ELECTRIFIED DOUBLE TRACK BETWEEN SENTUL AND BATU CAVES (7.2 km)
Extension on track
Saturday November 18, 2006 By LAI CHOR WENG TheStar

THE much-awaited Sentul-Batu Caves extension of the KTM Komuter system will be completed by May 2009.

KTM Bhd managing director Datuk Mohd Salleh Abdullah said the project site was handed over to contractor YTL Corporation Bhd last Friday.

“The time for completion is 30 months from the date of site possession,” he said after KTMB's Hari Raya open house at its workshop in Sentul on Thursday.

The extension, which will cost RM515mil, will enable the Port Klang-Sentul commuter train service to be extended another 7.2km to Batu Caves.

New stations will be constructed at Sentul, Batu Cantonment, Batu Village, Taman Wahyu and Batu Caves.

The project will also involve the construction of a second track, electrification and signalling.

Mohd Salleh also said the KTM workshop in Batu Gajah would be completed in 33 months.

He said the 161ha site, which would contain a workshop, depot, training centre and quarters, was handed over to the contractor on Nov 8.

The RM410mil project was awarded to Road Builder (Malaysia) Bhd.

In his welcome speech, Mohd Salleh thanked KTM staff who willingly sacrificed Hari Raya and Deepavali to keep the trains running.

Present at the Hari Raya do were KTMB chairman Tan Sri Lim Ah Lek, board members, KTMB senior management, as well as current and former KTMB staff.

Global Rail to invest RM30m in staff training
By Sharen Kaur
Published: 2008/12/29

RAILWAY engineering firm, Global Rail Sdn Bhd, aims to invest an initial RM30 million to train skilled personnel for the country's railway sector.

It intends to work with the government to train specialist engineers at the soon-to-open RM120 million railway training centre in Batu Gajah, Perak, its managing director Fan Boon Heng said.

The centre, to start operations next month, was built for national railway firm KTM Bhd, and features a school, hostel and railway quarters.

The centre forms part of the RM380 million Batu Gajah workshop and Electrical Multiple Units Depot project that is being built by Road Builder (M) Sdn Bhd and Fajar Baru Capital Bhd.

The idea is to have a dedicated centre to undertake major maintenance and overhaul of KTM's rolling stock, and to manufacture locally-assembled wagons and coaches, which are now mostly imported from Europe..

"There is a lack of local expertise in the railway sector. We are working out a conceptual proposal to submit to the government by next March. We also hope to work with KTMB to upgrade the centre into a Railway Institute," Fan told Business Times. Part of the RM30 million investment is to invest on the required facilities, equipment and machinery for railway construction works, he added.

It will collaborate with foreign firms like Siemens, Invensys Rail, Bombardier Transportation and others, on the transfer of technology to develop capabilities to lead the railway system works.

Global Rail plans to partner China Infraglobe Consortium, a global infrastructure development and logistics specialist, to invest on railway infrastructure, linking the economic corridors in Peninsular Malaysia.

"The initial plan is to link down south from Gemas to Johor Baru and within Iskandar Malaysia. It will involve huge investments but the idea is to come in on Private Finance Initiative," Fan said.

Global Rail, set up in July last year, was founded by Fan, who previously headed ABB Daimler-Benz Transportation and later Balfour Beatty Rail Sdn Bhd for over 15 years.

It has in hand RM25 million worth of jobs from Road Builder for electrification for the Batu Gajah project, and from YTL Corp Bhd, to supply automatic train protection system and railway point machines for its Sentul-Batu Caves railway project.

Batu Cave traders agree on compensation
Friday January 30, 2009

EIGHT traders who were operating their business on a land that Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) acquired for its KTM Komuter Sentul-Batu Caves extension have agreed on the amount for compensation.

According to Batu Caves assemblyman Amiruddin Shari, who accompanied the traders to finalise the details at the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) recently, the traders do not have a place to conduct business until the extension project is completed.

