KSRTC comes up with another passenger friendly facility
http://i52.************/n32kiq.jpg
The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has come up with yet another passenger-friendly facility. On a trial basis, it is now allowing passengers to reschedule their date of journey without any extra charge. The service can be availed at all KSRTC booking counters in the city.

“This facility has been running on a trial basis for the past two months now and the response has been quite good. This facility gives flexibility to our users, which is our motive,” said Channabasappa Herur, chief marketing manager, KSRTC.

Not just the date of journey, the service also allows passengers to change their destination. After rescheduling, the passenger gets a new trip code, bus number and Passenger Name Record. The application changes rest of the details except the date which is according to the passenger’s wish.

Rescheduling was not possible in the previous system and passengers had to first cancel their trip before booking the rescheduled journey afresh. In cancelling a ticket, a passenger has to do away with 25% of the fare.

KSRTC is also planning to incorporate the new service in its e-ticketing facility. It will soon roll out the new version of the online ticketing service.

“This is definitely helpful for people who have to frequently change plans of their official tours. But we would like to have the online version, because most of the times we book tickets on the KSRTC website,” said Himanshu Thapa, a marketing professional who resides in Koramangala.

In May, KSRTC had started bookings through mobile phones. Officials said the response to the service had been encouraging. The service allows passengers to travel without a printed copy of their ticket. They only need to show their mobile screen with the ticket confirmation message.

“This is not just an easy way for the passengers who frequently and mostly travel by air-conditioned buses, but also a green endeavour,” said the KSRTC spokesperson.

KSRTC has also invited tenders for the air-conditioned lounge in Mysore City Transport Corporation bus terminal and Kempegowda Bus Station in Majestic. An air-conditioned lounge was launched in Shantinagar on May 25. Among other things, it has a booking counter and electronic display board of schedules.

NEKRTC increases turnover
Hindu
(http://www.hindu.com/2011/06/08/stories/2011060859140300.htm)

Turnover during 2010-11 wasRs. 864.38 crore

Government urged to extend MVT exemption

GULBARGA: The North-eastern Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC), the youngest of all the transport corporations in the State, is growing fast in terms of adding new buses and registering high growth in turnover.

From a turnover of Rs. 116.63 crore in 2000-01 when the NEKRTC was launched, it has seen a growth in turnover with each passing year. During 2010-11, the turnover was Rs. 864.38 crore. The Managing Director of the NEKRTC, Shankar Patil, told The Hindu here on Tuesday that despite the Government's decision to withdraw the exemption given to the NEKRTC from paying the annual Motor Vehicle Tax during 2010-11, the loss suffered by the NEKRTC has been limited to just Rs. 7 crore this time, compared to Rs. 33.86 crore in 2009-10.

Mr. Patil said in the first two months of the current financial year, the NEKRTC has achieved a profit of Rs. 14 crore. The NEKRTC has appealed to the State Government to extend the exemption from paying Motor Vehicle Tax for a few more years taking into account various factors, including traffic and passenger density and the potential for growth in the operational area of the NEKRTC.

Mr. Patil said the fleet strength of the NEKRTC had increased from 1,500 in 2000-01 to 4,500 in 2010-11. A majority of all the old buses, which have run more than 7.5 lakh km, have been scrapped and another 600 buses would be scrapped soon.

Mr. Patil said that with the addition of 300 new buses this year, 300 old buses would be scrapped and the remaining 300 old buses would be scrapped next year. At present, city services are operated in Gulbarga, Bellary, Bijapur, Raichur and Bidar.

NEKRTC to exploit tourism potential in HK region

It will operate special buses for tourists in Bidar city shortly

‘Bidar district administration has released funds for special buses'

NEKRTC has established training centres at Humnabad and Hagaribommanahalli

GULBARGA: The North Eastern Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC) has decided to tap the tourism potential in Hyderabad Karnataka region. It will operate special tourist buses to the historic monuments of the Bahamani era in Bidar city shortly.

The Managing Director of the NEKRTC, Shankar Patil, told The Hindu here on Friday that the Bidar district administration had provided required funds to operate specially-designated tourist buses in Bidar city.

“We have placed orders for the buses. These buses will be designed to move easily on narrow roads and the seats will be give maximum comfort,” he said.

The buses would have a seating capacity for 35 passengers each.

Historic monuments would be painted on the air-conditioned buses to make them attractive.

Initially, the NEKRTC proposed to introduce five such special buses in Bidar for tourists to visit places around the city at an affordable rate, Mr. Patil said.

To a question, Mr. Patil said there was also a proposal to introduce a similar tourist bus at Hampi in Bellary district and Anegundi in Gangavati taluk in Koppal district. Also, there was a plan to introduce such tourist buses in Gulbarga city at a later stage.

The NEKRTC has established training centres for its staff at Humnabad in Bidar district and Hagaribommanahalli in Bellary district.

While the Humnabad training centre catered to the needs of Bidar, Gulbarga, Bijapur and Yadgir districts, the Hagaribommanahalli training centre concentrated on Bellary, Koppal, and Raichur districts.

The Humnabad training centre has a latest computerised driving test track where tests are conducted during the selection of drivers.

He said the NEKRTC has also decided to demolish the old city bus-stand near the Gulbarga Railway Station and build a modern city bus-stand and a commercial complex at a cost of Rs. 105 crore on public-private participation model.

Similarly, the space available in the Bidar old bus-stand and the Bellary old bus-stand would be exploited commercially.

NEKRTC makes judicious use of funds under SDP

http://www.hindu.com/2011/06/11/images/2011061152250301.jpg

Facility:The new bus-stand in Gulbarga constructed by the NEKRTC using SDP funds.

GULBARGA: The North Eastern Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC) has made judicious use of the funds provided under the Special Development Plan (SDP) for implementation of recommendations of the High Powered Committee for Redressal of Regional Imbalances headed by D.M. Nanjundappa.

The funds, provided to the NEKRTC every year under the SDP to improve infrastructure, have been used for construction of ultra modern bus-stands and for renovation of existing bus-stands.Managing Director of NEKRTC Shankar Patil told The Hindu here on Wednesday that under the SDP the State Government had provided Rs. 25 crore every year for the past three years. Mr. Patil said that with the SDP funds, the NEKRTC had taken up construction of modern bus-stands at 44 places. Of this, 16 had already been completed and the remaining 28 were in different stages of completion. “We were not permitted to renovate all the bus-stands in the jurisdictional area of the NEKRTC as old bus-stands can be demolished only after they are 40 years old.”

New bus depots

Mr. Patil said that apart from building new bus-stands and renovating the existing bus-stands, the NEKRTC had also used the SDP funds for construction of the new bus depots and providing them with all facilities. Of the total 10 new depots taken up for construction, seven had already been completed and three were in different stages of completion. “We have spent more than Rs. 70 crore for the construction and renovation of new bus-stands.”

He said that the Vijayanagar Development Authority and Jindal Steels have come forward to take up construction of a modern bus-stand at Hospet at a cost of Rs. 10 crore. The NEKRTC Board had in principle agreed to the proposal.

