Tufan Ghosh, CEO, Columbia Asia Hospitals (India), says, “The new hospitals would offer all specialties and multispecialties, except invasive cardiology, radiation oncology and some neuro procedures.” While the construction for the hospital at Ghaziabad is over, development is in place for Lucknow, Thiruvanthapuram and Jalandhar.

Chennai, Sept. 18

IndiGo Airlines, one of the country's low fare airlines, intends to nearly double its flights out of Chennai within the next two months. Today, the airline has ten daily departures out of Chennai. By mid-November there will be 18 departures out of Chennai, the airline's President, Mr Aditya Ghosh, told Business Line today.

The first to start will be to Coimbatore, a new station for IndiGo. It will also launch direct flights to Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Thiruvananthapuram.

Mr Ghosh said that Chennai-Coimbatore fares will start at Rs 2,033, Chennai-Ahmedabad Rs 3,033, Chennai-Jaipur Rs 3,432. Thiruvananthapuram will be linked to Chennai a little later. Mr Ghosh said that in the last 14 months, IndiGo enjoyed average load factors in the upwards of 80 per cent.

Currently, IndiGo has a fleet of 28 aircraft – all Airbus A 320s. Six more A-320s will join its fleet by December, and 14 more next year.

International routes

Asked when IndiGo might fly to destinations abroad, Mr Ghosh said that the airline was still 11 months away from attaining eligibility. (Domestic airlines have to have flown at least five years within India before they are allowed to operate on overseas routes.)

“We are looking at launching our overseas operations in August 2011,” Mr Ghosh said. The airline would initially look at destinations in West Asia and South-East Asia.

What we (I) want is connection to Bangalore.

Chennai connection is better than Bangalore as of now, even has three daily trains (more would be there including guruvayur & other weekly trains, but I am commenting about the evening departure/morning arrival trains) including superfast one to Chennai, while to Bangalore there is not even one 'daily' train. (I don't consider Kanniyakumari Express as a good connection to TVM as it leaves and arrives at odd hours, not suitable for a weekend hop to Tvm.

The first to start will be to Coimbatore, a new station for IndiGo. It will also launch direct flights to Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Thiruvananthapuram.

THIRUVANATHAPURAM: Motorists and pedestrians along the Sasathamangalam-Vellayambalam road were welcomed to a bizarre scene on Tuesday. After the long and tedious road-widening works, the workers were busy razing down the top portion of the newly-constructed drain!

Drains on the 60-70-metre stretch are being razed from the top. The entire stretch, which was concreted after completing the drain works, has been dug up again to make changes in the alignment of the drain.

According to the implementing agency Thiruvananthapuram Development Company Limited (TRDCL), the work is intended to keep the alignment on a par with the yet-to-be-developed Sasthamangalam Junction.

TRDCL vice-president Anil Kumar Pandala said, “There has been a major change in the original plan of the junction. Originally, it was planned as a signal junction. When environmentalists raised objections to the cutting down of trees, a new plan was worked out to improve the junction. As a result, there was a shift in the alignment. So, we have to raze down the drain to equalise the alignment.”

Though construction and now its demolition are going on, there is no sign of improving the junction. The Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB) had heeded to the demand of environmentalists and decided not to cut trees by August-end.

The trees on the roadsides, which have to be cut down for the works, still remain untouched. The road has been dug up for the drain work for the past several days. After solving the row over the trees, lack of co-ordination among various departments regarding the utility shifting is another reason for the delay.

Kerala Tourism plans mega project to leverage the tourism potential of the beach destination

Thiruvanananthapuram: Kerala Tourism is planning to implement a mega project at Varkala to address infrastructural inadequacies and lack of tourist amenities at the destination.

The Papapanasam, Thiruvambady and Kappil beaches are sought-after spots. The Kerala Tourism Infrastructure and Investment Company (formerly Tourist Resorts Kerala Ltd.), a State government undertaking, will implement the project on a public-private partnership mode.

This is the company's second project after the one at Veli in Thiruvananthapuram.

No land acquisition is involved as a 2.62-hectares site had been identified on the government guest house premises in Varkala. The site is close to the Paapanasam beach and The Gateway Hotel, a joint initiative of the tourism infrastructure company and the Taj Group.

