THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Before June, when the schools will re-open and the south west monsoon lashes the city, the new Murinjapalam bridge will be in place, ready for traffic. "The work of the new bridge is going on as per schedule and will be completed within the agreed time frame of 200 days", said officials of the Kerala Road Fund Board (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Kerala-Road-Fund-Board).

The old Murinjapalam bridge, which linked Pattom and Medical College, was demolished in November last year for replacing it with a bigger and stronger one. The closure of the road between Cosmopolitan hospital and Medical College for facilitating the construction work had created much inconvenience to commuters. All the alternate routes, Pattom-Kesavadasapuram-Ulloor, Pottakuzhy-Kannammoola and Pattom-Chalakuzhi are chocked with vehicles following the closure of the Murinjapalam road.

"There has been traffic congestion in the alternative routes since the closure of the bridge. The sooner the work finishes, the better," said Biju T, an autorickshaw driver who commutes in the city. The road closure created a lot of inconvenience to patients heading for the Medical College Hospital, as the easiest route connecting Medical College hospital with different parts of the district is via Murinjapalam.

The construction of the 24 metre long and 19.3 metre wide bridge has been taken by the Thiruvananthapuram Road Company Ltd(TRDCL). When completed, the Rs 4 crore bridge, would facilitate three-lane traffic. The bridge would also have sidewalks on the either side for pedestrians. More than half of the work has already been completed. "We have completed phase two and have entered phase three," said Anilkumar Pandala, vice-president of TRDCL. Works like piling, staging, abutments have been completed so far.

The site is active 24/7 with around 60 construction workers who works in shifts of 25 at a time. "Though there had been a delay of eight days owing to factors like rain, Attukal Pongala and bandhs, we were able to make up for the lag," said Pandala.

Trivandrum: The renovation work at Tagore Theatre is progressing as per schedule. Works at the service room, guest room, elevation of the theatre and two lobby extensions are currently progressing well.

http://yentha.s3.amazonaws.com/contentuploads/6cfbaf06_img_2854.jpg

The ongoing work is the first part of the first phase of renovation works to be carried out. The Rs.10 crore 'civil constructions and allied works' started in November, 2011. The dead line set for for completing the work is 30 April.

http://yentha.s3.amazonaws.com/contentuploads/5648989a_img_2858.jpg

To be specific, the construction of the service room is more or less complete; only the work at the tower room remains pending. The guest room is built to accommodate visiting artists and is about half-way through. The concreting works at the lobby has been completed while the inside of the theatre is undergoing a drastic change. The steps and the stage are being made wider and bigger. The roof is being rebuilt, designed to enhance the sound effects. The elevation works on the theatre is the only remaining major hurdle before the deadline.
http://yentha.s3.amazonaws.com/contentuploads/744a2ef0_img_2852.jpg

The ongoing works constitute only the first part of the first phase of the total renovation works planned. The rest of it would be designed and funded by the Central Ministry. As per information received from the Chief Engineer's office, a Rs. 47 crore plan has been approved and sent from the Centre. However it has not yet been handed over to the architect in charge.

http://yentha.s3.amazonaws.com/contentuploads/72204ddc_img_2865.jpg

The second phase works on the theatre involves multi-storeyed car parking area, landscaping and the lighting of the yards. The third phase consists of setting up of murals of various traditional art forms all around the theatre building.

At least five new shopping centres have opened across India in the last three months. Yet, apart from the noisy roller coaster at Infiniti-2, Malad West (Mumbai), I don’t see much difference between these 2011 centres and those that opened in 2003-2004. This shows that the Indian shopping centre industry has not evolved much.

You may bring a new international apparel brand in your mall, but this is only adding to the already overcrowded apparel and fashion category.

According to early findings of an ongoing retail consumption study being done by Asipac, only 25.8 per cent of modern retail space is required for the broad apparel and fashion category, including eyewear, footwear and accessories – yet, more than 60 per cent of space in Indian malls continues to be dedicated to this category. At Mantri Square mall in Bangalore, Asipac only leased 44.4 per cent space to retailers in this category – perhaps the lowest ratio in the country. At the 4,75,000 square feet Mall of Travancore in Trivandrum, only 41.9 per cent area is provided for apparel & fashion, thus bringing this mall even closer to the actual consumer expenditure patterns.

