If you could choose three places to go on a nice getaway, where would they be and why?
Mines would be:
Chicago, to look at buildings
Paris, to go to the Eiffel Tower
Hawaii, for the water

Though a tour of Europe also would be cool too. Would do it now (or study abroad) but it's too damn expensive. Looking how life is on the other side of pond would be interesting, and I'd see if it was the "utopia" that Europeans in this forum make it out to be, especially Scandinavia.:laugh:

But, I honestly don't see myself off the continent anytime in the future. Maybe go to Canada a few times, blah.

Funny story - well... a story :) - on my first visit to Califonia I went to go swimming in San Francisco... comming straight from Denmark and having been fed US TV shows about the westcost for 20+ years I thought I could go right in..

I did wonder why I was the only one heading out into the water and I quickly found out - brrrrrrrrr.. even in LA and San Diego it was freezing and way too salty!

I guess I made the same mistake for southern Australia, thinking it was warm based on the beach culture projected in the media? :dunno:

What water temps do you get in the summer if I may ask?

No. Although it is very interesting and cool, and I would love to do it too. The idea of seeing the entire world is amazing. My school has a lot of partnerships with European schools, and if it wasn't for my program and it being so expensive, I'd go in a heartbeat.

I used to think the same thing.

Although I have never been to the West Coast (yet), I used to think that the water was warmer because of all the surfing.

Water temps in the summer here is usually 20-22 degrees. Warmer, but nothing compared to the warm water in Florida and other areas in the South US, where it gets warmer than 30 degrees. Once you get north of Boston, the water temps are cold no matter the time of year.

Personally, I think the ocean water around here is too polluted and disgusting to swim in anyway.

Although I have never been to the West Coast (yet), I used to think that the water was warmer because of all the surfing. Yeah it was really a shock to me, looking back I guess I should haev expected it ( the fog is there for a reason ) it was just a no brainer to me that a beach in California would be nice to swim in..

I guess TV does make you stupid :D

Yeah Florida & Co has awesome water temps.. if only the damn sharks didn't scare me so much I'd spend my entire vacation in the water :D

Personally, I think the ocean water is too polluted and disgusting to swim in anyway. What?

Well I guess that depends on the location..

Polution isn't really the problem here in Denmark, our problem is that the water around the islands are very shallow with very little circulation so it heats up and becomes perfect for algees..

And in the warmest weeks they can really be a problem to the wildlife and pretty nasty to the beachgoers with slimey green "soup" everywhere

Yeah, I edited that, I meant here. The water here is too damn polluted. You aren't even allowed to eat the fish or lobster off the shore because of the pollution. And the water is disgustingly brown-green.

If I ever want to go to the beach, I go to Maryland or Delaware, not far from Washington DC. The water there is cleaner and warmer. Problem is though the beach towns are tacky.

Perceptions of beach culture is funny. I was in Japan recently, where one of my friends was asked by a local about surfing.

Being from Melbourne, where the nearest surf beach is two hours away (Melbourne is situated in a sheltered bay), we knew nothing about surfing. Beaches are cool places to hang out and have parties, but that's about it as far as we were concerned. :P

I know more about snowboarding than surfing. :)

You guys are a bunch of wusses  you can swim in the sea when it's 15C, it's invigorating. Some beaches in cooler climates are all the more beautiful for not being choked full of sunbathing tourists imo. You can't beat riding your horse in the shallows on a deserted beach in winter.

I like the idea of a five-year cycling tour around Europe and North Africa/Middle-East.

FREKI
January 6th, 2009, 01:28 PM
How come the female and male upper body are deemed different, generally speaking. Here there is gender equality by law, so females are free to go topless anywhere they want in public where male would be accepted to do so, be it the beach (http://multimedia.ekstrabladet.dk/eb/archive/00330/Bellevue__330586d.jpg), the city (http://members.optushome.com.au/vergil/blog/uploaded_images/speedbandits-755328.jpg) or the public pools (http://media.avisen.dk/GetImage.ashx?imageid=77972&sizeid=4) for that matter..

