THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government is planning to raise the funds for the proposed Life Science Park in Thiruvananthapuram with the support of the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC).

Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem informed the Assembly on Tuesday that 260 acres of land has been identified for the project at Veyiloor near Thonakkal in the district. The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 300 crore. The separate projects that will come up in the proposed park are expected to get Central assistance, he said in a written reply. A feasibility study for the project has already been conducted. The Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology will be able to make use of the facilities at the proposed park, which is expected to have projects in the fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, nano-technology and other research projects, the Minister said in a written reply to Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan and N Sakthan.

Meanwhile, sources said that the Government is planning to form a separate company under the KSIDC for setting up the life science park.

It is very happy to hear this news. HLL is a Trivandrum based Mini-ratna PSU. Currently, they are targeting to achieve Navaratna status. For that they should have facilities in more towns/cities. As part of this, they are planning to start a big manufacturing facility in Chennai (I think, it is for medical equipments - not sure about it). Our state government could have attracted this investment to the upcoming Life Sciences Park. This shows how much better and efficient other state governments are, in attracting and giving ample support for investments. The best example is the Vizhinjam container terminal. If it is in any other state, it would have been materialized years ago. Hope that this time, government can overcome all the hurdles and start the project at the earliest.

Really no offense meant...

Thiruvananthapuram: A pre-Railway Budget conference of MPs convened by Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Vijayakumar, who holds charge of railway development, turned sour on Friday following Railway officials' failure to turn up for discussions.

Mr. Vijayakumar did not hide his consternation at a press conference held after the meet, terming it as a serious lapse on the part of the officials and a breach of privilege of the MPs. He said he would officially inform the Prime Minister about the incident.

The Minister had convened the meeting to discuss the development projects to be included in the Railway Budget. Only 10 MPs attended the meet, with only two MPs, Jose K. Mani of the Kerala Congress (M) and K.P. Dhanapalan of the Congress, representing the United Democratic Front being present. A majority of the MPs appeared to have not taken the Minister's conference seriously.

The big i 7 star apartment project and the 36 floor i park is progressing in snails pace. The piling work of the big i is finished and the basement construction is going on. But in the i park it has been months since the piling works had got over. Still there is no sign of any work on the superstructure. Wish this new year turn out to be in favor of trivandrum.

TCS signs up for Rs 15 bn learning facility in Kerala
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala's IT sector, which is still going through uncertainties about the SmartCity project promoted by UAE-based Tecom, has landed a prestigious investment with TCS signing up for a mega learning centre at the state capital.

The Rs1,500 crore Global Learning Centre of TCS will come up at the TechnoCity, close to the Technopark here.

Kerala IT department officials said a lease deed was signed for 83 acres of land and TCS had made the initial down payment of Rs75.25 crore. TCS director and CFO S Mahalingam said the centre would train and accommodate 15,000 employees at any time. He said the company would have an iconic and landmark campus at the Technocity. Chief minister VS Achuthanandan had handed over the government order sanctioning the land at TechnoCity to TCS CEO N Chandrasekharan in September.

Technopark CEO Mervin Alexander said this was the biggest land deed signed in the history of Technopark, and that construction would start within 12 months and was expected to be completed in 48 months. Simultaneously, TCS is expected to commence construction of its development centre at the Technopark Phase-I SEZ.

Officials said the TCS facility would be a benchmark for corporate learning institutions in terms of the physical infrastructure as well as the holistic professional and personal development programs that will be available. The campus infrastructure will include classrooms, auditoriums, computer labs, a library, cafeterias, and accommodation facilities as well as recreational and shopping areas. The campus will be TCS's learning hub and will be connected to all other satellite training facilities across the globe.

TCS has had an association with Technopark since 1994 when the company bought 2 acres of land to set up its corporate training facility and expanded this by acquiring 12 acres more. In 2005 the company took another 26 acres of land for the construction of its development centre, where construction is expected to begin soon.

TechnoCity is being developed over 450 acres in the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram as an integrated township, encompassing IT/ITES infrastructure, residential apartments, shopping malls, hospitals, hotels, educational institutions, and other support facilities. The project is expected to generate 1 lakh direct IT/ITES jobs and another 4 lakh indirect jobs.

As part of its expansion drive and to address the increasing demand of blood bags, the HLL Lifecare Limited (HLL) will be opening its second blood bag plant, Donato Block, at its Akkulam factory. Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad will be inaugurating the new plant on Wednesday.

