RS unit hopes to score with football field business

Bangkokpost 21/05/2008

In football-crazy Thailand, there can never be enough places to play, which has prompted a subsidiary of the entertainment company RS Plc to expand into football pitch development. RS Fresh Air, an event organiser, aims to develop three artificial-turf fields this year, according to managing director Vinij Lertratanachai, a former disc-jockey and football lover. Only 15 artificial-turf fields exist in the country at present.

Mr Vinij says the timing is perfect since another RS subsidiary holds the broadcasting licence for next month's Euro 2008 tournament and the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. The events will help attract sports marketing budgets from many companies including Panasonic, Yamaha, Nescafe{aac} and M-150.

''RS sees it as an ideal project as it will help the company continue to be a sports content provider,'' Mr Vinij said.

RS Fresh Air has spent 100 million baht on its first indoor artificial-turf pitch, S-One, located on an eight-rai plot at Soi 48, Bang Na-Trat road. The turf alone, imported from Italy, cost 20 million baht.

The 10,000-square-metre site, which RS says is the largest premium turf spread in the country, has four fields of 35 by 50 metres each. Most turf fields in Thailand are smaller and can only accommodate five-a-side football matches but the S-One fields have room for seven players a side. The site is expected to draw one million people this year.

The fields will rent for 1,500 baht per hour. Rental revenue is expected to be between 300,000 and 400,000 baht per month and the company aims to obtain revenue from other sources as well.

''We don't expect to rely on the service fee since it wouldn't be enough,'' said Mr Vinij. ''Most of our revenues would come from sponsorship from our main and co-sponsors.''

RS Fresh Air expects to earn 70 million baht from the project this year, 40% of which would be from its five main sponsors, 30% from field rentals and 30% from events.

The company plans two more fields in suburban Bangkok this year: on a 21-rai site in Rarm Intra and in Bang Khae. The Rarm Intra site will cost 300 million baht.

''There can never be enough football fields in this country,'' Mr Vinij said.

Bangkok to house a new ATF Tennis Centre

Published: 3/04/2009

An Asian Tennis Centre will be set up at Muang Thong Thani in Bangkok, Thai officials said yesterday.

Adm Bannawit Kengrien, secretary-general of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand (LTAT), said the move was approved by the Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) at a meeting of its executives in Uzbekistan last month.

The meeting was presided over by ATF chairman Anil Khanna and attended by LTAT president Suwat Liptapanlop who is an ATF deputy chairman.

Former LTAT vice president Chaipak Siriwat earlier said the Asian Tennis Centre would be established in Bangkok's Nong Chok district.

Chaipak said yesterday he did not a have a problem with the location and accepted the ATF's decision.

Nadal to headline September Thailand Open

By Deutsche Presse Agentur 5/05/2009

Bangkok - Spain's Rafael Nadal will complete a Top 3 hat-trick for the Thailand Open when he plays the autumn event for the first time, officials said on Thursday.

The world number one's showing will follow that of Roger Federer, the 2004 and 2005 champion, and Novak Djokovic, finalist last year against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Six-time Grand Slam winner Nadal will be joined in the field at the Impact arena by Frenchman Tsonga.

"I'm very pleased to finally be able to come and compete at the Thailand Open," said Nadal in a statement.

The presence of the world's top player can only help the event, which is in danger of faltering after the fading from the tennis scene of Thai Paradorn Srichaphan, the major crowd-puller in his Bangkok hometown.

The event runs September 26-October 4 and begins an ATP Asian run which concludes a fortnight later with the new Shanghai Masters.

Federer mayplay at PTT Thai Open

Bangkokpost 28/05/2009

Fans here could see a duel between the world's top two players, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, at the PTT Thailand Open. World number one Nadal has confirmed participation in the ATP event as has defending champion Jo Wilfried-Tsonga, and second-ranked Federer has shown interest in returning to Bangkok.

''Roger Federer has asked us about the date of the tournament,'' said Brian Marcar, chairman of the organising committee.

He said Federer would soon make a decision if he wants to take part in the tournament. The Swiss played here in 2004 and 2005 and won on both occasions.

The organisers have approached a number of players, many of whom are likely to give a reply after the French Open, Marcar said.

The US$608,500 event will be held at Impact Arena, Muang Thong Thani from Sept 26 to Oct 4.

Even the budget will increase but the goverment has approved 272,725,000 baht and is allocated to defferent parties 226,656,000 baht.

Liverpool eye 'sustainable loyalty' Reds promise to bring full squad for Asia tour

Bangkokpost Published: 20/05/2009 at 12:00 AM

Liverpool hope they "will never walk alone" when they visit Bangkok and Singapore in July.

The English Premiership side meet the Thai national team at Rajamangala National Stadium on July 22 at 8pm and play in Singapore on July 26, the club and organisers confirmed yesterday.

They promised to bring their full squad for the Southeast Asia trip. It will be the Reds' first visit to Thailand since 2003.

The pre-season tour is part of their ambition to build "sustainable loyalty" in Asia, said Liverpool commercial director Ian Ayle.

"Asia probably has more Liverpool fans than anywhere in the world so we decided to come here," Ayle told the Post.

"There is great support and great interest here in Thailand and in Singapore."

He said Liverpool had received offers from 15 or 16 countries but chose Thailand and Singapore because the club wanted to create brand awareness and sustainable loyalty among fans in the region.

"I was born about half a mile from Anfield. I, like other Liverpool supporters, think about the club everyday," he added.

"Fans here may have great support for the club but they do not think about the club everyday. So we want to come here for them to feel loyal."

He insists the visit is not about money but the main objective is for fans to have a chance to watch the 18-time English champions and make them part of the team.

"Money is important but not the most important factor," Ayle said. "Fans are more important. To become successful, we need good players, good manager and fans. We want fans here to be part of the team."

Earlier at a press conference, Ayle said every time he and the club came here they had received a friendly welcome.

"Our players are looking forward to coming to Thailand and I hope that the Thai fans will enjoy the match," he said.

Former Liverpool star Steve McMahon, who is an organiser of the tour, said it would be a competitive match.

"We will bring our full squad and hopefully it will be an interesting game," he said.

"I used to beat (Thailand coach) Peter (Reid) when I played for Liverpool and he played for Everton and we will beat his team again."

Reid said he was looking forward to the game and hoped both sides would create an enjoyable match.

Worawi Makudi, president of the Football Association of Thailand (FAT), said it was a great honour for the Thai national team to play the five-time European champions.

Liverpool have a big fan base here and he said they will see an entertaining match between their beloved club and their national side.

"I am sure Liverpool will never walk alone when they come here," he said.

Liverpool will arrive in Bangkok on July 20 and leave for Singapore on July 23.

Tickets priced 600-3,000 baht will be available at Adidas stores in Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya from Friday.

