Air travellers losing their belts

KUCHING: More and more people boarding aircraft at the Kuching International Airport are having to hold their pants up with their hands.

The young trend-setters are forced to do so as their belt buckles are confiscated at security checkpoints at the airport.

"Airport security officers are confiscating belts that have large buckles that could easily be turned into a weapon," KIA senior airport manager Sunif Naiman said yesterday after Deputy State Secretary Datuk Morshidi Abdul Ghani opened a one-day occupational safety and health awareness campaign at the airport.

"We don't have the numbers but the number of belts confiscated has increased.

"They may be a beautiful accessory or trendy, but under the heightened security alert at airports across the world, we see these buckles as a threat to safety.

"They therefore come under the list of items that are restricted from being brought into aircraft."

The ones Malaysia Airport security officers look for are buckles that could, for example, be turnedinto a knuckle-duster or a weapon similar to a cock spur.

Even buckles in the shape of a gun are not spared, nor are pendants in the shape of bullets.

Sunif said: "Passengers may claim it's only in the shape of a bullet.

"To us and all security officers at airports around the world, a bullet is a bullet and it could pose a threat.

"We are all operating within Annex 17 of the security guidelines issued by the International Civil Aviation Organisation."

Scissors continue to top the list of items confiscated from passengers at the airport.

Tiger Airways budget flight to Kuching,
Malaysia; to expand fleet in Singapore
Monday, November 24, 2008, 10:57

Tiger Airways, a low-cost airline based in Singapore, has announced its plans to expand its fleet in Singapore with the addition of two Airbus A319s aircraft in 2009.

Tiger Airways, with its primary hub at Singapore’s Changi Airport, is currently the largest low-cost airline operating out of Singapore in terms of passengers carried. The airline was the first to operate from the Budget Terminal in Changi Airport in order to achieve operating-cost savings, and its cost structure is modelled after Ryanair, the low-cost airline based in Dublin, Ireland. Tiger Airways started flights to India in October 2007.

Rosalynn Tay, managing director of Tiger Airways, said in a pres release: “Given the rate of liberalisation occurring in the ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) region, Tiger Airways is quickly taking 2 more brand-new aircraft into its Singapore-based fleet. The beauty of having smaller Airbus A320-family aircraft is that we have a plane that is 98% the same as our A320s, but with less seats and a lower operating cost. This is the perfect aircraft for route development and ensures that the airline is in the right position to exploit new opportunities as they are presented.”

“The Airbus A319,” Rosalynn Tay added, “has been successfully operated with low-fare airlines across the world such as Easyjet and Spirit in the United States. The A319 is a proven low-fare aircraft type. With these additional aircraft, we have the opportunity to expand aggressively our paw-print to more destinations with our famous low, low fares.”

At present, Tiger Airways is recruiting pilots, cabin crew and support staff to be based in Singapore.

Meanwhile, Tiger Airways has launched low-fare service to Kuching in eastern Malaysia.

The inaugural flight was greeted by Datuk Michael Manyin anak Jawong, Sarawak’s Minister of Urban Development and Tourism.

The Tiger Airways passengers onboard the inaugural flight were given a friendly welcome by locals adorned in traditional outfits and were presented with bead garlands upon arrival.

To celebrate the launch of the service to Kuching, Tiger Airways is offering a deal of free seats for a limited time – travellers only have to pay the airport charges and taxes.

“Tiger Airways has made history by being the first low-fare airline from Singapore to fly to East Malaysia, right in Kuching,” Rosalynn Tay, managing director of Tiger Airways Singapore, said in the press release. “Since 2004, we have been in active dialogue with ASEAN governments to allow Tiger Airways to link Singapore with ASEAN nations with our low, low fares.”

Tiger Airways’ new low-fare flights to Kuching will depart Singapore at 14:35 and arrive at Kuching at 15:55. Flights from Kuching will depart at 16:25, arriving in Singapore at 17:45.

Tiger Airways to boost tourism in Sarawak
Saturday November 22, 2008

KUCHING: Sarawak expects a 30% increase in arrivals from Singapore following a fourth airline servicing the Singapore-Kuching route.

State Tourism and Urban Development Minister Datuk Michael Manyin said if the state could tap 3% of the seven million tourists from Europe, Japan, South Korea and Australia visiting Singapore annually, it would help boost its tourism industry.

He was speaking to reporters after welcoming 177 passengers on board the Tiger Airways inaugural flight that landed at the Kuching International Airport on Thursday afternoon.

The other airlines providing the Singapore-Kuching direct service are Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and SilkAir.

Last year, Sarawak recorded some 33,000 visitors from the republic.

Sarawak Tourism Board chief executive officer Gracie Geikie urged local hoteliers to offer special rates to visitors from Singapore to reciprociate what their counterparts had done for visitors from Sarawak.

She said the state has about 5,500 hotel rooms of three-star status and above.

Geikie said 3,000 more rooms would be ready in the next two years with the completion of several new hotels here.

All set for B747 historic landing

KUCHING: A B747 aircraft with a full load of passengers onboard will make a historic landing at the Kuching International Airport here tomorrow. The jumbo jet, from Kuala Lumpur, is expected to touch down at 4.40pm, shortly after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has toured the extended airport runway.

“The runway, measuring 3,800m, is the longest in Borneo,” Global Upline Sdn Bhd adviser Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing said yesterday.

Global Upline is the turnkey contractor of the RM850mil extension project. The airport terminal building has earlier been upgraded and extended.

“The runway can now take the Airbus 380,” Ting said, adding that Najib would receive a certificate from the Department of Civil Aviation to mark the event.

The certificate will then be handed over to acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

Ting said Najib would also open Global Upline’s Four Points by Sheraton Hotel near the airport.

On the RM760mil extension and upgrading project for the Kota Kinabalu Airport runway and terminal two building, Ting said it would be completed in 10 months.

Global Upline is also the contractor for a similar project at the Labuan Airport.

The RM360mil project is also nearing completion.

Kuching International Airport Set For B747 And A380 Landing

KUCHING, June 17 (Bernama) - A Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Boeing 747 aircraft with a full load of passengers made a historic landing at the Kuching International Airport (KIA) here Wednesday.

The jumbo jet from Kuala Lumpur, piloted by MAS Senior General Manager of Flight Operations Division, Datuk Captain Ahamd Zuraidi Dahalan, touched down at 5.05pm on the newly completed extended runway of KIA.

The extended runway, from 2,454m previously to 3,780m now, has also made it the longest in Borneo and the fourth in South East Asia after the KL International Airport, Singapore's Changi Airport and Bangkok's airport.

It can now take the Airbus 380.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who toured the runway earlier, declared open the extended runway.

Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) Director General Datuk Azharuddin A.Rahman handed over the certificate of Operational Readiness of Runway Extension to Najib.

Also present was Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

With a pavement width of 60m, the runway is to cater for the Boeing 747 aircraft having a frequency of 1,200 annual departures.

The runway fully complies with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) requirements, include visuals aids such as glide path, localizer, Precision Approach Light (PAL), runway and taxiway lighting and signs.

The extension of the runway is the final stage of the redevelopment of KIA valued at nearly RM800 million. The terminal building's upgrading and extension was completed earlier.

Global Upline Sdn Bhd was the turnkey contractor and it took four years to complete.

In his message in the souvenir book, Taib said the completion of the extended runway was of great significance to the economic development of Sarawak particularly since it would be able to handle the unhindered operations of Boeing 747-500 or even the Airbus 380.

