The long, slender form of the Tower represents one of the latest technological challenges in skyscraper construction.
Opened in April 2002, the 54-storey residential building rises 243 metres into the air over a tiny surface area of 900 square metres.
In a strategic position in Dubai, on the exclusive Sheykh Zayed Road not far from the Emirates Towers, The Tower was built using innovative technologies permitting achievement of great height on a limited base surface.
Architects Khatib & Alami, winners of a competition held by Union Properties in 1999, were assisted by Nasa Multiplex in developing a structural system which reduced work at the site to a minimum, speeding up construction and offering economic benefits for the project.
The construction has a composite structure, with a central core of reinforced concrete housing vertical links and facilities, and an external system constructed of steel tubes buried in cement and filled in with plates of glass.
The floors of post-stressed prefabricated concrete rest on steel plates anchored to the central core and external uprights of the building.
These technologies permitted the tower to be built at a speed of one storey every three days without excessive bulk at the base.
The building's outer facades are covered in glass and marked by slender steel pilaster strips which cross over on technical planes to form a pointed arch motif with an Arabian flavour.
An eight-level parking lot was built on the lot behind the building for Tower residents, who will also enjoy a health centre and swimming pool on the parking lot roof.
The two buildings are connected by a series of internal walkways and garden-lined pedestrian routes.
There are two entrances to The Tower on the ground floor, as well as management offices and a café.
The building's lower levels, from the second to the thirtieth floor, may be accessed directly from the parking lot. There are six three-bedroom apartments on each floor.
The upper levels, from the thirty-fourth to the forty-ninth floor, are accessed from Sheikh Zayed Road; there are twelve one-bedroom apartments on each floor.
The tower culminates in a pyramid-shaped aluminium and glass spire with walls like sails that enhance the lightness of its form.
The 372 apartments were designed to permit optimal distribution of space and finished with class for luxury and comfort.
Common areas and access routes are designed with great care and built with advanced high performance materials perfectly in keeping with the overall design of the building.
Corridors and elevators are finished with materials from the Le Pietre del Mulino collection of the Italian firm IRIS Ceramica. The architects selected Castello, Monterivo e Valeggio.
The delicate hues of earth tones and elegant old-fashioned look of Pietre del Mulino warm the atmosphere in these common spaces, high traffic areas requiring materials offering good resistance to wear and easy maintenance.

Pretty unique design...I didn't realize it was that tall (796 ft)...I've seen this one before and thought it was like a 500 footer. That building has be pretty massive then. :) 8/10

8/10 - Takes to the sky well, and I like the contrast between the dark glass and light trim of the facade. The facade catches the light well, the trim helps the height, and the lattices extending outward are a good touch.
I couldn't quite tell about the top and the base, though...

The building is interesting, its nice. I would give it 8 out of 10. It fits in nicely with the other buildings in the sheikh zayed road

Decent, but not my type.

I changed my mind, I just came from dubai yesterday and boy is this tower sooooooooo nice especiall at night. The pics are very bad and once i have the privelage of posting attachments i would send some really good ones of this tower. I would give it 9.5 out of 10.

I really don't like this one... looks better in the renderings... it's way too slim... the glass is a pretty azure... but the ornamentation is very ungainly... and that top, oh dear!

Looks like an existing Venetian tower. I don't know what to say about it any more than that.

Maybe it looks better in person, nevertheless it's somewhat interesting. 7.

Says there are aot of internal prolbems with this tower
Water leaks, Roofs falling in, bad fixtures, as the tower only has a limited life span. I dont know how much is correct but can say there have been problems !
Was even talk abuout moving every one to 21st Cenrty Tower down the road.
Well that what the people living there say
Still Those problems dont impact on how it looks which is pretty great !

I didn't realize there was so many problems int it. But over all, it quite artistic and unique. It compliments the Dubai skyline very well and it's a whole lot nicer at night. It should be taller though. 8/10 :) :) :) :)

i like how this building seems to flare out. i like this one way better than the emirates towers and burj al arab (cuz of their ripoff spires).

Im not very familiar with islamic architecture so I take your word for it, and the fact that it resembles something related to the islamic culture makes it a good concept despite the object itself might not work in aesthetic terms.

At first I didnt like this building but its grown on me. I like the nice balance in the proportions and the setbacks are nice. The facade is a little weak. It would look great except the weird distortive glass on the bottom and the oversized plastic looking arches hurt the overall nice exterior.

It's alright but I'm not crazy about the odd desighn. 8/10

The steel deco and the spire of this building are VERY distinctive and make it instantly recognizable. Great cladding by the way. I'm not completely convinced with the proportions, though, I think it could have used a little bit more setbacks. But that's a minor complaint :-)

A lot of towers in Dubai do an overkill in trying to stand out and get attention. This one looks great, and it's not grossly tall or over-decorated. I think the height is about right for the building.