The new 20,000 square feet state-of-the-art unit will be producing HLL’s new range of blood collection bags under the brand name Donato, which was introduced in the market in October last year. The total project cost for setting up this unit was Rs 20 crore.

The new bags will be specially designed to meet the exacting physical, chemical and biological requirements for safe handling and storage of blood and blood components. The bags will be manufactured in the new facility with minimal human handling.

The bags are being manufactured as per the ISO 3826 standards.

The production of blood bags at Akkulam factory commenced during 1994-95, initially with a semi automatic high frequency welding machine with an installed capacity of 2.5 million bags per year. With this expansion, HLL intends to increase its market share of blood bags both in the domestic as well as global markets.

^^The proposal for a Multiplex was there for some time, before I left Trivandrum, I think it was during 2007 or so. ADLABS (Reliance group) was scouting for space for multiplex, and ‘KRIPA’ theatre was the first option. (They were ready to have a Multiplex in the commercial zone in SFS Cyber Palms.) Regarding Kripa theatre there was some issue regarding ‘permits’and after that it fizzled out. The ADLABS guy used to call me for the space at Cyber Palms. He used to keep in touch with me even after I came to Bangalore . I think if SFS had gone ahead faster with the plans for a Mall, we would have had a 4 screen Mutliplex from BIGCINEMAs by now.

NoRKA plans business centre to promote investments
NoRKA-ROOTS, the field agency of the Non-Resident Keralites Affairs Department, is planning to set up a business centre to serve as a single window facility to promote investments from Non-Resident Keralites (NoRKA).

One floor in the upcoming NoRKA centre at Thycaud in Thiruvananthapuram will be set apart for the business centre. “The project is still in the discussion stage. The idea is to provide services, including financial and legal consultancy, to non-resident Keralites interested in investing in the State,” K.T. Balabhaskaran, Chief Executive Officer, NoRKA-ROOTS, told The Hindu on Monday.

Tie-ups with financial and legal institutions in this connection are also being considered, he said. The construction of the NoRKA centre is expected to be completed by February.

Banks have agreed to fund the Rs 2,500-crore Phase I of the Vizhinjam multi-purpose seaport project. A consortium of banks led by State Bank of Travancore (SBT), with whom the State Government was in talks, has waved the proposal forward. The structure of borrowing also has been finalised, top ports officials said.

The consortium will fund the project through a mix of term loans and institutional bonds. The borrowing will be spread over 12 to 15 years at an interest rate of nine to 9.5 percent, Ports Secretary Sanjeev Kaushik said. The agreement came at a meeting Kaushik had with banks at the headquarters of SBI Capital Markets Ltd in Mumbai last week to finalise the structure of borrowing.

‘’Our next step will be to place the proposal before the board of the Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd (VISL) for approval,’’ Kaushik, who is CEO of VISL, said. The board will meet on January 10.

Other financial agencies such as LIC, HUDCO and Darashaw Securities also have agreed to raise between Rs 750 crore and Rs 1,000 crore. Credit rating agencies Care, Brickwork and ICRA, with whom also discussions were held last week, will rate the bond issue, Kaushik said. ‘’We have prepared the draft information memo on it,’’ he said. Once the VISL board approves the proposal of the banks, the State Government will convene a bankers’ meeting in Thiruvananthapuram to conclude the deal.

It was on November 16 that the Cabinet had given its approval to avail loans from nationalised banks and other financial institutions. Member banks in the consortium include State Bank of India, Dhanlaxmi Bank, South Indian Bank, Federal Bank, Canara Bank, Punjab National Bank and a number of other financial institutions. SBI Capital Markets is functioning as loan arranger. In the first phase, a three-kilometre breakwater and a quay 650 metres long are to be constructed. The breakwater alone will cost Rs 1,000 crore.

This month, the State Government will ink an agreement with Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) for laying railway tracks from the project site to the main line at Balaramapuram, a distance of ten kilometres. On January 10, the Ministry of Environment and Forests will discuss the draft Terms of Reference of the environment and social impact assessment planned for the port.

T’PURAM: The national highways in the state will have a width of 45 metres upon development. An all-party meet convened by Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan convened here this morning took the decision.
The state has formulated a new package as the centre had disapproved the previous one submitted. Briefing reporters after the meeting, VS said the cabinet will discuss about the rehabilitation package very soon.