Leveraging on the proximity to the 2000-year-old Janardhanaswamy temple, Sivagiri Mutt, Anjengo Fort, Ponnumthuruthu island and the capital, the implementing company found that the site could be developed into a highly productive tourism product.

The Gateway hotel is already on the premises. The initiative is in the preparatory stage.

The feasibility aspect is being looked into it, Tourism sources said.

‘Expressions of interest' will be sought soon from potential investors. Work is expected to commence soon, they said.

After TCS, Oracle to set foot in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It is now official -- software and hardware systems company Oracle would be the next IT major to set up shop in Kerala, a top IT official said here Friday.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a state IT official said the decks have been cleared and Oracle is arriving to set up shop in the state capital.

"The question now is the scale of their operations -- if it is going to be a big one or a medium-scale operation," said the official.

Headquartered in Redwood Shores, California, Oracle Corporation specialises in developing and marketing enterprise software products -- particularly database management systems.

As on July, they employed more than one lakh professionals across the globe.

Oracle officials held talks with government officials here and the details are likely to be known after the local bodies polls are over Oct 27.

"Oracle has been confirmed and another IT major which we are expecting to get a favourable decision to set up shop here is IBM. With TCS already signing up early this month to set up their biggest training centre at the proposed Technocity campus near Technopark, IT initiative for the state is moving in the right direction," said the official.

Last week, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan handed over to TCS the government order allotting them 82 acres of land to set up their training centre which would have facilities to train 15,000 professionals.

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/ites/After-TCS-Oracle-to-set-foot-in-Kerala/articleshow/6620031.cms

It is now official that IT giant Oracle has decided to set up development center in Kerala's IT destination Trivandrum

Is this a new service? To my knowledge this service started about 6 months back. I'm so sure about this because i see this bus daily when it pass by my house at neyyattinkara. Even yesterday i saw it.
But when i enquired they said that its their flagship service between tvm and chennai and the one way ticket is about 1050rs. Its quite expensive as we have to pay only 800-900 for a trip in a volvo b9r.
And its true that its the only merc multi axle bus in south india

To my knowledge this service started about 6 months back.

Perhaps the company was test-running the bus to see if the market would support it. Guess, it does work in Trivandrum, which is why it was debuted on this route!

A 10% price premium is not much for the level of service provided by these buses. I have been on the Merc Intercity Coach a couple of times (outside India) and it's awesome. The vehicle costs about Rs 1 Crore in India, so the ticket would be a bit more expensive as well.

I remember when the Volvo B7R was first introduced, people were surprised that the ticket was about 20% more expensive than the prevailing rates for high-tech, AC buses. But pretty soon, that became the standard.

Even if your write in Malayalam script you need an English translation - may not be sentence by sentence, but which gives the gist of the malayalam report. That way those Indians particularly Keralites in foreign countries who are of this generation but do not speak or read malayalam can appreciate what is written.
We have to think globally, even if act or write locally. That is the reality now.
The worst case senario arises when those who are well versed in Malayalam cannot read malayalam reports since the browser so not support the malayalam script. We are not able to use the supporting browser to download the fonts because of some security issues.
I hope that every one will stick to the rules laid down by senior members who started this wonderful 'information exchange platform'.
I just love this Trivandrum forum and the useful contributions made by the learned members. My sincere thanks to them fpr makeing me feel a true Keralite though living in the other side of the Glob

I too really doubt.... especially the one wrt IBM to set up campus in Technocity....

It is logical to say that IBM might start their operations from TP phase - III(when the buildings under construction becomes operational) or any from any other existing buildings in TP simply because IBM doesn't own any building anywhere in the world; with an exception being the PwC building at Kolkata and may be its headquarters at Armonk(which I am not sure of)..

I too really doubt.... especially the one wrt IBM to set up campus in Technocity....

As you said, Technopark Phase III (1 million SF) will the first building to hit the market, sometime in H2-2011. However, any major company, be it IBM, Oracle or Accenture, would open up a smaller seed facility initially before gradually scaling up to the eventual size, which tends to be of the order of 10-15,000 people (1-1.5 million SF).

So we could be looking at an 18-24 month time-frame before one of these MNCs starts moving from seed facility status to full-blown campus, as was the case with Infy when it opened up in Trivandrum. This sort of time-line leaves plenty of time for a large developer to set up the first phase of a new IT park, either in Phase III or Technocity.

