Krishnamoorthy K November 2nd, 2010, 02:59 PM * Padubidri-Karkala stretch to be repaired
* The State highway will link NH 13 and NH 17
* The bridge near Indralli to be widened
Udupi: The State Government has released Rs. 8 crore for the repair of various roads damaged in heavy rain in the district from October 21 to 23, said Higher Education Minister V.S. Acharya on Monday.
He told presspersons here that a portion of the money would be utilised for repairing the damaged sections of National Highway No. 17. The State Highway from Padubidri to Karkala would be widened from 5.5 metres to 7.5 metres at a cost of Rs. 45 crore under the Karnataka State Highways Improvement Project (KSHIP). The widening of this highway would help connect NH 13 with NH 17 in the district.
The tarring of the stretch from Kadiyali to Syndicate Circle Road would be taken up shortly. The Kundelkadu Ghat stretch on the Udupi-Manipal Road would be widened. Land filling works for this purpose had started. The Konkan Railway bridge near Indralli on Udupi-Manipal Road would be widened by the Konkan Railway Corporation at a cost of Rs. 1.25 crore. The widening of the Karambally to Kalsank stretch on the Udupi-Gunidbail Road to 60 feet would be taken up shortly.
Dr Acharya said the 600 MW unit of the coal-based thermal plant of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) had started generating power on an experimental basis.
Another 600 MW unit of the same plant would start generating power by the end of December in the second phase.
When the complete plant (1,200 MW) starts generating power, it would add to the existing power generation capacity of the State.
Nearly 95 per cent of the work on District Office Complex, which would house various government offices, at End Point area in Manipal, had been completed. The complex would be ready in December.

engineer.akash November 5th, 2010, 05:46 AM AC bus shelter to come up in Udupi
Staff Correspondent
Udupi: Come February and people travelling to Mangalore can wait for bus in an air-conditioned shelter at the Service Bus-Stand here if everything goes according to the plans of Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC).
This air-conditioned shelter will also have a small coffee shop.
The CMC also plans to build a room for an ATM centre of a bank near the bus-stand.
President of the CMC Kiran Kumar told The Hindu on Thursday that work on the air-conditioned bus shelter was expected to start within a week. It would be built in “C” shape.
The CMC had cleared two petty shops and a phone booth in the area to facilitate work on the shelter, he said.
The bus shelter on 100 sq. ft. area would be constructed on the build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis, Mr. Kumar said.
A two-tonne air-conditioner unit would be installed. The company, which would set up the coffee shop, would maintain cleanliness of the air-conditioned shelter, he said.
This shelter would be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
“We have extremely hot weather from March to May. Private bus operators are expected to start air-conditioned bus service from Udupi to Mangalore in January. When air-conditioned buses start operating, we should also provide air-conditioned bus-stands in keeping with changing times,” Mr. Kumar said.
Air-conditioned bus stands would be set up in other places of Udupi later. “A plan to construct an air-conditioned bus-stand in Manipal has been given up for the time being as the Public Works Department will widen the road there,” Mr. Kumar said.

engineer.akash November 5th, 2010, 07:51 AM Malpe harbour to flaunt a new look
Manjushree G Naik
The 10 acre land in Baputhota is emerging as a new picturesque infrastructural set up aiding the expansion of Malpe harbour that gives entirely a brand innovative look to the dock.
Blueprint of malpe fishery harbourA comprehensive development plan of Rs 37.15 crore for Malpe fishery harbour has been designed. The work is likely to be completed within three years.
Speaking to City Herald MLA Raghupathy Bhat informed that the entire project has been taken up under Centre and State partnership.
The new project comprising three phases of development work is being taken up simultaneously with the renovation works of the existing port. Repair of the jetties and quays, existing fish landing and auction halls, damaged northern retaining wall, internal roads, dismantling the present dilapidated auction hall and rest shed come under the project comprising the restoration works of the old infrastructure that already exist in the dock.
A sum of Rs 32.315 crore has been earmarked for the purpose. The comprehensive plan for the new infrastructure coming up at the cost of Rs 339.024 crore is exclusively furnished to wrap up the flaws existing in the present harbour that created inconveniences to the fishing trade.
Dredging work inside the idle-berthing basin at Baputhota area and outside the idle-berthing basin at Udyavara river will be taken up to -3.0 m level. Reclamation and levelling works with dredged and borrowed material, constructions of RCC cantilever and anchored diaphragm wall in Baputhota area and low level RCC diaphragm wall for small boats for the existing harbour, surfacing of double lane asphalt roads, concrete road, fish loading area, vehicle parking area are taken up in the initial phase.
Simultaneously construction works of net mending sheds, fishermen rest sheds, boat repair shops, compound wall, public toilet blocks, radio communication centre and security guard house will be taken up.
Bhat said plans are also envisaged to take up projects supporting fresh water storage, supply and distribution with water treatment plants, ground water sumps, pump house, overhead tank, sea water supply and distribution with ground water sump, drainage and sewage including effluent treatment plants, toxic waste reception sheds, spent oil reception sheds, bilge oil separators, storm water drains and cross water drainage works, he said. Greenery and landscaping is given additional prominence in the 10 acre land. Fire extinguisher, fire hydrant, additional subsoil investigations, field data collection instrument, environmental impact assessment mitigation measures and monitoring all will be a part of the inclusive diagram of the structures coming up in the 10 acre land.
Malpe being one of the illustrious harbours is all set to obtain a facelift lavishly designed for trade purpose.

Krishnamoorthy K November 9th, 2010, 12:23 PM * Jetties will be built at Malpe and at St. Mary's Island exclusively for tourists
Big plans:Malpe Development Committee has drawn up several projects to meet its goal of providing a ‘tourism friendly environment' at Malpe and St. Mary's Island.
Udupi: The picturesque Malpe beach here will get a major makeover making it even more attractive and friendly to tourists.
The Malpe Development Committee, which is overseeing development activities both at Malpe and St. Mary's Island, which is about 6 km from the (Malpe) beach, has drawn up several projects to meet its goal of providing a “tourism friendly environment” at both places.
The most ambitious of these plans is the construction of a jetty at the south side of Malpe and another jetty at St. Mary's Island. At present, tourists wanting to go to St. Mary's Island have to enter Malpe fishing harbour and take a boat. There is congestion at the harbour as fishing boats keep entering and exiting the harbour.
Again, after nearing St. Mary's Island, the tourists have to take a small boat and then reach the island as it does not have a jetty.
Connectivity
Secretary of Malpe Development Committee (MDC) Gokuldas Nayak told The Hindu on Sunday that the Department of Tourism had sanctioned Rs. 1 crore for the construction of a jetty at the south side of Malpe beach. Talks were on with the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) on the exact location for construction of the jetty at the beach.
A proposal of Rs. 1 crore for the construction of a jetty at St. Mary's Island had been sent to the Tourism Department.
“The construction of jetties at the beach and island will provide direct connectivity between them without the hassles of entering the harbour. Both these jetties are expected to be ready in two years,” Mr. Nayak said.
Interlock road
A new parking lot would be built on the northern side of the beach for four-wheelers and two-wheelers. An interlock road and a small bridge would be built on the northern side so that this road touches Thottam Road.
Petty shops would be converted into attractive kiosks. The committee had introduced two water scooters for tourists at the beach about a week ago. “We will introduce two more water scooters in about 10 days,” Mr. Nayak said. The committee would hire expert swimmers who would be on standby every evening to rescue swimmers in trouble. A watchtower with a telescope would be built to keep an eye on activities at the beach.
Statue
There is a plan to erect a statue of the exponent of Dwaita philosophy, Sri Madhwacharya, at the beach as it was here that Sri Madhwacharya found the idol of lord Krishna which he installed at the Sri Krishna Math in Udupi 800 years ago. “We are yet to decide whether to use granite or other material for the construction of the statue because of the saline climate on the beach. This plan is in the preliminary stages,” Mr. Nayak added.