On the other hand, while the home & CDIT categories put together require 18.7 per cent space, less than one-third of this is actually provided to these important categories – at Mantri Square, Asipac had provided 11.6 per cent, and I find that barring one, all retailers in these categories are doing very well. Realising the need for adequate space for these categories from the latest research study, the upcoming Neomall in South Bangalore looks to provide the required 18.5 per cent space to various home and CDIT formats.

Our study shows that F&B needs 14.8 per cent space – show me one recently opened shopping centre that has provided close to this number. At Mantri Square, Asipac had provided 12.5 per cent space for F&B outlets, which are all doing well; a similar percentage of F&B will be seen at Neomall as well as at Sobha Global Mall in Bangalore. Even at Mall of Travancore, almost 14 per cent space will be dedicated to the F&B category.

What about entertainment? Apart from the almost mandatory multiplex and a forced family entertainment centre, what are Indian shopping centres doing on this front? The research study shows that this category needs 13.4 per cent space. At Mantri Square, we provided 12.3 per cent and the entire category is witnessing fantastic numbers. At Neomall, more than 15 per cent of the area is being dedicated to leisure and entertainment facilities, including some attractions that will be seen for the first time in India. At Mall of Travancore, 12.7 per cent space is being assigned for leisure & entertainment.

Coming back to the apparel and fashion category, the study shows that 73.5 per cent of expenditure on this category in urban India is by people who are value conscious – in other words, they cannot afford brands/retailers of the likes of The Collective, Zara, Debenhams, Mango, Nine West, Promod, Esprit, Ed Hardy, Diesel and Energie.

Yet, I can site new and upcoming centres in Bangalore as examples that have dedicated a large percentage of space to such high-end brands. One of these upcoming malls has one of the most traditional and value conscious area of the city as its primary catchment. Yet the promoter thinks that his mall will succeed if he brings in big international brands.
Another phenomenon that the study confirms is that almost 26 per cent of total expenditure on apparel & fashion (by both genders, including footwear & accessories) in urban India is on Indian wear. But how much space is dedicated to Indian wear in Indian shopping centres?
At Mantri Square, several value brands were brought to occupy 31.2 per cent of the total space dedicated to the apparel & fashion category, yet we were criticised for “downgrading” the malls’s image. The reality is – most of these “value” retailers are doing far better than their counterparts who sell at higher prices. Same is the story with Indian wear – 12.9 per cent of the total space in the apparel & fashion category is occupied by Indian wear, which is the best performing standalone category in the entire mall.
At Brookefields Plaza in Coimbatore, Lifestyle is averaging a turnover of `36 crores per annum from a 38,000 square feet store; while Indian wear department store RmKV is doing 3.5 times the sales from only 20 per cent larger space. This has prompted Bangalore-based Prestige Constructions to get RmKV as one of the anchors at their upcoming Forum Vijaya Mall at Vadapalani, Chennai. At Mall of Travancore in Trivandrum, 28.6 per cent of the total area dedicated for apparel & fashion is reserved for Indian wear.

I expected this comment from you as usual :).Anyway need not worry..these will be removed and the streetlighting along the NH esp on urban areas is the responsibility of the Concessionaire in a BOT project.

I hope that RITES recognizes the fact that Varkala is quickly becoming a satellite city to the Trivandrum metro area and ensures that critical projects like commuter rail connectivity to Trivandrum form the core of new master plan proposal. Varkala can make use of Transit Oriented Development principles to maximize its potential as it sits on two of the most important regional transportation axes, the NH 66 and the Trivandrum-Kollam rail line.

It is TS( Travancore-Shornur) canal.

