Cochin Shipyard's Development Hopes Towards Vizhinjam

* Shipyard's 2nd Unit
* 1000 crores project
* 1000 direct and 5000 indirect job opportunity
* very well connected with air, road and rail
* because of the natural depth the shipyard can save huge money in digging mud
* requested 150-200 acres of land to govt. to handover for the project

This report states that expression of interest was given eight months back, the govt is yet to respond. Tvm cannot afford to lose this project, because once the govt goes for global tendering, the fate would be the same. Many players may give tender, but with the only intention to scuttle the whole process. Either govt should go with its own funds, or do a JV with parties like cochin port trust.

^^ - Interesting update there, Nishanth. Heera's plans in Trivandrum seem to get bigger and bigger by the day. In fact, if any builder from Kerala can make it into the big league, it will most certainly be Heera.

I am most looking forward to hear about their mall project though!

An interesting competition is brewing between India and other countries such as Russia, Israel, South Africa, China and the Philippines.

Locations such as Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram are giving stiff competition to Moscow, Shanghai, Johannesburg and St. Petersburg for attracting niche KPO work.
Bangalore is jostling with Moscow and St. Petersburg for research and development; Chennai is competing with Gaunghzao, China for attracting engineering services; Mumbai is vying for financial analytics work with Singapore, Dublin and Toronto and Thiruvananthapuram is locked in a fierce competition with Shanghai and Beijing for attracting animation and game development work.

KPO typically involves high-value work performed by highly skilled professionals who have specialised knowledge and skills. While the BPO industry efficiently handles a hugevolume of back-office processes, the KPO industry handles more of the high skilled work that requires analytics expertise and experience.

The last few lines highlights why Trivandrum is a hot spot for high end product and application development and KPO instead of generic BPO as many other Tier 2 cities have become. Hope the powers-that-be take cognizance of this piece of information. :)

Good points.. Current advantage we have in India is the huge availability of skilled English speaking people. With the increasing salary we are not in a position to offer price advantage. Except Israel all other countries are cheaper than India. But the good thing there is huge demand in the Indian Domestic market itself...
From the R&D and high end product category we are still far behind US, Israel or other Western countries . We are yet to see a world class product of the likes Microsoft, IBM , Google, CISCO , apple level...

Considering the height of the people and comparing the same with the width,
it seems that there will be enough space for a 4 lane road with a small median.

What is the difference between intermediate road and 4 lane?
I always thought palayam underpass was 4 lane. Doesn't it have a median and 4 lanes marked?
But 11 meters seems a bit less for 4 lanes. I have read in the past that standard lane is 3 meters.. Not very sure though..
may be they will mark 4 lanes (2.5m each or so) but not enough for 2 heavy vehicles to go side by side one way..

Scorpio, do u know the location of the city plaza and varkey mall that has been mentioned by ajay in the post whose link u pasted above?? And looking at the present situation, i think Nikunjam City Square and Trinity mall are going to be the first malls in tvm unless they are occupied by Kalyan and Jayalekshmi silks respectively...And in 2 years time, the BIG infra mall near technopark will be ready for sure...:)

Vjfile,

Nikunjam City Square will not be a "Mall" in the strict sense of the word. But its going to be a Multibrand outlet of a single/associated product line operated by a single operator (all of the 1,50,000 sqft). Add ons like food courts etc could be there!

Opening targeted for Jan 2011!

Best Regards

Kovalam to be premier surfing destination

Source: http://www.hindu.com/2010/05/19/stories/2010051956030700.htm
Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will commission an artificial reef today.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Tourists can look forward to a host of water sports such as surfing, wave riding, scuba diving, snorkelling, boating and water skiing in Kovalam with the commissioning of a multipurpose artificial soft reef off the beach resort on Wednesday.

The reef, installed between the Light House and the Edakkal rocks off the Light House beach, will protect the severely eroding coast and make the resort a round-the-year surfing destination.

Billion-dollar industry

Surfing and wave riding are now a multi-billion dollar industry worldwide and Kerala Tourism is to immensely benefit from this.

The soft reef will help attract tourists to Kovalam throughout the year. The resort is active only for the first six months of the year now and during the remaining half, with the monsoon, the beaches face severe erosion.

The project, funded under the Centre's tsunami rehabilitation programme, was executed by the New-Zealand-based Artificial Surfing Reef Ltd. “We had commenced the work in mid-December last and completed it by February 19. The reef is ready for commissioning,” an official said.

The Harbour Engineering Department has set up the reef for Kerala Tourism to change the nature of waves within 500 metres off the coast from the Light House beach.

The reef is to stabilise the beaches and make them wider in due course by eliminating the wave power offshore. Besides, the tourists reaching here can look forward to sheltered swimming.

The CESS is doing a shoreline study and the CMFRI a study on the marine ecosystem after the reef had been placed in Kovalam, an official said. As the reef is off-shore and submerged, there is no visual impact.

Giant geo-textile bags with a life of over 40 years and filled with sand are the building blocks of the reef. The crest of the 500-metre-long reef has been placed just below the low tide line. It has been placed at a depth of 3 metres to 7 metres so that the reef will block breakers more than one-metre high, leaving only small waves to wash up the shore.

A State-level committee had increased the cost of the work from the initial Rs.4.05 crore to Rs.7.8 crore since the volume of the reef had increased.

Protection for coast

According to the official, the increase in the cost is due to the emphasis given to the protection of the coast and to ensure the continuation of fishing activities. The project also got delayed due to opposition from the local people.

Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will commission the reef and the walkway on Wednesday in the presence of Fisheries Minister S. Sarma and Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran. Cheers!!!

Kiddu, I am surprised that you have missed the dozens of discussions that we have had on this topic. Just to clarify once again, the M.G. Road between LMS and Attakulangara will be 6-lane with foot paths and a central media with high-intensity sodium vapor lighting. This is already in place between LMS and VJT Hall junctions and the rest will be installed in the next 2 months or so.

^^ - I saw a recent advt. from Parthas to recruit a large number of staff for its showroom. I also understand that they are planning a 200,000 sq.ft. mall-format showroom at Pattom which will eventually become the primary outlet while the current one caters to whole-sale and budget shopping.