He said the bigger cargo load would provide greater efficiency for the operations of industries around Kuching.

"The project is yet another contribution and a continuing show of support of the federal government to the economic growth of the peoples and the state of Sarawak," he said.

Upgraded Kuching airport set to bring in more visitors

KUCHING: The upgraded Kuching International Airport, with its newly-extended runway, will signal a new era in air travel and connectivity for Sarawak, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said he was optimistic that with enhanced connectivity, tourist ar**rivals in Sarawak would increase by leaps and bounds if the state was promoted in a big way.

“Sarawak has many unique attractions,’’ he said after launching the 3.8km-long runway yesterday.

A Boeing 747 jumbo jet with a full pas*senger load landed shortly after Najib was taken on a tour of the ex**tended runway in a convoy of cars.

The runway, which can also take an Airbus 380, was part of a RM800mil project to upgrade the airport.

The project’s turnkey operator was Global Upline Sdn Bhd.

Najib also officially opened the 420-room Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, built and owned by Global Upline.

He said with the new hotel, Sara*wak could promote itself as a centre for international conferences and se**minars, and an eco-tourism destination.

He said the total RM1bil investment in the airport and hotel had gi**ven the state’s economy a big boost.

Earlier, Chief Minister Tan Sri Ab**dul Taib Mahmud said the upgraded airport would better position Sara*wak in the global tourism map.

He commended Global Upline for its investment in the hotel, adding that previous major hotels built mostly involved public investments.

Global Upline advisor Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing said the four-star Four Points by Sheraton Hotel provided five-star service.

KUCHING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is optimistic that the state tourism industry will grow further with the completion of the extension of Kuching International Airport (KIA) runway.

He said with the extension, the state’s air connectivity would be further enhanced, as the longer airport runway would be able to attract international airlines with bigger aircraft.

“I am very optimistic that KIA with its longer runway now will give impetus to the state tourism industry because it will attract international airlines,” Najib told a press conference here yesterday.

He said this when officiating at the grand opening of Four Points By Sheraton Hotel.

Earlier on, he declared open the KIA runway extension, the ceremony of which was held simultaneously at the hotel.

The prime minister pointed out that the extension project would not only develop the state, but also the country as a whole.

He stressed that air connectivity and accessibility was very important to develop the state and country, adding that the state was blessed with many features that tourists wanted to see.

Najib said many people wanted to see new and unique products, which the state has plenty to offer.

The state has plenty of eco-tourism destinations, he added.

“If Sarawak can be promoted in a big way coupled with a bigger airport, I am confident that many tourists will come in the future,” the prime minister pointed out.

He also said that the development of airports in the country would increase air connectivity and accessibility related to the development of the country as a whole.

Air accessibility, he said, would help to promote national integration, which would augur well for the 1Malaysia concept.

Regarding the hotel, Najib said it would help to attract international seminars and conference that would also help boost local tourism.

The total investment of RM1 billion in the two projects would give added impetus to the state’s economy, he said.

Najib then commended the efforts of Global Upline which undertook both projects and completed ahead of time and with good work quality.

Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, Health Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai, Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Robert Lau, Global Upline advisor Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing, Global Upline managing director Datuk Mohamad Danel Abong and Najib’s wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor were among those present at the function.

KUCHING: Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said the fact that the Kuching International Airport (KIA) runway extension was completed using 12 million cubic metres of soil to fill the swampy site proved that Malaysians had the capability to implement more major development projects.

He said the advisor of the contractor Global Upline Sdn Bhd, Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing, had emerged from a small-time contractor to what he is today due to hard work and perseverance.

“We have witnessed many cases of Malaysians capable of carrying out major infrastructure projects.

“As for Ting, he is renowned for accomplishing projects ahead of schedule and the BDC flyover is one of them,” he said, adding that contractors’ competency would contribute greatly to both the state and national economy.

Taib also lauded Ting for constructing Four Points, which had helped increase the number of hotel rooms in the city.

Earlier, Ting asserted that many Malaysian contractors were capable of implementing major development projects nationwide if they had the means as well as opportunities.

He felt that it was the coordination between the government and the private sector that would determine the possibility and later the success of various infrastructure development projects.

“Many contractors in the nation can deliver what the government wants. The key is coordination with and in the government. In the meantime, we, the contractors, have to gear up the effort to help the government achieve its goals.”

It was vital for contractors to complete their respective projects within the scheduled time or better, ahead of schedule, he said.

He added that such efficiency would help not only bring down the project cost but also build up or further boost confidence from the government.

“Anything that you want to do, with determination, it can be done,” he stressed.

On Four Points, Ting said the hotel was meant to be a “people’s hotel” so that the general communities could afford the expenses.

“Four Points is built to suit the public, making hotel services more affordable to people. It is now providing five-star services for customers who are charged with four-star expenses,” he said.

Four Points by Sheraton Kuching is strategically located 2km from KIA and 5km south of the city centre.

It has 421 spacious guestrooms that combine stylish comfort and functional design. Guests will also get to choose from six different room types.

Regarding the completion of the airport runway, he said it was a historical moment for all.

“Besides being a boost to eco-tourism in Sarawak, it is a milestone to many more successes,” he said before Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak officially opened Four Points by Sheraton.

Like Najib, he was confident that the extended runway would place Kuching city in a better position on the tourism map.

“With the support from the federal government, KIA is now capable of accommodating Airbus

380 and in the near future, it is hoped that more flights will come from Europe,” he said.

Kuching International Airport Set For B747 And A380 Landing
June 17, 2009 21:28 PM

Eastar Jet starts flights to Kuching next month

KUCHING: Seoul-based low cost airline Eastar Jet will be making 11 scheduled chartered flights here starting next month, bringing into Sarawak 1,300 tourists from South Korea.

Eastar Jet chairman and chief executive officer Lee Sang-Jik said the flights which commence on Dec 24 would be like an early Christmas gift to the people in the state from the Koreans.

He said Kuching would be a perfect escape for Koreans from the winter back home, as well as provide golf-crazy Koreans a cheaper and warmer place to play golf.

According to him, South Korea has the highest per capita percentage of golf players in the world with eight million out of its population of 48 million people into it.

The weather in South Korea can be as cold as minus-six degrees Celsius during winter.

“Kuching is our first destination in Malaysia. If the response is good, we will also be looking into flights to Miri.

“We want to help Sarawak to possibly double its GDP (gross domestic product) growth …. We are building a ‘highway in the sky’ connecting Sarawak and Korea,” he told a press conference after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Eastar Jet and Sarawak state government yesterday.

Eastar Jet, solely owned by KIC group, will fly to Kuching on Dec 24, 27 and Dec 31 and on Jan 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24 next year. Each flight will take about six hours and 20 minutes.

The type of aircraft to be used will be the Boeing 737-700, while tourists will be staying at Damai Beach Resort hotel. Their stay was arranged by four Korean based agencies namely Myungbo Travel, BA Tours, Royal Travel and Narae Travel.

The signing of the MoU was for Eastar Jet to fly into Sarawak and provide air accessibility from Korea to Sarawak and vice versa.

Tourism and Urban Development Minister Dato Sri Michael Manyin, who represented the state government at the signing ceremony, said this new air link would result in a significant increase of tourists from Korea.

He said this was the result of aggressive campaigning in the republic since September which saw the state government collaborate with Gangjin Baseball Park and other organisations from that country.

“We are considered a latecomer in tapping the Korean market. But the interest among Koreans in Sarawak has increased ever since we appointed an agent there, and we expect the tourist arrivals to double or even increase 10-fold,” he said.

