There was talk of the first few rows of seats behind each goal being able to retract under the rest of the stand - so for football the capacity would be slightly higher, and for rugby the 'end-zone' would face up to a 6 foot high wall before the first row of seats.

I hope they call themselves the Melbourne/Victorian 'Hooligans.' A great soccer nickname.
With any luck by then they get a good coach who teaches them to play without this long ball approach.

It will become a very busy stadium...

The rugby codes will use it during winter and soccer over the summer as the respective seasons don't currently overlap. The Asian Champions League (soccer) hold their group stages during winter and they're played midweek.

I dont know???????????

I havent heard about a super15 franchise for Melbourne in a while, even though I think it would do a whole lot better than the storm. You know of any news about that?

If Melbourne does get a team I cant see it playing anywhere but this stadium. I guess they would play alternate weekends or have A league games on lets say a Friday, and Super 15 games on a Sunday.

It will be quite a busy stadium with the second A league team and a union team.

A couple of weeks ago plans were mooted to expand the competition to 15 teams, with three "conferences" of 5 teams each. The new team would play in the Australian conference, but the franchise has yet to be decided, and it's not necessarily going to be in Australia. Melbourne has to be a good bet though.

Yeah melb just missed out to Perth if I remember correctly. The team is doing pretty well over there. Once they move into Members equity stadium the crowds will pick up again. I cant imagine watching a Rugby game at Subiaco.

So many private schools play union in melb that Im sure there will be a lot of support for the team. They get decent crowds to internationals and thats with what seems like zero media exposure.

The super 14 season is so short and is timed pretty well during the A league finals series and gap between the A league and NRL seasons, there shouldnt be too many clashes.

I guess they would have to dismantle the roof, take it off and add another tier. Pretty costly, but its done all over the world during stadium expansions.

1. add Melbourne
2. ditch South Africa
3. have 7 sides out of NZ

New home of the Melbourne Storm Rugby League team

http://werribeebears.com/attachments/Image/melbourne-storm-round-1-2008.jpg

The Melbourne Rectangular Stadium is a outdoor sports stadium currently under construction on Olympic Boulevard in inner Melbourne, Australia. Once completed, it will play host to Melbourne Storm (NRL) home games, aiming to fill in the gap in the city's sporting infrastructure for a state of the art, purpose built rectangular stadium ideal for rugby league/union. In line with most Australian cities, Melbourne's largest stadiums (the MCG and the Docklands Stadium) have oval fields best suited to Australian rules football and cricket, though they have both been used for soccer and rugby many times. The new stadium will feature a distinctive "Bioframe" design, with a geodesic dome roof covering much of the seating area, whilst still allowing light through to the pitch

capacity - 31,500

www.austadiums.com.au

Melbourne's state-of-the-art rectangular stadium could be expanded to seat up to 50,000 people if Australia lures the soccer World Cup.

With only months before soccer, rugby league and rugby union action kicks off at the $267.5 million stadium, about 60 per cent of the work has been done.

The finishing touches are expected to be applied this year before the stadium opens next year.

A battle of the codes is likely to erupt as tenants Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Storm go head-to-head for the right to play the first match before 31,000 fans.

But Major Events Minister Tim Pallas said the stadium could be revamped to seat 50,000 if Melbourne played a part in future major events such as a soccer World Cup.

"If Melbourne were to play a part in hosting a World Cup we could go to 50,000," he said.

Looks like the storm will get first use of the stadium.

Victoria is an AFL/cricket state, not a rugby state, so a large rectangular stadium isn't necessary.

http://images.theage.com.au/2009/07/24/648367/Stadium-420x0.jpg

THE bio-frame roof of Melbourne's new rectangular stadium is forming. The roof depends largely on itself for structural integrity, removing the need for pylons that would otherwise block spectators' views. The lightweight steel frame will be covered in panels of glass, metal and louvres. The $267 million stadium will be the home of Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Storm when it opens for games early next year.