According to a KTMB spokesman the extension project is expected to be completed by May barring any unavoidable circumstances.

“Meanwhile, the council will make sure that the shops are built for the traders but of course it would take about six months,” the spokesman said, adding that KTMB had also given notice to the traders to vacate their shops by Feb 28.

According to Amiruddin the extension is expected to ease traffic congestion especially during the Thaipusam festival in 2010.

“We don’t want to announce the amount of the compensation because it is a very sensitive subject but suffice to say the traders are happy with it,” Shari said.

“Since the traders have been doing business here for more than 40 years and will not be able to do business for almost a year, it’s only right that they are compensated,” Amiruddin said.

Taman Eastern folk and the authorities find solutions to flood woes
Saturday February 14, 2009
By PRIYA MENON

RESIDENTS of Taman Eastern in Jalan Ipoh are happy with the prompt response from the authorities to solve their flood woes.

It was reported recently that the residents were facing floods after 30 years due to construction work on the new Batu Cantonment commuter station that started in 2007.

The residents also feared that other problems would surface once the station was operational.

Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and the contractor met the residents on Tuesday to discuss the problems and find a solution.

The representatives from each group agreed to solve the most pressing problem which is the drainage system that is causing the floods.

“The drains are most probably clogged so the first thing that we have to do is ensure that there are enough outlets,” said a representative from DBKL’s river and drainage department, Shabuddin Mohammad Salleh.

He added that DBKL would ensure that the main outlet maintained by them was checked and cleaned regularly.

Shabuddin also said DBKL would monitor the construction work closely to ensure that similar incidences did not occur.

The contractors, Sentul Raya Sdn Bhd, said the higher water level in Sungai Batu during rainy days most probably caused the water to flow into the drains and hence causing the floods.

A representative of the contractors said they would clear the drains and begin work to ensure that the drainage system was improved within a month.

KTMB’s project department engineer Mohd Pesol said they would work together with the contractors to fix the drainage system which involved realigning the drains.

As for complaints like the sound pollution due to passing trains, KTMB said they had taken measures to ensure that the sound produced by the trains were absorbed by the tracks.

“We will also decide on the type of material to be used for the fencing to block the residents view of the station soon,” Pesol said.

The residents said they were happy with the initiatives taken by the authorities.

“We want to expedite the process but since the station will only be completed in March 2010, we will have to bear with it,” said resident Yap Keng Teck,36.

I 1000% agree but why just to batu caves !!!When selayang is just a little bit just down the the road??the former transport minister did talk about an extension to the Selayang hospital...which suggests that KTMB and the Transport Ministry have thought about it.

But Chan Kong Choy had a service centre in Selayang (iirc) so he was obviously pushing for it as MP and Minister of Transport.

I dont think the current Selayang MP and ADUN and council have much information or have even thought about the possibility about the extension.

Im going to write a letter to the transport ministry and KTMB to encourage them to have the Batu Caves project complete (soft launch at least) before Thaipusam 2010. I will mention the Selayang extension as well.

Thursday December 17, 2009

PETALING JAYA: The Sentul Komuter station will be closed from tomorrow until Sunday to facilitate end-stage works on the Sentul-Batu Caves double-tracking project.

As such, the KTM Komuter service for the Port Klang-Sentul route will only be operational between the Port Klang-Kuala Lumpur sector, KTM Bhd (KTMB) said in a statement yesterday.

A shuttle bus service with a 15-minute frequency will be provided between Kuala Lumpur and Sentul in the meantime, the statement said.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused to commuters using this route during this time.

“For further information, please contact the KTMB call centre at 03-2267-1200,” the statement said.

The YTL development in the area. Its part of the Sentul East, Sentul West plan. The Komuter station will be the central hub for Sentul with the Ampang LRT line station as a secondary hub on the eastern side. Therefore I guess they are calling it the Sentul Integrated (Township) Station.