After Emirates Airlines, Saudi Arabian Airlines is introducing a weekly freighter aircraft service to Thiruvananthapuram from Thursday onwards. The Dubai-based Emirates Airlines had introduced weekly cargo services in the Dubai - Thiruvananthapuram - Hong Kong sector from April 27. Emirates is operating a Boeing 777 wide-bodied aircraft.According to sources, Saudi Airlines would be operating a Boeing 747 jumbo aircraft in the Dammam - Thiruvananthapuram - Hong Kong sector. The introduction of jumbo freighter services would give a fillip to the imports and exports from the State capital, as well as the neighbouring districts in Tamil Nadu. 3.4 cr. FDI to KIMS also (http://www.manoramaonline.com/cgi-bin/MMOnline.dll/portal/ep/malayalamContentView.do?contentType=EDITORIAL&programId=1073753761&articleType=Malayalam%20News&contentId=7254997&BV_ID=@@@)

i was just wondering if the figure of Rs 3.4 crores mentioned as FDI permission for KIMS is the correct figure. The amount seems too paltry to be considered as an FDI . The figure of Rs 400 crores for Asianet looks more reasonable

Dying pond set to breathe easy
Source: http://www.hindu.com/2010/05/23/stories/2010052351320200.htm

‘Chilanthi Vala,' a freshwater pond near Karamana, is to be de-silted, cleared of garbarge.

Thiruvananthapuram: A heavily polluted and dying fresh water pond in the city is all set to get a fresh lease of life. V. Sivankutty, MLA, on Saturday said the Municipal authorities will restore the famed ‘Chilanthi Vala' (spider web) pond at Ilankam near Karamana to its past purity. The ecologically important pond is currently sodden with urban refuse, chiefly plastic covers and bottles. Storm water drains emptying into the pond are the chief source of the city waste. Certain local traders and residents are also in the habit of using the pond as a convenient garbage dump.

Drains to be plugged

The authorities said storm water drains emptying into the pond will be plugged and diverted. The pond will be drained, de-silted and cleared of garbage and weeds. Its embankments will be fortified, banks beautified and greened. Local traders and residents will be sensitised about the need to keep the pond trash-free. The pond is of considerable ecological importance in the locality. It was earlier a favourite haunt of water birds. The pond also aided replenishment of groundwater table in the area.

This move by the authorities is laudable since it will not only reduce the pollution and mosquito menace and also pave the way for water harvesting which can reduce the water problems during lean seasons.
They can also plan to develop good parks around it. If area permitting small water sports can also be arranged.

I am not yet sure where the this ilankam near karamana is.
What will be the area of the pond? If someone can take a photo and post it that will be great.
Thnks in advance for the info.
cheers!!!

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The German made road sweeping machine, idling at the backyard of the Corporation office, can now call it a day. In its place has arrived a bigger vehicle that can sweep, dust and keep even the footpaths and dividers clean, costing a whopping Rs 70 lakh.

The new arrival flaunted its services along the Vellayambalam-Kowdiar road on Friday morning, which left many a passersby awestruck. The new machine resembles the garbage collecting vehicle that arrived last month. Just that, this one has two huge broom like structure at the bottom, which can even wet dry the roads. The vehicle has been bought under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) by the City Corporation and has been brought all the way from Coimbatore.

Roots, a Coimbatore based company, has supplied the vehicle to the Corporation. Under the agreement signed between the two, the vehicle will be operated, managed and maintained by the company. According to Health Committee officials, the vehicle can be used to remove all kinds of garbage on the roads; the sand deposit by the corners of the dividers or the broken glass pieces left unpicked on the footpaths. Till its body portion gets filled with dust and sand, the vehicle can be used at a stretch, with no hassle of opening and emptying it now and then.

As of now, the vehicle would be seen at work only on the wellkept roads, like the Vellayambalam Kowdiar, Vellayambalam East Fort, Vazhuthacaud, Palayam Airport, Palayam Ulloor stretches, where the road development work by Road Fund Board or TRIDCL has been completed.

With the coming of the new facility, the contingent employees deployed to sweep the roads in these places would probably get a reprieve. The vehicle might start its duty from June 1.

WiMAX service from BSNL went live in Trivandrum. WiMAX is a method by which you can connect to internet without wire, but the mobility is limited. It is a better option if you are going to use it as an alternative to wired broadband connection as the rates are cheaper for WiMAX than the wired counterparts. It’s the best option if you live in a rented apartment and can’t get wired connections. WiMAX from BSNL doesn’t require a landline connection.

Good to see this project gaining momentum. Probably one of the busiest and congested stretches of Highway in the state.

btw the initial plan was to develop the highway to a 30.2 m wide 6 lane highway as per this Hindu report 3 months back (http://www.thehindu.com/2010/02/07/stories/2010020758230300.htm). I hope the initial plan stays and the road will have a full 6 lane carriageway when completed.

The final alignment for widening the Karamana-Kaliyikkavila road into six lanes is ready.

The proposal is to widen the 29.2-km road, one of the congested stretches of National Highway no. 47 passing through the district, with a 30.2-metre carriageway at an estimated cost of Rs.690 crore.

Instead of the standard 4.2-metre median, the widened stretch will have a 1.2-metre median. Sixteen intersections are there on the stretch. Traffic signals will have to be installed at these busy junctions.

If need to get the full usage of the width whether 4 or 6 lane, the vehicle parking should be restricted along these roads. It is worse in Pattom-Kesavadasapuram(4 lane),Neeramankara-Killipalam(4 lane) & Overbridge-East Fort(6 lane). Now it may in Vellayambalam-Sasthamangalam also:(.If not the parking shall be allowed in "Parallel Parking" rather than "Inclined Parking"..:)

In order to realize the full potentiality of the wider roads, they should try to build parking towers so that parking on road side can be avoided. Such a step in addition to making the traffic smooth and minimising accidents will also be a source of good revenue generation and provide additional employment.

A few months back, the corporation authorities were talking about building such parking facilities in the MG road and other important places. Any new updates?

Cheers!!!

Ajith, when I posted my comment, I was not aware of your postings (as evidenced by the few minutes gap)
Any way It shows that we both were in the same wavelength as regards the traffic problems after seeing a number of cars taking a lot of space in the sides of the road affecting smooth flow of traffic.
Of course, I appreciate that yours is good temporary solution.
But in my opinion the issue with parallel parking is that many do not do it well and go for it only if there is two car space to give enough room for manuevering while getting the car parked properly.

Cheers!!!

Hi friend,
Can you please tell me from where you have got this information? :)

Kiddu, most of the news sources have been presented here in this forum in the previous pages. Many of the guys here are professionals in the industry and thus they get access to first-hand reliable information, don't worry ;)

Kalyan Sarees had a half page ad in many leading dailies announcing their arrival to Trivandrum. Vinod has posted the image of the glitzy 6-floored showroom in the previous page. It belonged to Jos Alukkas but now Kalyan Sarees have taken it on lease.

Jos Alukkas, meanwhile, have bought land for their wedding center in Pattom.

Joy Alukkas Wedding Center will be another massive project on MG Road. They have acres of land behind the existing jewellery showroom and I heard design works are on for the 4-storied wedding center which will have entrances from MG Road as well as Attakulangara Bypass.

Kalyan Silks have put up their plans on their website; http://www.kalyansilks.com/php/viewContent.php?id=8 They're looking for prime parcels of land or space for their own showroom.