...stadium will light up the city's skyline (http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,25868561-2862,00.html)

As this exclusive image reveals, the $267.5 million landmark taking shape at Olympic Park will shine brightly, thanks to a spectacular light design never before seen in Australia.

Major Projects Minister Tim Pallas will today announce that the stadium roof will be covered with thousands of LED lights that can shine in any colour and be programmed to display a variety of patterns and images.

Mr Pallas said the lighting scheme would put the 31,000-seat stadium on a par with Beijing's Olympic Games Water Cube and the 2006 soccer World Cup stadium in Munich.

Mr Pallas said the illuminated stadium would also be environmentally friendly, with the LED lights using about a 10th of the power required to floodlight the stadium.

Why would they need to tear down the stands? Wouldn't they just take out the track and stick footy posts up?You're talking about Australian Football, right (since Collingwood plays AFL)? Even if they remove the track and replace it with grass, the field will only have a maximum width of around 115m (space between the stands), or 25-30m narrower than a standard Aussie football pitch (140-145m including boundary line space; MCG is +/-150m wide... necessary for cricket???). Of course it's possible that this doesn't matter at all in case of a training pitch... I wouldn't know, I'm not very familiar with the rules, I've just seen 1 game on tv. Got my info from Wikipedia.

Nah, it wouldn't really matter. Skilled Stadium in Geelong is only 115m and that hosts 8 home and away matches a year, and would hold more if it had a bigger capacity.

kichigai
September 10th, 2009, 04:27 PM
But considering that Collingwood never play at Skilled Stadium why would they want to practice on an oval smaller than one they would ever play on? It doesn't make sense. Surely you would want to practice on an oval the same size as those you are actually going to play games on.

^^Well, the stadium is designed with a foundation to support any capacity expansion up to 50,000 seats.

Was pointed out in the Sydney Morning Herald yesterday that due to a planning error, whilst the foundations will support up to 50k, the design of the roof is such that it wouldn't be able to support itself if it were any larger. In order to replace it they'd have to build an entirely new roof, and it's estimated that it would be cheaper to simply build another stadium rather than expand!

So now Melbourne is gonna end up building a 50,000 seat white elephant rectangular stadium?! :bash:

Yes but it's a friggin huge oval. Not ideal for sports played on a rectangular pitch.

This is not the sort of roof design you want if you plan on expanding.

Keep it simple. A flat roof that could raised for larger events with extra seats added to the top tier.

This was applied at venues for Euro 2008.

What happens if Victoria get the new Super 15 franchise in 2011?

I dont know???????????

I havent heard about a super15 franchise for Melbourne in a while, even though I think it would do a whole lot better than the storm. You know of any news about that?

If Melbourne does get a team I cant see it playing anywhere but this stadium. I guess they would play alternate weekends or have A league games on lets say a Friday, and Super 15 games on a Sunday.

It will be quite a busy stadium with the second A league team and a union team.

Seems to be official now:

http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,26339154-5002381,00.html

The format of the competition is being changed too, so the new stadium will see games against all the other four Australian teams, plus two Kiwi and two South African sides...

Work it out...

Storm play 13 home, plus finals.
Victory play 14 home, plus finals
Heart to play 14, plus finals
Rebels Super 15 team, 8, plus a couple of finals.

minimum of 56 professional sporting events on it's calendar.

That still leaves around 300 days for turf growth. Not a problem in Melbourne. You need to keep the ground temperature at around 20 o C to keep grass growing. You just bung in ground heaters and sun lamps like over at Docklands.

THE TENANTS: RECTANGULAR STADIUM

Confirmed tenants: Melbourne Victory, Melbourne FC, Melbourne Storm.

All three clubs will have their administration at the new venue and will train there too. No longer room for any other tenants, so Melbourne Heart and the new Super Rugby franchise will have to find alternative administration and training venues.

Confirmed users:

Melbourne Storm

All NRL home games plus home finals.

