[QUOTE=iloilocitykid;33549264]Bulabog Putian National Park - Iloilo’s Protected Natural Reserve

The caves of Bulabog Putian National Park is an important historical, paleontological, archeological site since it was used as a hideout by the revolutionary forces in Iloilo during the Spanish occupational period. Many of the caves’ walls still has text inscribed by the war heroes of the past. One of these text reads: “Los Republicanos Juran Morir Antes Que Entregarse,” or The Republicans Swear To die Before Surrendering.

after a long exchange of thoughts the bottom line of your argument is still more of the same. I have to decipher my earlier statements for the benefit of comprehension to the less comprehended....again.

1st...
i don't refute your earlier scientific contentions about our environment but i gave you an objective historical explanation. is the past of our doing? and is my mind set back to the 16th century for citing the historicity of the state of our environment?

2nd...
have you been to brazil?
fact: brazil experiences fast deforestation rate (http://news.mongabay.com/2005/0603-bloomberg.html).

3rd...
to say that only a small portion of cebu is urban enclave and the rest *sic* "are ghost towns" is by itself a counterproductive anti-cebu false rhetoric, but let's be generous and have your rule of thumb. as cebu is without doubt, the most progressive and economically viable province in the Philippines, yet at the same time, by your qualifications...is a conglomerate of ghost towns, what do u make of the other provinces then?

again, save your preaching, your replies have been more of the same rhetoric with an ever increasing use of ad hominems such as claming that we're in "denial". to which i say is unjustified and undermines the intelligence of the cebuanos. cebu is not the wretched of the earth, we know what where doing. and where doing more than better. never chew more than you can swallow.

even though matagal nato pero naiinis ako. just want to share though.

based from what that forumer said, parang for him, wala ng pag-asa ang cebu na parang gusto nya makita ang cebu na walang wala in the future! and when that time comes, parang gusto rin nya na walang tutulong sa cebu! OMG! my goodness! :omg:

kahit wala ng old growth forest ang cebu is at least may ginagawa ang mga cebuanos para pigilan ang pagkasira pa lalo ng kalikasan nito. and for others to know, may forest sa cebu and cebuanos wants to plant more.

and being a major trading port in this part of the archipelago, mas kabisado ng mga cebuanos ang trade and commerce kaysa ang magsaka sa bukid knowing na ang lupain ng cebu is not arable and unproductive due to its mountainous terrain. kaya imbis isisi sa panginoon na bakit hindi likas na mayaman ang cebu sa lupain, eh ang ginawa ng mga cebuanos, naghanap sila ng ibang ikabubuhay upang sa gayon hindi magutom, and that's why cebuanos are known entrepreneurs in the philippines then and now.

Many years ago we used to trek along the boundaries of Mt. Apo National Park in Mt. Talomo area to enjoy the sceneries and visit some waterfalls but years later there were new settlers and they actually burned some areas in the trail that used to be covered with forest. then when we checked our group's previous tree planting site hundreds of feet more of uphill climb (nakakapagod yun, pero in the summit tanggal pagod mo) sinunog din yung itinanim ng mga culprits, eh supposedly national park na ang mga areas na yun.

No excuses kasalanan talaga nila and I made moves about it kaya ayun, it was later heard iba daw sa kanila dinakip.

3-day trek to NNNP kicks off

About 25 trekkers started yesterday their journey in the forests of the Northern Negros Natural Park in Don Salvador Benedicto, Negros Occidental, as part of a yearly event, "Panikang-tikang," a Green Alert Negros press release said.

It will end tomorrow with a courtesy call with DSB Mayor Marxlene de la Cruz. The local government unit collaborated with Green Alert in this event.

The first day featured a dialog with community members in Barangay Kumaliskis, DSB, on various issues and concerns in the forest.

The group then trekked to the Santuario de Cayambe for the first camp. A tree-planting activity as a symbol of commitment to preserve and restore the northern Negros forest will be held in Santuario de Cayambe today.

Station head Alex Ligayo of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-DSB will give inputs about NNNP and its issues. The trekkers will then visit the famous Balatan-og Falls, and second camp in the nursery area, the press release said.

Cultural presentations will held in the second night and discussions on the Panikang-tikang Declaration will follow.

The Declaration will focus on conservation initiatives, the illegal structure and creation of a Park Area Management Board for the Northern Negros Natural Park, the press release said.

It will be presented to Mayor de la Cruz, Gov. Isidro Zayco, the Provincial Environment and Management Office, DENR and other agencies.

