Meydan Racecourse

The Meydan Racecourse is an iconic and landmark development spanning 76 million square feet and featuring a state of the art dirt and turf tracks, a world class grandstand with a capacity of approximately 60,000 people.

The Meydan Racecourse will include a five star hotel, more than ten restaurants, several private hospitality suites and boxes, the homes of both the Meydan Museum and Dubai Racing Club, a state of the art racing museum, as well as covered parking for approximately 10,000 cars.

A four kilometre canal which will run from Dubai Creek will offer racegoers a unique opportunity to arrive by boat to the racecourse, and will feature a marina and a boathouse. Hospitality and dining facilities within the new grandstand will redefine the racing experience and offer levels of luxury, comfort and racing entertainment second to none.

Meydan racecourse shaping up for a grandstand finish

It is the sheer size that shocks. The new grandstand being built at Meydan racecourse is gigantic. Big enough to be mistaken for an airport terminal, this huge structure measures Five, yes five, furlongs, end to end; almost 1,000 metres of promised luxury for a crowd, who may only see racing at the track six months of the year.

Race against time: Constructors face tight deadlines in the building of what will be the world's biggest racecourse

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum is famous for his big ideas, but the scale of this latest venture, in a city that continues to develop at incredible speed despite the financial downturn, promises to equal the achievement of building the iconic Burj Al Arab, the sail-shaped, seven star hotel, on the edge of the Arabian Gulf.

Imagine Meydan's grand opening day, scheduled for March next year, with thousands flocking to the track to witness history being made. Sheikh Mohammed, Dubai's ruler, chooses not to deploy a motorcade through heavy traffic. Instead, he takes a boat, via a canal linking Business Bay, near the Emirates Towers on busy Sheikh Zayed Rd, to the racecourse.

The canal, currently under construction, is to flow into a lake at Meydan, where Sheikh Mohammed and his entourage will disembark at the racecourse's boathouse. The Queen's motorcade, through the golden gates and up the home straight each day at Royal Ascot, is always special, but in racing terms, the Maktoum arrival promises to be unique if he takes up the boating option.

The racecourse and grandstand, measuring 76 million square feet, is said to be costing US$1.25 billion, and that estimate is conservative. But the overriding concern of all who have visited the recently is whether the project can possibly be completed by Dubai World Cup night next year, never mind the earlier deadline for 'normal' racing prior to the big occasion. It is a huge gamble – and it is almost certain to be a photo finish.

This week, I saw the frame of the gigantic grandstand, towering over the two smaller structures currently in use at Nad Al Sheba. The intriguing feature of this project is that the new racecourse will be laid over the site of the existing Nad Al Sheba in a complete overlap. They can't start putting down 60 per cent of the new track surfaces, until the last race has been run at Nad Al Sheba on March 28. Demolition is to commence soon after.

"There just couldn't be a case made for the two racecourses to co-exist, side by side, even in the short term," one source pointed out. "The grass track at Nad Al Sheba isn't wide enough, and the dirt needs changing. The kickback on the dirt is pretty severe, so it would have needed to be replaced, in any case.

"As for the old grandstands, they were too small for the World Cup crowds and badly required upgrading. Meydan is much needed," he added.

But, just as in Britain, the rest of Europe, America and Asia, most newspapers are leading their front pages with tales of financial doom and gloom. Dubai is no different, and there were growing concerns last month when reports circulated of the Meydan Group (responsible for developing the racecourse) sacking Arabtec Construction and Malaysia's WCT, partners in a joint-venture to build the track.

Tellingly, perhaps, the official reason published was the cancellation was "for non-adherence to the agreed time schedule for construction." Even with 15 months remaining, somebody at senior level in the Meydan Group took the decision that time was running out. Meydan Group are now expected to take on the subcontractors themselves.

The man with overall responsibility for delivering the project to Sheikh Mohammed, on budget, but more importantly, on time, is Saeed Humaid Al Tayer, a former powerboat world champion, who is chairman of Meydan and the Dubai Racing Club, as well as vice-chairman of the Emirates Racing Authority.

American Frank Gabriel is his chief executive, charged with the task of driving the project to completion. Gabriel, a respected racing figure internationally, is adamant that the new racecourse is on schedule. "We're good at the moment," he told me. "We're keeping up with the timelines. It's a racetrack, and it is about racing, so we're about to complete a new [nine-furlong] artificial [Tapeta] training track, which will also have a turf track alongside. We also still plan to have a racing carnival next winter, starting at the usual time."