Ticket prices raise concern for Reds match

Bangkokpost Published Published: 27/05/2009 at 12:00 AM

As all roads lead to Rome today when Manchester United meet Barcelona in the Champions League final, Liverpool will soon be heading to Southeast Asia.

Liverpool will visit Thailand for the first time in six years in July as part of their preparations for the new season.

The five-time European champions will take on the Thai national team on July 22 at Rajamangala National Stadium at 8pm.

Four days later they will play in Singapore in their only other match in Asia during the closed season.

Liverpool initially planned to play in Hong Kong but the match was scrapped because of financial problems.

It was reported that concerned parties there complained about Liverpool's fees which they could not afford.

The Reds, who last came to Thailand in 2003, will reportedly receive US$1 million for playing in Bangkok.

In fact, it is fortunate for Liverpool fans here to get the chance to see their beloved club when their country is hit hard by economic woes.

It took quite a long time for concerned parties to agree terms to bring the Reds to Thailand.

The July trip is being organised by a foreign company _ the Profitable Group.

The organisers probably did not know much about Thai ways so they were too strict during a press conference to confirm the tour last week.

Only a certain number of journalists from a media outlet were allowed to attend the press conference although the room was big enough to accommodate more people.

This caused chaotic scenes as journalists without a badge were not allowed to enter the conference room.

"Liverpool are only runners-up in the Premier League. It could have been worse had they been the champions," observed a journalist.

Liverpool commercial director Ian Ayre said the trip was not mainly about money but aimed at building "sustainable loyalty" among fans in Asia.

However, I feel that the ticket prices from 600 to 3,000 baht are too expensive by Thai standards. This is probably a result of the Reds' fee.

Faithful Liverpool fans have to pay 1,350 baht (with a complimentary scarf) for a ticket for the so-called "The Kop stand".

I think the cheapest ticket should be lower than 600 baht and the most expensive one should be in the region of 1,500 baht.

Manchester United are much more successful than Liverpool this season and tickets for their game in Malaysia cost only about 600 to 1,000 baht.

It is reported that tickets for the Liverpool match here are selling like hot cakes. Hopefully, the game enjoys a full house.

Another problem is the tickets are on sale at 19 selected Adidas shops in Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket instead of all their outlets.

This causes confusion and inconvenience for fans who may not know exactly which outlet sells the tickets.

The media were asked by the organisers to publish the Adidas shops that sell the tickets but this was not possible as the list is too long.

As for fans who have deep pockets, they can buy a 3,000 baht ticket (with a complimentary "Goody Bag") only at the Profitable Group (phone number 02-653-2201-2).

The organisers should have hired a ticket selling company to do the job as this would be more convenient for all concerned parties and fans could buy tickets at their outlets, by phone or online.

As Liverpool are still looking forward to winning their first English league crown for two decades, their prospects next season may not be so bright.

There might be a jinx in Thailand as most European clubs suffer an unconvincing season after their visit to this country.

Liverpool keen to impress in friendly Fan favourite Gerrard thousands of miles away

Bangkokpost Published: 21/07/2009 at 12:00 AM

Liverpool arrived in Bangkok yesterday for an "important" friendly against the Thai national team tomorrow.

Apart from club captain Steven Gerrard, all their stars are in the squad for the Asia tour including Fernando Torres, new signing Glen Johnson and Xabi Alonso whose future at Anfield is unclear.

The Reds were greeted by hundreds of fans and journalists at the Grand Hyatt Erawan amid tight security.

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez told a press conference that he was looking forward to the game against Thailand and the match in Singapore at the weekend after losing to Rapid Vienna 1-0 on Sunday and drawing 0-0 with Swiss club St Gallen last week.

"For us, this is a really important stage of the season," said the Spanish coach.

"Everything we do during pre-season is about planning for the first game. We will continue to prepare the players well this week and look to play well in the games.

"It was disappointing to lose in Vienna because you always want to win games, but there were lots of positives to take from the game. Hopefully we can keep working well, and keep working hard, over here."

Gerrard featured in both games in Europe before jetting back to England.

Gerrard was due to appear in a Liverpool court yesterday at the start of his trial on charges stemming from an incident at a club in Southport, Merseyside last December.

He denies a charge of affray.

Defender Jamie Carragher said Gerrard was very disappointed for not being able to make the Asia trip.

At yesterday's press conference, most questions from both Thai and foreign journalists were about Alonso, who is being chased by Real Madrid.

With one question followed by another and then another, it soon became clear that Benitez did not want to discuss the player's future.

"He is here with us and he will be available for the games," Benitez said.

Asked if he had talked to Alonso about the transfer speculation, Benitez joked: "He is here with us. He can enjoy the games, the weather and the journalists."

Star striker Torres, midfielder Alonso and Liverpool's other Spanish stars only joined the squad on Sunday after being given extra time off because of their country's appearance in the Confederations Cup in South Africa.

"The Spanish players have not trained and they cannot play too long," said Benitez. "They will play a little bit at the end."

Carragher said that the pre-season games were important as Liverpool look to snare their first Premier League title since its creation in 1993.

"Hopefully in these pre-season games we can improve and get better and go one step better than we did last year when we were runners-up," he said.

He insisted he already had his sights set firmly on the league title next season.

"There's going to be a lot of competition this year but if we can improve one or two percent on what we did last season then we have a good chance," he said.

Liverpool will take on the Thai national team at Rajamangala stadium tomorrow at 8pm and play in Singapore on Sunday in their other game in the Far East trip.

Xavi Alonso, Dirk Kuyt and Albert Riera are set to take part in a promotional event in front of CentralWorld today at 1pm.

There will also be a football clinic at Chulalongkorn stadium for 100 junior players at the same time.

A night to remember for Thai Liverpool fans

BangkokPost.com 23/07/2009 at 12:00 AM

For once last night, a gathering of people who wore red shirts was not intimidating and had nothing to do with politics.

The ''red shirts'' were Liverpool fans who packed the 50,000-seat Rajamangala stadium to watch the English Premier League side play the Thai national team in a friendly.

A large number of fans arrived at the stadium early in the afternoon although the match was scheduled to kick off at 8pm as they were afraid of the notorious traffic in Hua Mark.

The early birds proved they were right as traffic almost ground to a halt in the evening. It became worse possibly because Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva was presiding over the game.

''Traffic was three times worse than normal,'' said a motorcycle taxi driver.

But he and other motorcycle taxi drivers were happy with the situation as they made quick money because fans had to use their service to arrive at the stadium in time for the kick-off.

Vendors outside the stadium also had a reason to love Liverpool _ at least for one day _ as their business was brisk.

''I'd like Liverpool to play here every day,'' said a vendor who sold water and sugarcane juice.

Many fans wore Reds shirts with the name and number of popular stars on the back such as FernandoTorres, Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano.

At least two fans preferred to turn back the clock by wearing shirts with number 17 but the name was not Gerrard who used to have that number _ it was Bellamy!

