Hunterdry December 11th, 2008, 04:09 PM Ah nice look likely MM stadium is most popular thread in Skyscraper forum... :)
Vrystaat December 11th, 2008, 05:38 PM http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3002/3099755397_75451138b0_o.jpg
This picture of the pitch is dated 29 Nov so quite a few of these pieces have now been lifted.
The complex pieces where the arch divides have been numbered 1,2,3.
Notable is that only one of the spires was lying on the pitch is missing. Where was the other one on 29 Nov?

Leftfoot December 12th, 2008, 07:21 AM HEHE.....I found the second Spire you were looking for Vrystaat....It's being mounted in position already! YAY!

GetDownAdam December 12th, 2008, 03:41 PM Had a chat with Florina at the visitors centre yesterday. She reassures me the arch will be completed before Christmas. She also told me that no one ever gives her information and that she finds out by watching people coming and going. When I asked her for exact dates for the arch, she told me the best thing to do was go to a website called skyscrapercity.com I suppose that's the proof that this is the best place for info
dysan1 December 12th, 2008, 03:46 PM ^^ hehe real good news about us, but something we knew already, the LOC and cities are always going to be slower than online communities in desemenating info
Mo Rush December 12th, 2008, 03:50 PM ^^ hehe real good news about us, but something we knew already, the LOC and cities are always going to be slower than online communities in desemenating info
The LOC are shocking. Its actually disgusting that I can tell you where the 7956th bolt will be placed in the Olympic velodrome in London's Olympic Park, and find each and every view of this tiny bolt but can't even find more than one view of the new roof at Loftus!
disgusting and pathetic!
Pirate99 December 13th, 2008, 12:38 PM Hi all, i agree the LOC is useless, I have been looking for info and pics on all our stadiums for a while now if I had not stumbled onto this site I'd still b clueless, thanx y'all u guys rock.

The organisers of Sexpo - 11 000 people voted online. Umhlanga is the 2nd sexiest beach (Clifton #1 and Camps Bay #3). Watch the press for details
I think they should have a vote for sexiest stadium. MM will win hands down

Guru on new stadium
12 Dec 2008
Sharlene Packree
WHEN Florina Maphalala was appointed manager of the visitor’s centre at the Moses Mabhida stadium construction site, she knew nothing about the construction world.
Today, the bubbly woman from KwaMashu is a construction expert who is well versed in Durban’s 2010 showpiece.
She is responsible for showing local and international tourists step-by-step details of the massive construction, from the destruction of the old soccer stadium to what the completed state-of-the-art stadium will look like. She has mastered the art of giving an entertaining and informative presentation about the stadium.
And judging by the comments made in the visitor’s book, her audiences love her humour and obvious passion for her work.
It was clearly by chance that Maphalala, a former secretary at an engineering consultancy, got the visitor’s centre prime position.
“My bosses told me to update my CV and apply for the job. I applied and forgot about the job because I was happy with my current job and had no reason to leave,” she said.
A few weeks later, she was called for an interview. Impressed with her warm personality and passion for her work, the panel told Maphalala that the job was hers.
“I started work immediately. There was no formal training. It was like I was just thrown into a pool and had to learn how to swim,” she said.
Determined to be the best, Maphalala got to work an hour earlier every day, donned a hard helmet and spoke to construction workers to learn more about the stadium’s building process.
“I knew I had to learn more about the stadium if I was to tell others about it. Every day I would ask the workers new questions. I would also read all the newspaper articles about the stadium,” she said.
She said she loves her job because she gets to meet interesting people every day and said she feels immense pride when she sees the stadium.
“The stadium is like my child. Seeing it grow day by day has been an emotional experience for me. It’s wonderful being a part of this amazing project that will go down in history,” she said.

