Persan January 9th, 2009, 05:01 PM Benetton holds competition for Tehran buildings
BD (http://www.bdonline.co.uk/story.asp?sectioncode=426&storycode=3131004&c=1&encCode=00000000018c62ba) | January 09, 2009
Italian fashion label Benetton has launched an international architecture competition for two multi-storey retail and office buildings in Iran’s capital, Tehran. The contest is the latest high-profile link-up between the worlds of fashion and architecture, including Zaha Hadid’s mobile pavilion for Chanel. The pavilion’s tour was recently cancelled owing to the economic downturn.
The winner will be picked by a jury headed by French architect Odile Decq, who has worked in Morocco, Turkey and Algeria. Decq said the project was a chance to create a fresh, intense and relevant design in Iran. But there are fears for the future of the project after activists recently set fire to a branch of Benetton in Tehran following claims in the local press that company founder Luciano Benetton had Zionist links.
Decq, who chaired the competition jury, said she was inspired to take part because of the lack of female architects working in Iran, and insisted that it was a safe, if not an easy, place to work. "[The contest] is interesting because of Tehran, because of the place and its architecture," she said. "Not every country is easy to work in, but we have to go there and prove we can do something in relation to these countries."
London-based architect Cezary Bednarski, founder of Studio Bednarski, expressed interest in entering despite a previous disappointing experience in the country, but he warned practices to protect their work in Iran. "With a client like Benetton, it’s probably reasonably safe, although the worry is how do you get paid and how do you protect your copyright," he said. "If it happens in the western world, you can use your lawyers, but if it happens in Iran, you can forget it."
Benetton's two 12-storey buildings will occupy two separate 1,500sq m sites in the city. Both will have four floors underground, while the ground and first floor levels will be divided into three commercial units. The remaining space will be for offices and flats. The winning entry for each building will be awarded a prize of €20,000.
A step in the right direction - Foreign architects designing buildings in Tehran.

alitezar January 10th, 2009, 12:18 AM ^^ Very cool. Thanks :)
Shapoor January 10th, 2009, 12:19 AM Interesting and challeneging, can't wait to see who wins! I just hope no one will ruin it since I've heard a few Benetton shops have been closed in Tehran :ohno:
Shapoor January 16th, 2009, 10:49 PM Benetton Attack May Unsettle Investors
Despite arson attack on Italian clothes shop, most young Iranians want to buy foreign fashionwear, not burn it.
By Arash Hassan-Nia in Tehran (MR No. 5, 16-Jan-09)
The rallies outside foreign embassies in protest at the bombardment of Palestinians in Gaza have now dispersed, and the traffic news broadcasts on Tehran radio have stopped announcing the blockage of streets in the capital caused by crowds of angry students from the Basij movement.
As the demonstrations gradually fade away, the only visible sign that they ever happened is the burnt-out ruins of the Benetton store in Dolat Street in northern Tehran, and three other branches that have closed in other parts of the city.
There has been no official news about the fire. According to eyewitnesses quoted by the Baztab website, police said the reason why these other shops were closed was that “the Italian owners of the Benetton company are Zionists”.
There are fears that these events will prompt some of the companies that have already invested in the clothing retail market, fashion design, and other consumer goods markets or were planning to do so, to withdraw from Iran. It is an attractive market – 70 million people, and demographically the youngest population in the world.
If they go, they could be replaced by non-European firms, particularly from China.
The arson attack and the compulsory closure of the other three Benetton shops will have come as particularly unwelcome news for the British retail chain Debenhams which had recently expressed an interest in setting up in Iran, and has been designing and fitting out a store in the centrally-located Mirdamad Street.
Debenham’s international manager Francis McAuley has said the shops will sell clothes designed by designers such as Jasper Conran and John Richmond, offering Iranians a chance to dress according to the latest global fashions.
Apart from Debenhams – a brand that is well regarded by young Iranians – the Spanish women’s clothing chain Mango has announced plans to open in Tehran and Kish Island simultaneously. The launch was planned for the end of 2008, but has not yet happened. More important than the date is the question of whether the Spanish retailer will downscale its ambitious long-term planning, which envisages ten more branches in major cities like Isfahan, Shiraz and Mashhad within the next five years.
The colourful windows of brand-name clothing shops, many of them international names, suggests that fashion wear remains in high demand among young Iranians, despite the poor state of Iran’s economy and spiralling inflation.
A walk through the Milad and Tandis shopping centres in western and northern Tehran, respectively, reveals that most famous clothing brands are on sale. Even American brands such as Nike and Tommy are there.
Levi jeans at more than 250 US dollars a time and T-shirts priced at over 70 dollars are costly items, especially in a country where the average annual income is under 8,000 dollars, but demand is high among younger customers.
Most of these shops are not official franchises, but as one manager pointed out, they do their best to use only authentic brands.
A salesman in a shopping centre in Vanak, north Tehran, insisted his company was taking steps to formalise its relationship with the well-known American firm that makes the clothes it sells.
“We are not formal representatives yet, and we’re still importing our goods through Dubai. However, the [US] company has told us that if we manage to sell a million dollars’ worth of their clothes, they will give us the franchise next year,” he said.
Although many store owners regard themselves as main dealers for these brand-names, the price tags on the items on sale – in Turkish lira and United Arab Emirates dirhams – reveal that these neighbouring countries are the primary source for wholesale purchases, and suggest that some clothing is smuggled into Iran.
A senior official in the ministry of commerce says only a couple of famous brand-name firms have taken steps to obtain an official license to operate in Iran.
Formal importers and official company branches account for only a tiny proportion of the huge market for foreign brands. The rest is in the hands of informal importers and illegal smugglers.
Commerce ministry figures indicated that in the past nine months, clothing worth around 11 million dollars entered Iran through legal channels. That is far less than the value of such goods now on sale in Iran.
Given the premium price tag attached to genuine brand-names, there is also a flourishing market in fakes, some of them manufactured inside Iran with the “right” label attached.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has urged Iranian manufacturers to build up their own reputation to displace foreign-made clothing on the domestic market and start exporting abroad.
“In future years, we must work towards making foreign-brand clothing redundant in the Iranian market, and take Iranian clothing to the forefront of the global market,” he said at the recent inauguration of a major clothing manufacture in Ardabil, in northwestern Iran.
That is likely to be an uphill struggle, given the popularity of Chinese-, Turkish-, and Korean-made clothing, not to mention the likes of Mavi, Giordano, Buccini, Hang Ten, Puma, Adidas, Zara, Tommy and other western brands, which suggests Iranian are picky about what they buy and are prepared to pay for it.

