saturday, and once the last piece is in we will definitely be having a glass of wine to celebrate," laughed Ellingson. According to Ellingson, the last piece to be inserted is one of the most difficult pieces to put in.

"So we are crossing fingers that the weather is calm enough to finish the arch," she said.

Bad weather has slowed down the construction of the stadium, which is set to be completed by October this year.

"We closed down over the Christmas period, so the storms haven't affected our progress much. However, during the week of December 15, we weren't able to get as much done as we would have liked because of bad weather."

Ellingson said the construction of the stadium was "absolutely" still on schedule. "There is still a lot to do, but we will definitely rest easier once the arch is finished," she said.

The next step in the construction phase is the building of the compression ring, which will give the roof, bowl and arch the strength required to hold together. "The cables are already on the pitch so that we can get started as soon as possible. We are hoping the roof will be completed by April or May this year," she said.

According to Ellingson, the arch and roof will cost R380 million.

And although there has been much work done on the stadium, there have been no worker injuries or deaths.

"The Moses Mabhida Stadium is the safest project in the country. We won the Master Builder's regional award for the safest R500-million and above (building) project, and won first prize on national level. Obviously we have had incidents of workers banging their fingers with hammers, but that's hardly serious," said Ellingson.

Since the start of the construction of the stadium, more than 6,1 million hours have been worked, with about 2 700 workers on site on any given day. Ellingson said about 8 000 tons of steel have already been used in the construction of the stadium.

HEY! piece number 1 is up.....or is it "K"!!!! And the radio is announcing that the last piece will be up in the next hour and a half! Oh how I would love to have had a ring side seat right now!!

I have done another overlay and it seems they added the second to last piece last night ON THE NORTHERN SIDE of the arch....THATS "K".....Hmmm, I didnt expect that! (this has FRIDAY'S, SUNDAYS, and TUESDAYS image overlayed)

well, how do they get in then? a crane doesnt lift them, so there must be an opening at the bottom and they climb up or something, quite interesting actually..

lol Lutzno, i'm sure they have a light inside. But.... how do the guy get out when arch complete. Isn't there a trapdoor on top of final arch?

there would need to be some sort of thing to do maintenance. also for the Cablecar operations and the like. So its more than likely near the single base. But there could be something in that final piece.

What a moment!

romanSA

Man, I have to say, there were times I was worried the arch would be off by a centimetre or two and wouldn't be able to attach properly! It really is remarkable how accurate the construction would have had to be to reach the point it has, given that construction occured simultaneously from both ends and one was one-sided, while the other end was double-sided. If the foundations and bases were set even a fraction of an inch off, the arch would not have met. Excellent, excellent, excellent engineering supervision and construction. Definitely the most technically complex construction of all the SA stadiums.