I guess Sentul Integrated will be just like KL Monorail's 'KL Sentral' station and the future 'seamless connections' between KL Monorail, LRT, KTM and the new line....

A nice name only. :ohno:

Cheers, m

ps. the Sentul Station on the Ampang line should be called Sentul South....to avoid confusion with the existing Sentul and Sentul Timur.

pps. just for the heck of it, who wants to start referring to Sentul "Integrated" station, the Central Hub, as Sentul Sentral?
Indeed a nice name. I'm thinking YTL wanted it to sound grand so they could sell more property in their developments. It does help to sell the place better. Near Sentul Integrated Station! Of course hearing its near public transport would hike the interest, but blasting them with bombastic words would further fuel that.

Multi-billion ringgit Sentul Raya masterplan: YTL Land confident of making project a success
Business Times (Malaysia), 17 April 2002

http://www.ytlcommunity.com/common/showimage.asp?imgid=2994

April 17. YTL LAND & Development Bhd has unveiled their masterplan to redevelop Sentul Raya, a multi-billion ringgit project which had been stalled since the 1997/98 Asian financial crisis.

YTL Land managing director Tan Sri Francis Yeoh said the development would span eight years, but he declined to provide the estimated sales value of the 118ha project except that it is "eight times higher than our Pantai Hillpark project." Some analysts put the figure at about RM5 billion to RM6 billion.

"It runs into billions of ringgit, of course. About RM6 billion," said an unnamed official from YTL Land.

When the project was launched in 1995, it was tagged at about RM1.3 billion.

Yeoh however said the company was confident that it would deliver its best to develop the 118ha land into "something really beautiful and valuable".

"When we first took over the project (from Taiping Consolidated Bhd), it looked awesomely difficult to revive.

"But we are never afraid to take a project that we know can be turned into something beautiful," said Yeoh as he briefed reporters on the city's largest integrated urban renewal project, citing the group's success in making Pangkor Laut Resort, Bintang Walk and Pantai Hillpark what they are today.

The development will be divided into two unique but distinctive areas. Sentul East (43ha) will showcase the Malaysian flavours and Sentul West (74ha) will have exclusive residences and lakes and a private park.

The project kicks off next month, with the launch of Sentul East's "Tamarind" apartments. The units will be priced from RM200,000 each, said Yeoh.

YTL Land deputy managing director Datuk Victor Yeoh told NST Business that one condominium block, which was already constructed before the whole development was shelved, would be ready for completion in September.

"We have given the buyers a 15 per cent discount, to compensate them for the late delivery of their properties," he said, adding that any grouses and complaints the buyers had before had been resolved amicably.

"No legal action against us ... all have been resolved," he said.

Earlier, Francis Yeoh said those buyers who had expressed their disappointment that the nine-hole golf course — part of the original Sentul Raya masterplan — was to be turned into a park modelled after St James Park in London are "no longer disgruntled. They are now even willing to put money into this new development".

"We understand that properties near a golf course are valuable but what about homes around a 12ha park? And we are talking about Malaysia's first private gated park, exclusively for residents?" asked Yeoh.

He cited the "valuable properties" surrounding London's Hyde Park and New York's Central Park, saying that the "rare green lung in Sentul West" would naturally raise the standard of the residents of the 4,000 condo units surrounding the park.

50 per cent off KTM monthly passes
T.K. LETCHUMY TAMBOO

KUALA LUMPUR: KTM Komuter users will now no longer complain about the prices of its daily and monthly passes.

Starting next month, KTM Bhd will reduce prices in a move to encourage more members of the public to use public transport. Next month, commuters can enjoy 50 per cent off their monthly passes.

After that, the monthly passes will be sold at 33 per cent less. February will also see commuters enjoying unlimited travel to all 27 KTM stations as the daily pass will retail at RM10 for adults and RM5 for children (age 4-12). From March, it will be RM12 and RM6 respectively.

The new and colour ful KTM Komuter daily and monthly passes were launched this morning at KL Sentral by KTM Bhd president Dr Aminuddin Adnan.