On a previous visit last year, I wrote of 'a new racecourse rising with astonishing speed from the sand,' now I am obliged to add further that its size is bordering on the incredible. It makes Ascot's new structure seem on the small side. Meydan is not just a racecourse, it is a small town.

With the needle-like Burj Dubai, in the background, aiming to be the world's tallest building (though it will be a close-run contest, by all accounts), Meydan has no opposition when it comes to deciding the world's biggest racetrack. The only question remaining is: will it be ready in time?

WCT, Arabtec seek $460 mln for Dubai contract

Thu Feb 26, 2009 1:41pm GMT

By Jason Benham

DUBAI, Feb 26 (Reuters) - Malaysian engineering firm WCT Bhd (WCTE.KL) said on Thursday it, along with Dubai's Arabtec Holding ARTC.DU, was seeking at least $460 million in compensation for a Dubai race course contract that was cancelled last month.

WCT and Arabtec were initiating a civil suit and arbitration proceedings against Dubai's Meydan LLC over an alleged "breach of contract" for cancelling the deal to build a racecourse in Dubai, WCT said in a statement on the Malaysian bourse website.

Meydan officials could not be reached for comment.

"In its request for arbitration, the joint venture has submitted a summary of the dispute along with the description of the claims totalling approximately 1.69 billion dirhams ($460.1 million) plus other sums," WCT said in the regulatory filing.

Meydan said on Jan. 5 it had cancelled the deal to build a racecourse -- which included a plan for a 1 kilometre (0.6 mile) grandstand -- "because of non-adherence to the agreed time schedule for construction".

"We've started arbitration proceedings," Arabtec Holding Chief Executive Riad Kamal told Reuters by telephone, declining to specify how much compensation Arabtec was seeking. "It's something we are still working on."

WCT shares have tumbled more than 40 percent since the deal was cancelled. Arabtec shares also fell sharply in January, but have recovered this month after the largest United Arab Emirates construction company posted a sharp rise in 2008 profit.

WCT and Arabtec had said in 2008 a 50-50 joint venture had won a $1.3 billion contract to build the racecourse in Dubai. Continued... (http://uk.reuters.com/article/rbssIndustryMaterialsUtilitiesNews/idUKLQ56677220090226?pageNumber=2&virtualBrandChannel=0)

Meydan to open Jan 28 but construction ongoing

by Andy Sambidge on Wednesday, 21 October 2009

Meydan, the new Dubai racecourse, will have a soft opening on January 28 and all construction work will be finished by World Cup night on March 27, a senior official has confirmed.

Dubai Racing Club chief executive Frank Gabriel said construction work would still be ongoing in some areas when the new mega project opens for the first race in January.

"We will have open on the first night what we need to have open," said Gabriel in comments published by the UK's Racing Post.

"There will be areas of the grandstands that are not required on January 28, but then we have two months to make sure that all the facilities are in place for Saturday March 27," he told the specialist racing magazine.

He said work continued around the clock on the kilometre-long facility, adding: "There will be no specific handover date, because we're working closer with the master planners all the time, but I can assure people who are thinking of booking for the World Cup that we will be ready."

In light of the construction programme, the carnival will take in nine race nights, one fewer than in previous years, Gabriel added.

With the Nad Al Sheba racecourse now part of the construction site, the 2009-10 UAE season, which starts on Friday November 6, is being shared among Abu Dhabi, Jebel Ali and the newly reopened Sharjah track, the magazine reported.

The grandstand and racecourse are just the first of four areas to be developed under the Meydan banner.

Meydan racecourse ready for 2010 season

by Matt Warnock on Dec 16, 2009

The first phase of Dubai's ambitious horseracing village, Meydan, has been completed and the brand new grandstand and racecourse will welcome their first visitors on January 28, when the Dubai Racing Festival kicks off.

“We are extremely pleased to reveal the grandstand which is the world’s largest and longest ‘landscraper’ with a span of 1.6kms,” said communications director Mohammad Abdul Nasser Al Khayat.

“The grandstand has seating for 20,000 and a capacity for 60,000 spectators on race days. In total, our expected attendance during the 2010 season is 300,000.”

