View Full Version : My pilgrimage to India
Illusionist January 15th, 2009, 11:48 PM I took a trip to India from Dec 3 2008 to Jan 8 2009. I will be posting my travel experience and pictures in this thread. Please follow me as i post my exciting journey to our Motherland with tons of pictures.
This is my home trip after 2 years and i have seen a lot of changes in our dear motherland.
I will be covering Delhi, Jaipur, Devli, Shajapur, Bhopal, Indore, Mandsaur, Pune, Mumbai , several small towns of rajasthan and pictures of my journey in between those cities.
In my trip i have noticed two different types of India. One is the new shining, affluent and developing India with awesome skyscrapers and buildings. I call it 45 degrees India as one raises his/her head in awe to see those huge and modern buildings.
The other India i noticed is what i call 0 degree India. The India on the streets, to the low level that you see right in front of you where most of our country lives and needs a huge improvement.
Please bear with my english and follow me in this journey.
Regards
This is yours truly ;)

Illusionist January 15th, 2009, 11:57 PM Day One in India.
I landed in Delhi on Dec 4 and drove to Jaipur.
Delhi Airport Pics. Sorry about the quality as i shot those pics in wrong mode.
Delhi's airport is refurbished and is a huge improvement from what we had earlier. This time it took me only 5 mins to go past the immigration and another 5 mins to get my luggage. I was out of airport within 15 mins of landing. Now that is impressive to me as i spent hours in my last trip.
Walking towards immigration counters.

The new airport sports a nice smoking lounge at the departures. Whole lounge is impressive as it has different shops, coffee shops and phone booths.
but i was disappointed by the AC. it didnt work when i landed and it didnt work when i left.:ohno:
Illusionist January 15th, 2009, 11:59 PM Outside the airport.
I saw enhanced security as that day there was a threat of attack at DIAL. Parking was not so nice but wasnt that bad either. I could see T3 being constructed but my little camera wasnt good enough to take night pics at a distance.

Illusionist January 16th, 2009, 12:15 AM World Trade Center as of Dec 5th. The construction work is going very fast. i noticed a lot of work in a month.
This place is gonna be the most happening place in Jaipur. it will have an indoor golf course, under water restaurant, mall, movie theaters etc etc. it is located right next to gaurav towers which currently is a hot spot for young people. Euromast took pics of same tower within last month. you can check out more pics in his thread.

One impressive thing about Jaipur's new roads is that they have a multilane huge street in the center for heavy and fast traffic and service roads on either sides for the local and slow traffic. good thinking ahead
Illusionist January 16th, 2009, 02:11 AM 11/12/2008
Trip to Khatu shyam in rajasthan starting from Jaipur. There is a famous temple of khatu shyam ji at that place.
Jaipur loves roundabouts. There are so many of them and most of them have a statue in the center. Some are nice and rest are pain in the neck.
This is TriMurti circle built in the memory of the fallen police officers. BTW they have traffic lights at the circle ;)
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa176/indrajal/Travel/IndiaTrip2008009.jpg
Westend mall. It is located in the wrong place at a very busy intersection. people have tough time reaching to it.
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa176/indrajal/Travel/IndiaTrip2008010.jpg
So they built an overhead pedestrian bridge connecting to the roads on two different sides. It is in final stages. it has escaleters on all the sides. guess either mall people built it or they bribed some neta to build it from our tax payers rupees. It is very nice though.

Illusionist January 16th, 2009, 02:17 AM I had no idea that they were building BRTS in jaipur. It is in the outer jaipur towards sikar road. They demolished lots of shops on the road to make way for the BRTS. Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) is very strong agency and they have been doing a very good job.
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa176/indrajal/Travel/IndiaTrip2008015.jpg
Saw few people driving on the completed BRTS lane.