To a question, he said Eastar Jet’s flights to Kuching do not require approval from the Ministry of Transport as these are chartered flights.

“They only need approval from the airport authority,” he said.

He hoped these flights will promote more joint ventures between Sarawak and South Korea, adding that KIC Group is discussing hotels and golf course development with Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC).

The KIC Group is also planning to purchase five more Boeing 737-700 for Eaststar Jet, making it 10 altogether by next year.

They also have overseas business interests in Canada, Philippines and Vietnam.

Kuching International Airport Records Higher Passenger Volume, Says MAHB

By Caroline Jackson

KUCHING, Dec 2 (Bernama) -- The passenger volume at the Kuching International Airport rose by seven per cent to 2.9 million between January and October from 2.7 million in the same period last year, said Datuk Azmi Murad, Senior General Manager (Operations) of Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB).

"The Miri, Sibu and Bintulu airports also saw more passengers using our airport facilities.

"We are looking at improving the facilities at all times," he told BERNAMA after launching Apron Safety Campaign 2009 at the Kuching International Airport.

Azmi said the Kuching International Airport, in operations for 26 years, did not see any major mishaps at the airside area.

"The airport's reputation would be at stake if there were mishaps due to human negligence and lack of safety management, he said.

On the progress of the new Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) project near the KL International Airport in Sepang, Azmi said MAHB aimed to complete the RM1.2 billion facility in the third quarter of 2011.

"We are working closely with budget airline AirAsia and work is going on well," he said, adding that once operational, the LCCT would have 30 million passenger capacity a year.

It would also have the provision for future expansion to handle up to 45 million air travellers per year.

He, however, said there was no immediate plan to build a similar terminal in Sarawak as the existing airports were able to handle current passenger volume.

The focus on safety of airports and to make them on par or higher than other airports in the region would be more challenging in future, he said.

Azmi said Sarawak had a lot to offer, especially for foreign airlines and as such, MAHB would continue to support other airlines to ensure efficient operations.

KIA among the country’s safest airports
By Geryl Ogilvy Ruekeith Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

http://www.theborneopost.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/0000506316.jpg

LIKE THIS: Azmi (front) demonstrates the proper
way to put out a fire with an extinguisher.

KUCHING: The Kuching International Airport (KIA) is among the best nationwide in the implementation of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) management system.

In its 26 years of operation, there have been no major incidences reported at KIA’s airside area and last Aug 24, it received the Safety Management System (SMS) Certificate from the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA).

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAB) operations senior general manager Datuk Azmi Murad said KIA had received the SMS Certificate ahead of Singapore’s Changi Airport.

“It is our priority to achieve a zero-level incidence rate. For every 1,000 aircraft movements, our incidence rate now is only about 0.0053 per cent.

“Considering that KIA handles an average of 100 movements per day, the volume is 36,500 yearly. Based on our incidence rate of 0.0053 per cent daily, annually our incidence rate is 0.193 per cent, which is still below 1 per cent. That is the benchmark that we will measure on,” he said at the launching of the ‘Apron Safety Campaign 2009’ yesterday.

Azmi pointed out that besides KIA, only four other international airports in the country lived up to that benchmark.

He explained that an airport’s achievement is not only measured by the number of passengers, aircraft and cargo handled every year or awards won, but also the safety aspect of its operations.

He added that airports must be in compliance with the regulations set by regulatory bodies such as the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Airports Council International (ACI) and DCA.

Azmi also said that all agencies must work as a team as every agency played its role to ensure that the airport is free from any untoward incidents and accidents.

“MAB and all other agencies at the airport must make it a top priority to tackle any OSH issues at the airside area. The safety requirements must be met and all non-value added factors must be eliminated. It will save protective time and operation cost,” he said.

He further advised all airport enforcement units to take action on any safety lapse involving staff working at the airport.

Azmi emphasised that aircraft accidents not only occurred in the air, but also happened on the ground if proper safety measures are not followed according to the specifications of regulatory bodies such as ICAO and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

“It is important to enhance the aspect of safety awareness at the airside area together with the airline operator committee, ground handlers, DCA and other agencies in order to ensure all of us follow safety requirements,” he said.

Meanwhile, KIA senior manager Sunif Naiman said the ‘Apron Safety Campaign 2009’ was the first ever organised involving all agencies related to KIA operations.

Themed ‘Safety is Everybody’s Responsibility - Think Safety, Work Safely’, Sunif said the campaign aimed to enhance awareness and make known OSH mandatory requirements to all KIA staff regarding OSH in the workplace.

“The campaign will be a platform for all KIA workers and operators to share safety information, to promote safe work practices and to minimise and avoid all unnecessary incidents and accidents,” he said.

National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) state office head Ahmad Zaki, a speaker for the campaign, said it is vital for KIA to practise OSH regulations.

“Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) 94, airports operations fall under the Transport, Storage and Communication Industries of the 10 industries required to practise the OSHA 94,” he said.

He explained that although it is not mandatory for KIA to appoint a Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) officer, the safety code of conduct must be strictly practised.

“Safety, health and welfare are the responsibility of those who created the risk and those exposed to it. It is important for KIA to protect all its guests, adopt a working environment that is safe theoretically and physically,” stressed Ahmad.

He further advised all major organisations to install a safety policy in the workplace with a Hazards Identification, Risk Assessment and Risk Control (HIRARC) system to further improved the OSH Management System.

Well... KKIA design is like rojak for me... Seems like they want every designs but end up too complicated and makes ppl feel squeezy in there...

KIA is more efficient... They wont let planes stay long here... Almost every 10mins there are landings or departures going on.. So Passengers are Spreaded out well... Dats why KIA dont seem busy all the time... haha..

And i noticed that KIA is more cooling compared to other airports in our country...
But anyway... KK is always one step behind us... airport we started first then KK start a complicated one.. Our runway just finished extended then kk start extending their runway.. Our BCCK Opened and now KK is planning wad MICE building.. LOL... Cant be so similar time similar project ba...

I love KIA compared to KKIA T1. KIA has more shops compared to KKIA T1. Although much more crowded than KKIA T1, but I like the way they manage the airport users. For example at the check-in areas, there are ample space for people to mingle around, although at peak hours/seasons, AA check-in counters are flooded with long queues. KKIA T1 is of course more beautiful and bigger lah... but it looks empty because many people use KKIA T2. One more thing, with that so nicely designed KKIA T1, why parking areas are still at open spaces? They should've constructed a multi-storey carpark building just like KLIA one... or cover it up with roof or something. Yet still, being bigger, more beautiful and more sofisticated doesn't mean anything if the carpark are still like the one at pasar malam.

Btw, as for the KIA, I think AA is now using Gate 8 & 9 because there are not enough boarding gates to cater the low-cost carriers.

Btw, as for the KIA, I think AA is now using Gate 8 & 9 because there are not enough boarding gates to cater the low-cost carriers.[/QUO

How many times have u been in KKIA ? Don't be blinded by your semangat kenegerian..KKIA is 3 times bigger ..and remember in KK alone there are two airports..international and low cost airport ..cheers mate...

I've been to KKIA T1 twice. I felt the area (in term of width) is not so big compared to KIA, and yet, less crowded. Maybe passenger volume is too much taken over by KKIA T2.

Even with that condition, they're going to split T1 into domestic and international some more. I can foresee more wastage of space at this terminal, while people in T2 are flocking through their way just to get a space to stand up.