Technocity offers much more flexibility and scope for expansion than Phase III. So if the immediate focus would be on Phase III, any developer with a long term interest in Trivandrum would look at Technocity.

And something tells me that there is more than one major developer evaluating Trivandrum very, very seriously! ;)

That said, let's hold the bubbly till we hear from the companies themselves. Whenever a news item is attributed to an "unnamed XYZ", I would take it with a generous pinch of salt. I would probably guess that some of these companies are talking to the Government about developing facilities in Trivandrum. Somebody just got too enthusiastic in reporting it at this stage.

The key thing is that all these companies are coming to Trivandrum. I love the way some of the papers have put a "Kerala" spin on the news so that it seems that the firms are looking at other places in Kerala as well, when the truth is that they know where they would like to be.

Anyways, better to be safe than sorry and stuck with just a bunch of hot air and hype. Right? ;)

But per this report, the proposed head office is somewhere else ??

Lol, although any report in the afore-mentioned paper are to be taken with a healthy pinch of salt, the fact that the director in question is developing an office building in "somewhere else" meant for airline offices makes one wonder if there is a blatant conflict of interest at work. Especially considering the fact that AIX's engineering base is in Trivandrum, as is a super-prime piece of land and building which could easily be developed into an HQ right in the center of the State Capital.

I wonder?!

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Amidst final steps to commence international services from the new terminal of the Thiruvananthapuram airport, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is actively considering operation of both international and domestic services from the new terminal.

AAI officials here have already sent a proposal in this regard to their headquarters in New Delhi. The National Aviation Company of Indian Limited (Air India) had also raised a demand to operate both the domestic and international services from the new terminal.

``The proposal is under the active consideration of our headquarters. However, it may take some time to get the final nod as lots of technical factors are involved,’’ AAI sources said.

A major point being raised for the integration of both the terminals is that the peak-time passenger handling capacity of both the existing international and domestic terminals would come to only 1,000 whereas the new terminal could accommodate up to 1,600 passengers during peak hours. Hence, integration of both the international and domestic terminals with the new terminal would not lead to any congestion in the airport. The number of domestic passengers is only around one-third of the total number of international passengers.

Another impact of operating both domestic and international services from the new terminal would be on the user development fee. Once the domestic services are also operated from the new terminal the domestic passengers would also have to bear the user fee. In such a case, the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority would have to rework the user fee which is now fixed at Rs 755.

At present, 14 airlines are operating international services from the Thiruvananthapuram Airport and four airlines are operating domestic services.

The new terminal is close to the city by around four kms compared to that of the existing domestic and international terminals. Hence, operating both domestic and international service from here would be convenient to the users, except for the user fee factor.

At a meeting of officials of various airlines and other agencies associated with the airport held here on Monday, NACIL had demanded integration of both domestic and international services from the new terminal. A delegation of NACIL would be holding further talks with AAI officials here on Friday.

Meanwhile, sources at a private airline alleged that there was a move to allow NACIL alone to operate both domestic and international services from the new terminal. Any such decision would invite strong protest from the other domestic airlines, especially Jet Airways, which is also operating both international and domestic services.

Kingfisher and Paramount are the two other airlines operating domestic service from Thiruvananthapuram. AAI officials are going ahead with steps to commence operations from the airport before October 20. An Air India Express flight would conduct a trial flight on October 14.

Obey traffic rules else you will be caught
Surveillance Cameras in Trivandrum City!
Yes, 12 Surveillance Cameras are in place along city roads which can zoom and record objects upto 600 meters. Dome type cameras are used in Trivandrum, which can tilt and rotate giving a full 360 degrees freedom. These unlike the spy cams positioned in some places of the city to reduce crime and eve teasing, are used exclusively for recording traffic violations. It may be used for other purposes like crowd watch depending upon the situations.