Bangalore: Want a bus ticket and tired of shuffling through your purse for small change? Here's a new card that will spare you the bother—the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is all set to introduce the 'mobility card' which will allow commuters to ride BMTC buses, Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses and the still-to-be-launched Metro train without buying tickets for each ride.

Transport minister R Ashoka said on Sunday that the mobility cards would be introduced by the end of the year. The cards could be purchased by paying a fixed amount, and the ticket tariff would be automatically deducted by swiping the card in a simple device that will be carried by the bus conductor. That way, the commuter and the conductor would be spared having to find exact change each time a ticket is issued.

Speaking after the Bhoomi Puja for the construction of a modern bus terminal at ISRO Layout, at a cost of Rs10 crore, Ashoka said the bus terminal would be ready for inauguration in time for Ugadi next year. The Banashankari bus terminal, built at a cost of Rs32crore, will be ready for inauguration next month, Ashoka said.

Ashoka claimed that BMTC is the best among city transport corporations in the country. The Volvo Vayu Vajra services with internet connectivity and voice announcement system in city buses, which keeps passengers informed ahead of each bus stop, has received much appreciation from the commuting public, Ashoka said, adding that services would be further upgraded, and the standards achieved in countries like the US would soon by matched by the state.

The transport minister said, with pride, that even though diesel prices were hiked frequently, BMTC continued to make profits consistently.

However, the minister admitted that the BMTC had limited success in luring people into using buses instead of riding private vehicles.

BJP MP Ananth Kumar advocated the need for speedy implementation of the multi-mode transport system in the city, offering the integrated services of the BMTC, KSRTC and metro.

Land leased out for new bus-stand, mall

Special Correspondent
Project to cost Rs. 9 crore

It will be taken up on PPP model

Land given for 30 years on monthly rent of Rs. 36 lakh

GULBARGA: The State Government has cleared a proposal to lease out prime land measuring 2.38 acres in the heart of the city for the construction of an intra-city bus-stand and a shopping mall on a public-private-participation (PPP) model.

An MoU has been signed between the North-Eastern Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC), which owns the prime land, and Chandrakant Consortium, a Bangalore-based company that has tied up with Bangalore Span Architects, Mahalaxmi Jewellers and others to take up the construction of the bus-stand and mall.

NEKRTC Managing Director Shankar Patil said here on Sunday that the land, which is adjacent to the administrative office of NEKRTC on the Gulbarga railway station to supermarket road, has been let on lease for 30 years with a condition that the consortium would pay a lease rent of Rs. 36 lakh a year and hand over the buildings, including the shopping mall and the bus-stand and any other property on the leased land, to the NEKRTC at the end of the lease period.

As per the estimates, Chandrakant Consortium would invest Rs. 9 crore in the project — Rs. 2 crore for the bus-stand and Rs. 7 crore for the mall.

KSRTC offers paperless ticket travel

Booking is now possible through mobile phone also

Ticket details received on the mobile can be shown to the conductor, printout is unnecessary

The passenger has to produce proof of identity

http://www.hindu.com/2011/06/20/images/2011062052550501.jpg

Bangalore: Going green, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has become the first transport entity in the country to offer paperless ticket travel. A passenger who books an e-ticket or m-ticket (mobile booking) need not get a printout of the ticket. Instead, he/she can now show the ticket details received on his/her mobile along with a proof of his/her identity to the conductor on the bus. “We have taken a decision in principle to permit mobile tickets (on KSRTC buses). We are now checking whether this information has gone down well with the conductors. This facility will definitely be useful to passengers,” KSRTC Managing Director Gaurav Gupta told The Hindu.

As the passenger had to show the identity card along with the mobile ticket while boarding the bus, there would be lesser chances of impersonation, he noted.

Personal details

A passenger registering on the KSRTC web portal www.ksrtc.in or mobile portal ksrtc.in/mobile for booking e-ticket will have to provide all personal details, including the mobile number, date of birth and address.

When the passenger books an e-ticket or m-ticket, a system-generated ticket will be sent to the registered mobile number of that passenger. The soft copy of the ticket comprises details about the originating and destination places, name of the passenger/s, trip code, PNR number, date of journey, departure time, seat number/s, class of service, boarding point and platform number.

With the introduction of mobile ticket booking a few months ago, booking KSRTC tickets has become easier. Just by accessing ksrtc.in/mobile through GPRS-enabled mobile phones, one can register on the KSRTC website and book tickets.

With KSRTC deciding to permit m-tickets on board, the passenger is relieved of the burden of getting the ticket printed. Even on the move, one can book the ticket and later hop into the KSRTC service without making the effort to locate a cyber café to get a printout of the ticket.

Besides making booking tickets a hassle-free experience, the KSRTC has made the process of cancellation of tickets also equally hassle-free. Cancellation is now possible through the web portal or mobile portal.

On an average, 5,000 to 6,000 e-tickets are booked every day and if every passenger prefers to use an m-ticket, it means that much paper is saved. Although the KSTRC allows e-booking and m-booking of tickets using credit/debit cards and Internet banking accounts of some banks, it does not store any data of the customers relating to their transactions. Once the passenger blocks a seat or seats and proceeds for payment, the transactions are carried out through a secured connection directly with the bank.

Growth

More people are making use of e-booking and m-booking of tickets, according to the KSRTC. This, the corporation said, was because of enhanced capacity of the server. Even during the peak season between March and May, KSRTC's portal did not witness any hitch and bookings went off smoothly.

This was because of strengthening of the server to receive as many as 1,000 simultaneous hits. In the coming months, the server will be further strengthened to receive up to 4,000 simultaneous hits, according to the KSRTC.

MANGALORE: Karnataka Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (DSS) has demanded that the B C Road depot of the KSRTC should not be separated from Mangalore division.

DSS district coordinator S P Ananda said the B C Road depot, which is 24km away from Mangalore city, should not be added to the proposed Puttur sub-division. People from B C Road depend more on Mangalore for administrative purposes. Hence, the depot also should be attached to the Mangalore division of the KSRTC itself, he added.

People in the region will not be benefited through the formation of a new sub-division at Puttur. Hence, KSRTC authorities should think of forming a new division based in Madikeri or Udupi, he suggested.

Further, he demanded that KSRTC authorities should give priority to candidates from Dakshina Kannada district while appointing staff for Mangalore division. The division faces the problem of staff shortage, as employees from other districts manage to get transfer to their native places immediately after they are posted in Mangalore, he pointed out.

It will be carved out of the Mangalore Division

KSRTC plans to consolidate its position in coastal Karnataka

Bangalore: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will open a new division in Puttur in Dakshina Kannada by this month-end.

This new division will be carved out of the existing Mangalore Division, which has the highest number of schedules (785) among the 13 divisions of the KSRTC, and one depot — Madikeri — from the Mysore Rural Division will be attached to it.

‘Over-saturated'

“The measure will not only consolidate our position in coastal Karnataka, but also enhance the delivery of services. The Mangalore Division, with seven depots, is over-saturated. The new division is being carved out for better monitoring and administration,” said KSRTC Managing Director Gaurav Gupta.