I don't mind having bigger airports, coz I think KKIA deserves that... but the most important thing is how well-managed the airports are. You can have 2 airports, but it's useless if one is too crowded till u can't catch a breath, and another one is too serene and kosong so that u can have all the air in the world to breath. Personally I think, T1 is enough to cater for KKIA thriving aircraft movements. There is no need to have that reban ayam T2 for the low-cost.

The initial plan was to built BKI T1 much bigger, and more high-tech where luggage are scanned after check-in like KLIA. In the end, maybe due to budget constraint, the plan was scrapped.

The number of Gates are also reduced from the initial plan. Now the number of narrow-body gates stand at 5 and wide-body is at 4 (Gate 2 - 5). Same as KCH. KCH serves more domestic travellers while BKI caters to most Northern Passengers like those from Taiwan, Japan, China and Korea. It is rather unfortunate that KCH loose out to BKI in terms of DIRECT International Passengers.

This CNY alone, Korean Air operated 747-400 while China Eastern flew direct to Pudong using the 320. Not to mentioned that Asiana flies to BKI and not even KUL making it the 2nd destination apart from SIN.

Apparently Kuching is not attractive to Koreans.

Here are some pics of the on going renovation in KCH.

Okay.. Let me to join the war. 1st of all, KK dont have 2 airports!! There are only 2 terminals. Terminal 1 and 2. If that is considered as Airport, why dont we call it Airport 1 and airport 2 then? An airport consist of terminals/terminal, air control tower, landing strip, cargo area.

For me, KK only have the bigger terminal if compared to Kuching. If compared by land area???

KK do have more passanger than KIA, that is because most of the passanger are local. KKIA have advantage because there are direct route to internatioal destination. But how many is the margin. From the information above, KKIA have 1,293,894 more passanger than KIA. That is Because Sabah has bigger population than Sarawak. All people from Sabah go there. Kuching, there are KIA, Miri Airport and Sibu Airport. Now, i don't know what to add. Erm, ooh ya. KIA has longer landing strip compared to KKIA. And KIA Can handle fully loaded B747 and A380. KKIA?

Oh yeah yeah... I heard the news from Kong Cho Ha last time, they blamed JAS for the delay. Oh.. at least they have some news on the runway extension work, as for KIA, it's none! The extension just stop halfway and there's no sign of the works going to progress anymore! Nice but crowded. Sometimes people just wander around inside the boarding hall because there are no place to sit. Even the walking areas have been conquered with lots of small2 kiosks. For God's sake I don't know how those kiosks survive - they're selling diamonds and stuff, which you know what's the price tag for each of them... and yet, with not so many customers swarming in, they still can occupy much space of the boarding areas. :ohno::ohno:

Victor18
August 22nd, 2010, 05:12 PM
^^ KLIA has kiosks too but much lesser than KIA, but yeah its rather weird to see so many of them occupying the main walkways and halls. Maybe by expanding another terminal might solve this cause those kiosks will tend to be more widespread rather than just being placed in the main terminal.

For God's sake I don't know how those kiosks survive - they're selling diamonds and stuff, which you know what's the price tag for each of them... and yet, with not so many customers swarming in, they still can occupy much space of the boarding areas. :ohno::ohno:

as u knw price at the airport is relatively higher than those outside..with less customer but high margin, for sure they can make profit..in my opnion the mre the shops, the more excitement for those travelling..

The runway extension seems like not going to complete forever. I travelled to and fro Kuching frequently and sadly to say the runway extension construction looked like stopped halfway already. I don't know what's the problem. The construction of Jalan Stutong near the site also idle. Kementerian Pengangkutan (Kemutan) really have to look into this lah. It's an eyesore to tourists to see this incomplete runway extension site being abandoned.

Bukan dah siap kah???:bash: Only the stutong road haven't finish yet. I think they are extending the road at bdc 1st, then go to stutong... maybe la...

^^ KLIA has kiosks too but much lesser than KIA, but yeah its rather weird to see so many of them occupying the main walkways and halls. Maybe by expanding another terminal might solve this cause those kiosks will tend to be more widespread rather than just being placed in the main terminal.

To my surprise, 2nd level of the airport arrival area is barely empty and used. It's only been used to separate international arrival and domestic arrival. Those space-craving kiosk can move up there if they want.

They should not let the kiosks compete directly with the shops as the kiosk rent is much lower than the shop and hence they are able to sell at lower price. Different brand ok, but not the same brand.

Increasing use of self-check in kiosks at Kuching airport
Story and photo by RINTOS MAIL Friday September 24, 2010

For you: Crocker (right) presenting a mock ticket to one of the lucky draw
winners of Malaysia Airlines/MASwings’ self check-in kiosk Zainuddin Hussaini
at Kuching International Airport.

MASwings is optimistic with the usage rate of its self check-in kiosk at the Kuching International Airport (KIA).

Its Corporate Communications head for Sarawak, Melissa Crocker said the company was targeting the usage rate to reach 50% by end of the year.

“We are confident the target is achievable in view of the increasing number of passengers using the kiosk for the first time and their repeat usage.

“KIA handles an estimated 1500 passengers per day and this means we have to secure an average of 750 passengers daily to meet the 50% target,” she told newsmen at KIA in Kuching yesterday.

Earlier, Melissa presented complimentary return air tickets to the winners of Malaysia Airlines/MASwings’ self check-in kiosk lucky draw.

She said 20 winners were drawn from over 30,000 users during the self check-in kiosk campaign between July and August this year.

The winners were presented with complimentary tickets to any of MASwings’ destination within the network of MASwings.

The campaign, she said had received overwhelming response from passengers of both Malaysia Airlines and MASwings.

She said since its introduction at KIA, the number of self check-in kiosk users increased significantly from the take-up rate of a mere 20% to an average of 35% to 40% per day.

Malaysia Airlines and MASwings introduced the self check-in kiosk at KIA on June 24 this year.

All the six kiosks utilises the New Airport S3 Kiosk System that employs touch-screen technology, equipped with passport and card readers for instant passenger recognition and prints 2D barcode boarding pass on thermal paper.

Passengers using the kiosk may check-in as early as 48 hours from the time of departure.

Direct flights from Japan, Korea a right move, says Audry
By CALVIN YEO Wednesday October 13, 2010
http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=/2010/10/13/sarawak/7212128&sec=sarawak

MALAYSIA AIRLINES’ (MAS) direct flights from Japan and South Korea to Kuching next year has been welcomed by the Sarawak Tourism Federation (STF) as a positive move to bring in more tourists from the two countries.

STF president Audry Wan Ullok said travel agents and hoteliers in the state had been hoping for the direct air link for quite some time.

“The Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) has put in a lot of effort to introduce the direct flights and we have been invited to come out with holiday packages for these Japanese and South Korean tourists,” she said.

STB chief executive officer, Datuk Rashid Khan had said that Sarawak wanted to attract 40,000 tourists from Japan and South Korea next year when the direct flights from both countries to the state capital commences in January next year.

MAS will operate flights three times a week from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, twice a week from Kansai Airport in Osaka and four times a week from Incheon Airport in Seoul to Kuching via Kota Kinabalu.

Audry said Sarawak’s main attraction for these tourists was its eco-tourism.

“Our rainforest and rich cultural heritage have been a good selling point for the Japanese and South Koreans who also enjoy golfing sessions at cheap prices whenever they visit the state,” she said.

The only obstacle, she reckoned was the lack of Japanese and Korean speaking tourist guides.