In the old package, the state had demanded that the centre should bear the expenses of rehabilitation. But in the new package, the state will bear the excess expenses. The centre will provide the necessary market price for land acquisition. CHeers!!!

These "celebrity greens" come out only when a solitary tree or two has to be removed for some development work right next to their homes, so that they can make a quick visit in the comfort of an AC car. I wonder where their righteous indignation is when dozens of acres of forest or mangroves are indiscriminately slaughtered in other places across the State? I guess these armchair activists claim blissful ignorance even when such episodes are well reported in the media.

I am all for the environment too but it is much better to allow development which is coupled with compensatory afforestation, as in the case of TCRIP, than illegal destruction of the environment in the name of supposed development, which has been witnessed in many instances in Kerala in the recent past.

Afforestation is good, but not in the centre of the road.
If Government/ Forest Department aquires a few acres of land and afforest it to create a Park as Cubbon Park or Lal Bagh in Bangalore or as in Green Sectors of Chandigarh,it is highly appreciable.
Let them plant hundreds of trees there.People will support and appreciate them.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Thiruvananthapuram regional milk union of Milma is set for a big expansion in milk production and product range.

Against the backdrop of a surge in demand for milk, the union will increase its processing capacity by one lakh litres per day at its dairy unit at Ambalathara. Which means, the present processing capacity of two lakh litres per day will become three lakh litres per day, in a few months or so. “Though our processing capacity is two lakh litres per day, the demand is for some 2.15 lakh litres, which we are managing by other means. This figure will go up in the coming months. That is why we are starting the work on increasing the processing capacity,” said an official with Thiruvananthapuram union. This expansion work would cost nearly Rs 4.25 crore for Milma.Another ambitious project in the pipeline is the opening of an exclusive milk products dairy unit at the Ambalathara dairy. “This project would cost Milma nearly Rs 5.45 crore. This would probably be the first such exclusive unit for dairy products in the State,” the official said. This plant envisages improving the quality of existing products of the union like curd, ghee, ice cream, butter milk, ‘peda’, flavoured milk and ‘paneer’. Also, once the plant is ready - which would take at least a year - these products would be available in the market in a whole new look.

“Except milk, other products would come with new packing. We will be bringing imported machinery to improve the quality and look of the products. Also, we are planning to launch a few more products in the days to come,” he said.

The foundation stone for the unit would be laid by Union Minister of State for Agriculture K V Thomas at Ambalathara on January 20. State Food and Civil Supplies Minister C Divakaran will also be present at the function.

The union will also start working on a new amenities block for the labourers working at the Ambalathara unit. Nearly 350 people are employed at the unit daily in three shifts. All the above projects are being implemented as part of the silver jubilee celebrations of the Thiruvananthapuram regional union of Milma.

I agree to this - and we have to move forward from this tree-hugging to more sustainable eco-friendliness.

About parks, the Technopark area badly needs one, and there are some scenic areas between Govt College and University Campus in Kariyavattom - A pretty large environmental park could be setup here.

The forest minister finally gets his just dues - Remember the environmental issues he raised while trying to deny IIST land in Trivandrum?

THIRUVANATHAPURAM: It may sound odd. As odd as a cruel butcher rearing a herd of lambs secretly in his house. The Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Limited (TRDCL) and the Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB), dubbed as tree-chopping goons by the greens in the city, are also among the biggest growers of trees here.

Both the TRDCL and the KRFB, responsible for felling more than 250 trees in the city in recent years, have planted more than 3,500 saplings so far. When the KRFB officials planted around 3,000 trees on the compounds of some major institutions, the TRDCL has planted as many as 570 saplings on the sides of roads developed under the City Road Improvement Project (CRIP).

Among the 570 trees planted by the TRDCL, 535 have survived. As many as 470 have attained enough growth. The TRDCL has been assigned with planting 1,232 trees on the roadsides. According to a senior official, saplings have been planted every 15 metres. After the completion of CRIP roads, around 3,000-4,000 trees will line up on the two sides of the roads, he said.

A committee, headed by the then Director of Museums K Raveendran, had shortlisted the variety of trees. As many as 18 species were selected by the committee. The species for each corridor was selected based on guidelines of the Indian Road Congress. Accordingly, separate varieties were selected for corridors belonging to commercial and residential areas.

“If new buildings come up in commercial areas, there will be a tendency to cut big trees. Such problems won’t arise in residential areas. So, trees are planted to suit the area,” TRDCL vice-president Anil Kumar Pandala said.