Liverpool's popularity, the presence of the prime minister and the type A (H1N1) flu helped create one of the most chaotic scenes ever seen in a football match in Thailand.

Hundreds of policemen, plainclothes, soldiers and sniffer dogs were mobilised to ensure security, along with guards hired by Profitable Group which organised the match.

Ticket holders had to go past a thermo scan machine to check if they were flu suspects. Unfortunately, there were only a few machines and people had to form long queues to complete the process.

It was a pity that fans were not informed about this beforehand as piles of hamburgers and plastic bottles of water were left at the entrance to the stadium.

Inside the stadium, Liverpool were greeted by their theme song You'll Never Walk Alone which was followed by a series of songs from the Beatles.

The Beatles songs began with Yesterday and one may wonder why the DJ picked this song.

He or she probably wanted to say something to Alonso, who could soon join Real Madrid, as part of the song goes ''Why she had to go I don't know, she wouldn't say.''

The match actually kicked off at 8.25pm as Prime Minister Abhisit, a Newcastle fan, arrived a bit late.

Stand-in Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher received an I-love-Thailand elephant doll as souvenir from the prime minister.

It was a player who was not afraid of the flu _ Ryan Babel _ who opened the scoring for Liverpool.

At a press conference on Monday, the Dutch forward said he was not afraid of the flu because the disease was everywhere including Europe.

Thailand coach Peter Reid's wish that his men would score at least a goal against Liverpool was fulfilled when substitute Sutee Suksomkit hit the equaliser for Thailand.

Whether the match was entertaining or not seemed irrelevant for Liverpool fans as most of them left the stadium with a smile.

But their beloved team still have to seek their morale-boosting first win in pre-season.

Liverpool held to 1-1 draw by Thailand

Writer: AFP Published: 23/07/2009 at 02:59 AM

A great second-half strike by Sutee Suksomkit earned Thailand a well-deserved 1-1 draw with Premier League giants Liverpool in a pre-season game here on Wednesday.

There was little goalmouth action to excite the capacity 76,000 crowd with Liverpool looking decidedly ring-rusty.

The Premier League runners-up have still to win in their pre-season travels following a 0-0 draw with St Gallen of Switzerland and a 1-0 loss to Rapid Vienna.

"We had some chances, we were playing against a team that was well organised and they play quick," said Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez.

"So you come to a new continent and conditions are different, always more difficult, but I was pleased with the performance of some players and also pleased to see the national team (of Thailand) play well."

Benitez was left to rue a hamstring injury picked up by defender Martin Skrtel early in the second half but said he was not sure how long the Slovak would be out of action.

"Really disappointed because Martin has a had a problem with his hamstring and a little bit with the ligaments on the knee, so we have to wait," he said.

Thailand coach Peter Reid, who starred for Liverpool?s local rivals Everton in his heyday, was overjoyed with the result.

"We passed the ball really well and it was great to get a good equaliser," he said. "Liverpool are a strong team and it was a great experience for the Thailand team to play against them."

As expected, Liverpool?s Spanish contingent did not feature in the starting line-up with Real Madrid target Xabi Alonso not even on the bench, heightening speculation that he will soon be on the move.

Dutch duo Dirk Kuyt and Babel, stand-in captain Jamie Carragher, Daniel Agger and Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva were the most recognisable names in the team.

The highly rated Krisztian Nemeth and David Ngog formed the strike partnership with Fernando Torres named as one of the substitutes.

Thailand could have sprung a surprise after just two minutes, playmaker Datsakorn Thonglao sidefooting a weak clearance from keeper Diego Cavalieri just wide.

Liverpool opened the scoring in the simplest fashion four minutes later. A long ball from Carragher at first eluded Babel but he steadied and shot low into the net.

Babel should have grabbed his own and Liverpool?s second in the 20th minute, shooting tamely past the post after an exquisite through-ball from Lucas.

The last real action of a lacklustre first half saw Datsakorn fire a free-kick just over the top.

Benitez changed virtually the whole team for the second half with goalscorer Babel the sole survivor. But there was still no start for Torres despite calls from the full-house Rajamanagala Stadium.

Midfielder Javier Mascherano had a rasping drive from distance saved in the 62nd minute as Liverpool pushed forward for a second goal.

Thailand drew level in the 72nd minute after a well-worked move, substitute Sutee playing a one-two with Teerasil Dangda before finishing off with a left foot strike.

The spectators finally got their wish in the 80th minute when Torres and fellow Spaniard Albert Riera came on as substitutes.

Andriy Voronin, back with Liverpool after a loan spell with Hertha Berlin, should have sealed the issue for the Premier League side but shot wide from a good position.

CPF wants to sponsor Premier League team within three years

The Nation Published on August 31, 2009

Chiang Mai - Aiming to achieve global-brand status, Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF) will adopt a sports-marketing strategy that includes plans to become a sponsor of an English Premier League football team within three years.

Asian representatives of Premier League club Liverpool have been in talks with a number of major Thai corporations including CPF, Singha and Central Group. The representatives presented a business proposal and outlined a range of potential benefits for the targeted partners.

Becoming a main sponsor of a Premier League team would give the CP brand global exposure, and the firm direct access to the football fans it has targeted.

Suphat Sritanatorn, CPF's senior vice president for marketing, said the firm is considering not only English teams but also clubs in Spain's La Liga and Italy's Calcio Serie-A. In England, CPF is interested in Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City and Everton.

The company must first consider many details, especially which team, league and division would create the maximum benefit for the company's CP brand, Suphat said.

Currently, the only Thai-owned brand to sponsor an English team is Chang beer, owned by the Sirivadhanabhakdi family, which has a deal with Everton. Chang last year extended the sponsorship deal for three years at a cost of ฃ8 million (Bt442.5 million).

"The company is in talks with interested football teams in the UK. We expect that the CP brand will become the main sponsor of a Premier League team within the next three years," said Suphat.

CPF is already a major sponsor of international boxing bouts and the Thai League football competition.

Suphat said CPF spends an average of Bt400 million to Bt450 million per year on marketing. Of the total, Bt180 million to Bt200 million is allocated to the domestic market and the remainder is for the export market.

The global economic crisis prompted the company to increase its marketing budget by 10 per cent to ensure sales targets are met. Total sales are set to reach Bt150 billion this year.

"During these tougher economic times, the company has had to increase its marketing budget to focus on brand-building. If we don't, our competitors will boost their market shares," Suphat said.

As part of the marketing plan, the company is expanding its CP Fresh Mart shops network. The company manages about 500 shops nationwide and plans to add 100 to 120 outlets next year. It aims to have 700 shops by 2011.

Due to the economic slowdown, CPF missed its first-half sales projection. However, it is hoped that the expected economic recovery will boost sales volume by 10 per cent and sales value by 8 to 10 per cent by the end of this year.