Totally agree. It certainly is the most striking.
dysan1 December 14th, 2008, 01:42 PM It is a GORGEOUS sunny day in Durbs today, so got some snaps on the way back from the beach, the tropical greenery does add to the pics...

dysan1 December 14th, 2008, 03:39 PM yeah its been dominating my view when i drive across town for months and thought it was a view that people had not seen, but needed to. You can see how big it is against Kings Park from those shots
Mo Rush December 14th, 2008, 10:39 PM somebody asked about the arch segments

romanSA December 14th, 2008, 11:51 PM Great pics, Mike.
I like how the arch loops over ABSA Stadium's east stand in the first pic, then seems to grow out of ABSA's east and west stands in the 2nd pic. And yes, the sub-tropical greenery certainly adds to the appeal.
Durbsboi December 15th, 2008, 09:19 AM Hey guys, i have heard that group 5 do some site visits for small groups...would Durban people be interested?? i reckon the answer will be YES!!
stupid question ;)
Leftfoot December 15th, 2008, 09:47 AM Yeah...stupid question cos even the Richards Bay people would be interested...er thats me!
dysan1 December 15th, 2008, 10:35 AM Hehe, well then will see what can be arranged
Durbsboi December 15th, 2008, 11:09 AM Im on leave from Friday, but heading up north on Christmas day, & the few days leading up towards christmas I'd be stuck in my dads shop with the mad rush on.
dysan1 December 15th, 2008, 12:27 PM ^^ we looking at Jan i'd imagine? i got no time this year and i dont think the stadium does either hey
Leftfoot December 15th, 2008, 03:44 PM Hehe! It may be my imagination but it looks like arch piece 6a is in place.....I didnt see it being lifted but it looks like progress!

MM as seen from ABSA stadium...

romanSA December 15th, 2008, 06:17 PM Oh, and here's some from the packed concert. I much prefer this stage/audience configuration (east-west vs. north-south), although walking down ABSA's steep west stand at night is freaky (sat right at the top). Can't wait to attend concert in MM.

Me thinks this was 25th Nov 2008, Lionel Richie concert, at ABSA Kings Park stadium
Vrystaat December 16th, 2008, 02:51 PM The suspension cables are in and 8 segments still to go. Brilliant work.

rulani December 17th, 2008, 01:40 AM Cant wait to see the colors of MM stadium's chairs
DennisRodman97 December 17th, 2008, 02:35 AM i hope its blue!
Durbsboi December 17th, 2008, 08:52 AM I think its gona be green and yellow
nice pics Jerome, first time Im seeing a concert in ABSA with that stage configuration, agree with you it is much better.
If concerts are held in MM, Im sure some artists will use the Arch for extraodinary entrys.
dysan1 December 17th, 2008, 11:19 AM they had the configuration like that for a Savage garden concert years ago, i agree it works well, but for bigger gatherings where u want to fill both big grandstands you need to do the north - south (like the 50,000 robbie williams concert)
Durbsboi December 17th, 2008, 01:20 PM fairly old pic, but taken from the M4, just gives one the sort of scale to the stadium

Awesome pic's Mike, and equally awesome Pano!
Lydon December 18th, 2008, 09:31 AM I really hope the chairs aren't green and yellow...blue would look nice.
t-bang! December 18th, 2008, 10:05 AM i like yellow seats
dysan1 December 18th, 2008, 11:16 AM when will we know about the seats?
lukus December 18th, 2008, 03:19 PM I also think blue will look awesome
dysan1 December 18th, 2008, 04:18 PM from what i gather ours are multi coloured. ie a few different colour seats mashed all over (like Oz stadiums)
lukus December 18th, 2008, 06:21 PM I wouldve prefered blue or green
Leftfoot December 18th, 2008, 08:33 PM Yeah, I prefer Blue and variants of blue, it just looks cool and fresh. Red or orange too warm for Durbs methinks:)
rulani December 19th, 2008, 02:11 AM Eish, yellow and orange are not nice for a big stadium. I prefer blue or red but not the combination of the two.
cthighflyer December 19th, 2008, 02:50 AM Eish, yellow and orange are not nice for a big stadium. I prefer blue or red but not the combination of the two.
^^
purple and red would be nice
rulani December 19th, 2008, 02:55 AM ^^
purple and red would be nice
Perfect combo
Durbsboi December 19th, 2008, 07:39 AM purple and red, lmao
anyway, no additions to the arch for quite a few days now, will it be complete by christmas? with just 6 days to go, no one can tell. You know how they sometimes add 4 peices in one day, lol.
Leftfoot December 19th, 2008, 08:22 AM Yeah I noticed that. The Big Crane dont seem to wanna move....have they gone on holiday?!:ohno:
dysan1 December 19th, 2008, 10:18 AM well me Julie said it would only be completed after christmas.... there no rush gents

Vrystaat December 21st, 2008, 06:21 PM The official WC name is DURBAN STADIUM. The host city name is DURBAN.