“Fruit trees are not planted, since fruits falling on road may cause skidding of bikes. Also, trees like ficus, which affects utilities and footpaths, are not used,’’ he said.

But the green initiative of the KRFB faces a threat from electric lines. ‘’The Kowdiar-RR Lamp area has underground electric cables, which is the reason for healthy trees in the area,” Pandala said. Among the trees planted along the CRIP roads, those on the Pettah-Chackai stretch have grown considerably well, he added.

Mayflower, Jacaranda, Tulip tree, Cassia fistula (Kanikkonna), ‘Raja malli’, Lagerstroemia speciosa aka Pride of India, Ilanji, Apple Blossom and Singapore orchid are some of the trees planted by the TRDCL in the city. Along the Sasthamangalam-Vellayambalam stretch, as many as 56 saplings of Bauhinia blakeana (Singapore orchid) have been planted. This is an evergreen tree with purplish red flowers.

Jacaranda has been planted from Asan Square to Pettah. It will have blue flowers. Mahogany trees too were suggested by the committee in areas which lacked too many buildings.

The TRDCL is responsible for taking care of these saplings for the next 15 years. “Some people call us if our workers skip watering. I have received such calls from some headload workers. Some even alert us if somebody destroys these saplings,” Pandala said.

The Airports Authority of India has asked the TRDCL not to plant saplings along the road near the Airport. Except this road, around 5,000 trees will be planted after the completion of CRIP road works. Along with the maintenance of roads, the TRDCL will take care of these trees too.

TRAC submits perspective plan

Thiruvananthapuram: Development of road corridors with parking lots, improvement of tourism infrastructure and water transport facilities, construction of flyovers and pedestrian subways, development of a new domestic terminal at the airport, creation of an electronic hub and IT corridor and upgradation of the educational and health facilities in the capital city are some of the major proposals in the perspective five year plan submitted to the government by the Trivandrum Residents Apex Council (TRAC).

The policy document was presented to Law Minister M. Vijayakumar on Wednesday at a reception given to the new councillors. TRAC general secretary K.T. Roy submitted the document to the Minister.

The report proposes an outer ring road originating at Mangalapuram and passing through Pothencode, Vembayam, Vattapara, Vazhayila, Nettayam, Balaramapuram and Venganoor up to Vizhinjam. It suggests a port-to-port road linking Vizhinjam to Tuticorin. A coastal road connecting Veli, Perumathura, Chirayinkeezh and Anchuthengu is another proposal.

The document highlights the potential of developing the Parvathy Puthanar canal for water transport to tourist destinations like Kovalam and Aakulam.

Construction of pedestrian over-bridges or subways at Statue, Medical College, East Fort and Thampanoor, a flyover from Pattom to Attakulangara to ease traffic congestion on the trunk route, car parking facilities at Statue and Ayurveda College junction, extension of the Sabari rail line to the city via Nedumangad are other recommendations. The document urges the government to take the initiative to launch more domestic and international flights from the city and acquire land for the Airports Authority of India to construct a new domestic terminal. The document calls for establishing an Indian Institute of Technology in the capital city as well as a Language University, Open University, veterinary college and a film institute.

Upgrading the Regional Cancer Centre and Mental Health Centre, Peroorkada as centres of excellence, a total ban on plastics, speedy acquisition of land for sewerage pumping stations, establishment of ward-level garbage treatment plants in the city and separate units for the four municipalities in the district and a National Ayurveda Research Institute and hospital at Neyyar are some of the major proposals made by TRAC to improve the health sector. The report urges the government to initiate discussions with the Defence Ministry to establish a sports centre near the Sainik School.

HD i.e High Definition denotes a high resolution video streaming format. if you notice most LCDs today say they are HD.however to enjoy true HD the TV too should broadcast in HD as is case with DTH. Am not sure if there are movies being made in HD since current film formats have high resolution.
IMAX is a film format patented by IMAX corporation and need special projectors and theatres.
India to the best of my knowledge only had one IMAX theatre at Wadala,Mumbai. The few films that I had seen were a treat to watch (harry porter and some geographic movies). but the problem with this format is it is a locked in technology and very few movies get made in this format. and the ticket prices are very expensive. (rs600 for a harry porter movie 5 years back).
even in Mumbai these prices were not supported and hence after Adlabs was taken over by Reliance, the dome theatre was closed down.
I hope the theatre coming up is not IMAX.