“To solve the problem for the time being, we just have to engage interpreters to break the communication barrier between the local tourist guides and the tourists.

“The good news is that the University College of Sedaya International is offering a two-year Japanese and Korean languages course. This could help to solve problem on the lack of tourist guides conversant with the two languages in the future,” she said.

A check with the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage Sarawak’s website revealed that visitors from Brunei topped the list of arrivals from January to April this year at 364,531, followed by Indonesia at 122,082, Philippines at 26,271, Singapore (12,615) and China (11,907).

Eraman Malaysia sees S’wak as a good revenue contributor
Posted on December 9, 2010, Thursday

KUCHING: Sarawak is a good contributor to Eraman Malaysia’s overall revenue besides the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) being the major revenue contributors to the company.
“In whichever market that we operate, we want to see that the business performance warrants us to have a retail presence over there and likewise so is Kuching,” said the head of Advertising and Promotions division of Eraman Malaysia, Bob Lee when met during a press conference held at Kuching International Airport.

According to Lee, Eraman Malaysia which is a subsidiary of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) recently embarked on Facebook as its e-commerce portal.

He pointed out that duty-free items were now available online for a selected range of products for the convenience as well as the benefit of travellers who do not have time to go to the shelves to do the selections.

“They can actually do so online and from there a lot of products will be available for them,” Lee added.

He pointed out that the added advantage was as a sort of introduction offer as Eraman Malaysia was providing discount to online customers.

“So on one hand you are getting duty free products which will be at least some percentage lesser than downtown and on top of that the online customers are getting added value by having discount vouchers,” said Lee.

When queried on the response from the customers towards the e-commerce portal and revenue contribution to Eraman Malaysia, he highlighted that while Eraman Malaysia did not expect that it would be a significant contributor to the revenue, the company did recognise that there was a trend among the general population as well as shoppers who were going online to shop.

“We are providing them with this additional means while monitoring the results and so far we everything is on track and in line with our expectations,” Lee added.

Lee highlighted that customers patronising the e-commerce portal must be travellers as necessary validations were required before they could enjoy the duty-free privileges.

Firefly rides on fast-growing route network
by Justin Yap justinyap@theborneopost.com. Posted on December 22, 2010, Wednesday

KUCHING: FlyFirefly Sdn Bhd (Firefly) aims for a larger presence in East Malaysia’s aviation industry through its fast-growing route network and the expansion of its airport ticketing offices (ATO).

http://www.theborneopost.com/newsimages/2855.jpg
NEWLY LAUNCHED: (From left) Firefly media relations executive Kalpana Deva, Raja Sa’adi, station manager Elizabeth Patrick Juwing and, event and campaign executive Natalya Matthew during the soft opening of Firefly’s airport ticketing office.
Firefly is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines Systems Bhd (MAS) that has been operating for three years. Currently, it flies to 19 cities and operates 24 routes within Malaysia, and to Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore.

The group’s marketing and communications manager Raja Sa’adi Raja Amrin pointed out that apart from the recent flight destina-tions that Firefly had pinpointed such as Kuching and Kota Kinabalu, it would

also be expanding its coverage to Miri and Sibu probably by next year.

“Based on the market research, Miri and Sibu will be the next potential destinations. We are expanding not just to East Malaysia but to other Asean destinations as well. We are thinking of foraying into Jakarta and Bandung,” he said during the opening of its ATO at Kuching International Airport (KIA) yesterday.

Firefly would also be launching its first ATO in Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) by early January next year.

“We believe that this will further enhance travelling opportunities

and simultaneously gene-rate encouraging rate of sales and recognition of our Kuching routers,” said its marketing and communications head, Angelina Corrina Fernandez.

“The presence of ticketing offices in Sarawak and Sabah is integral to Firefly’s aim to better serve its East Malaysian customers, especially those who do not have access to stable Internet connections or possess a credit or debit card,” she added.

Firefly would begin its operation on January 15, 2011 from the main terminal building of Kuala Lumpur International airport (KLIA) to Kuching and Kota Kinabalu twice daily and from January 24, 2011, four times daily and three times daily respectively.

According to Firefly managing director Datuk Eddy Leong during a press conference held in Petaling Jaya last month, the airline’s five-year expansion plan would bring in a total of 30 new aircraft. The airline would lease six Boeing 737-800s in 2011 and seven the following year.

“The Boeing 737 family aircraft has a reputation for being economical and reliable; traits that help airlines keep cost down and pass the savings on to passengers.

“A popular option among well-known airlines in Europe, the US and Asia, the single-aisle narrow body aircraft can seat up to 180 passengers,” said Leong.

Meanwhile, Firefly had also secured three more ATR 72-500 turboprop aircraft, which in 2011 would increase to a total of 10 aircraft. The new turboprop aircraft would be operating from the Subang and Penang airports.

On the other hand, an analyst from ECM Libra Capital Sdn Bhd (ECM Libra) expected Firefly’s cost per available seat kilometres (CASK) to be lower, leveraging on MAS’ existing infrastructure in engineering, maintenance, ground handling, flight operations, planning and control.

“It is important for Firefly to push its costs down in order to compete with other low-cost carriers (LCCs), especially AirAsia Bhd. Note that management has guided that Firefly’s CASK will be the lowest in the country,” the analyst added.

Speaking on the code share agreement between MAS and Firefly, TA Securities Holdings Bhd’s technology and transportation analyst underscored its benefits to both parties. The research firm said that this would allow MAS to expand its coverage and flight frequency without having to put in additional resources of their own.

Firefly was targeting an 80:20 cut between domestic and regional capacity within the next two years which was when almost half of its planned fleet would have been delivered. The group’s initial strategy was to ‘cherry pick’ lucrative domestic routes, tap the under-capacity in connecting flights for the domestic market and leverage on its parent’s international connectivity via code-sharing.

Touching on competition, the analysts in general agreed that Firefly was not a threat to AirAsia of yet, given the latter’s superior route network and fleet size tapping into the growing regional demand.

Firefly was found to be the first company in Malaysia and the second airline in the world to have a page on Foursquare, the location based social network that enables travellers to discover useful travel tips near their airports or destinations.

Aircraft skids on KIA runway

Posted on January 11, 2011, Tuesday

KUCHING: Passengers of an AirAsia flight last night (Monday night) experienced a rude shock when the aircraft skidded on the Kuching International Airport runway upon landing.

WHAT'S HAPPENING?: Anxious members of the public wait at KIA for passengers and latest updates from ground staff.

The incident happened around 10.15pm during a heavy downpour.

Initially, sources said four of the over 100 passengers were unwell. Some of those involved are said to suffer from asthma and heart problems, but the seriousness of their conditions could not be established.

Ambulances were, however, seen rushing to KIA to attend to passengers.

After the plane stopped moving, passengers said a flight attendant instructed them to calm down.

At some point smoke became visible inside the plane, leading to the opening of exit doors and activation of emergency slides.

The Borneo Post received a call from Balai Ringin assemblyman Snowdan Lawan, who was on the plane with his wife Melinda Claudia, regarding the incident around 10.30pm.

He said the first thing he grabbed was his iPad as it contained important documents.

SHAKEN BUT WELL: Snowdan (front second left) speaks to reporters.

“As we were seated in front, my wife and I were among the first to get off the plane. In fact my wife went out after me. I had to save the iPad,” he said.

Snowdan, who is Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) deputy secretary, said he travels regularly and had never had such a bad experience before.