Our new outlets are ably supported by our wholesale division – Kalyan Collections – the biggest wholesale division in South India.Kalyan Silks is planning to start new outlets in Kannur, Kottayam, Trivandrum and the Middle East.

Jayalekshmi did announce their interest in Trivandrum many months ago through various media. Good to know that they've zeroed in on their space.

Not sure about where and when Emmanuel Silks is opening, may be Shafi will enlighten us on this ;)

Parthas have an acre or so land near LIC, Pattom. They were planning an IT Park initially but now preliminary works are ongoing for a massive retail outlet as well as expansion of their existing showroom on Powerhouse Road.

Nalli Silks (Chennai) did visit some spaces including SreeDhanya Apex at Vellayambalam- Sasthamangalam Road, so we know that they have Trivandrum on their radar. :)

Happy to hear Chennai Silks and Sree Vijayalakshmi Silks are also on way into the city. Jeeeeez, thats what I call a beeline...

Bhima has major expansion plans as well. Their new 10 storied complex is coming up beside Plamoodu bridge, on the plot in front of the new 6 storied Tara Sanitary Wares building.

Not only the silk and gold houses, noted footwear and accessories stores are also heading to the city. I saw Sylcon banner on Felicity Square, MG Road where they'll be taking over two full floors. Heard that METRO is also looking for space in the city.

Wish KSRTC changes the painting scheme on their buses too to match with modernity. Looks too outdated and have been seeing the same ever since I could remember. No body in that organization who is a bit aesthetically talented ?
Dr.Vinod.

KSRTC had got a whiff of fresh air when Ganesh Kumar became the minister. The fast passengers and super fasts got new shape, with tinted glass windows, and newer modern shape. Body building was done outside, I think in Karnataka.

After some time, as usual there were negative remarks from many, mainly from the left trade unions itself that these buses are 'not suited' to Kerala conditions and they had their natural death.

Now KSRTC is back to their decades old 'dabba' design, with open windows.

When can we expect the road widening works from LMS to Overbridge to be completed? AS Kannan has rightly pointed out , our honorary photojournalists are doing a wonderful job in keeping us abreast of the progress of the project. Eventhough we stay away from our city, we seem to know much more about what is going on there than our friends and relatives who stay in Trivandrum. The local media dish out only political trash and indulge in sensationalising trivial rubbish
Thanks to SSC and a group of our selfless friends , we feel that we are not away from our home town.

I don't think the building will be demolished. The HC had ordered that the building could not be disturbed as it had got all due permissions from the Corporation. An alternate proposal had been agreed to rehabilitate the displaced traders from Thakaraparambu which is getting implemented, albeit slowly.

Everywhere we are seeing this ‘peculiar Kerala condition’ which doesn’t hold much good value. It is nothing more than the ‘resistance to change’ and of course, a means to save cost.

Nobody is asking you to completely close the windows. In fact those glasses which helps to you cover half of the open window thereby helping you to guide the flow of air. What we have is cloth shutters or tarpaulin sheets which is not at all a ‘modern/first world’ thing.

I have been travelling in buses regularly before 2000 during my student days. You would be tired after sitting at the side seat with heavy wind along with dust & sun blasting at your face. Once in the night I happened to be in the side seat on my journey from Kollam to Trivandrum and I got cold and throat pain because of the cold wind which was blasting at my face.

We also see many people closing the shutters of fast passengers/super fasts on the side which gets direct sun even during day. Night also they do it. It becomes difficult to locate where the bus has reached. The problem surmounts when it is raining and it is night.

You take any other place with similar climatic conditions. Mumbai is humid, just like Kerala. Goa also. Most parts of Tamil Nadu too is humid, hot too. The buses there have glass windows too. In other countries/cities of South East Asia like Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur with similar weather conditions you find similar non a/c buses.

Why the need to go to other states of countries? Look at our non a/c ‘tourist’ buses. Are they having sliding glass windows or cloth/tarpaulin shutters? Even though being ‘Contract’ carriages, these buses do ‘route’ services between cities within Kerala and outside. Anybody complaining that they feel like inside incinerators?

Now we see Expresses of KSRTC (body built by them) with glass windows, whereas Super Fasts/Fast Passengers are without them. So what does it convey? I do not think there is much difference between the nature of the ‘run’ of the service barring a few more stops and lesser fare in the case of latter. Don’t the passengers inside an Express bus feel uncomfortable, being glass windows? This makes it clear that the concern is mainly of cost involved.

The crux of the issue is that the buses should be maintained well. What happens in the case of our KSRTC is that eventually all those glass windows become stuck due to the lack of maintenance/cleaning and it becomes difficult to open or close it fully.

Kerala is ahead of many other states in general lifestyle, automobiles, houses etc and I feel in the case of ‘quality’ buses, we score very low.

(Further discussions can be had in ‘Discussions Thread’ and not here)

If I remember correctly, it was a young team of final year sudents from the KSRTC managed Sree Chithra Engineering college who did the design and the minister himself had given away a commendation as well as a cash reward for the effort put in. Scorpio Bhai, isnt this (the pic shown below), the building of tara sanitary wares?? This one is bang on middle of the PTC petrol pump and the existing small tara sanitary wares showroom at pattom, opp SBI treasury branch. It also has a board in front of it displaying the name of Tara Sanitary Wares. By the way,I had also seen a 6 storied building coming up in the small road along the plamood bridge, which seems to be the one you are indicating. That one's not on the main roadside, but arnd 30 m inside the side road. If that is the Tara sanitary wares showroom, then which is this one?? A bit confused...:)

^^ I'm not sure who is going to occupy this building beside the Petrol Pump you've posted above. The 6 storied structure we see just after the Plamoodu bridge (on the right side of the highway on way to Pattom) will indeed be occupied by Tara Sanitary Wares. I don't know if they'll be retaining the space in Pattom once this showroom opens. The small road by the side of the new structure leads to Marappalam. :)

Yeah, and Bhima retail complex will be rising in front of the same building on the shores of the canal.

A proposal for making Trivandrum Volvo service more effective. Now the volvo buses are plying in all the corners of the city and is a huge loss for KSRTC. The bandwidth of the buses are low, people are not waiting for the buses. The proposal here is introduce one main route for all the buses currently now in Trivandrum city. The route can be from Central Bus Station Thampanoor, because lots of people are coming the CBS Thampanoor via Bus, Train etc. So the route can start from there. The route is "Thampanoor - Attakulangar (by pass) - East Fort - Statue - Palayam - Pattom - Medical College- Ulloor - Karyavattom - Technopark Back gate - Technopark Front Gate - Kazhakkuttam" and return via the same route. So what i am suggesting here is for the 9 buses currently running in our city Trivandrum can concentrate in this route. So that every 6 minutes a volvo service can be started from central bus station to kazhakkootta via the above route. So more people will be attracted to this service. Once the route is saturated introduce new volvo buses and new routes. Its very sorry to hear that the volvo buses are making huge loss to our KSRTC, in the Capital City of Kerala.