On the "Earth Day", the trekkers will then proceed at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City for highlights organized by Green Alert Negros and the Save Mt. Kanlaon Coalition, the press release also said.*

Species never known found in NNNP
BY CARLA GOMEZ

A team of environmentalists from the United Kingdom and the Philippines who conducted a two-week biological expedition into the interior of the North Negros Natural Park are excited about their finds, which they have never seen before in other rainforests of the world.

Expedition leader James Sawyer said yesterday that their finds can make Filipinos proud that a globally important area is right at their doorstep.

Sawyer is a veteran of many similar expeditions to 25 countries including five years managing the Negros Rainforest Conservation Project.

The team found numerous plants and frog species never seen before, and droppings and palm trees very recently eaten by the Visayan spotted deer that proves that area has critical biological worth, Sawyer said.

The presence of the Visayan spotted deer is an important find as it is the rarest deer in the world, he pointed out.

There has been no evidence of the Visayan spotted deer being alive in the wild for 10 years, he said.

“We believe there are two distinct populations of the spotted deer in the NNNP interior and we only covered about one percent, which is great news,” Sawyer said.

“We brought droppings of the deer back with us for the Negros Forests and Ecological Foundation Inc. and Silliman University to analyze to learn more about their diets to help those in captivity,” he said.

NFEFI based in Bacolod City and SU in Dumaguete City have been breeding the Visayan spotted deer in captivity.

In addition we believe that we have found new species of frogs but a full report of the expedition will be made after analysis of our finds, Sawyer said.

“Although it (the NNNP) may not be the biggest patch of forest it is one of the most important pieces of forest anywhere in the world,” Sawyer said.

The current size of the park is 80,454 hectares with only 16,487 hectares of forest remaining.

Dr. Craig Turner, an environmental management expert, said he and Sawyer have worked in tropical rainforests all over the world and have never seen anything quite like what they saw in the NNNP interior, it is “very exciting”.

“This is definitely a unique environment, the centre of this park in the most pristine rainforest that we have seen anywhere in the world,” he said.

On the expedition, Sawyer said, were six British, one Irish and five Filipino members.

It took the expedition five days to get to the interior of the park, after long hard trekking, he said.

“The geography of interior is very steep and in a way that’s what protects the area,” he added.

“We found a cloud forest, a very different type of rainforest, with much greater diversity of plant and animal life. There were lots of very strange looking insects and frogs. A lot of the amphibians we found we could not identify using the standards species guides, which means we need to go to specialists and show them the photos we took and see what they think,” he said.

“Our feeling is there are lots of new species in the interior, which makes it a critically important area to protect,” he said.

The expedition was partnered by the NFEFI that undertook biodiversity surveys between 1999 and 2006 with Coral Cay Conversation in parts of the NNNP covering Talisay, Murcia and Silay – all part of the watershed of Bacolod City.

Sawyer lauded NFEFI work at protecting the NNNP despite limited funds.

To prove that the rare species they saw exists, specimens have to be taken out of the forest that they have not done yet because their two week expedition was only to conduct a rapid biodiversity assessment, he said

They would like to go back in 18 to 24 months with more scientists to prove that there are new species in the NNNP, Sawyer added.

“Much work has to be done, we see our initial findings as a start,” he added.

Sawyer said it is important to credit the Filipino members of their team because, without them, the expedition would not have succeeded.*CPG

^^ i guess it's the camera setting :colgate: but the lake really exist not photshopped hehe the trail & the lake was named or renamed MACADAC(Mt. Apo Mountain Climbers Association of Davao City) for their effort of replanting trees, protecting & keeping Mt. Apo clean. :)

here's another shot of Lake Macadac...

Macadac Lake

efforts of the mountaineers came into fruition, replanted trees are now 10-20 years old...

http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/1738/309501832328745c0136biz1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Naalala ko nuon, it's like watching a miracle yung panahong nasunugan ang rainforest ng Mt. Apo the mountain behaved like a sentient being. Ilang buwan it always hid and covered itself with clouds, it turned out it's the mountain's way of healing itself, para siguro madiligan ang mga seedlings. When the Mountain gradually healed nagpakita uli ang peak for everyone to admire.

It is not surprising that the indigenous peoples had always considered Mt. Apo as sacred place, except those that did not respect it and litter trash in the area or vandalize, or in any natural treasures.

The NNNP cloud forest discovered by the expeditioners *

‘NNNP find makes us proud’
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Negros Occidental Gov. Isidro Zayco yesterday said he is very happy with the recent discovery by environmentalists from the United Kingdom and the Philippines of numerous plants and frog species never seen before in the North Negros Natural Park.

