Mantas December 19th, 2003, 05:06 PM Hi folks,
I was wondering why nobody creates such thread were we could post pix. So here we gonna have it :D
First of all, the basic allows:
1) You're allowed to post here any picture related with northern europe
2) No pornography ;)
The basic disallows:
1) You're allowed to post up to 10 pix in one reply.
2) You're not allowed to post 2 or more replies with pix at one time (wait, until posts somebody else)
Mantas December 19th, 2003, 05:26 PM I'll start with mine ;)

Gatis January 28th, 2004, 10:52 AM Just one picture from Riga. The view from Bastejkalns Hill (possibly from tree in that hill) over the boulevards to the centrum of city. Liberty Monument in the middle. You know - in Riga the Old City once had walls around. Now these walls are away and instead of them there are two great boulevards with parks around. Should make separate thread about them.
Picture made by artist Janis Knakis. He somehow decided to blur the background.

Nightsky April 25th, 2004, 12:27 PM I have bought a new digicam with 4 megapixels resolution, 3x optic zoom, a built in (low res.) video camera and color display. 2400 skr at Lidl in Malmö. 64MB extra memory, a case, cables and charger.
That means many nice new pics of Turning Torso, Malmö, Copenhagen and other cities I will travel to!

Mortar & Pestle May 15th, 2004, 08:23 AM Hello Vaidas :hi:
Swell pictures! What makes them even more presentable is that you have handsome borders around them. Would you mind telling me how you achieve those borders???
:?
Vaidas May 15th, 2004, 08:54 AM Well I use a triple border. (2 pixels black + 15 pixels white + 1 pixel black)
It is much easier to do this with the normal photoshop, but it's possible with elements as well.
You have to go: Image -> image size -> canvas size. Then increase the width and height of you picture by the desired amount of pixels. (note, that you have to increase it f.ex. by 4 pixels in order to get a 2 pixel border) So you will have a border around your picture in the "background" color.
It is good to get a 1-coloured border but you will have to switch to the normal photoshop if you want something more...
The cool thing on Photoshop is "actions", where you can "record" a sequence of actions and later just press the "play button" on every picture. That's how I make the borders on my pictures.
Sadly, Elements doesn't have this feature (or I just couldn't find it :?)

Oberleutnant May 20th, 2004, 12:29 PM @ M&P
Sorry, mate. I hadn't noticed your question!
I myself use the good old line tool for making borders in Photoshop. Recently, I haven't used borders in pics, as I don't know what design to use next.
Novotel's building would be welcomed in any other part of the town with its fiftyish retro look, but not in the Old Town.
http://img67.photobucket.com/albums/v203/M4nt4s/IMGP4129.jpg
What was the Vilnius City Planning Department / Council thinking, when they approved this?!

Looking niiiice.
@ Sdes
Thanks for posting your Pitäjänmäki pics. SysOpen is an ok tower, not great, but ok. I find it weird how short it looks like in real life and the pics, even though it's 70 meters tall. Municipality Building in Vilnius is seven meters taller, but looks like a real skyscraper.
Got more pics of Terassitalo?
sdes May 20th, 2004, 01:35 PM Very nice pics Mantaz. I love the municipality facade.
Ober you're right, SysOpen tower looks kinda short. Kone building in Keilaniemi looks short too, compared to the Fortum which is only 14meters taller. Maybe because Fortum is so massive.
Terassitalo

Mortar & Pestle May 20th, 2004, 08:20 PM @ Oberleutnant...thanks for the info. This method has now been affirmed and reaffirmed by many a forumer, so I guess I can safely set about creating some borders in this way. :D
Mortar & Pestle May 20th, 2004, 08:35 PM btw, Juno'Re, Mantaz & sdes...
You all have beautiful contributions to this thread! Juno'Re, the picture of the camoflauge insect on the flower stalk is stunning! Say, what kind of camera do you use? Did you employ a telephoto lens in that one??