"The reintroduction of the two passes is to replace KTM Bhd's monthly and tourist passes which were introduced in 2007 in conjunction with the Visit Malaysia Year and the 50th Merdeka celebrations," he said.

Dr Aminuddin said for the upcoming Thaipusam celebration, KTM Komuter will extend its services to cater for the larger crowd. There will be 208 special trains running between KL Sentral and Batu Caves daily from Jan 29 to 31.

Dr Aminuddin added KTM Bhd will be expanding its operations to include 38 more electrical multiple unit (EMU) trains to the present 26 by 2012. It is also in the midst of upgrading 15 EMUs.

"We have also reduced the waiting time at each station from 20 minutes to 15. We plan to further reduce the waiting time to 10 minutes," said Dr Aminuddin.

The KTM Komuter station at KL Sentral caters to 94,000 passengers daily and is expected to be increased to 100,000 by year-end.

Dr Aminuddin also said KTM Bhd will choose 30 random lucky monthly pass users every month until June to reward them with special gifts. The promotion is meant to encourage the public to use monthly passes.

Members of the public may buy the monthly pass between the 26th of the month to the seventh of the following month to enjoy its benefits.

If KTM had more trains the frequency might be quite decent.

Given that there are 3 platforms at Batu Caves (not sure where the switches are) it should be easy to load and unload passengers.

KTM needs to do a lot to promote this...having the info in the media isnt enough. They should highlight it with roadshows at KL Sentral station, information on all platforms, etc.

Only Sentul and Batu Caves has three tracks along the station.

The rest in between Sentul and Batu Caves are all two tracks.

I don't think the provision of third track in Batu Caves has to do with passenger, this is because in Batu Caves, you can access trains from the two tracks, not the third. The third is for some trains (usually not passenger train) to a yard behind the Batu Caves station.

They are actually nearer to the Peninsula and East Malaysia than the distance between the former and the latter.. Yet, they belong to Indonesia which is further away.

An iconic train station for Sentul
Monday May 10, 2010
By PRIYA MENON Photos by ONG SOON HIN

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2010/5/10/central/m_pg07sentul.jpg

Futuristic: A view of the aerodynamic roof
of the newlyrefurbished Sentul KTM station.

THE Sentul Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) station will be sporting a chic new look next month.

YTL Corporation Berhad deputy managing director Datuk Yeoh Seok Kian unveiled the station’s new amenities in an exclusive interview with StarMetro recently.

The most impressive feature of the Sentul KTM station is its futuristic aerodynamic roof.

“The first thing you will see when you head into Sentul is the station so we wanted to make it iconic. It is one of the first transformations in the area,” said Yeoh.

The refurbishment also spells good news for the disabled community as it will cater to their needs.

The station not only sports disabled-friendly ramps, escalators and lifts but also tact tiles for the blind. All these will ease their worries about getting lost or needing assistance.

The original Sentul train station, built in the 1900s, was used as a central workshop and depot for the (Federated Malay States).

It was upgraded under the 6th Malaysia Plan (1990-1995) to accommodate the KTM Komuter services and a link with the newly-built KL Sentral station.

Despite the improved train services provided by the double tracks, it sorely lacked features associated with a modern train station.

However, since Sentul Raya Berhad (a collaboration between KTMB and YTL) stepped in to build the new station, all these problems have been addressed.

It is now an integral link to the new Sentul-Batu Caves Electrified Double Tracking project.

Work on the station began in February 2009 at a cost of RM21mil while the entire line from Sentul to Batu Caves cost RM551mil.

Situated in the heart of Sentul, the station which sits on 6.6 acres of land will soon sport bridges connecting Sentul East and Sentul West.

“This will allow residents to use the link bridges to cross over from both Sentul East and West at their convenience,” said Yeoh.

The link bridges located on the upper concourse shares a space with the ticketing kiosks previously located on the ground floor.