bel_vai November 17th, 2010, 05:15 PM Udupi, November 17: Syndicate Bank, as part of the financial inclusion, has announced the induction of as many as 50 Business Correspondents in Udupi district.
Speaking on the occasion K Devananda Upadhya General Manager, Corporate Office, Syndicate Bank, Bangalore, said that at the time of nationalization of banks, Syndicate Bank had only 16,000 branches and it has rose to 70,000 branches at present. India has over 60 lakh villages. Till date bank branches could reach only 6 per cent of villages and 94 per cent villages deprived of bank branch facility. Over 51 per cent of the population is deprived of a bank account.
He said that out of the 269 non-branch villages, Synd bank had resolved to adopt 70 villages for financial inclusion.
``Setting up of a bank branch in a village requires man power and its viability must also be studied for a sustained growth. In this contest induction of Business Correspondents who function as mobile branches in the villages plays a major role in financial inclusing. As over 40 per cent of Indian population is in the age group of 18-40 providing employment to them was also a duty of the government. Appointment of Business Correspondents also contributes to employment generation’’, Devananda Upadhya opined.
ZP CEO Rajashekhar, NABARD AGM Prasad Rao, Syndicate Bank Director Dinkar S Poonja, Syndicate Bank Deputy General Manager K Santhosh Kamath, its Assistant General Manager Jyothi N Shenoy and others were present.

Bus commuters in Udupi can heave a sigh of relief from the scorching heat in the days to come as the bus stops especially the Udupi service bus stand will be introduced with air condition facility in a short span of time.
Speaking to City Herald, CMC President Kiran Kumar informed that the project has been already assigned to Hareesh Bhardhwaj of Bhardhwaj Enterprises. A proposal has been initiated to build an ATM adjacent to air-conditioned bus top. The entire project has been taken up under BOT (Build Operate and Transfer) basis, he said.
As of now about 150 sq ft has been proposed for the project. The area where Mangalore buses make their halt will be taken up in the beginning. The portion of the area will be renovated and subsequently air-condition facility will be introduced. Tenders have been called for setting up of ATM from the banks interested. Banks have to pay monthly rent to the CMC for the space provided.
MC Commissioner Gokuldas Nayak informed that CMC has called for expression of interest. Any individual who is interested can come forward and take up the project. He should bear the expenses that incur owing to new settlements in the area.
Electricity bill and other maintenance charges should be looked after by those who take up the project, he added.
CMC’s role in the new venture is very limited as everything is managed by those who undertake the project. CMC will not offer any financial help to the project. However, it is a trade based on give and take policy. The right for advertising space is solely assigned to the party that has been involved. The party can look after the maintenance task by collecting the advertisement revenue.
Nayak said that as the bus stop is a place filled with crowd, one can expect huge number of advertisement contracts. Then it would end up in an amazing business, he informed.
The party can sign the BOT based contract for few years and hand over the project to CMC once the time bound is met. After studying the result of the initial venture, the CMC will think of taking up similar projects in Manipal bus stop.
A/C bus stops being part of mega Udupi project will make the summer chill for the passengers who otherwise get tired of waiting for the buses. CMC has many projects in its hand that intend to beautify the city. Certainly, this one will add up to the charm of the temple town.

engineer.akash December 26th, 2010, 02:37 PM Belapu - A model GP in Udupi dist
Manjushree G Naik
http://www.deccanherald.com/images/editor_images1/2010/12/24/zila.jpg
Belapu Gram Panchyat in Udupi district has been working subsidiary to reach all the objectives that lead to the inception of Panchayat Raj system in the country.
A partial view of Belapu GP building in Udupi district.Three tier system of governance was basically introduced to give more importance to the development in rural areas. Belapu seems to have set an example for other Gram Panchayats in the district with many developmental works taking place rapidly. Here one can come across the conceptualisation of Gandhiji’s dream of rural India, i.e., ‘Grama Swarajya’.
Speaking to City Herald, Belapu Gram Panchayat President Deviprasad Shetty informed that Belapu has won national award twice for its all round development. The key aim of the Gram Panchayat is to introduce all sorts of basic infrastructural facilities to the villagers, he said.
Belapu is certainly a role model to other Gram Panchayats as it is undergoing the developmental changes by adopting various welfare programmes, right from drinking water facilities to educational programmes. Agriculture, animal husbandry, roads, fishing, forest development, small scale industries, handicrafts, adult literacy programme, health and sanitation, welfare of backward communities, alcohol-free society, insurance scheme and many other aspects are covered under all round development programme framed exclusively by the Belapu Gram Panchayat. The village consists of as many as 3,684 population in an area of 3,571 sq kms. Annual income of the village is about 3.20 lakh. There are about 728 families in the village.
Shetty said that the blueprint for first phase of development project was designed in the Five Year Plan of Belapu Gram Panchayat. Priority was given according to the necessity of the needs, he added.
Of the 728 families in Belapu, about 504 families are dependent on Municipality for drinking water. Drinking water project worth Rs 80 lakh was initially planned to provide safe drinking water for the entire village. Nearly Rs 1 crore has been invested on roads for concretisation and up gradation of the starches in every nook and corner of Belapu.
Good quality roads will minimise the difficulties encountered while traveling. The other issue that was tabled the list of importance was well maintenance of underground drainage system to beautify the village. Belapu has won Nirmala Gram Purskar during the year 2006. Solid waste management, toilets, ban on plastics have enabled the village to get acclaimed with the special recognition.
Attempts were made to improve the ground water level by introducing percolating ponds and vented dams. Awareness was created among the people regarding rainwater harvesting. The project was set up at the cost of Rs 90 lakhs. Street lights and electricity facilities were made available to all houses. A sum of Rs 964 lakh has been invested to build electricity sub stations in Belapu.
Education was another area that was given more thrust because people in Belapu felt education is the only way to enlighten the minds of people. Two primary schools and one high school were opened to impart education in the area. Besides it, adult literacy programmes were also introduced. Afforestation programme to grow medicinal plants and other saplings were taken up in as many as 94 acres of land. Benefits of most of the government sponsored welfare programmes like housing schemes, employment schemes and many other programmes are procured by the villagers.
The other projects that are nearing completion include Grama Vikhasa Soudha built at the cost of Rs 24 lakhs, Ambedkar Bhavana built at the cost of Rs 10 lakh, sophisticated public library and cremation ground. Administrative decentralisation in fact helps out multifaceted task of development. However, the success largely depends on the interest of people representatives who come forward to utilise the available resources to the maximum level. Political leaders in Belapu have taken up the lead keeping aside the party differences. Miracle can happen, if the achievements in Belapu village is replicated elsewhere too.

Krishnamoorthy K December 30th, 2010, 08:13 AM Karnataka government's department of Fisheries has received clearance from the Centre to undertake the expansion of its fishing harbour. The third phase of expansion was mandated to meet the growing fishing activity in the region. While the total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 57.6 crore, the Centre has released Rs. 8 crore, of which Rs 5 crore will be for Mangalore and Rs 3 crore for Malpe.
According to H.S Veerappa Gowda, director, department of fisheries, Karnataka government, the third phase of expansion will comprise construction of an auction hall, wharf, berthing jetty among other facilities.
The project will be spread over a period of four years and tenders for the work have been already called for. We are now working to award the tender. Plans are being devised to decongest the main harbour and improve hygienic conditions at both Malpe and Mangalore which after expansion could accommodate 3,500 boats.
Cage farming of fish in open sea is now being planned in Karwar. In this regard, the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), a government of India undertaking under the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR), which has its regional office at Karwar, recently conducted a trial run with 6 cages of the seabass fish, a local breed, which was tested by providing artificial feed. " This variety of fish is popular in the European countries. In the domestic market, the seabass variety is known to fetch Rs 200 per kg. Therefore, the department is keen to capitalise on this lucrative opportunity," he stated.
The trial was carried out for around six months and each of this fish weighed about 400-500 grams. The CMFRI has identified around 60 beneficiaries for the cage farming project near the Karwar coastal belt. There are 6 groups of 10 members each and the process of forming a co-operative society is on the cards. The funds for the project will be through the National Fisheries Development Board that finances 50 per cent of the unit, and the running cost with the remaining amount, borne by the beneficiaries. "The scheme will be an employment generating activity. The biggest advantage of cage farming is the ability to produce more fish per unit area," stated the Karnataka Fisheries department director.