Was about to say the same thing. Even if the canal is completely restored, I am pretty skeptical about how much of a major traffic arterial it can become. Coastal catamaran ferry services may be a better idea, you can read more here (http://tvmrising.blogspot.com/2012/04/moving-city-mass-transit-future-for.html).

The TS Canal terminates at Vellar and does not extend to Vizhinjam. The stretch beyond Thiruvallam is discontinuous due to siltation and encroachment.

So from Thiruvallam to Vellar, more work required to resurrect the canal and if possible to extend further to kovalam (I guess 1 or 2km away) would boost tourism biz..

So from Thiruvallam to Vellar, more work required to resurrect the canal and if possible to extend further to kovalam (I guess 1 or 2km away) would boost tourism biz..

The silted up section between Thiruvallam and Vellar could be re-opened if the encroachments are cleared. Extending the canal till Kovalam will be a non-starter since the area is already built up and is topographically unfavorable.

It is TS( Travancore-Shornur) canal.

Oops, thanks for the correction... although I don't mind calling it TCS canal if the company takes up a BOT model to develop it at least till Varkala.

MoU will be Signed Today with Infosys for their New Campus in Technocity, Thiruvananthapuram

Posted on 04/04/2012by Thiruvananthapuram

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) for handing over 50 acres of land to IT major Infosys will be signed at Thiruvananthapuram on 4th April 2012 (today) in the presence of Infosys co-chairman Kris Gopalakrishnan.

It is the second land parcel that Infosys is getting near Technopark, Thiruvananthapuram for setting up their own campus. The new land is being allotted in the proposed Technocity project coming up adjacent to the Technopark. The company already has a development centre set up in 50 acres.

According to senior officials in the IT department, the company would be paying a price commensurate to the expenses government incurred for land acquisition. This would come around Rs 1 crore per acre. The agreement would be signed in the presence of CM Oommen Chandy and IT and industries minister P K Kunhalikutty after the weekly cabinet meeting.

As per the SEZ rules, any company that receives land should set up a minimum 10 lakh sq ft built up space in three years. Infosys is learnt to have promised to generate at least 10,000 job opportunities in its new campus. at Technocity.

The expansion activities of the already existing campus would also continue. Technopark authorities have recently completed the land acquisition process for Technocity project and the Union ministry of commerce and industry has accorded SEZ status for 130 acres acquired for the project.

So, The canal is possible now from Vellar/Thiruvallam via TIA till Veli and can be planned as first phase..

There was one 'Theerapatham' project under KSUDP during the last UDF govt for developing and beautifying the stretch frim Kovalam to Veli. 50 m on either side of the Parvathi Puthanar was frozen. IL&FS had done a project report also. Anyway the project was scrapped later.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will lay the foundation stone for the 475-m long, 12-m wide flyover at Mele Pazhavangady across the arterial road to link the Power House road with the Thakaraparambu road on Wednesday.

Three piles of the flyover, near the second entry of the Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station on the Power House Road, measuring between 19 m and 22 m, have already been completed. They had been ‘socketed' one metre into the rock and rock samples have been taken at every level.

The soil tests had revealed the presence of rock below 20 feet, and as a precautionary measure, the authorities have decided to conduct a load test.

To save time, the authorities have decided to complete the work on the remaining 72 piles before the onset of monsoon.

The number of piles of the flyover had been reduced from 83 to 75 and the length brought down from 510 m to 475 metre after a review of the design.

MINOR CHANGES

Following the reduction in length, minor changes have been incorporated in the alignment of the flyover at the starting and finishing points, according to the project officials.

The ramp for the flyover will commence from near the second entry of the Central railway station on the Power House road and near the RKV bus depot on the Thakaraparambu road on the other end.

The Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Ltd. (TRDCL) — the concessionaire of the City Road Improvement Project (CRIP) — is executing the work on the flyover that will have full-length grade separators. In all, there will be 13 spans for the flyover — six spans of 25 m, another six of 30 m and one of 45 m.