LV ELF June 1st, 2004, 09:43 AM My mistake, sorry... I am newcommer here :wallbash:
Monkey June 1st, 2004, 09:56 AM Thank you for this lovely Riga series, LV ELF! :) I like the way you introduce your pictures by giving them captions--much appreciated! :okay:
Unfortunately, yahoo doesn't allow hotlinking, so all I see are red XXXs. :(
I'm sure the prime photographers here at the S&B forum will be able and indeed happy to recommend to you a picture host that allows hotlinking--i.e., people can see the pictures without going through the laborious show properties, copy, blabla etc. process. As I remember, photobucket and lycos are providers of this service.
So thank you, and keep at it, OK? :horse:
Mantas June 1st, 2004, 10:18 AM @LV ELF I suggest using www.photobucket.com instead of the hosting that doesn't allow hotlinking ;)
LV ELF June 1st, 2004, 10:24 AM Sorry, my mistake... i was not aware of the rules
Monkey June 1st, 2004, 10:27 AM LV ELF doesn't seem to be listening, Mantai. ;)
But I'm sure he will--soon! :)
P.S. @ LV ELF: Mantaz IS one of our prime photographers. :okay:
Mantas June 1st, 2004, 10:33 AM Btw @LV ELF some rules were defined in the introducting post of this thread like posting more than 10 photos and 2 posts at a row are prohibited ;)

Oberleutnant June 13th, 2004, 12:47 AM Yesterday, the Finnish Navy and the Border Guard had public day in Helsinki. Some ships from the Navy and Border Guard were present in Helsinki's south harbour near the downtown. The weather was horrible, but I managed to take few decent pictures from the event. Here are some:

To be frank, my visit to Turku was a real eye opener. Based on what I saw there, I think it's quite possible that I might one day even live there. I absolutely loved that city. It was my first visit there . . . and I fell in love with the place. :D

Actually I have no idea, I was there only shortly to get photos of the highrises (there's 12 of those). I would think that most young people in Brøndby plays football, since they have the best Danish team over the last 20 years (maybe not anymore), Brøndby IF.

Mantas July 18th, 2004, 05:21 PM Vuosaari is like Vasara in lithuanian which means Summer :D
Oberleutnant July 19th, 2004, 06:23 PM Coincidentally, vasara means a hammer in Finnish.
I've been to Vuosaari once, this March. With the exception of Itäkeskus, it's one of the few eastern Helsinki suburbs I've dared to enter. ;) It was a rather postive surprise, especially the Aurinkolahti area.

My apartment is about half a kilometer from that place. I've featured Merihaka (the commieblock district) quite often in many threads, so you might remember it from there.
Here's a picture of Hotel Torni I took for Atlantica when he was making a diagram of it for SSP. Just for the fun of it I decided to try what it would look like if I converted it into bw.

Hotel Torni is the grandfather of all Finnish high-rises, built in the early 1930s and still the only one you can find from downtown Helsinki.

Oberleutnant August 5th, 2004, 01:37 PM :D
Jarmo showed me that Stalinistic building and I took a picture of it, but it wasn't very succesful so I didn't put it in the thread. IMHO it's not a bad building at all, but could use a bucket of paint or two.

ch1le August 5th, 2004, 01:40 PM ok ober... fine, now what about that Part 2 of tallinn? hmm? i cant sleep at nights because of you! :)
hehehe my pic is totally off charts, its off centre, then its too dark, i can see wires... in 1 word, its a mess :), mhm :bash:
Oberleutnant August 5th, 2004, 01:47 PM Episode 2 has been delayed a bit, due to my general lazyness and my preparation for my course exam about strategic management. The weather might have something to do with it, too. :)
"Soon!" is all I can say for the moment.
Your pic isn't that bad. It's good to always take as many pictures as possible. For example, I always take about five to fifteen pictures of a single building from different angles (some of them from the same position) and then hope that at least one of them is good enough. You can always go through them using your camera's LCD monitor, and check which ones look good there. Then delete the rest if you need to make space for more pics.
And your pic isn't too dark, methinks, given the circumstances (that gray sky wasn't very good for taking photos).

Great shot! I know you're making a website, and I'm wondering if you plan to include a picture gallery as wel? :)
Great photos all:okay:
I've actually had that site for about a year or so now, but I really can't decide what I should make. Currently I just use it as a photo host and things like that.
But a gallery is no bad idea:)
sdes August 6th, 2004, 12:30 AM "density" :)

One of the best pics of NCC that I have ever seen. Great photo, John :)
Oberleutnant August 6th, 2004, 11:32 AM To quote McDonald's: "I'm loving it!" It's the best NCC photo I can remember, together with Pornstar's zoomed shots. EA is simply gorgeous, and while ET could be better - at least it's tall.
ch1le August 6th, 2004, 12:05 PM at first i thought you had photoshopped it... but apparently not...its great, though i have some doubts about LG building... will they tear it down or renovate it sometime soon?
otherwise great photo :)