Work in progress on widening Surathkal-Kundapur stretch of the highway

SHAVED OFF:A heap of timber lying on National Highway No. 17 at Kinnimulki near Udupi on Monday.
Udupi: Hundreds of trees which earlier stood majestically on either sides of National Highway 17 providing it with a green cover are now a thing of the past, thanks to the four-lane work of the Surathkal-Kundapur stretch, which is progressing rapidly.
Many of these trees were over 100 hundred years old. Yet these trees are being felled for the widening of the National Highway 17, which to say the least, is the artery of Udupi district.
The felling reached Kinnimulki here on Monday. Large trees, which used to provide shade from the scorching sun during summer, were all razed within a couple of hours.
Assistant Conservator of Forests, Kundapur, Manjunath Shetty, told The Hindu that nearly 16,500 trees were being felled for the widening of National Highway 17 from Mulky in Dakshina Kannada district to Kundapur in Udupi district. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) was giving Rs. 94,000 a km for compensatory plantation to the Department of Forests. “The NHAI has to plant two saplings for every tree felled,” he said.
While the felling of these trees had raised the hackles of the environmentalists, some supported the venture. According to M.A. Madhyastha, member of the Karnataka State Wildlife Board, the felling of these trees was “aesthetically bad and environmentally disastrous”. The felling of trees would increase the surface temperature along the highway. Besides, many of these trees were home for birds and animals. Now they had been rendered homeless. If felling of trees was inevitable, the authorities should try to plant saplings of the same trees rather than exotic and fast-growing trees. “Instead of cutting trees and widening the highway, the Government could have thought of a two-tier highway”, Dr. Madhyastha said.
However, Narasimha Suvarna, an autorickshaw driver in Kinnimulki, said that felling of trees would make the highway wider and help in smooth movement of vehicles. “It is good. We want development. Trees can be planted after the highway work is completed”, he added.

engineer.akash January 11th, 2011, 11:09 PM Phase-II of Malpe-Manipal road in limbo
UDUPI: The second phase of Malpe-Manipal road, undertaken by the state highway division of PWD, is progressing at a snail's pace. While the first phase of the widening work of this road, which is a part of Malpe-Molakalmuru state highway, received much appreciation from the public and commuters, incompletion of the second phase has come under severe criticism.
The first phase was from Karvali Junction to Kadiyali, which passes through Udupi city bus stand and Kalsanka bridge. People heaved a sigh of relief when widening work started on this congested road three years ago. The road was dedicated for use last year. However, much to the disappointment of people, the second phase, a distance of 3.2 km from Kadiyali up to Syndicate Circle Manipal did not get the same attention and action from the authorities. The proposed railway overbridge work at Indrali, which is not taken up so far, and the incompletion of the widening work at Kundalkadu area at the Manipal entrance proved stumbling blocks for the second phase work.
Thousands of vehicles ply on Malpe-Manipal road everyday. People hope the authorities show the same urgency in completing the second phase, as they did in case of the first phase. Speaking to The Times of India on the status of the work, Suresh Shetty, executive engineer, PWD State Highways said, 90% of the second phase road widening work is completed. A short and vulnerable stretch at Kandalkadu area is incomplete as the land belonged to the Krishna Mutt. "We are awaiting the land acquisition officer to acquire the land from the legal owner of the land, so that we can go ahead with the work," he said. Regarding the the additional railway overbridge at Indrali, he said they are waiting for funds to take up the work. So far Rs 12.5 crore has been spent on this stretch in the second phase.
Sadhashiva Prabhu, assistant commissioner of Kundapur revenue sub-division confirmed the land acquiring process of Kundalkadu area is under process and would be completed soon and handed over to PWD.

Kurlon is into the business of pure comfort. A head start in the business in 1962 by Late Shri.T. Ramesh U Pai,it is now looking into an extensive brand extension, and a complete makeover - from sleep comfort, to home comfort.
To give its expanding activities a definite direction and a wider dimension, Kurlon Limited is repositioning itself as a major player in the comfort industry rather than a leader in just the mattress business. Thus operating on a larger canvas, the company will have more room to grow, and will manufacture a whole wide range of trusted quality products for its customers.
History
Kurlon Limited, a Manipal Group Company came into existence in 1962. The Company was then called 'Karnataka Consumer Products Ltd' and on the 8th of December, 1995 the Company was renamed as Kurlon Limited.
Kurlon is part of the 2,000 crore Manipal Group of companies founded by the Pai's of Manipal which is a major financial and industrial group in India. The Group has its activities spread over Financial Services, Manufacturing, Education, Electronic Commerce, Software Services, Share Broking, etc. The Group is headed by Mr. Sudhakar Pai who is the Chairman of the Group. Mr. Pai is on the Boards of several well-known Industrial, Commercial and Educational Enterprises.
Kurlon was conceived when Mr. Pai was in Germany in 1959. He found that car seat cushions were manufactured of rubberised coir. The manufacturer was importing curled coir from Sri Lanka.
In India, the coir industry has developed very well, mostly in Kerala where they produce 'Retted Fibre'. Green husks of coconut are immersed in the salty backwaters for 10 to 12 months and the retted husk is supplied to various homes to make Mats and Matting rolls after producing the yarn from this fibre. This has created employment to many women in the State.
Austrian technology was available to extract fibre from the dried coconut husk and curl it into ropes and keep it in that state for minimum 3 months. When uncurled, curled coir becomes tiny springs. The cars manufactured in India in 60s were very few in numbers. It was uneconomical to start the moulded product out of the rubberised coir to manufacture car seat cushions. After a lot of experiments and quality control steps, Mr.Ramesh Pai thought of entering into Rubberised Coir mattress manufacturing. Thus, Kurlon was born. became one of the most popular mattresses providing restful sleep to Indian consumers.
Today Kurlon has created direct employment over 1000 people and indirect employment to lakhs of coir workers across the sub-continent. Kurlon's success is built on a solid infrastructure and its powerful marketing strength. The Company has 44 Sales Offices, which are profit centers, strategically located all over the country. All the centers are working on and trade terms. The Company products are exported to West Asia viz; U.A.E., Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, UK, Europe, South and East of Africa, Indian Ocean rim, SAARC, South East and Far East countries.
Kurlon Ltd., is the brand leader in the industry and has acquired major market share in the branded mattresses segment.
Taking advantage of the market potential, Kurlon strongly believes in giving the customers quality products of a wide range at competitive prices, which will result in customer satisfaction.

UDUPI: This temple town which is now blessed with fairly good and widened roads, compared to the narrow streets a decade ago, is still dogged by the problem of parking space for vehicles. This is a problem authorities should address immediately. The major problem areas for parking are Kavi Muddanna Marg (KM Marg), Court Road and Maruthi Veedike.
These are important roads in the Udupi city municipal council areas, which form the central business district, comprising major business establishments, shops, offices and hotels on both sides. The Udupi CMC office, which is also housed on K M Marg, is the busiest road. Though the authorities have earmarked parking space for four-wheelers on the right side and two-wheelers on the left side of the road, the haphazard manner in which vehicles are parked on both sides leads to traffic blocks and hinders the smooth flow of traffic.
The lack of enforcing parking provision in front of most buildings/shops on these roads is a major mistake on the part of the CMC. During peak hours, getting into these areas on four-wheelers or two-wheelers and parking them or returning, is always a nightmare. The paid parking areas both at the old jatka stand opposite the KSRTC bus stand, and in Krishna Mutt area, have lessened the parking load to a certain extent. The problems in other areas remain.
Many commuters view that the parking problems in Udupi CMC can only be solved by the joint efforts of the traffic police and Udupi CMC officials. Instead of blaming each other, immediate action can make a qualitative change, feel citizens. During the monthly CMC meetings, the top brass of the CMC pass the buck to the traffic police department and wash their hands of the issue.
Police officials also grumble about the attitude of the CMC bosses for allowing parking problems to continue. The phenomenal increase in the number of vehicles -- both four-wheelers and two-wheelers have gone up four times in the past decade -- is a burden on the infrastructure. Parking space is inadequate, resulting in parking problems.