Suphat said CPF has had to reduce the retail price of CP brand products in the domestic market by 5 to 10 per cent due to fierce competition.

England mull game in Thailand

From: afp.com Jul-23-09

Fabio Capello may bring England to Thailand to play a game in the build-up to next year's World Cup in South Africa, officials said Thursday.

Andy Anson, the chief executive of England's bid team for the 2018 World Cup, said Thailand, coached by former Everton and England midfielder Peter Reid, had extended an invitation and it was being considered.

"We are actively trying to find a date for England to play here in Thailand," he told AFP on a visit to Asia to drum up support for England's bid.

"Ultimately that is Fabio Capello's decision -- he is the one who decides what type of teams England need to play against. But I think it would be fantastic to see England out here.

"There is a passion for England and the national team, it could work very well.

"We have to ultimately wait for England to qualify, then the draw and finally Fabio Capello and that is the way it should be."

England are 10 points clear of Croatia at the top of Group Six in European qualifying and are just one result away from booking their place in South Africa.

The draw for the finals is made in Cape Town in December.

Blatter opens memorial centre in Phuket

Bangkokpost Published: 16/09/2009 at 12:00 AM

Fifa president Sepp Blatter kicks a ball yesterday with a youth during the opening of the Tsunami Memorial Football Centre in Phuket. EPA
"I often speak about how football can be used as a tool for social change, or express solidarity and hope," the Fifa boss said yesterday.

"I first visited this site three years ago and I am very, very proud to see what is now available for these children.

"With a facility like this, we can help make the lives of these children a bit better and give them hope after what they've experienced, through the game of football."

The president of the global football governing body was welcomed by Football Association of Thailand (FAT) president Worawi Makudi, Phuket officials and more than 100 students from Ban Ao Nam Bo School where the centre is located.

"When I walked past the children, I saw hope in their eyes," Mr Blatter said.

Fifa donated 700,000 euros (35 million baht) for two football pitches and two buildings. The centre also has a clubhouse, an accommodation block, a multi-purpose hall and training facilities.

Construction of the Phuket centre began in 2006, two years after six southern provinces were hit by tidal waves in one of Thailand's worst natural disasters.

The undersea earthquake on Dec 26, 2004, off Sumatra killed nearly 230,000 people in 11 countries. Nearly 5,400 people were confirmed dead in Thailand.

The Fifa chief said while nature had its destructive power it also had constructive power to help rebuild affected areas.

Mr Worawi, who is also a Fifa executive member, said the centre would be for children from tsunami-hit provinces to play football and perform other activities, and act as a training centre for the national team.

In the evening, Mr Blatter met Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to discuss a new grassroots football initiative. He will launch another project at the National Training Centre in Bangkok today.

Thailand wins Asian championship for first time

Thai players pose with the trophy after winning the Asian crown for the first time

Hanoi, Vietnam, September 13, 2009 — Devastating Thailand brought the curtain down on the 15th Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship with a bang by overpowering 11-time champions and FIVB World No. 3 China in a dramatic four sets on Sunday.

World No. 17 Thailand dazzled China and a large crowd of boisterous supporters in the Quan Ngua Competition Hall with a gutsy display and a strong will to win.

The magnificent come-from-behind 20-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-23 victory over the well-established Chinese team, which last month claimed fifth place at the World Grand Prix in Tokyo, ended Thailand’s gold-medal drought at the biennial competition.

Thailand had never beaten China before. This year, Thailand lost to their formidable rivals twice: a straight-sets loss in the World Championship third round in Chengdu, China in July and again at the last month’s World Grand Prix preliminaries in Macau.

Thailand made their debut in this tournament in its 4th edition in Shanghai in 1987. There, they finished fifth. Since then, their performances were a series of ups and downs. Their best efforts came in 2001 and 2007 on home soil when they finished third.

The scintillating win over the bronze medalists at last year’s Beijing Olympic Games has earned Thailand another berth to play in a world-class competition as they are now guaranteed a ticket in next year’s World Grand Prix.

Thailand will also represent Asia as the continental champions and test their mettle at the World Grand Champions Cup this November in Japan.

“It’s beyond everyone’s expectation. I never thought before that we could come this far. To win a semifinal berth in the Asian Championship was already a dream come true for us. Now we have another sweet dream – to win the Asian crown for the first time ever,” said Thai head coach Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai.

In the third-place playoff, defending and three-time champions Japan powered past Korea for the fourth time in a row in just 35 days. World No. 7 Japan beat Korea twice in the World Grand Prix preliminaries and twice at this tournament, including Sunday’s 25-16, 25-15, 25-18 cakewalk.

Match results

Bronze medal match: Japan beat Korea 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-18)

Gold medal match: Thailand beat China 2-1 (20-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-19, 25-23)

Robson has begun putting Thailand in the spotlight

Bangkokpost Published: 27/09/2009 at 12:00 AM

Wanchai Rujawongsanti looks at what could be waiting for Robbo and even wonders whether a Poseidon adventure could be on the cards

Former England captain Bryan Robson will begin his reign as coach of Thailand's national team next month.

He will succeed former England colleague Peter Reid who left Thailand earlier this month after one year in charge to be assistant manager at Premier League side Stoke City.

Many Middle East sides and Italian and Spanish clubs are ridiculed for their short fuses as they are often quick to change coaches after just a few poor results.

In a sense, Thailand are also in the same league as Robson will be the Kingdom's sixth coach since 2003.

Many critics say "yuck" when they learned that Robson and the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) had struck a deal.

They believe Robson, 52, is not the right man for the Thai national team because he has not achieved much in his coaching career.

He has managed Middlesbrough, Bradford City, West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United. He quit the Blades in February last year and is now a global ambassador for Manchester United.

If not Robson, which coach do the critics want?

Frankly, I don't think that even the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger or Jose Mourinho would be able to turn Thailand into a formidable force in a short period.

While Robson's management skills may be questionable, he is famous as a former England and Manchester United skipper.

This could help promote the Thai Premier League and ignite passion for the national team.

Because of Robson, more people around the world know something about the Thai national side.

When he agreed to coach Thailand on Wednesday, the news was published on popular websites including BBC and ESPN.

This would not have happened had the new coach of Thailand been a Kiatisak or a Surachai.

Robson may not know much about Asian football but he will be assisted by compatriot Steve Darby who has vast knowledge about the game in the region.

One good thing about Robson is he knows a thing or two about Thai politics.

He was scheduled to come to Bangkok to promote Manchester United Bar and Restaurant late last year but the trip was cancelled because Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports were seized by the yellow shirts.

He did arrive here in April and returned home just before the red shirts staged fierce rallies in Bangkok and other provinces.

During his visit, he was asked which colour - red or yellow - he preferred.

He said jokingly that he could not pick one or the other as he could be in trouble.

Some critics fear that Robson's reported drinking habits could be a problem.

