View Full Version : South African Cities Ranked by Population
GregPz January 12th, 2009, 02:51 PM I know this has been discussed somewhere before but came across Stats SA report for 2007 which is the most recent census. Combined Jo'burg and Ekurhleni as in practical terms they are one city.
1. Johannesburg 6 612 000
2. Cape Town 3 497 000
3. Durban 3 468 000
4. Pretoria 2 346 000
5. Port Elizabeth 1 050 930
6. Bloemfontein 753 000
7. East London 724 000
8. Vanderbijlpark 651 000
9. Pietermaritzburg 617 000
10. Polokwane 562 000
Lydon January 12th, 2009, 03:27 PM I didn't know Vanderbijlpark is so big lol. Erm, where is it exactly?
lukus January 12th, 2009, 06:14 PM I always cape town was bigger than durbs?
lukus January 12th, 2009, 06:14 PM I always thought durbs was bigger than cape town
dysan1 January 12th, 2009, 07:53 PM ^^ they have been about the same size for years, but it does alter on what u finally term CT and Durbs. This is based solely on municipal boundaries, not all the sprawl areas that could in theory be included
EduardSA January 12th, 2009, 11:08 PM There has also been a larger migration from KwaZulu-Natal's rural areas to Durban, than the rural migration (usually from Transkei) to Cape Town.
GregPz January 13th, 2009, 08:34 AM ^^ Well not at the moment. Apparently CT currently has the fastest grwoing population.
dysan1 January 13th, 2009, 08:43 AM ^^ based primarily on the mass migration from the Eastern Cape. The Black african population of the Cape is skyrocketing on the back of these people moving in. It is also the reason behind the massively expanding shacklands along the false bay coast.
Durbsboi January 13th, 2009, 09:37 AM I didn't know Vanderbijlpark is so big lol. Erm, where is it exactly?
outside Vereeniging, near the Vaal River, been there many of a time :ohno:
Lydon January 13th, 2009, 11:00 AM outside Vereeniging, near the Vaal River, been there many of a time :ohno:
Hehe, thanks. I haven't been to Gauteng in ages. I haven't had a reason to. But now I do.
ikops January 13th, 2009, 11:25 AM Vereeniging? As in association/corporation/organisation? :weird:
Vanderbijlpark: Sounds Flemish.
How do cities like George, Kimberley, Nelspruit, Oudtshoorn, Worcester, Stellenbosch, Upington, Rustenburg, Ermelo, Phalaborwa, Lichtenburg, Mosselbaai, Robertson, Wellington/Paarl and Pietersburg score? Are they in the top-20 (30)?
These are the cities I know. :) Not bad, eh (for a non-SA-citizen)?
rulani January 13th, 2009, 12:34 PM Is Jo'burg's population including Sandton and the Surbubs around?
SharksBoy January 13th, 2009, 01:06 PM yes rulani
GregPz January 13th, 2009, 01:07 PM ^^ Yes, all populations are for the greater city areas.
dysan1 January 13th, 2009, 01:13 PM City with strong population growth over the past few years from our research are Richard's Bay, George, Pietermaritzburg and Polokwane
myirakazi January 13th, 2009, 02:08 PM apparently Pietermaritsburg is the fastest growing city n SA
maybe one day we'll have a huge megatropolis:nuts:, just like JHB/Tswane
Durbsboi January 13th, 2009, 02:15 PM Vereeniging? As in association/corporation/organisation? :weird:
come again?
its a town outside Joburg,