The grandstand consists of several interlocked elements with the new The Meydan hotel accounting for 33% of the development; 95% of the hotel’s rooms look out directly on to the course.

The central section of the grandstand – the main seating areas, corporate suites and the architecturally magnificent ‘bubble bar’ – are all covered by a 426m x 56m roof.

“On the upper side of the roof there are 8000 solar panels which generate 750kw contributing to Meydan being a truly green development,” said marketing and communications manager William Oburu.

“The underside is titanium, while 9000 tonnes of steel were used in its creation.”

At the opposite end from the hotel, the grandstand runs into a marina which connects directly to Dubai Creek

“A lot of work has gone into the racecourse as well,” said Dubai Racing Club CEO Frank Gabriel Jr.

“Meydan now has a 2400m turf track and 1750 all-weather track created by specialists Tapeta Footings. The drainage is superb, it provides a great cushion for the horses with several layers and is topped by a layer of fibre, rubber, sand and wax.

“What’s extremely exciting is that the Dubai World Cup and Sheema Classic can now start and end right in front of the grandstand.”

Meydan chairman Saeed Al-Tayer confirmed that the cost for the grandstand alone had been around AED4.6bn while the whole facility – including the giant Falcon car park – had a cost closer to AED10bn.

The grandstand and racecourse at Meydan represent just one of four districts within the development and Al-Tayer claimed that ground had been broken elsewhere with infrastructure being put in place.

Two weeks today all eyes will be firmly focused on what will surely become the horse racing capital of the world; Meydan opens its doors to the public and while many people have been quick to crab the progress of the development, I have little doubt everything will be in place when and where it matters.

For the past three weeks or so jockeys and trainers have been testing their charges on the new surface and despite reservations from some quarters, the tapeta has been given a thumbs-up.

It will be interesting to see how it rides once horses are galloping at speed bearing in mind the training track has been in full use since March and is well and truly broken in, whereas the track at Meydan has had very little exposure to the pounding of hooves and may feel slightly different underfoot.

Meydan masters

Over the past few days members of the media department at Dubai Racing Club have been busy filling in the world on what the course has to offer. There was confirmation that there will be a Shergar Cup-style jockeys challenge the day after Super Thursday, as first reported in XPRESS back on December 17.

Meydan Masters will feature jockeys who have ridden winners in 11 of the world's most prestigious races. Dubai Racing Club will invite a 12th rider closer to the time. I did notice that Frankie Dettori wasn't on the original list, so maybe his name will be included to ensure it will be a Who's Who among horse racing's weighing room personalities.

Calvin Borel (dubbed Bo-rail) features in the line-up and following his scraping the paint tactics on Mine That Bird in the Kentucky Derby, Meydan's tight all-weather will suit his style perfectly.

Various trainers have issued further details about animals they expect to send out to Dubai. However, I find it a little strange that we have to rely on the Racing Post, compiled, some 3,000 miles away in London, to keep us informed of local developments!

I'm really excited that Crowded House is one thoroughbred due to board a flight to sunnier climes. Trained by Brian Meehan, who is due to saddle a handful of runners throughout the Carnival, Crowded House won the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy in 2008 and was last seen finishing closest of the English-trained runners when fifth to Sea The Stars in the Epsom Derby.

With a fair amount of class and freshness on his side, the World Cup was mentioned as being a possible target, and, hailing from a yard that turned out David Junior to win the Duty Free a few years ago, the Paul Reddam-owned four year old looks a name to look out for.

Happy retirement

I visited the racehorse retirement home in Hatta on Monday and a big thank you to Brenda Cooke and everyone involved in allowing us to have a look around. For anybody concerned that horses are not looked after once their career on the track comes to end can stop worrying now, if the horse version of the Burj Al Arab is anything to go by.

Meydan opens doors with Carnival

Historic facility in Dubai will play host to the world's richest race — the Dubai World Cup — on March 27

* By Robin Chatterjee, Deputy Managing Editor
* Published: 00:00 January 28, 2010

Dubai: The Dh10-billion historic Meydan grandstand and racecourse — home to the world's richest horse race — is set to open on Thursday night with the first race meeting of the Dubai International Racing Carnival.

Speaking to Gulf News, Saeed Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and CEO, Meydan, said: "The facilities have been ready for sometime. We have done the trials and are happy with them. The future of racing will be cemented with the introduction of Meydan. This project is a landmark not just for racing but for the country and Dubai."