It makes us very proud that Negros Occidental is host to such rare finds, and we laud all those who have worked to preserve the reserve, he said.

He said the North Negros Forest Reserve Council is tasked with overseeing the protection of the 80,454-hectare park.

The Negros Forests and Ecological Foundation Inc. has also actively been involved in protection and preservation work in the area.

ALASTAIR S. ROBINSON et al has discovered a new highland species from the Phillippines. They have named it after Sir David Attenborough, who is incidentally, one of my favourite TV icon and naturalist. Needless to say , N. attenboroughii is rare and highly endangered, and probably even more so now that its habitat has been published ....

UNESCO to declare
a World Heritage Site
Mindanao Daily Mirror
May 21, 2009

SAN ISIDRO, Davao Oriental – Mount Hami-guitan, located within the boundaries of Mati, Governor Generoso, and this town, will soon be declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (Unesco).

In a recent meeting of the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) here, the local governments of Mati and Governor Generoso were urged to fast-track the passage of their respective trekking and conservation ordinances for their respective jurisdiction to be included and be harmonized into one Comprehensive Management Plan, part of the requirements needed by Unesco as basis for the declaration.

Another requirement needed by Unesco is the establishment of the Management Center of PAMB and the Protected Area Supervisory Unit (PASU) Office that were already provided by Mayor Apolinar Ruelo Sr. of this town.

Mt. Hamiguitan and its vicinities was declared a protected area under the category of wildlife sanctuary and its peripheral areas as buffer zone by virtue of Republic Act 9303 on July 30, 2004.

It is a sanctuary of endemism of outstanding universal value and is the only protected forest noted for its unique bonsai field or “pygmy” forest of 100-year old trees in an ultramafic soil.

The whole Mt. Hami-guitan Range covers an area of about 31,000 hectares.

Governor Corazon Malanyaon wants the undeclared 10,000 hectares, a portion of the 31,000-hectare Mt. Hamiguitan Range, to be included in the protected area.

Mt. Hamiguitan is part of the reason the Philippines ranks seventh among the 17 biological rich countries of the world and represents the fast disappearing habitats of globally important species of plants and animals.

Board member Justina Yu of the second district of Davao Oriental said Mt. Hamiguitan also serves as protector of Davao City and the Island Garden City of Samal against strong winds, typhoons, and tidal waves. sarx lanos/ipid news

SILLIMAN ZOO is a mini forest and the home of the Center of Tropical Preservation (Centrop). This forest serves as a captive breeding ground for some of the country's endangered and endemic species like the Visayan Spotted Deer, Philippine Brown Deer, Philippine Crocodile, Visayan Tarictic Hornbill, Negros Bleeding Heart Pigeon, Reticulated Pigeon, Visayan Warty Pig, Long Tailed Macaque, and Flying Fox (giant fruit bats).

For years now, it has been making conservation efforts for the survival of these species. Some of the offsprings from these captive breedings were distributed to different partner zoos around the world for a greater chance of their survival while some were released back to the wild.

This mini forest is also made up of a collection of different species of trees around the country.

One of the most threatened deer species in the world. Now extinct in the islands of Cebu, Guimaras, and Masbate and found only in the remaining forest patches of Negros and Panay islands.

They are herbivores feeding on flowers, berries, grasses, and fruits. Males are differentiated from females by their horns called "antlers".

Conservation Status: ENDANGERED

looks small in the picture but actual size could be from 7 to 10 feet long

The Philippine crocodile is one of the most severely threatened species of crocodiles. The species persist as isolated individuals and small populations in Mindanao, Negros and Mindoro. Confirmed sites include Nabuntaran, Calarian Lake, Macasendy marsh, Liguasan marsh (Mindanao) and the Pagatban river (Negros). Current wild population size may be no more than 100 non-hatchlings.

The Visayan warty pig is a little-known, small, forest-dwelling pig that has only recently been recognised as a separate species. Historically found throughout the Visayan Islands, this species is now extinct over at least 98% of its former range, with the few surviving populations confined to fragments of remaining habitat on the islands of Negros and Panay.

VISAYAN TARICTIC HORNBILL

One of the smaller Philippine hornbills found only on the remaining patches of Negros and Panay islands.

They are omnivores, feeding on fruits, insects, and smaller mammals. They are important pollinators and seeds dispensers, which is a vital role in forest regeneration.