WITHIN TWO YEARS

The TRDCL has announced that the sequence of work to be adopted will be different from that adopted for the Bakery flyover. “Work will be expedited after the laying of the foundation stone. The target given to us is to complete the flyover within two years, and we have fixed a target of 22 months, if there are no hitches,” Associate Vice-President, TRDCL, AnilKumar Pandala told The Hindu.

'Metro Rank could spell doom for farming'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The capital might be contesting for a ‘Metro’ rank, but the title could well diminish its paddyfields and let its greens vanish forever. The Local Fund Audit Report of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation for 2010-11 shares the concern and points out that despite rooftop farming receiving a warm welcome in the city, agriculture has, in general, received a setback in the suburbs lately, with none of the agricultural projects meeting their objective.

'Metro Rank could spell doom for farming'

I wonder what the authors of this so-called report were smoking? To even consider large-scale agriculture feasible in a dense, urbanized area is to ignore the obvious. This is the same kind of anachronistic thinking that keeps "green zones" in the middle of the city when they have long since vanished on the ground. High density urban development is the most efficient and sustainable as opposed to sprawl. I wonder why the City Corporation has to be so bothered with promoting farming when its record of delivering basic urban services is absolutely pathetic. Most likely because there is an "agriculture promotion" department in the Corporation, whose survival depends on perpetuating the myth that farms can exist within the core urban area.

Rooftop gardens and other forms of urban farming are fine but to expect any large contiguous extent to be kept apart within the Corporation is to deny the path of progress. Just another outcome of the profound lack of a well developed urban master plan.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: After a wait lasting years, a modern bus station will start operating at Thampanoor by September. In 2004, a proposal was mooted to develop a greenfield bus terminal at Enchakkal for long-distance services and a new terminal at Thampanoor for short-distance services (moffusil).
Developed by Kumar group, the Thampanoor bus terminal is undergoing a complete makeover. The Kerala Transport Development Finance Corporation (KTDFC) is funding the ` 54-crore project.
According to S Sasikumar, chief planner of Kumar Group, the company is making arrangements for operating the bus shelter by September. “We are giving priority to the development of the bus shelter and KSRTC administrative block so that buses can operate from September. It would take another two-three months for the completion of the shopping complex and other facilities,” he said.
The 33,200-square me tre bus terminal will house four basic zones: An arrival bus bay zone; a departure bus bay zone with passenger facilities; a bus terminal supporting facility zone with idle bus parking, repair garage, fuel-filling facility etc; and a commercial zone with a shopping complex and convention centre.
Sasikumar said pedestrian safety has been given due importance in the design. “Unlike the old bus stand, this new bus shelter will have all the facilities for pedestrian safety,” he said.
Sasikumar also said there is ample space for vehicle parking. “As many as 300 vehicles can be parked in the facility provided in the basement of the shopping complex,” he said. Taxi parking facilities too will be arranged.
Traffic segregation is another speciality. There is a separate route for buses (arrival and departure), private vehicles and taxis. There will be 10 arrival bus bays, planned separately on the western side of the departure bay with direct entry from the main road. They can handle the peak hour traffic of 150 buses.
The arrival area is provided with separate parking facilities for two-wheelers and autorickshaws to meet the requirements of arriving passengers.
The first four floors of the commercial block and the central space between the fifth and tenth floors will be reserved for offices. Central escalators are provided for easy access to upper levels. Entrance to the bus station platform is through the mall for better commercial utilisation.

I think , big companies are not intrsted in starting business in trivandrum, because they might be beleiving that it wont be a success in tvm.. So i think we can show intrest towards these companies like multiplex through email... We can tell them to come to this city... Then they may think aboutstarting there business here.... :) :)

Anyone know this building coming up in Museum Jn?

@Abhiani and @Ajaypp

Me too wondered what that building is! The walls are all concrete! If it's part of a stadium, why concrete?? I doubt it's a water tank. If so, that's a dangerous lot of water to be held on top of a building that's occupied. But is it under KWA, I thought it was under the Crime Branch.

No multiplex in Artech.. talked to artech official. Initially they discussed with PVR. But PVR wanted some changes in the design ..also lack of parking space... so they dropped the idea of multiplex in artech.