Positive assessment

Today's meeting will culminate in the staging of the Dubai World Cup on March 27, with prize money of $10 million (Dh36.7 million) on offer for the feature race. By March, all components related to the project, which include the Grand Stand and the Meydan hotel, should be completed.

"Within the next few weeks you will see how this project is moving," said Al Tayer, assuring that the blueprint for a return on investment was firmly in place. "We have hired specialists who have viewed this enterprise both as a model and as a clinic. The assessments that they have come up with are positive."

The Meydan grandstand is the world's largest at 1.6 kilometres, or the equivalent of 22 Boeing 747s.

Watch the racing from the hotel balcony, the pool or on the biggest TV screen in the world... inside the new £1.25bn racetrack

By Sportsmail Reporter (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/search.html?s=y&authornamef=Sportsmail+Reporter) Last updated at 7:53 PM on 27th January 2010

In a city of superlatives, anything less than lavish would never have done. But then, when Dubai first dreamed up its astonishing £1.25billion ($2 billion) racetrack to host the world's richest race three years ago, the emirate was revelling in the success of a property boom with new skyscrapers appearing on the horizon at the rate of knots.

Meydan racecourse was part of the grand scheme of Dubai's ruler, Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, to make the world take note as he ordered construction of the biggest, fastest, tallest.

http://i45.tinypic.com/33k9ldk.jpg
Splashing out: The rooftop swimming pool at the Meydan racetrack in Dubai

That dream has come crashing around his ears as Dubai has been battling for the past year with a debt crisis caused by plummeting property prices. Its neighbouring emirate, the oil-rich and infinitely more affluent Abu Dhabi, came to its rescue with a £6.2billion ($10 bn) loan when Dubai begged its creditors for a six-month reprieve from its debt repayments, causing shockwaves around the global stock market just before Christmas.

Amid tales of thousands of cars being abandoned at the airport with keys still in the ignition last year, then, tonight's inaugural meeting will be a considerably more sombre affair for the city once known for blowing $20m at a hotel launch party, even as it careered toward recession.

Yesterday the bulldozers were still rife, the glitzy marina where racegoers will be able to watch from their top decks, champagne glasses in hand, is as much a mirage as those seen in the sand dunes nearby and labourers were frantically putting the final touches to the 60,000-capacity venue just hours ahead of welcoming the first visitors.

But the whole thing is undeniably spectacular and if it is the last 'world's biggest' Dubai tries to pull off, then it is certainly doing it in style.

A 20,000-seater grandstand running 1.6km long is just one of the breathtaking sights greeting arrivals today. It is topped by a vast crescent-shaped roof the size of 27 tennis courts, whose 15,000 square metre span has nearly 5,000 solar panels to supply a fifth of the building's power supply.

At one end of the stand is a five-star hotel with 290 rooms, the first in the world to be integrated into a grandstand at a racetrack. Nearly all the rooms have balconies overlooking the course and, while the venue was still covered in rubble yesterday, organisers insisted it would be ready in time for the Dubai World Cup in March.

They have little choice but to be ready with nearly 700 eager racegoers on a waiting list before tickets to the event go on sale on Tuesday.

A 1,750-metre all-weather Tapeta track set inside a 2,400m turf course replaces the now-defunct 2,200m dirt track at Nad al Sheba. The move is reflected in ticket prices, which will be a staggering £1,090 per head in the hospitality boxes at Dubai World Cup, up from £838 last year. At the top of the grandstand is the 5,000-capacity Sky Bubble Lounge, with views of the dramatic skyline and the towering Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, which opened last month and now sits as a monolithic monument to Dubai's hubristic ambitions.

Two restaurants offer unobstructed, panoramic views of the course and there is a 107m-long TV screen (the largest in the world - what else?) for anyone worried about missing the action. Even the 6,800-capacity car park is a thing of beauty -from an aerial viewpoint, it fans out in the shape of a falcon, the national emblem.

Meydan's chairman Saeed al Tayer said he expected 30,000 spectators to visit during its opening season, adding: 'We have facilities we never had before and will be bringing racegoers as close to the action as possible.'