Krishnamoorthy K February 26th, 2011, 09:54 AM * ‘Budget hasn't given importance to State'
Udupi: Railway budget has evoked mixed reaction here. President of the Udupi Railway Yatri Sangha R.L. Dias said: “We are happy that the Ministry has extended the Yashwanthpur-Mangalore day train (16515) to Karwar. This train runs thrice a week. We have been fighting for the extension of this train to Karwar for the past two years.”
Mr. Dias said that owing to the extension of the train to Karwar, people from Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts would be connected to Bangalore. This would help those visiting Bangalore for government, educational and private work. He said the other demand for stoppage of three trains which passed through Udupi had not been fulfilled. These three trains are Kochuveli – Dehra Dun Express (weekly), Kochuveli – Amritsar Express (weekly) and Pune – Ernakulum Express. The sangha had sought increasing the number of coaches on Mangalore-Kurla Matsyagandha Express from 21 to 24. But no action had been taken. It had demanded that the number of coaches on Mangalore-Madgaon train be increased from 11 to 14 as it passed through temple towns of Udupi, Gokarn and Murudeshwar. But this too had not been met, Mr. Dias said.
President of the Udupi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Prasadraj Kanchan said that the chamber was delighted that the Yashwanthpur-Mangalore train had been extended to Karwar. The chamber had submitted a memorandum to the Railway Ministry on this issue.
In a press release, D.V. Sadananda Gowda, Udupi-Chikmagalur MP, said that the budget had not given adequate importance to Karnataka. The Yashwanthpur -Mangalore tri-weekly day train had been extended to Karwar. He would strive to see that this train became a daily. The demands for a separate railway division in Mangalore and modernisation of Udupi and Mangalore railway stations had not been fulfilled. Only Rs. 10 crore had been earmarked for laying track on the Kadur-Chikmagalur section. This was an ordinary budget, he added.

Krishnamoorthy K March 1st, 2011, 12:44 PM The State government’s ambitious plans to set up biotech park has not taken off due to procedural delays.
According to Karnataka Biotechnology Vision Group Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw the government’s move to provide biotechnology sector a fillip through BT parks has hit roadblock weighed down by procedural requirements.
Shaw lamented that several governmental issues are acting as pinpricks in the selection of preferred contractors to kick-off the parks. “We are still hopeful it will take off soon. Tendering process for third time is on. We hope it will be third time lucky,” she added.
Addressing a workshop on Millennium Biotech Policy - II, Shaw said even the incubtion centre, which along with BT parks, was part of earlier policy, have not borne desired results. “While the incubation centre has begun, we, however, do need a development partner for BT park,” she added.
Stating that integrated biotech clusters such as agri-biotech, industrial biotech etc., are need of the hour, Shaw said it is proposed to extend clusters concept State-wise to other cities such as Manipal following initiatives in Mysore, Dharwad and Mangalore taken up on public-private partnership basis.
Pointing out that revised and modified Millennium Biotech Policy - II was brought out to address the needs of the sector in skill and capacity building, she said the focus is on BT education and making young people employable, as part of which BT finishing schools was conceived.
Stating that this was academia-industry initiative, Shaw said 12 biotechnology finishing schools are proposed as part of skill building programme as also increasing capacity of employable youth in the State in the sector. A Masters Programme in Bioinformatics would begin soon, she added.
Shaw also stressed the need to encourage innovation in bio technology by providing fillip to innovative entrepreneurnial initiatives through VC funding and other support. State IT, BT & S&T Principal Secretary Ashok Kumar Manoli initiated the proceedings with his opening remarks.

Krishnamoorthy K March 4th, 2011, 02:04 PM Udupi, 01 March 2011: Udupi CMC President Kiran Kumar, at the monthly meeting held here on Monday, refused to withdraw the parking fees being levied on the vehicles parked in front of the shops and business outfits. Raising the issue Congress Councillor Jayananda alleged that the fees levied on the parked vehicles (Rs 5 for four wheelers and Rs 2 for two wheelers) were too heavy and the municipality did not provide any facility for the same.
In his reply Kiran Kumar took Jayananda to task for failing to attend the meeting convened by the Deputy Commissioner to discuss the same. “The decision has been approved by both DC and the RTO. Moreover, it brings income to the Municipality”, he said adding, “if a person is fined for parking in front of a shop, shop owner is morally responsible. Because, it is his responsibility to provide for parking facility to his customers.”
BJP Councillor MR Pai alleged the press and the media for pointing at the Municipality, for the release of waste water by the Srikrishna Temple to the open drain. “Media blames the Udupi CMC for the leakage of filthy water from the Nittur waste water recycling plant, to the Kalmadi river and for the non functioning of street lights on the Udupi-Kalsanka- Kadiyali road. Another BJP councilor Shyamprasad Kudwa supported him.
Kiran Kumar said that the ongoing works of National Highway widening had caused the leakage of filthy water in to the Kalmadi river. Setting right the thing would require Rs 7 crores. A CMC delegation had met the Minister for Highways Jithin Prasad during his recent visit to Udupi and demanded the grant for the same.
At this juncture Jayananda alleged that the leakage had been there since 2-3 years. Kiran Kumar also assured former President Dinkar Shetty, who raised the issue of release of filthy water in to the open drain by the Srikrishna Temple, of stern action and instructed the officials to serve a notice immediately.
At the meeting President Kiran Kumar threatened the contractors who have bagged the tender for the sanctioned works and did not start. He said that he would call a meeting of the contractors on Mar 3 and if they fail to reply positively, their licensees would be forfeited. Commissioner Gokuldas Nayak was present.

The vehicle owners think that they can use government land freely for parking (many times park on footpath at the cost of pedestrians). One car occupies more than 30 square feet area. With this much area one can do a business of Rs. 20,000 per month on average. In other words parking causes a loss of Rs. 700 per car per day to the government. (This is considering that a single floor building in same space, but if we assume multistorey building then the loss would be the one multiplied this figure by number of floors.) How much government is charging? Instead of providing subsidy to poor government is giving subsidy to rich car owners.
The argument that shop keepers should be charged instead of the person who is parking is ridiculus. Who is parking on government land? People should be made to understand that doing a business with shops in buildings without parking facility will be costly. They are paying more for the items they purchase in shops in these buildings as parking fees. In Mangalore thread I have listed a few rules what educated car owners should do.
How to make construction of car parking complexes or basement parking a profitable business? Answer is definitely, parking of cars in government land should cost more than what one earns by doing a business in the same size of land.
It is ridiculous that now a days politicians have started openly siding with rich car owners instead of fighting for rights of poor pedestrians and other needs of poor.
Under able leadership of Dr. Acharya Udupi is implementing progressive rules. Kudos! But, alas Yenklena Kudla!

Krishnamoorthy K March 5th, 2011, 11:19 AM Udupi: Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) Ravindra said on Friday that the UPCL was one of the most environment-friendly power plants. Speaking an interaction programme organised by the Pejawar swamiji to discuss issues related to the thermal plant of UPCL, Mr. Ravindra said the promoters of UPCL, Lanco Group had proven expertise in power generation. All power projects of Lanco had been given certificates for quality and environmental safeguards.
The UPCL had been using advanced technology for environmental protection such as Electro Static Precipitators, FGD (flue gas desulpurisation), and use of 100 per cent imported coal which contained lower ash. “There is a wrong impression that the UPCL was dumping the ash into the sea. The UPCL is giving priority to environmental safeguards,” Mr. Ravindra said.
UPCL Vice-President (Corporate Affairs) K. Kishore Alva, Deputy General Manager (Environment, Health and Safety) Srinivas Reddy, Deputy General Manager (Public Relations) Girish Navada and Senior Manager (Projects) Sudarshan Prasad were present.