All we need is a higher frequency. Connecting Kaniyapuram to Kovalam is not bad at all -the only service that does it. I have used this service, and have noticed several North Indian Tourists in the bus. May be a diversion between Overbridge and East Fort via Trivandrum Central will make this route more attractive to people wanting to take the train.

2 weeks back i had written about this to the email id given at the kstrc website with a request to acknowledge(still waiting). Many a times the bus becomes so crowded when they get to KU campus one has to stand leaning to the exit door. On top of that some conductors(one) wont even issue tickets in this rush, just collect the cash and let you get down once it reaches park buildings as there would be a rush to get out. Once the schedule wasnt even operated and many (including me) had to take an auto to KU busstop after waiting for half an hour for the 7.15pm bus. I guess they need to at least put in a feedback box in that bus if they dont look into the mailbox.

The Volvo services in Trivandrum are running at close to their break-even point, indeed may have already crossed it, as per data received through an RTI filed by TDF. It's a malicious attempt by certain vested interests to project the services as running at a loss, especially in view of the fact that the buses in Trivandrum cost 60% less in Trivandrum as elsewhere due to higher levels of JNNURM funding support.

Nothing new regarding Volvos, these are premium, sophisticated and costly buses. Even in Bangalore where they are in good numbers (500+) and has good patronage, it is still in ‘operational losses’. But yes Volvos get other non operating revenues like ‘full body wrap’ advertisements which negate the losses.

And remember that this is a ‘projects thread’, so please carry out all such discussions in the ‘Discussions’ Thread.

Super specialty OP clinics at new block from July 1

Source: thehinduonline

MCH block constructed with PMSSY aid

Thiruvananthapuram: The new super specialty (SS) block of Medical College Hospital, constructed as part of the Rs.120-crore Prime Minister's Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), will formally start outpatient clinics of six super specialty streams on July 1.

The SS block, one of the major highlights of the PMSSY scheme and constructed by HLL Lifecare Ltd. , is expected to be dedicated to the nation by the Prime Minister by July end or the first week of August, Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy said at a press conference here on Friday.

The 253-bed SS block, spread over 1,60,000 sq.ft on seven floors, houses the outpatient clinics and inpatient wards of the six super specialties, eight operation theatres, 29-bed six intensive care units, haemo dialysis unit and renal transplant unit, apart from administrative blocks.

The block is fully equipped with sophisticated equipment, furniture, 24-hour generator back-up and has all modern facilities which makes it the first ever public sector hospital on a par with any expensive private sector hospital.

Ms. Sreemathy said with the commissioning of the new block, a new hospital culture was being ushered in with the accent on offering proper tertiary care and the entry of visitors would be strictly restricted.

In a major development, the HLL will be setting up a margin-free outlet for the sale of implants (orthopaedic, heart valves etc), expensive surgical consumables and expensive drugs, exclusively for the medical college.

“We will soon be signing an MoU with the HLL in this regard. In one stroke, this will put an end to the racketeering by middlemen and agents inside the medical college. The patient or his relative will not need to directly purchase any implant or drug from outside the hospital because henceforth, it will be the responsibility of the hospital to provide total care to the patient,” Ms. Sreemathy said.

Ms. Sreemathy said that for the SS block, the government was creating 145 new posts, including 86 nurses, six head nurses and 20 nursing assistants.

Chairman and Managing Director of the HLL M. Ayyappan, Principal Ramdas Pisharody and senior MCH officials were present at the press conference Cheers!!!

Already several time this discussions have made here.Anyway,This Karamana-Kaliyikkavila stretch is the existing NH-47 which is purely maintained by the NH Division of Kerala PWD.The 45m issue was for the widening of NH-47 upto Kazhakoottam and the existing Bypass upto Kovalam and its extension upto Kerala/TN Border which is to be developed by NHAI under NHDP Phase III A.

Here we go, another IT giant to Trivandrum....

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: HCL Infosystems will set up its first unit in Kerala at the Technopark campus here.

Technopark Chief Executive Mervin Alexander told reporters here Saturday that HCL will set up a R&D unit on a two-acre plot in the Technopark campus.

The third phase of the Technopark, dedicated to IT ventures, is coming up in an area of 92 acres, of which 22 acres would be given out to those who need their own campuses.

"IBM officials have also had a few round of talks with us and we expect that they too would be setting up shop here," said Alexander.

IT majors Infosys and Wipro have already set up their offices in the state.

Lol, I bet Nonorama would burn midnight oil tonight, trying to find a way to put a spin on this one!

No wonder our respected IT Secretary was quoted a few weeks ago bemoaning the fact that most companies are interested only in one place in Kerala, a fact that most other people realized a long time ago, sans Nonorama of course!

Kerala to set up biggest IT project
Source: http://www.deccanherald.com/content/...t-project.html

Technocity, Kerala’s biggest IT project, will be launched by Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan on June 4. Proposed as an integrated township, Technocity will come up on 451 acre along the NH 47 to Kollam at Pallippuram, 5 kms north of the Technopark campus here.

The project will encompass not only IT/ ITES infrastructure, but will also have residential apartments, shopping malls, hospitals, hotels, educational institutions and other facilities. It will be developed in a phased manner over a period of seven years of which the first major phase will be completed in three years.

Technopark CEO Mervin Alexander said that the focus areas at Technocity would be biotechnology, nanotechnology, high-end manufacturing and R & D. The project would provide one lakh IT/ ITES jobs directly.

According to him, the project would be developed through multiple special purpose vehicles in association with leading developers. Land acquisition for the project has already been completed. Principal Secretary- IT Ajay Kumar said that the project would create around 10 to 15 million square ft of IT business space. The Japan International Cooperation Agency has been approached for a Rs 170-crore funding for the infrastructure development of Technocity.

Cheers!!!

Rain takes up inauguratuion of Bakery Fly over
Source: http://www.trivandrumbuzz.com/rain-takes-up-inauguratuion-of-bakery-fly-over-trivandrum/

Built on 13 concrete piers, the 510-metre-long flyover has an 11-metre-wide carriageway with concrete crash barriers on both sides. The 14-span bridge will be exclusively for vehicles and out of bounds for pedestrians. The flyover across Bakery Junction, a major component of the City Roads Improvement Project (CRIP), was scheduled to be completed by the end of the month.Work on the approach roads at both ends is progressing and clearing the way for the finishing touches. This Fly over was built as a link to the underpass at Palayam, it provides a route across MG Road for vehicles coming from the airport via Chacka, Pettah, Palayam towards Thampanoor.