The corporation, Mr. Gupta told The Hindu, had opened a new division at Chamarajanagar last year, taking the total number of divisions to 13. Ideally, one division has to cater to 500 schedules. With the bifurcation of Mangalore Division, the old division will have about 400 schedules and the new one will get about 500 schedules, he said.

Puttur and surrounding taluks — Sullia, Belthangadi and Bantwala — come under the nationalised routes scheme and the corporation has to focus more on providing bus service in these areas. A new division at Puttur would certainly help operate short-distance services even as the KSRTC could concentrate on long-distance, inter-State and premium services from the Mangalore Division, Mr. Gupta said.

At present, the Mangalore Division has seven depots — Mangalore I, II, and III, Kundapura, Dharmasthala, Puttur and B.C. Road. After the bifurcation, the Mangalore Division will continue to have Mangalore I, II, III and Kundapura depots even as another depot is proposed at Udupi.

“We have sufficient land abutting the National Highway in Udpui and the depot will come up soon,” Mr. Gupta said.

The new division at Puttur will have Dharmasthala, B.C. Road, Puttur and Madikeri depots. The corporation is scouting for land at Sullia to open one more depot, Mr. Gupta said.

Even though the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation has been seeking permit to operate city services in Mangalore for more than a year, the Regional Transport Authority, headed by the Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner, has kept quiet.

KSRTC Managing Director Gaurav Gupta attributed this delay to opposition from private bus operators. “As Mangalore city comes under non-nationalised sector, the corporation should have permit to operate services,” he said

Fare hike: KSRTC may lose passengers to train

MYSORE: The rail passenger traffic on the Mysore-Bangalore sector could go up further, thanks to KSRTC which has revised the fares following a hike in the diesel price.

While the Volvo services are spared (the fare is left untouched) there is an increase across the services offered by the public transport.

The fares of Rajahamsa from Mysore to Bangalore has gone up by Rs 9 (from Rs 163 to 174) while in ordinary bus, it's revised to Rs 101 from Rs 95.

The rates are quite high compared to railways. Fares for passenger train from Mysore to Bangalore is Rs 21, express train (Rs 42), superfast train Rs 52 and Shatabdi Express it is Rs 275.

A monthly train pass between Mysore and Bangalore comes at Rs 370 while a bus pass costs Rs 1,520. "The worst sufferers of price rise are middle and lower class people. What about daily wagers? It is high time the government takes some steps to protect the common man," says R Ramesh, a regular traveller to Bangalore, who is planning to shift to train.

The bus fare between Mysore and Mangalore has gone up by Rs 20. The fare of ordinary bus has gone up to Rs 196 from Rs 176 and in Rajahamsa, the fare is Rs 313.

"There is nearly 7% increase in the fares," M Vasu, Mysore rural divisional controller, KSRTC, said. Every day, between Mysore and Bangalore there are 32 ordinary buses, 11 Sheethal services, 10 Volvo and 4 Megadoota buses.

I am one among those thinking of choosing train. If the trend continues, a new non-stop train can be started between Mysore and Bangalore. Btw, those 67 buses mentioned are only non-stop ones.

'KSRTC to add 3,200 buses to Its fleet'

The state government has permitted to add another 3,200 buses to the public sector Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) to its existing 23,000 fleet, Transport minister R Ashok informed. The minister told newsmen here on Wednesday that 600 buses would be added to its Hublibased South Western Road Transport Corporation and another 800 to Gulbarga NERTC. Both have earned good revenue in recent years. Informing that the stateowned public transport companies are the largest staterun transport enterprises in the country and have earned a reputation for registering for the lowest rate of accidents and better commuter comforts, the Minister claimed that despite the Centre's advice to promote the private sector we are pursuing public transport system with more vigour. Expressing concern over the increased number of road accidents involving maxi cabs, Ashok disclosed that the government planned to clamp a blanket ban on the operations of such vehicles in the entire state. Referring to a recent accident near Tumkur in which as many as 18 people were killed, the Minister said that two officials from the Transport Department were suspended and a ban order was issued on plying maxi cabs in the district.

Transport officers have seized over 25 maxi cabs in Mandya district recently where more KSRTC buses would be put into service as an alternative, Ashok said.

He said the department has mobilised over `1,200 crore against the target of `920 crore last year, which is expected to exceed 20 per cent.

Filters in KSRTC buses to check pollution

MYSORE: In an attempt to put a check on its contribution to global warming, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), Mysore division, has decided to fix Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) to all the buses plying in the city to reduce carbon emission.
The KSRTC has taken up the first of its kind project in the country with the help of World Bank.
With this, diesel engine vehicles, which are notorious for the thick smoke they emit, have a chance of going green with the help of the DPF device.
With the Rs 3 crore project, KSRTC's Mysore division will fix DPFs to all the 400 buses including 41 Marco Polo and 79 semilow floor buses.
The estimated cost of a DPF is Rs 1.25 lakh and fixing DPF is a part of Intelligent Transport System Programme, a World Bank initiative, said an official source.
It added that the World Bank had provided grants under Global Environment Facility Fund.

The environmental norms stipulate 50 hz as the limit for carbon emission by a bus. According to statistics, presently, the city buses emit 30 hz and the fixing of DPF will reduce the quantity of Carbon Monoxide and Nitrus Oxide.

When contacted, KSRTC Divisional Controller MN Srinivas (Urban Transport) said that the Centre approved the project in the last year.

KSRTC would soon invite tender for the supply of DPFs and the devices would be fixed to all the buses in a phased manner, he added.

He informed that KSRTC's urban division buses make 6,600 trips a day in 142 routes.

"We check the emission limit of our buses every month. Though the carbon emission is not above the limit set by law, KSRTC has taken up the project to protect the environment," he added.

KSRTC wants pvt buses out of Majestic

Travellers who opt for private inter-city and interstate buses may soon have to board far from Majestic, the transport hub. Though the new boarding points aren't yet clear, moving away from the city centre may not be convenient for the public.

Behind the move to get private transporters out of Majestic is the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), which has written to the state government to ban parking of private buses in a 5km radius from Majestic bus stand. The reason cited — unauthorized parking of buses is eating up prime space in the central business district , leading to traffic jams.

Arun Dinakar, who travels to Tumkur on weekends, is dismayed. "Private buses provide better connectivity , that's why I travel by them. If these are kept away from Majestic area, we cannot make use of BMTC buses to reach our destination in the city. It is not a good idea," he says.

The move is bound to hit the private sector — while it aims to promote public transport and mobilize revenue for state-run transport agencies , it discourages private players.

Businessman M B Vineet, a frequent traveller to Mumbai, boards a bus at Kalasipalyam market. "Why should private buses be discriminated against? Government buses also add to traffic jams. It will be difficult for us to move away from core areas," he says.

KSRTC came up with these measures to decongest the city centre, after Metro underground tunnelling work began in Majestic. It also plans to decentralize its services.

"We are asking the government to stop the unauthorized parking of private buses around Kempegowda bus station in Majestic. They have no right to park vehicles on busy roads. Not just private buses, KSRTC is also shifting its services to various TTMCs to clear the traffic mess in the city centre," KSRTC managing director Gaurav Gupta told TOI.