romanSA January 13th, 2009, 02:30 PM
I'll quote you on your laughter when it comes true in 30-40 years. :)
myirakazi January 13th, 2009, 02:30 PM positive thoughts guys...
you never know:)
willayster January 13th, 2009, 02:41 PM ^^ what is driving the growth i Pzb? excuse my ignorance, but it does not have much to offer, esp in terms of industry, resources or infrastructure...
grjplanes January 13th, 2009, 02:48 PM I can only speak for the few places close-by, and by the looks of it and previous stats.
George should be between 200 000 and 250 000
MosselBay has probably just gone over 100 000
Knysna probably around 80 000
Oudtshoorn probably around 70 000, not growing as fast as the others.
2 Reasons for growth here, migration from north by richer families, parents choosing to commute to JNB for work on weekly basis. Those that choose not to emigrate, rather moving to smaller safer place with all amenities.
Also migration from Eastern Cape, as interim base for many on their way to Cape Town.
Lydon January 13th, 2009, 02:57 PM Does anyone have some info on developments in Mossel Bay? I drove past it last month and in the distance saw what appeared to be a few sexy talls on the beachfront.
Fedes9000 January 14th, 2009, 04:04 AM Does the ranking just refers strictly to cities or does it include metro areas?
Gulivar January 14th, 2009, 04:10 AM It includes metro areas.
Fedes9000 January 14th, 2009, 04:11 AM ^^Ok, thanks!!!
Caisson Boy January 14th, 2009, 08:41 AM Where is poor old Kimberley in all this? And what about Mafikeng?
dysan1 January 14th, 2009, 08:55 AM apparently Pietermaritsburg is the fastest growing city n SA
maybe one day we'll have a huge megatropolis:nuts:, just like JHB/Tswane
Pmb will be gaining Metropolitan status in the next 4 years, therefore putting it in the same league as Durban, CT and co.
Its main growth is based around industry/manufacturing and government related departments, with the city being the capital of KZN.
It is moving into new "clean" industries too, which are also contributing to its growth economically.
Its population growth is based on rural people moving into the city region and return of capital status leading to people moving to the city for government departments from Ulundi and Durban
Durbsboi January 14th, 2009, 09:07 AM I'll quote you on your laughter when it comes true in 30-40 years. :)
I'll be waiting for that ;)
willayster January 15th, 2009, 02:36 PM outside boemfontein, towards taba n'chu is a huge township +- 1 000 000 folks livin there - excuse the spelling - "botchobelo"???. more ppl live there than in Bfn.
willayster January 15th, 2009, 02:38 PM dont know about pzb - umthatha is the capital of EC, but more than govt spending is required to bring these old towns to city status...
myirakazi January 16th, 2009, 08:05 AM other than the really crappy ROADS....
umthatha is getting some interesting development and i am not sure who is pushing it,
puplic/private??
GregPz January 16th, 2009, 08:19 AM Even as a metro Pietermaritzburg's pop will only be around 850 000. Seems strange that Bloem isn't becoming a metro if Pmb is.
Lydon January 16th, 2009, 09:53 AM I really thought Bloem was much bigger.
dysan1 January 16th, 2009, 03:55 PM Even as a metro Pietermaritzburg's pop will only be around 850 000. Seems strange that Bloem isn't becoming a metro if Pmb is.
bloem is also. so is polokwane and its extended region
GregPz January 16th, 2009, 05:08 PM Thanks. Didn't realise that. In that case East London must be feeling a bit left out.
ZATUGA January 20th, 2009, 08:13 PM Here is the census of 09-10-2006 in terms of urban population. There are many suprises such as Johannesburg only 3rd place, which demonstrates that the CBD at that time was quite deserted. Other great suprise for me was the position of Nelspruit 36th, Knysna 87th, Polokwane 40th...