There will also be retail kiosks, a cafeteria, a VIP room, crew rooms on the ground floor as well as public washrooms for commuters.

“We have also ensured designated drop off areas for buses and taxis along the station.

“This will ensure there is no traffic congestion along Jalan Perhentian and the Jalan Haji Salleh loop road,” he added.

The architects and engineers have made the station sustainable in the long run, incorporating environmental concepts like skylight and cross ventilation.

“The new station and project was designed to celebrate rail travel. It was built for the people of Sentul, the less affluent and the more affluent,” he added.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2010/5/10/central/m_pg07tact.jpg

Leading the way: The tact tiles for the
visually-impaired is a new addition to the station.

For Yeoh, however, the most important feature is the hassle-free journey to Jalan Ipoh and Batu Caves.

He said the ridership would increase from 700 to 800 passengers per day to an estimated 3,400 per day.

“There are 620,970 residents in a 5km radius and they will all benefit from the new train line.

“We have built four pedestrian bridges along the new 7.5km double- tracking project to Batu Caves and five elevated roads over rail bridges,” he said.

Yeoh said once the station and the Sentul-Batu Caves line were completed it would be a hub for the future Sentul.

KTM Komuter to serve Sentul-Batu Caves route from July
Wednesday May 19, 2010

THE KTM Komuter service will be fully operational on the Sentul-Batu Caves route in July, and will serve four new stations, KTMB freight services general manager Azman Ahmad Sharabi said on Monday.

He said the new stations on the route from Sentul were Taman Wahyu, Kampung Batu, Batu Cantonment and Batu Caves.

KTMB had hitherto provided special services to Batu Caves in conjunction with the Thaipusam festival at Batu Caves and to transport cement and containers.

“The KTM Komuter service can only be implemented fully in July because of infrastructure upgrading, especially ticketing,” he said after launching a high-powered loco**motive for the cement cargo train on the Sentul-Batu Caves route.

About RM400mil had been allocated for the extension of the KTM Komuter route by 7km from Sentul to Batu Caves, including construction of tracks and upgrading of the Batu Caves station.

Azman said the KTM Komuter would run at a 30-minute frequency on the route at normal times and at a 15-minute frequency during peak periods.

The route could also be served by high-powered locomotives of 3,300hp engines capable of drawing loads of up to 2,500 tonnes, he said.

The new locomotive would be able to draw up to 40 wagons compared with 25 by the previous versions, and save on diesel and manpower as well as travel time, he said.

Azman said KTMB was looking into ways to optimise the use of the new locomotives so as to help reduce road traffic congestion, and was also considering transporting dangerous cargo such as petroleum-based and chemical goods. — Bernama

New commuter line to Batu Caves to ease city’s traffic congestion
Thursday June 24, 2010

Rail check: Kong inspecting the double-tracking project in Batu Caves.

KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic congestion in Kuala Lumpur will be reduced when the new Sentul-Batu Caves Komuter service is fully operational at the end of July.

“Full operation of this new route will bring convenience to the public and tourists, especially during the Thaipusam festival,” said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha.

“It will help reduce traffic congestion in Kuala Lumpur and at the same time boost Malaysia’s tourism industry,” he told a press conference here yesterday after visiting the Batu Caves station.

He said the Batu Caves station, located very close to the Batu Caves complex, was convenient for temple visitors as it was within a walking distance.

Kong added that the new Sentul-Batu Caves double-tracking rail project, which began in November 2006, was nearing completion.

“The project cost a total of RM520mil. The 7.5km new route will cover three new stations — Taman Wahyu, Batu Kentonmen and Kampong Batu between Sentul station and Batu Caves.”

Kong said it took only about 15 minutes and a RM1 fare for passengers to travel from Sentul station to Batu Caves.

“We have ensured there are enough parking lots at all these new stations.

“As for safety, we have installed CCTVs at these stations as well.”

He said KTM Bhd had also installed the upgraded ticketing machines at these stations to improve the efficiency of the service.