Frank Gabriel, chief executive of Dubai Racing Club, said: 'The majority of spectators will be right on top of the action. Those staying in the hotel will find it mind-boggling that they can wake in the morning and have a coffee while watching the horses training, then go directly into the grandstand for a race. That's the wow factor and something that has never been done before.'

Picture perfect: A safety officer takes a photo of the Meydan grandstand

Tonight, as the Dubai International Racing Carnival kicks off, however, there will be no fanfare and no fireworks. Much of the 18 million sq m site, which will eventually be known as Meydan City, is still under construction and a spokeswoman admitted she had 'no idea' when on-site projects like the marina, a horse racing museum and Imax cinema would be started, let alone completed.

Only eight of the venue's 48 hospitality suites have been built (the rest are promised in time for the World Cup) and, with only 1,000 firm ticket sales for tonight's meeting, which cost between £8 and £143 per head, organisers will be praying curiosity will draw the crowds to fill the 2,000 free seats.

Dhruba Selvaratnam, who runs the nearby Jebel Ali racecourse and had a sneak preview last week, said: 'It looks fantastic and is absolutely huge but it will need to be used for at least six months a year to justify its cost and size. Hopefully, it will be used as a concert and conference venue too.'

The venue's spokeswoman said: 'Yes, the economy is going through a downturn and things at the course are happening slower than expected but we are trudging along. It has not stopped us from carrying on.'

In which case, perhaps the falcon-shaped course might yet emerge as a phoenix from the ashes of stricken Dubai.

Project completion hits 97% in Rashidiya Metro Station bridges, 95% in Meydan bridges: Al Tayer

Roads & Transport Authority – Mohammed Al Munji:
H.E. Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), announced that project completion has reached 97 per cent in the bridges at the approaches of the entry/exit points of Rashidiya Metro Station, and 95 per cent of bridges and roads leading to Meydan Racecourse at Nad al-Sheba area.

Bridges leading to Rashidiya Metro Station are currently undergoing final touches by the contracting company in preparation for opening. The project includes construction of directional ramps at the intersection of Emirates Road and Khawaneej Road. It also includes construction of two bridges at Khawaneej Road in order to facilitate vehicular movement from and to the Park and Ride facility of Rashidiya Metro Station with a total length of 2.5 km. Early last year RTA has opened phase one of the project involving a bridge leading to the entry of the Parking lot of the station; which has a capacity to house about 2700 vehicles.

“Construction of the project, which costs about 699 million dirham, comes as part of RTA drive to improve and upgrade the network of main roads in the emirate of Dubai, and link the Park-and-Ride facilities of the metro stations with the roads network within Dubai Emirate. Rashidiya Station is one of the key metro stations as it is the starting point of Dubai Metro Red Line. The station extends 130 meters in length and 30 meters in width and has a capacity to handle 11,000 passengers per hour per direction. The station has two entry points fitted with escalators and lifts to ease the movement of commuters to and from the station, and a multi-level parking lot with a capacity to accommodate 2714 vehicles in order to encourage the public to use the metro in their travels across the emirate. The ground floor of the complex has been designated for public transport modes that feed the station, and has been designed to accommodate articulated and double-deck buses and to ensure smooth traffic flow and accommodate a large number of buses at a time. The building has also been linked with footbridges extending to the opposite side of the road leading to the metro station such that the period needed to travel from the farthest point of a parking slot will not exceed 3 minutes, while addressing all safety aspects of passenger movement within the parking lot.

Al Tayer revealed that construction of Roads & Bridges Project leading to Meydan Racecourse reached an advanced stage and the contractor is about to finalize the project which encompasses construction of bridges extending 2025 meters, including two entry/exit bridges extending 710 meters and a VIP bridge linking Meydan with Dubai-Al Ain Road extending 1315 meters.

Here is an update to some of the building going on in Meydan City.

Dubai strikes again as Meydan City projects go to tender
There appears to be no hint of recent financial difficulties as far as the developers of Meydan City in Dubai are concerned. Having recently opened one of the largest horse racing facilities in the world, complete with trackside hotel and destination marina, the other major elements comprising the business, sporting and lifestyle district have gone to construction tender.