No need to fret, there are at least three retail/mixed use projects with multiplexes in them in various stages of development. Stay tuned.

Games Village to see a big leap (http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-kerala/article3322571.ece)

The dates of the 35th National Games, to be hosted by Kerala, may yet to be finalised; but the Games are certain to feature a novelty whenever it is conducted.

And this relates to the Games Village to be built in Thiruvananthapuram, the main host-city of the multi-discipline event. Unlike the past Games, which had seen the athletes' village being raised using the conventional brick, mortar, and kiln, the Village in the capital city is to be built utilising pre-fabricated construction technology.

Eco-friendly and cost-effective, the idea to have a Village of this sort was initially mooted in August last, after the National Games Secretariat (NGS) found it disfficult to seal a viable project involving the Kerala State Housing Board and private builders. The idea gained immediate acceptance of the NGS executive which, however, insisted that a few mock units be initially set up in various parts of the city on two counts.

One, to help people get a feel of the new technology and, secondly, to test the viability of the project.

A representative model of a dwelling unit is nearing completion at the Central stadium in the city. The mock unit, say NGS sources, could either be used as the stadium office or as rest rooms during VVIP visits. The unit has been designed to accommodate a mini-conference hall and two rooms, each with its own wash rooms. The advantage of having a Games Village utilising pre-fabricated construction technology is its utility even after the Games. It can be straightaway shifted to other areas and converted to school buildings, sports hostels, police, forests, or fire force camps or pilgrim centres at Sabarimala or Malayatoor, at a nominal cost.

Foreign nationals who work in Technopark would love to have a long association with the city

Technopark is definitely a melting pot of nations. Many foreign nationals have started business ventures, some come on short visits as consultants or trainers, and many others shuttle between their home countries and Technopark. Catching up with a few in the crowd was indeed exciting.
Australian Rob Bisset, head of IT operations at Allianz Cornhill, has a five-year association with the place. Having lived in Delhi and travelled extensively within India, he says: “I found the city interestingly different from other cities I've lived and worked in, with a much slower pace of life that I am still getting used to. Short travelling distances make it an ideal place for striking the right work-life balance. Also, the organisation I work for is a great place to be. There is the advantage of being in a city with a high growth potential and world class organisations for neighbours.” He is married to a Delhiite, Pooja.
Sara Andreis, from Italy, is moved by the respect she gets as a teacher. She teaches Italian at Eteam Informatica India Pvt Ltd. She studied Hindi, spent some months in North India and has worked as an Italian teacher in Rajasthan before coming to Technopark last year. Technopark, to her, looks beautiful amidst coconut trees and greenery. “I like the people I meet here. Also, there are beautiful places to discover in and around Technopark and the city is culturally very interesting,” she says.
Dutch national Oscar Dekkers, managing director of Faes Packaging Solutions Pvt Ltd, still feels he is in a paradise. “Good facilities, highly qualified people, beautiful surroundings, clean air and city… truly God's own country, with all the green palm trees. It was only later that I came to know about the difference between palms and coconut trees as we don't have these trees in the Netherlands!” he says.
Martijn van der Spek is amongst the seniors of the lot. A Dutch national, he came to Technopark in 2001, for, “the combination of skills and costs in the city was unbeatable at that moment. I liked the friendliness of the people and their willingness to help.” Founder and Managing Director of ARS Software Engineering in 2001, he moved on to co-found Sparkling Design and Infotech, last year. “As an outsider, you are at a disadvantage anywhere, but less so here, where everyone tried to make me feel welcome,” says Martjin.
M.Vasudevan, Senior Manager, Business Development, still remembers Technopark's initial trysts with foreigners. “A Swiss couple had come down evincing interest. We received them personally at the airport. They started a company, Health Informatics, which functioned for five years,” he says. He also speaks about Toroid India (now taken over by a Belgian firm) run by K.J.Westman from Sweden in the Nila building, which, at that time didn't have a proper approach road or lifts. “They insisted on having the office on the sixth floor, since that gave them a great view of the place,” he says.
A major attraction for all the foreigners has been the tourism factor. Now that Technopark has established cross-continental incubation between the Technopark Technology Business Incubator (T-TBI) and incubators in other countries, the foreign presence is getting bigger.
Bonding in a big way
All of them would like to stay on, in spite of the drawbacks. Rob definitely would like to see some improvement in housing, food and entertainment, but finds a definite improvement in shopping options. Sara finds that everyone is “concentrated on their job and earning money and there is little space for social life, on the campus. People here, especially women, prefer to spend free time at home with their family. There are less opportunities for entertainment, going out, playing games, bicycling...” But she has got used to the food, the climate, likes anything that is vegetarian, and plans to stay for a longer period.
Oscar has had problems with the traffic. He says: “It feels like a jungle with mosquitoes (bikes) and bees (autos) and elephants (buses) and an occasional real elephant, which doesn't have lights at night.” But neither he nor his Indian wife, Vandana, has any intention of leaving the place, now that they have a new-born baby boy, Leon. “We like the weather, the food, excellent colleagues and the growing group of friends. We feel at home.”
Martijn, who lives with wife, Esther, and six-year-old daughter, Anna, has already purchased two properties in the city and his parents live here in their own house six months a year. “Our daughter speaks Malayalam now and will teach us eventually!” he says.