Currently the cameras are placed in Vellayambalam, Museum, LMS, Palayam, VJT hall, Secretariat, Azad gate, Overbridge, Pazhavangadi, Eastfort, Thampanoor (ICH) , Thampanoor Ponnara park. Another camera will be placed at Keltron junction especially to track signal violators. A speed tracking camera will be placed in Kaudiar – Vellayambalam road to track teen racers who prefer that particular stretch as their version of a GP track. 25 more cameras will be placed soon in the city.
Traffic violations such as jumping signals, stopping on zebra cross, ignoring no parking warnings are registered through the Surveillance Cameras now. The cameras are powerful enough for them to charge you even for not wearing seat belts. The cameras are assisted with loud speakers so that police can alert people after watching them. So don’t get amazed next time when the loud speaker warns you not to park the car there. Once you are caught on camera for a violation, police will send a ticket to your address ( they will get it using your vehicle registration number ). You have to pay the fine by going to the station. And we cannot deny it as they have visual proo

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 4 (PTI) Leader of the Opposition in Kerala Assembly Oommen Chandy today demanded that the headquarters of budget airline Air India Express (AIE) be shifted from Mumbai to Thiruvananthapuram. In a statement here, Chandy said barring a few services to Mumbai, 80 per cent of the services of AIE were from Kerala to the Gulf countries. If the headquarters of the airline was shifted to Thiruvananthapuram, expenditure for the functioning of AIE office could be reduced and steps could be taken to avoid neglect towards the Gulf sector, he said. Chandy wanted the state government to put pressure on the Civil Aviation Ministry for the shifting of the AIE office to the state capital. The suggestion to this effect made by M A Yusuf Ali, NRK businessman and Director, AIE, at its recent Director Board meeting in Mumbai, had been supported by other members on the Board, Chandy said.

Israeli billionaire Mordechai Zisser's Elbit is holding talks to offload majority interests in its Indian real estate investments as part of a strategy to pare exposure to the local market, said sources directly familiar with the situation.

Indian developer K Raheja is among the potential suitors discussing a buy into Elbit's assets in the southern cities of Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram.

In 2007, Tel Aviv and Nasdaq-listed Elbit Imaging Ltd, through its real estate and retail arm Plaza Centres NV, acquired land banks in India's southern and western cities just ahead of the global economic crisis, and unveiled plans of over $1 billion investment into developing shopping malls, hotels, hospitals, office and residential units.

One source said, Elbit may consider outright sale of the land as it was coming out of the three-year lock-in on FDI in real estate.

This source added that Elbit would be open to exiting mainstream real estate play in India and stay focused on other growth sectors like healthcare in the country. Globally, Zisser's diversified conglomerate Elbit carries interests in real estate, healthcare, agriculture, shopping malls and retail.

K Raheja Corp is believed to be discussing a joint development, in which it would have 70% interest, while Elbit and the other shareholders will keep the remaining 30%. This 70:30 JV is under discussion for developing Elbit's 130 acre land in Chennai, located near Sirusseri, and 9 acre property in Thiruvananthapuram, in close proximity to the city's Aakulam Lake.

Industry sources said the Chennai land holds potential for developing 8-10 million sqft of mixed use real estate, and the Thiruvananthapuram project could be well over one million sqft by size.

If the deal goes through, it would essentially mean Raheja taking charge of the real estate development, while Elbit and other shareholder will keep minority interests in lieu of the land ownership. Alternatively, if Elbit was to sell the land, it could fetch around Rs 5 crore per acre for the Surusseri propery near Chennai.

The ongoing talks between Raheja and Elbit are still in early stages and a positive outcome is not definite, sources added.

Emails sent to Elbit Imaging and K Raheja did not elicit any response at the time of publication of this article. Text message sent to Elbit India Real Estate executive also did not elicit a response.

Elbit along with local partners had acquired land in Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Bangalore, Pune and Kochi nearly three years ago. Sources said Elbit's proposed projects in Bangalore and Kochi, in partnership with Mantri Developers and Salarpuria Group respectively, did not take off.

The Israeli firm took complete control of a 6,50,000 sqft mall and hotel project in Pune, which was planned along with Avinash Bhosale Group . The fate of its second project near Pune, in partnership with Panchshil Group, is not clear.

Elbit was the most prominent among a wave of Israeli investments into Indian real estate during 2007, most of which have been rolled back in the wake of the worst global economic slowdown since the 1930s.

The Israeli groups that came with ambitious plans in Indian real estate include Property and Building Corp, Electra Real Estate, Gindi Holdings, Alony Hertz Properties and Meshulam Levinstein Contracting Ltd.

