Want to know all about Turning Torso?
Want to view the pictures that started this thread?
(I took them.)

I live close to Turning Torso, and I have had a web site
about Turning Torso and its surroundings in swedish
for about a year now. Since I understand that there
is a great interest for Turning Torso even outside Sweden,
I have now translated what I have written about Turning Torso
into english. You can find it all at:

Hope you enjoy it.

Well, in fact I was referring to AtlanticaC5. But now I searched for some buildings bigger than 100m in sweden...but there is none :D

May I ask why there are no skyscrapers over there? Do you have the same restrictions like we do in germany?

not really any restriction but the growth in sweden aint good and like that taxing on building here is just too much :P and we have allot of land so theyattend to spread out in width instead of heigth

Actually there is kista science tower 160m (117m roof), And also alot of 80m+ buildings.

1. A building is a skyscraper when it has at least 99m in height.

2. The Kista Science Tower is also U/C. I thought there is already a building, you could consider a skyscraper (only the roof-height counts and it´s 130m at the kista science tower).

@wolkenkrabber: You sure have a lot of land...but it isn´t in use. Such houses are only built in the cities and for what I know Stockholm is only 188km² big (in comparison to Hamburg for example with 751km² )

P.S. Russia and Turkey are bigger than sweden as well

Swede
December 29th, 2003, 03:32 PM
99m is just another arbitrary cut-off. There is no "true" defenition. And while KST is officially u/c for a couple more months it's long since topped out and only has some interior work left, I was up on the roof months ago and all the exterior work excecpt a parking lot was done then.

about sthlm's size, well we're ~700K in those 188km2 (City of Stockholm, continuous Urban area is larger) but the metro spreads out pretty far giving it a lower density then the LA metro.

There are several churches and TV towers taller than 100m, but I suppose they are not counted as buildings?

In general, Swedish politicans and citizens don´t like tall buildings in the city centers, especially not in the city centers.

But in Kista Science Tower in Stockholm is taller than 100m. Ask Swede!:D

Two very interesting points:

First the churches: No, they are not counted as skyscrapers.
Second the "we don´t like skyscrapers in the centers: Yes, it´s the same in my hometown hamburg.

In fact our churches are the reason, why we don´t like tall buildings in the city...we have five main churches (the biggest one is 150m tall, the smallest 130m or so). They create their own skyline and we don´t want capitalistic buildings to overtop this. But we have space enough to build skyscrapers on other places though and some nice buildings are already approved.

Maybe the swedish citizen will realize that it´s not that bad to have skyscrapers....The turning torso can be just the beginning;)

btw. our TV-tower is 300m high and it looks great in the skyline of churches:angel1:

I didn´t mean population, the size of these countries area are bigger than Sweden. Sorry, I would also like if Sweden was bigger. But I must admit that I was wrong with Italy, UK and Germany. It seems like Sweden is much larger than I was aware of!

United Kingdom:
244 140 km2

Poland:
312 685 km2

Germany:
357 020.79 km2

Sweden:
449 965 km2

Larger than Sweden
France:
547 030 km2

Spain:
504 842 km2

Ukraine:
603 700 km2

Russia(only partly belonging to Europe):
17 031 900 km2

The first piece of the outer wall will be placed on Turning Torso in January or February this year.

More exciting Turning Torso news:

A film-team from the Discovery Channel will visit Malmö in February, to make a one-hour TV program about Turning Torso.

The program will be sent as a part of the Extreme Engineering series, and it will be broadcast this fall, first in USA, then in the rest of the world.

All the projects in the Extreme Engineerings series have one thing in common: They challenge the common definition of what is technically feasible, and that is true also for Turning Torso.

I took this picture yesterday:

I'll be in Copenhagen the 16th (and again in July). I've already planned visiting Malmo for the TT in July but wondered if I could sneak in a quick update on the 16th. How long does it take from Copenhagen Central to Malmo, and then from Malmo central station to a reasonble location to take update pictures? (and back..)

I arrive at Copenhagen Airport around noon but have a concert there at night, not sure if there's time to go back and forth to TT. If I do, I'll take pics, of course.. otherwise those will come in July!

There is a time table on this page (a PDF document): http://www.dsb.dk/oeresund/kystbane_2003.pdf. "København H" is the central station and "Københavns Lufthavn, Kastrup" is the airport. The train leaves every 20 min. to Malmö. As you can see, it takes 35 min. from København H to Malmö C. I don't know how to get from Malmö C to Turning Torso. Some of our Swedish friends must know that.. :)

A "kolumn" from yesterday's Metro (in Swedish):
http://www.metro.se/site/metro/discuss/?entry_type=kolumn&entry_id=17892

The author critises heavily this project, saying that it was based on unrealistic expectations and that it's just a product of fantasy of big boys wanting to play with big toys. And the worst thing is that she is probably right...

In these times with lowerd expectations about Turning Torso, it might be worth to remember that most building have a hard time in the beginning. Like World Trade Center. Took years before it was fully leased.

Im not to worried about TT. When its all done in a few years, the econemy most likely will look better, and there are still a lot of rich people in the region. People who might not be likely to buy, before they see the finished result, or perhaps the great view..Meybe im wrong, but i think 5 years from now, its gonna be a great success.

From Malmö C to Turning Torso? A 15 minute walk and you´ll be there. Or take the bus from the station, that will probably just take 5 minutes. TT is not so far from the city center.

It is now official all apartments in Turning Torso will be for rent and not for sale. The rent will be 1500 2000 skr/square meter and year. That means around 8000 skr for 40m2.

Today I think there was a very positive article about Turning Torso in Kvällsposten. Most people in Malmö have started to like it. Just like Öresundsbron, many people are sceptic in the beginning, but when it is completed they become proud. :)

@grendy
That would not be so hard to fix.

HSB Turning Torso was yesterday announced as a winner in the category Residental Developments at the prestigious MIPIM Awards in Cannes. MIPIM is the annual international conference and exhibition event for the property industry. MIPIM Awards give recognition to those companies responsible for the most remarkable property developments on the international arena.

I had problems with my USB, but that is fixed now, so here is the photo that I promised:
Photo of Malmö skyline, February 26th 2005.

It is taken from the bus window while the bus was driving fast, that explains the quaility.

Do you think TT is the best skyscraper in Europe? Then vote for it here (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=230624) in the Urban Hall of Fame, it's a tough race between TT and SwissRe in London! :)

Well, being the second best skyscraper in Europe is not very bad. ;)

Both cranes on TT have now been taken down, and what is visible now is the finished structure. Thereby, Turning Torso is totally finished on the outside - and it looks absolutely stunning.

Any new pictures of the TT without the cranes? :D

And how about the inside? When will that be finished?

Sorry for the bad quality, these pics are taken from a car window by a mobile phone (SE K750i), hence the somewhat discussable quality.

I will head out and take pics with my Nikon cam soon. The finished TT without the cranes looks absolutely stunning. I can not believe it actually.

Am I exaggerating when stating that this is one of the best skyscrapers in the world? And we got it right here in Scandinavia.

hmm ... to be honest, you might be, a little bit ;) In terms of design, i dont think it can beat buildings like the Sears Tower or the Empire state building... But its close! I think the TT is defidentally the best designed skyscraper in Europe, and probably within the top 10 of the world.