Jaipur sikar road. it has been well maintained since forever.
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa176/indrajal/Travel/IndiaTrip2008022.jpg
Other thing Rajasthan love is these gates. They serve no purpose but still built by some seth for name recognition and to beatify the town.
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa176/indrajal/Travel/IndiaTrip2008025.jpg
Illusionist January 16th, 2009, 02:25 AM This is khatu shyam ji's temple . small but very famous. There is no statue in the temple but a head of khatu shyam. Legend goes that king khatu was going to participate in the mahabharat war from the kaurav's side. he was very powerful and krishna got concerned. he came as a brahmin and asked khatu's head at this place where kahtu was resting with his army. Khatu recoganized krishna and asked him to hang his head on a tree on top of a mountain so he could atleast see the war. hence the temple of a head only
love those mahabharat stories :)
i didnt take pictures inside but i visited this place again and took more pics. i will post them as i progress with my travelogue.

is that pic taken in chokhi dhani??
Illusionist January 18th, 2009, 01:26 AM Thanks guys. believe me , lot more pictures are coming your way.
Jodhpur: No it is not choki dhani. it is national tribal fair at jawahar kala kendra. I tried to go to chokhi dhani on christmas but it was so crowded that i decided to not go there.
One thing i can assure you guys that there seems to be no effect of recent mumbai massacre on foreign tourists. I saw so many tourists both english speaking and non english speaking in my trip . it came to me as a surprise. take that terrorist mofos..
Illusionist January 18th, 2009, 01:31 AM Now i will be posting pictures from my Delhi trip. it was one day trip. i went there by train from jaipur and came back on a bus.
Delhi is progressing very fast. When you are about to enter delhi you get a vibe that you are entering in a big , modern and vibrent city. you dont get that feeling everywhere in india. Specially while you go to indore you feel like you are entering in a big mess :ohno:
Delhi Railway Station.
Delhi railway station has this old feeling. it is really not up to the standards. it is an eyesore to the rest of the developing delhi. it was clean for an indian railway station but not up to the mark for a capitol of a country.

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa176/indrajal/Travel/Thirdbatch008.jpg
Illusionist January 18th, 2009, 01:58 AM When you come out of delhi railway station you are confused if you are an outsider. you dont know how to get to your destination and all those autowallas and rikshawalls are asking you to go with them. Then it strikes you that you can take metro. all of sudden your mood changes and you feel like you know this city and you can go anywhere. you start expecting that its gonna be an awesome experience and rightfully so metro fulfills your expectations. :)
then you ask those autowalls about nearest metro station and they point at the corner of railway station's compound with a broken heart and scatter away.
They built metro station right in the main railway station which is awesome.
Delhi Metro
This is a time worm hole which takes you from a 0 degree india to 45 degrees india in an instant.

The initial pics of the metro construction are of Line 2 on Aurobindo marg. The pics at the very end are of the Airport Express Line u/c on the Dhaula Kuan road.
btw, why did the bus take an exit on the DGE and pass below the flyover?
Euromast January 18th, 2009, 10:45 AM Gr8 pics Vishnu. Did u see the Ajmeri gate side of the Delhi railway station?
There was supposed to be renovation work going on there. Ajmeri gate side is the main entrance to the Delhi Train station
Illusionist January 19th, 2009, 01:26 AM Thanks guys. :)
IU: The bus didnt take the exit to get off the road. As far as i remember he kept on taking exits and getting back on highway. I thought it was kinda odd too.
Euromast: I didnt know where the Ajmeri gate side of delhi railway station was. My coach stopped almost at the main exit so i left quickly. i was in a rush so didnt get time to look around. I didnt notice any construction/renovation on the side i posted pics of.
monyaam January 19th, 2009, 06:35 PM Great pics!!
What are those guys doing standing infront of the cars at the toll, trying to stop cars
that try to skip paying toll?
btw, DM has set a solid benchmark for public transportation in india. Its sophisticated, affordable
,efficient and help reduce social divide.
Illusionist January 19th, 2009, 09:05 PM Monyaam: Those people in greenish jacket manage the traffic , they maintain the lines of cars. and the people in orange jacket take the money from you and give it to the toll booth guy and return your change. labor is cheap you know.
After spending few more days in Jaipur i went on a road trip for 4 days. i travelled for 4 days and covered 1700 kms. I stopped by at Devli, shajapur, bhopal, indore and mandsaur.
The first set of pictures are from my journey to Devli in Rajasthan from Jaipur. Devli is a small town but has a Dam called Bisalpur dam which provides water to a lot of cities.

