kiretoce January 14th, 2009, 08:29 AM Just my opinion. I think we should just post raw, untouched photos, minus the enhancements.
Waldenstrom January 14th, 2009, 08:56 AM ^ i agree. but there are point and shoot cameras where you can choose 'scenes' like sepia, negative, etc. i think it's okay. let's just tell if we did some image enhancements. :)

SSCers are great photographers! Keep 'em coming.
kiretoce January 15th, 2009, 08:47 AM ^^ Thanks, Jeff! But I think it would've been better if I had taken it during the morning hours since the sun would be coming from the opposite side and would illuminate her face more.
icarusrising January 15th, 2009, 09:05 AM ^^ I like the Chandelier too. Around what time was the picture of Lady Liberty taken, Red? The lines are rather suffused.
http://images.icarusrising.multiply.com/image/2/photos/169/1200x1200/1/IMGP5541.JPG?et=9TjUr6%2BZnhxa6Yt4dsYaqw&nmid=169749875
I should probably crop the photo since I want those two girls to be the focus... Any suggestion guys?
kiretoce January 15th, 2009, 09:14 AM ^^ The eyes automatically zero in on the structure in the background before you even notice the two girls in the foreground. And the contrast between light and dark is very pronounced in the V-shaped event horizon which draws your sight to its inverted apex first.
About my Lady Liberty photos; that was taken in October 2008 (Autumn). The conditions were sunny yet windy, plus the seaspray from the water added to the effect.

Lili January 21st, 2009, 08:57 PM ^^ Hey Juan! LTNS! (Long Time No See!) Nice shots!
@Kimber: wow, that hospital is so avant garde and futuristic! Nice contrast with the classical buildings featured in Juan's (manileno) photos. :okay:
kiretoce January 22nd, 2009, 04:04 AM ^^ Yup! I was in awe when I saw the building as I was driving up to it. The interiors looks like a hotel. Too bad I didn't have time to snap photos of it.
icarusrising January 22nd, 2009, 04:37 AM ^^ Great shots, Kimber. Brings to mind the Westin Bonaventure in LA. However, this building has a playfulness in it that would make it at home even in Epcot Center.
kiretoce January 22nd, 2009, 05:11 AM ^^ Thanks, Isagani! Yeah, it does blend in with the other structures at EPCOT Center, very whimsical and unconventional.

The Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital fits in nicely in Orlando. Jonathan Bailey and Associates also designed a hospital in Cairo that has similar features.

Hehe. Thanks. Was just walking in the uni going to the ATM when I chanced upon this fantasy-like nook by the stream. Lucky I always bring my handy old digi hehe (I actually wished I had an SLR) . I don't think I can take the credit though. You could point and shoot anywhere and the shots would still be great. I was just there witnessing nature at its vainest moment hehe. It was like walking into a dream really.

Remember that point and shoot cameras doesn't have the lens and shutter speed zoom thingy...
This photo was taken from my Olympus Mu-800 and with a bit tweaking with Photoshop...that's the finish product.
To be honest, I was quite insecure during the coverage since I get intimidated with the cameras they are using in the coverage...high powered dSLRs.

Even though if heritage conservation purists want to have it removed but since it is stipulated in one of the three schools of heritage conservation thought that anything that has a significance in the society or historical value, despite the change, would be considered as part of the church.
In 1981, Pope John Paul II personally crowned the Virgin of Candelaria and said mass in the platform and stepped on the very stairways...now considered "holy" by the Archdiocese.
A lot of factors have also been considered...especially the Salognons (Jaroeños) mentioned that the lady herself chose the said area of platform...
One major argument of the priests (which I know it applies althroughout the islands) is that churches here in the Philippines are "living" unlike their "dead" counterparts in Europe...

habagatcentral1 February 3rd, 2009, 05:39 AM Low lighting, overcast skies...quite a challenge to point and shoot photography

laquacherra February 3rd, 2009, 11:26 AM ^^ i agree, low light is indeed a challenge esp for p&s but overcast skies can be great because colors won't get washed out the way they do during mid day when the sun is bright.
manileño February 3rd, 2009, 03:31 PM another challenge with p&s is to keep still. both the device and the subject while taking a picture. this pic for instance struggled with the focus as both the subject and the camera (or the one taking it, in this case me!) were in motion hehe. the low lighting may have contributed to the motion blur as well. but anyway this stuff is basic. hehe! i still liked the result nonetheless..