I think he might have referred Volkswagen apart from Mercedes, considering the fact that BMW just started building their showroom and service.

Mercedes has just a small sort of "booking office" with a couple of models being displayed. I see the possibility of them setting up a bigger one or maybe expanding their current one.

If JLR come up with a showroom in one of the buildings in pattom, how are they gonna take care of servicing..? Or is it going to be just a showroom like the current Mercedes one.? (I know its too early to ask this question, but just popped in my mind)

By the way Volvo is Swedish. It aint German.

AFAIK Merc has a full fledged 3S showroom here, even though it is a small one. They just can't ignore a city which has a 25% share in the State's luxury car market

Bmw is well on the way.
Service centers are not inside the showrooms they're either in the same plot or could be away from it. It depends on land availability.

E&Y to open its second facility in Trivandrum, at Kinfra Park

Thiruvananthapuram, April 21 (IANS) Ernst & Young (E&Y) Global Shared Services (GSS) plans to expand its facilities at the state-owned KINFRA Film and Video Park near here. The firm has been allocated 60,000 square feet of built-up area.

Opening a third facility for GSS Kerala is important to Ernst & Young's strategy, said Tim Eddy, global vice chair of E&Y Global Services, after the firm signed a memoram of understanding with Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation here Saturday.

'We already have highly-skilled professionals in our Kerala Center, providing key services to the organisation. This new facility will serve our growth needs well, enabling us to expand to meet the increasing demand for our services,' said Eddy.

KINFRA was smart enough to widen the scope of its SEZ by adding IT along with the Gaming & Animation profile . Being located between Technopark & Technocity along with facilities like Business Centre, Hotels , Banks, Guest House & 1Lakh square feet built up space in a 25 acre SEZ makes it an ideal spot for IT companies looking for space & the land is sufficient for more IT parks to come up . As far as film city and related developments are concerned there is ample land with KSFDC @ Thiruvallam.

I wish KSIDCO too follow the same for its 25 acre Telecom City project (which is nowhere now ), the location of which is nearby Technopark .
Since the ROB will soon come up - access to menamkulam is not going to be an issue.

Ernst & Young GSS to set up their third centre in Trivandrum Kinfra SEZ

Tvm: Ernst & Young Global Shared Services (GSS) has announced their third centre in Kerala at the Kinfra Film & Video Park Special Economic Zone at Kazhakuttam in Thiruvananthapuram. This will be their fourth facility in Kerala with two in Technopark, Trivandrum (Gayatri & Tejaswani) and one in Infopark, Kochi (Athulya). The MoU for the new centre was signed between Tim Eddy, Global Vice Chair, EY Global Services and S Ramnath, Managing Director, KINFRA in Trivandrum today.