ZATUGA January 20th, 2009, 08:23 PM By the census given by GregPz ( Johannesburg by it self has 3 888 180 ) in 10th place appears Thalamela with 602 819 and in 12th place appears Nelspruit with 509 970.
dysan1 January 20th, 2009, 08:24 PM Thanks. Didn't realise that. In that case East London must be feeling a bit left out.
they are applying, but their application is being let down by 3 things. A falling population, stagnant economy and political bungling in the East Cape region
ZATUGA January 20th, 2009, 09:20 PM Only now I saw that the data I gave here for Urban population is referes to 1996 and not 2006
ZATUGA January 20th, 2009, 10:06 PM By the estimates the fastest growing cities ( metropolitan population ) ( of the 40 biggest cities ) of South Africa are 1.Richards Bay 2.Welkom 3.Pietermaritzburg 4.Botshabelo 5.George 6.Emalahleni 7.Sihlanga 8.CapeTown 9.Bloemfontein 10.Johannesburg. And including all cities of south africa the fastest growing is Dundee, followed by Richards Bay and Piet Retief.
Gulivar January 21st, 2009, 02:09 AM Whereabouts is Dundee?
makoppa January 21st, 2009, 04:46 AM South of Newcastle in northern Natal
GregPz January 21st, 2009, 09:44 AM It's very difficult to tell how fast city populations have been growing as we've gone through a phase where municipal boundaries have been constantly changed resulting in big population changes. Now that city boundaries are more established we'll be able to get a better idea in future.
Lydon January 21st, 2009, 10:08 AM When's the next full-blown census?
annman January 21st, 2009, 11:48 AM I want to see urban growth according to Gross Metropolitan Product, that's the real indicator of growth, not just an influx of rural poor looking for work. I think the George/Mossel Bay region would be pretty impressive. That small city seems to just go from economic strength to strength. Driving on the N2 there, every year the place looks like it's burgeoning!
dysan1 January 21st, 2009, 06:40 PM ^^ holiday homes.....
GregPz January 21st, 2009, 06:47 PM Apparently Pretoria has the highest GDP per capita
annman January 21st, 2009, 07:35 PM ^^ holiday homes.....
More than just holiday homes going up... there are actually very few vacationers in George itself. Herolds Bay, yes, Wilderness, yes, but not George. I'm talking about all the malls, restaurants, offices, industrial buildings and stores I've seen pop up everywhere.
Gulivar January 23rd, 2009, 01:33 PM Apparently Pretoria has the highest GDP per capita
Really? Where did you hear this?
grjplanes January 23rd, 2009, 05:00 PM More than just holiday homes going up... there are actually very few vacationers in George itself. Herolds Bay, yes, Wilderness, yes, but not George. I'm talking about all the malls, restaurants, offices, industrial buildings and stores I've seen pop up everywhere.
We've had real booming time the last few years, but unfortunately like in most other places economic woes also hit here and several shops closed or is closing down and many of the shopping centres are struggling to keep tenants. After the Garden Route Mall opened in George 3 years ago many centres in town still kept going allright. But now two of larger centres lost their main tenants and subsequently also many smaller ones then. Game out of one centre, and Ster-Kinekor from another (both companies having a store in the mall as well). Business people in the CBD and of these centres complain alot, but unfortunately I think landlords of the older centres in town is also to blame, not really investing in upgrading and beautifying their buildings.
Still many office park developments is still on the cards and seem to be going ahead this year as well as many industrial developments. From this still bring alot of residential development, but definitely less than the last years.
Also there is still big plans ahead from developers that plan things for the next ten years (so not letting current situations put them off), like Eden Meander (bigger shopping mall and office park with residential flats), Destiny Africa (Conference, Recreation (theme-park), Hotels, Waterfront, Shopping and offices...been in the planning for more than 5 years now). Also Waterfront development around the Garden Route Dam and also many residential and business development to the south of the city to extend it to the sea (Pacaltsdorp/Hansmoeskraal area).
It's been mentioned before that the George/MosselBay area might become one metropole within the next 10 to 20 years, with George still being the economic/business/industrial hub and MosselBay the Holiday hub, with the airport nicely situated in the middle!
GregPz January 24th, 2009, 02:36 PM Really? Where did you hear this?
Was mentioned in a newspaper report about a month ago. Tried finding it on the net but no luck...can't remember what the main story was about.

Yuri S Andrade February 19th, 2009, 04:28 PM Note the figures for Johannesburg Municipality and Johannesburg Metro (and PWV as well). Analysing only the White community, we could say that Johannesburg is an English island surrounded by an Afrikaners' ocean.:)

juanw June 12th, 2010, 08:18 PM I wonder how long it will take for Durban and Pietermaritzburg to grow into each other to form a super metro down here?
annman June 13th, 2010, 04:19 PM ^^ Where's Pretoria? Did they lump that with Johannesburg? Because, actually Pretoria is our 4th largest city, not PE.
Method June 13th, 2010, 05:18 PM I wonder how long it will take for Durban and Pietermaritzburg to grow into each other to form a super metro down here?
Probably not for a long time as most development in that area is along the coast.

Ye, that must be the whole of gauteng put together, or atleast the PWV.

They shouldn't just lump them together they are different cities. :bash:
Yuri S Andrade January 23rd, 2011, 02:52 AM I'm always visiting the SA Statiscal Offices, and I also elaborated some lists as well. However in the case of Johannesburg, besides East Rand, I included West Rand too. There's also a PWV, including the whole Gauteng, Sasolburg (Orange Free State), Delmas (Mpumalanga), Brits and Carletonville (both on North West).