Melbourne Victory

Some A-League home games. Each season for the next five years five A-League games, designated blockbusters, will be at Etihad as well as Asian Champions League games. Victory may also play glamour friendlies at Etihad depending on the opposition.

Negotiating:

Melbourne Heart

Plans to play all home A-League games at the venue, including finals if possible.

Football Federation Australia

No deals struck yet for Socceroos, Matildas or A-League finals matches.

To be confirmed: Melbourne Super 15 franchise. Set to play home games at the stadium.

BobDaBuilder
November 24th, 2009, 12:52 AM
Maybe around 30 to 40 events for the first year or so.

Docklands must be getting some of the fixtures. Personally I would move the lot. Docklands is too big for A-League and you want to use the English model of building demand by making seats scarce rather than the Italian model, which is the opposite.

The grass will be fine...

Storm play 12, plus finals
Victory play 9, (5 games plus finals and ACL at Etihad Stadium)
Hearts play 14, plus finals and ACL
Rebels play 8, plus finals

That's a minimum of 43 games spread over all 12 months as there's a small clash between the predominantly summer Football and winter Rugby(s) seasons.

Apparently it is not a done deal on the Victory moving there. I heard the Victory manager on the radio yesterday and they want Docklands to move the seating in more regularly. This could change everything. The MVFC have 4 games back to back in Jan/Feb and apparently they might do it again then.

Looks like the new Melbourne club may snare the V-Bomber too. With Skoko it might be like the old Melbourne Croatia in the NSL days. Get Tiatto, Simunic and Diduluca and it'll go close. That was the quality of the NSL line ups, has the A-League got that standard yet?

woozoo
December 2nd, 2009, 02:52 PM
I think people forget how good the NSL was. Chipperfield, Emerton, Slater, Viduka. And all the ethnic clubs had firey support. Shit chants and songs but firey support. There was some form of riot at every South Melbourne v Knights game I went to. Hell even the VPL clubs got firey support for the big teams (Preston Makedonja, Heidelberg UTD etc).

But I guess that had to end as people assimulated and lost their national roots through generational change.

And remember the A league is still young. Im sure some of the kids who play in this league will go on to be quality stars. Djite, Rukyavista and Troisi might not be at that level but in the future the quality will surely come.

Is it just me, or does this stadium seem like it wont be finished by May 7? For starters, they need to do all the concourse, gates all that kinda stuff, then they have to put on the triangle things which there are alot to do. To be honest images from 3 months ago seem to show not that much development and they have pretty much 2 and a half months. Am I wrong? I sure hope so but I'm not convinced. They have a pretty important match to play as its opener so you'd hope it's fixed in time.

From what I have heard, they are working 24/7 on it now to get it done by May.

The construction industry also slows down a lot over the Christmas/New Years period, so progress over the last 3 months isn't necessarily indicative of how fast things will go.

Those collums in the corners are an eyesore, they should either cover them up with advertising, put scoreboards on them or paint them, just something.

I like the green though especially the different colours. Looks good.

Red is not neutral, and yellow and orange wouldn't have worked well IMO. Maybe white? But green is good. Unless the stadium has navy, white, purple and red colours all together (bleh) it can't have red. It's like giving etihad stadium red, doesn't work for many clubs.

If the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium were to ever be expanded, the roof would be dismantled, the seats would be removed, the structure to support the expansion gets built, a brand-new roof similar to the original one would be installed, and the seats would be re-installed. We'll probably have to wait a few decades before we think about any expansions to the stadium.