That must be the best picture of Vilnius I've seen!
They could do something about that commieblock, though.
Devilution August 6th, 2004, 12:16 PM Wow! That "Density" shot is just amazing!
John August 6th, 2004, 12:43 PM Wow thank you guys, I din't expect so many positive reactions :D
well only thing which is really wrong is the sky (top right), it's white because it was a bit cloudy and the sun was gone somewhere.
As for ET, the more I see it the more I like it, it's a really good building IMO, it was even selected among top 15 competitors in some International skyscraper competiton arranged by the municipality of Frankfurt am Main earlier this year.
sdes August 8th, 2004, 10:50 PM My first shot of lightning. I took about 100 photos, and this is the only one where you can actually see the lightning.

mlm August 11th, 2004, 03:18 AM They're currently building a new motorway around Herning, so a few weeks ago a friend and I went out there to see the progress. Here are a few random photos from the area:
First we have 2 of a new lake they're making (using the sand for the motorway)

And finally our power plant, just next to this there will be a huge intersection. The lake is also new:

Oberleutnant August 16th, 2004, 11:27 AM :)
That pic was taken in Kerava, my old hometown. It's not far from Helsinki-Vantaa airport and planes which haven't been given a landing clearance circle over the town. They are a common sight there.

"Skyline" of the city of Espoo as seen from Helsinki (well, they're practically the same city).
NorthStar77 August 16th, 2004, 12:09 PM Cool, looks very hazy!
Oberleutnant August 16th, 2004, 06:34 PM It was a bit hazy at the time I took the picture. The distance from the stadium tower from where I took that pic to those towers is about five kilometers or more.
Jarmo K August 16th, 2004, 06:42 PM verrrrry kewl photos everybody!

Oberleutnant August 17th, 2004, 10:50 PM Sad to hear that c1le. :I

have fun :D
LatvianGG August 23rd, 2004, 01:47 PM Cewl pics , especially the last one - of Tallin suburb, makes me think of Imanta suburb in Riga
Mantas August 23rd, 2004, 01:52 PM Welcome LatvianCG
Gatis August 23rd, 2004, 02:27 PM The one from Tallinn is surprising! If frankly - I do not think that there is anything similar in Riga. Yess... in Imanta there is semicircle, but less regular.
LatvianGG August 24th, 2004, 10:07 PM Does anybody has some pictures of how the new ice hockey hall will look like?

I can see my house there!
Õismäe is a great district! very green, few criminals and....or maybe I shouldn't promote commieblocks.....
Mantas August 24th, 2004, 10:13 PM There are 3 euqal circles in Vilnius, Pasilaiciai district and 1 almost circle is in Lazdynai and is called Architektu street :)
LatvianGG August 30th, 2004, 01:12 PM I found a nice pic of Riga.....

Oberleutnant September 6th, 2004, 11:35 PM DnH, www.photobucket.com is a much better place for storing your pics. They let you put pictures of any resolution you want as long as their size stays at 250 kilos.
Sdes, I hope you're still planning to make a thread about Vuosaari when they start building Cirrus. :)
Ch1le, outstanding! Any change to see ground-level shots of that suburb?
LatvianGG September 7th, 2004, 12:01 AM DnH, www.photobucket.com is a much better place for storing your pics. They let you put pictures of any resolution you want as long as their size stays at 250 kilos.
www.imageshack.us - it lets you store pics max.1024 kb size, and, unlike photobucket, the pics stay visible all time, no bandwidth or something like that. Just try that one.

Sorry mate, but this is certainly not the oldest building in Espoo. You forgot the Espoon tuomiokirkko! :) Dating back to the 14th century at least...
Oberleutnant September 7th, 2004, 12:23 PM Garh, that's what you get when you trust your parents' knowledge of local history! :D

Sometimes I find pretty good stuff on my computer (gotta upload this one to emporis in the original 1.5MB version).
Jo September 8th, 2004, 11:39 PM What a coincidence, I was there two days ago and this tower, although only 12 storey, immediately grabbed my attention with its shape. Never heard about the building before.
Yeah it seems completed... still empty though :)

karackhal September 13th, 2004, 07:46 AM i dunno it kinda seems like a copy of some other building i have seen somewhere but i cant recall where.
Horrible yes..... but true :ancient: :poke:
sander October 1st, 2004, 08:55 PM Nice pictures...Swedish commieblocks remind Eastern-European counterparts a little bit. I found three aerial photos of Tallinn.