In fact, this could help him get along well with the Thai players many of whom reportedly like drinking. Try Sangsom, Mekhong, Singha or Chang, Robbo.

Meanwhile, FAT president Worawi Makudi has appointed former Chai Nat MP Anucha Nakasai as the national team manager.

This could be a huge boost for the national team. Anucha is known for his generosity and is husband of Commerce Minister Pornthiva whose father's business includes the popular Poseidon massage parlour.

The venue is just a few steps from the Radisson hotel, the national team's base when they are in a training camp.

The players may be able to relax at the massage parlour at a discount or for free!

Poonsawat ends wait with victory

ESPN Sport 27/09/2009

DUBLIN -- Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym of Thailand has stopped Bernard Dunne of Ireland in the third round to win the WBA super-bantamweight title.

The Thai landed a trio of powerful left hooks in the third round on Saturday in Dublin, each time sending Dunne to the mat. The referee stopped the fight after the third knockdown as blood flowed from the Dubliner's nose and left ear.

The 28-year-old Poonsawat (39-1) had waited 18 months for his shot at the title. It was his first professional victory outside Thailand. Before the fight he predicted he would knock out the hometown favorite within seven rounds.

The 29-year-old Dunne (28-2) captured the WBA title on March 21 with an 11th-round knockout of Panama's Ricardo Cordoba, also at the O2 Arena in Dublin's Docklands.

Korn proposes that Asean jointly bid for 2018 FIFA World Cup

The Nation 23/10/2009

Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij Friday proposed that Asean nations jointly bid to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

He said the idea was floated by businessmen from 3 or 4 Asean countries with hope that the event would revive economies in the Asean nations.

Korn said he proposed the idea to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva who supported it.

But the prime minister said the Asean countries would have first to reach an agreement on certain issues, such as which Asean team would represent the grouping in the competition.

Stars all set for Hua Hin match Venus and Sharapova ready for exhibition

Bangkokpost Published: 2/01/2010 at 12:00 AM

Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams said they are looking forward to today's exhibition match in Hua Hin after touching down at Suvarnabhumi airport yesterday.

The 20 million baht event marks Hua Hin's 100th anniversary and will be played at the Centennial Park.

Action starts at 2pm and will be televised live on Channel 3.

Venus, who was beaten by Sharapova in a match in Chiang Mai in 2005, said she was excited to be back again.

"I'm happy to be here and I hope people will enjoy watching the match," said the American.

Sharapova said she hopes to put on a good display for fans.

"I will play my best tennis to entertain the Thai people and I am looking forward to it," said the Russian.

"I would also like Thai people to have good luck and a happy life throughout 2010."

The pair were welcomed at the airport by LTAT secretary general Adm Bannawit Kengriang.

Maria and Venus are staying at the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort ahead of the exhibition, which will be a best-of-three-set match (super tie-break for the third set).

There will also be a one-set mixed doubles match featuring Maria and Danai Udomchoke against Venus and Paradorn Srichaphan.

Maria Sharapova beat Venus Williams in an entertaining exhibition in Hua Hin yesterday

Published: 3/01/2010 at 12:00 AM

Maria Sharapova got off to a bright start to the new season when she beat Venus Williams 6-3, 6-4 yesterday in an exhibition match between two former top-ranked players.

In a warm-up ahead of this month's Australian Open, both players appeared to be troubled by the baking heat as the temperature in the seaside resort reached 39 degrees Celsius.

The encounter was part of the celebrations to mark Hua Hin's 100th anniversary and was presided over by Suwat Liptapanlop, president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand.

Before a packed crowd, world No 14 Sharapova displayed a solid and fierce baseline game to put Williams away in just one hour and 34 minutes, and record her first win over the American since 2007.

Sharapova took a 4-1 lead before the 2008 Wimbledon champion broke the Russian to cut the deficit to 5-3. However, Sharapova was too strong and won the first set 6-3.

In the second set, both players held their serves until the final game when world No 6 Williams missed two forehands to lose the match.

''It's good to be back and I was glad to play against Venus in my first match of the year,'' said the 22-year-old Russian who also defeated Williams in an exhibition match in Chiang Mai at the start of 2005.

''I still remember when I first came to Thailand before. I was still young and had a great match with Venus.

''I will start practice now and use this beautiful hot weather to prepare for the Australian Open. I grew up in Florida. It's warm and humid there so here it's okay for me.''

When asked about Thailand, Sharapova said: ''I love the people. They greet you from your first step off the plane and you feel warm.

''They make you feel like you are a part of them and a part of the culture. I love the food like khao (rice) and different spices.''

Sharapova, who suffered a shoulder injury last year, said she hopes to stay healthy for the whole season.

Williams, who will be chasing her first Australian Open title when she heads to Melbourne, acknowledged she was a little bit behind the pace after the off-season.

''Maria played so well and I was slow in my first match of the season but it was good to be here hitting the ball,'' Williams said.

''Although I lost, my overall performance was pretty good. When I play with Maria, I have to play 100% to beat her.''

She said she likes local arts and knows a few Thai words, most of them for shopping.

''I know a few words to bargain like lod noi (reduce the price a bit) and paeng pai (too expensive),'' said the American.

''I'm always ready for the bargain. It is part of competition on and off the court.''

After their match, Williams teamed up with Danai Udomchoke to play Sharapova and Paradorn Srichaphan in a mixed doubles match.

Williams and Paradorn beat Danai and Sharapova 8-6 after an entertaining spectacle.

''I enjoyed playing with Paradorn,'' said Williams. ''He's a great player and has done so many great things for Thai tennis.'' said Williams.

About Paradorn's hair style, Williams said: ''It's cool!''

On Paradorn's hair, Sharapova said: ''It looks like a Mohawk, nothing new in my country.''

Rivals ready for Royal battle

Bangkokpost Published: 7/01/2010 at 12:00 AM

Both Asia captain Naomichi "Joe" Ozaki and Europe leader Colin Montgomerie are confident that their team will win the fourth Royal Trophy which tees off tomorrow.

They said at yesterday's press conference that results on the first two days would determine the winners at Amata Spring Country Club in Chon Buri.

Ozaki, who led Asia to their first victory over Europe last year, said he believed his team was strong enough to retain the prestigious trophy graciously donated by His Majesty the King.

"My players have a lot of experience and know how to play," said the 53-year-old Japanese. "The players are more confident following last year's win after two defeats."

The rough is much longer than last year, but Ozaki believes that his team have a good combination and balance to handle it.

Thailand's Prayad Marksaeng, who won all his three matches last year, said Europe were a strong team and would provide a strong challenge.

But the Asian squad are also strong with the likes of Japanese sensation Ryo Ishikawa and Asian Tour Order of Merit winner Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand, Prayad said.

"I think we have some players who the European team are afraid of," said the Thai, who has won three times on the Japan Golf Tour.