Interacting with the media, Tim said, “It has been a great journey for us in Kerala and today GSS Kerala has 1,254 highly skilled professionals and we would like to double this figure in a not too distant future. The new centre spread over 60,000 sq. ft. would seat about 800 professionals.”

Binu Koshy, Leader, GSS Kerala said, “We are happy with the excellent infrastructure here and the new space substantially increases the size of our facilities, allowing us to respond to growing demands for our shared services from our customers worldwide. This would give more opportunities for the people of Kerala to work in a company like EY.”

Minister for Industries & IT, Shri P K Kunhalikutty said that EY setting up their third centre in Kerala was a sign of prosperity for Kerala. Ramnath commented that it’s a great start to the Emerging Kerala campaign as this announcement comes just a day after the launch of the campaign.

P H Kurian IAS, Principal Secretary (IT); Mala Garg, GSS CBS Global Leader and Deepak Swaroop, GSS CBS Global Service Delivery Leader were among those present.

Set in a beautifully landscaped area of 75 acres of land, the Kinfra Film &Video Park is a fully owned subsidiary company of the Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KINFRA). The Kinfra SEZ was initially notified for IT - Animation & Gaming in 2007 but recently Kinfra had obtained SEZ approval for IT / ITeS.

So a competitor for Technopark from Trivandrum itself - Kinfra IT SEZ

Lol, I wouldn't consider VW exactly a luxury brand. :)

R8?? Niiice!

Definitely VW aint a luxury brand..I was just pointing out the german makes...because of that image, they are facing a lot of issues with the cliched model "Phaeton" of being a people's car, which is in paar or maybe even better than A8, S and 7 series in terms of luxury.

(I hope everyone knows the fact that Audi is owned by VW. google up for VW and be surprised to know the subsidiary companies being owned by V.W)

About 1000 acres all told! Eventually, perhaps by 2018 or so, we will have upwards of 50 Million SF of business space, and at least 300,000 direct jobs in this area.

Nothing remotely of the same caliber anywhere else in Kerala, yet this Government and much of the media still cannot find the trees in the forest!

Btw, TP Phase II is closer to Aakulam and Phase III closer to Kulathur.

NIIST sets up India's First Biofuel Facility

Thiruvananthapuram, April 20:

The biotechnology division of the National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST) here has set up a Centre for Biofuels. It will be a nodal centre for research in the field, a spokesman for NIIST said here on Friday.

The centre will also serve as a national facility for exclusive research and development activities in the larger area of bioenergy. It is already involved in research on developing alternative renewable transportation fuels such as bioethanol and biodiesel, the spokesman said.

An 80 kg/batch-capacity pilot plant for ethanol production from biomass including agro-residues and forestry byproducts has been set-up in the NIIST campus.:banana:

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Come Wednesday and Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will lay the foundation stone for the Kariavattom outdoor stadium, the proposed venue for the opening/closing ceremony of the 35th National Games. The Chief Minister will lay the foundation stone at 4.30 pm on the day at Kariavattom.
Sports Minister K B Ganesh Kumar and officials concerned will attend the function. The event will be a major milestone in the preparations for the 35th National Games to be hosted by the State. The proposed stadium will come up on 37 acres of land belonging to the University of Kerala.
The Kerala University has lent the 37 acres to Kariavattom Sports Facilities Limited, a special-purpose vehicle fully owned by IL&FS Transportation Network Limited. The land was given on lease for 30 years. The construction of the greenfield stadium is expected to be completed in two years.

The first stadium in the country to be developed on DBOT (Design-build-operate- transfer) basis, the facility would have the capacity to seat 50,000 people. The rough estimate of the project is Rs 160 crore.
The stadium is designed in such a way that it could be used for football and cricket. It is designed as a self-sustaining model, having a convention centre, exhibition hall, restaurant, club house, swimming pools, indoor games facilities, retail space etc.
Though the work was awarded to IL&FS in September last year, delay in forming a consensus on the lease amount by Kerala University lagged the works. Finally, National Games Secretariat, IL&FS and the University signed a concession agreement on April 4, paving way for the development of the stadium.

