View Full Version : ANTWERPEN | In 3D
SittingDuck December 29th, 2008, 08:41 PM Hi. Not sure if you guys noticed yet, but over the past year Antwerp has received many 3D models in Google Earth. It went from approximately 3 buildings (KBC toren, Centraal Station, Stadhuis) to having more than 80 blocks/churches/individual buildings.
The buildings you will see there now are constantly being improved and replaced. Due to the slow review process for these models, some take months to appear, and thus some you see will be old and outdated.
To stay up to date, you can visit the collection of 3D Antwerp architecture here:
http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/cldetails?mid=f4ac1a6063045cd7cedd98947ec71854
2 guys have done the most of it, one of them being yours truly. :)
The cathedral has recently been completed but will not appear in Google Earth for some time. Most skyscrapers have been completed, such as the theaterbuilding or the Antwerp tower, as well as Oudaan. These models will be improved and as I said, they can all be viewed in their most up to date form on the link I provided.
Here are some some previews. Make sure you have the newest version of Google Earth and that the terrain option is 'on'.

Enjoy! Some feedback would be greatly appreciated. Before complaining about some models, check if some new ones have been made yet. Here is an example of some improvement on the way: (The old model is on the right).

As a matter of fact, they switched our first and last names around.
Indeed! If anyone believes they can top our models, please do! Or maybe even better, simply help out and add some blocks to the city. :) A city of 400,000 people is difficult to model with two people.
I am also busy with the creator of http://www.everyoneweb.be/wilmarsdonk/ to reconstruct some of the lost polderdorpen. This work can be found here:
http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/cldetails?mid=94a2df64ce64ee3bafd44db2839d9bfa
Work will progress rapidly as street-maps are found. We have a large enough collection of photos but more are always welcome.

theonot December 30th, 2008, 01:06 PM Fantastic work guys. I already noticed that Antwerp is receiving more and more buildings in google earth. Now we know who is behind it.
Any plans to model the MAS and the Westkaai Towers ? They are nearing completion and would be great addition to the fantastic line-up of older and newer buildings you have already created.
About a year ago, i developed some plans for left bank using google sketchup. See pictures below. Maybe i should restart this, so that we have more people working on Antwerp.

antigoon99 December 30th, 2008, 02:07 PM keep up the good work!!!
RubenT December 30th, 2008, 03:18 PM I'm heavily impressed! Especially the Hendrik-consience square and the cathedral look amazing. Hope to see more of the old centre, it would be amazing to wander trough it in 3D.
Theonot's picture really shows how perfect Scheldt's left bank is for a highrise-cluster. It could be a second Pudong if we had enough money. Build it, now!

I was planning to do the Westkaai Towers ASAP. I just asked on the thread dedicated to them about their exact dimensions, as I have no reference size/positioning from the Google Earth images.
Not certain about the MAS, its a bit too complicated and I am a bit too lazy. Also I'm not the biggest fan of this brick.
If you want to help on Antwerp, you ought to either completely make existing buildings, or simply make them in gray and send them to me to finish off. If you are more interested in making plans, try to do the Londen Tower and Westkaai towers perfectly in gray.
@ SittingDuck: as i understand from your replies you can read dutch and i assume it's also your mother tongue? there's no obligation to use dutch or so but it's also not forbidden gelijk ge wilt
I can read it just fine, and it is my mother tongue, but it has been years since I have really spoken/ written it, so I will have to use English I'm afraid! (te veel DT fouten :) )
Hope to see more of the old centre, it would be amazing to wander trough it in 3D.
These buildings are for obvious reasons the most difficult to do. 2 large blocks I have yet to complete adjacent the cathedral have been postponed again and again because I simply don't have the time/patience for works that take 4/5 days. This is why KR= did the cathedral and it is fantastic. Probably the greatest model in Google Earth. Zij trots, Antwerpen! [sic]
Also, I have done alot of work on Ekeren, just to the north of Antwerp. Many of the large structures of Luchtbal are also completed but not yet appearing in Google Earth, the langblokken, the canada torens, de kerk, the GM factory, the Punt aan de Lijn, etc.
The UA campus' to the South of Antwerp are also modeled (excluding campus Drie Eiken - I hate those guys :) )
I'm very interested to do the old stadskern inbetween the Vleeshuis and Het Steen, but right now they are demolishing half of it! Also interested in all the projects happening in the eilandje. The kattendijk (westkaai?) torens will probably be my favorite to do after the Londen tower.