Ishikawa, who made his Royal Trophy debut last year, said it was a great honour to return to the event and vowed to give his all for the team.

"I hope we win again," said the 18-year-old who topped the Japan Tour money list last season with four titles.

As for his personal goal this year, the "Shy Prince" said he wanted to make the cut at the US Masters in April.

Montgomerie, who is also Europe skipper for the 2010 Ryder Cup, said his team boasted several players who are good enough to help Europe reclaim the trophy.

"My team is full of winners - their captain is the only one without a win in the last 12 months," the 46-year-old Scot said with a wry smile.

"I am looking forward to trying to regain the trophy. But it will be a tough task and a stiff competition for us as the Asian team are very strong."

Montgomerie said the Royal Trophy would be a good preparation for Europe's campaign in the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor in Wales in October.

Ozaki admitted that tomorrow's and Saturday's foursomes and four-ball matches would be very important before the singles on Sunday.

Montgomerie said that it would be hard to fight back if either side fall well behind after the first two days.

However, there are still many points to play for in the singles, he said.

"In our pairings, I will discuss with the players and to make them feel comfortable," he said.

The tournament starts with alternate shot matches tomorrow, followed by four-ball on Saturday and the singles on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Royal Trophy creator Seve Ballesteros delivered a hugely encouraging update on his own health to provide the perfect launch for this year's

competition.

Ballesteros said his doctors were delighted with his progress since undergoing brain surgery to remove a cancerous growth 15 months ago.

Ballesteros apologised for not being in Thailand for this year's Royal Trophy but spoke to both captains and their players in a phone conversation at the

press conference.

The Spanish golfing legend revealed his course of radiotherapy had left him far more exhausted than the chemotherapy that preceded it.

"Good luck to both teams, and I would like to finish by wishing you a happy and healthy 2010. I love you all," he said.

Ishikawa faces Monty in Royal opener Thongchai and Prayad handed tough start

Bangkokpost Published: 8/01/2010 at 12:00 AM

Asia's Ryo Ishikawa, the youngest player in the tournament, will meet Europe's Colin Montgomerie, the oldest golfer in the field, in today's opening foursomes at the fourth Royal Trophy at Amata Spring Country Club in Chon Buri.

Scotland's Montgomerie, who is also Europe captain, deliberately put himself against Ishikawa despite seeing the Japanese prodigy thrash another veteran in the Presidents Cup.

Ishikawa, 18, will partner compatriot Koumei Oda against 46-year-old Montgomerie and Pablo Martin of Spain starting at 11.15am.

As expected, Asia leader Naomichi ''Joe'' Ozaki paired players from the same country or those who are familiar with each other.

The strategy worked last year when Asia beat Europe 10-6 at the same venue for their first-ever triumph after two defeats in the annual Ryder Cup-style event.

Today's other three foursomes matches are India's Jeev Milkha Singh and Gaganjeet Bhullar v Denmark's Soren Kjeldsen and Peter Hanson of Sweden, South Korea's Charlie Wi and China's Liang Wen-chong v Swedes Alexander Noren and Robert Karlsson, and Thai duo Thongchai Jaidee and Prayad Marksaeng v Englishman Simon Dyson and Sweden's Henrik Stenson.

After the draw, Montgomerie said it was an honour to play against Ishikawa who faced Masters runner-up Kenny Perry three times in the 2009 Presidents Cup, and won all three matches.

''I just feel honoured and delighted to be playing with one of the world's most exciting young golfers,'' said Montgomerie who is also Europe captain for this year's Ryder Cup.

''It will be a very interesting match-up, and our friends in Japan will be particularly keen to see. I have never played with Ryo and I am looking forward to it.

''Japan and Asia have one of the brightest young talents in the game, and my partner and I have a real game on our hands taking on Ryo and his partner, Koumei Oda.''

The eight-time European Order of Merit winner said his squad welcomed the challenge as a team.

Swedish star Robert Karlsson
''The four matches look very evenly-matched, and it promises to be a wonderful opening day of golf,'' he said.

''It is a team competition, and it is all about winning as many points as possible. I will be very surprised if there is much to choose between the teams at the end of day one.''

Ishikawa delighted his audience in Bangkok by answering a question in English for the second day running.

''It is a great privilege to be playing against a great Ryder Cup player like Colin and his partner,'' said Ishikawa, won won the Japan Golf Tour's Order of Merit last year.

''It is important for us to play our best golf. I will go out there saying to myself: 'Just do it'.''

Another eye-catching foursomes clash sees Thongchai and Prayad take on world No.8 Stenson and in-form Dyson.

Thongchai and Prayad both finished with a perfect record in last year's victory, winning their foursomes, four-ball and singles matches.

Montgomerie guessed they would go out last again, and decided to try to dent their air of invincibility by putting his strongest pairing against them.

Stenson clinched the 2009 Players' Championship on the PGA Tour, while Dyson claimed two European Tour victories last year.

Montgomerie resisted the temptation to pair up 2008 World Cup winners Stenson and Karlsson, but hinted they may play together in the four-balls.

Asian Tour Order of Merit winner Thongchai said: ''Prayad and I are very happy that our captain has so much faith in us to fill this important anchor role once more.

''It will be a very tough match against two players who had a great season in 2009.''

The foursomes will be followed by four four-ball matches tomorrow and the singles on Sunday.

Europeans recapture Royal Trophy Asia push winners all the way to the end

Bangkokpost Published: 11/01/2010 at 12:00 AM

CHON BURI : Europe regained the Royal Trophy in dramatic fashion yesterday when Henrik Stenson holed the final putt to seal an 8 1/2-7 1/2 win over Asia.

The Swede sank a nervy seven-foot putt to halve with Thongchai Jaidee in the singles after the Thai had narrowly missed a 15-footer that would have forced a play-off at the Amata Spring Country Club.

It was Europe's third victory following wins in 2006 and 2007. Asia has captured His Majesty the King's trophy only once, last year.

World No 7 Stenson, the highest ranking player in the tournament, rallied from three holes down after 10 to earn a half point.

"It was a fantastic competition," said Europe's playing captain Colin Montgomerie.

"We had a strong team and it was very close but I didn't think it would be that close.

"All credit to this team of winners for fighting, they did great. It was a good start for European golf in a very important year."

Montgomerie, who is also Europe's captain for the 2010 Ryder Cup, played a key role in the triumph. He trailed China's Liang Wen-chong by two holes after 10 and fought back to halve the match.

The Scot put the match back to equal terms with a birdie on the 16th. Liang holed a 26-foot putt on the final hole that seemed to have gained a point but Montgomerie calmly responded with a long birdie.

Asia captain Naomichi "Joe" Ozaki raced to congratulate Liang after his mammoth putt but then stretched his arms in disbelief as Montgomerie's putt sank in.