Work on the flyover that began in August 2005 came to halt in 2006 after the implementing agency threatened to pull out citing delay in land acquisition.Though the contract was renewed, the construction work was held up several times by the delay in land acquisition, procedural problems and the dispute between the government and the contractors. The construction of the flyover also saw the State Public Works Department portfolio changing hands five times, from M.K. Muneer to P.J. Joseph, T.U. Kuruvila, Mons Joseph and back to P.J. Joseph. Except a small area to be used as a parking bay by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the area beneath the flyover will be landscaped with plants and lawns to prevent encroachments.

The Fly over at Bakery is done by the Thiruvananthapuram City Road Improvement Project. The project involves widening, strengthening and improvement of the selected road and street furniture, as listed below:• Widening of 12 corridors having a length of 42km with 4.94km 2 lane, 13.14km 3 lane, 17.15km 4 lane and 6.83km 6 lanes.• Geometric improvement• Strengthening of the road surface• Improvement of 65 junctions• Flyovers at Bakery Junction and Thakaraparambu• Underpass at Palayam junction• Improvement/ replacement/ construction of existing culverts and minor bridges• 2 metre wide paved footpaths, signalized pedestrian crossings and other pedestrian facilities • Road signs and markings, modern solar based traffic signals, high mast lighting and destination boards• Provision of storm water drains, new street lights and tree planting• Provision of 94 dedicated bus bays, offsetting from the main carriageway• Reorganizing of the existing utilities (telephone lines, electrical lines etc.) so as to avoid future road cutting.

The project is part of the Rs.220-crore City Roads Improvement Scheme which includes the construction of two flyovers at Bakery Junction and Thakarapparambu and an underpass at Palayam. The three-lane bi-directional flyover at Bakery Junction is aimed at easing the heavy traffic volume at the intersection which often results in an extended gridlock along the connecting roads from Punnen Road, Vazhuthacaud, Thampanoor and Palayam. According to the project survey, the 465-metre-long flyover will bring down the traffic volume at the junction by 26 to 37 per cent. The current volume is estimated at 7,000 PCU (passenger car units).

Deceiving deadlines is not new to the Bakery Junction flyover. Deadlines for completing the work of this flyover had been changed many a time owing to reasons ranging from land acquisition to non-availability of quality labourers. Now, on the brink of the inauguration, a surprise villain has emerged to defy the final deadline. The incessant summer rain in the capital is all set to delay the opening of the flyover scheduled for May 31.Officials of the Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Limited (TRDCL), the private consortium executing the work of the 520-m flyover, said the rain, which came much ahead of the monsoon, had disrupted their plans to carry out tarring at the flyover and the work of the approach road at the Panchapura Junction. “It would take only three days to complete the tarring and related works. But there must not be any rain for 24 hours to make it possible. Also, we can’t take up the levelling and land-filling works at the Panchapura Junction in this weather,” TRDCL vice-president Anil Kumar Pandala said . There was rain which was disrupting the work. The Meteorological Department has predicted rain in the coming days too. If that happens, the plans of the TRDCL to work overtime to make up for the lost time will be spoilt. The only chance to complete the work on time is rain taking a break for three or four days from Thursday. After that, monsoon will hit the State.

I think that there is some supernatural power like that of an alien or bhoot with the Fly over which keeps the dream of traveling on the Flyover as just that..a dream. Cheers!!!

The state Govt must show resolve to implement Expressway project

Source: thehinduonline

project hits bumps

Problems in finding land for the road

Project is part of a national network

It will pass through the coastal region

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The uncertainty over finalising the width of the national highway stretches and the alleged resistance against land acquisition are likely to affect the development of the proposed Indian National Expressway Network in the State.

A 400-km reach between Kanyakumari and Thrissur has been included in the network which aims at achieving a target of 15,600 km by 2022, the end of the 13 {+t} {+h} Plan period. The expressway would pass through the coastal region of the State which offloads the traffic on the NH-47 connecting Kanyakumari, Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Thrissur.

It is expected to offer a greater scope for weaning away some traffic from other competing modes with the possibility of the average trip length being doubled in due course of time.

It is expected to complement the existing arterial network of the State in terms of connectivity and performance.

90-metre width

Last week the State government received a confirmation letter from the Centre in response to its request for including Kerala in the network. The width of the proposed expressway is 90 metres and is unlikely to be scaled down under coercion. Which means, the State government will have to play a pivotal role in acquiring land for implementing the project without any hitch.

Official sources told The Hindu that the alignment of the new road network, which has been included in the first phase of the development schedule, will be finalised only in due course.

Creation of a National Expressway Authority of India has been proposed for expediting land acquisition and rehabilitating the families that are likely to be displaced. The central authority will have State-level liaison units. The Union government has specified that the State's views be considered while finalising the routes. The authority should also sensitise the State government on land acquisitions.

Though the Centre has taken such precautions in advance for averting a row over the project, the lingering differences of opinion over finalising the width of the national highway stretches and the objections against land acquisition for developing the 45-metre wide road network are feared to hamper the prospects of the expressway. Unless the government shows the resolve to sort out the existing issues and create a public awareness about the need for developing a new road network, the chances of implementing the project are bleak, sources said.
Cheers!!!

A 91-foot high full-bloom lotus in pristine white marble, symbolising universal peace, spirituality and fraternity, is being built near Santhigiri Ashram at Pothonkode in Thiruvananthapuram.

The project is estimated to cost Rs 30 crore. Landscaping, library, lecture hall and other infrastructure would cost another Rs 20 crore.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Very beautiful. I read the article fully, but could not understand whether it is a solid lotus or contains any other facility like prayer hall, auditorium etc. (90ft ht and 80 ft dia iis a massive structure.
It will be a very good tourist attraction for Tvm visitors.

CHeers!!!

This is indeed a beutiful structure and will become a landmark in TVM

I wonder if Rajiv Anchal (the Film Director) had anything to do with its conception. He has come up with some massive sculptures in the past (before his film ventures) and he is currently known to be associated with the Shanthigiri Ashram.

The pangs of development have been succinctly dealt by columnist T V R Shenoy, who hails from Kerala, in a recent write-up on the antediluvian stand of Kerala politicians.

“It is a bit of a comedown to drive down National Highway 17 once you enter Kerala. (NH 17 is the one that connects Mumbai to Kochi, strictly speaking Panvel to Edappally.) It is a fairly broad road as it winds down Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka but abruptly becomes a chicken’s neck in Kerala. But how do you widen it in the face of popular and political disapproval?

“I should point out that this is not the only case where widening of roads has been stalled. NH 47 is one of the most important roads in Kerala since it connects the political capital, Thiruvananthapuram, to the commercial capital, Kochi. It also connects Kerala to neighbouring Tamil Nadu.