Lydon December 21st, 2008, 08:53 PM That's actually awesome news. I don't like Moses Mabhida to be honest...
haggiesm December 21st, 2008, 09:58 PM I think stadiums shouldn't be named after people in the first place.
Vrystaat December 22nd, 2008, 12:37 AM The image is the side by side comparison of Durban vs Green point. This gives some idea of the impact of the athletics track. The real test will be experiencing a match in each. I hope Durban is OK. I am convinced Cape Town will be a brilliant venue.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3265/3125649859_0ddb3e0e55_o.jpg
haggiesm December 22nd, 2008, 08:02 AM i prefer stadiums without the tracks, but having watched an international in an athletics stadium, i'm not too worried.
Ron2K December 22nd, 2008, 08:51 AM That diagram shows that it would be extremely difficult (if not impossible) to use MM for rugby - lack of space for the try scoring area on the field due to the athletics track.
Vrystaat December 22nd, 2008, 09:37 AM That diagram shows that it would be extremely difficult (if not impossible) to use MM for rugby - lack of space for the try scoring area on the field due to the athletics track.
Rugby income for this stadium is crucial. The pitch will be laid to allow Rugby and Soccer. The athletics track will have to be put in as the need arises which will be very seldom and then for a small crowd of a couple of thousand. This is a crazy situation especially considering that this is all for the Olympic bid and Durban has better chance of getting snow! I really hope I am proven wrong.
dysan1 December 22nd, 2008, 10:21 AM ^^ its not just olympics, they could easily also go for Commonwealth. but i do understand what you are saying.
i am sure they must have some plans for different seating to appease rugby or else they wont move across. Also having never watched sport in a stadium with a track i cant comment, but many others have sadi they didnt have a problem.
haggiesm December 22nd, 2008, 10:45 AM royal bafokeng sports palace has hosted a rugby international without problems. i don't see why this venue should be any different.
Durbsboi December 22nd, 2008, 10:55 AM That's actually awesome news. I don't like Moses Mabhida to be honest...
Who does?
Political agenda's :ohno:
I quite like the sound of all three european versions of the name, but "Estadio Durban" stands out :D
Durbsboi December 22nd, 2008, 10:55 AM royal bafokeng sports palace has hosted a rugby international without problems. i don't see why this venue should be any different.
exactly, and it was a great game there as well
dysan1 December 22nd, 2008, 11:07 AM Who does?
Political agenda's :ohno:
I quite like the sound of all three european versions of the name, but "Estadio Durban" stands out :D
least its not eThekwini stadium :)
Leftfoot December 22nd, 2008, 02:13 PM ...er ok. anyone gonna be renaming this thread to #Durban stadium - 70000 (part 4)
juzzy December 22nd, 2008, 07:13 PM i think maybe the "durban Stadium" name might only be temporary just for WC, just sounds more practical and easier for tourists, i doubt it will stay that name
romanSA December 22nd, 2008, 08:01 PM Well, if a sponsor takes over the stadium, the name will be gone for good. Kings Park stadium is now known as ABSA stadium and I suspect the same will occur post-2010 re: MM stadium when a sponsor steps in.
Durbsboi December 23rd, 2008, 07:41 AM i think maybe the "durban Stadium" name might only be temporary just for WC, just sounds more practical and easier for tourists, i doubt it will stay that name
It is just going to be used for the world cup. FIFA have a rule where by no naming rights by a private company will be used for any stadium, hence Coco Cola park is staying as Ellis Park. They also did the same for Germany with the Allianz arena where it was called München Stadion.
rulani December 23rd, 2008, 08:55 AM It makes quet a lot of sence that the names be of a place or anything else other than sponsers. Having this in mind, that some of the stadium's names whose sponsers are not FIFA sponsors. It would be unfair for the companies that are already FIFA sponsers. More so on the direct compititors. Eg: Having Cocacola brand displayed in the stadium during the FIFA world cup match as the stadium sponser and the Pepsi name as the FIFA sponsor. It would be unfair.
The same happened at the PE university stadium where FNB are the sponsors of the stadium and Bafana were training there for the game against Nigeria. Now ABSA as Bafana's sponsors complained about the display of FNB advert boards during the Bafana training. Its direct competitors and both were right, but as bafana sponsors ABSA had a right of advertisement during that time.
rulani December 23rd, 2008, 09:16 AM If Pieter Mokaba can be the name instead of Polokwane, Mbombela instead of Nelspruit, the why not Moses Mabidha?
romanSA December 23rd, 2008, 10:18 AM Because they were not high ranking members of the communist party (like MM). Seems like red fear still prevails.
dysan1 December 23rd, 2008, 10:59 AM ^^ interesting take. I just think that the name MM was never 100% passed for the stadium
Durbsboi December 23rd, 2008, 01:38 PM Is that................facade I see!!!