Thanks, I saw this stadium in the flesh for the first time in a while when I went to the match on Thursday. A few thoughts:

- First of all, the concourse and "inside" parts seem finished. Ticket boxes, toilets, concrete paths, glass panels etc. seem done.
- The side facing the park (long side) is just about finished apart from say 30 panels, maximum.
- The only bubble seemingly untouched is the bubble to the left of the far right bubble on the Swan st side which makes up a good (I'd say 60?) percent of triangles to be put on (you'll know what I'm talking about in a pic of the stadium).
- All concerns about finishing time seem to me to have dissipated. For starters, the inside seems done and the outside seems just about. Putting up the screens, seats and remaining bubbles can easily be done in two weeks.
- The side closer to the train tracks looks completely finished. I couldn't see it in the flesh but walking around to that side from the park, every panel looks put in.
- I don't have any pictures sorry, my phone is useless for pictures.
- I like the concourse plans, simple and effective, having one slab with a number of stairs shooting off the stadium makes sense.
- Hisense and vodaphone arena (or whatever they're called) really need improvement now, the missus looks really good and the g always rocks while these look a little meh in comparison.

So I'd be looking for a mid April finish. It's cutting it fine in some ways as it only allows 20 days whereas South Africa for instance finished six months early. I know it's the world cup, but still, we're a first world nation but the way we handle infrastructure developments at times, you wouldn't know it. When the tigers play the dees I'll try and get some pictures for everyone.

I see the Southern side every day from the train and on Friday it looked like maybe one or two panels were left to be installed on that side.

Richo83
March 28th, 2010, 12:20 PM
Yeah, you're right, something in the single digits if that, it might be some clear triangles that look like unfilled gaps but it's something small if any. As for the eastern side, that, with the northern side is the only side pretty much which needs more than 50 triangles.

All up I'd say maybe 150-250 triangles left maybe? I counted about low 200s but that was a rough guess at best. Certainly looks on time though. I wonder when it's open to the public, will May 7 be it's public opening? I'd like to be able to wander around the concourse before that, if I'm allowed to.

In fairness Etihad is a venue that is multi-purpose. Can you think of one other stadium in the world that hosts as many events annually as Etihad stadium? I'm honestly at a loss to name one.

The reason this stadium will be great is simply because its rectangular. I actually liked the view from the third tier at Etihad, so I'm not fussed about seeing the games closer or anything. I'm just happy that on TV, you will now be able to see some semblence of a crowd! Football on TV where you can't see the crowd is a sad spectacle indeed.

Stadium set for kick-off

Just 28 days from its official opening the $267.5 million rectangular stadium that will soon be home to the Melbourne Storm and Melbourne Victory is taking shape.

The turf at AAMI Park is laid and ready for action.

More than half of the venue's 31,500 seats have been installed, as have all corporate dining areas, catering facilities and training areas.

Of 2540 panels that make up the stadium's unique roof, only 200 more need to be installed.

Ticketing and IT systems have been fitted and are being tested and video boards are operational.

The Brumby Government is confident the stadium will be finished before a rugby league Test between Australia and New Zealand on May 7.

But insiders say issues with drainage and leaking could see it open with some parts incomplete.

True, although its hard to argue with 210,000 tickets (at $150 a pop) being sold for the 3 AC/DC concerts.

Its got a great look and feel but the capacity is either or.

Its not exactly 20k but its not your 45k world cup capacity either.

There are of course obvious restrictions set down by authorities and budget constraints but this venue can't and will not expand given its intricate design/structure, so it will always be stuck at 31,000.

Of course Melbourne on the other hand is not short of venues with Etihad and the MCG easily dealing with larger events. Its just sort of a pity. sort of.

Richo83

@ Mo rush

Yes and no, football is not massively supported in Australia and a more smaller, intimate stadium which with this size will be filled every week is the aim, instead of building a monstrosity which is half-empty and hurts the stadium and the club, a la the roar and suncorp.

I understand what you're saying and it's a fair point, but given also this has to support rugby, another under supported sport in this state, and it can't be too big, especially as I predict Melbourne storm attendances will plummet in the next few years (sad but true). I mean the rebels are one of it's tenants, if they average even half the capacity of this stadium in attendances, that would be an achievement. 31k is not minute, but it's the right size and the right choice. I'm also glad we've just got a rectangular stadium in Victoria, it's a feat in itself. Quibbling over capacity seems to be expecting a bit too much.