Conservation Status: ENDANGERED

NEGROS BLEEDING HEART PIGEON

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2072/2091385428_4a1315d5bf.jpg?v=0

This endemic bird species can be found in lowland dipterocarp and primary forest areas.

It is distinguishable from other bleeding heart pigeons by its elongated red streak.

Its wild populations are limited to the remaining forest fragments of Negros and Panay. With these continuining habitat loss on these islands, the Negros bleeding heart pigeon is now critically endagered.

It is the longest of the python snakes, with lengths up to 33 feet!

It is the most widespread python species in the world. However, its wild population is heavily threatened by the illegal wildlife trade of its skin, blood, and gall bladder which are used in traditional medicine practices.

These animals are usually killed when encountered by humans.

These primates are found in primary, secondary, coastal, mangroves, swamps, and forest in Southern Indochina, Burma, Indonesia, Philippines, and India's Nicobar Islands. Because monkeys are naturally tolerant with humans, they may also be found near villages.

Although not endangered, wild populations are severely threatened by habitat loss and illegal pet trade.

Monfort Bat Sanctuary:World’s Largest Colony of Fruit Bats

After several visits to the Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS), I discovered a new place worthy to take a look-the Monfort Bat Sanctuary. I have heard stories about bats in Samal but who cares about them anyway? Who haven’t seen a bat? We all know and see them in movies, magazines, and occasionally see them flying at night.

My discovery about this place happened when Mrs. Norma Monfort, the owner of the Monfort Conservation Park asked the Philippine Women’s College-Fine Arts Department to partner with them in their upcoming exhibit at the SM entertainment Center this April 27-30.

After a 3-day jaunt at the Talicud Island (one of the islands in Samal) we decided to visit the nearby Babak Island to see Mrs. Monfort’s Bat Sanctuary. At the back of my mind, I thought of little cave and a number of bats but my jaw dropped when I saw a multitude of nocturnal creepy creatures hanging on the walls of the cave. I haven’t seen such a massive number of bats before! According to a scientific study conducted by Bat Conservation International based in Austin, Texas, USA, Mrs. Monfort’s Cave is home to world’s largest colony of Geoffrey’s Rousette (Rousettus Amplexicaudatus) commonly known as fruit bats. They are estimated to be around 1.8 to 2.5 million!

The Island Garden City of Samal is known for its beautiful beaches, diving spots, amiable people, and to add in the list-the amazing Monfort’s Bat Sanctuary. If you have a chance to go to Samal, don’t leave the Island without visiting the place. It’s worth the trip.

FAQ

1. What time the Davao Crocodile Park Open?
We open everyday, Monday to Sunday at 8:00 AM

2. What time the shows start?
The show start at 4:45 PM.

3. How to get there?
You can ride a taxi from downtown, it is a 10-minute ride from the city. Also you can ride the Air-condioned AllAboard Jeep from Airport to Davao Crocodile Park.

4. Why does a crocodile opens its mouth?
Alligators and crocodiles gape as a means to lower body temperature without going back into the water. They cannot stick out their tongues and pant like a dog, so they sit with their mouth propped open and it has the same effect.

Their mouth drying out from this is merely an effect of evaporation being used to cool themselves. This may aid in loosening any leeches or other parasites in their mouth, but is not the main reason.

Also, most prey items are smart enough to avoid a crocodilian with it's mouth open.

A study was conducted by the University of Florida a few years back. They made a hydraulic bitemeter and took it to the St. Augustine Alligator farm. What they found out, was that an average adult alligator giving a simple "get away from me" type bite, closes it's jaws at 2000 psi. When used on one of their largest alligators that they had really ticked off, the bitemeter broke. It was built to withstand up to 5000 psi.

MOUNTAIN
Visit And Captivate At The Idyllic Oriental Negros

"Take Nothing but Pictures.
Leave Nothing but Footprints.
Kill Nothing but Time."

MT. TALINIS
Valencia, Negros Oriental

Mount Talinis, also known as the Cuernos de Negros (Horns of Negros), is a mountain in the Philippine province of Negros Oriental. At about 5905 feet above sea level, it is the second highest mountain in Negros Oriental after Mt Kanla-on.

This mountain is rich in biodiversity with the abundance of flora and fauna. It is filled with a variety of bodies of water like lakes, rivers, and waterfalls and forms of land masses like ridges, gorges, steeps, and platteau. Also present is a sulfur vent. The mountain can also be called Land of the Twins as the topography itself looks like two horns, with twin lakes and twin falls.