Thiruvananthapuram – Kanyakumari BG Section will be Energised Soon (http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-tamilnadu/article3366585.ece)
A top CORE official said electrification of 530 route kilometres was currently underway in various sections in Tamil Nadu. The official said the Dindigul – Madurai and Thiruvananthapuram – Kanyakumari BG sections had been accorded top priority and would be energised shortly.

Joint checks were being carried out in the Madurai – Tuticorin and Tirunelveli – Nagercoil sections which are expected to be energised before this financial year.

Electrification up to Kanyakumari would pave the way for operation of end-to-end express trains hauled by electric locomotives in the Chennai – Kanyakumari trunk route via Tiruchi without a loco change midway.

In the Chennai – Tiruchi – Kanyakumari trunk route, the section from Chennai to Dindigul has already been electrified.

The official said electrification works in the Villupuram – Vellore BG section is expected to be completed in the current fiscal.
Electrification works are in progress in Madurai-Thirunelveli-Nagercoil section.Once this also completed Trivandrum will have Fully Electrified Lines in both directions viz; Palakkad & Madurai/Trichy to connect Chennai. ;)

Great news, Ajith, this will be crucial in establishing connectivity with the secondary and tertiary hinterland for the Vizhinjam deep-water port. The highly congested Trivandrum-Palakkad section is unlikely to be able to handle the traffic generated by India's deepest port and container terminal. The Trivandrum-Nagercoil-Madurai-Trichy line is much less congested and should be able to accommodate a lot of container traffic to and from destinations as far away as Chennai and Bangalore.

All this points to the need for upgradation of rail infrastructure in Kerala, but since bullet trains are the current flavor of the month, it's unlikely that much will happen anytime soon. Thankfully, developments on the other route and on the other side of the border are proceeding in a much more pragmatic and quick manner.

Then parking can be systematic..Instead of inclined parking, it shall be parallel parking, and also not on the footpath.

Currently there is no alternative. Once we get more parking spaces and MLCPs this issue can be solved. ^^

Nice snaps Viveks..

True even when there are six lanes, in effect only two lanes for driving available due to parking.

Actually instead of dotted white line for left most lane, solid yellow line would be more apt indicating space for parking..

And true Tvm badly needs parking spaces within city limits off the road and multi storey parking planned seems still on paper only..

Thiruvananthapuram’s masterplan for 2031 to be drafted by May (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/thiruvananthapuram/Thiruvananthapurams-masterplan-for-2031-to-be-drafted-by-May/articleshow/12917271.cms)

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The sector-wise analysis report for the preparation of city's master plan-2031 will be drafted by the end of May. The corporation has directed all its working groups to come up with reports focusing on diverse sectors which will be incorporated in the master plan.

"These reports will be subject to expert views and comments. We have to speed up the preparation of master plan and there won't be any change in the deadline. All the responsible councillors will have to work together with the concerned officials," said deputy mayor G Happy Kumar.

The corporation had on Friday organized a workshop on the master plan. Various departments carried out presentations on social forestry, animal husbandry and e-governance. "We need to hold two more workshops before we can start working on the draft of master plan," said a town planning official.

In November 2011, corporation had organized another workshop in which presentations were held on land use pattern and disaster management. Meanwhile, the councillors have been reportedly lagging on the preparation of working group proposals for the master plan.

After the first workshop on master plan, all the councillors were asked to submit their proposals within two months. "There has been a general slackness on the part of the councillors. There is lack of interest and purpose which has to be soon addressed," said an official.

The corporation had earlier planned to prepare the draft of the master plan in the beginning of this year.

The Thiruvananthapuram master plan 2031 will centered on city's development pattern for the next 20 years. It will lay emphasis on the land use pattern, traffic and transportation, infrastructure, solid waste management and sanitation, disaster management, risk reduction strategies and identification of hazard prone areas which will be revised every five years