If Australia is to host the world cup I'd suggest other stadiums would do the trick. There's no guarantee though that Australia will ever get the wc so I doubt we should be building stadiums based on a possible opportunity which may never come. Serve the day to day needs of football and rugby, ensure their financial survival, then go on from there. Because I know a few rugby and football clubs in Australia which couldn't cope with a say 40-50k stadium.

Final touches as 'bubble' stadium unwrapped
PAUL MILLAR
May 4, 2010

The ghosts of long-gone greyhounds are being swept away with the dust as construction workers put the final touches to Melbourne's latest sporting arena.

Old timers tell stories of poor performing dogs being found in the bins at the rear of the old Olympic Park stadium. The bins were filled with dust and plastic sheets as workers swarmed over the rectangular stadium in the countdown to its opening on Friday night.

Contractors dusted off the 30,000-plus seats of the $267.5 million riverside AAMI Park yesterday as others ground grinding hard edges off concrete corners.

On the spectacular "bubble" roof, harnessed tradesmen searched for gaps.

The Kangaroos, Australia's national rugby league side, will be the first team to stud the bowling green-like surface on Friday night in a sell-out game against New Zealand.

The stadium, which has no pillars to block views, will be the home to Melbourne Storm and soccer clubs Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Heart.

The Melbourne Rebels Super 15 rugby union side will also be a tenant, taking the code back to where the game was played at the turn of the century.

The site has had successes and failures. A history of the area reveals that racing ostriches were brought in from South Australia in December 1926. Reports at the time said they were confused or terrified, wandering aimlessly with cardboard jockeys on their backs.

As for greyhound racing, the "dishlickers" are just a memory, the ostriches probably became feather dusters and would have been handy yesterday as workers put some spit and polish on Victoria's newest sporting centre.

There's also a video up on the website.

I know it should be no surprise but it's a good feeling regardless, on the webcam, all the workers and machinery have gone, bar two. Most if not all the workers seem to have left, I wonder if you can walk in yet.

This picture was taken 24 April 2010, before the seating on the northern and eastern stands was fully installed. In this photo, the ground is set up for Rugby League.

If that is a real picture, then stone me. I'm not arguing its not a real picture, but I must be the only one who thinks that looks rendered. Everything about it doesn't seem real, but I'm not doubting it is.

Someone's been playing with a HDR program on the photo, and the settings are turned up very high which makes it look a bit unrealistic.

It's similar to a tedious darkroom process used by photographers to get those ominous looking clouds, but there was a reason why that process was so tedious and HDR doesn't really achieve the same. :)

Anyway, the stadium has turned out great. :D

So Im not crazy then, thanks for that. It has turned out great indeed. The only thing I'm slightly concerned about still is the distance the pitch is from the stands for football matches. Atmosphere will be better, fans will be much closer than ES, and its a real rectangular stadium; yet it was even a tad far for the rugby league match last night. Will have to wait and see I guess

Watched the first 20 minutes of the broadcast last night to give this stadium a look, and it appeared in the background that the roof was leaking. I then read the paper today and it mentions it. Can anyone shed some light? It looked like a fair bit of rain was coming through :ohno:

Otherwise, looks fantastico!

They're were reports (over at Austadiums) that the roof was leaking in parts, apparently because it wasn't actually finished and some because of poor design/construction.

There were also complaints the walkways were partly flooding and the concourse was far to small when the lines from food/toilets built up.

An amazing looking stadium that unfortunately seems to have failed its first major test. It looks great, it's in a great position, it potentially could be one of the best venues in Australia, however it appears as though it's fallen way off that mark.

That said I haven't been there myself since it's opened, I do plan on having a look down there in July and maybe get to a game if something is on that weekend.

If anyone here went to the game on Friday night maybe they can shed some more light on the stadium.