The Twin Falls are located near the apex of Mt. Talinis. It is the best kept secret of the mountain as it is unspoiled with very few travelers ever set foot at its waters. Only the circle of mountaineers and a few outsiders knew of its existence. Two tall waterfalls magnificently facing at each other while its backdrop are lush vegetation and canopies of trees. The joy is not only on being able to dip and bathe on its cold waters but also the adventure in conquering its terrain as one has to pass though the forest, cross a number of rivers, stroll at the twin lakes, drink real spring water straight from a rock if thirsty, sightseeing of various flora and fauna, and experience a rigorous uphill climb to reach the destination.

No doubt, that it is a favorite place for mountain lovers.

Philippine Eagle locally known as Haribon or Haring Ibon (Bird King) is considered the largest eagle in the world. But these birds are nearing its extinction because of the massive exploitation of our forests.

PIA Press Release
2009/08/15

Sustainable forest management lessens ecological disasters

Davao City (15 August) -- Amid wanton destruction of Philippine forests, described as the most rapid and most massive in the world, various NGOs and environmentalists see sustainable forest management a crucial undertaking as we face the global threats of climate change.

Authorities say that the never-ending denudation of already limited forest cover results to ecological and economic disasters. According to a Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) report, at least 163,000 hectares of forest is lost every year. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) lists, "some 38 areas nationwide are prone to frequent landslides and flooding, most of which are located in the heavily denuded forest areas."

While efforts have been started since the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, much needs to be realized. The once lush Philippine forest cover estimated at 21 million hectares in 1990 or 70% of the country's total land area was reduced to a measly 800,000 hectares or 18% after a decade. By 2010, Philippine forest cover is projected to be reduced to an upsetting 266,666 hectares or six percent (6%).

Meanwhile, House Bill 137 titled "An Act Instituting a Self-Sustaining Forest Management Program, by Providing Incentives to Tree Planters on Private Lands, Forest Lands, and other Public Lands and for Other Purposes or the "Tree for Legacy Act of 2007" filed by Aurora Rep. Juan Edgardo Angara empowers the citizenry in sharing with the national government and local government units the responsibility in the management and maintenance of ecological balance within their community.

The bill explains that "there is no single solution to all the ecological and economic disasters but the "Tree for Legacy Act" as a Forest Management Program is certainly one of them". The bill's objectives are consistent with Executive Order 263 and 318 in promoting community-based approaches in attaining sustainable forest management in the country. The bill encourages tree plantation development from both private and public lands, which is very important in integrated watershed management.

Ramon San Pascual, Executive Director of the Philippine Legislators' Committee on Population and Development Foundation, Inc. (PLCPD) said, "once enacted, this bill will provide the mechanisms in ensuring sustainable forest management that will consequently contribute in reducing ecological and economic threats posed by climate change." Visit And Captivate At The Idyllic Oriental Negros

MT. KANLAON
Canlaon City, Negros Oriental

Mt. Kanlaon is actually shared by the 2 provinces of Negros; Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental. It is an active volcano and the tallest in the entire Visayas. It has an elevation of 2,435 meters and a base diameter of 30 km and is dotted with pyroclastic cones and craters. The summit of Kanlaon contains a broad elongated northern caldera with a crater lake. A smaller but more active crater lies in the south.

The volcano has three hot springs on its slopes: Mambucal Hot Springs on the northwest, Bucalan Hot Spring, Bungol Hot Spring. Its adjacent volcanic edifices are Mt. Silay and Mt. Mandalagan, north of Kanlaon. Canlaon City now stands beside the mountain.

Evolving for over a million years, the wilderness of Mt. Kanla-on contains a delicate ecosystem containing plants and animals living in harmony. The beauty of the mountain’s natural environment- with exotic flora and fauna, awesome geologic and other natural features of great interest, have been widely noted for their scientific, educational, and recreational importance, as well as its historical, cultural, artistic and aesthetic values. For these attributes, Mt. Kanlaon has been found and identified to possess all the necessary pre-requisites required for its status to be considered and declared as a National Park on August 8, 1934.

For a more enlightening park experience, an unhurried quiet walk lets the visitor sense the unique environment. Travelling slowly through the dense forest, one will discover each area somewhat different from the other; various kinds of unique plantlife, from the enigmatic strangler fig to delicate orchids and the ferns and epiphytes of the mossy forest. Wildlife sounds abound beneath the triple-canopy forest and if your group is quiet and observant, a number of these animals can be seen. Mt. Kanla-on National Park is the home of many species of birds including the endemic hornbill, colorful parakeets, and even migratory birds from northern Asia. The huge but harmless monitor lizards scramble over fallen logs and Draco the "flying" lizard might glide overhead. Although there are several harmless species of snakes which are rarely encountered, avoid handling any because the poisonous cobras make their home here too.