On weekends, especially, private buses are parked around Anand Rao Circle, KR Market and Majestic area. There are around 7,000 private buses of state carriage and 2,000 buses under contract carriage.

DECENTRALIZE, DECONGEST

Buses plying towards Chennai, Madurai, Puducherry, Pudukote, Tiruchi, Chidambaram and Coimbatore have their boarding points at Shanthi Nagar TTMC now. To decongest city centre, KSRTC plans a boarding point at Peenya I Phase for buses plying towards Davanagere, Dharwad, Gangavathi, Shimoga, Tumkur, Dandeli. It has tried to create a similar boarding point for buses plying towards Kolar and KGF at KR Puram, but due to inaccessibility, not many commuters are able to make use of the service. Traffic cops say buses from Hosur, Anekal coming to Kalasipalyam bus station is adding to traffic woes, as construction of the new bus station is yet to start. "The problem of Kalasipalyam bus station is that there are too many players involved, including BBMP, which has not yet taken up the project for the past oneand-half years," explained KSRTC officials

Common Mobility Card by November (http://ibnlive.in.com/news/common-mobility-card-by-november/168064-60-119.html)

BANGALORE: Commuters in the state will have a Common Mobility Card by November which will help them freely travel in any bus in the state. This announcement was made at a workshop on 'Sustainable Development of Public Transport' organised by Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) in association with the International Association of Public Transport (UITP).
Principal Secretary of Transport Department M K Shankarlinge Gowda made the announcement. Some of the other measures announced at the workshop include the introduction of 1000 more buses in the city along with the introduction of additional buses in other Tier II and Tier III cities. This is being done to promote public transport in the state which has the largest number of public vehicles already.
The discussants at the workshop included K R Srinivas, Managing Director, BMTC, K Jayaraj, Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Karnataka and S K Parameshwar, Director (Tech), BMTC.

Hop on to a battery-run bus this year

BANGALORE: It's a baby step towards reducing emission of green house gases (GHG) from vehicles in the city. If BMTC has its way, battery-operated buses will soon be a reality in the city. A proposal has already made in this regard.

"Increase in vehicular population and emission levels is a cause of concern. We have 37 lakh vehicles in the city, which is next only to Delhi. Over 1,300 vehicles are being registered daily. So we are looking at options which are environment friendly. We are in talks with companies, and by December, we will have a trial run of battery-operated buses in Bangalore," said M Shankaralinge Gowda, principal secretary to government (transport).

HYBRID BUSES

Gowda was at a workshop on 'Sustainable development of public transport' organized by International Association of Public Transport (UITP) at Bangalore on Saturday.

"The CNG (compressed natural gas) will come in by 2013. We are looking at hybrid buses, which run on diesel -- either CNG or battery -- to reduce pollution and motorists' dependency on one fuel," he added.

CMC IN NOVEMBER

Stressing on multi-mode transport accessibility to public to increase mobility, Shankaralinge Gowda said common mobility cards (CMC), which help public to travel in BMTC buses and Metro train, will be issued in November.

"We are also looking at extending it to even KSRTC buses for those people who travel to city from neighbouring districts such as Tumkur, Kolar, Mandya and Mysore. The fare will be a little higher but it will help these commuters. In turn, the revenue of KSRTC/BMTC will also go up," he added.

To augment city bus services in the state, nearly 3,000 buses will be purchased, with Mysore, Hubli getting 500 buses each and BMTC getting an additional 1,000 buses, he said.

Heather Allen, senior manager, UITP, said the best practices adopted by both KSRTC and BMTC are worth emulating. She also stressed at reducing emission of green house gases by adopting alternative fuel.

Bus travellers to Mysore must go to one terminus

BANGALORE: Do you plan to go to Mysore by boarding a bus at Majestic? Henceforth, you can't do that. You will have to board KSRTC buses only from Mysore Satellite Bus Station (MSBS). This came into effect on Friday.

The idea is to decongest Majestic. Till now, the authorities believed in a single-point boarding system. Now, they realize that this centralized system will inconvenience passengers. The decentralisation is already on for buses to Chennai, Madurai, Puducherry, Pudukottai, Tiruchy, Chidambaram, Coimbatore with Shanthinagar bus terminal as the boarding point.

K A Rajkumar, director (operations), KSRTC, told STOI that the move was to decentralize the system completely. "It is not desirable for a rapidly growing city like Bangalore to have one centralized bus boarding system. It causes inconvenience to commuters when everybody comes to Majestic irrespective of their further destination. The ongoing Metro work has made Majestic and surrounding areas congested. Even after the work is completed in three years, we will not have all buses going out of Majestic. It does not suit the topography of Bangalore,'' he said.

So far, KSRTC had already moved about 1,500 departures to MSBS and now the remaining 160 departures towards Mysore will also shift there.

To avoid congestion in Kempegowda Bus Station, some services have already been shifted to MSBS, Shanthinagar, NGEF (Byappanahalli) and Kalasipalyam Bus Stand. "We plan to have a similar terminal in Hebbal for buses towards Hyderabad, Tirupati and other places in Andhra Pradesh," said Rajkumar.

Affects commuters
The worst hit will be regular commuters who travel to Mysore and other places every day for work from Bangalore and its outskirts. "I travel to Mysore every day from Yeshwantpur. I go to Majestic by bus and then board another bus to MSBS. Now, I will have to make one more trip to MSBS that takes not less than 45 minutes due to traffic jams on Mysore Road," says bank official Srikanth S P.

KSRTC says it takes just 15-20 minutes to reach MSBS. "In course of time, the traffic congestion will reduce, as road-widening work is on," a spokesman said.

KSRTC ties up with private company to develop land next to Hassan bus-stand

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation has entered into an agreement with a private company for developing two-acre land adjacent to the KSRTC bus-stand here.

The land was registered in the name of Patil Constructions and Infrastructure Ltd. on Tuesday. KSRTC Divisional Commissioner Basavaraj said the corporation had decided to develop the land on a public-private partnership model. The private company would design the project, build the structure, own, operate and transfer the same to the corporation after 33 years. A shopping complex, recreation centre, restaurant and parking lot would come up there. “The company will pay Rs. 4.15 lakh every six months for the next 33 years,” he said.

However, Hassan MLA H.S. Prakash has opposed the project. “We will not allow the company to implement the project,” he said.

BANGALORE: To give a boost to production and consumption of bio-fuel as an alternative source of energy to diesel, the state government has formed a new body, Bio-fuel Development Corporation, Home and Transport Minister R Ashok said on Wednesday.

Speaking to newsmen here, he said the decision to form a corporation for bio-fuel development was taken considering the importance of protecting environment and helping the farming community go for additional source of income by growing bio-fuel seeds like honge and jatropa.

The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation, the state-owned transport corporation providing commuter services in Bangalore city, was mixing about 7.7 per cent of ethanol with diesel for its fleet of vehicles, he said, and added that it had increased the fuel efficiency of the vehicles.