The 200 million sq ft masterplan designed for Meydan Group LLC is based on a green oasis, separated into four distinct areas: the Racecourse with Meydan Hotel; Meydan Horizons; Godolphin Park and Meydan Metropolis. The newly completed racecourse sector is the showpiece of the development covering 67 million sq ft providing much more than equestrian enjoyment. The attached Meydan hotel has 290 rooms, 95% of which overlook the racecourse, the marina nearby provides retail and corporate opportunities, while Meydan Museum and Gallery and an IMAX Theatre add to the cultural offerings.

Nearby the 15 million sq ft Horizons development is set to provide a new business and residential centre as a phased development. Containing its own marina, the development is also inter-weaved with bicycle paths, canals and pedestrian promenades, attempting to decrease negative environmental effects and provide a pleasant cosmopolitan atmosphere. The key structures of Horizons are the sail shaped Meydan Gateway Towers and the Horseshoe Plaza.

Metropolis is designed to be home to the world's most powerful companies. Inspired in its design by earth and metal and their 'associated values of strength energy and determination', Meydan hope Metropolis will be 'the undisputed choice for companies who really mean business.'

"This prestigious address will offer business towers equipped with spacious lobbies, lush gardens, void roof tops and lobbies that offer views as distinct as its residents. State-ofthe- art high-speed elevators keep up with the pace of modern business today, perfect for executives on the move," say Meydan.

The final and perhaps most controversial of the sectors is Godolphin Parks with its 40 storey Godolphin tower featuring a thoroughbred horse image cut through its façade. The corporate usage of the tower will be balanced by an enormous retail element in the Signature Mall, a linear 1.4 km structure with views out the the river.

Malaysian architect Teo A. Khing (TAK) is responsible for designing and consulting many of the main building projects in the development.

What would an announcement with some eye candy?

Meydan trackside hotel to 'soft launch' on March 4

by Ed Attwood on Monday, 22 February 2010

ALMOST OPEN: The Meydan Hotel features 285 rooms and suites, 95 percent of which have a clear view of the racetrack.

Dubai developer Meydan has announced that the world’s first trackside hotel will soft launch on March 4, timed to coincide with the Dubai International Racing Carnival’s ‘Super Thursday’ meet.

Featuring 285 rooms and suites, the Meydan Hotel also incorporates seven restaurants and bars, plus a roof-top pool with a swim-up bar.

Around 95 percent of the rooms have a clear view of the racetrack.

“We are pleased to welcome our first guests here at The Meydan Hotel on March 4 as it not only coincides with the Dubai International Racing Carnival’s Super Thursday races and Sting’s concert, but also marks a pivotal moment as we launch our first hospitality brand offering to the world,” said Abdin Nasralla, Meydan’s vice president of hospitality and Hotels.

“Raising the bar for service, style and excellence, I am very proud to say that there is no other place in the world which can offer such a unique and incomparable experience, whether enjoying the races, or as a tourist or business traveler to Dubai.”

Earlier this month, Meydan chairman Saeed Humaid Al Tayer told Arabian Business that the on-time delivery of the $2.7bn racecourse was a reminder to the world that Dubai could still deliver on its promises.

The list is the first global ranking of its kind and includes venues from 13 different countries

Dubai: The Meydan Grandstand and racecourse facility, which hosted the inaugural Dubai World Cup in March, has been voted the second most important sports venue globally by Sports Pro, an internationally recognised sports magazine.

Almost unanimously seen as a ‘game-changing’ venue not only for the Middle East but for the sport of horse racing across the world, Meydan also rated highly in terms of innovation, originality, infrastructure, potential commercial prowess and the sheer magnitude of the integrated facility.

Published in the June edition of SportsPro magazine, the list is the first global ranking of its kind and includes venues from 13 different countries including North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

The list of venues was compiled by the SportsPro editorial team, before the rankings were determined through consultation with a number of sports industry experts which included designers, architects, stadium managers and sponsorship experts.

Jumeirah Group, the hotel management company owned by Dubai’s government, will manage Meydan’s five-star hotel at the emirate’s horse racing complex.

The hotel has 285 room and suites, conference facilities, business centre and restaurants, Meydan said in a media statement.

Meydan on Tuesday announced the signing of a Letter of Understanding (LOU) with Jumeirah Group for the management of its flagship five-star trackside hotel, The Meydan. Jumeirah was appointed as a service provider to assist in the opening and launch of The Meydan, which welcomed its first guests earlier this year.

Since then, the hotel has seen the official opening of the Meydan Grandstand and Racecourse and hosted guests of the 15th Dubai World Cup on March 27, 2010, the statement said.