I just added the last 4 cities in the list. Looking forward to 2011 Census!
goliath01 January 23rd, 2011, 02:39 PM I love it that they separte whites from Afrikaners, whats the difference, dont both come from Europe?
Yuri S Andrade January 23rd, 2011, 03:11 PM ^^
Who are "they"? Well, the difference is Afrikaners speak Afrikaans and English speak English.
The Afrikaners and the English are also very separated on geographical basis. While the English-speaking are heavily concentrated in 3 specific points: Cape Town (Southern Suburbs), Durban and Johannesburg (Northern Suburbs) and also along Indian coast, Afrikaners, however, are spread all around the country, except for Natal seabord and the old Bantustans.
Taking as an example, Johannesburg Municipality, Johannesburg Metro and PWV, we can say Johannesburg is an "English island" (Jo'burg Northern suburbs) surrounded by an "Afrikaners' ocean" (East and West Rands, Pretoria, Vaal Triangle). So, the white community are separated even inside the same city. Aside Johannesburg, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth are the only cities where there are huge numbers of both Afrikaners and English living in. In Cape Town, the English live basically on the southern suburbs, while the Afrikaners on the northern and eastern suburbs on the way to the vineyard areas, which are basically Afrikaner as the rest of South Africa countryside. In Port Elizabeth, the English live on the suburbs closer to the ocean, while the Afrikaners on the internal suburbs, around the former Uitenhage city.
dysan1 January 23rd, 2011, 03:42 PM And in Durban if you see an Afrikaaner you ask them how they are enjoying their holiday here.

That's true. Durban is very British indeed, the best synthesis of the British Empire: British, Indians and Africans.
Anyway, back in Cape Town, I studied on CBD, but lived in southern suburbs which are very very English. Aside the Coloureds, I don't remember hearing people speaking Afrikaans in those areas. On Paarl is the opposite: only Afrikaners and Coloureds, so Afrikaans stands alone.
Interestingly enough however, my host-mother (married with an Englishman) was an anglicized-Afrikaner. My classmate host-mother, also living in southern suburbs, was an anglicized-Afrikaner too. She was a very interesting character, a kind of hippie middle-aged wine-drunk woman, who dropped Afrikaans, as she told me, after the 1976 riots. However, she still felt very attached to the language, as I could notice it while she showed me her impressive Afrikaans library. Anyway, I know it's only my personal experience, but it seems to be a lot of anglicized-Afrikaners on the Cape Town's southern suburbs.
EduardSA January 24th, 2011, 10:44 AM ^^ I have two Afrikaanse friends who can barely speak the language. So yes, Southern Suburbs: heavily anglicized.

My English teacher back in Cape Town, daughter of an English father and an Afrikaner mother, said to us she forgot the language (!). And that's in Cape Town, where half of the people speaks Afrikaans as first language.
Rosaudio February 3rd, 2011, 08:01 PM Yes, Southern Subs very VERY English, which is why I live here :P Can't speak a work of Afrikaans!
jimmialli February 12th, 2011, 08:10 PM I love it that they separte whites from Afrikaners, whats the difference, dont both come from Europe?
They do not separate whites from Afrikaners, they break white numbers into Afrikaans and English - if you sum the numbers you will see they add up. :) There are heaps of Afrikaners in Durban - they just speak perfect English.
jimmialli February 12th, 2011, 08:16 PM Apparently Pretoria has the highest GDP per capita
Makes sense since it is full of civil servants!

Really???? Hmmm with only 1 odd percent having it as home lanuage I would think you are wrong you basically never here it in durban.
romanSA February 13th, 2011, 05:35 PM Actually, there are 5 people in my company alone (who I know of) who speak Afrikaans as a first language (and another who just left). This is approx 2% of our workforce. This is not necessarily representative of the rest of Durbs, but I think that as job and accomodation (as 2nd / vacation home) opportunities open in Durban, we will find more Afrikaners moving and living here.
romanSA February 13th, 2011, 05:43 PM An article in today's Sunday Tribune, citing the latest population stats released by the Bureau of Market Research, ranks Durban as the country's most populated municipality (3.7m). KZN is ranked first in the country out of the 9 provinces with 10.7m vs 2nd place Gauteng with just under 9.2m. Western Cape is ranked 5th (behind Eastern Cape and Limpopo) with just under 6m.
Nostra February 14th, 2011, 09:04 AM ^^Obviously the KZN economy will not surpass Gauteng's in the near future, but based on it's population and geography, DBN will be an economic powerfouse over the next decade and a half...

Please let them learn English first!

ONLY if we educate the totally uneducated rural masses. The global trend is towards coastal economies and coastal migration, i do not see us missing that trend
GregPz February 16th, 2011, 08:47 AM The next census will be interesting. That Bureau of Market Research report is contrary to other reports which indicate that Gauteng's population now exceeds KZN's and that CT and Joburg's populations are increasing at the fastest rate.
dysan1 February 16th, 2011, 11:42 AM ^^ and thats the problem. All the studies have vastly different views and sizing. quite scary

I suspect Gauteng has overtaken KZN. If so, this will have vast implication re: revenue sharing formula of the provinces in future budgets.