Mangalore, March 8: The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will take up four laning of 190 kms on NH-17 from Kundapur to Goa border. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Rs 1,200 crore plan was prepared by Span Consultants Pvt Ltd.
http://www.mangaloretoday.com/uploaded/Kundapura%201%20copy.jpg
The Request for Qualification (RFQ) process or tendering is likely to be initiated by NHAI by mid-2011. This four-laning is being done under the National Highway Development Project (NHDP) Phase III, on Build Operate Transfer (BOT) Toll basis.
Currently, the four laning of Surathkal to Kundapur is in progress and when Kundapur-Goa section is complete, it will offer users a seamless driving experience plus savings in terms of time and fuel.
NHAI sources said the project may be taken up as a single package of 190 kms or in two packages depending upon the viability.
RFQ is a process to select and shortlist pre-qualified applications for the bid stage or to appoint the selected bidder for the projects. After shortlisting applicants, the NHAI asks for Request for Proposals (RFP) from bidders and later the bidder offering the lowest amount of grant sought from authority or the highest premium / revenue shared offer would be selected.
The whole project is through Private-Public-Partnership (PPP). The Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) lease period will be determined later by the planning committee depending upon the return on investment. Usually, the project deadline for such projects is 30 months.
The DFR indicates that there is a need to widen the existing road as the Average Daily Traffic (ADT), between Kundapur-Goa border is 14,191 passenger car units (PCU) of tollable traffic (only four-wheelers are tollable). The total traffic on this route is a little more than 17,000 PCU.

Krishnamoorthy K March 10th, 2011, 02:44 PM Udupi: The coal-based thermal plant of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) will wreak havoc on the environment in Udupi district and should be closed down, said Vijaykumar Hegde, Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) district unit president, here on Tuesday.
He was speaking at a dharna organised by the youth wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here.
The dharna was supported by progressive groups such as the Students Islamic Organisation of India, Karnataka Komu Sauharda Vedike, District Minorities Forum, Zilla Muslim Okkoota, Catholic Sabha, Christa Okkoota and Maitri Yuvak Mandal.
Mr. Hegde said Udupi is an eco-sensitive district. The thermal plant had been set up at Yellur in Udupi district without following proper norms such as the study of carrying capacity of the district, environmental impact assessment and public hearing. As a result, there were problems such as fly ash, bottom ash, and saline water from the thermal plant.
There was dense fog in the areas surrounding the thermal plant in the mornings. There had been a rise in the temperature in the area. It was only after intense protest by KRRS at the power house of the UPCL near Padubidri on March 4 that the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board had taken serious note of the pollution by UPCL.
The thermal plant had been affecting agriculture in about 35,000 acres of land around it. It had affected jasmine cultivation in the area. The KRRS had been conducting house-to-house survey to study the damage done to agriculture by the plant. Nearly 250 wells in the region had been contaminated.
The UPCL had been using saline water for the disposal of bottom ash. “These are the problems only after a part of the project has become operational. Once the project becomes fully operational, the scale of problems can be imagined,” he said.
All political parties were supporting the UPCL. “But the people of the district cannot be fooled any longer,” Mr. Hegde said.
President of Dakshina Kannada unit of the Youth Wing of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Mohammed Kunhi said that leaders of the movement against the thermal plant should be on guard against the moves of the company and politicians to divide it.
Secretary of State unit of Humanitarian Relief Society Akbar Ali and writer Hayavadana Moodusagri were present.
The protesters took out a rally from the Service Bus Stand to the Deputy Commissioner's office.
Air polluted
The former MLA and president of UPCL Hatao Andolana Samiti U.R. Sabhapathi said on Monday that for the last two days, there was dense fog from Kaup to Mulki from midnight to seven in the morning due to the smoke coming from the chimney of the thermal plant of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL).
In a press release issued here, Mr. Sabhapathi said that the smoke from the chimney instead of going up, was getting collected below, creating the fog. This had frightened the people of the region. The Government should take immediate action on this matter.
Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa had on Tuesday said in Bangalore that the Government would solve the problems being caused by the thermal plant of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd. By this statement, the State Government had finally agreed to the fact that the thermal plant of UPCL was damaging agriculture, polluting water and creating health problems, the release added.

‘Does a small city like Udupi require so many traffic lights?'
http://www.hindu.com/2011/04/05/images/2011040562250301.jpg
Adorning roads: The traffic signal light functioning as blinkers at the Taluk Office Circle in Udupi .
Udupi: Although traffic signal lights were installed at 10 places in Udupi city a year ago, they are functioning only at two places.
The installation of the signal lights has not been without controversy. When they were installed, the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) was the first to raise objections on the grounds that the CMC was not taken into confidence by the district police and that the installation was not done in a scientific manner.
Traffic signal lights had been installed in places such as Kinnimulki, Taluk Office Circle, Diana Circle, Hanuman Circle, Kalasanka, Ambalpady Junction and Karavali Junction in Udupi; and Syndicate Circle, Tiger Circle and MIT Cross in Manipal. Of these signal lights, only two — Karavali Junction and Diana Circle — are working.
According to sources in traffic police, since the Diana Circle had not been widened, the traffic signal lights at Taluk Office Circle and Hanuman Circle could not be activated.
The traffic signal at Kalsanka could be activated only after the Gundibail-Kalsanka Road was widened.
The traffic signal at Kinnimulki was not activated as it had lesser vehicle density. Hence only blinkers (that is the blinking of yellow lights) were on at the remaining eight places, the sources said.
Pedestrian signal lights had not been installed at any of the 10 places which had traffic signals. Udupi CMC president Kiran Kumar told The Hindu that “the traffic signal lights are totally anti-pedestrian. When and how should the pedestrians cross the roads at these places?”. At the Karavali Junction, where the traffic signal lights were functioning, there was no ‘Free Left' turn. This confused vehicle drivers, he said.
Another criticism was that there were five places with traffic signal lights from Kinnimulki to Service Bus Stand.
Mr. Kumar said should all the signal lights be activated, it would take 15 or 20 minutes for buses to travel from Kinnimulki to Service Bus Stand instead of 10 minutes now. “Does a small city like Udupi require so many traffic signal lights? The traffic police have staff shortage. They cannot man all the 10 places,” he said.
Superintendent of Police Y.S. Ravikumar said: “We will study the issue. All other authorities would be consulted before taking any decision on this matter”.
This is not the first time traffic signals have run into rough weather.
Traffic signals were first installed in the city 10 years ago by the Udupi CMC then ruled by the Congress. They functioned for a very brief period and were later removed.