Are these rough sketches of the tower locations, or based on an actual, precise plan? I suspect the two new towers currently under construction are not perfect squares.
Ivan January 2nd, 2009, 12:28 PM These are the footprints of the bases of the towers and locations on the site
SittingDuck January 3rd, 2009, 01:48 AM These are the footprints of the bases of the towers and locations on the site
Yes but how precise are they? Is this a rough estimate you have made based on looking at the towers, or have you found a government planning diagram somewhere?
Ivan January 3rd, 2009, 12:09 PM I have a footprint of the towers at home in a folder
This image is the rough representation of that footprint

don't think so :) only assumed that you still might alter it since you hadn't posted it in this topic but only in the harbour building's instead. it's good like this if you ask me ;)

Ivan January 15th, 2009, 08:22 PM yeah, thanks, I've noticed before visiting the Havenhuis topic :)
You could make a few simulations for Antwerpen Hogerop if you like :)
SittingDuck January 15th, 2009, 08:34 PM To Ivan: Just say what and I'll see what I can do.
To Meurisse: I would need some very exact diagrams and statistics about height, width etc. The bridge is very complex and anyways it is still far far away. I may make a very simple/rough version so people can just get a better feel for it.

Edit - Fixed. But you know there is also a difference between some of the renders we have been shown. There are two main different ones that deal with the white pillar in the front. I am basing my model of the image where the bottom half doesn't stick out so much.
SimCityFanatic January 18th, 2009, 11:01 PM Maybe SittingDuck can help me with this Q.. The pictures on Google Earth (taken from Antwerp) date from June 2004.. They're starting to look very dated, when do we get new satellite pictures??
greetz

That's a very good eye you have there! This is something I thought I could get away with to the casual viewer, the lighting on the photos I had of the kazerne did not match the shadows on the ground in Google Earth, so I just switched them! : )
Maybe SittingDuck can help me with this Q.. The pictures on Google Earth (taken from Antwerp) date from June 2004.. They're starting to look very dated, when do we get new satellite pictures??

I'm afraid I don't know! If only they were updated, I would know exactly where I could place my models of the MAS, Londen Tower, and Westkaai torens.
Here is the new model of the day, made by my buddy KR= . You may have seen these high-rise flats when driving around the ring, the Residenties Rivierenhof, Borgerhout:

SimCityFanatic January 19th, 2009, 05:23 PM sittingduck; ok, no problem.. you're doing a wonderful job anyway!
I wonder if the paying version of google earth has up-to-date maps...
SittingDuck January 25th, 2009, 09:50 PM Here is the latest addition to Antwerp; actually it is not really an addition, more a replacement.
http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/2371/ugccomparexx7.jpg (http://www.imagehosting.com/)
As you can see, the new version is a significant improvement on the 'pancake' I made almost a year ago :ohno: .
I remade this model because KR= hinted to me he is working on the Opera and Antwerp Tower, and so I wanted to spruce up all the surrounding buildings. : ) I think the Koningklijke Atheneum will be next, the front is all wrong and they just finished renovating in real life, so it will be very up to date!

город February 9th, 2009, 10:56 AM Well done!
Do you plan on adding all buildings and statues in the city center? Sounds like an awful lot of work...
SittingDuck February 9th, 2009, 11:04 AM It took me almost 1 year to make 137 models. About 80 of these are in Antwerp, the rest in Ekeren or around the globe. I intend to stick more closely to Antwerp now. If I can complete another 140 models in 1 year an extremely large part of the city center will be done. Also, I am being helped :)
Quimb February 9th, 2009, 11:13 AM Aah mooi!

Not sure what 'verschwunden' means but the cathedral isn't in Google Earth yet because it hasn't been reviewed yet. It will probably appear sometime within 40 days.

Hah! You'd be surprised by how close the cathedral came to demolition..:|
I don't know what caused this bug, but I couldn't see it. Looked like one of the buildings by the ring.
Benonie April 17th, 2009, 10:56 PM ^^ Indeed, I think it's that building near the new Palace of Justice.
I only have this funny bug on my PC, not on my laptop... I will clean him one of these days.
Anyway, there were plans to tear down the cathedral in the past... imagine...
It's a funny sight anyway.
Aere April 19th, 2009, 04:31 PM Good thing that Jan Blom saved it from Napoleon. Bonaparte wanted to expand the docks as much as possible and the cathedral was in his way. Jan Blom, the official city architect, managed by postponing and delaying things.
Even ceremonies had been forbidden in the cathedral by the French. Untill 1802 it would remain that way. In 1802 the pope convinced Napoleon that, for the wellbeing of people, ceremonies should be allowed again.
Nowadays a small street that leads from the Groenplaats to the Handschoenmarkt is named after Jan Blom.

We made all the textured/detailed buildings.

(sorry for the dutch)

in sketchup : tools > google earth > get current view
uw model correct plaatsen op de luchtfoto
tools > google earth > place model