“The BMTC would deploy 10 bio-fuel-run buses to promote the use of ethanol and create an awareness,” he said.

The minister said another state-run corporation, KSRTC. was also using ethanol extensively for its fleet. “Over 1,500 KSRTC buses were run by ethanol-mixed fuel and it helped save 60 per cent of fuel bill,” he added.

He also stated that the state had appealed the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Gases to liberalise its policy on the bio-fuel consumption and remove restrictions imposed on the quantum of ethanol to be mixed with diesel.

To a query, he said the KSRTC had planned to build a high-tech bus station at a cost of over `27 crore at Sadagalli in Mysore district and one each at Mangalore and Puttur at a total cost of `50 crore on PPP model.

Karnataka's second bio-diesel plant to come up near Devanahalli

A bio-diesel manufacturing unit with a 50-tonne daily capacity will be set up near Devanahalli in four months, Karnataka State Biofuel Development Board chairman YB Ramakrishna told DNA on the sidelines of a World Biofuel Day event at IISc here on Wednesday.

The Devanahalli unit will be the state’s second bio-diesel unit. The first one was inaugurated in Peenya Industrial Area on February 20.

The second unit will be developed by Southern Biodiesel Technologies. Company director Abhishek Mudram said that the unit would attain half its capacity in one-and-a-half months’ time.

Ramakrishna, however, insisted that the unit had to attain 75% of the capacity before the launch.

The proximity of biofuel farmlands at Doddaballapur and cheaper land prices were the reason why Devanahalli was chosen for locating the unit. Mudram asserted that the bio-diesel unit would benefit the city.

Explaining why bio-diesel was yet to catch the imagination of motorists, Ramakrishna said: “The Centre has mandated that vehicle engines must be equipped to use petrol or diesel with 5% blend bio-fuel.

However, the non-availability of ethanol-blended fuel has resulted in engine manufacturers failing to come up with the prescribed engines.”

Also, there was a scarcity of biofuel crops and the Centre’s pricing policy too was discouraging.

“The Centre has fixed the price of biofuel at `27 per litre, while the cost of production varies from `35-40. The state-owned oil companies may afford to go by the central policy but it is a loss to private producers,” he said.

Ramakrishna said it helps producers only if they sell huge quantities of biofuel to customers like the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) which is not only the largest biofuel buyer in the country but also buys it at a price that is slightly less than the production cost.

He also said that Karnataka had 13.5 lakh hectares of wasteland/dryland where biofuel crops like neem, jatropa, pongamia, mahua and simarouba could be cultivated. “Growers need to wait only for a year to reap the benefits for the rest of their lives,” he said.

The board had helped plant three lakh seedlings on 3,200 farmers’ land across the state in 2009.

KSRTC to shift premium services to satellite bus-stand

Move comes in the wake of metro underground work

It is expected to ease traffic congestion

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will shift its premium bus services from Bangalore being operated from the Kempe Gowda Bus Station (KBS) to the Mysore Road Satellite Terminal (MCTC bus stand) from August 20.

Starting point

KSRTC Rajahamsa and Airawat (Volvo) services bound to Mysore, Madikeri, Virajpet, Siddapura, Coimbatore, Ooty, Thrissur and so on will start from MCTC instead of KBS.

The move comes in the wake of the construction of Namma Metro underground stations at Majestic, KSRTC, said in a press release.

Easing traffic

This measure is also expected to ease traffic congestion in the central business district with fewer buses as well as passengers' vehicles.

Services

The State transport corporation operates 120 Rajahamsa services and 75 Airawat services a day in the Bangalore-Mysore sector.

MCTC already handles about 1,500 departures towards Mysore sector, which are mainly ordinary and express services.

KSRTC is already operating shuttle services between MCTC and KBS by deploying regular buses with wide doors.

Soon buses could turn into transport lorries

Pressing the panic button, the transport department has asked state-run Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and Bangalore Metro Transport Corporation (BMTC) to remove seats from some of its buses to transport essential commodities in case the lorry strike intensifies.

Over 6 lakh vehicles in the state are off the road since Friday , supporting a strike called by Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents Federation and Bangalore Tourist Taxi Owners' Association. These transport associations have extended support to the strike called by the All India Motor Transport Congress. The strike comes at a time when the state and country celebrate festivals like Krishna Janmashtami, Ramzan and Gowri/Ganesha in the coming days this month.

"At a meeting on Saturday, it was decided that the government will cater to the transportation needs of essential commodities like foodgrains, milk, medicine, fruits and vegetables , LPG among others through BMTC and KSRTC buses if the strike intensifies. We have asked both the state-run transport corporations to remove seats to store commodities and transport them," a senior official in the transport commissioner's office told STOI. The department has already dashed off letters to Hopcoms, Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) and the food and civil supplies department to brace for the emergency. The department , however, will wait till Tuesday to know the number of KSRTC and BMTC buses required for emergency services.

hats off to KSRTC,these people must diversify their business,It would be great if they start a cargo division/logistics just like VRL.

KSRTC must cash in on other profitable businesses like Hospitality -Operate decent lodging and hotel services in newly built bus stands. It will help a lot of them.Normally people settle for lodges in and around the bus stand, then why not KSRTC start such services in its own complex?

There is lodging/rooms are available at Mysore Central bus stand. KSRTC is planning to start A/C lounges for Airavat club class passengers at Hassan and Shimoga KSRTC bus terminals.

KSRTC and KMF(Nandini) are the best Govt departments of our state.

Hi Akash,

At last one thing (in the recent times) where TNSTC seem to have implemented things before KaSRTC. TNSTC has embarked upon a plan to fix "courier box" in select routes for using the buses to carry cargo...

Check one sample tender in this regard: Tender (http://2.imimg.com/data2/TH/EO/HTT-240/240_2011-07-14_485039.pdf)

That is wonderful, some RTC atleast has implemented it :)

In KA , we have VRL which is very very strong. It has roots almost everywhere in India now.VRL never let other cargo/logistics business thrive.I appreciate VRL service,I have used their cargo service quite a lot.

KSRTC Director (Operations) K.A Rajkumar told presspersons here that close to 580 buses will be shifted to the new bus-stand, which was inaugurated in January. The corporation has already shifted services of 1,200 buses to the new bus-stand, built at a cost of Rs. 32 crore.

Considering the public demand, the corporation decided to retain services of buses commuting to rural areas of the district at the old bus-stand.

Mr. Rajkumar said the new bus-stand was constructed with the purpose of providing service of all buses from one place. The corporation would improve city bus services to help the public reach the new bus-stand. To avoid pressure on N.R. Circle, the long-route buses would reach the bus-stand through a bypass, without entering the city.

KSRTC Chief Civil Engineer Jagadish Chandra said the four acres of land in the old bus-stand would be developed as a traffic transit management centre (TTMC). The centre would consist of a multi-level parking, space for civic amenities, and a city bus-station. This would need an investment of Rs. 60 crore.

No violation

Mr. Chandra clarified that the KSRTC had not violated any rule in allotting two acres close to the new bus-stand to a private company to develop it as a commercial space. The corporation had the right to develop 40 per cent of its property as commercial space, he said.