When fully operational, 10,000 passengers are expected to use the new route from Sentul to Batu Caves daily.

Pemangku Pengurus Besar Perkhidmatan Kaunter KTMB, Mohd.

Mengulas penambahan stesen komuter, Mohd.

First timers: Students from SJK (T) Batu Caves and SM Dato Ibrahim
Ya’cob taking the Sentul-Batu Caves Komuter service for the first time.

Commuters travelling on the Sentul-Batu Caves route will be able to enjoy free rides for a week when the service starts tomorrow.

KTMB general manager (Commuter Services) Mohd Hider Yusoff said about 10,000 commuters were expected to travel on the route, which covered five stations — Sentul, Batu Kentomen, Kg Batu, Taman Wahyu and Batu Caves.

“This new route is expected to reduce traffic congestion, especially during the Thaipusam festival,” he told a press conference at the Sentul station in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

He said apart from the single and return tickets, weekly and monthly passes were also available.

“There will also be a 20% discount for those who buy the weekly passes and 33% for the monthly tickets,” he said.

Tickets for a trip from Sentul to Batu Caves is RM2.

Consession tickets are available at half price for children aged between four and 12, senior citizens (with KTM Komuter senior citizen card) and disabled people who are registered with the Welfare Department.

:cheers:Well done YTL the experience gain from building the ERL did not go to waste. It was a comfortable and smooth ride from sentul to Batu Caves
The stations were well designed. The only thing that got my attention was lack of parking space especially at Sentul and BatuCaves station.I am sure many taxi drivers are not going be happy once this line is fully operational cause its trully the cheapest way to get to BatuCaves from central KL:cheers:

KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry will study the proposal to extend the new Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTM Bhd) Komuter Service between Sentul and Batu Caves, to Selayang.

Its minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said the ministry would monitor the effectiveness of the new route and feedback from the public before making a decision.

He said this to reporters after launching the KTM Komuter service between Sentul and Batu Caves covering 7.5 km, at the Batu Caves commuter station yesterday.

On the Sentul-Batu Caves KTM Komuter route costing RM528 million, Kong said it would raise the number of passengers to 10,000 daily as Batu Caves was a tourist attraction.

“The opening of the new route will facilitate users and tourists to Batu Caves because an average of 80,000 Hindus and tourists flock to the famous Hindu temple each year,” he said.

With the new route, the KTM Komuter service starting at the Port Klang station in Selangor would now have five new stations namely Sentul, Batu Kantonmen, Kg Batu, Taman Wahyu before ending at Batu Caves, he added. — Bernama

About parking spaces, there are not many parking spaces, especially in Batu Caves station. The same applies to Sentul, especially when the Sentul station area fully developed :D

For Taman Wahyu station, parking spaces are sufficient from my view.

Now, what Rapid KL should do is revise their bus routes (especially those passing near the station to make a brief stop at these stations to enhance connectivity of these stations to the surrounding areas.

MACC probes purchase of Electric Multiple Units:ohno::ohno:
By LOURDES CHARLES
lourdes@thestar.com.my

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has started investigations into the purchase of 38 electric trains, allegedly overpriced by half a billion ringgit, from a company in China.

The investigations began several days ago after the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) handed a report to the MACC over the purchase of the six-car Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd for more than RM1.6bil.

The price had escalated to RM48mil per six-car train from the original cost of RM13.7mil per three-car train.

President of KTMB was once at ERL so it is likely that some of that knowledge & ideas would transfer through.

YTL is giving the ERL the support it needs and not micromanaging it - which is a good thing - and of course there is that money from the Airport Taxes.

Empat set tren elektrik beroperasi September

Oleh Mohd Zin Ali dan Ahmad Farizal Hajat
bhbiz@bharian.com.my
2011/08/05

Government Aims To Reduce Queues At KTM Komuter Lines With New Trains

By Alan Ting

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- When the newly-acquired trains from CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive from China are put into service for the KTM Komuter lines by the end of this year, the government hopes to reduce the agonising wait of more than 30 minutes among train commuters during peak hours.