He even lost his shoes in the mud. He and several others had to walk barefooted to the fire and rescue centre where they received attention from airport staff.

Snowdan said there were several children on the plane and most passengers were badly shaken by the ordeal.

He said it was possible the plane’s front tyre might have been damaged because he felt the plane was tilted at the front.

PLEASE HELP: A woman tries to get information from a staff member.

Around 11.30pm at the airport lobby, relatives and friends of the passengers as well as members of the media were seen waiting for news.

The flight had taken off from Kuala Lumpur around 7.40pm.

Prior to the incident, Snowdan said he had a premonition something bad was going to happen.

The first sign, he said, was when a disco ball dropped on the stage of the Anugerah Juara Lagu concert in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday night.

YOU'RE OKAY: Passengers console each other after the ordeal.

The second was when a child started crying in the plane a few minutes before landing.

He said there was turbulence during the flight, probably because of the heavy rain.

“Fortunately, there was no report of fatality. However, most of us passengers were shaken,” he said, jokingly adding that there would not be a by-election because he had survived.

Meanwhile, a few AirAsia flights were reportedly cancelled today (Tuesday).

A regular traveller said no reason was given for the cancellations.

“If it was not because of last night’s incident, then it should be due to the heavy rain today,” he said

Kuching airport reopens

KUCHING: The Kuching International Airport was reopened at 9pm Tuesday, after being closed following an incident involving an AirAsia aircraft Monday night.

The first aircraft to land after the airport reopened was MASwings Flight 3807 from Bintulu, which arrived at 9.45pm.

The second arrival was MASwings Flight 3155 from Kota Kinabalu/Sibu, at 10.10pm.

The first flight out was AirAsia AK6540 to Miri, which departed at 10pm.

It is also learnt that MAS has cancelled all its flight for the day and will resume flights on Wednesday.

However, AirAsia was expected to operate 16 flights into Kuching that had been cancelled earlier.

A Malaysia Airports Berhad (MAB) spokesman said the closure had affected some 80 flights, both incoming and outgoing, as at 9pm.

The airport was closed after an AirAsia aircraft skidded and veered off the airport's runway 25 when it tried to land during heavy rain.

Earlier Tuesday, MAB corporate communications senior general manager Datuk Azmi Murad said airport workers managed to remove the aircraft from the grassy area at 6pm and moved it onto the runway.

"We are now moving the aircraft very slowly to the hangar. Workers have also inspected the runway, while others will be replacing the runway lights that were damaged," said Azmi.

All passengers were evacuated safely from the aircraft.

Efforts to remove the aircraft had been hampered by continuous heavy rains.

AirAsia’s plans for Kuching connectivity
by Joanna Yap. Posted on February 12, 2011, Saturday

http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/7268/a00721.jpg
Group CEO convinced East Malaysia makes good hub, but only if low-cost terminals can be realised

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia has announced plans to reopen Kuching as a hub and to relaunch the Kuching-Perth routh.

Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes, Group CEO of AirAsia Berhad, told reporters that this move was part of their strategy to reestablish Kuching as a regional and international air travel hub and Miri as an alternative to Brunei to make domestic and regional travel more accessible and affordable.

Currently AirAsia, the region’s largest low cost carrier, does not have landing rights in Brunei. Presently, the only direct international flight destination from and to Kuching is Singapore.

He said the move followed the successful launch of its Miri-Singapore route.

Fernandes acknowledged that in the past Kota Kinabalu has received more development but AirAsia is keen to develop Kuching and Miri as well.

He said they were confident that the Kuching-Perth route would receive a good response from the Australian market.

Fernandes also told reporters that the key for developing Kuching as a air travel hub was to have a low-cost terminal as developing new traffic – such as between Kuching and Indonesia – would be crucial for success.

A large part of realising this potential would depend on keeping airport tax and charges low.

The market for air travel is still largely stimulated by lower fares.

Fernandes pointed out that AirAsia’s success in establishing the Miri-Singapore route would not have been possible if the airport tax in Miri had not been reduced to RM25 from RM51.

He also voiced his concern that recent efforts by certain parties to hinder the development of more low cost terminals would lead to East Malaysia not realising its potential to be regional travel hubs.

Group CEO convinced East Malaysia makes good hub, .....That is also a very huge hub ! My guess is the reporter has a somewhat poor understanding of the 'hub and spoke' concept, merely parrotting what she was fed

Miri as an alternative to Brunei to make domestic and regional travel more accessible and affordable .....Check out some of the fares offered by Royal Brunei from BWN for a good measure of what affordability means :)

Currently AirAsia, the region’s largest low cost carrier, does not have landing rights in BruneiYes you do ! Whether you choose to fly routes that have been granted to you or not, that is your perogative

Presently, the only direct international flight destination from and to Kuching is SingaporeAir Asia is not the only operator in/out of KCH !
MAS has services to SIN, HKG, ICN, HND
Batavia Air goes to Pontianak
Royal Brunei goes to BWN
Like I already said, it's AK's perogative

He also voiced his concern that recent efforts by certain parties to hinder the development of more low cost terminals would lead to East Malaysia not realising its potential to be regional travel hubsThis old 'scare' tactic is getting rather tedious already, though I must say has served you very well in the past :)

The market for air travel is still largely stimulated by lower fares.

Fernandes pointed out that AirAsia’s success in establishing the Miri-Singapore route would not have been possible if the airport tax in Miri had not been reduced to RM25 from RM51The inference is there that a person's decision on whether to travel or not may be swayed by difference of a mere RM26 :)
View that amount as proportion of total expenditure for a trip oversea !

Get free KL-Kuching seats with AirAsia
Posted on February 12, 2011, Saturday
http://www.theborneopost.com/?p=92980

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia Bhd (AirAsia) continues to strengthen its route connectivity into East Malaysia with a full-blown campaign offering free seats from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching apart from all-in-fares for travel to the rest of East Malaysia.

AirAsia is also increasing its weekly flight frequencies – connecting several cities such as Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Johor Bahru and Penang with East Malaysia with 319 weekly flights and over 56,000 seats.

AirAsia also has 101 weekly flights internally in East Malaysia connecting Kuching to Sibu, Miri and Bintulu with 35 weekly flights; and from Kota Kinabalu to Kuching, Miri, Sandakan and Tawau with 66 weekly flights.

“We have carried over 32 million guests from all over the world into East Malaysia, and a whopping 95 per cent of traffic is from Peninsular Malaysia and within East Malaysia,” the group’s chief executive officer, Dato Sri Tony Fernandes revealed in an interview with the media.

“This move to increase our frequencies into East Malaysia will further boost tourism activities into East Malaysia as well as the convenience factor for business travelers from both Peninsular and
East Malaysia.

“It would also give family members and loved ones more opportunities to visit
each other, and not to mention the amount of students who travel every semester break back to their hometowns,” he added.

“With these increased frequencies, both our Kuching and Kota Kinabalu hubs are bound to grow stronger.”

The free seats for return flights from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching and the promotional fares into East Malaysia are open for booking
from Feb 15 to 18, 2011, and guests are able to travel from Feb 17 to March 9, 2011 under this campaign.

Fares are from as low as RM12 for travel to the rest of East Malaysia while international sectors such as Kuching and Miri to Singapore, and Kota Kinabalu to Clark, Philippines are from as low as RM88 only.

Guests from East Malaysia can take advantage of the free seats and ultra low fares to connect to parts of China such as Guangzhou and Macau, as well as Pekanbaru, Banda Aceh and Surabaya in Indonesia with fares from as low as RM129 in this promotion.