“The amount of traffic on NH 47 led the Governments of both Tamil Nadu and Kerala to realise that some measures would have to be taken.

“Tamil Nadu ensured that the stretch in Coimbatore was widened to a full six lanes while a bypass was built to handle the Salem-Erode traffic.

“How has Kerala handled its side of NH 47? Much of it is still no wider than two lanes (a third of that in Coimbatore). And while Erode bypass is now fully functional those around Alappuzha and Kollam are still being built in the most desultory fashion. (Can anyone even remember when the work started on these?) A bypass at Attingal was also “under consideration” the last I checked”.

An excess of politics has always been the unmaking of Kerala's infrastructure sector.

But rarely has one come across a spectacle in which a state minister openly admitted that his government was opposing a critical national highway project simply because it feared the Opposition scoring a political brownie point.

After the Centre rejected the LDF regime's plea for limiting the expansion of the multi-lane NH in Kerala to 30 metre in width against the nationally accepted 40 metre, the state industry minister started expressing the merits of following the national yardstick.

Maintaining that an all-party meeting will be called on the issue, the minister justified the earlier opposition to the project saying the ruling front was wary of the Opposition making an issue out of it during the upcoming panchayat polls. Now, imagine what can happen before the 2011 assembly polls!

Panel to monitor capital road development
Source: http://www.hindu.com/2010/06/03/stories/2010060362640300.htm

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A high-level committee headed by Law Minister M. Vijayakumar and District Collector Sanjay Kaul has been formed to review and monitor the progress of road development works in the capital.

The decision to form the committee comprising V. Sivankutty and V .Surendran Pillai, MLAs; Mayor C. Jayan Babu; Trida chairman Ajayakumar; and heads of various departments was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan here on Wednesday.

Mr. Vijayakumar told reporters that the committee would meet on Wednesdays to review the progress of the works. The next meeting will be held at 2 p.m. on June 9. The meeting decided to temporarily rehabilitate 54 traders at Thakaraparambu for constructing a flyover. He said necessary steps would be taken to solve the legal issues with the promoters of Big Bazaar. The flyover at Bakery Junction will be opened to traffic next month.

It has been decided to complete works such as shifting of utilities, clear water-logging and laying drinking water and drainage lines within a specified time schedule and coordinate the functioning of various departments to complete the ongoing projects of the KSUDP, JNNURM, JBIC and the Road Fund Board. Lack of coordination between various departments was one of the main impediment to completing the works on time. The high-level panel will ensure inter-departmental coordination, Mr. Vijayakumar said.

Almost 90 per cent of the work on laying underground power cables across 270 km has been completed by the Kerala State Electricity Board. Renovation of the Kesavadasapuram-Nalanchira road at an estimated cost of Rs.31 crore will begin on June 9. Tenders have been floated for Rs.21 crore and Rs.10 crore has been set apart for land acquisition. The meeting decided to complete majority of the works by December. It was decided to complete all works by March 31, 2011. Cheers!!!

Development of a Technology City in Thiruvananthapuram under the name ‘Technocity' is an already announced dream project of the State Government.

Business eco-system: Thiruvananthapuram's business eco-system has succeeded in creating the biggest Tier-II IT/ITeS destination in India which accounts for 75-80 per cent of Kerala's IT exports.

Human resources: Thiruvananthapuram has a significant catchment of human resources which primarily consists of southern Kerala and southern Tamil Nadu (Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Virudhunagar districts) and also extends to the rest of Kerala.Knowledge hub:

Thiruvananthapuram is one of India's leading hubs of research and development and higher education in terms of both the number of institutions of national importance and the sheer diversity of fields that they are involved in. This provides an excellent base for IT/ITeS and technology firms to source both intellectual capital and human resources.

Social infrastructure: All the facilities available in an Indian metro, if not in a major international city, are also available in Thiruvananthapuram.

Healthcare: The city has around 10 tertiary care hospitals and more than 50 specialty private hospitals in addition to high-quality public health-care. Thiruvananthapuram and the State also has perhaps the highest doctor-population ratios in India and has a human development index score on health which is close to developed countries such as the US and the UK.

Diverse portfolio: Unlike most other Tier- II IT/ITeS destination which focus mostly on BPO and low-end IT operations with focus on cost arbitrage, Thiruvananthapuram is focused on product and application development, KPO and R&D while still maintaining a healthy share of ITeS work.

Finally, the city also has a healthy record of home-grown successes, such as UST Global which has over 8,000 employees and offices across the world or IBS which is now a top provider of logistics software to leading airlines across the world. Over 300 SMEs operate in the IT/ITeS domain in the city and they provide a major captive market for both built-up space and developed land.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S .Achuthanandan will lay the foundation stone for the State’s biggest IT project, Technocity, at Pallipuram near here on Friday at 5 p.m.

Technocity is being developed in 450 acres at Pallippuram, which is about 5 km from the Technopark campus, An investment of over Rs 6000 crore is expected in the mega-project which would be developed on Public Private Partnership (PPP) basis, a statement issued here said on Thursday.

Technopark CEO Mervin Alexander said that with the establishment of Technocity, the whole belt would qualify for consideration under the Centre’s scheme of Information Technology Investment Regions (ITIR). The Technocity campus would have easy connectivity to road, rail and air transport networks.

Other than IT, Technocity will also seek to promote biotechnology, nanotechnology, high-end manufacturing and R&D sectors. By utilising the rich experience in developing Technopark, major companies would be invited to the Technocity once the project is developed, he said.

``Ever since Kerala has focused on IT as its growth vehicle, we have been dreaming of establishing a world class infrastructure - a one-stop-location - an IT City. With Technocity, this dream would become a reality, ‘’ IT Secretary Ajay Kumar said.

Technocity would be an integrated township, encompassing IT/ITES infrastructure, residential apartments, shopping malls, hospitals, hotels, educational institutions and other support facilities, he added.

Experts report Boscombe's £3m surf reef 'sub-standard'
The performance of Boscombe's £3m artificial surf reef since it opened has been sub-standard, Bournemouth Borough Council has confirmed.

The team found the surf reef only achieved four of its 11 objectives.

The council said it would withhold a £150,000 payment from its creator, ASR Ltd, until it is satisfied it works.

The New Zealand-based firm denied the reef failed and said it was only one of the criteria - the wave lengths - which it had not met.

Plymouth University, home of the UK's first marine institute, has been assessing the quality of the reef's waves and the number of days suitable for surfing since last September.

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) government which is to face general elections in less than a year also plans to launch two other major projects on the same stretch forming the technology corridor.
The 260-acre Life Sciences Park coming up at Thonnakkal would accommodate a cluster of biotechnology, nanotechnology and life sciences industries while a 337.57-acre Pravasi Gramam at Ayiroor will offer a replica of Kerala in terms of its culture, traditions, art forms and lifestyle for the non-resident Kerala community.