mmarco March 1st, 2009, 01:11 AM Hello..
Im looking for someone who could help us out with some questions and details about a design competition we are doing in Teheran. ANybody out there who lives in Teheran and or has knowledge of the city?
thankyou
Shapoor March 1st, 2009, 01:25 AM If you could be a little more specific what the contest is about maybe I could help :)
mmarco March 1st, 2009, 01:29 AM 1st, thanks for answering...
The competition is posted on this website:
http://www.benettongroup.com/designinginteheran/home.html
There are 2 problems.. one we are in mexico and mexicans so we have questions about islamic architecture and customs/culture... also.. in the files provided for the competition, the specific photos of the two sites, are terrible.. 150 x 150 pixles and very blurry for some strange reason...
Shapoor March 1st, 2009, 02:03 AM Ok, Tehran's architecture is very different with the typical Islamic architecture you see in the Middle Eeast. Old buildings in Tehran are mostly from the Qajar and Pahlavi era. Tehran, unlike other main cities in Iran is rather modern.
Some notable and inspirational historic buildings are:
Golestan Palace

Example of Qajar architecture influence on modern buildings:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/0e/Tehran-arjantin.jpg
The streets (valiasr (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valiasr_Street) and tajrish) that the buidings are going to be are very busy with traffic jams, they are covered with giant tall trees and they have wide water canals next to the pedestrians walks. The buildings are mostly shops, offices and resturants.

Feel free to ask any more questions if you want :)
mmarco March 1st, 2009, 02:22 AM WOW, thanks for all this information...
Yes we still have several doughts.. and I dont we dont want to bug you too much, but do you have more information of these canals, next to the sidewalk? because thats something we dont understand from the autocad plans facilitated for the competition...
Do you know what that existing building is ?or has? is this the high clas$ area od teheran?
thanks again for being so nice to us
Shapoor March 1st, 2009, 02:40 AM Since Tehran is a city next to the Alborz mountains and located on a steep place, water canals are made to let the water flow downwards to the south:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3137/2935977668_1fa91e6d5a_b.jpg
The wideness of the walksides vary as you can see. Valiasr street the longest street in the middle east. The northern part of the street may be considered a high class area but many middle class people can also be found because it is one of Tehran's main streets.
If you mean the building in the construction site, it is porbably an old 2 storey house with a few small shops in the ground floor.
noonghandi March 1st, 2009, 10:34 AM Tajrish is the gateway to the mountains. As a matter of fact, you'd be walking up the mountains when you walk through the northern side streets and allies. Tajrish square itself is a flat area.
It is mostly upper class, so is the Vanak square. By the way Vanak square is a few km. south of Tajrish.
mmarco March 2nd, 2009, 01:19 AM Shapoor, from the pcitures and plans facilitated by benetton it is not clear if there is a canal at these two sites and if there is one if it is on the side of the plot of land to be build on.. Im ashamed to ask, but I have to.. is there any way to get picturer sof these two specific sites?
noonghandi March 2nd, 2009, 02:07 AM these water canals run through the length of Valiasr St. and they are on the street side, meaning they separate the street from the side walk. And, these canals are on both sides of the street.
This picture is a good example.