At the ridge top, panoramic scenes of sheer rock walls and cliffs with the lush cover of the dwarf forest, clash with the Margaha Valley's cogon grass and shrub-covered floor. Mornings come late and the evenings early in the Valley. Pastel patches of greens, yellows, olives, ochres and tans from agricultural lands below are suddenly cut by the deep blue sea with cloud formations hugging the curve of the horizon.

The phenomenal clouds over Makawiwili Peak are illustrative of the complex balance of Nature's forces Man has started to respect.

wala palang lake crater ang Kanlaon no?

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj75/abudominic/kanlaon1996.jpg

Wala po kasi it erupts almost in regular intervals (every year to every 2-3-4 years) since 1985. water that collects in its active crater comes in contact with the hot rocks beneath and produces spectacular ash explosions (killed 3 mountain climbers in Aug 10, 1996 from falling boulders). Pooof! water just evaporates. the extinct Margaha Crater Valley collects water during rainy season creating a temporary lagoon and dries up in summer.

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj75/abudominic/kanlaon2003.jpg

In case a crater lake would form at Kanlaon's crater, it would be a ticking bomb to much explosive eruptions. More water comes in contact with hot rocks create a greater and violent ash explosions...termed "phreatic explosions".

Before everything is paved over by asphalt and badly designed roads and buildings I would to share with you some photos of wildlife/birds found in the Philippines.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4015/4471987565_fa01abf790_b.jpg

The Philippine Trogon (Harpactes ardens) is a species of bird in the Trogonidae family. It is endemic to the Philippines.

Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippine_Trogon

I hope others can share photos of animals found here in the Philippines.

Wow, nice farm.....:)

Next to CWC, Caramoan and Naga City, the Deer Farm located at the foot of Mt. Isarog, is CamSur's top tourist destination.

Just like the CWC, it is owned a operated by the CamSur Capitol.

The Monfort Conservation Park, or MCPark, is a 24 hectare property privately owned by the Monfort Family of Davao City. Upon completion, MCPark will be a tranquil eco/educational-resort.

It is here where you will find the 5 bat caves that make up the Bat Sanctuary. The Monfort family has kindly donated space for the Bat Research and Conservation Center, in efforts to further understand bats and their importance to the ecosystem.

The Philippine Eagle Centre is home to 36 Philippine Eagles, 18 of which are captive-bred. It also houses 10 other species of birds, 4 species of mammals and 2 species of reptiles. Simulating a tropical rain forest environment, the Center offers the visitor a glimpse into the country’s forest ecosystem. Although the exhibits are used primarily to help educate the Filipino people on conservation, the facility is also considered a major tourist attraction in Davao City.

nflatable Shark Among 300 New Species Discovered in Philippines (http://sg.news.yahoo.com/inflatable-shark-among-300-species-discovered-philippines-135007930.html)
LiveScience.comBy Charles Q. Choi, LiveScience Contributor
LiveScience.com | LiveScience.com – Tue, Jun 28, 2011

A treasure trove of hundreds of new species may have been discovered in the Philippines, including a bizarre sea star that feeds exclusively on sunken driftwood and a deep-sea, shrimp-eating shark that swells up to scare off other predators.

Scientists braved leeches and a host of venomous creatures from the mountains to the sea to uncover more than 300 species that are likely new to science. These findings include dozens of new insects and spiders, more than 50 colorful new sea slugs and a number of deep-sea armored corals "which protect themselves against predatory nibbles from fish by growing large, spiky plates," said researcher Terrence Gosliner, dean of science and research collections at the California Academy of Sciences and leader of the 2011 Philippine Biodiversity Expedition.

Researchers at the California Academy of Sciences and their colleagues from the University of the Philippines and the National Museum of the Philippines conducted a 42-day expedition this past spring to survey Luzon Island, the largest island in the Philippine archipelago, as well as its surrounding waters. [Image Gallery: Colorful Creatures of the Philippines]

Challenging field work

Working in the field is always a challenge, Gosliner noted. "We had our work both on the coral reefs and rain forest interrupted by an early typhoon; we were out of the water for two days," he said.

"One of the biologists working in the mountains was sleeping in a hammock; during the night, one of the trees his hammock was tied to was uprooted and he was suddenly on the ground," Gosliner added. "One researcher knelt on a venomous lionfish and later found himself on a mountain kneeling on poisonous plants."

