CULWULLA December 23rd, 2003, 06:18 AM exclusive pic of proposed Cross City tunnel stack for Darling Harbour. It rises 61m/200ft and will sit between flyovers behind Imax.
Theres some art work to go on sides and other issues but i think it looks ok "for an exhaust stack"!
Its a triangular shape being 15m long.

nsn December 23rd, 2003, 06:38 AM Perhaps they could coordinate it with the black and yellow check of the Imax theatre?!
I thought at one stage the plan was to "attach" this to a building, so as not to have a tall chimney stack like this all out on its own?
spazpecker December 23rd, 2003, 07:18 AM I can't believe I'm gonna say this but that's a bloody beautiful chimney stack !
I recall reading in the SMH a couple of weeks ago that there may be pressure from several inner city resident and commerical interest groups to make it upward of 80m which, given this design, would be super. Any more news on that Cul ?
walexx December 23rd, 2003, 08:25 AM It might look good, but god help anyone who has to live with the crap that will be coming out of it.
The government wants it to look good so that people will forget about how much they are being poisoned from it.
I live in Earlwood and am just a few hundred metres from the M5E stack and I am really starting to feel the effects of it.
My breathing is alot heavier and I caugh all the time for no reason. I have no doubt its the direct results of the unfiltered crap pouring out if it every day.
Admire the stack all you like guys, cause yeah, it is a great design, but it will have a very lethal bite.
hornetfig December 23rd, 2003, 08:56 AM That picture is a bit odd as the road viaduct is being 'adjusted' as part of the works so it won't be quite so close to the Harris Street exit as shown (the carriageway with the incorrect [more correctly out of date] "To MR5: Liverpool" gantry sign)

yeah, shes a beauty! there are some design issues and it could go to 80m which would make it a real feature. The nearby Sega world will be demolished within 3 years and replaced with 3-8 storey residential bldgs which is what debate is about! its with spitting distance from the stack and the new apartments would reach 40m high, not much lower than stack so this is why it should go to 80m. i wish they could filter the air too!
Fabian December 23rd, 2003, 12:47 PM Excellent design. It beats those M5 stacks by a long shot and makes for something nice to look at when looking at the distributor.
I also have to admit it looks like a huge scale model for a skyscraper.

Muse December 23rd, 2003, 03:22 PM The X City Tunnel stack is just like a modern Chinese city scraper in its design.
An (already constructed) M5 East stack for comparison...kinda architecturally nice:

Here's hoping it'll be a very different place in 2-3 years time.

Did it ever! I never went in there, and from what I understand that was the problem - there were too many people like me who just weren't interested enough to spend the huge amounts required for an "indoor" amusement park.
But thank God it did flop - especially if, as has been mentioned, it will be demolished in 2 - 3 years' time. The thing should never have been built. It is a monstrosity. The hideous cone thing just makes that part of Darling Harbour look like a temporary "World Expo"-style area. And then there's all the "theme" stores in the ground floor: the Rainforest Cafe, the One Sports Bar... haven't we got over theme stores yet?
This is the first I have heard that the building is being demolished. But it is great news. They should never have built over the sports facilities (tennis courts etc) that were there initially.
They can't knock it down soon enough for me.

One of the more interesting raves I had the pleasure of attending was in there one night... all ride operational. It was great fun running amoke all night inside Sega World.
As much as most of you hate that area... it is really what Sydney is all about... hedonism and tacky glitz, I for one will be sad to see it go... it added more dimension to the city and now the homies will have nowhere to hang other than george street cinema precinct. I hate anything that tries to make the city more gentele for god sake we aint living in europe we should be encouraging additional flavour in our cities not destroying it.
Now it will = less space for the younger generations to hang out and place added burden on other areas and into the burbs. Not everything should be about making money and private property... it is nice to have additional public space, even if it was themed and rather covered in concrete and blue glass :colgate:

