Béchar (Arabic: ولاية بشار) is a town in Algeria today, in the wilaya of Béchar it is the capital. The city is populated by the breakdown in 2005 of 251 657 inhabitants. It lies on the edge of the Sahara, and its former name is Colomb-Bechar.

Béchar is the largest city in Western Sahara and the administrative center of the Saoura. His rapid development is closely linked to the presence of the Algerian army, especially along the Moroccan border. Béchar is located 80 km from the Moroccan border, 1150 km from the capital Algiers, about 700 km from the sea and 852 km from Tindouf.

The town of Bechar covers an area of 5 050 km ².

The University of Béchar includes more than 13 specialties including technological Sciences, Law and Management not to mention Arabic letters.