I think that it is not true to some extent. For eg: Mercedes Benz (Sundaram motors) has dealerships in Chennai & Coimbatore. Audi plans to start dealership in Coimbatore.

Currently, Merc showroom in Kochi is run by Rajashree motors (it has service centres in Kochi, Trivandrum & Calicut), BMW by Platino classic.

EVM motors is expanding very fast with brands like Honda Motorcycles and Volkswagen. Now it plans to start dealership of another automobile giant. Wow.. Great :)

Great news :)
Have you noticed? This companies only have one outlet per state in India except Maharashtra and many states are not even having one.
If any of the above companies come to Trivandrum, Kerala will have 2 outlets :)
This shows the interest of companies to start one more outlet in a small state like Kerala especially for Trivandrum ^^

Nice pictures. But no idea where these STREETS are in Tvm.
Since now our city can boast of nice looking many streets, it is difficult to identify which is the sttreet particularly for those trivandrumites who live outside for a long time. Either there should be a good land mark like Musuem, Palayam church, Secretariat etc or there should be caption sufficient to know the street and enjoy the drawing.

Cheers!!!

e-toilets in Trivandrum City – Innovation from a Technopark Company!

e-toilets – The fully automated, with automated hygienic public comfort stations, with automatic payment collection, door opening, flushing, floor cleaning, sterilizing, and cleaning system is about to install in the various locations like bus stations and Railway stations in trivandrum city.

The tourism department is planning to install electronic toilet or e-toilet in the city. The first one will be installed in the premises of Kanakakunnu palace. Later many public e-toilets will be installed all around the city. The toilet was developed by Dea Celera Electronic Devices Private Ltd, a Technopark based company. Described as the first Indian version of the European public toilets, these can be a one-stop solution to overcome the hygiene-related issues associated with the maintenance and use of manual public toilets.

The e-toilets are fully automated, with automated payment collection, door opening, flushing, floor cleaning, sterilising, and cleaning system. The toilets can be powered by solar panels or by the grid. Every toilet has been provided with power back-up using batteries.

SMS alerts are another feature of this toilet. SMS will be sent to the concerned authorities if there is a problem with the system or the water level/power backup is low or if the person inside is using the toilet for more than 20 minutes. Just drop in the coins and the toilets is ready to use. The flushing and cleaning will be done when you exit the toilet.

Depending on add-on features such as washbasin, toilet seat sterilisation facility, solar panels, bio-enzyme tanks to treat black water and air-conditioning, the cost of Delight toilets ranges between Rs.2 lakh and Rs.7 lakh. E toilet is getting popular as it installed its first system in Delhi.

Trivandrum ranked a close runnerup in fisherfolk population as per the below report. The Ponmudi tracking centre is rightly located close to a major chunk of the beneficiaries. Are there any Cityfirms are playing a role in the 'software section' ? Ther's a lot of scope in here for development and testing of tracking software for boats. The below initiative by Govt to regulate boats ensures that all genuine boats are in the net ( network database maintained at base station)

The Fisheries dept HQ @ Vikas Bhavan won this PC quest award for the below initiative on regulation of boats. IT enabling of the fisheries sector helps in the quicker disposal of benefits and subsidies as end users are tracable.

Meanwhile, also of great siginficance to Kerala is the National Marine Fisheries Census 2010, which will gather information about workers engaged in marine fishing and related matters. According to the Kerala State Planning Board, the estimated fisherfolk population of Kerala during 2007-08 is 11.22 lakh, which includes 8.64 lakh in the marine sector and 2.58 lakh in the inland sector. Out of this, the number of active fishermen is estimated as 2.28 lakh, which comprises 1.98 lakh marine and 0.30 lakh inland fishermen. Alappuzha district leads in the population ranking of fisherfolk, with a population of 1.88 lakh, followed by Thiruvananthapuram, with 1.85 lakh.

Ernst & Young, one of the leading consultancy and auditing firms in the world, would be recruiting around 300 IT professionals to its global IT support centre in Technopark.