It has also opened several F&B establishments including Farriers, the all-day dining restaurant, Prime, its exclusive steakhouse overlooking the racecourse as well as a new luxury Japanese dining experience, Shiba, along with a new fitness centre and spa.

Saeed Humaid Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Meydan, said, "Jumeirah Group are well-known to us, having managed our successful desert resort and spa, Bab Al Shams. They are an internationally recognised and award-winning hospitality group whose service quality and standards very much meet the exacting standards we have set for all of our Meydan branded products. We are indeed glad to chart a new journey with them for The Meydan, and we have exciting plans ahead both for the property and the brand's expansion."

The agreement will cover the management of the five-star hotel property, which include 285 luxury guest rooms and suites, conference facilities and a business centre, restaurants and bars, a spa, fitness centre and other leisure facilities.

Gerald Lawless, Executive Chairman of Jumeirah Group, said, "We are delighted to move ahead in our relationship with Meydan, and following the successful run of our initial appointment for The Meydan's launch, we now look forward to building local and international awareness for the property amongst discerning global travellers. The Meydan has many fantastic features; proximity to the heart of Dubai, quality of service and rooms, and of course its iconic location at the Meydan Racecourse. It is prestigious for us to be associated with Meydan and what is widely considered Dubai's latest landmark. We look forward to building upon the excellent reputation that is fast becoming synonymous with the Meydan brand."

A maximum of 10 per cent of the 1,280 projects announced in 2008 in Dubai will be delivered till 2020, believes a top real estate developer.

"I believe there will be a 90 per cent reduction from the original planned supply into the market by 2020, which is a positive thing for real estate prices," Sheikh Maktoum bin Hasher Al Maktoum, President, Al Fajer Properties told delegates at the first Menares conference.

Sheikh Maktoum said prices were "bouncing near bottom", but the realty market was witnessing a strong uptake. Rental yields, according to him, were currently hovering between 8 and 10 per cent.

Integrated equine development to be modelled on Meydan

By Staff | Published Wednesday, November 10, 2010

A new joint venture company between International Equine Group (IEG), formed between Dubai’s Meydan and Malaysia-based Teo A Khing Design Consultants (TAK), and Tianjin State Farms Agribusiness Group Company, an entity owned by the Chinese government, was officially launched on Wednesday.

The new JV called Hua Zhi Jie Horse Industries will be based in Tianjin and spearhead the development and management of the new Tianjin Equine Culture City.

The announcement concluded a two-year due diligence exercise undertaken by both parties with the objective of positioning Hua Zhi Jie as pioneering the development of an integrated equine industry in China.

As a ‘new economy’ company, Hua Zhi Jie will incorporate the promotion of green technology and encourage positive cultural and social developments for the equine industry in the world’s most populous nation.

The potential for growth for this industry in China is enormous if one takes into consideration the direct economic impact that the equine industry has had on the national economies of the US, UK and Australia, with estimates of $39 billion, $8bn and $6bn, respectively.

Hua Zhi Jie will develop the Tianjin Equine Culture City, measuring over 5,000 mu of land (3.33 million sq m), which will feature world-class race tracks, training tracks, stables and other equine facilities.

The Tianjin racing calendar will coincide with the international racing calendar and once official approval is given, a formal announcement will be subsequently made. It is envisioned that an international flat racing event not dissimilar to the scale of the Dubai World Cup may be staged as early as 2012.

Saeed Humaid Al Tayer, Chairman and CEO of Meydan, said: “Meydan’s success since its launch and its continued growth potential makes it an excellent model to replicate in a burgeoning economy such as China’s. It is a significant partnership and we are very bullish about the growth prospects presented there. We hope to lend our expertise and extensive experience in positioning horse racing, so that it not only promotes the sport, but supports its related industries and provides viable economic returns to the people of China. At the same time allowing horse racing to be seen as a prestigious sport, and a symbol for luxury, lifestyle and culture.”

The parties involved in the signing ceremony included Bai Zhisheng from Tianjin State Farms Agribusiness Group Company, Saeed Humaid Al Tayer, Chairman and CEO of Meydan, Teo Ah Khing, Chairman of Teo A Khing Design Consultants.

Zhang Gaoli, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Tianjin Municipal Community, witnessed the ceremony.