DASARA RUSH: KSRTC BUS STAND AT SCOUTS GROUND

Mysore, Sept. 14 (RK&KMC)- In view of the influx of heavy traffic during the nine days of Dasara celebrations in city, the Scouts and Guides Ground close to the Deputy Commissioner's office along the Hunsur Road will be temporarily converted into a KSRTC bus stand.

Police Commissioner Sunil Agarwal, who convened a meeting of the senior officials of MUDA, MCC, KSRTC and Traffic Police at his office in Nazarbad yesterday, suggested that in order to ease traffic congestion, the KSRTC buses arriving in city from Hunsur and H.D. Kote taluks be prevented from entering the city's core region and instead, they be stationed at the Scouts and Guides' Ground. This arrangement will be in force from Sept. 28 to Oct. 6, Agarwal said, adding that city buses will be plying from the Ground to the Sub-Urban and City Bus Stand.

He also urged the MUDA to provide basic amenities like shelter, drinking water and toilets for the passengers at the Ground.

MUDA Commissioner Dr. C.G. Betsurmath, MCC Superintending Engineer Mahesha and KSRTC Divisional Controller Srinivas nodded approval to the suggestion and assured to take the necessary steps.

Discussions were also held about the pros and cons of making parking arrangements at the Dasara Exhibition Ground premises by opening the gate on the M.G. Road side, towards the south of the Expo Ground.

It was suggested that during the nine days of the festival, those intending to go to the Palace, Zoo, Karanji lake and the Expo must ply via the M.G. Road and park their vehicles at the Expo ground.

The Zoo Director was reque-sted to open an additional counter for issuing entry tickets to the Zoo at the parking lot itself, by which long queues in front of the Zoo could be avoided during the festival rush.

Karnataka Exhibition Authority CEO Hemanth Kumar, DCPs Basavaraj Y. Malagathi and P. Rajendra Prasad, ACP (Traffic) Shankaregowda and others were present in the meeting.

KSRTC to Expand Fleet,Plans to Offer Tech-Driven Services

The profit-making public sector unit,Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC),will further increase its reliance on technology while expanding its network.

The corporation, which reported a revenue of Rs 2,078.64 crore with a net profit of Rs 62.05 crore for FY11,has been embracing technology in almost all its areas of operations.

KSRTC MD Gaurav Gupta says that there has been tremendous benefits in using technology in each of its ventures like HR recruitment, vehicle tracking and monitoring. For example,KSRTC was one of the first public transport corporations that introduced electronic ticketing machines in 2004.This has given them multiple benefits like reduction in costs of printing and stationery, instant analysis of traffic pattern and, more importantly, plugging the revenue leakages.Similarly, computerisation of drivers recruitment has ensured that there is transparency in the selection procedure with large number of candidates being selected in a shorter period of time.To date, over 18,000 candidates were selected through this method.

KSRTC is now looking at upgrading the electronic ticketing machines, which could accept normal credit credits.Gupta says the technology is robust but it will have to be implemented in a phased manner as there are limited number of players who can provide such services. However, the core area where technology can play a vital role is ticket-booking services. The corporation first introduced its webbased reservation system in 2006 across its own counters and franchisee outlets across the country. It has also introduced ticketing facility through the internet and mobile handsets for quite sometime now.For FY10,the corporation booked 9.6 lakh e-tickets generating Rs 42.36 crore revenue and this touched Rs 71.22 crore in FY11,recording over 60% growth.According to Gupta, ebooking constitutes around 25% of its overall booking.KSRTC,which operates a fleet of over 7,000 buses,is hoping to keep its current growth momentum and increase its topline by 10-12 % in FY12 while keeping its profitability intact.MK Shankarlinge Gowda, principal secretary (transport department ),attributes three reasons for the profitability of KSRTC.Firstly, the state government has granted autonomy to the corporation in fare fixation as it is decided on the prices of fuel.Secondly, officials are given longer tenure to give them continuity.Lastly, the bus fleet is young, giving them the competitive edge. However, with over 33,000 people on rolls,it will have to strike a fine balance in keeping the right number of employees to deliver the services without increasing its cost.

KSRTC TO BECOME A MODEL IN COUNTRY: MINISTER

Workshop on Intelligent Transport System begins

Caption: Transport Minister R. Ashok and District Minister S.A. Ramdas inaugurating the workshop at Hotel Regaalis in city this morning. Others seen are KSRTC MD Gaurav Gupta, MLAs M. Satyanarayan & H.S. Shankaralingegowda, Deputy Mayor M.J. Ravi Kumar, KHB Chairman G.T. Devegowda, MUDA Chairman L. Nagendra, Mayor Pushpalatha Chikkanna and MLC Thontadarya.

Mysore, Sept. 21 (KCU&KK)- Transport Minister R. Ashok has optimistically visualised KSRTC to become a model in the country after the development projects were through under JNNURM.

He was speaking after inaugurating a day-long workshop on Intelligent Transport System (ITS) under Sustainable Urban Transport Project (SUTP) organised by KSRTC, Mysore City Transport Division at Hotel Regaalis here this morning.

Long-term plan

Ashok pointed out that ITS under SUTP was not just an instantaneous feature but a long-term plan spanning about 25 years foreseeing all odds.

"ITS is a people-friendly scheme with comprehensive details beamed on screen along with voice announcements so that the city bus passengers do not miss any detail," he said.

"The city bus service will gradually turn green with usage of bio-fuel. Honge oil is being successfully blended with fuel for buses plying in Doddaballapur. The combination of ITS and Go- Green concept for buses will surely push KSRTC to the pinnacle of achievement," reiterated Minister Ashok.

Presiding over the programme, District in-charge Minister S.A. Ramdas said "urbanisation spree has become a global problem. In our country 32 per cent of the population live in cities posing problem of housing, water, power, drainage system and transport. ITS under SUTP will surely go a long way to solve the problems which should be gradually extended to rural areas."

He suggested a penalty clause for drivers and conductors of buses not adhering to ITS. He further announced that on the cards was a Rs. 650 crore Rapid Bus System for the city with separate lanes to further help the people and also a free Circuit Bus System in core area of city which will be gradually made vehicle-free to begin first with Dasara.

About 200 members of NGOs, students and KSRTC officials are attending the workshop featuring a multi-media power point presentation by I.C. Sharma, National Project Manager, SUTP, New Delhi.

Wise move to ease agony of waiting for buses (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/192662/wise-move-ease-agony-waiting.html)

The State Transport Department will soon introduce an intelligent transport system (ITS) to spare passengers the agony of waiting for buses.

Speaking at a workshop on the system here on Wednesday, Transport Minister R Ashoka said the first-of-its-kind system in the country would be implemented on a pilot basis in Mysore and Bangalore.

CMC Limited, which has come forward to implement the project based on GPS technology, has completed the work on the first phase to launch the operation between September 26 and November 4 in Mysore.