Since the election will be in less than a year, I hope that both the above projects will come faster.
While Life Science park is much heard about, i am hearing first time about the Pravasi Gramam in Ayiroor. I hope it is near Varkala. Has any one more input on it?

Rajesh, it is an ongoing debate with both sides still going over the facts. Wave modification is an evolving science and as with any complex natural phenomenon, sea waves are not easily modifiable and the reef structure may need to be tweaked.

What I find appalling is our instinct to be cynical and start with the complaints before the facts are even clear. Be it about T3, the JNNURM buses or NH development, the typical response of most Keralites is to see the negative side of any development. If there are no major downsides, somebody will do research to invent one!

And yet we complain about the lack of development!

It’s always better to start the project without much hype/publicity. Technocity is expecting investors from out of Kerala. National & overseas dailies have covered this news. FM Radios in Dubai had given enough publicity for Techno city same as Gulf dailies.
We can see many projects reported by our “mallu” media with much hype in the past were either abandoned or never materialized. The best examples: ONGC exploration well; Calicut Kinaraloor Malaysian satellite city, Vizhinjam project’s last bid, smart city, BMW, fashion city and many “cities” .. I still remember when the ONGC Rig moved to Kerala last year, one of the largest circulated mallu daily wrote 4 full pages articles with different titles from “Inventory of Oil” to “Queen of Arabia goanna become queen of oil very soon” etc…. The same daily didn’t write a single line when the well abandoned. Still a lot of poor mallus believe that the exploration activity is going on in Kerala and the oil will come out any time….. So no worries…..

You are absolutely right, I would be happier seeing reports in The Hindu, BL, BS and ET than in the toilet-rags which pass for dailies in Kerala.

However, the media cannot run away from its role of raising public awareness and support for development projects and still shed crocodile tears about the "lack of development"!

http://www.hayfestival.com/

A lot of new writing from India has been making a mark across the world, says a top organiser of Britain's Hay Festival that will host its first India edition in Kerala in November with around 40 leading authors.

"One of the reasons why we chose India is because writing from the country is fresh," said Lyndy Cooke, executive director of the festival.

"It is diverse and often reflects the challenges of this aspiring nation against a backdrop of great wealth and great poverty. It is this dichotomy that produces the richest of literature," Cooke told IANS in an e-mail interview from London.

The Nov 12-14 Kerala Hay Festival will draw nearly 15 international writers, 10 leading Indian writers and 15 local language authors.

The Hay Festival, one of the biggest in Britain, has several global editions in countries like Spain, Colombia, Kenya and Beirut. It is trying to make inroads in South Asia for the first time with an edition in the Maldives in autumn and one in Kerala in November.

"In India, the festival hopes to create a sustainable platform for sharing the incredible wealth of diasporic writing and literature in languages other than English," Cooke said.

The primary objective of the festival is to "create a platform for ideas and new thoughts and to bring about a debate between writers from Asia and the Western world," Cooke said.

The Kerala Hay Festival, modelled on the Jaipur lit fest and the Guardian Hay Festival of London, will be held in collaboration with Teamworks Productions and the state government in a sprawling heritage property in Thiruvananthapuram.

"India and Kerala have a rich tradition of literary writing in Malayalam. We want to expose some of the best of this to audiences in the West over a period of time," Cooke said.

The event, she said, would also "add value to the state's immense tourism potential" and cited the instance of the Hay on Wye Festival -Hay's flagship book showcase.

The 10-day literary gala is currently under way at the eponymous village by the Wye river on the England-Wales border. It is chock-a-block with writers, publishers, intellectuals, think tanks and publishing industry stake-holders.

"Literature can be linked to tourism. At Hay on Wye, we sell almost 200,000 tickets every year and 80 percent of the crowd are visitors who come to Wales and to our little village Hay on Wye - 240 km northwest of London. They live in hotels, bed & breakfast lodges, in a 100-km radius of the lush hamlet," Cooke said.

The village boasts of a population of 1,500 and 30 book shops. More than 100,000 people are expected to throng the 10-day festival that is often dubbed the "Woodstock of the Mind".

"The Hay Festival in the UK is a diverse festival covering a range of ideas and thoughts - and topics, including environment, arts, history and sociology. It encompasses almost everything, from fiction to politics, art and the spoken word.

"With 500 events across 11 days, it attracts record audiences each year. In Kerala, we will look at inviting the best international authors, thinkers and publishers every year," Cooke said.

But in India, the focus will be more specific - centring on literature, history and arts.

The organisers are euphoric about the venue of the India edition. "Kerala is a fabulous place. Our partners, Teamworks, and the Hay crew came to the same conclusion that the beaches of Thiruvananthapuram, the serene backwaters, the amazing cuisine and the ayurvedic massages all lent themselves to what will become a major festival destination for the world," Cooke said.

Sanjoy Roy, head of Indian partner Teamworks, told IANS: "After Jaipur, we felt we required to do something down south. It has enormous literary traditions. Moreover, the feel of the two places are also different.

"While Jaipur represents romance, royalty and valour, Kerala stands out for its laidback charm and the sensuous backwaters. We wanted to explore the state and set up new literary linkages."

NIce pictures,Vivek.
I am still bothered about the fact that the advantages of road widening will diminish to a good extent due to space lost for haphazard parking of vehicles. The reason for so many cars getting parked is the large number of shops on either side of the road and parking in the street is the only solution for the customers at present.
I wish the authorities try to arrange for 2 or 3 multistoried parking - one each at the two ends of the road and one in the middle. It is necessary to acquire land for this and eventhough it is a painful process, it has to be done. We may have to pay a good price but the same can be recovered through parking fees in the long run.

Hope it will happen.

Cheers!!!

^^ Its a shame for the whole Malayali Community that the MEGA project which is going to turnaround the economy of a whole district and even influential for the whole of Kerala has been ignored so ruthlessly by our rotten media. They do not deserve to be called media, rather should be called Paparazis who spend 25 out of 24 hrs sniffing behind useless politicians, covering their personal lives and political jumps instead of reporting news which affect or influence the lives of ordinary people. What they want is sensation, which they think is a political jump of a politician from his party to another or the wedding of a film actor to his/her lover. Shame on them! Technocity is the biggest project to happen in kerala in IT field, expected to bring 1 lakh direct jobs and 4 lakh indirect jobs. This is A super MEGA project as 433 acres of land has been acquired along the highway NH 47, which itself is an incredible achievement from the part of the government. Within 5 to 10 years, a metropolitan agglomeration and culture will develop in the Capital District, stretching from the Vizhinjam International Airport to the Technocity, with Trivandrum City enjoying the central position. This wonderful prospect of development of Tvm city has been cunningly hidden from the people by the medias. Even without any support from the medias, Technocity is cruising to roaring success, which indeed absolutely incredible. Kudos to the government for launching such a brilliant MEGA project. This will indeed be a project which will elevate the status of kerala as the IT hub of India. Cheers !!!