that's sugarcane juan....
habagatcentral1 February 3rd, 2009, 03:43 PM Actually, one of the things I'm practicing or experimenting in P&S photography is the subject itself is clear yet there is motion blur in the background...something that most dSLR photography attain during low lighting conditions.
manileño February 3rd, 2009, 08:15 PM ^ good luck with your experiment, bernardo. may i suggest the subject to be you standing and sort of flexing in the street, with people and buildings in the background all blurred except you, making it look like an earthquake occured and was caused by you. hehe :D oh and dont forget your hamburger in the pictorial. hehehe J/K!! :nocrook:

pi_malejana February 5th, 2009, 08:30 AM nyc is an urban heat monster... you wouldn't even know it snowed except when you got to parks (e.g. central park)... and besides, we'll be hitting 50's on weekend so i don't know if it'll stay... furthermore, i'm not seeing any threat for the next week... are you gonna be here on President's Day?? i feel like we can have a part III of that this year.. the past two President's Day snow storms, 1970's and 2003, had a combined snowfall total of about 40"...

kiretoce February 7th, 2009, 09:19 PM ^^ Hmm....red brick facades are rare in Philippine architecture, right? That actually reminds me of old campus churches in the northeastern US, especially in Ivy League universities.
habagatcentral1 February 8th, 2009, 05:15 AM ^^ I think not. Because I think some Ilocos Spanish colonial churches have red brick facades too...In Iloilo, mostly its limestone or coralstone. The only red brick churches are at Pavia and Cabatuan while the one at Dumangas is mixed.
By the way, that facade was nearing collapse a few years back, that is why the parish priest ordered the restoration of the said church facade not only for safety but also for aesthetic purposes as well.
icarusrising February 8th, 2009, 05:28 AM ^^ I know that facades usually mean the front of a building but sometimes the sides too. Just for clarification, it wasn't taken from the front, my friend. It was taken from the side near where the late Mr. Bernardo Arellano lies. And you know I'm not referring to you... :)

icarusrising February 15th, 2009, 05:07 PM @ XP: there are budget ways to get there and enjoy the place. Try mo sa CebuPac or econolight fares ng PAL. There are certain days when it's cheaper. Also if you're traveling as a group there's a package for that too. It's usually more affordable to travel in groups because you can share in the expenses. Our room was good for six and we paid around 2,500 per night so mga 500 per night lang sa amin yun kasi 5 kami. Ginto ang presyo ng mga pagkain sa beach pero you can buy things for a song at the grocery and talipapa. Ask for quotations from different sources and compare rates. Clarify what is inclusive in the deal.

Kiko, I agree. It's hard to capture photos of butterflies but I think fishes are the hardest! 2 weeks ago, I was at MOP and I was really irritated with the fishes. Ang hirap picturan! :D Ayun, I ended up hating them instead of appreciating them. j/k I'll post photos soon.

in the MOP thread.
all taken with
the very reliable
Canon Powershot
S5 IS.
waldenstrom is right.
it was very challenging.
the lack of light didn't
help at all. any photo above
ISO 200 using this camera
is really grainy. :bash:
Waldenstrom February 21st, 2009, 08:03 PM ^^ damn great!!! :D now, i really have to practice using this camera. :D
anakngpasig February 22nd, 2009, 01:46 AM ^^ thanks po!
do you
shoot in manual
mode, sir?
there's an aquarium scene feature
in S5 IS but it doesn't work well
because it jacks up the ISO level
to infinite LOL, and it's no good
kasi di naman pang dslr sensor
ng cam. :D

Ph Man February 22nd, 2009, 06:33 AM what you did panning in manila ocean park? i didn't realize it works with prosumer cams. question on the aquarium mode: have you not encountered grainy frames?
anakngpasig February 22nd, 2009, 06:52 AM ^^
i've tried that
mode and didn't
want to use it again
after the first shot
yes, you can
definitely
pan with any
camera. a slightly
slow shutter speed
should do the trick
:D
Ph Man February 23rd, 2009, 07:02 PM yes i know about panning. ;) what's new to me is using aquarium fishes in panning. i have seen panning photos mostly in sports photography. but not with fishes. good work by the way. :okay:
anakngpasig February 24th, 2009, 11:53 AM ^^
he he i think that
panning was the best
solution to the problem
of
1. me refusing to use higher
ISO because the cam's sensor
is not as good as a DSLR's
2. the terrible lighting leaving
me with no choice but
to use a slow shutter speed on
fast moving subjects.
;)
thanks po!
Ph Man February 24th, 2009, 04:41 PM i encountered the very same problems during my two visits of similar parks. here are some frames i got:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3152/2483951374_1efbbdcd1c.jpg
next time, i'll try panning. what shutter speed did you use @ anakngpasig? we were told to use 1/15sec in photo class.
i settled for the less mobile subjects:

You'd be surprised. When I was there, kids were so camera aware (the beginnings of camwhoring). They would actually ask you to take photos of them not for money but just for the sake of having their photos taken. I was amazed and amused.