The hard-won result of their efforts was the most comprehensive scientific survey effort ever conducted in the Philippines.

"I have been working in the Philippines on my own research for 20 years — I thought it would be great to bring a large team of researchers together to study from mountaintops to the deep sea, to determine if all of these places harbor new species," Gosliner said. "I was delighted that my hunch proved to be correct."

Their novel discoveries include a cicada that makes a distinctive "laughing" call, a crab whose pincers are lined with needlelike teeth, and a wormlike pipefish that hides among colonies of soft coral. In addition, they discovered a possible new species of swell shark — a shark that pumps water into its stomach to puff up — which unlike its relatives possesses a very distinctive camouflaged color pattern.

A number of species live in places rarely, if ever, visited by people, such as a primitive plant called a spikemoss from the perilously steep upper slopes of Mount Isarog and a snake eel from the bottom of the ocean. Many others have avoided detection in the past because of their diminutive size, such as goblin spiders and barnacles that all measure just a few millimeters long.

"One of the likely new urchins is very small — it's called a pea urchin, and yes, it's about the size of a pea," Gosliner said.

Hot hotspots

All these new findings help support the idea that the Philippines "is one of the hottest of the hotspots for diverse and threatened life on Earth," Gosliner said. "We found new species during nearly every dive and hike as we surveyed the country's reefs, rainforests and the ocean floor." [10 Species You Can Kiss Goodbye]

In fact, the researchers suggest the waters of the Philippines may house more species than any other marine environment on Earth. The deep-water channel they sampled is nutrient-rich, allowing life to flourish, and has existed for about 60 million years, giving species a great deal of time to evolve. "All of those factors together have led to the high diversity," Gosliner told LiveScience.

The researchers are sharing their results with Filipino agencies and international groups to develop strategies to best protect the island nation's extraordinarily rich life. This includes outlining the most important places for establishing or expanding marine protected areas, suggested locations for reforestation and reduction of plastic waste.

"We are hoping the findings will result in recommendations that will translate into policies that will produce a more sustainable future for Filipinos while simultaneously protecting the unique biodiversity," Gosliner said.

"This expedition has led us to want to undertake more expeditions to the Philippines in other unexplored areas," he added.

The scientists will present their preliminary results on June 30, during the California Academy of Sciences' weekly NightLife even

BOTANICAL GARDEN - San Fernando City, La Union
Approximately eight (8) kilometers from the town proper of San Fernando City, somewhere along the rolling hills of Brgy. Cadaclan lies the five (5) hectare La Union Botanical Garden.

The Province of La Union takes pride of the Botanical Garden as being not just a recreational park but as a center for flora research and conservation as well. It showcase several garden themes such as the Shade Garden, Sunken Garden, Evergreen Garden, Arid Paradise, Fragrance Garden, Fernery and Palmery.

Entrance to the commitment of San Fernando City for the Environment The La Union Botanical Garden

Located 8 kilometers east of the City of San Fernando, on a forested mountain 900 feet above sea level, is nestled the La Union Botanical Garden - a green spot on the map that is probably the only one of its kind in the country.

The 20 hectare garden located at Barangay Cadaclan is a display of different themed gardens with their scientific names and a sanctuary of varieties of wild animals. Clean and green are the bywords of the garden which provide the visitors maximum satisfaction and a healthful promenade. Dubbed as the “only real” botanical garden existing north of Manila, it is envisioned to be the country’s model botanical garden. It is maintained by 23 gardeners.

Silliman University Marine Laboratory

http://su.edu.ph/jpg/CHED_Award.jpg

Silliman University Marine Laboratory now renamed as Institute of Environment and Marine Sciences was adjudged as the Best Higher Education Institutions (HEI) Research Program in the country by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in 2006.

Unknown to many, SU Marine Lab pioneered the establishment of marine protected areas (MPAs) in the country. The program on marine protected areas has the longest record of research, extension and development work on the subject of marine protected areas (MPA) among academic institutions in the country, having been the first to establish an MPA (Sumilon Island) in 1974. It has established 20 MPAs for fishery enhancement and biodiversity conservation in the Visayas and Mindanao and has extended to 61 others in the form of habitat and resource assessments, biodiversity enhancement, and capacity building.

Though it doesn't have the media publicity mileage compared to other research institutions but in its humble and low profile way it has contributed significantly to this country. It helps maintain the biodiversity of Tubbataha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the beaches and diving sites in Bohol, Cebu, and Mindanao which resulted in the influx of tourists and was one of the first to respond during the Guimaras Oil Spill.