Citylink leaked initially also. Its a brand new stadium, that was only just finished in time for the rugby on Friday night - give them time to iron out the bugs.

Fair point, then again, citylink is not a great point of infrastructure comparison considering it's been plagued with problems.

Why was so much room left at the end of the grounds? What are the comparitive sizes of a rugly League, union and socccer field?

Seems like too much room was left anyway, which does mean that the ends are definately further thanI would have liked.

Agreed, way too much room. Most recent Australian rectangle stadiums like Suncorp, Skilled Park and the Mrs' have been designed by Populous. I'm not sure where they are getting their dimensional requirements but all at 136m in length, its overkill.
Rugby Union does generally have the largest dimensions out of the tenants but Rugby union dimensions are not fixed, the field can be as little as 65m wide and a 10m ingoal area (endzone for the North Americans) is allowed in full internationals. Rugby League tends to use 8m ingoal areas in Australia. Going by these lengths and the fact that the IRB (International Rugby Board) requires 6m dead zoned between the side dead ball line and the fence, no Stadium field should be more then 132m in length.
The IRB have allowed the use of Old Trafford for the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England which is only 118m in length so they are clearly more flexible these days. I imagine the Old Trafford Rugby Union dimensions would be 98m field with 5m ingoal areas and 5m dead areas. Old Trafford host Rugby League regularly.

At least we have moved on from the Traditional 20m ingoal areas of Rugby Union which left a stupidly long distance to the action such as at the Sydney Football Stadium, Parc des Princes, Murrayfield which are still or at least were over 150m in length.

Looks ok, but still think it could be better. Most LED technology on stadiums replies more on throwing light onto glazing to project light, for the best effects. This is the case on the hotel on the Abu Dhabi F1 track and the Beijing Water Cube for instance.

Overall it was a good added detail but could have been better.

Are they going to be on every night or just match days?

The 2 Melbourne football clubs are getting ready to use this fantastic new stadium.
New club Melbourne Heart will open the season tomorrow night and Melbourne Victory will be there next week-I cant wait.
Have central seats at the Southern end above the active support

MH ended up getting over 11,000 people at the game last Thursday. Great result for the new club. I'm Big fan of them, so very happy to see the amount that did turn up, to a weeknight game, on a cooler winter's night (was clear with no rain though).

For those with foxtel in Australia, Nat Geo has a documentary, part of the Build It Bigger series, tonight at 7:30pm AEST, which is about the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium project. Should be good.

hehe.. no.. I was Melbourne football fan, just not really that connected with MV. I am much more connected with MH. Personal choice:)

Yeah I think when it went fro 20 to 30k, something that did not chage were the access points, toilets and other ammenities. They stayed smaller, as per the original proposal. In that regard, everything was just rushed, with limited thought as to how the extra 10K would be handled.

A pity though, for what is a true icon:)

Yes Irish it is great, long overdue.
Was disappointed the LED wasn't happening.I also thought that the skin would light up similar to Allianz as far as team colours

As for toilets ,its just incredible that they weren't enlarged with expansion
Guess I was spoilt in SA at the World Cup-the new stadia had huge toilet areas etc

The LED lights are happening, as they already operate. They are just not that effective.

I love Alliance Arena's 'skin'. Its very cool, with all those lighting effects too. Its a pity its not like that, but so be it:)

Why does the roof in the renders look relatively clear, yet the finished product is not that at all?

Well I would say that the roof looks progressivley more clear in each of the renders you posted. In the bottom render it looks completely clear, in the top render it doesnt look clear at all. What does this tell you? Never turst an artists render.

According to Build it Biggest, the roof has only relatively few glass panels to prtotect the interior from heat. Some glass panels were left to act as windows, but the rest of the panels are white to provide shade.

Just to clarify. You do realise the 3rd image posted is not a render but is a photo taken during construction?

A photo taken from the Yarra River.