Defending champions Asia, who beat Europe 10-6 last year, were one point behind after two days but started the final day brightly.

Japan's Koumei Oda thrashed Sweden's Alexander Noren 5&3 and South Korea's Charlie Wi beat Alexander Noren, another Swede, on the last hole to give Asia a 5 1/2 - 4 1/2 lead.

Moments later Swede Peter Hanson levelled the score with a comfortable 5&4 win over Japanese star Ryo Ishikawa.

India's Jeev Milkha Singh defeated Sweden's Robert Karlsson 2&1 as Asian held a 7-6 lead only for Europe to take a 8-7 advantage in the home stretch with two more wins.

Thailand's Prayad Marksaeng lost 2&1 to Spain's Pablo Martin while Indian Gaganjeet Bhullar was defeated by Denmark's Soren Kjeldsen by the same scoreline.

The competition then went to the wire with the Thongchai v Stenson match settled on the final hole.

Stenson stunned Thongchai when he holed a long putt on the 15th to put the match back on level terms. The Thai hit back with a clutch putt on the 17th to go one up only for the Swede to claim the last to win the trophy for Europe.

"I told the boys, I did not play great on the first two days but I also said I could maybe get something if I had to and I did," said Stenson who was also on Europe's winning sides in 2006 and 2007.

"It was a do-or-die moment. I wasn't playing good, I had to come back from three down and I knew I had the chance to win it.

"It wasn't the easiest to hole but I finished it off."

Asked if he was under pressure to make the most important putt of the tournament, he said: "Yes, I could feel it."

He said Montgomerie would be a good Ryder Cup skipper.

"He is a great captain. He looks into every detail," he said.

Montgomerie said that the tournament had given him a golden opportunity to witness several Ryder Cup hopefuls at close quarters.

"I have seven potential clients if you like for my Ryder Cup team in October. I am watching them and how they are performing and integrating into the team environment," he said.

"There is a great wealth of talent in Europe to choose from and I will have a difficult decision when picking my three wild cards."

Ozaki praised his players and said he had his sights set on taking the match to a play-off.

"Before Thongchai stepped up to make the putt I had a scenario in my mind," he said.

"I thought it would go in and we would throw our hats into the air and we would go into the play-off and win. It's a shame it didn't happen."

Thongchai was understandably disappointed.

He said: "I let the team down. I apologise to my team and captain Ozaki. I hope I get another chance next year."

Ishikawa, who picked up only one point out of three, was disappointed at his performance. But he said he had learned a lesson.

"The Europeans proved they are stronger mentally and I have many things to work on for this season," said the Japan Golf Tour's top-ranked player.

Thailand may set Muay Thai standards

Bangkokpost Published: 18/01/2010 at 12:00 AM

The government is preparing to propose a set of learning standards for Muay Thai (Thai boxing) to accommodate the expansion of boxing gyms overseas.

Though Muay Thai is gaining popularity in several foreign countries, gym owners and trainers are mostly foreign, and not all of them may be clear on the basics of the Thai traditional martial art, said Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot.

Muay Thai training in some cases has been modified to the extent that the Thai aspect has been completely lost, leading a number of Muay Thai lovers to abandon the sport, he said.

Coaching and officiating rules have also been changed beyond recognition, leading several countries to label Muay Thai as brutal.

To address this issue and promote genuine Thai boxing, Mr Alongkorn said a special panel would be set up to regulate and promote the sport, as well as expand Thai boxing gyms overseas.

As part of this effort, the government would require Thai and foreign trainers to pass standardised training courses certified by the Thai government before they are allowed to open gyms.

Mr Alongkorn said the government would speed up promotion of Muay Thai boxing schools overseas to create economic value apart from exports.

"Later this month, Thai action star Tony Jaa and I will fly to the United States to promote Muay Thai," he said.

Champions Denmark retain King's Cup

Thailand beaten in final game; Poland thrash Singapore 6-1 to finish second

Bangkokpost Published: 24/01/2010 at 12:00 AM

NAKHON RATCHASIMA: Denmark retained the King's Cup yesterday after beating Thailand 3-0 in their last round-robin match.

Denmark players and officials celebrate with the trophy after defeating Thailand 3-0 in the King’s Cup tournament in Nakhon Ratchasima.
Goals from Lekic Rajko, Johan Absalonsen and Martin Bernburg ensured that the Danes had a perfect record in the four-team tournament at His Majesty the King's 80th Birthday Anniversary Stadium.

In yesterday's other match, Poland thrashed Singapore 6-1 to finish second with two wins and one defeat.

Thailand were third with one win and two losses while Singapore lost all their three games.

With their superior skills and physique, Denmark were dominant throughout as the Thais tried to hit back with counter-attack.

There was little doubt about the outcome when Denmark went after after 18 minutes when Rajko headed home from a corner.

Absalonsen doubled the scoreline after 36 minutes for Denmark to lead 2-0 at half-time.

Thailand got off to a lively start in the second half when Sutee Suksomkit's long-range effort went over the bar.

Denmark goal-keeper Kim Christensen then had to save a fierce drive by Suttinun Phukhom in the 701th minute.

As Thailand failed to score, Bernburg finished off Bryan Robson's men with a late goal.

Poland’s Robak Marcin keeps Singapore’s Syaqir Sulaiman at bay.
Although Thailand suffered two heavy defeats following their 3-1 loss to Poland, coach Robson praised his players' fighting spirit.

''Our players worked very hard in the tournament,'' said the former England captain. ''Poland and Denmark were much stronger than us and we could not do anything.''

He said the tournament provided him a good opportunity to watch his players compete at this level.

The former Manchester United skipper said Thailand played much better in the second half and should not have conceded the third goal.

He said Thailand should have done better had they had their foreign-based player.

Privy Councillor Adm Chumpol Pajusanont, who represented His Majesty the King, presented the trophy to Denmark.

Proceeds from the sale of the tickets will go to aid relief efforts for Haiti.

England Confirm Friendly With Thailand For June 2011

May 10, 2010 11:35:00 AM

England have confirmed that they will travel to Asia next summer to play Thailand in a friendly international.

Fabio Capello's side will travel immediately their Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland next June to play the game, being held to mark the 65th anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol's accession to the Thai throne.

The Thai national side are managed by former England and Manchster United skipper Bryan Robson.

Whether the fixture scheduling will meet with the approval of Premier League managers remains to be seen, but the FA apparently believe that the game will help the bid to stage the World Cup in 2018.

The Premier League is, of course, massively popular all over South East Asia.

Sports centre to lift Phuket tourism

THE NATION Published on July 6, 2010

The Phuket International Academy Sports and Leisure Club is expected to usher in a new dimension of sports tourism to the resort island with world-class facilities when it opens in November.

"The development of the fully-integrated complex reflects the founders' vision in bringing a positive learning environment for the whole family and bringing a whole new level of what is available in Phuket," CEO Nicholas Seaver said yesterday.