“Started in Technopark with 10 employees during 2002, Ernst & Young now has a workforce of 680 at two offices on Technopark campus. We are planning to recruit another 300 IT professionals by the end of this fiscal,” said Tim Eddy, Global Vice-Chairman of Ernst & Young Global Services in a brief chat with Express here on Wednesday. Night Journey through Thaikod (SH1)-Kazhakoottam (NH-47) Link.Good work by KSTP.:okay:
The RoW varies from 15m to 20m depends on the land availability and is having a constant 12m Carriageway.
All the way you can see road studs and WBCB fixed with studs/reflectors and gaurd stones with reflectors which allows you to drive safely at night.I was travelling along this stretch around 10pm.
Only drawback I observed, there was no direction board while you reach Pothencode Jn. which makes confusion.:ohno:

Air India plans to rebrand its international low-cost subsidiary Air India Express and move the latter’s headquarters from Mumbai to Thiruvananthapuram.

Air India Express mostly flies to West Asian destinations, and a large number of its passengers are from Kerala. Moving its headquarters to Kerala’s capital city will, Baldauf said, lead to “better operational synergies”.

Yes Ajith,Trivandrum needs bigger commercial space. Most of the existing ones are converted old Murukkan Kadas. So,is the shape and area.

It is high time for shop owners / land owners to utilise the vertical space along the main roads(Sasthamangalam- East Fort,PMG-Pattom-Kesavadasapuram-Medical College,Kaudiar-Peroorkada,Vellayambalam-Thycaud-Thampanoor and Thampanoor-Karamana-Pappanamcode).

It is refreshing news that is being reported from the Vizhinjam desk.

Last week, the state Government decided to adopt the tried and tested “LANDLORD” Model to implement the Vizhinjam International Port. There are several misconceptions and most people do not understand the concept. The previous two failed rounds of bidding had adopted the BOT model (Build-operate-transfer), in which a private partner consortium is selected by tender basis, to come and build the entire port and also operate it on a long term concession basis.

It is important to understand why the Government (through VISL or Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd) has gone in for a different model, viz Landlord this time and not chosen to repeat the previous BOT model. The most authoritative news about this plan appears in the Hindu Business Line of 15th October

More heartening is the news about the CII being exposed to the potential of the port.(see quote below)

VISL together with CII is organizing a Maritime opportunities conclave in mid November in which business leaders and maritime companies from around the world will participate. Vizhinjam will be showcased at this event and there will be focused sessions on Vizhinjam for the potential investors as well as site visits to the project. Currently land acquisition is going on in full swing and environmental studies are progressing. Road construction has started and Railways have given approval for construction of rail line.

Mumbai-based multi brand retail chain The Loot has chalked out expansion plans to open outlets in Kerala through franchisee mode.

The company will launch its first store in Thiruvananthapuram in the first week of November followed by Palakkad and Thrissur.

“We are planning to open number of stores in Kerala through our franchisee concept and we don't have any plan to open the company owned stores in the State,” Mr Nishanth Kripakar, Area Manager, BD (Kerala) said.

“Loot does not mean that we loot the customers, but that we offer merchandise at a price which is equivalent to a Loot price,” he said.

The company is offering minimum 25 per cent to maximum 60 per cent discount for top national and international brands at stores throughout the whole year.

It is a 365 days discount chain, he said.

Warehouse

The Loot had started its operations in 2004 by opening its first retail outlet in Mumbai. Now the company operates 150 outlets throughout the country of which 110 franchisee store and 40 company-owned outlets.

More than 2,50,000 sq.ft are under operations and it had introduced in house brands Eccentrics and Bus Stop.

It is also having a centralised warehouse of 100,000 sq ft. The company has also won several awards for the best value store in India, he added.

A new entrant in the broadcast news segment is all set to foray in the Malayalam speaking state Kerala on a 24X7 format. 'Mathrubhumi News' is waiting for the authorities' nod for the launch as the application is still pending with them.

Mathrubhumi News is the new initiative of Mathrubhumi Printing and Publishing Company, the operators of Malayalam newspaper Mathrubhumi. The new channel will focus on general news, happenings and current affairs.

The operational set up for the channel will be based in Thiruvananthpuram and it will probably go on air early next year.

Shreyams Kumar, Director, Electronics Media, Mathrubhumi Printing and Publishing Co informed exchange4media that the company was waiting for the license for the channel to go on air.