rulani December 23rd, 2008, 02:25 PM ^^ interesting take. I just think that the name MM was never 100% passed for the stadium
You maybe right, i was thinking the same. But it does not matter, both names could have the same cost of name emplimentation. Its just the matter of choice, that all.
Mo Rush December 23rd, 2008, 03:20 PM With the contractual completion date set for May 2009, I assume the stadium 5 months behind schedule now, four months being due to the arch.

romanSA January 5th, 2009, 09:35 AM Here's some pics of MM from a perspective that has not been captured and posted here, to date.
This is why Durban is going to sizzle during the WC: fantastic weather + direct beach link to stadium + walking distance to hotels = unbeatable.
These pics give a sense of how the stadium is beginning to dominate Durban's beachfront skyline, and its proximity to the beach.
Happy 2009...

SharksBoy January 11th, 2009, 08:06 PM Just drove past MM stadium earlier. cant believe it nearly done. Also by the way i'm not sure if it my eye actually the stadium is MASSIVE even if you stand on beach. cant wait to see arch complete this week...
friendsofthecity January 11th, 2009, 10:01 PM That's really a big one!
Ron2K January 12th, 2009, 11:44 AM Looking at the webcam, seems like they're preparing to lift the penultimate segment...
Leftfoot January 12th, 2009, 12:46 PM I dunno, the big crane has been still all day.....but me has big hopes!:)
SharksBoy January 12th, 2009, 01:16 PM look likely they wont lift other segment today. My opinion is they have to check and measure to ensure the arch are fixed perfect not 0.5cm apart for whole day today. I expect they will add other segment tomorrow and check everything again to make sure the arch can stand for next century. I think they might finish arch by this week.