Commuters on the Rawang-Sungai Gadut, Batu Caves-Port Klang, Sentul-Port Klang and Batu Caves-Rawang routes will benefit from the additional capacity from the trains, technically known as electric multiple units or EMUs.

The first of the 38 EMUs will arrive next month and will be tested before they are put into service.

About 100,000 commuters jam KTM Komuter trains daily during weekdays to travel in about 20 sets of EMUs of three cars each available to them.

From a schedule of 15-minute intervals at one time, which theoretically required at least 36 EMUs to be provided each day by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB), this has since slowed down to 20-minute intervals or, which theoretically means 25 EMUs.

But KTMB does not even have the luxury of 25 EMUs. Since September 2009, their availability has been down to around 21 EMUs daily because of broken down trains which have not been repaired from 62 EMUs at one time. On bad and unfortunate days, this can sink to a precariously low of 15 to 18 EMUs per day.

Hence, delays of 40 minutes or more on certain sectors are not uncommon with KTM Komuter trains always packed like sardines during weekdays.

This also amplifies the fact that there is no shortage of passengers for KTM Komuter trains in view of its relatively cheap cost as it only costs RM6 from KL Sentral to Seremban.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha told Bernama that the government had decided to improve the situation through a number of initiatives under the National Key Result Areas (NKRA) for public transport.

The NKRA initiatives were launched in July 2009 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as part of the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) towards achieving Vision 2020 and improving the government's service delivery to the people.

Besides improving capacity, Kong said the measures were also to raise the daily ridership to 600,000 public transport commuters in the Klang Valley by the end of 2012.

This target, he said, was 2.5 times more than the current ridership,

"It's a tall order for us but we are working hard to achieve our target," Kong said.

The current daily ridership is about 240,000 for public transport in the Klang Valley, estimated to represent 10 to 12 per cent of the total population in the country's busiest urban centre.

Kong explained that the Klang Valley's public transport services had already been filled to the brim, particularly for rail services (KTM Komuter, RapidKL, LRT and Monorail).

Such a pressing situation demanded the creation of an additional capacity for 360,000 more people to migrate to public transport from private vehicles, he said.

Of the potential increase, 58 per cent or 207,000 will be for rail and 42 per cent or 153,000 will be for buses.

Rail will be the biggest contributor, with KTM Komuter contributing around 95,000 passengers, the Kelana Jaya LRT line 62,000 and the Ampang LRT line 33,000.

The first step towards improving capacity took place at the end of 2010 when new four-car train sets were introduced on the Kelana Jaya LRT line, the most congested rail line in the Klang Valley, from the previous two-car train sets.

The initiative was to secure "quick wins" for the people's benefit under the NKRA for urban public transport.

China made is 'cheapo' like many China made coaches supplied to RapidKL and RapidPenang. Its understandable to buy similar EMU (model Desiro ET 425 M) made by Siemens AG (Germany) used by ERL KLIA will cost of fortune for the total of 38 train sets (EMUs). But for long run ERL train sets are more durable and reliable and managed well by our local engineers at E-MAS (ERL Maintenance Support Sdn Bhd) and could recoup profits after few years of operation.

This compared to RapidKL and KTM with so many abandoned buses and train sets, most of them unrepairable and dumped. Look at a massive 'bus graveyard' at Sg Choh/Sg Buaya, Rawang. Its such a waste of taxpayers money! Not to forget another China made of Melaka monorail :ohno:

Maybe KTM need to find new junkyard for this 38 new trainset..hehe

Better Selling those sets to Thai railway sytstem to be modified either Third Class carriages so we can retire some of our Makkasan carriage which has been commissioned since 1967-73.

Same thign can be said to 24 Class since this class of DE Locos are practically the same as good old Alsthom ... just rtepowering with MTU and here we go!