I talked to the boatmen and they said their homes came in "Doob area" but they got compensated. with the money they bought house somewhere else and for an occupation govt game them permission to ferry people for fun. they seemed to be happy about the whole thing, they got a new house, good cash in hand and a job.

Illusionist January 27th, 2009, 01:37 AM Indore is one of those big cities which have immense potential but long overlooked in terms of the infrastructure. Despite being one of the business hub of central India it fairs very poorly in providing class infrastructure to its people and to businesses. Change comes slow in Indore. The outer city is flourishing but the core is still the same. when you enter indore you dont get a vibe of entering in to a grand city put it rather paints a grim picture of what you are getting in to.
But there is a ray of hope i saw this time. While entering the city i saw huge demolitions to make way for WIDER roads. i mean it seemed impossible back in the days but looks like this time the city admin got really geared up and demolished all those little shops and malls everything to make way for infrastructure.
Here is one pic of road widening. work is going on a huge scale and it looks like its gonna be awesome once the work is done.

i was in indore when Treasure Island came along and they used to employ a guy to stand next to the escalators to help people get on. so many of the people would go there to "take a ride" on 'em and there would be huge lines!
and not to mention ladies decked up in expensive jewellery and saris;men in suits having a meal at mcdonalds.

totally.
its a shame really. with the location it has, Indore has a big chance of becoming one of the big centers in the country if the state government does its bit and attracts investment.
They did start building an IT park there, with companies like infosys and wipro showing interest. any idea whats been going on with that, vishnu?

Illusionist January 29th, 2009, 01:29 AM Well next destination in my journey is mandsaur from where i did my undergrads. There are two ways to go to mandsaur , one via ujjain and second via ratlam. and sadly we went via ratlam which turned out to be our biggest mistake.
traveling between these two cities had never been easy. it takes grueling 6 hrs to travel 250 kms. for all the 6 hrs we barely met road for 50 kms. rest of it was just "nothing":ohno: . our poor sx 4 took a lot of beating. there was no freaking road. they dug up all the 200kms of road to make way for new 4lane highway without considering a second service road for people. i was so pissed after eating so much dust and dhakka mukkas. thank god i was not in the back seat of a bus.
where ever we found new patch of built highway it was smooth as "hema malini's cheeks". i was impressed with the short smooth rides but rest of it was just hell. they say that it will be finished by next year. by god i hope they do it.
anyways some how i got to mandsaur and visited my college MIT. it has changed a lot. from our 10 room college to now modern and well maintained center of education offering tons of courses. infact the whole city mandsaur has changed a lot too. i will cross post pics of my college from another thread .

Illusionist February 1st, 2009, 03:09 AM Well now i will continue my journey from Mandsaur (MP) to Jaipur. After driving on non existent roads between indore to mandsaur we got better roads for our further journey. Roads between mandsaur till chittor were okay but after that we got smooth NH. i saw lot of construction activity on my way to finish the rest of the highway till chittorgarh. hopefully in an year it will we an awesome trip.

Well this concludes this leg of my journey
barrykul February 1st, 2009, 10:19 PM Wonderfull photo essay, thanks!
I must say that the whole of India has caught onto the "itch" of 4-lane highways. Every state is investing Rs into such infrastructure. Wherever they dig up existing roads for the expansion, things are horrible, no proper lanes to guide traffic, gravel and dirt, errant drivers finessing every inch, lorries/buses causing potholes, rain playing havoc. Some surfaced areas without final finish are protected by stone barricades, thereby preventing further deterioration by truant drivers. Nevertheless, change is coming and I am glad to see the winds of progress. Within a few short years we should see good long distance road infrastructure everywhere and this should have an enormous multiplier effect on the economy.
Illusionist February 3rd, 2009, 12:35 AM You are right. you can see signs of changes and infra construction everywhere no matter where you go. Next step would be to develop a culture of maintenance. it has been our old habit of build and forget now it should be build and maintain.
May be this will give boost to surface transportation. If you look closely then you will realize that all indian trains are full and highways are empty. mostly you see buses and trucks on highways. once people get wealthier and road infra becomes reliable then may be it will ease the stress on trains and make commuting easier for everyone
Illusionist February 3rd, 2009, 10:29 AM Rajasthan govt does a good job showcasing rajasthani and Indian culture to people. They organize fairs all round the year so local artists from all over the country can bring their cultural things and sell it to tourists.
They have built fair grounds with sets of different kind of village architecture of rajasthan. One buy at the booth i talked to made 8 grand sale in the previous day. it is pretty good by indian standards.
i went to few such fairs to buy gifts for my friends. One of them was Tribal arts fair.