Do not get intimated by the canals, they are just there as noonghnadi said between the sidewalk and street.

thank you for help
shugs March 3rd, 2009, 04:45 PM Does anybody know roughly where in Tehran the store will be?
shugs March 3rd, 2009, 04:50 PM WOW, thanks for all this information...
Yes we still have several doughts.. and I dont we dont want to bug you too much, but do you have more information of these canals, next to the sidewalk? because thats something we dont understand from the autocad plans facilitated for the competition...
The canals are basically an open storm drain system (similar to Paris) to carry rain and melted snow from the mountains down through Tehran and out to the Desert or process plant... They actually are everywhere in Iran, however the ones running down Vali Asr street are among the widest you can find and in my opinion are beautiful with the tall trees growing out of them. Usually they are about 30-40cm wide and 60cm deep (maybe slightly more), some have curbs to stop cars driving into them particularly in busy areas and some do not.
Shapoor March 3rd, 2009, 08:03 PM Does anybody know roughly where in Tehran the store will be?
Locations:
a multistorey building A located in Teheran, at No. 1742, corner of Salmak St., Vali Asr Ave., Tajrish Sq., in about 1500 m² lot,
a multistorey building B located in Teheran, at Vali Asr Ave., 800 metres to the south of Vanak Square, in about 1500 m² lot

DOES ANYONE HAVE A MAP OF TEHERAN IN .DWG FORMAT??? I'VE TRIED TO FIND IT IN THE NET BUT THERE IS NOTHING.
THANKYOU!!!
design44arch March 12th, 2009, 04:10 AM You have to do it by yourself like all of us for the contest ;)
design44arch March 12th, 2009, 05:02 PM And I have very important question.. is there near area B this canals of water??? because I see a large piles of trees
Persiancat March 12th, 2009, 05:54 PM And I have very important question.. is there near area B this canals of water??? because I see a large piles of trees
^^Basically, there are always canals of water near any side walk. It's one thing that makes this city special:)
chauhan March 14th, 2009, 11:36 AM hello u all,
i would like to ask an important question about contest, what are the yearly directions of wind in the city, and is there any influence of mountains on the wind directions, i mean about micro-climate.
thnx & regards...
Shapoor March 14th, 2009, 12:01 PM Wind travels from north west of the city to south east. There is no microclimate because Tehran is on the southern side of Alborz mountains. Tehran's air is dry. The winters are cold & snowy (2-10C below zero) and the summers are hot (35C). The raining days are short, mostly showers with mild storms.
chauhan March 14th, 2009, 08:45 PM thnx a lot,
i would like to ask another question, is their any minimum setback applicable in bye laws for these buildings, or building could be start right from the plot line according to our individual design...
design44arch March 14th, 2009, 10:29 PM I thought about it too because area is 1500 m2 and ground froor is 1200 m2 so maybe we can start from the line but I don't know the Iran law...
design44arch March 29th, 2009, 02:29 AM the registration is over, winners will be announced on 20 April
alitezar March 29th, 2009, 02:55 AM ^^ very cool. Best of luck to you :)
pawel_kosmicki April 21st, 2009, 12:52 AM Does anybody know the results? 20th april is just gone, and there's nothing on the competition website...
design44arch April 21st, 2009, 05:05 PM I'm waiting like you...
sarbaze tabarestan April 22nd, 2009, 12:52 AM i doubt they wil be allowed to build it!maybe thy canceled it!
alitezar April 22nd, 2009, 02:36 AM ^^ Why? I don't think so..
sarbaze tabarestan April 22nd, 2009, 02:22 PM benneton was under huge attack from bassijis!i doubt the will allow them a huge presence in tehran, and if the are allowed they must pay much money to bassiji!not to attack them and set their shop in fire!
but anyways i want to see how this shop should look like---then we can copy it and build it for our own iranian shops:-)
design44arch April 22nd, 2009, 08:09 PM First of all there wasn't anything about canceling competition in the terms
Second, all the jury, expecialy Odile Decq are very serious architects and I think that they haven't judged it yet... Benetton should wright something about that on their www
sarbaze tabarestan April 22nd, 2009, 09:57 PM did u take part in this competition?if yes, can u show us ur building?