The new system will enable passengers to get information on timings, bus and route numbers through an SMS. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation buses will adopt the system on a priority basis. The ITS will be installed on 500 buses at 105 bus stops, six bus stations and 45 platforms. The project, estimated to cost Rs 20.13 crore, is partially funded by the Central government (Rs 10.90 crore) and the World Bank (Rs 9.07 crore).

Battery-operated busesThe Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation will shortly add battery-operated buses to its fleet, Ashoka said. This is in addition to the 1,500 buses being run on alternative fuels such as ethanol and pongemia (honge).

Hi Kadri,

Nice capture, i had seen a similar new series sleeper bus some 1.5months back. The face of the bus was similar to the KA40 5XX + series Rajahamsa face, it is also the same on the new 12m Rajahamsa AC bus. So i guess, this one too is from Prakash.

Bk3494,

I was just about to post about this new service that is showing up in KSRTC site, it seems to be a new service:

More details at KSRTC site (http://www.ksrtc.in/site/news-and-events)

It is a 48 seater 12m bus(forumers can confirm). Looks like KaSRTC has come up with a new segment in between Rajahamsa Executive and Rajahamasa CS.

Looks like KA wants to try what SETC did to its pax by stuffing them in a 48 seater coach.

This is a 48 seater whereas Rajahamsa is 44 seater. Legroom would be less in this new class of service and i guess the seat inclination angle should be 20 degrees.

Anyway, regarding the new Mercedes Benz Club Class. Starting from 1st October from Bangalore.

In case of Hyderabad and Vijayawada, it's replacing a normal Volvo bus. So the total number of services are the same.

In case of Ernakulam, the bus is an extra service taking the total to 5 a day.

Here're the timings

Bangalore - Hyderabad
From BLR at 21.22 and from HYD at 19.05

Bangalore - Vijayawada
From BLR at 20.28 and from VJA at 20.31

Bangalore - Ernakulam
From BLR at 19.44 and from EKM at 18.28

Should see if KSRTC will buy more Benz multi-axles. They only bought 10 of the single-axle Benz. Guess they weren't that happy with them.

KSRTC should put the new buses on manglore,Hubli or Goa routes rather than putting new buses on inter state routes. As in the case of hyderbad where existing bus is replaced by new one, Money is ours and they r enjoying the comfort and we have to travel in old buses which have cockroaches.....

I heard from one of the Mangalore depot drivers that they got 20 more Volvos (for a total of 100 volvos). Hopefully, they'll replace the old buses running between Mangalore and Bangalore.

Also, wanted to post an addon to my reply. Don't Kannadigas ever travel to Hyderabad or Vijayawada? So, KSRTC is running buses there as well. And as to, what routes get new buses, think we can trust KSRTC on that.

Six Mercedes Benz buses would operate between Bangalore and Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Ernakulum to start with.

Drivers would be given special training at Mercedes Benz plant at Pune.
However, for the benefit of common people, KSRTC introduced Karnataka Vaibhav buses for the benefit of common passengers and buses, which would start operations from next month.

KaSRTC will be introducing multi-axle Benz and Volvo buses to on inter-state routes as well. They are waiting to for the delivery of more buses. I read that the Airavat Club Class buses will be running on Bangalore-Mysore route in the near future because it is a very popular route for KaSRTC. I read this on Mangalorean or hindu news website when KaSRTC Mangalore Division/Depot got some Airavat Club Class Buses.

Will there be any difference in the ticket fare for Volvo and MB in Club Class fleet???

Actually, KSRTC buses are limited to 85kmph. Including multi-axles. Club class buses are more comfortable compared to normal Airavats. Interiors are good, and there's more leg space.

Fare is the same for both Club Classes. And depending on the route, 50 or 100rs more than Airavat. (blr-hyd is 50rs difference, mng-hyd is 100rs difference)

The main reason why KaSRTC is not able to run more routes on Hyderabad-Karnataka and Mumbai-Karnataka is after bifurcation KaSRTC has lost authority. Dir-Ops of KaSRTC replied when I sent a mail to operate more inter/intra-state buses from these regions he mentioned since these regions fall under NWKRTC and NEKRTC jurdiction they only will be able to operate and KaSRTC cannot operate and they have forwarded my mail to repective officers in NWKRTC and NEKRTC and KaSRTC has been given only certain routes in these regions to operate.

Ya, putting all luxury buses under Airavat Volvo makes it easier to search. Plus it's only 10 MB two-axle buses.

They bought 6 MB multi-axle and will receive the remaining 34 by December. Does anyone know how many Volvo multi-axles they have and how many are on order? And also, are KSRTC buying more 2-axle Volvos?

The earnings per km is much higher in a multi axle - Airavat club class when compared to singe axle ones - Airavat. This is due to higher ticket price.

New bus service inaugurated between Shidlaghatta and Chikkaballapur

Easier now to reach district centre: MLA

Shidlaghatta/Chikkaballapur, Oct 6, DHNS:

Legislator V Muniyappa said people who travel between the taluk centre and the Chikkaballapur, the district centre will now get a bus every 15 minutes.

He inaugurated on Thursday a new service which was a Dasara gift by the Transport Department. The service has six new model buses with modern techniques.

Students of colleges and schools, workers, teachers, farmers and even the public who need to go to Chikkaballapur, the district centre, can travel by hi-tech buses paying very little as ticket fare, Muniyappa said. There are 52 trips daily, for the convenience of those who travel from Shidlaghatta, he explained.

Venkatesh, an officer of the Transport Department, said “Additional bus services, connecting taluk centres to district centres, are started today all over the State.”

The buses from Shidlaghatta will travel on the main highway via Hosahudya, Gidnahalli, Jatavara, Nayanahalli and Patrenahalli. “A voice recording will also inform the passengers of the stops along the route. The bus fare is also much lesser, compared to other buses,” he informed.

Traffic controller Narayanaswamy, Zilla Panchayat former president V Subramani, Komul director K Gudiyappa, Town Municipal Council member Chikkamuniyappa and others were
present at the inaugural ceremony.

In Chikkaballapur

Legislator K P Bachegowda appreciated the efforts of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), which has started a new bus service between Chikkaballapur and Shidlaghatta taluks. He was speaking after inaugurating the new service outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner on Thursday.

“The new service will greatly benefit the residents of both rural and urban areas. It will be a connecting system between the two taluks,” said Bachegowda. He requested that similar services be started between other taluks as well.

Officers should pay attention to extending the bus services to the villages in the border areas. Students in most such places are forced to go to schools or colleges on foot due to lack of transport facilities, said Bachegowda.

“There have even been instances when students blocked the roads in protest against not being provided buses in the morning. The KSRTC officers should therefore consider the problems faced by the students and the public and try to solve them,” he added.

Deputy Commissioner Dr N Manjula, Assistant Commissioner Satish Kumar, Tahsildar Poornima, Zilla Panchayat member P N Munegowda, Taluk Panchayat members Murthy, P A Mohan and others were present on the occasion.

Cross Posting:

The newly introduced Mercedes Benz Multi-Axle buses of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation - "Airavat Club Class". There is one pair of these buses running Bangalore-Ernakulam (Via Hosur).

