This would be the tallest building in Japan, but the Tokyo Sky Tree would eclipse this one as tallest structure.

I am happy that Japan is finally getting some taller buildings, and in Osaka! Osaka is one of my favorite cities. The people there are some of the most hospitable I have ever met.

This is a nice, subtle design, It will mesh well with Osaka's existing skyline.

Hey, not bad! I like all the trees they have on the different tiers.

I don't get it though. Japan is a small island with hardly any room for expansion, they have super dense cities like Tokyo but never build any really tall buildings to conserve space. China on the other hand, is massive and has plenty of room for expansion, yet there are so many huge buildings going up.

^^ More like the tallest building in Japan....not the tallest structure...Tokyo Sky tree w/c is U/C is 611 m high....311 m higher than this building..or twice the height of this building:)

Abeno district, is where the Abenobashi Terminal Building stands, a terminal with railways such as Kintetsu and JR and the subway (Midosuji and Tanimachi lines) entering into the district , and boasting 800,000 passengers who get on and off each day. Within the premises of our largest scale terminal, we plan to build a complex building called “Tower Annex” (tentative name) the highest-rise building of its kind in Japan-with 59 stories above the ground and 5 underground stories, comprising approximately 210,000m2 of total floor area and approximately 300m high. The facility consists of a train station, department store, offices, hotel, art museum and observatory. It is a big project combining our four core businesses including railway, retail, real estate and hotel & leisure facilities. We aim to complete the project in the spring of 2014.

kidding aside, if earthquake hits, this thing will be demolished in matter of seconds.

anyway, from what I see inthe renders, there are at least 5 separate towers, is the construction gonna be like for sears tower where the structure is divided into sub-towers?

I searched for some information on this project, but official info is scarce. But just like other Japanese projects there are some blogs that are already following the construction closely.

But it's not under construction yet, but they've started to demolish the old building. And as usual in Japan that means that the part of the old building that is demolished right now is completely covered so you can't really see anything going on.

Both pictures are from the last few days.

This is just the start of the demolition, so it will probably take a while for the actual construction to start so that this thread can be moved to the U/C section.

I also found a more detailed picture of the footbridge over the crossing at the foot of the tower, it looks quite nice.

I expect that many more blogs will follow when the actual construction of Japans 1st supertall high rise building will start, so you can expect more then enough picture updates when it's going up.

OMG I just felt like I lost something ...
you kidding me , the building will give way to that tasteless thing, well not completely tasteless , in japan the cant do that even if they try , but they tried pretty hard on this one ...
I like japan because of what it is now , it is special , the attention that has been paid in building this new-old era , those maple white leaf fences , I dont want them to be gone
I want to touch them before ...
there is no reason to destroy that , they have plenty of that in the world now
just build it somewhere else
think, that huge plaza can stand by itself , its huge enough , there are no buildings in japan that are that wide/big , its not that sort of style ... its the little things that matter ... that grow into bigger things ... thats where the value is! >:(
well its gone already , what am I scrreaming about here ...

I remember there was a series called abenobashi shopping arcade , thats where the nostalgia is from ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJy-7l6JCiY

and this is what I mean by small japan
http://www.panoramio.com/photo/18736767 , just look at that little roof ,so cozy , caring , nobody will make a little shop alley like that but the japanese , they have this sort of special care thing , Im not an ass licker I swear , I really think that they have this very europen trait , they do with buildings what italians do with food
btw browse around the town you may find something interesting , something really american :D

The demolition is progressing well, they are already below street level.

They probably still have 2 underground levels to demolish before the actual construction can start, that means that they are a little bit behind schedule since it should have finished in December with the construction start this month. But January has just begun and it could still begin later on in the month.

But this year we will see the start of the 1st supertall skyscraper in Japan! :)

I made a wrong statement in my last post about the state of the demolition. They are still working on the last bits, but they won't get any deeper then this. On top of that the 1st preparations for the actual construction have started, and it will officially start this Saturday (today in Japan, tomorrow for most of the rest of the world). Source in Japanese for the actual construction start. (http://www.nikkei.co.jp/kansai/news/news006977.html). If there will be more sources tomorrow this thread can be moved towards the U/C section. :)

In the article that confirms the start of construction is focused mainly on the height restrictions because of Osaka Airport (not Kansai International Airport in the bay). There is a 16,5 km area around the airport with a 295m height restriction for buildings. Abenobashi Terminal Building Tower is just outside this area, but only since 2007 when the restricted area became smaller. This was also the moment the height of the project was increased to 300m, earlier heights have been 270 and 295m

China on the other hand, is massive and has plenty of room for expansion, yet there are so many huge buildings going up.

Proof that you don't need tall towers to have a dense environment. More density gains come from several mid-size tower clusters than one super-tall. Generally, supertalls have a lot of wasted space in them as well. You need more room for services, elevators, redundant staircases etc.

