The Catholic Dome of Alba-Iulia (Karlsburg/Weissenburg) is one of the most representative late-romanic buildings of Romania. Finished around 1291/92 about the same time like the Romanic Cathedrals from Bamberg (1237), Naumburg (1330) and Magdenburg (1363), it is built during the transition from the Romanic style to the gothic one. The three naves and the transept form together a Catholic cross. Among the Romanic elements, which gives the building it’s main character, there are also gothic and renaissance parts added later to the whole.
This is a enhanced picture of the vaults above the main aisle.

Wooooooow ce schimbare .Nu am mai fost la Alba Iulia de foarte mult timp .Imi aduc aminte ca inainte nici o cladire nu era renovata ,iar acum totul arata impecabil.

In 2 mai, fiind in trecere, m-am oprit 2 ore in Alba Iulia sa dau o raita pin cetate. Am fost impresionat constatand ca s-a reabilitat destul de mult de cand am fost acolo ultima data, in 2008: catedrala romano-catolica renovata, cea ortodoxa renovata, portile cetatii si ele (iar una din ele, distrusa, reconstruita de la 0!). S-au pus panouri de informatii de calitate ce cuprind si planuri/sectiuni/fatade ale cladirilor, s-au realizat spatii de expozitie, magazine de suveniruri, cafenele prin vechile bastioane (nu stiu daca in toate, inca nu, cred), precum si alei si locuri de belvedere pe partea lor superioara. Sigur, mai e mult de lucru, dar rezultatele se vad deja. Cetatea era foarte animata, era lume de toate varstele si am vazut cativa turisti chinezi si un grup de turisti spanioli. Alba Iulia pare sa fie pe drumul cel bun.:cheers:

It really is masterpiece of fortification architecture of two Swiss architects. The older Govanni Morandi Viscontii, with his little bit old fashioned old Italian school and great Nicolaus Doxat de Demoret's most modern and inovative architecture, which was his original and monumental development of New Duch school of Menno van Coehorn (contrary to Vauban's).

It clearly can be seen on dawn left and right bastions two older tip of bastions made by Giovanni Morandi Visconti (in the inner side of the wider new bastions made by Nicolaus Doxat). Doxat transformed squaired old fortress (of Roman Castrum origins) in to modern 7-bastioned town-fortress. It is his masterpiece and best survived work. :cheers:

I just got back from Alba Iulia. My last visit was in May and I must say that I was impressed with the changes that happened since. Currently several streets in the fortress and some parts of the defensive ditch are closed for work, while other parts of it are open but not quite finished. The craftsmanship sometimes looks quite poor, but the materials used are fancy and seem to be of very high quality. Also, it appears that every nook and cranny in the fortress has been carefully studied and will be refurbished. In addition, a nice, shiny bike lane, paved with "peach red granite" (I read it on a label:D) will circle the whole fortress.

PS: trebuie sa mai alerge infanteria de linie nitel ca plesneste uniforma :) Oricum, buna initiativa.

Se confirmă existenţa unui templu dedicat zeiţei Nemesis, undeva în spatele Porţii a IV-a a Cetăţii de tip Vauban. Ultima descoperire, cea de astăzi, e un basorelief din marmură de aproximativ 50x30 cm, ce reprezintă un luptător costumat cu lorica musculata. Este elementul care, împreună cu mantia de pe umeri, ne-ar atesta reprezentarea unui comandant de unitate din legiune, un posibil centurion. The fifth gate of Alba Carolina fortress, inaccessible for the past half century after being filled with dirt and walled, whose restoration began in April 2010, officially opened in the presence of the Kingdom of Norway's Ambassador to Romania Oystein Hovdkinn.

The restoration project was implemented by the Ministry of Culture and National Patrimony together with the UN Development Programme and Alba Iulia (western Romania) mayor's office,financed by a grant offered by Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein within the European Economic Area partnership. The total budget for the monument's restoration was 890,000 euros.

Access to the fifth gate was closed by a brick wall and the gate interior, which is a semicircular arched passageway, was filled with dirt and made removed from use in the 60s. The restoration works allowed for a major segment of the original stone floor to be preserved and when the arcades were restored, the gate frame that allowed the drawbridge to operate was preserved.

Erected at the base of St Michael's ravelin, the fifth gate was included in the sightseeing tour called "The Gates Tour," including also the first five gates of the fortress. This circuit will be ready with the finish of the sixth gate, standing about a hundred metres away, in the area of the former summer outdoor cinema in Alba Iulia.