2 pengalaman beli tiket kat dua syarikat nih...

ade skali aku beli tiket online kat office mas..ntah apehal ade problem..sorang staff dtg tanye aku mcm ade problem..so aku bgtau problem aku..dia bwk aku kat kaunter dan masih beri harga same mcm kat ticket online walaupun harga beli kat kaunter mmg fix.

yg satu lg lak, nak senyum pun susah..mencuka jea..on board pun mcm xreti nk senyum...

lain ngan mas..senyum jea..siap tanye slesa k x, nak ape2 k

Noks.. so far ikut pengalaman aku, Air Asia punya counter service lebih friendly dan cantik. MAS sucks. Ada yg dah gemuk, dah tua.. pastu muka masam mencuka jah.

Yg friendly tu, by chance jer ko boleh dpt utk MAS. Itu pun kalau nasib betul2 baik lah. :ohno::ohno:

Kuching Airport completed in May this year

KUCHING: A total of 3.5 per cent more work to upgrade the Kuching International Airport (KIA) are still not ready, said Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri.
He said the upgrading works involve the construction of only nine aircraft parking bays, three remote stand, three cargo stand, widening the runway, the addition of check-in counters, commercial lots, Mas Cargo Centre and the provision of the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA ).
"Only 3.5 per cent living alone that have not completed the majority of whom are involved work related to the modernization of the base of the Royal Malaysia Air Force (RMAF).
"The runway extension project and development related to the terminal building was completed and a lot of related work has been completed," he said in a press conference after his la-native to KIA yesterday.
He is also upgrading KIA, costing RM850 million would be completed in mid-May this year.

"The total cost is nearly RM850 million of which we can see that the construction cost alone is enough to reach RM794 million, and if it includes the cost of payments to consultants, Telekom Malaysia(TM), Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), it is estimated to cost up to RM850 million.

"We have given an extension until mid-May and the mean of about three months from now so we're sure the contractor is able to complete it on schedule," he saidHe added, to maintain quality of the upgrading works, the contractor has been subject to conditions to establish the warranty period of 10 years."Before this there was a complaint that there keretakan here (KIA), but the contractor and the consultant has taken the necessary steps."The contractors are also provided for setting up 10-year warranty and if something happened in that period, they (the contractor) will still be accountable," he said.

At the same time, he was told, with the completion of the upgrading works KIA later, he is expected to be able to accommodate up to six million passengers. At this time KIA been able to accommodate up to 3.5 million passengers. In addition, according to him, KIA is the third most important airport in the country after the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA)". With this development, many airline companies from abroad took the opportunity to bring foreign tourists to come to Sarawak, which is one of the most important tourist destinations in the country.

"With this position, he placed third KIA important in this country, where we found out that KIA also linked to several international destinations, especially in the territories of Japan," he said

He earlier told the press about 3,658,713 million passengers were recorded last year, an increase compared to 2009 with only 3,586,629 million. Also present at the press conference were Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Transport Aviation Division, Wan Said and Senior Manager KIA, Sunif Naiman.

* means total passengers for 2010 is 3.658 million..thats a good sign & i believe in 2011, KIA will be able to surpass 4million passengers

KCH is no longer no. 3 in Malaysia. PEN surpassed KCH in 2010. Here is the summary from MAHB's Annual Report 2010:

MAHB has released its much awaited Annual Report 2010 and here are some of the highlight statistics:

Overall

The ranking of Malaysia's busiest airport in 2010 by passengers traffic (for airports that handled more than 1 million passengers only) [except JHB which is privately owned]:

1. KUL - 34,087,636 (+14.8%)
2. BKI - 5,223,454 (+7.3%)
3. PEN - 4,166,969 (+25.3%)
4. KCH - 3,684,517 (+3.1%)
5. MYY - 1,694,915 (+4.6%)
6. LGK - 1,374,729 (+1.1%)
7. SZB - 1,118,309 (+36.4%)
8. KBR - 1,047,755 (+4.4%)
9. SBW - 1,009,002 (+7.4%)

- As we all know, KUL recorded its best ever passengers traffic in 2010 and is now in world ranking no. 32.
- BKI continues its run as Malaysia's 2nd busiest airport and surpassed the 5 million passengers mark for the first time in history.
- As reported before, PEN recorded a huge growth in 2010 which helped it to snatch back the title of Malaysia's 3rd busiest airport from KCH.
- The rivalry between PEN and KCH is nothing short of epic. PEN is/was Malaysia's 3rd busiest airport in 2010 and 2008, while KCH was Malaysia's 3rd busiest airport in 2009, 2007 and prior.
- The other airports that handled more than 1 million passengers from the 2009's list continue their growths despite at a rather small rate (1 - 4%).
- Two airports break into the 1 million club in 2010 - SZB (a reentry since its heyday before its closure as Malaysia's primary gateway) and SBW which enters the list for the first time in history.
- Together with JHB (which I suspect should be in ranking no. 5 between KCH and MYY), Malaysia now has 10 airports that handle more than 1 million passengers annually. Huge achievement!

However, there is no airport that is expected to join the 1 million club in 2011. The next airport in the ranking is TWU which only recorded a growth of 3.6% to 897,848 passengers in 2010.

KIA nation fourth's busiest airport

KUCHING: From January 15 March this year, 793,043 passengers had used the Kuching International Airport (KIA), according to Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahim Bakri yesterday.

“The number of passengers was 304,047 in January, 313,772 in February and 175,224 from 1- 15 March.

“For last year, the total number of passengers using KIA was 3.6 million, making it the fourth highest in the country after Kuala Lumpur International Airport (34,087,636), Kota Kinabalu International Airport (5,223,454) and Bayan Lepas International Airport at 4,166,969.” Rahim said KIA is now able to accommodate 5.3 million passengers per year following the upgrading of the airport. It covers a total area of 422.3 hectares and the length and breadth of the airstrip is at 3,780 metres and 46 metres respectively.

International airline companies using KIA include Royal Brunei, Silk Air, Tiger Airways, PT Kalster Aviation and local companies included Malaysia Airline Sistem (MAS), Air Asia, FireFly and MAS Wings.

“The redevelopment of KIA is almost completed. The progress is good for the state’s tourism industry and the economy. This is an important infrastructure to the people of Sarawak.

“The upgrading of Sibu Airport is also progressing well with 20 per cent to 30 per cent of the works completed. The government is looking on how to assist even more.

This shows the Barisan Nasional government fulfills its promises to the people of Sarawak,” he told reporters after a briefing by KIA senior officials at the VVIP section.

The Deputy Minister was on a working visit to the airport.

On complaints that KIA is now congested, Rahim replied that the previous planning did not take into account the presence of lowcost carriers like AirAsia which had brought in many passengers.

He said the government would find ways to overcome the problem by enlarging the passenger area, perhaps under the Second Rolling Plan with funds of less than RM20 million.

Rahim said that investigations into the skipping of an AirAsia aeroplane at the KIA runway some time ago was in the final stage. The runway had no problem, according to him, but bad weather could be one of the reasons.

Also present at the press conference were Sunif Naiman, Senior Manager of KIA and officials from the Department of Civil Aviation.