Genetalia is not forbidden either, but there is laws about indecency - and flashing private parts near kids or in a provoking or sexual manner towards anyone else will not be tollerated and will most likely result in the police asking you to cover your parts or even fining you if real over the top.. ( if sexual herrasment you'd probable also be arrested for public disturbance )

So people interested in being fully nude should stick to the beaches or parks where such is expected.. the city isn't really the place legal or not.. :)

I'm not so much into "vacations", I'm more into traveling, which is more about exploring and less about relaxing, though you can have very relaxed days as well. As evidence of what I am saying, I tend to lose large amounts of weight when I'm away from home from all the walking I do...always look great when I come back from a foreign country :)

As for where I'd like to travel to...well, internationally:

1) Guatemala - when it gets safer. Very inexpensive, fascinating culture (Maya, Garifuna), indigenous languages and villages, ruins, laid-back beaches that aren't too touristy, interesting cuisine.
2) England / Scotland - Cheap pound right now, and I've heard all the city names but I can't associate them with anything from experience. I think of Britain as being the U.S.'s "cultural parent", so naturally the similarities and differences in culture there interest me.
3) Italy / Albania / Greece - I'd love to go on a trip starting in Rome, going through Naples and southern Italy, maybe even Sicily, and then on to Albania and Greece.
4) Japan
5) India / Pakistan
6) Netherlands / Germany / Poland

Domestic:

1) Chicago - Only an eight hour drive, still haven't been
2) Boston - I hear it's a beautiful city
3) New York - would love to return
4) New Mexico - Navajo culture / ruins, mountains, desert, caves, Southwestern food, their own Spanish culture, etc;
5) Florida - Probably going kayaking in the Everglades for a week in March....for only $350, everything included! (Through my school)

Latin America...........wait ...... I'm already there :D

Friendly people, hot girls, learnable languages (spanish and portuguese) as they are close to french meaning you can interact with the locals, hot weather (ok not everywhere), good music, fascinating social and political processes, good food (in Peru at least...), fascinating hidden places.

What's not to like? :D

Ok Israel/Palestine are also on my list, I can't never go there once in my life at least.
And of course other countries in the region (Egypt, Syria, Iran...)

Also want to check west Africa, especially Senegal and Nigeria.

And then you can't forget China and India which are worlds unto themselves and that I'd like to see one day if I could, although not being able to interact with the locals puts me off (same with Japan and SEA).

And although I didn't care at all about Russia and Eastern Europe before, I've started to be interested in those places the last few years. And then of course France's neighboring countries which are always a pleasure to visit. Belgian 'moules frites', British music, Spanish nightlife and italian chaos :D

In truth, every place interest me, minus a few locations I'm really not interested in going too (Australia for example...) :D

Nothing special boring about Australia, I just mentioned it because it's continent (as Africa and "Southern America"), it's same boring as Slovakia, Germany, France or Spain if you would feel better. I just don't see differences between western countries, they are too small and if there wasn't different language you would have problem to say if you are in Spain, France, Australia or Germany - too much developed countries - that's why I'm preffering something different as Southeast Asia (TH/MY/VN...) or Iran/Turkey (especially Iran, from what I've heard from people who have been there, Iranians to strangers/guests are even more polite than southeast asians) or Mexico/USA. OK, I know Turkey and USA are western countries, but for me are at least a little bit personally interesting and Turkey/Iran is behind corner, just few hours in plane/bus so I can go there anytime.

Good trip would be Bratislava-Istanbul with some LCC (SkyEur e.g.) or bus (just change in Sofia), then travelling through Turkey and Iran, then from Iran with LCC Air Arabia to Goa for some relax (otherwise I don't advise India outside of Goa) and from India to Malaysia and we are finally home in SEA. :-)

All from my plans can be done on one trip (except Mexico/USA which are low on my priorities list). I wanted to go overland (I just later discovered it's more expensive overland than by air with AA) from Europe to India, but had problems with pakistanian embassy, so I've just wasted money on iranian visa which I already had and went just to Turkey by bus and then to India with AA.

Btw. do you have czech/slovak origin? Because your nickname in Czech/Slovak language means "reason".

no big deal about Goa, OK, it's the best part of India (maybe with Pushkar), but nothing special against much cleaner Thailand and with much nicer people, Goa is very good low cost relaxing place, you can exist there with 150-200€/month (accommodation+food) but it's similar with BKK/KL, thai sea is a little bit expensive, but you will get much more for your money, transculent water and white sand (and parties on Ko Phangan and etc etc.), not comparable with Goa

Hello Philly neighbor!

I am older than most of you and have travelled to between 90 - 100 countries on six continents and will tell you there are hundreds of wonderful places. If you haven't been outside the US I recommend:

EUROPE - Paris, London, Rome, Amsterdam, Prague.
Wanna see beautiful out of the way places? Bruges, Belgium; the Fjords of Norway; Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland; Toledo, Spain are excellant! Merrie Olde Englande?- Try Chester, York, and Winchester ... I love these places.