http://www.smh.com.au/ffxImage/urlpicture_id_1072908852969_2004/01/01/stackdesign,0.jpg
A cunning plan to mask the cross-city tunnel exhaust stack as a fake 20-storey building has not fooled the City of Sydney. It wants to disguise it as a work of art.
The council has rejected the Roads and Transit Authority's sleek design for the stack - which is to send emissions from 90,000 cars skyward each day - and proposed a competition to find an artist or designer to advise the developers on its appearance.
In its report proposing the competition, the council cited the example of the Hyde Park obelisk on Elizabeth Street, which had deviously "civilised" a sewer vent and turned it into an iconic city marker.
The report says a sculptured stack would provide more "interest and beauty" than the submitted RTA design.
"The stack's form makes it difficult for it to disguise itself as a conventional building," it says.
"Rather than try to disguise it as a building, it is better to be honest and make a sculptural statement out of the stack."
In anticipation of a competition, the Herald asked two artists and a designer for their ideas. The results are at left.
The Lord Mayor's spokesman , Sasha Grebe, said the council was not proposing to change the stack's shape but wanted to find an artist or designer to paint it or turn it into a sculpture.
Under the RTA's plans, the stack will be 60 metres high and 20 metres wide and stand on a sliver of land between two criss-crossing wings of the Western Distributor near the Imax cinema at Darling Harbour.
An RTA spokesman said the current design was by urban designers employed by the RTA, and the authority would consider the council's plans for a competition.
A separate plan considered a stack of up to 80 metres high that could be partly concealed within an existing building.
Narelle Thirkettle, from Sydneysiders Against Polluting Stacks, said she had no objection to the building design but was concerned about the stack's impact on surrounding air quality.
"At that height it will be ugly nomatter what clothes it's dressed up in. I think the council should be more concerned about what air comes out of it is than what it looks like."
Ms Thirkettle said the RTA's design was based on wind conditions measured at Goat Island, which were different from those at Darling Harbour.
The RTA's spokesman said the stack was designed so a filtration system could be fitted if a commercially proven system became available. The stack and the tunnel are expected to be completed by the end of next year.
Richard Goodwin, another artist approached by the Herald to suggest a design, declined, saying: "To window dress such an item is not what is needed . . . If [the stack] were art, then the art bit would be an elaborate attachment which helps filter and clean the air . . . like a big lung. I just can't draw that at the moment."

Because it's such as high profile location !
This stack will be visible from just about every part of Darling Harbour and sorrounds. There's a great opportunity to go with a design which typifies the area and that's something striking with colour, eclecticism, dynamism and movement - something that definately isn't staid and 'corporate' looking which is probably what Cul's original render is in comparison ( it still looks good though ).
Avatar January 2nd, 2004, 11:10 AM I honestly thought that SMH article was a joke. You can't tell me its serious that is ludicrous. I am yet to see a better looking stack. Please what is that gaudy kistch parading as some symbolic icon of Aboriginal heritage. It looks akin to a major toll/ticket booth or canteen/kiosk you would expect to find at a footy/soccer match in some half baked small suburban oval at a saturday morning game for under 6 players and what do they sell boomerang shaped hotdogs???????????? Wow extremely highbrow this one. This should not be up to an artist at all... it should be open to a designer or an architect at the very least. Most artists have no idea of homogenous design or appropriate aesthetics... it's an insult to the entire population of Australia.

spazpecker January 2nd, 2004, 01:25 PM Your'e working beautifully Avatar ! :righton:
gazmo January 3rd, 2004, 12:05 AM We have to remember that this stack is going to serving an important function. I'm concerned that if it were to be warped into a work of art, it'll restrict the air flow and dispersal of the fumes, or prevent it from being fitted with a filtration system which it so important.
I'm an industrial chemist by qualification and you have no idea the crap that's in car and worse still truck exhaust.
Look at the M5 stack and the admission of a decline in health within the Arncliffe area because of it.
Would you like exhaust soot sprinkled on your meal while eating at Cockle Bay Wharf? That sounds far fetched, but if this stack's dispersal system isn't working right, then it's a possibility.

Fabian August 6th, 2004, 11:20 PM Bad news guys, it is likely to moved into an existing structure - most likely Darling Walk.
From The Sydney Morning Herald (smh.com.au)
Twin sites eyed for tunnel exhaust stack
By Alexandra Smith
August 7, 2004
The cross-city tunnel is so far ahead of schedule that its controversial exhaust stack will be built near Darling Harbour's IMAX theatre but is likely to be later moved to a site where it can be hidden in a building.
Government documents reveal that the Roads and Traffic Authority and the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority have not ruled out relocating the stack and are still searching for a new site.
The foreshore authority and the Darling Harbour Business Association want the stack masked in a building on Darling Walk, preferably the Sega World building, to protect the "commercial viability of the cafe strip".
But the tunnel project is so advanced that time has run out to change the stack's location, so it will be built as planned but possibly moved to appease the foreshore authority and the Darling Harbour businesses.
A delay to the project, which could be finished as early as May, would cost the Government $135 million, according to the documents, which were tabled in State Parliament after a motion by the Greens MP Sylvia Hale.
Advertisement Advertisement
"Notwithstanding . . . the RTA will continue liaison with the foreshore authority regarding future opportunities for relocating the stack within a building," a question time briefing note says.
The 60-metre free-standing stack was approved for the IMAX site in December despite Department of Health concerns that its height would not achieve "adequate pollutant dispersion".
An assessment by the department's public health division shows the stack would need to be 20 metres taller if pollutant levels were to be acceptable.
Based on this assessment, the department advised it would support the relocation of the stack to Darling Walk if it meant "overall pollution exposures are lowered".
But Ms Hale, the Greens planning spokeswoman, said a CSIRO expert had given independent advice that showed pollution would be worse if the stack was relocated and masked by a building.
"From what we have been told, pollutant levels at ground level would be worse because the plumes from the camouflaged stack could not be as well dispersed by cross winds," she said.
The cross-city tunnel, which is almost a year ahead of schedule, is one of several tunnel projects under construction.
Muse August 7th, 2004, 01:59 AM ^ That's quite interesting about the stack.
BTW I knew the construction of the Cross-City Tunnel was ahead of schedule but I didn't realise that it's ahead by almost a year.