In my knowledge, IMAX Venues are in Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Guwahati, Mumbai, Kaushambi, Kolkata, Jalandhar, Madurai and Kolkata. Kolkata had 3 theaters (Currently only two. One closed down recently).

Prasads IMAX Theater in Hyderabad was the first and largest IMAX venue in India. It has also the biggest IMAX 3D screen in the world.

As Viju said, very few movies get made in this format mainly Hollywood movies. I don't think it is IMAX. It was opened yesterday and was screening film "Chiruthai" (Tamil).

I hope the theatre coming up is not IMAX.

yes u are right viju...IMAX has a resolution 8 times more than that of standard film 2K formats and 10 times of HD formats. Now HD is becoming a standard to home entertainment in many countries. India will be witnessing it soon, once the Indian TV channels broadcasts it. Currently UFO distributes movies in HD to theaters and lacks in quality in big screen. So most theaters prefers QUBE 2K systems now. So what is the pointing of starting a HD theater now.....

The theater is not IMAX. :ohno:

^^But it is Digital HD (accelerated 2k with 2,048 pixels of horizontal resolution).
Another future of the theater was the DTS-HD High Resolution Audio (3 Way 8 channel HD DTS).:dj:

WOW!!!:carrot:

All the pictures look brighter and clearer. They are beautiful too .
The greenery is one thing that adds to the pleasant feeling when we see the pictures.
But I cannot understand why the authorities do not enforce the traffic rules while driving through multilane roads. We see some vehicles using 2 lanes while passing.

Thnks for the photos. Sasthamangalam junction looks great and has changed a lot compared to 5 years ago.

Cheers!!!

Parking problems set to worsen

Absence of a management strategy and lack of space

http://www.hindu.com/2011/01/18/images/2011011863150301.jpg
Clarity yet to emerge:No-parking boards put up on the Vellayambalam-Sasthamangalam road. Local people and traders are against banning parking on the stretch.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even as improvement of several busy road corridors under the 42-km City Road Improvement Project is nearing completion, civic authorities, planners and the traffic police are yet to frame parking management strategies to reduce parking problems.

One such strategy worked out by the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC) for the arterial roads in the city remains in the files. Neither could the City Corporation make much headway, even after years, with its plan to acquire land and convert them into parking lots.

Pay-and-park lots have come up on the central railway station premises, at the second entry of the station on Power House Road, Gandhi Park and Palayam and behind Saphalyam Complex. Barring these and the parking space provided by some shops, regulated parking does not exist on the stretch from Kesavadasapuram to Attakulangara, via RR Lamp and Overbridge. Even worse is the situation on the widened RR Lamp-Vellayambalam-Sasthamangalam and Vellayambalam-Peroorkada stretches.

Opposition

Already, a move to regulate parking on the improved Vellayambalam-Sasthamangalam stretch, which will be commissioned on Tuesday, has come in for opposition from local people and the traders. Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Ltd., the implementing agency of CRIP, has put up no-parking boards on the 1.4-km four-lane stretch.

The parking problems will aggravate on the RR Lamp-Attakulangara stretch once the road development works are completed. From RR Lamp to VJT Hall, the stretch is out of bounds for parking. The only space available is the side of VJT Hall. Medians on the stretch from GPO junction to Overbridge, via Ayurveda College junction, have compounded the problems of those who come to shops and business establishments in motor vehicles. Once the footpath is laid, parking along the roadside will come to an end.

Traffic planners anticipate parking problems on the Kowdiar-Pattom road, which is already turning into a business-and-shopping corridor similar to the Plamood-Kesavadasapuram stretch. Already, the developed carriageway near Kowdiar junction is being used for parking by those who come to restaurants and shops and other business establishments.

Parking policy

Efficient utilisation of existing capacity by providing well-designed on-street parking lots, optimal use of off-street space, improving pedestrian facilities and transportation alternatives, sharing parking space and public and private parking are the parking management strategies proposed by NATPAC.

Reducing parking demand through parking pricing, regulating time of parking and certain vehicles, car pooling and fine-tuning parking requirements are the other strategies.

A NATPAC official told The Hindu that the city urgently needed multi-level parking lots at East Fort, Statue, Palayam and Pattom. The present practice of parking for long hours on the roadside should be curbed by imposing a fee after an initial free period. The money so received should be used for developing and maintaining the parking area and road safety.