this is one of the art work of a Gangaur festival procession .
but guess what, in last month two of the guys are missing . :lol:some one stole brass gangaur participants to sell it for scrap. govt is gonna ask police dept to pay for it as they couldn't protect it.

Illusionist February 6th, 2009, 08:08 PM There are many malls coming up in Jaipur. Some are new and others are older shopping complexes and movie theaters converted in to shopping malls. Newer malls are on the outskirts with ample parking , and older malls in the city have horrible parking and mostly paid. Next feature are the malls of jaipur (few of them)
Illusionist February 6th, 2009, 08:11 PM Hypercity Mall
Hypercity mall is the newest and the best mall jaipur has. It is huge, just opened and has good parking. eventhough they have only few stores open now but soon rest of the shops will be occupied.

Thats my one day trip to few malls of Jaipur. I must say they are generally cheaper than mom and pop stores. Plus labor is so cheap that they have an employee at every isle. Will post other pics soon. ciao:cheers:
jodhpur February 6th, 2009, 10:55 PM hey u know the barrat u were mentioning... it is not a barrat it is actually depicting the religious procession of Gangaur... i think u might know this.... it's famous to Jaipur after all....nice pics by the way... i guess Jaipur is setting mark for other cities to follow...
mooktada February 6th, 2009, 11:58 PM wow.. you know I have this exterior is very classy and well done. great pictures. thank
barrykul February 7th, 2009, 12:11 AM Great pictures indrajal! Wow, Jaipur is looking much better than the piss poor infra of Bluru. We have broad streets relative clean, traffic adhering to lanes, the people in an upbeat mood. I now understand what it means to have 7% growth in GDP. Change has come everywhere which is heartening, especially to the Dessert area of Rajastan. Rajastan is looking good, maybe the efficient Govt is doing its bit. I hope the story is similar in many remote areas of India.
It would be ironic if all these places leaped ahead but the major metros lag behind. We see problems in major cities yet to be addressed - unclean streets, narrow roads, no sense of forward progress, hopeless traffic problems. Cities like Bluru, Mumbai, Kolkotta, Chennai, Hbad are seriously deteriorating everyday and those in charge seem to be sleeping.

Thanks barrykul. I guess importance for infrastructure is ingrained in people's mind set here since the city was designed by a french architect. Even the old part of city are wide and in geometrical shape. though they still are crazy crowded lol.
Jaipur development authority is very strict. Every colony has to be regularized by JDA and they have very strict norms. I have first hand experience with it, we bought a plot in a newly formed colony. but it was not legalized until JDA authorizes it. JDA requires 80ft roads and 120 ft roads after sa number of 80 fts roads, a park after so many blocks etc etc.
they took 20 ft away from our plot to make that street 120 ft. we were still happy becoz now it became business street. JDA allows shops only on streets wider than 100ft.
they were also first ones to abolish tempos from city and enforcing size of boards of shops and colors etc.
i must give credit to our CM 5 years ago who built so many flyovers. people critized him for not creating jobs but working on infrastructure . he said if we will have unemployed people on the streets then atleast they will have good streets to walk on. he is elected again and i am excited.

This kind of make shift tents are everywhere in jaipur. They are multi layered tents which keeps inside warm. It is called Rain-Basera. It is state govt's initiative to provide a place to sleep for homeless people. it gets very cold in jaipur and is very hard on homeless people. Inside i was told they have mattresses and stuff. no bathrooms etc though. It is free for any one but i was told that the cops who are on duty charge people 5 rs per slot. still a good deal. they will take it off once the winter is over.