Cheers !!!

Perhaps it is better that growth happens without much ado. Why be the object of jealousy, when forces may work to scuttle development projects! Let the city grow up with substance rather than hype like it always has!

VS to launch four-lane work on Wednesday
________________________________________
Work is estimated to cost Rs.21 crore
________________________________________
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Work on widening the congested Kesavadasapuram-Nalanchira stretch of M.C. Road into four lanes will be inaugurated by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on Wednesday.
The road is being widened at an estimated cost of Rs.21 crore by the Public Works Department. The approval for the work has been given by the government and the tender formalities have been completed, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs M. Vijayakumar said.
Last year, the government had allocated Rs.8 crore to acquire land for widening the stretch.
The road beyond Nalanchira has already been widened and made into a four-lane stretch with a median and junction improvements have been made at Mannanthala. The development of the remaining stretch of M.C. Road till Kottarakara has been taken up under the World Bank-aided Kerala State Transport Project.
The development of the Kesavadasapuram-Nalanchira stretch has been a long-pending demand of the people as it is the entry point to the city from M.C. Road. Traffic snarls are a regular feature here during peak hours. The educational institutions on the stretch, the expansion of the city and the shifting of the Collectorate from Vanchiyoor to the Civil Station at Kudappannakkunnu have compounded the problems of motorists.
Mr. Achuthanandan will inaugurate the road widening work at a function at Nalanchira Kurisadi junction at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
Mr. Vijayakumar, who represents Thiruvananthapuram North, will preside over the function. Minister for Food and Civil Supplies C. Divakaran; Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran; Mayor C. Jayan Babu; Shashi Tharoor, MP; and Deputy Leader of the Opposition G. Karthikeyan will attend.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW ANY 4 LANE PLAN FOR REMAINING PART OF MC ROAD FROM MANNNTHALA TO THYCODE VIA VEMBAYAM & VATTAPPARA

The 4-laning of MC Road terminates at Mannanthala. Currently there are no plans to expand the width of carriageway beyond Mannanthala. But the World bank aided Thykode- Pothencode- Kazhakoottam (NH 47) link from MC Raod will be 16m wide with a 10m wide carriageway. Also the MC Road developement via Vattapara- Vembayam- Kilimanoor is finished, to the best of my knowledge.

And kindly avoid upper cases for posts Shimju, unless you have some very strong words to use. Thanks ;)

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Monsoon, retendering and land acquisition problems notwithstanding, the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) project in the capital city has picked up steam. Especially the water supply schemes under the project, which is being carried out at an estimated cost of Rs 87 crore.

As the water supply segment is integrated with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-aided water supply project, the KWA has started the work as a continuation of the JICA project. The packages under this include strengthening of the distribution network by laying new pipelines, replacing faulty water meters and rehabilitation work (replacing old domestic connections).

“A total of 600 km is to be covered under the package for strengthening the distribution network. Of this, nearly 70 percentage has been completed. This would benefit Thiruvananthapuram Corporation and adjoining panchayats, just like JICA project,’’ a KWA official said. This would cover areas like Thirumala, Thirumala zone, Vattiyoorkkavu, Peroorkada, Manvila, Powdikonam, Nemom and Thiruvallom. ``While PVC distribution pipes are being laid under the scheme, we are also commissioning a ductile iron pipe distribution network,’’ the official said.

The officials hope to commission the entire project by March next year. But, monsoon and lack of response from contractors for undertaking rehabilitation work will definitely cause delay.

^^Not finally, before the present expansion also, TVM Corporation was the biggest corporation with 86 wards and the Kochi and Kozhikode having 70 and 55 wards each. And TVM Corporation always had the largest population since its inception.

On a lighter note I would say with the expansion, the city will become little obese, rather than having a six pack.:)

^^ - Well, post expansion, Trivandrum sure will pack a punch with two of Kerala's largest infrastructure projects and money-spinners - Vizhinjam and the Technopark complex - firmly ensconced within its metropolitan limits and Technocity on its outskirts.

A good bet on the new Corporation's population would be about 1.5 million, well past the mark needed to be officially anointed a Metropolitan City as per GoI guidelines.

Yes Bhai, I always knew Tvm was the biggest in terms of Corporation size and population. What i meant by "finally" was the addition of the 5 panchayats to the corporation, which was been heard for quite some time now.. Trivandrum Corporation, with 86 wards, 141 sq km city size and 7.45 lakh population is bound to be the largest, exceeding the size of the next city by arnd 46 sq km and 1.80 lakh people. With the addition of the new wards, the metro ugglomeration size would be close to 250 sq km and the census 2011 could show the metro population to be close to 1.5 million. Any way you look at it, Trivandrum has just grown enormously in the last 10 years and would grow even more ferociously in the next decade. By 2020, Trivandrum ought to be populated with around 25 lakh people if the MEGA projects bear fruit. Cant wait to see that !!

Bakery Flyover awaiting inauguration, image from Keralakaumudi

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: After successfully undergoing the road worthiness test, the Bakery Junction Flyover is all set to be opened to the public. However, so far, there is no clarity on the date of inauguration as the Chief Minister is too busy!

Moreover, work on the road connecting Panavila and Thampanoor will take two more months to be completed because of the JICA-assisted water works. In short, the flyover will not be able to serve its role of a traffic easer in the coming two months.

The KWA-JICA authorities said that they would complete the work - pipe-laying and restoration of roads - by June 25, provided there is no rain. ‘‘Works could be completed by June 25 if there is no rain. So far, pipe works and restoration of roads are in full-swing from Panavila to Manorama Junction. We have completed the tarring of 200 m,’’ a senior JICA official said. After the JICA works, the PWD has to take up tarring. According to PWD sources, it would take two months to complete the JICA works, road- widening and tarring.

The JICA officials passed the buck on to the PWD for the delay in the work. ‘‘We had to stop work for almost a month owing to the flyover work. Instead of blaming us for the delay, the PWD could have initiated tarring on one lane of the road,” he said.

Currently, the TRDCL workers are busy with the widening of the approach road, painting of the crash bar and beams, and installation of lamps. Service roads are also getting ready with the flyover. The TRDCL authorities are waiting for the completion of JICA works so that they could take up the tarring works of the road leading to Thampanoor. A decision on the date of inauguration is expected to be finalised on Wednesday. The flyover is one of the major components of the Inner Ring Road, connecting Bakery Junction, Thampanoor, Overbridge, Uppidamoodu, Vanchiyoor, Pattoor, General Hospital and Palayam Junction.
