View Full Version : Marriot Marquis Hotel, New York City

Agglomeration
December 12th, 2003, 07:05 AM
Name: Marriot Marquis Hotel (New York City)

Height and Floors: 575 feet, 50 floors. Rooms: 2,003, including 56 suites

Style and Year of Completion: 1985 (Post-Modern)

Architect: John C Portman and Associates

Summary: Built in what was then the unsavory Times Square, the Marriot Marquis was built with an unusual design. Its main facade is a set of twin concrete pillars with hotel windows in between. Despite its grayish appearance, The Marquis has a 14th-floor lobby with a beautiful 34-floor atrium where guests can stare down from the floors above. The floors above are set to different distances from the main shaft. At the base of the monolith is the Marquis Theater, a parking lot, and a cinema. There is also a large revolving restaurant on the rooftop.

Nothing aesthetically pleasing on the outside.

The outside is barely visible from Times Square. You just see a sign, and thats the entrance.

This building is poorly poorly designed inside and out. It's a prison. Even the elevator is a joke, and you can't access the meeting floors properly...you have to take various escalators. But it's all okay, because they designed this to keep pan-handlers out. They should all be ashamed.

Oh, and a 34 storey atrium for a hotel? NOT SAFE...I've always hated seeing drunks come back to their rooms late at night and lean over for a look. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid building.

5/10...This is a monster, only a place like Times Square can have a building like this and make it sort of fit in and look half decent. The atrium inside is pretty cool.

9/10 I like it but is this post-modern? If so than is it the first PoMo building i really like.

The style, as defined by skyscrapers.com, is actually brutalist, because of the use of concrete on the exterior. While this is technically true, all the bright neon signs on the exterior make the building feel more like its main construction material is not concrete, but rather neon and billboards.

The hotel costs around $500 a night. I didn't stay there, but I went in last week when I was visiting NY. I saw the Duke Basketball team there. Appparently they were staying there. Now I know where my tuition money goes!

Service Lift Attendant, you're right that the hotel is a little confusing once you enter from Times Square. From there you have to take elevators or escalators maybe 5 or 6 floors up to get to the floor of the atrium. From there, though, I find it very easy to navagate.

As for safety, the only deaths the hotel has had from falling are suicides. As you can see here (http://www.wirednewyork.com/hotels/marriott_marquis/images/marriott_marquis_45floor.jpg), there are guard rails. So, you'd have to be trying to jump, or at least incredibly stupid, to fall over the edge. Note that the Empire State Building has the same system, at least when I was there.

Anyway, although this is one of the tallest atriums in the world, few people would survive a fall from even a 20-story drop, which means the many Embassy Suites hotels are all just as unsafe.

I would have classified it as post-modern. Post-modern doesn't necessarily translate as deco-inspired turrets or Italian-esque columns. The mass of tiled walls ala Japanese architect Tange, doesn't necessarily make it brutalist either.

But style is a funny thing as it can twist and turn at all points. Whatever it is, it's certainly making a statement.

The atrium is of course fantastic but not that unique esp. for a Portman.

I can see it sitting comfortably in Tokyo or Yokohama. Then again, why not N.Y.C.?

If it were all sheer glass with those forms, wow-a-zee!! But it's not.