Yeah, those flyovers around KENS do look better. I was there in the area last Saturday night and I must say it's looking good. More colour would be nice, but it's all sleek and silver for the moment. A move in the right direction I say and a good move too because of the increased human movement in that area and when KENS is complete many more people will be using the area around it.

I saw it from the Druitt Street viaduct yesterday. It looks good when the sun is on it (better than Cul's sort of dreary grey photo from the 23rd)
Trances January 13th, 2005, 03:17 PM getting taller each day now

gazmo January 14th, 2005, 11:51 AM Cool shots Muse. :okay:
I drove past it again and figure you must have been walking in no mans land for a couple of those shots.
CULWULLA January 14th, 2005, 12:02 PM great shots muse. looks about 50m, so another 10 or so to go.
how good would this look if it was a new 235m scraper downtown!!
zulu69 January 15th, 2005, 06:46 AM Damn great shots! I really should be checking this one out....
Yes it would make an insane scraper...maybe in place of telstra near WT?
BrizzyChris January 15th, 2005, 10:42 AM Now that is a cool chimney!
Adelarch January 15th, 2005, 11:11 AM hey that's ubercool! :)
kind of the chimney version of the flatiron
http://data.greatbuildings.com/gbc/images/cid_1101917214_Flatiron_1.jpg
Gargarensis January 15th, 2005, 01:50 PM i was wondering what the hell that was when I was in DB yesterday. who'd have ever imagined that a chimney could actually look good.
rob_ January 15th, 2005, 10:44 PM dam, i was hoping for the hot dog thing
Muse January 15th, 2005, 11:59 PM ^ LOL @ those other wacky designs.
Cool shots Muse. :okay:
I drove past it again and figure you must have been walking in no mans land for a couple of those shots.
You're not wrong. Almost got run over for the last shot.
I was thinking the same Adelarch when walking around it.
It is a sleek piece that's lookin' good. Can't believe it has another 10m to go!!
...
Avatar January 16th, 2005, 11:11 AM has anyone felt the draft the flatiron building creates? These wedge shapes are notorious for it - i wonder if the chimney will have the same effect.
CULWULLA January 16th, 2005, 10:36 PM ^ i think its too small to have an effect. Its wedged between to flyovers and really doesnt impact at all at ground level.
fro January 16th, 2005, 10:47 PM cool.. this one's going up fast. while I love the shape maybe some additional colour wouldn't have gone astray?
CULWULLA January 17th, 2005, 04:55 AM looks like they reversed the lines on the facade