The country's first marine protected area was the Sumilon Island in Cebu in 1974 but due to Cebu's local politics (Abines) the program was aborted. The first successful community managed protected area was the Apo Island in Dauin, Negros Oriental, world reknowned for the abundance of its marine life.

It used to be an island whose seas and marine life were ravaged and damaged by illegal fishing methods but through proper education, it has dramatically changed into a world reknowned diving destination. It has now become a model for a community managed marine protected area which was then replicated in other areas in this country and abroad. Today, tourists from all over the world have come to dive in this island as it is one of the world's best diving sites. In fact, a giant replica of the Apo Island was created at the world's biggest aquarium, the Shedd Aquarium of Chicago. It has now become a permanent fixture in that aquarium and it advertised to the whole world the abudance of marine resources in our country.

Lobregat, Valesco release two tarsiers back into the wild (http://www.zambotimes.com/archives/37847-Lobregat,-Valesco-release-two-tarsiers-back-into-the-wild.html)

http://www.sun-divers.net/pictures/tarsier.jpg

Mayor Celso Lobregat and Councilor Gerky Valesco and officials from the Department of Environment and Natural Resource released a tarsier at the vicinity of the watershed area in upper Pasonanca Wednesday.

The tarsiers, locally known as “chonggo mago” and dubbed as the smallest primates were taken cared by a resident of Lapaz who found them Saturday and nurse them as one of the tarsiers was injured.

Last Tuesday, the temporary yet benevolent keeper of the tarsiers; Pilar Rubio informed Councilor Valesco about the tarsiers which the councilor immediately arranged a meeting with personnel from DENR the very Wednesday afternoon to assess the condition of the tarsiers before suggesting for its release back into the wild.

Mayor Lobregat said tarsiers do exist in Zamboanga, especially in the forested areas off Pasonanca particularly near the watershed as he also appealed people to refrain from hunting tarsiers as these are among the endangered species.

Some residents from Lapaz said the reason why tarsiers and other animals were spotted in the lower portion of said barangay is due to the ongoing and rampant cutting of trees by farmers who sell them as fuel.

Among the DENR personnel who immediately heeded the call of Valesco for them to check the tarsiers were; Agaton Baysa Jr., Luiz Lozano and Michael dela Cruz. After checking the tarsiers, Councilor Valesco informed Mayor Lobregat about the tarsiers and had the Mayor release the cute creature into the wild.

“The forest is the natural habitat of the tarsiers that’s why it should be released in said area for them to live and to thrive”. Lobregat explained.

For his part, Valesco said its not only in Bohol or Palawan that tarsiers live, they also live in the forest of Zamboanga.

Environment office eyes study of tarsier population (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/zamboanga/local-news/2011/09/15/environment-office-eyes-study-tarsier-population-179524)
Thursday, September 15, 2011

ENVIRONMENT officials are eyeing to conduct a research to determine the population of tarsier locally known as "Chonggo Magu" in Zamboanga City's forest.

The idea was brought out by Provincial Environment and Natural Officer Louis Lozano after two tarsiers were recently recovered in La Paz village, 18 kilometers west of the city.

Last Saturday, two tarsiers were found in La Paz by a man cleaning a lot.

Lozano said at least 10 tarsiers of different species were found in the city and were freed at the Pasonanca Natural Park, which serves as the buffer zone of the city's watershed.

Lozano believed there is a high population of tarsiers in the city's forest.

It has been observed that the tarsiers recovered in the city are bigger in size, compared to those found in Bohol.

Tarsiers are haplorrhine primates of the genus Tarsius, a genus in the family Tarsiidae, which is itself the lone extant family within the infraorder Tarsiiformes, according to Wikipedia. (Bong Garcia)

Gardens – La Union is also known as the “Garden Coast” because it has some really impressive flora. San Fernando, La Union’s capital, is where you’ll find the wonderful gardens (Evergreen Garden, Shade Garden, Fragrance Garden, Fernery, etc) that have unique plants and flowers that are unique to the country. The La Union Botanical Garden is where you’ll find all these amazing gifts of nature.

I just came from my first visit to La Mesa Dam Ecopark joining a group of birdwatchers and I have to say, I love this place! The atmosphere changes as soon as you cross the wooden bridge entrance. Different birds chirping, the air suddenly smells fresher and feels cooler...and the I just love watching the different trees and plants. Amazing! We should have more parks like this in the Metro.

I just used my phone cam sorry.