Over a certain height, you are merely appealing to the egos of architects or of national pride.

Case in point: Dubai

..

Apparently, they do the outer walls first and then the excavation, followed by the underground floors?

Momo1435
August 4th, 2010, 10:32 PM
I think I read somewhere that they will going to use a top down construction method for the 6 basement floors, it's used very often in Japanese projects. Then it will be excavation and building the underground floors at the same time, while above ground they can already start with the actual tower.

It will all be a logistical challenge, the building site is the exact same size as the new building itself. They could use the side-walk at the north side but it will be straight from the truck onto the tower, there won't be any room for storage.

I can't believe I didn't go to Tennoji on my last visit to Osaka to see this. Sorry if this has been asked before but is this on the previous site of the Kintetsu department store?

Great photo updates again Momo :)

Momo1435

This is indeed the site of the Kintetsu Abeno department store, but only the western part of the complex was demolished for this tower.

08/30

http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/6240/kintetsu1008301.jpg

http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/2295/kintetsu1008302.jpg

The first structural steel parts have arrived on the site. It doesn't mean that the tower will start to rise very soon. These beams are part of the top down contruction method for the underground floors. They will go down first and then the soil will dug around them and the floors will be attached to these beams as they dig deeper.

http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/7632/kintetsu1008307.jpg

Excellent! I'm not a construction expert and this may be a silly question but will there be any concrete core like for example Shard London Bridge? I can't see how there could be looking at the design of this tower.

Momo1435
September 23rd, 2010, 07:34 AM
There won't be a core like the Shard, it will be a steel frame with (some of) the beams reinforced with concrete for extra strength.

09/21

More beams are going into the ground, they go in quite deep so they have to be welded together on the spot. I will take some time before it's all finished, I predict that the tower won't go up anytime soon.

1. Will the existing department store be reconstructed because of its incorporation into the new tower?

2. I hope some proposed supertall building in Tokyo surpasses the Abenobashi Building in height after it gets completed. Plans for that supertall have been abandoned now. (I'm not referring to the Sky Tree though)

Momo1435
October 3rd, 2010, 12:12 PM
I haven't really looked into it, but what I see from the renders the part of the existing building that hasn't been demolished will at least be getting a new exterior.

And it's to bad that Tokyo known supertall building project, the Nishi-Shinjuku 3-Chome Redevelopment (338m) has been cancelled because of a railway station. Or better the lack of it's own railway station that was demanded by the planning authorities, but the private railway company that runs a line next to the site didn't want to open a new station. It must be said that it was huge redevelopment with next to the 338m high 3 other towers between 190m and 245m, the demanded station wasn't something completely unreasonable. But it's still a shame that it was cancelled because of something like this.

But Tokyo will have a supertall some day, but just don't expect one to go U/C anytime soon. As long smaller buildings with big open floor spaces on every floor are dominating the new office market there won't be to many developers that want to develop a supertall on a location in Tokyo outside the area that is effected by the height restriction from Haneda Airport.

No, it's still the old bridge that will be replaced with the new one. The old bridge is now being taken down in steps, in January they another section will close down so they can start with the first part of the new bridge. That will be part on the right side of the render.

The orange part is in this areal shot is the part of the current bridge in the picture, the red part is the part that will close down in January. (the new tower is being built in the lower right corner).

http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/6679/201012212039284df.jpg

Then they can start with the 1st part of the new bridge.

The new bridge will be fully completed in April 2013.

There will be a steel frame that will partly be encased by concrete for extra strength.

And even though it's a building not just a tower it won't go as fast as the Sky Tree, but it could go quite fast anyway judging from other Japanese towers.

patrykus

You are saying that you like buildings to rise with the "new york speed" ?

p.s. Sorry about that but stupid questions deserves stupid answers ;) "Why would we want to this building rise fast?" . What question is that?

btw just to stay on topic. This seems to be the most shiny crane I've ever seen, it seems its the crane of the same brand as these used in sky tree, isn't it? After Sky Tree it is second time I see those cranes in use. It looks as they are only used in Japan.

Momo1435

I don't see a name of the crane manufacturer, it could be different then the ones used for the Sky Tree. But you only see Japanese cranes at Japanese construction sites and they don't seem to be exporting them like they do with smaller cranes and diggers etc. Therefor you don't see them anywhere else.

They could have done it the easy way but then this site would still be a deep hole in the ground. A quite complicated deep hole for 6 underground floors in this location right next to the old terminal building and it's not like they are building this tower on bedrock.

didnt the japanese r the first to adopt and pioneered in top down method?

^^ I don't know, but they do use it quite often.

Well they have nice cranes backup here. The tower is just half as high as shanghai tower and it looks like they have similar ability to move things here as they have in st site.

Not the best pictures, but it does show the speed of construction.

The construction site is also tiny compared to the size of the building, there's simply no room around the tower going up to make it look untidy.