The recruitment process for the news channel was currently underway, Kumar said, adding, "We will come in and expand the market. The market share for news is relatively low (around 9 per cent) in Kerala. We are quite confident of giving good content by leveraging our experience and expertise. We are socially very sensitive to the requirements of the people. We are independent and do not owe allegiance to any group or any of those sort."

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The country’s first Global Positioning System (GPS)-enabled street lights have started functioning in the city. Among the proposed 220 street lights, the Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Limited (TRDCL) has installed as many as 27 GPS-enabled street lights along the Vellayambalam-Sasthamangalam stretch.

The new facility, installed with the support of Crompton Greaves, will light up the 42-km stretch of roads which will be developed under the City Road Improvement Project (CRIP). As of now, 27 street lights on the Vellayambalam-Sasthamangalam road and six along the LMS-Netaji Bose square stretch have started functioning.

The GPS-enabled system will help the technicians to control operations from a different point. If there is a power failure or voltage fluctuation or third party intervention, the SIM card attached to each light will send a message to the operator, who can resolve the error from a remote location. In short, power failures and other technical issues could be attended to without delay. TRDCL officials will execute the maintenance works, based on mobile inputs.

“In addition to this, there is a separate mechanism to step up and step down voltage automatically according to the need. For example, the light will be very bright till 12.30 am. Between 12.30 am and 2 am, the light will be dim. Between 2 am and 5 am, the light will be very dim. One hour before sunrise, the lights will be stepped up to high voltage. Using this method, energy will be saved up to 35 percent,” said TRDCL vice-president Anil Kumar Pandala.

Being a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, the GPS-enabled street lights on the CRIP roads glow as a symbol of pride.

Sajeev, who studied in the UK, and had his shops in the UK and Dubai (Spectrum Group), is back in his hometown with a new concept for Trivandrumites – the Limited Edition Shopping Mall. “It’s the first of its kind in Trivandrum,” says Sajeev.

Limited Edition is located at Pulimoodu, MG Road, and was inaugurated by Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Member of Parliament, on July 8. The five-storeyed mall consists of different sections for men and women, a dedicated section for footware, and also a US Dollar store. This is the first time the US Dollar store is introduced in Trivandrum, where in each item you purchase will cost Rs. 99.

Limited Edition is sure to set trends. “We have introduced valet drivers keeping in mind the rush at MG road,” says Sajeev.

Sajeev is encouraged by people's response. “People are streaming in to know what is in here, but the shop hasn’t started working in full swing yet. We still have two floors to be completed.”

“The US Dollar store is an unfamiliar concept in Trivandrum and it’s nice to see styling gels, cuddly bears, board games and a whole range of things for just Rs. 99. I’m eagerly waiting for the food court,” says Adwaith Menon, an engineering student who came to check out the shop.

The ground floor consists of the US Dollar store and other imported showpieces and accessories. The first floor is exclusively for leather products and shoes; all the branded names from Nike to Adidas to Reebok and also unbranded and handmade ones are on display. The second floor is exclusively for men’s clothing.

The women's section will open in two weeks and the food court in the top floor will start working after two months. “We are doing our best to introduce a UK-based restaurant chain, coffee shop and also a chaat corner,” adds Sajeev, who keeps his fingers crossed hoping for the very best.

The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is planning to extend the services of low-floor A/C and non-A/C buses to the suburban towns of Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam districts. The proposal in this regard will be submitted to the Local Self-Government Department soon, sources said.

Presently, the low-floor buses pressed into service as part of the JNNURM project can only ply within the limits of TRIDA (Trivandrum Development Authority) in the capital and of GCDA (Greater Cochin Development Authority) in Kochi. According to top officials of the KSRTC, which is now operating the services on a temporary basis, plying of low-floor buses within the city will not serve the purpose of the project. Besides, officials feel that the extension of services to rural areas will help them minimise the loss caused by these services.

‘’The main aim behind the introduction of low-floor services is to promote the public transportation in the city, thereby reducing the influx of private vehicles into the city areas. To achieve this goal, the services of low-floor buses have to be extended to suburban towns like Nedumangad, Neyyattinkara, Attingal and the like in Thiruvananthapuram. In Kochi, services should be extended to Muvattupuzha, Kolencherry and Piravom. If we can operate regular services from these points, the influx of private vehicles to the city will decrease considerably,’’ a top KSRTC official said.