Btw, as for the KIA, I think AA is now using Gate 8 & 9 because there are not enough boarding gates to cater the low-cost carriers.[/QUO

How many times have u been in KKIA ? Don't be blinded by your semangat kenegerian..KKIA is 3 times bigger ..and remember in KK alone there are two airports..international and low cost airport ..cheers mate...

juz arrve in KKIA T1 using mrng flghts ysterday..notice the airport was so quiet with less people..at the screen appear that more AK than other airlines whch means most of these people are using the T2..well, i personally think tat KKIA T1 will be under utilize at least for anthr 5-8 yrs if Ak stil operating from T2..what a waste..

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuching International Airport (KIA) will offer connectivity to Jakarta through Kal Star Aviation, which made its maiden flight to KIA on Monday.

Utilising their newly furnished Boeing 737-300, with the capacity to carry 148 passengers, the airline has commenced daily flights for the Jakarta-Pontianak-Kuching route, a statement from Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) said.

Managing director of MAHB, Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad, said the service from Jakarta with a stopover at Pontianak, would benefit passengers from Sarawak in terms of choices.

“Malaysia Airports is actively collaborating with the government to ensure that we maximise the effectiveness of our marketing investment to attract new airlines and establish new routes,” he said. —Bernama

This operation takes the total number of airlines operating at KIA to nine currently including Malaysia Airlines. — Bernama

That's what I was saying but these people just can't swallow that. They should go to KKIA T1 themselves and count how many people mingling around the terminal. KKIA T2, yes, they're crowded... but it seems like KKIA T1 is really really under-utilized. I'm not being fanboyism of my own hometown airport, but I was just telling what I saw with my eyes. Considering the amount of money that has already been poured into the current expansion, you would hope it will be able to cater for anticipated growth requirements for much longer than 8 years :)
If the place looks and feels 'fully utilized' the moment it's completed, then the people tasked with design would have failed miserably so far as forward planning is concerned

Yup. Last week when I took a flight to Bintulu, I saw few AKs are queueing to occupy a bay. I think currently they're really utilizing all the bays, including the very last bay (Bay 8 or bay 9) which is mainly cater for A380.

One more thing, the smoking room has been closed for weeks now with no sign of opening it again. Now people just smoke freely inside the toilets in KIA and I think that might give bad impression to tourists. Even airports in Indonesia and China didn't allow ppl to smoke in the toilet, but it's now happening here, in Malaysia. :ohno::ohno:

Another thing, the airport is getting more and more crowded. At 'R' bay, the amount of chairs are no longer ample for the amount of passengers boarding there. Some ppl even need to sit on the floor or squat. It's not fair because ppl boarding at R bay are not boarding for low-cost airlines like AK or FY. Most of them board for Maswings or Batavia, which they pay for premium fees.

I think something should be done by MOT for KIA. It's no longer comfortable to use KIA nowadays. Better give that KKIA T1 to us.:lol: ~just kidding~

Sarawak to consider foreign airlines to boost tourism

http://www.theborneopost.com/2011/08/20/sarawak-to-consider-foreign-airlines-to-boost-tourism/

http://www.theborneopost.com/newsimages/A000221.jpg

STRATEGIC CONCERN: Khalid says air accessibility is very important for
Sarawak as the state is growing positively in the tourism industry.

KUCHING: Tourism players need to work closely with foreign airlines as the recent share swap between Malaysia Airlines Systems Bhd (MAS) and AirAsia Bhd (AirAsia) might have a negative impact on Sarawak.

“When airlines rationalise their fleet, frequencies, destinations within the country and abroad as well as down-size more often than not there is a negative impact on areas of coverage. The tie-up in this case will have a negative impact on the state,” STB chief executive officer Datuk Rashid Khan told reporters during the breaking of fast with tourism industry stakeholders and media representatives here at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching late Thursday evening.

According to Rashid, Sarawak was highly dependent on air accessibility being an island and it became a very strategic issue of concern especially when the state was growing positively in terms of visitor arrivals.

He said Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd (Malaysia Airports) which strategised at inviting foreign airlines to operate through incentive programmes such as three years free landing and parking was a good strategy that could be used to highlight to foreign airlines.

“The aviation policy worldwide is heading to more deregulation and liberalisation so somehow we have to ask ourselves why we are not moving in sync with that trend of liberalisation,” Rashid lamented.

Rashid suggested that the upcoming World Routes meeting in Berlin would be a good opportunity to offer incentives and coordinate slots for the airlines that would be attending.

“So we would like to go there and talk to many airlines and convince the airlines especially around the region as the economies of South East Asia are stable,” Rashid said.

Based on the World Travel Organisation estimates, by 2020 about 100 million Chinese tourists would travel abroad.

“We need to do a lot of marketing and engagement with the airlines to showcase what we have to offer. For an airline, its assets are movable. If it operates without being profitable there is no future, it will just pull out and park its assets elsewhere, unlike a convention centre which cannot be moved,” he added.

Speaking about the airport tax, Rashid said that it would only create a marginal impact to the tourism industry in Sarawak because airport tax is normally paid by customers and not the airlines.

“Even in the low cost environment, prices are lower particularly in the medium and long haul routes, when visitors come to this part of the world, airport tax is just a very small percentage of their total expenditure,” Rashid said.

Comparing airport taxes around the region, Rashid said that the tax in the country was comparatively very low.

I personally never understood the idea firefly being a 3rd player in the domestic routes.Flying the turboprops within the peninsular and a few popular tourist destination islands in the south east asia seem like a great idea at first providing the fares a just a little bit cheaper compared to MAS or AA.

I think since the day they swap shares, Tony might had suggested to MAS to withdraw plans to develop Firefly in Sabah & Sarawak. I also don't understand, we don't need Firefly actually, it may bring good business and more competition, but it's not that good for aviation business to have too many players plying for the same route. I believe we have the traffic, but we just don't need too many players. I'd prefer less players with more frequencies than more players with less frequencies.

MAS Offers 14 Extra/Upgraded Flights For Chinese New Year Season

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is ready to mount an additional 14 flights, including two upgraded ones, to various domestic destinations in conjunction with the forthcoming Chinese New Year holidays.

In a statement today, MAS said seats on these additional flights will be for sale from Jan 20 to 28, 2012.

"This is over and above the 32 extra flights from Jan 17, 2012 to Feb 1, 2012 announced last week," it noted.

The full-service premium carrier said it saw the need to boost its offering due to the increasing demand from the market for the holiday season.

Twelve of the additional flights will use the 144-seater Boeing 737-400 aircraft for the Kuala Lumpur-Kuching route (2 flights); Kuching-Kuala Lumpur (2 flights); Kuala Lumpur-Tawau (3 flights); Tawau-Kuala Lumpur (3 flights); Kuala Lumpur-Langkawi (1 flight); and Langkawi-Kuala Lumpur (1 flight).

Two of the flights will be upgraded, from the 144-seater Boeing 737-400 aircraft to the 294-seater Airbus A330 aircraft, providing an extra 150 seats on each flight, it said.

The upgraded flights are for Kuala Lumpur-Kuching and Kuching-Kuala Lumpur, and the fares are also highly competitive, it said.

Customers can fly economy class from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi, Kuching and Tawau at one-way fares starting from RM199, RM379 and RM149 respectively.

"They will also get a taste of true Malaysian hospitality and full service benefits like free baggage allowance of 20kg and 30kg per person for economy and business class travel respectively," the airline said.

As done previously, MAS said it would continue to monitor the situation and add more capacity on sectors where there is further demand.

Customers can call Malaysia Airlines' toll-free number 1-300-88-3000 or log on to www.malaysiaairlines.com for bookings and best deals for travel on the above sectors. Customers can also book via MH Buddy on http://facebook.com/malaysiaairlines.