Agriculture gets Rs. 568 crore, Rs. 107 crore more than last year
Udupi: Udupi Zilla Panchayat chief executive officer N. Rajashekhar released the District Credit Plan for Udupi district which projects an outlay of Rs. 2,029 crore for the financial year 2011-2012 here on Friday.
The Plan was drafted by SyndicateBank, the lead bank of the district, by consolidating the branch credit plans of 270 branches of 28 banks operating in the district.
Mr. Rajashekar said the credit plan was development-oriented as 28 per cent of the outlay went to the agriculture sector and 32 per cent to tertiary sector comprising mainly of road transport, business, education, housing, and micro credit lending, which had high potential for generating employment.
K. Santosh Kamath, General Manager, SyndicateBank, Regional Office, said the share of priority sector in the District Credit Plan was Rs.1,555 crore, which accounted for 77 per cent of the outlay.
He said the Credit Plan would give impetus to agriculture as a substantial amount had been allotted to it.
The allocation to agriculture sector was Rs. 568 crore, which was Rs. 107 crore more than last year.
Of Rs. 568 crore, a lion's share of Rs. 241 crore had been earmarked for crop production purposes, which was 54 per cent more than the allocation made in the previous fiscal.

engineer.akash April 14th, 2011, 07:07 PM Udupi still waiting for a KSRTC bus-stand

It functions from a small complex build by the CMC
200 KSRTC buses arrive and leave the town daily
A bus-stand will be built at a cost of Rs. 20 crore
Udupi: Though Udupi became a district headquarters 14 years ago, it still does not have a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus-stand.
As many as 200 buses arrive and leave the temple town daily. The KSRTC bus-stand functions from a small complex constructed by the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) under the Karnataka Urban Development and Coastal Environment Project (KUDCEMP).
But it has space only for a few buses. Besides, KSRTC buses have to jostle for space with private buses. The KSRTC pays a rent of Rs. 2 a bus to the CMC. There is no adequate seating arrangement for passengers in this bus-stand. There is no restroom for KSRTC crew. A small one-room office is at the KUDCEMP bus-stand. This office also serves as a reservation counter.
A KSRTC official said that drivers and conductors slept in the same room. “Though we collect lakhs of rupees at the reservation counter, there is hardly any security there,” he added.
The KSRTC has no depot in Udupi either. Because of this, buses are found parked near the Inspection Bungalow or Ajjarkad.
The official said there was no parking facility for two Bangalore-Udupi buses and one Udupi-Mysore bus. Hence, they were being parked near the Inspection Bungalow. “A bus-stand and depot is a must here,” he added.
The government's plan to build a bus-stand on three acres of land at Bannanje is yet to be implemented.
Raghupati Bhat, MLA, said that the land at Bannanje was under the Public Works Department. A note had been sent to the State Cabinet to take steps to transfer this land to the KSRTC. “The land transfer process may take a month. A bus-stand will be built at a cost of Rs. 20 crore. A 3.5-acre plot has been identified for a depot at Kodankur,” Mr. Bhat said.

Kadri,
Thanks for awesome pics. I feel there are few wastes thrown in the bus stand. Other parts of the city is very clean.
ananda.padebettu May 3rd, 2011, 02:28 PM UDUPI: The City Muncipal Council President Kiran Kumar said that the CMC wants to utilise the solid waste effectively in the city. Hence, the CMC is planning to produce electricity from solid waste.
Speaking at the CMC meeting, he said that the Udupi CMC has won Green Leaf Award for effective disposal of waste. The CMC has already started door-to-door collection of waste from houses in few wards. The CMC is not getting co-operation from the public for cent per cent management of sold waste.
The President urged the National Highway officials to take measures to repair the drainage that have been blocked in the course of road widening process. If the drainage remain blocked, then it may become disastrous during monsoon.
He was replying to the query raised by the opposition party member Jayanand on the adversities created by underground drainage and potholes during rainy season.
Tough time for residents
He said residents in Udupi will have to face tough time if the proposed works of National Highway road widening remains incomplete during monsoon. Currently, the roads at Nittur are being widened and the drainage on adjacent sides have been blocked for the purpose, he added.
House tax
Kiran Kumar said that an announcement will be made in newspapers regarding the revised tariffs of house tax. Commissioner Gokuldas Nayak informed that as per the guidelines there is provision to hike about 15 to 30 per cent once in three year.
Illegal ads
Member Mahesh Takur expressed concern over the mushrooming of illegal advertisement hoarding on either side of Udupi-Manipal stretch. President said that meeting of the advertisers will be convened and all related issues will be discussed. Whoever fails to attend the meet, their names will be removed from the list of advertisers, he said.
Kiran Kumar informed that a squad has been formed to look into the irregularities in the license fee and taxes. The squad will visit every shop and owners will be fined for irregular payment of tax and loopholes in the licenses, he said.

UDUPI: Udupi CMC president Kirankumar conceded that the solid waste management system at Karval near Alevoor has failed to meet expectations, as the CMC had to confront many problems while dealing with the issue. Kirankumar, presiding over the monthly meeting held on Saturday said that legal problems faced by the CMC initially and lack of public support in collecting solid waste were the main reasons for the slow progress.
However, Udupi CMC is also planning to generate power out of the solid waste in the long run. Some companies have come forward and the CMC is negotiating with them, he said.
Another important point discussed at the meeting was the damage done to UGD and water management system and water supply station situated near Karavali Junciton on the NH 17, due to the four-lane road widening work. Kirankumar said the shifting of these systems would cost the National Highway Authorities about Rs 6 crore and the CMC had already written to them and is yet to receive any response from them . At this juncture, opposition leader of CMC Jayananda (Congress) pointed out that he has valid information from the Union government that the proposal has been cleared and shifting work would be taken up shortly.

In progress:Four-lane highway development work under progress near Kundapur on NH 66.
MANGALORE: Men and machines engaged in widening the National Highway No. 66 (formerly NH 17) between Kundapur and Surathkal have delivered about 20 km of new road that facilitate smooth journey.
Navayuga Udupi Tollway Pvt. Ltd. (NUTPL) is widening the 90-km long Kundapur-Surathkal and Nanthoor Junction-Talapady stretches on the highway to accommodate movement of four-lane traffic at speeds ranging from 80 km to 100 km.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken up the widening under phase III of the National Highways Development Project (NHDP).
P.N. Gawasane, project director, NHAI, Mangalore, told The Hindu during a tour of the project that Pangala bridge on the highway in Udupi district would be completely abandoned.
A new six-lane bridge on a new alignment was being built there. Works of other major bridges like Pavanje, Shambhavi, Mabukala, and Netravati were under progress at different stages. The project director said the right of way (total width of the highway including additional facilities) for 5-km stretch in Kundapur town and for 2-km stretch in Kota would be restricted to 45 metres according to the original plan of the project. In other stretches, the highway would have 60 metre right of way according to the original plan.
He said the total width of the highway would be lesser in two towns considering the thick density of properties there. Land for constructing bypass in the two towns in proper alignment was not available. Hence the NHAI was not building bypass in the towns. This had been decided in the original plan of the project and was not altered recently.
Mr. Gawasane made it clear that although the total width would be less for 7-km-long stretch, it would not change the road dimension for the traffic movement. It was because the width of the carriage way (tarred road on which vehicles ply) would be the same along the 90-km. stretch. The highway would have 8.75 metre wide carriage way (asphalt road) on either side.
The median width along 7-km stretch would be reduced to maintain uniformity in tar road width. Median would be five-metre wide in other locations.
He said the highway was being designed for maintaining 100 km per hour speed between Kundapur and Talapady and 80 kmph speed between Nanthoor Junction and Talapady.
In some locations, the level of the highway was being raised while in some locations it was being lowered by cutting hills. It was to maintain uniformity in design for speed.
For example, a hillock near Mukka was being cut and the new stretch of the highway was at the lower level than the old one.
If the stretch was widened to the level of existing highway without cutting the hillock the speed of vehicles would come down.