Blue_Copper January 17th, 2005, 07:35 AM :deadthrea
gazmo January 17th, 2005, 11:02 AM HA! I was going to comment how close to the render this stack was turning out to be - thankfully I didn't rely on my memory because you've made an interesting observation (and I would have looked a goose).
looks like they reversed the lines on the facade
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v158/culwulla/xcitytunnelstack.jpg
CULWULLA January 17th, 2005, 11:26 AM i think it looks better the way it is being built. i wonder if the rim will go onto.?
Avatar January 17th, 2005, 11:31 AM ^ i think its too small to have an effect. Its wedged between to flyovers and really doesnt impact at all at ground level.
Yup I had a look at it the base is a real mess atm but with the flyovers and the size of it it would be unlikely to create any draft effect rather than what comes out the top :colgate:
It would indeed look awesome as a skyscraper in the city, thin, triangular and pure metalised glass walls in silver.
Muse January 17th, 2005, 11:58 AM cool.. this one's going up fast. while I love the shape maybe some additional colour wouldn't have gone astray?Besides my recent pic posts, have you seen it in the flesh yet fro? or just remembering those odd alternative designs that were in the SMH earlier this year?
Looks like they reversed the lines on the facade
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v158/culwulla/xcitytunnelstack.jpg
Yeah, looks like they definitely have.
:deadthrea
Whether you're joking or not, this thread is definitely not dead. It has another approx. 10m to go.
CULWULLA January 18th, 2005, 03:45 AM wow, last sections went on and even rim is done! looks excellent!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v158/culwulla/stackcloseup.jpg
Australia;s tallest tunnel vent stack!
61m/200ft
63m to rim
66m to rod
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v158/culwulla/stackjan18.jpg
Adelarch January 18th, 2005, 03:47 AM awesome
the rim even looks like the rim on the flatiron lol
thanks for the pics :)
zulu69 January 18th, 2005, 06:22 AM wow that was quick! It looks great, i want that area underneath and surrounding will be cleaned up soon its been messy for years now.
gazmo January 18th, 2005, 09:31 AM Well your question was answered rather quickly wasn't it?
Oh to the joys of prefrabrication!
i think it looks better the way it is being built. i wonder if the rim will go onto.?
Muse January 18th, 2005, 09:33 AM OMG I only took the other pics last week.
Now all we have to wait for is the XCity Tunnel to open this year (if it's on schedule)
Wonder what the tourists that visit Sydney who only stay for 3 or 4 nights will wonder what it is....lol
Blue_Copper January 19th, 2005, 03:48 AM cull is there a possability of large "Times Square style" screens on it? cause its in prime exposer for traffic!
CULWULLA January 19th, 2005, 04:38 AM im not sure about adverstising rights. but look at nearby IMAx.
might spoil it.
hornetfig January 19th, 2005, 05:41 AM It's not actually that easy to see from a vehicles - coming from the NE (Harbour Bridge/Market Street) you're under Darling Park and very low to the ground. Coming from the E (Druitt Street) you get a bit of a view of it passing on your left. Coming from the W (Anzac Bridge) the shape of it means you only see the large sides once you're past it.
The photos Cul has taken are from Bathurst Street which is one way coming up the hill so no aspect there. Coming from the S (Harbour Street) can't see it for Darling Park
The best view would be from the Pier Street bridge or pedetrians in Darling Harbour near Tumbalong Park...
But why deface it with ads?
Muse January 19th, 2005, 10:58 AM But why deface it with ads?Exactly!! The Imax Theatre is doing well and enough in that department.
Leave the stack all high-tech, clean, glossy and spiffy.
The "Times Square style" stuff is for William Street and The Cross. A bit more on Central Square wouldn't go astray either.
zulu69 January 19th, 2005, 12:44 PM ^ hopefully we can add World Square also to our 'time square ripoff list™'.
Blue_Copper January 19th, 2005, 12:55 PM lol i dont want it either i just wanted to get an idea of if they would and the size
fro January 20th, 2005, 03:47 AM No Muse, I haven't seen it in person yet... I was in the city a few weeks back but I think it hadn't gone up that far yet. I will definitely try to get a look at it in the upcoming weeks, it really looks quite remarkable!
gazmo January 20th, 2005, 07:56 AM One different I have noted between the render and the real thing - the rim and spike are black while the render looks like there're silver.
fro January 20th, 2005, 09:27 PM Good spot.
With all the talk of the flatiron building I stumbled across one on flickr. (http://flickr.com/photos/limonada/3474595/)
gazmo January 20th, 2005, 09:33 PM Nice link Fro!
fro January 21st, 2005, 04:01 AM Nice link Fro!
Yeah, flickr's awesome!! Get onto it!
CULWULLA January 21st, 2005, 04:15 AM sorry guys. its that time of the thread were we say bye bye and send to archives. :hi:
a job well done i say!
:cucumber: :righton:
Fabian January 21st, 2005, 11:42 AM Looks awesome from Sydney Tower.
& Check out the motorists slowing down to admire Sydney's newest attraction!!!
http://img34.exs.cx/img34/7717/fabiansphotos553small0xi.jpg
MrTall January 21st, 2005, 02:14 PM WOW! Awesome shot Fab. Certainly has a bit of meat to it doesn't it.
Is that viaduct on the left new or just re-surfaced? I love Sydney's spaghetti network around this area!
gazmo January 21st, 2005, 10:34 PM An extra left lane as been added and the resurface has occurred very recently. The new lane isn't open yet, but part of the construction of it involved closing what was then the left lane - to 3 lanes became 2. Same thing happened on the viaduct on the right, 4 lanes has become 1 + Bus Lane.
The traffic isn't so much slowing for a look at the stack, but because the 2 west-bound lanes have been reduced to 1 lane with the top hats -the RTA was painting the road marking yesterday.
CULWULLA January 24th, 2005, 03:46 AM excellent pic fab!
today from waldorf.