alexandra_bld April 24th, 2009, 01:09 AM really? i didn't notice it.. I thought of it, but I don't remember anything in text about it..

design44arch April 24th, 2009, 07:44 PM the only thing I can say to you alexandra is to wish you good luck and your friend. Lets just hope we win this competition :)
I forgot to tell you that this is my topic for diploma :D
alexandra_bld April 24th, 2009, 08:20 PM Thank you! I wish you good luck too! I'd like to see your project after we know the results! I thought of it too.. I'm about topic for diploma, but chose another topic.. :) (I did a project of University of Delft (also a competition).. )
h2k April 30th, 2009, 03:52 PM I also participated and I’m eager to see the results and what everyone else has done, too bad they've postponed it all the way to June, that's one of the problems with an open competition with no registration fees, you get such a large number of participants. Hopefully the jury won't get overwhelmed and is still able to recognize good work..
Shapoor June 6th, 2009, 06:44 PM Studio Cowi's vision for Tehran
A fine design or a total monstrosity?
The architecture arm of Denmark’s Cowi Group, Studio Cowi’s design for Benetton’s new building in Tehran is certainly eye-catching.
Some people would call it innovative, others might not be so kind. Construction Week even heard it likened to a desk-top magazine holder. Perhaps that’s where the inspiration came from?
The design is contemporary and modern, but also retains some traditional elements, like the central courtyard of an Islamic house. If chosen the structure will become Tehran's first green building.

TEHR_IR June 7th, 2009, 12:19 AM nice but in my opinion it doesnt fit in Tehrans architecture and other buildings XD

sinasina June 8th, 2009, 02:56 PM ^^ Complicated designs i cant understand lol, any overall renders?
gole_hayahou June 8th, 2009, 08:22 PM the renders are in there......!
alitezar June 8th, 2009, 10:26 PM Not that nice, they all loook sooooo ugly.
Thanks Shapoor for gathering the pix though :)
Shapoor June 8th, 2009, 10:34 PM Yeah they lack character in my opinion. I like project A1 and B3 best, but they don't have the wow factor. From the presentations I can't see much of inspiration from Tehran; there are some brief picture collages but nothing special since they didn't explain how they used them as inspiration.
design44arch June 9th, 2009, 08:25 AM ok so here's my project or should I say how it was looking like for the contest:

sinasina June 9th, 2009, 06:37 PM to be honest guyz i prefer ur projects to the chosen ones! :), I don't know on what basis Benetton went ahead with those designs:ohno:
alitezar June 9th, 2009, 07:22 PM ^^ Yes, me too. You guys did a great job specially the first glass building is so beautiful..
alexandra_bld June 9th, 2009, 07:41 PM This's the Singapore’s Stunning Digital Cloud Skyscraper.
"This incredible pixelated skyscraper by Singapore-based Design Act was a finalist in a competition to design a pavilion for the World Expo 2010. Entitled “My Dream, Our Vision”, the project uses permutated cubes to generate a spectacular modular sculpture that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Singapore as an efficient, dynamic, cosmopolitan, and forward-looking nation.
Simultaneously futuristic and traditional, the Singapore spirit 新 (xin, mandarin word for “new”) serves as a key metaphor for Design Act’s entry, which envisions Singapore as a progressive, re-inventive and innovative place.
The pavilion takes the form of an illuminated digital cloud hovering over an ever-changing “green” pasture. It invites you to enter a dark underground space with audio feeds alluding to the background services which serve the city, and catapults you into the bright and white digital cloud, where you are encouraged to post your dreams. Made of 3866 cubes of modular sizes with varying levels of transparency, the pavilion makes excellent use of natural light and is strategically sloped at the base to give visitors full view of the sights on display."

design44arch June 9th, 2009, 08:28 PM Like I said I't look's more like this building for expo 2010 now when I finnish my diploma in September I will show you gladly the project
btw alexandra realy nice project but unfortunetly for us I think the jury were focused on public space's because almost every project have a crack or passadge or something like that in their own design
alexandra_bld June 9th, 2009, 08:38 PM I just posted a little bit more information about the project))
yep.. we haven't got prizes but just not this time))) I'd like to see your project when you finish it!

design44arch October 17th, 2010, 10:33 AM Helo everyone!
It's been a long year for me and my diploma, but now as I promised
I present to you...
equibox in teheran
The main question which I put as a following was...
"Is there a possibility to create an Icon of Benetton Group using a Teheran traditional culture element, transfom it and write it on a language of medernity.
No more words... enjoy!