FAR EAST - Bangkok, Hong Kong, Bali, Kyoto.
Off the beaten track: Bagan, Myanmar; Siem Reap (Angkor Wat), Cambodia; Lhasa, Tibet. Thailand is my absolute Favorite.

AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND All of it! Wonderful!

SOUTH AMERICA - Rio De Janeiro and Buenos Aires.
Fantastic destinations also include: Macchu Piccu and Cuzco, Peru; Iguacu Falls; Cartagena, Colombia; and Caracas, Venezuela. Haven't been to Chile yet but the National Parks there are outstanding.

Middle East - Egypt and Israel. In Egypt, don't just see the pyrimids, go down to Luxor and Aswan. In Israel see the contrast of modern, hip, wild Tel Aviv with historic and very spiritual holy Jerusalem.

India- Rajastan, Delhi, Varanasi and the Ganges, Agra with the Taj Mahal, Kulu Valley and Manali to see the Himalayas.

Off the beaten track: Bagan, Myanmar; Siem Reap (Angkor Wat),

I wouldn't be so sure about that anymore. Siem Reap seems to be a popular destination now days, especially with Eurpoeans and East Asians.

for partying and generally having a good time with excellent weather or lazing by the pool all day then las vegas, everything there is 24/7, you don't have to go looking for bars open at 4am  vegas is a town specially built for tourism, other american cities were not built with tourism in mind

for scenery and facilities then french or swiss alps, zermatt and in particular chamonix are terrific, its the himalayas without needing oxygen or days of backbreaking travel. the view from on top of aiguille du midi on a clear sunny day is breathtaking, giant snow capped peaks as far as the eye can see in every direction

btw i thought tenerife away from the horrible party area of playa de las americas (ie veronicas strip) is an amazing place; los gigantos, teide national park (stunning) and Masca Valley in such stark contrast to the south of the island

sadly 95% of people go to tenerife to party and laze on the beach all day and never see the wonderful sites that island and nearby island of La Gomera offer the tourist

Chicago, of course, for its new skyscrapers. Paris is nearby (often been there) and Hawaï is too far away, looks always boring.

True. (I was there 2 years ago) Rather touristy with - get this: American, Mexican, Italian and Israeli restaurants!!! There are even gay bars and night clubs.

However, the vast and overwhelming majority of Americans have never heard of it much less been there, and this thread was started by fellow Philadelphian; so to most of us it is exotic and out of the way.

. Thailand is my absolute Favorite.

Actually there are one or two countries that I personally enjoyed more than Thailand... but those place are enjoyable only for the most adventurous travellers ( like me ).

I have to say that Thailand is the most touristic country for ALL type of travellers - backpacker, families, teens, aged, Mid-range, luxury , fromfaint-hearted to the most adventurous .

right now I feel like visiting cities that are close to the one I recently moved to (Frankfurt): would enjoy seeing Hamburg (canals, Hafen City project, the old Speicherstadt), Aachen (for its historic importance), the Ruhr Gebiet (to get an impression of industrial Germany), Dresden (for its baroque architecture and reconstruction project). When it's warmer I wouldn't mind visiting the Nord See, Ostsee, and Erzgebirge.

speaking of frankfurt there is some lovely countryside 2hr or so west of the city, rolling hills, tiny villages amongst the glens, picturepostcard stuff in truth. luxembourg city is lovely and about 3 hours from frankfurt, trier with its roman ruins is a little closer

as was said earlier Siem Reap is touristy destination and it could be off the beat track maybe 5 years ago

talking about Petronas TT - no big deal again, it's much much lower than KL Tower (because of location) and view from PTT is terrible compared to KLT, don't forget visit in Malaysia also Melaka. can't decide which city I love more if KL or BKK, they are both great, KL is much cleaner and calmer (it's much smaller) and you can go almost everywhere by walk especially if you want to relax you can go to close big gardens, but Bangkok is Bangkok, there are Thai people, I think that would be enough reasons for BKK ;-)

Internationally, it would be a road trip in the U.S., experiencing the different foods that are native to each region, a trip down I-95 would get you great food from Philly Cheesesteaks, Maryland Crabcakes, Maine Lobsters, Southern BBQ, NY Street Food, and many more.
