View Full Version : Pivo/Beer in Slovenija

Hi all.

I've been many times in Slovenija, but I still haven't found a definitive answer to my question:
do good beer-pubs exist in the country?

By "good" I mean with a broad selection of local and foreign beers. Quality beers such as the belgian dark ones and the anglosaxon stouts.

By "broad selection" I mean from 20 to 200 different bottles. These are not impossible numbers, if we consider that in Friuli we find at least two important beer-pubs: Gambrinus in Udine (with about 140 beers) and Bunker in Duino/Devin (about 70).

Udine has approximately 100,000 inhabitants, Duino a bit more than 1,000. Ljubljana has way more than 200,000 inhabitants.

So my question is: do such pubs exist in Slovenija? (expecially western and central, eastern is too far for me)

I would find strange that in Slovenija no beer-lovers exist, and that everybody goes fine with honest (but rather basic) beers such as Heineken, Union, Lasko, Corona or Tuborg.

Expecially because such beer-lovers are many in Friuli, which though has a strong winery tradition.

Thanks for attention and have a good day :)

Typical beer pubs, with beer only, no. But the are some pubs in Ljubljana where people usually come to drink a good beer.

-Guinness pub, Kratochwil, Pr skelet, Cutty Sark, Patrick's Irish pub,..

Surely there are many others but I prefer those. I just know for Ljubljana, not for western part.

how is Kratochwil? more or less choice than, for example, Cutty Sark?

hvala

There are 3 Kratochwills in Ljubljana. If you come to Ljubljana you should check Pr Skelet (At the Skeleton). It's very bizarre, with bones all around. Here's the web page:

Try Old London pub in Trzin's commercial-industrial zone(10km north of tomačevo rondo). They used to have plenty of UK and Irish beers, i hope they still do, because i haven't been there for some time.

Patrick's Pub, English Pub and Cantante. All in Maribor. They have several sorts of beer, but I cannot tell you the exact number.

Also Interspar has many sorts...

To me, Union has better taste because its less bitter, but its depends of a personal taste. The "beer war" between Laško and Union is mostly in function of regional belonging (Ljubljana versus Štajerska).

Otherwise, to answer Der Goerzer, couple of days ago I ve been to Patricks pub at Precna ulica (between Trubarjeva and Mala ulica) and I tried Franziskaner Weissbier -it is excellent, I strongly recomend it. In Patricks pub they have, as you put it, a "broad selection" of beer, I believe it should do for any beer drinker.

I agree, the pub with the biggest beer selection in Ljubljana is Patrick's Irish Pub at Prečna ulica. It carries 35+ bottles and 6 beers on tap - among them Human Fish Pale Ale, a very good Slovenian craft beer that you ought to try. Also the pub Pri Zelenem Zajcu at Rožna ulica has Human Fish Red Ale on tap that I still have to try... As for PirFest - finally something interesting in Slovenia regarding beer selection, but Ljubljana could really use some real beer places that are permanent.

dont forget about Kratochwill in BTC and in the center of Ljubljana at Kolodvorska street. but I hardly get drunk by drinking this beer  and as far as I know, there are a couple of private brewerys in Slovenia, but most of them (if not all) are outside Ljubljana... you can drink their beer only in those privat "gostilnah". cant remember non of them sadly

There used to be one in Maribor named Štajerc. They had their own beer, quite good! But really have no idea if it's open or not. And i hear for the first time for Human fish stuff! Where can i get that??

I don't think there's a place in Maribor that serves it. In Ljubljana in addition to Patrick's Irish Pub and Pri Zelenem Zajcu mentioned above, you can get it at Premier Pub on Petkovškovo nabrežje and sometimes at Cutty Sark Pub in Knafljev prehod. You can also try their three beers (pale ale, red ale, stout) at the brewery itself, which is in Slovenj Gradec (more info at their Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Slovenj-Gradec-Slovenia/The-HumanFish-Brewery/59622391020)

can't go wrong with Franziskaner or Oberdorfer  just don't let them throw in the lemon slice :D
we usually go to Tarantella in Gorizia for those - it has a neat collection of beers, plus the owner is sicilian and he also has a mean limoncello :)