"It will cooperate with the Tourism Authority of Thailand in promoting sports tourism in the country," he said.

As activities can be hosted all year round, tourism in Phuket will be less sensitive to the economic cycle, he said.

Phuket International Academy owns the US$45 million (Bt1.5 billion) complex, of which half of its 130 rai of space is allocated to the clubhouse.

The complex, the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia, offers three major facilities - the club, an international baccalaureate world school and a mind centre. The centre contains a 38-room boutique and lifestyle hotel and facilities to host conferences and retreats dedicated to bringing together ancient, contemplative practices with the best of modern psychology for improving a balanced and healthy mind.

The complex was developed by a group of Thais and Klaus Heebben, a foreign investor who has been in Phuket for four years. It will serve both locals and tourists.

"What we are doing is bring?ing a whole new dimension of tourism to Phuket that many hotels will benefit from," Seaver said.

"We also try to create a very positive and friendly working environment. The complex will offer a family-friendly environment with a unique range of offerings," he said.

The international school, which occupies about 50 rai of land, has already been open for two years, while the mind centre has been open since April. From 76 students now, it expects enrolment to grow to 700 in five years.

The club has selected the prestigious World Sports Destination Expo, running at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa from today to Friday, as the global event to launch itself to the world as a premier sports and corporate event facility in Thailand.

The club boasts an extensive array of high-class sporting facilities including an International Rugby Board-standard rugby pitch, FIFA-approved Limonta "Soccer Pro" soccer field, Phuket's only com?petition standard 25-metre and 50-metre swimming pools, a six-court tennis academy, a 500-metre athletics running track and a StarTrac-equipped hi-tech gymnasium. A dedicat?ed arts centre and a Thai herbal garden spa are also included to compliment the sports facilities.

"All those sports and leisure facilities are international stan?dard and allow us to host professional athletes and teams as well as provide on-parallel facilities for Phuket residents and amateur athletes seeking to continue their training," he said.

Nadal to play in Thailand Open

Bangkokpost 23/07/2010

World number one Rafael Nadal will play at the Thailand Open in September, organisers said Thursday, raising hopes of a boost to the country's tourism industry in the wake of deadly unrest.

The Spaniard has pulled out twice in the past three years due to injuries.

The president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand, Suwat Lipatapanlop, said he hoped Nadal's debut in Thailand would lure back tourists after anti-government protests turned deadly in April and May.

"I hope his appearance will give the country a good image," he said.

The protests in Bangkok sparked violence that left 90 people dead, nearly 2,000 injured and Thailand's reputation as a safe holiday destination in question -- although foreign tourists are now slowly returning.

Nadal, who has also won the French Open five times, said he was fit to play at the 600,000-dollar tournament.

"With my health and body in good shape, I am really looking forward to playing some great tennis for Thai fans," he said in a statement.

US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro is also set to play at the event, which runs until October 3.

King Power to set up Leicester FC academy in Thailand

The Nation Published on August 19, 2010

With the takeover of Leicester City Football Club, Vichai Raksriaksorn, chairman and chief executive of King Power Group, is set to turn Thailand into the Asian football-academy hub.

"We are now looking at potential locations, which may be one of my own land plots in Bangkok or near Suvarnabhumi Airport," he said.

"I also believe that by getting involved and owning a football club in England, I will be able to promote football youths in Thailand to play at the international level."

Milan Mandaric, who will stay on as chairman at Leicester City at least until the end of this year, said he shared Vichai's view that the club should expand its academy network in Thailand.

While Thailand had promising players, professional coaches were scarce. More were needed to provide the right training programmes.

"The establishment of the Leicester City club's academy in Thailand will provide local talents a chance to improve their skills to the world-class level and will also bring a reputation to Thailand," Mandaric said.

Many hundreds of millions of baht would be spent in setting up the Leicester City football academy in Thailand, he said.

Aiyawatt, a son of Vichai who recently became Leicester City's executive director, said he had long been passionate about football. After studying the extensive history of the Leicester City club, its impressive performance and the reputation of the Leicester City Academy, he was convinced that establishing the academy in Thailand would bring great benefit to local players.

"We expect to complete the establishment of the Leicester City academy in Thailand within 12 months. The club will also send its academy staff to provide training programmes to local players," he said.

Under the deal, Leicester City's football stadium will be renamed from Walkers Stadium to King Power Stadium by December.

At the press conference yesterday, Vichai promised more financial support for new buyers and the academy facilities. His challenge is to make Leicester City achieve Premiership status by next season.

The deal was wrapped up last week, sponsored by a personal-investment consortium called Asia Football Investments. The exact value of the 100-per-cent stake was not disclosed. Vichai said he would hold only 51 per cent, while the remaining 49 per cent would be opened for investors from Thailand and the region, such as Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and China.

"Football is my second-favourite sport after polo," said Vichai, 52. His duty-free group King Power about 10 years ago sponsored the Chelsea Football Club in the English Premier League for six straight years, he said.

The takeover of Leicester would fulfil his dream of owning a football club, though King Power Group has sponsored many teams in the Thai League, including Bangkok United FC and Police United. The group was a major sponsor of the Buriram PEA Football Club.

"The English Championship club Leicester City is a very interesting club. It has great potential to achieve Premiership status. The passion to reach the status will strengthen the club and enable it to move forward to the goal," he said.

"We're also impressed with the club's well-established academy. All of these are the reasons we do not feel hesitant in the least to enter this joint investment."

What was on the site of the Rajamangala stadium before it was built? I know the area was already a sports complex but what, if anything, was on the site of the actual stadium?

Also, if anyone has any photos of the stadium under construction then I'd love to see them. Thanks.

Thailand remains value golf destination

Published: 12/04/2011 at 12:00 AM

The average round of golf was 29% cheaper in Thailand than in other leading golf destinations in Asia, according to a recent survey.

The survey across six countries conducted by Asian golf vacation specialists Golfasian compared the midweek high-season visitor rates and found Thailand has some of the most competitive golf rates for visitors across Asia and the Middle East.

The most expensive golf course was US$271 (8,200 baht) at the Emirates Club's Majlis course, home to the Dubai Desert Classic. The lowest rate was $111 (3,400 baht) at Bangkok's Muang Kaew Golf Club.

Mark Siegel, the founder of Golfasian, said the survey showed there was a large difference in golf course prices in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and the UAE. For example, a round of golf at Black Mountain Golf Club in Hua Hin, which recently hosted both the Asian Tour Masters and the Royal Trophy, was only $130. But another Asian Tour venue, Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore, charged $238 per round. The cost of lodging, transportation and food and beverages are also lower in Thailand.

The Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort starts from $130, whereas starting rates at the Hilton Kuala Lumpur are $177. The Marriott Hua Hin Resort and Spa charges $157 while the Singapore Marriott has their best rate at $335.