Krishnamoorthy K May 26th, 2011, 08:25 AM Udupi: With the widening of the busy Udupi-Manipal road in progress, almost all major bus stands on the entire stretch were razed down to facilitate the widening works. The Udupi-Manipal stretch is part of the Malpe-Molakalmuru State Highway 25.
In the scorching mid-May heat, there was no shelter for passengers waiting for the commuters. It is not just the bus-stands even the trees in the nearby area have been brought down. Hence there was no shade at all from the blazing sun for the people waiting for the buses.
The important stops where previously there were bus-stands and where there is none now on the Udupi-Manipal Road are: Kadiyali, Sharada Mantapa, MGM College (only on one side), and Lakshmindra Nagara. Besides, there were no bus stands at Kalsanka, MGM Ladies Hostel, and Railway Station Cross Road.
General Secretary of Udupi Zilla Nagarika Samiti Nityananda Volakadu said with the frequency of city buses declining during non-peak hours, passengers have to wait in the scorching sun. “During afternoons, it is difficult for the people to stand in the sizzling heat and wait for the buses,” he said.
President of Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) Kiran Kumar told The Hindu that the Public Works Department (PWD), which was carrying out the widening works, was yet to hand over the street lights installed at the centre of the road to the CMC. “This has stalled the construction of the bus stands,” he added.
The CMC would identify the spots where the bus stands would have to come up, within a week. “Already four advertising firms have come forward to take up the construction of the bus-stands,” Mr. Kumar said.
Executive Engineer of Public Works Department Suresh Shetty said the CMC would have to take permission from the department for construction of the bus-stands. But the PWD would not object to it, he said.
The Hindu (http://www.hindu.com/2011/05/26/stories/2011052664050300.htm)
mangalore mania June 4th, 2011, 01:59 AM Udupi: By this time next year, a new and modern fish market will be ready here if everything goes according to the plan of the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC).
The main fish market on 35 cents of land is on Poornaprajna College Road. There are four chicken and four mutton stalls in the market. Fisherwomen sell fish in old stalls in this market. There is no place to park four-wheelers.
But all this is set to change. The CMC has submitted a Rs. 2-crore proposal to the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) through the Karavali Karnataka Development Authority (KKDA).
Work on the new market is expected to start within a month and it will be completed in a year. While 90 per cent of the fund will be provided by the NFDB, five per cent each will be given by the State Government and the CMC.
As per the proposal, a two-storey structure will be constructed. The fish market will in the basement of the building. It will be a closed one with ample grilled ventilation, keeping away birds and animals. “It will be a sheltered market,” according to CMC Commissioner Gokuldas Nayak.
There will be provision for 120 fisherwomen to sell fish in the new market. A granite platform with a steel tray will be provided to display fish. Underneath the platform, there will be space to keep ice boxes. In between two fisherwomen, there will be a partition of 1.5 ft creating separate cubicles. The market will have provision for only one or two chicken and mutton stalls. The market will be easier to clean it after the day's work.
“There will be provision for easier flow of water to facilitate cleanliness,” Mr. Nayak said. On the ground floor of the market, there will be provision for parking 35 cars and 50 two-wheelers. In addition, there will be two vegetable shops on this floor.
The present fish market will be shifted to the Beedinagudde area in the city for a year to facilitate construction of the new market.

Krishnamoorthy K June 9th, 2011, 03:12 PM Udupi, 08 June 2011: If everything goes as per the plan, then a green park similar to Kabban Park, Lal Bagh will emerge in Udupi within one year! said Manjunatha Shetty Asst. Forest Officer of Kundapura Sub Division, while he briefed on the project details of this year at forest department Baindur Sarpamane nursery.
Government has given instructions to construct “Urban Tree Parks” in all the districts of the states. Accordingly in Udupi District, at Udupi Taluk, 111 acre land is identified in Badagubettu for urban tree park. Here varieties of trees similar to Kabban park and Lal bagh will be grown, he said.
Similarly it is already decided to construct “Daivivana” near Kollur, next to Balkatta Hole. Here as mentioned it the Shastra; Nakshathra vana, Rashi vana, Navagraha vana will be established, he said.
A target is set to plant 15 lakhs various kind of plants in total 886 hectare area in the District this year. From the department already 12 lakhs saplings have been already made ready at 4 nurseries and more 3 lakhs saplings are getting ready. Also, a target is set for plating 6400 various plants on the sides of road at 32 km length.
There should be 33% greenery on earth, but currently it is not so much. In order to fulfil this need the state government is creating the projects to encourage the growers of greenery. Accordingly the saplings are freely distributed to farmers to plant them in their land. Every plant grown by the farmers will be given each Rs. 10, 15 and 20 as encouragement amount in the first 3 years, by the government, he said.
At Vothnene the forest department has 550 acre land, out of which half of the land was requested by Tourism department for Eco tourism, Coastal Security department for their training centre, helipad and Jungle lodges, resorts for their projects, but the forest department did not agree for this, he said.
On this occasion Kundapura zone forest Conservation Officer Sadananda, Baindur zone forest Conservation Officer Brijesh Vinaykumar and Udupi zone forest Conservation Officer Prakash Poojary were present.

Cement unitACC Ltd, India’s largest manufacturer of cement, plans to expand its capacity in Karnataka by setting up a 1-million tonne per annum (mtpa) fly ash-based Portland Pozzolana unit in the coastal area. The company plans to invest Rs 280 crore to set up the plant, its fifth in the state. “We have signed the (deal) with the state government and are working out the specific details like capacity, investment and land availability before going to the board for final approval,” P N Iyer, director, sales, south, told Business Standard.
ACC is looking for land in Yellur and Padebettu villages in Udupi district, close to the Udupi Power project, from where it wishes to source fly ash. The Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) has identified 71.19 acres of land in these villages.
Another 94 acres of private land has also been identified and the final notification for acquisition is yet to be issued, state government sources said.
“We have a very good market in coastal Karnataka and the new plant will help us serve the local market effectively,” Iyer said. ACC’s current installed capacity in the country is 30 mtpa. It has 16 cement factories and 40 ready-mix concrete making units. Its Wadi plant in Gulbarga district has the single largest cement kiln in the world, of 13,000 tonnes a day.

mangalore mania June 12th, 2011, 07:44 PM The government will take up development work at a cost of Rs 55 lakh in Kaup beach. The work will be undertaken by the Nirmithi Kendra of Udupi.
Speaking to City Herald, Nirmithi Kendra Manager Arun Kumar said the development works aim at providing basic facilities at the beach. The work will commence after the monsoon. The work includes providing lighting facilities, vehicle parking facilities and a small bridge near the rocks. It also includes providing road connectivity to the beach, he added.
About Kaup beach
Some of the beaches are of virgin in nature and are free from the hustle and bustle of the daily affairs. One can only hear the sound of the waves, feel the cool touch of the tropical breeze and rediscover yourself. One such beach is Kaup which is situated 20 km from Udupi on National Highway 66 (formerly NH 17).
The beach is covered by greenery on one side. The cool breeze that blows across the beach refreshes you from your tiredness.
This can be a perfect weekend spot as you can take a relaxing sunbath or stroll across the sands. One can also enjoy a camel ride in the evening at the beach. The beach is also known for its Light House. A view of the Light House built on a huge rock is really stunning. The beach with 100 ft high Light House on the rocks is a photographer’s paradise. The beach has a couple of huge rocks lining the shore. The Light House is the lonely building in the middle of the sea to direct the navigators and warn them against the treacherous shore lines.
The Light House tower was built in 1901 on a 12 metre high rock. The light source with 55 mm burner was commissioned in the same year. This entire equipment was provided by M/s Chance Bros Birmingham. Prior to independence, the region was part of the princely state of Mysore.
Visitors are allowed inside the Light House between 4 pm and 6 pm at a nominal fee per head. The timing varies every month depending on the sunset as the halogen light of the lighthouse is switched on only after the sunset. Once the light starts beaming out its rays, visitors are not allowed.
A magnificent view of the sunset from the Light House where the sea water turns emerald green and the horizon becomes a brew of red and orange is an ecstatic vision. This provides unlimited and uninterrupted panoramic sight.