He said that in many buildings, the parking lots had been converted into office space and any space remaining was used to leave staff vehicles. The visitors find it difficult to park their cars and two-wheelers. The building rules needed to be re-examined as parking demand was on the rise with more people opting for personalised modes of transport. A time would come soon when flat owners would buy two parking lots each.

Vijayakumar has said.

Speaking after commissioning the 1.4-km Vellayambalam- Sasthamangalam- Sree Ramakrishna Mission Hospital junction corridor developed under the CRIP at a function here on Tuesday, the Minister said the development of the road network in the State capital would be over only after the completion of the second phase.

Already, many busy road corridors in the 42-km stretch of CRIP had been completed. The Kowdiar-Vellayambalam, RR Lamp-Mascot Square, RR Lamp-VJT, Asan Square-General Hospital Junction, Pattoor-Nalumukku, Chakka-All Saints- Sanghumughom-Airport and the underpass at Palayam and flyover at Bakery junction had been completed. Work was nearing completion in Kowdiar-Ambalamukku- Peroorkada, Kowdiar-Pattom, Bakery-Thampanoor and other stretches that were taken up under the CRIP.

Mr. Vijayakumar said the government had decided to commence the tender process in all works related to roads only after the entire land acquisition process was completed.

Camera traps to nab erring motorists in the city, installed at 30 junctions.

This is a good step to nab motorists especially those jumping traffic signals without the patience to wait for the green signal.
BUT. the example shown above :ohno:
Nice road,no traffic and at a speed of 60km/h in a modern car seems okay.
But a speed limit of 35km/h???:bash:
This is not a narrow road for possible pedestrian collision or a school zone.
First implement lane manners, curbing red light jumping and the zigzagging of 2 wheelers,3wheelers,hi-beam usage before implementing speed limits that were formulated in the age of Amby and Padmini with single-carriageways in mind.

EDIT: Details about the phase 2 of CRIP given out yet?

GREAT NEWS

January 22nd, 2011, 11:32 PM
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala that leads the nation in human development indices, literacy and inclusive growth can create a new model for city development, Kris Gopalakrishnan, Managing Director and CEO, Infosys Technologies Ltd., has said.

Delivering a lecture on ‘Sustainable Development Strategies for Thiruvananthapuram' organised jointly by the College of Architecture and the Narayanan and Vaidyanathan Charitable and Educational Trust here on Saturday, Mr. Gopalakrishnan said the new model is centered on where experts are leveraged to create the vision, strategy, and plans; where various stake holders can come together and work together to create a liveable and sustainable city.

Mr. Gopalakrishnan, who is also the Chairman of CII, Southern India, said it is important for all to come together and create a long-term vision for the city. “We also need to preserve certain unique features of Thiruvananthapuram – heritage buildings, water bodies—to make it a liveable, sustainable and great city. We need to preserve these for our children and grandchildren.”

Stating that there are two options – grow or die – for any city, he said if a city does not grow, over time people and businesses start moving out, and ultimately the city dies. In India, there are very few instances of these since the GDP is growing at around 8 to 9 per cent.

With the advent of Technopark here and Technocity in future, the city will continue to grow. Information Technology industry attracts employees to the State capital from all over the country. For every employee added in the IT industry, three to five employees are added in related industries like retail, hospitality, travel and tourism, real estate and transportation.

Discussions were held during the seminar conducted by College of Architecture; to make Trivandrum a Carbon Neutral City.

From The Hindu (http://www.hindu.com/2011/01/24/stories/2011012463750300.htm)
Thiruvananthapuram: Experts participating in a session on sustainable development organised by the College of Architecture here have highlighted the need for strategies aimed at making the city ‘carbon neutral' within three decades.

They called for the constitution of a Metropolitan Planning Commission to coordinate the preparation and implementation of a master plan for the city with private participation. The session stressed on the importance of a decentralised solid waste management system. It recommended the application of green technology for energy and waste management in large projects and campuses in and around the city.

The recommendations approved by the session included a ‘Green cess' to generate revenue for supporting environment-friendly initiatives. It proposes an integrated agency to manage all modes of transport and road networks.

Mass transport system

The discussions focussed on the need for a sustainable and low cost Mass Rapid Transport System for Thiruvananthapuram.

The experts highlighted the need to include adjoining panchayats in the city plan. They suggested isolation of the water reticulation system into different zones for enhancing efficiency and to ease operation and maintenance.