Though profit-making is not a major objective of the project, officials expressed concern over the loss caused by these services. ‘’For the service to be operated without any loss, there should be an income of Rs 50 per kilometre for A/C buses and Rs 38 per kilometre for non A/C buses. But, presently, the average revenue per kilometre for A/C buses ranges from Rs 33 to Rs 38, whereas the collection per kilometre is below Rs 30 for non-A/C services. There is not much variation in the net income from both districts,’’ the official said.

The official added that the present services operated in both cities will not be withdrawn. At present, 16 low-floor buses are operating in Thiruvananthapuram and 41 in Kochi. Besides, as many as 40 low-floor buses, including A/C and non-A/C, have been kept ready for service at the KSRTC Central Works, Kaimanam here. Under the JNNURM project, 150 low- floor buses (30 A/C and 120 non-A/C) have been sanctioned for Thiruvananthapuram, whereas 170 buses, including 50 A/C buses, have been allotted to Kochi.

Lol, seems like one well-aimed RTI request can bring a lot of facts to the surface. KSRTC seems to have a moving income target, earlier it was about Rs 40/Km, as if to keep showing the JNNURM services to be unprofitable even as their revenue streams steadily improve.

TDF had filed an RTI with the KSRTC and followed it up with appeal, and the statements of buses being unprofitable seem to have mysteriously vanished within a couple of weeks of that. Constant follow-up will keep those in charge on their toes.

I do hope that they deploy an adequate number of buses on the current routes to build up minimum frequencies (once every 10/15 minutes) before they venture out into the suburban routes where the distances involved are much larger (Trivandrum's metropolitan area is over 60 Km long from North to South) and consequently, the frequencies possible will be much lower.

.For south kerala anyway there would be one in tvm under development.

The development of Kerala's first dedicated International standard cricket stadium is well underway in Trivandrum as part of the National Games infrastructure development.

A second round of design modification has been completed for all four stadiums. Preliminary site studies are already complete. The final stage of the BOT bid process will be complete in the next couple of weeks and once the Cabinet has approved the bid, the winners will be revealed.

A transparent bid process is the best way to ensure that some of the allegations around other sporting facility proposals in other places are not repeated here. Moreover, as these stadiums are coming up on Government land, there is no question of shady land deals or accusations of wholesale environmental destruction.

Karaman Kaliyikkavila road widening will never gonna happen, as there is no politician who stood stern, in front of obstacles as of now. Now the goverment is utilizing crores of Rs. for settling the land acquitions. Instead of going for that why cant they think of extending the bypass road connected to Balaramapuram or Neyyattinkara. Here in this case most of the lands can be easily acquired, that which is not having any commercial scope. From Kazhakkoottam to Kaliyikkavila 6 lane road can be made without much delay, which can be connected to quadrilateral highway (Salem- Kanyakumari). Otherwise the land acquisition itself will take years and years to complete. The existing Karamana - Balaramapuram road can be used for LMV's as well as City Services upto Balaramapuram, can reduce traffic. All long distances carriers will go via Kazhakkootam - Thiruvallam - Neyyatinkara - Kaliyikkavila (6 Lane road).

Are you talking about palayam under pass? then i will have to agree!!

Here we are talking about Bakery jn flyover and arayidathupalam flyover!! i have said that the former is 6 months young to the latter!!

A grade separator can either be a flyover or an underpass, that is any structure which separates the uniform grade of a running highway into two different grades.

A bridge is a structure built to span a gorge, valley, road, railroad track, river, body of water, or any other physical obstacle, for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle.

Ajith, i have told you that if palayam under pass is considered its the first grade seperator in whole of kerala, here we are talking about arayidathupalam & bakery jn flyovers!! my point was, the former was completed and open for traffic 6 months back than the latter!! so it clears the confusion, and the news u quoted in june was regarding the opening of Bakery jn flyover, which i quoted here, so hope its clear.

First i dint get that you were talking about Palayam under pass, i edited it when i thought of it and understood that it will be the first one when it is considered as a grade sepertor. So that clears the confusion. Palayam underpass is the first underpass grade separator and arayidathupalam is the first grade seperated flyover!!