Ellingson: Mabhida Stadium well on its way
January 12 2009 at 12:16PM
By Lisa-Marie Els
The last piece of the Y-shaped arch at the Moses Mabhida Stadium is expected to be inserted this week.
Head of the city's strategic projects unit and 2010 programme, Julie-May Ellingson, said the last piece of the Y-shaped arch would be put in place by Wednesday.
"The second-last piece was put up on Saturday, and once the last piece is in we will definitely be having a glass of wine to celebrate," laughed Ellingson. According to Ellingson, the last piece to be inserted is one of the most difficult pieces to put in.
"So we are crossing fingers that the weather is calm enough to finish the arch," she said.
Bad weather has slowed down the construction of the stadium, which is set to be completed by October this year.
"We closed down over the Christmas period, so the storms haven't affected our progress much. However, during the week of December 15, we weren't able to get as much done as we would have liked because of bad weather."
Ellingson said the construction of the stadium was "absolutely" still on schedule. "There is still a lot to do, but we will definitely rest easier once the arch is finished," she said.
The next step in the construction phase is the building of the compression ring, which will give the roof, bowl and arch the strength required to hold together. "The cables are already on the pitch so that we can get started as soon as possible. We are hoping the roof will be completed by April or May this year," she said.
According to Ellingson, the arch and roof will cost R380 million.
And although there has been much work done on the stadium, there have been no worker injuries or deaths.
"The Moses Mabhida Stadium is the safest project in the country. We won the Master Builder's regional award for the safest R500-million and above (building) project, and won first prize on national level. Obviously we have had incidents of workers banging their fingers with hammers, but that's hardly serious," said Ellingson.
Since the start of the construction of the stadium, more than 6,1 million hours have been worked, with about 2 700 workers on site on any given day. Ellingson said about 8 000 tons of steel have already been used in the construction of the stadium.
Lutzno January 12th, 2009, 03:24 PM "The second-last piece was put up on Saturday, and once the last piece is in we will definitely be having a glass of wine to celebrate," laughed Ellingson. According to Ellingson, the last piece to be inserted is one of the most difficult pieces to put in.
So theres actually only "K" still to go?
dysan1 January 12th, 2009, 03:42 PM ^^ hmmm seems like it hey
Leftfoot January 12th, 2009, 03:53 PM "The second-last piece was put up on Saturday, and once the last piece is in we will definitely be having a glass of wine to celebrate," laughed Ellingson. According to Ellingson, the last piece to be inserted is one of the most difficult pieces to put in.
So theres actually only "K" still to go?
If thats the case its gonna be a very big piece to lift.....it almost seems unlikely.
Leftfoot January 13th, 2009, 06:57 AM HEY! piece number 1 is up.....or is it "K"!!!! And the radio is announcing that the last piece will be up in the next hour and a half! Oh how I would love to have had a ring side seat right now!!
I have done another overlay and it seems they added the second to last piece last night ON THE NORTHERN SIDE of the arch....THATS "K".....Hmmm, I didnt expect that! (this has FRIDAY'S, SUNDAYS, and TUESDAYS image overlayed)

Lutzno January 13th, 2009, 02:22 PM anti-climax of the year so far.
dysan1 January 13th, 2009, 02:26 PM i think people should have stuck to the expected and reported completion of tomorrow.... it would avoid disappointment...but yeah every one gets caught up in it

SharksBoy January 13th, 2009, 04:20 PM lol Lutzno, i'm sure they have a light inside. But.... how do the guy get out when arch complete. Isn't there a trapdoor on top of final arch?
Lutzno January 13th, 2009, 04:20 PM when do you think the supports will come down, i cant wait to see it bare in all its splendour...
Lutzno January 13th, 2009, 04:22 PM lol Lutzno, i'm sure they have a light inside. But.... how do the guy get out when arch complete. Isn't there a trapdoor on top of final arch?
well, how do they get in then? a crane doesnt lift them, so there must be an opening at the bottom and they climb up or something, quite interesting actually..
dysan1 January 13th, 2009, 04:22 PM lol Lutzno, i'm sure they have a light inside. But.... how do the guy get out when arch complete. Isn't there a trapdoor on top of final arch?
there would need to be some sort of thing to do maintenance. also for the Cablecar operations and the like. So its more than likely near the single base. But there could be something in that final piece.
What a moment!
dysan1 January 13th, 2009, 04:23 PM when do you think the supports will come down, i cant wait to see it bare in all its splendour...
i'd imagine in a week or so, give it all time to settle and do final checks and how all is holding up
dysan1 January 13th, 2009, 04:23 PM I feel like kicking myself, I just went to the upstairs floor now, and we can see it clearly!!! got some pics on my phone but cant find the freeken cable!
haha all these years and now you realise? lol

Leftfoot January 13th, 2009, 04:36 PM Yay! Well done Durbs!
Lydon January 13th, 2009, 04:37 PM Am currently in freezing cold Toronto, 7 hours behind you guys. Just clicked on last page.
Pity you just missed the fanfare!
romanSA January 13th, 2009, 04:39 PM Man, I have to say, there were times I was worried the arch would be off by a centimetre or two and wouldn't be able to attach properly! It really is remarkable how accurate the construction would have had to be to reach the point it has, given that construction occured simultaneously from both ends and one was one-sided, while the other end was double-sided. If the foundations and bases were set even a fraction of an inch off, the arch would not have met. Excellent, excellent, excellent engineering supervision and construction. Definitely the most technically complex construction of all the SA stadiums.
romanSA January 13th, 2009, 04:40 PM Pity you just missed the fanfare!
I would have been there recording the moment. Thankfully we have the webcam!