The participants underlined the need to prepare an asset map showing the existing water distribution system of the city.

Water, a prime priority

“Conservation of water should be adopted as a priority, by reducing leakages at the household level and by adopting rationalised pricing based on consumption. Water saving fixtures should be minimum requirement for all new buildings”, they said.

Town planning experts A. Kasturi Rangan, G. Viswanathan and D. Vaidyanathan, water supply and sewerage experts P.S. Rajendra Babu and S. Harris and energy management experts V.K. Damodaran and K. Radhakrishnan took part.

Thiruvananthapuram: The district branch of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Associations of India (CREDAI) has warned that the absence of updated city master plans will stunt the development of urban areas in Kerala.

CREDAI president Roy Peter, secretary general S.N. Reghuchandran Nair and secretary R.Rajesh told mediapersons at an interactive session here recently that the absence of master plans, with zones earmarked for different purposes, would lead to haphazard and unbalanced development.

“The master plan for Thiruvananthapuram is more than 40 years old. This has resulted in unnecessary controls on construction activities. Only an updated master plan with clear land use maps can ensure balanced development. The Chief Town Planner's office, which is responsible for preparing master plans, faces a paucity of experienced hands. The solution is to outsource the plan preparation to an external agency,” Mr. Nair said.

I love this perspective view. Hopefully, the new Tagore Theatre would be also serve as a venue for IFFK, especially in holding discussions and debates. With a large number of international and national cultural programs in the city every month, ranging from dance recitals to rock concerts, it was long overdue that we had a world-class indoor venue.

After an inordinate delay, one of the world's premier marques makes its retail debut in Kerala's Capital. Mercedes-Benz looks to be opening up a showroom on the NH-47/66 at Muttathara close to the International Airport.

Looks like a temporary setup till a more elaborate showroom is set up, perhaps. Once MB had mentioned on its website that Trivandrum had the highest per-capita ownership of Mercs in India. This may have been dented somewhat by the sheer flood of BMWs in the last couple of years, but it looks the top three in the luxury segment are finally setting things right in terms of demand and supply.

Director Aashiq Abu is now shooting his latest Malayalam movie Salt N Pepper in the capital city Thiruvananthapuram. It is his second movie after his debut release Daddy Cool in 2009. It is a masala movie with Lal and Asif Ali in the lead roles. It will also have actors like Shwetha Menon, Baburaj and Mydhili in important supporting roles.

Buzz up!
Family thriller Salt N Pepper is supposed to come with good production values. Syam Pushkaran and Dileesh Nair have written the story of the movie, which is being produced by Lucsam Cinema. Lal Release will be distributing this film, which has lyrics by Rafeek Ahammed and Santhosh Varma.

Malayalee rock band Avial and composer Bijibal have composed the music for the film and Shyju Kahild has done the cinematography. V. Saajan has done the editing of Salt N Pepper, which is set to release in the month of April. Aashiq Abu started shooting the movie on January 3, 2011.

Apart from Aashiq Abu’s movie, director Sunil is also shooting his movie Lucky Jokers in the capital city. It is the production debut of Aascar films Ravichandran in Malayalam. So, these days the capital city is enjoying the glitters of Mollywood stars and will soon be able to see these films on-screen too.

Is this bridge in additioin to the existing road connecting the places just as that built in Jagathy - Poojapura road..?
If so is it meant for one wat traffic?
Thr width 0f 10 M seems too small for 2 way traffic.

^^Kannan, it is just a matter of common sense/observation.

From the photos itself you can see both the new bridge and old bridge. Of course, both of them will become uni directional, two lane. Thus the section will be having a four lane, divided carriageway.

