View Full Version : Mahratta's Showcase: Bombay
Mahratta January 9th, 2009, 12:53 AM Xposted from international forums
As my thread on Vasai continues, I've decided to add another set of pictures from my recent India trip - Mumbai, the financial centre of India.
Here are some pictures of South Bombay, one of my favourite places on Earth. It is a mix of the architecture and the street life of the area.
Siddhivinayak Mandir, not in South Bombay (it's in Prabhadevi, between Dadar and Worli, so a fair bit north of South Bombay itself)

Watson's Hotel, located in South Bombay. The oldest surviving cast iron building in India, built in the 1860s. A common tale describes Jamsetji Tata being excluded from the hotel as an Indian, which led him to build the rival Taj Mahal Hotel (profiled later). Although the building is a class II historical structure it is in a decrepit state.

the British influence in South Bombay is particularly strong. Hopefully more buildings around old cities in India (most, like Delhi, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad etc. are far older than Bombay's) start restoring their buildings like this

I love the juxtaposition of old and new, beautiful and decrepit in South Bombay (and all around India, really)

Surely but surely the corporation can take better care of these buildings. Spending billions on cricket and the lot, some on building maintanance will be well appreciated before these buildings are no longer maintenable. It is frustrating that the corporation won't care year after year but then what do those numwits understand about cleanliness with their frikkin 'tambaku' and all... and look at those hoardings... Sad, very very sad...
Cov Boy January 14th, 2009, 10:51 AM Thats what I thought.
Buildings in the Fort area can be much better maintained for a city that wants to become a world financial city.
The corporation should obviously do far more to beautify the area, get a fund started by private firms or something and start renovating the Fort area.
Mahratta January 14th, 2009, 08:41 PM Indians are a whiny lot