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-kBrdpYvk-6M/To8deX7Ri8I/AAAAAAAAFuc/ooaum_-1Vk4/s640/IMG_6489.jpg

The stickering quality was awful for this particular bus - the stickers felt as if they enlarged a low resolution image.

The timings of this bus are: Dep from Bangalore: 19:44. Dep from Ernakulam: 18:28.

I feel the departure time from Ernakulam is too early - it should be pushed to 19:30 or better 20:00.

Another Multi-Axle Merc is being added from the next week - so BNG-Ernakulam route will have 2x Merc Multi, 1x Volvo Multi and 1x AC Corona Sleeper!!!

I feel there're too many stickers for their Club Class branding.

Like:
---K.S.R.T.C on the windscreen. Font and colour looks much classier compared to two-axle volvos.
---Lettering on the sides.

Hate:
---The images of the teddy bear and that duck. Bit too many pictures on the side.

Anyway, I was checking their reservation system and it says 4 buses total for tomorrow(2 multi-axle, 2 normal Volvo), but only 3(all multi-axle) from 10th. Do they have any services that only run on weekends or are they removing a service? BLR-EKM

A KSRTC ride to the 1950s

http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/00804/30BGP2BUS_804155f.jpg

If you've empathised with your grandfather nostalgically harking back on one anna bus rides in his time, here's a book that might interest you.

Several facts regarding the public transport system have been documented in Ka. Ra. Ra. Sam. Itihasa (The history of the KSRTC) by K.N. Ingalagi, Chief Manager (MIS), Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC).

Everything from when the shift from petrol to diesel fuel happened (it was in 1953) to how many Mysore Government Road Transport Department (MGRTD) buses were out of action in 1950 (26, out of a fleet of 136) is available in this volume.

Mr. Ingalagi obtained a doctorate from Mysore University after researching on History of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation: The Present status and the Future for over six years. An abstract of his doctoral thesis has been brought out in the form of a book in Kannada by Karnataka Rajya Rasthe Sarige Samsthe Kannada Kriya Samithi.

A postgraduate in Social Welfare from Karnataka University, Mr. Ingalagi joined KSRTC in 1983 as a labour welfare officer and, thereafter, held managerial positions in KSRTC and BMTC.
Throwing light

He felt that several innovative works carried out by the KSRTC staff were unappreciated by the public and decided to document the growth of public transport through his thesis.

Kannada Kriya Samithi president Va.Cha. Channe Gowda said Mr. Ingalagi's work was the first of its kind in public transport in the country. Stating that the author had been unbiased in documenting the history, Mr. Gowda said the Nizam of Hyderabad had rightly been given the credit for starting government bus transport in 1932. Mr. Ingalagi has also written about the contributions of trade unions in the development of the sector.
The origin

Mr. Ingalagi has divided his research into seven chapters, which deal in detail with the origin of government-controlled public transport in the Hyderabad Karnataka region in 1932, formation of Bombay Road Transport Corporation, MGRTD, Bangalore Transport Company, Mysore State RTC and, thereafter, the KSRTC and finally, division of KSRTC into four RTCs.

The governments' move to nationalise road transport helped the public as it saved them from unregulated private operators, Mr. Ingalagi said. The then Mysore Government nationalised six routes in 1952.

Concessions

Non-gazetted government officials started getting a huge 75 per cent knocked off their fares in 1953 whereas the 50 per cent concession for students began in 1954. Inter-State services between Bangalore-Tirupati and Bangalore-Madikeri were started in 1955-56. The fares were six to eight paise a mile in 1949-50.

The book has a foreword from Pradhan Gurudatta, chairperson, Kuvempu Bhasha Bharathi Authority.

The Kannada Kriya Samithi is at No. 554, 5th Main, 2nd Cross, Bhuvaneshwarinagar, T. Dasarahalli.

That's bad. I get their whole idea of 'sleep like a baby' , but they should tone down the stickers, it's a bit like how trucks are decorated. Cheesy. I like VRL's new design. It's white, with only VRL logo on it. No extra stickers. Again, my personal opinion. (don't flame me :p)

Modern ones, as in? Do you mean they should go for LED boards?

The LED ones cost almost a Lakh - and for a bus that would stop once in 100kms or so, what is the need to have an LED board? These buses would not pickup passengers from the road side anyways - and the boards are just to let the passengers identify them when the bus is at a bus station (or at a pick-up point). The current boards do the job in a cost effective manner.

These buses would not pickup passengers from the road side anyways - and the boards are just to let the passengers identify them when the bus is at a bus station (or at a pick-up point). The current boards do the job in a cost effective manner.

Point taken sir!:) I know installing LED boards in intercity buses is a bad idea....
My point is that there has to be at least some difference between boards of ordinary buses and those of high-end luxury buses....
The boards and the buses aren't compatible with each other...:ohno:

And btw no LED board costs a lakh!!!!!!!

KSRTC keen on setting the ball rolling for IMTC (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/199036/ksrtc-keen-setting-ball-rolling.html)

A few years down the lane, the concept of multi-modal transportation will become a reality in the City.

The first Rs 1,700-crore Inter-Modal Transit Centre (IMTC) will come up at the Kempegowda Bus Terminal. The Metro station at Majestic, expected to come up by 2013, will be linked to the IMTC. The building to come up on 32.5 acres of land will house the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and the Bangalore Metro Transport Corporation (BMTC). The project is presently in the tender-processing phase and the selection of the firm by the KSRTC is expected to be over by December.

In three phases

A senior official from the KSRTC told Deccan Herald, “The project schedule is five years in three phases and construction will start before the completion of the Metro station. We are also awaiting for the handing over of 12.5 acres of land, which is temporarily with the BMRCL. The land will be handed over to us by November 2014.” Principal Secretary of the Transport Department, Shankarlinge Gowda said the integration of all forms of transport is necessary for the City and the transit centre will also house autorickshaw stands. “It will be truly multi-modal, only when the auto rickshaws are also brought in. The Metro is said to carry one million people when it functions fully. The autos are already carrying two million,” he added.

The KSRTC, which is overseeing the project, will bear no cost. It will only have to provide land required for the private construction firm, which will take up the project. An official from the KSRTC said the work on the IMTC will not wait for the completion of the Metro station at Majestic. “The IMTC project can start as and when required by us. Once the tender process is through, we will push for construction,” he added. The official added that the floors allotted for the KSRTC and the BMTC will run first and the Metro station will be linked later. As per the vertical plan of the building, the passengers getting off the Metro will walk towards the BMTC terminal, then to the IMTC concourse, from where, the KSRTC terminal will be connected.

Connectivity

The railway station will also be connected through a passage, Gowda said. “When the con struction begins, there will be major disturbances at the Kempegowda Bus Terminal, which are inevitable. However, temporary arrangements will be made,” the KSRTC official said.

+1, after GQ BLR-MUM/PUNE travel has become overnight journey and travel experience has improved a lot. currently more than 45 Volvo/MB and 15 AL buses are plying on this route and our IR is sleeping and still takes full 24 hrs to travel and bus travel has killed the AC travel in trains on this route