Tuluva.Kannadiga June 13th, 2011, 12:39 AM Amazing Pics Avi... truly the best place in india for quality education.. manipal is growing at an unbelievable pace.. Apartments are coming up even in places like perampalli. There are rumours goin around that the manipal ambagilu road would be widened and converted into a 4 lane road, so that ppl comin from kundapur side can directly reach the DC office without any hassles. The land prices have sky rocketed, even in places like ambagilu perampalli. I am sure in the days to come we will find lotsa highrise apartments in udupi-manipal main road and manipal-ambagilu road.
I hope they can maintain the natural beauty. I am for progress, but not at the cost of knocking down trees and putting up ugly buildings

s.yogendra,
Great news, small step but very positive!
I heard there is a massive afforestation / reforestation program being launched for much of India ... does anyone have more details about this? I hope Udupi and Mangalore will benefit from this. I remember when I was a little kid, this region was extremely beautiful ... paradise on Earth. I was proud to be part of the region. BTW the women were hot too ! :) I used to travel from Mangalore to Bombay along the coast and was astonished of the natural beauty. I WAS very proud.
I came back to visit in 2005 and was very disappointed to see loss of greenery throughout Udupi and Mangalore  I am not sure of other areas along the coastal India, but in the Karnataka coast, I noticed the section from Mangalore to Udupi city along the coast got hit hard the most with deforestation and uncontrolled development. I personally think India is developing fast and should be, but still has long way to go. I am for development but again not at the expense of the environment. I hope this "massive afforestation or reforestation will bring back the greenery and natural beauty I once enjoyed as a kid and bring my own kids to see .

NH 66 project kills 18,000 trees (http://www.deccanchronicle.com/channels/cities/bengaluru/nh-66-project-kills-18000-trees-061)
The four laning of National Highway 66 has proved costly — 18,000 trees were lost, angering environmentalists who are now demanding that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) plant saplings along the 90 km stretch of the new look highway, from Kerala to Nanthoor in Mangalore and from Surathkal to Kundapur, once it is ready.
While acknowledging that many trees that were cut in Kundapur, Kota, Kaup and Padubidri were several centuries old, NHAI officers say they had no option but to axe them.

The idol of mythical unicorn found at Kalya village near Karkala.
Udupi: A rare idol of mythical unicorn has been found at Kalya near Nitte in Karkala taluk of Udupi district.
T. Murgeshi, lecturer in the Department of Ancient History and Archaeology at MSRS College, Shirva, and S.A. Krishnayya, folklore expert, told presspersons here on Monday that the idol was 29 cm long, 18 cm in width and seven centimetres thick.
The left front and rear leg of the unicorn was mutilated, but right front leg was designed like an elephant leg. The right rear leg looked like a bull's leg. The idol has a horse face and on the first glance looked like a horse but on closer examination one could find a composition of different animals.
“At the centre of its head, there is broken unicorn which is a major symbol of this mythical animal. It appears to be representing the fertility cult. Interestingly, the unicorn horse is found in the emblem of Sri Dharmasthala. Locally it is known as ‘Naga Bermar', who was a fertility god”, he said.
As regards, the style of sculpture of the idol, it belonged either to 12th century or 13th century.
“It (the idol) is the only one of its kind found in the country so far,” Mr. Murugeshi said.
He said many temples were renovated in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts.
During the process of renovation, many important, and rare idols, and inscriptions of historic value (not of religious value) were getting thrown into the nearby rivers or rivulets.
Those renovating the temples should make it a point to call archaeologists so that they could document such idols, Mr. Murugeshi said.

Yes I agree,
Sorry, I did not mean to go off topic earlier, guess I was just being a guy.
We all know India has a huge population with large population density. The country is blessed with abundant natural resources, but the large populations offsets that. As we already know, the country is very diverse ...India is made up of many different races, ethnicity, languages, religious groups all living together more or less harmoniously. It has one of the most diverse topography in the world ...but because of its huge population and population density, the Government and the people of India have a huge task of managing the natural resources ... means they have to be efficient managers to protect the natural resources. I live in Canada, one the most sparsely populated country on Earth, even then environmental issues arise .. I am trying to imagine India's situation:eek:. Kudos to the Indian government in making the effort to improve the environment, it is a daunting task, but I know Indians can do it, they are well educated and very professional in whatever task they set out to
Urban centers are urban centers .. some cities are greener than others. With roads, buildings, and other infrastructure there will be little space for trees, shrubs and grass. We try to make it greener but it is difficult, but not impossible, though. Parks will help.
I don't know what the Indian Goverment has in mind, but I believe reforestation and afforestation should consists of setting up large Green Belts between urban centers. for example between Mangalore and Mulki they should have dense forest coverage , likewise between Udupi and Mulki, between Udupi and Kundapur and betwen Udupi and Karkala, etc. Setting up more wildlife sanctuaries would be great as well.

The Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers Societies' Union Ltd has urged the Karnataka Government to allot land for the expansion of its dairy in Udupi district.
Speaking at the launch of Nandini Bite – produced at the Mangalore dairy of the cooperative – Mr Raviraj Hegde, President of the Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers' Societies' Union, said that the production capacity of Manipal dairy in Udupi district is 60,000 litres of milk a day.
However, he said, there is demand for more than one lakh litres of milk a day in the region. There is no scope for the expansion of dairy in Manipal. Considering this and keeping future demand in mind, Mr Hegde said, it is essential to expand the capacity in Udupi district to 1.5 lakh litres a day. The State Government should allot at least 10 acres in Udupi district for a new dairy, he said.
Dr V.S. Acharya, Udupi district in-charge Minister, said that the Government will look into the matter of the expansion of the facility in Udupi district.
He launched Nandini Bite in Mangalore market.
Dr Acharya said new innovations in dairy segment will help develop new products and market. Nandini Bite is mix of Mysore pak and chocolate, he added.
Mr Hegde said that there is good demand for Nandini Bite in the market. Nearly 100 kg a day can be produced at the Mangalore dairy.
Mr Hegde said that Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers Societies' Union has implemented a scheme for better calf-rearing practices under its jurisdiction. The scheme, to be extended for rearing nearly 5000 calves in the region, will help increase milk production in the region, he said.

Udupi, Jun 24 (The Hindu): The apprehension that the front portion of the house where the Jnanpith Award-winner, the late Kota Shivaram Karanth (1902-1997) was born, would be demolished during the widening of the National Highway 66 (17) at Kota village in the district, has raised hackles in literary circles here.
The first objection to this move came during the seventh Udupi District Kannada Sahitya Sammelan held in Kundapur on May 17 and 18.
Writer and sammelan president A.S.N. Hebbar urged the Union and State governments to protect the house in which the legendary writer was born in Kota.
President of Suhasam Literary Organisation H. Shantharaj Aithal told The Hindu on Wednesday that the front portion of the house, where Karanth was born, would be lost during the widening of the highway. This should not be allowed.
“When the houses where litterateurs such as Kuvempu and Da. Ra. Bendre were born, have been retained as heritage assets, the same rule should apply to the house at Kota. This is essential as the word ‘Kota' figures in the name of Shivaram Karanth,” he said.
Another factor is that Sri Hiremahalingeshwara Temple is located in front of the house.
“The temple should also be saved. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) can modify the design of the highway or construct a flyover to protect both the house and the temple,” Mr. Aithal said.
Writer Malini Mallya said a proposal to build a memorial for Karanth on the premises of the house at Kota mooted 10 years ago could not materialise for various reasons. “However, now the Kotathattu Gram Panchayat is constructing a nice memorial for Karanth in Kota. I am glad the memorial is coming up in his birthplace”, Ms. Mallya said.
Report awaited
An officer of the NHAI, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said a small front portion of the birth-house was likely to be demolished during the widening of the highway. But this was would depend on the report of the Assistant Commissioner of Kundapur Sub-Division.
“The NHAI will consult the district in-charge Minister V.S. Acharya and other elected representatives before taking any decision,” the officer said.
Caretaker of the house Rama Mogera said that an old wall clock, a swing, the room where Karanth was born, agricultural equipment used by Karanth's father Shesha Karanth, were still preserved in the house.
The house went to Shivaram Karanth's younger brother late Narasimha Karanth during division of property in the family. At present, the house belonged by Sumathi Karanth, daughter-in-law of Narasimha Karanth, he said.

Tough luck. Highway passes between Sri Hiremahalingeshwara Temple [couple of centuries old] and Karanth's Ancestral House [which is also pretty old]. Looks like part of the temple and Karanth's house will be demolished.
In fact, half of Kota town may disappear [unlike Saligrama and Koteshwar there is no bypass here].