I hope you also know that the road excluding the bridge on either side, Chakka as well as Airport side is four lane, divided. Now the bridge over Pettah Railway station as well as the section near Pattoor Cemetry would be the only two lane undivided carriageway section in the Airport Corridor till the AI Hangar.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The expert committee constituted for preparation of Attukal development plan has proposed a zonal-based infrastructure development plans worth Rs 360.5 crore for the Attukal area, which comprises 18 wards of the city spread over an area of about 40 sq km. This is apart from the already sanctioned projects, costing Rs 118.285 crore, being implemented in the area under various schemes including JNNURM, JICA, CRIP and KSUDP.
The technical and advisory committee approved the priority project report at a meeting held at Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority (TRIDA) and decided to forward it to the State Government seeking budget allocation.
Talking to reporters after the meeting, V Sivankutty MLA said the report would be submitted to Finance Minister Thomas Isaac for allocation of funds for the plan in upcoming budget.
He said the project would be incorporated into the City Development Plan, which is being revised by City Corporation to be presented before the Central Government for the next phase of JNNURM scheme.
The report proposes to implement the development projects in three phases and to set up a parallel township in Attukal zone within the next five years. The priority project requirements identified include widening of roads leading to the temple from Karamana, Kaimanam, Thiruvallam, Karumam and Manacuad. The widening of residential lanes in Attukal, Chalai, Kalady, Kalippankulam and Manacaud wards, which are occupied by women devotees during Attukal Pongala, are also suggested in the report.
The report also proposes improvements of Kaimanam, Manacaud, Thaliyal, Kalady and Attakulangara junctions and setting up of vehicle parking facilities in various junctions. There are proposals for improving water supply distribution system, construction of hospital block in Iranimuttam hospital, extension of sewerage system with sewage pump house near Chiramukku and provision of sidedrains at all major reconstructed roads.
Another major proposal is the renovation of Karamana river and Killiyar and the construction of bunds. The report also proposes a mini fire station and police station in Attukal and redevelopment of East Fort bus station.
According to former Chief Town Planner A Kasturi Rangan, the priority project has been prepared in view of decentralised city development approach. ‘’ The city should be considered as a number of self-contained zones with their own activity centres, residential areas, decentralised commercial zones, social infrastructure and recreational areas. Taking this into account, Attukal zone can be considered as one among such zones of the city," he said.
Sivankutty said that Chief Minister will inaugurate Attukal bridge constructed at a cost of Rs 7 crore on February 13

It's a luxury hotel project. If I remember right, it's being promoted by the owners of a large hotel at Arist Junction. I hope that they will get one of the major chains to operate the property.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Bank of India's first Financial Planning Advisory Services (FPAS) centre started functioning at its SPBB Branch at General Hospital Junction here on Thursday.

Inaugurating the centre, B.S. Bhasin, CGM of SBI Kerala Circle, said the centre was an exclusive vertical of the bank to cater to the requirement of its customers for various financial planning needs.

The centre would provide exclusive services for assessing and determining current financial situation and goals, develop comprehensive plans, monitor progress and re-balance portfolio for its customers.

A.K. Agarwal, general manager, said customers could seek the help of this centre for finding out and implementing strategies for retirement planning, investment plans like buying homes, acquiring other valuable assets, important events (children's education, marriage etc.) and taking proper insurance, among other things.

Trivandrum has a number of stunning residences, including perhaps one of the most expensive in the country. One of our forumers is involved with that project and perhaps could shed some details, if it is not a completely confidential project......

Pradeep, let's not get carried away with the Volvos and the Benzs. At this point, we should be more concerned with function than form, and these buses can probably be effective at their role - moving people. Anyways, the green eyed monster is already making a bead at these buses meant for Trivandrum, so let's be happy that they are going to hit the roads soon! :)

Gentlemen - the current construction is for two of the blocks totaling up to 1 Million SF.

As of now, TP is proceeding with these two with the intent of letting private developers construct space from now on in Phase III and Technocity. The availability of Govt. developed space has actually acted as a damper on private development and in the long term the Government cannot and should not invest in real estate development.

That said, the progress made by L&T on the biggest single building in the State is quite impressive. The civil completion date is August 2011 and work looks to be heading in the right direction. I know that at least one MNC IT firm has already put in an EoI for up to 500,000 SF of space to Technopark.

I think it is my picture only, I had taken it about 5-6 years back, before shifting to Bangalore . I had been on an 'official' visit to Bangalore along with my 'ex' Design Head before finalising the concept of 'SFS CYBER PALMS'. The company is also hoping to induct its supersonic cruise missile into the Indian Air Force and develop hypersonic missile in six years' time, chief executive and managing director A.Sivathanu Pillai told reporters in Chennai.

"The ISRO is developing the cryogenic engine to power its GSLV (geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle) rockets. Once ISRO perfects the technology, we will make the engine as the space agency has asked us to do it." Pillai said. The company's wholly owned subsidiary BrahMos Aerospace Thiruvanthapuram Ltd (BATL) that already makes the liquid fuel powered engines and fuel tanks for rockets will make the cryogenic engine, he added.
