I just found it yesterday and i would like to know if, by any chance,
somebody will stay at Le Parker Meridien Hotel in very near future.
Because i believe that would be the best vantage point for fresh views of One57.
At least for all who only can access the hotel.
An office in highfloor of Carnegie Hall Tower would be a much better vantage point, of course!
But i think we don't have any forumer here with such luck, otherwise we would already have seen such pics :)


If i had more time and money right now then i would come over and book a room there...
but unfortunately i have to wait at least till Jan2012 b4 i get holidays :(

Has cladding appeared yet?

The cladding is on site and there was one site that reported cladding was up ("getting it's skin from the ground up" or something to that effect), but so far we have not seen it.

Here I have my new roof height construction diagram:

1WTC = 327 meters or 1074 feet out of 418 meters or 1371 feet
4WTC = Approximately 208 meters or 682 feet out of 298 meters or 977 feet
1 57 = Approximately 133 meters or 436 feet out of 306 meters or 1005 feet

(Note: I used the 418 meter figure for 1WTC when measured from the lowest above ground entrance and I used the 298 meter figure for 4WTC.) :cheers:

It's amazing that One57 is going to rise so far above CitySpire Center, Carnegie Hall Tower, and Metropolitan Tower.

And speaking of that view from the park, It's also a relief, as none of those 3 towers are notably attractive.

I was looking for the elevator shafts too. And we've known for a long time, that there's wasn't going to be a core.

There's loads of supertalls without cores, there's different options that a concrete core. Besides this building is concrete not steel (well it's re-enforced) so the strength is much more stronger

I'm guessing that it is under the wooden platform to the left of the floorplate in these photos... The platform seems to be built through the floor, indicating that there is a rectangular opening in the concrete in that area.

The only other place it could be would be behind the crane in the photos... But I don't think there is enough space there, and it wouldn't make sense to put the elevators near the outside edge of the building (that is very valuable window space). So under the wooden platform would be my best guess.

Did the residents in the upper floors of the Metropolitan Tower have conniptions over this building, or are they starting to now? One57 is going to block a huge portion of their park views. Views from CitySpire Center may also be affected.

I doesn't really make any difference since those are full floor apartments..

Plus, it has to be back on that Central Park side since this is the tallest part of building..Elevators run to the last floor, sometimes even to the roof..

I forgot that these were full-floor apartments. This is why it would make sense to have the shaft on a side or even a corner. Sure, it is valuable window space, but these are apartments, not offices.

If I had to put money on it now, that is what I would guess... But others have brought up good points - could be behind the windscreens or the crane. Maybe if we can get some photos from a different angle we will be able to tell.

From the ground, the cladding is only visible from a tight angle. As they go up, they should clear the building on the left and become visible.

I mean near the bottom of the tower where there is very little space between this building and it's two neighbors on either side.

Not necessarily. Buildings are demolished all the time in NY. You never know if the building next to you is gone at some point in the future.

To answer the question about the gap between One57 and the next building..That small gap is there because, believe it or not, buildings move..If there's strong wind, building sway, possible earthquake, building moves, etc..Those are not moves like one ft..At least not at street level..But there are smaller moves..One57 is way taller than those buildings next door, so it has bigger moves..If they build it wall to wall, as time passes by, walls of One57 would hit other walls and they would crack..At first those cracks would be small but it would be bigger and bigger with time..And you know what that means..That's why is there small gap..

Usually those gaps get filled with some termo/sound proof material..Or it can just stay empty..And cladding that comes on the front side of building covers it so it's not visible..

^^I guess this building coud sway quite a bit. Easily inches. Nice to see the 1st pieces of cladding. It won't take long before we'll see it on the front side. :)

I see. Well, there are a lot of people here that provide some very interesting information, though knowing how strong a building is, is a question that barely anyone knows for certain. Except the engineers and architect(s) of the building of course. Therefore a little strange to ask it over here because the engineers and architects of this building are no member of this website (as far as we know). Otherwise we probably would've known.

Kinda..But you have to let building to sway to some point..That's the way how building takes force of the wind, earthquake, etc..If you build it too strong, wind or earthquake would brake it just like that..

Went by the sight today. The original crane is now being taken down. It's cab is already below the height of the building and the highest brace to the building has already been removed.

Only one pain of cladding is visible from the street. Nothing at all yet on the 57th or 58th street sides - only on the mid block part of the building. Hopefully that will change soon.

With such amounts it is easy to get mixed up by the numbers. $ 98,500,000.- is the correct number I believe. ;) Still the difference between the numbers will not have an effect on my decision to buy one, or not. ;) It is "just a little bit more" then I can come up with. :D

The syndicate, led by BofA as administrative agent, will finance a portion of the $1.4 billion project. That doesn't seem to be happening soon. The demolition seems frozen. Went by yesterday and took pics.

And the F&#&ing supermarket there shows no sign of moving. :ohno: Might be time for some constructive arson. :lol:

I walked by 217-225 West 57th/220 W58th on 1 Nov 2011, and demolition was in full swing.

The black netting has been there a long time, and I haven't seen any visible progress in the amount of demolition in a while.

Yes. They were demolishing the school on W58th and on 221 W57th.

More cladding up on the side. It does look like it has interesting coloration and patterns. Can't wait until it is on the front or back so it can be clearly seen.

The crane situation is bizarre. The original crane is lower than the new one but they didn't change its height from last week. Normally on this project when they do something they do it quickly. So they still seem to be using the original crane for something.

Right now this thing seems to be L shaped. Which part goes to the top - the part parrallel to 57th street or the part perpendicular to it?

The part parallel to 57th street is already VERY narrow. Whoever lives here better not have any fear of heights!

Awesome updates. I was up there earlier this week and this thing is deceptively gigantic, because it hides behind, and in between buildings so well, or I should say so unfortunately. The glass looks really cool as well, but won't know for sure until there's more of it on the building. Thanks again for the photos!

Yes last time I drove by it was about 18 floors high, and when you drive directly underneath it and stare up at it it's a beast.

Once this surpasses the top of the Essex House sign this will instantly get a lot more attention and be taken more seriously. It will simply be impossible to ignore.

BTW, look at how narrow those upper floors are. Is that narrow part going all the way to the top?

The 58th street wide will be narrow and go up this way to the top.
The 57th street side will be wider, with the setbacks.

But from a distance, these setbacks will add mass and make the tower appear bolder. When seen from the north. Just have a closer look at the renders, they explain more then enough.

What great pictures. This building is a monster, this very tall, but is only halfway. The glass looks very good, not really left to be desired.

They'll eventually take it down, unless the developer is willing to pay ~$1,700 an hour to use a single crane. ;)

Are you sure that's correct? It's £1,400 a week in the UK to hire a tower crane.

It is strange the way they do the cladding - one narrow strip going up rather than having go all the way around or at least cover one full side.

I confess that I have mixed feelings about the use of random tinted class panels. On the one hand I can see how this will make a 'glassy' structure more interesting and avoid banality, but on the other hand I'm wondering if in time it will just look cheesy and kitschy and dated.