Actualul Parc Custozza e foarte trist in prezent. Si eu cred ca ar merge o piata acolo, dar ar fi fost mult mai bine sa se gaseasca o solutie pentru pastrarea macar unei parti din arborii batrani. Nu cred ca ar fi asa greu. E mare pacat sa dispara toti doar ca sa se planteze altii la cativa metri distanta.

^^ Pai, se vor pastra o parte din arborii batrani, si nu toata piateta va fi pavata, ci vor ramane anumite scuaruri verzi.

Sper ca ai dreptate, in randari i-au facut cam mititei.

Niciodata Istoria si Arheologia nu au fost umilite in acest fel

Zau ? Atunci ce s-a-ntamplat cu Sarmisegetuza, cu cetatile radiate de pe malurile Dunarii... ? Oricum, nu toti copacii vor fi taiati, nu toata piateta va fi pavata, si cetatea va fi amenajata dupa exemplul (de succes) celorlaltor tari care-s cu zeci de ani de evolutie inaintea Romaniei. Doar nu era sa fie lasata cetatea in ruina doar pt. ca unii n-au alt hobby decat sa faca spectacol pe seama taierii unor pomi, auzi, istorici. Da ce om de seama a mancat dude cocotat pe crengile copacilor alora scriind poeme de dragoste, frate, sau ce evenimente istorice, tratate s-au semnat cu seva copacilorlor de-i fac asa speciali ? Toti albaiulienii vor beneficia de pe urma acest proiect daca va fi unul atractiv d.p.d.v. turistic, si o piateta in "centrul" cetatii va aduce un plus de farmec. Daca acele ruine au fost intradevar aruncate la gunoi, atunci e regretabil si criminal, iar responsabilii trebuiesc judecati, dar pt. intentia de a transforma un parc care oricum arata ca dracu, intr-o piateta turistica, e prea mult circ.

Sincer, ce s-a facut in Alba Iulia ar putea fi replicat si in alte locuri din tara. Stiu ca si Aradul are o cetate in forma de stea, dar si Bucurestiul are niste fortificatii (mai noi, ce e drept) care reabilitate ar putea constitui un centru de agrement in zonele in care sunt situate. Mai ales cea din Otopeni ar putea constitui un parc-cultural pentru Otopeni.

Constanta - Alba Iulia (prin Bucuresti-Brasov-Sibiu) = 635 Km. Dar merita din plin sa-i faci.

De cand am aflat de inaugurarea celui mai mare parc din interiorul unei cetati tip Vauban din Romania (93.500 metri pătraţi si un perimetru de 5 Km!) mi-am propus o mini-vacanta aici. Interesul meu era dublu: unul istoric si al doilea, pentru ca scriu o monografie despre Arh. Victor Stephanescu (autorul Catedralei Reintregirii Neamului de la Alba Iulia) care a realizat in Constanta mai multe case de patrimoniu (astazi monumente istorice). Ce am gasit aici este o minunatie, n-am atatea cuvinte de lauda pentru ce s-a realizat. Este extraordinar si m-am simtit prima data in Romania mandru ca se poate face ceva civilizat, pe o asemenea intindere, ca in vest!

Scandalul acela cu parcul/piata medievala cum s-a solutionat pana la urma?

Din ce in ce mai frumoasa :lovethem:
Apropo, imi plac foarte-foarte-foarte mult cele 2 monumente (statuete) ale eroilor romani necunoscuti (?). Cand te gandesti ce darapanatura era acum cativa ani, si acum, cu multa munca, pasiune si profesionalism, au facut-o sa straluceasca de trebuie sa-ti spui mereu in gand, chiar sunt in Romania ? Daca s-ar urma exemplul si, in capitala sa zicem, si s-ar reconstrui acele elemente arhitecturale despre care tot vorbesc peste tot, de pe cladiri, atunci am avea si o capitala de nota 10. Am trecut si eu pe acolo acu' 2 saptamani, dar cum iarna asta a fost aspra cu mine si m-a trantit pe gheata de suficiente ori incat sa-mi strice si aparatul foto, si camera de la ambele telefoane, am ramas doar sa fotografiez cetatea vizual, in memorie. D'abea astept sa vad ce vor mai face in continuare, ca totul pana acum a fost o surpiza placuta dupa alta :)

Scandalul acela cu parcul/piata medievala cum s-a solutionat pana la urma?

Eu din ce-am citit pe ici pe colo, am inteles ca se va realiza proiectul propus, indiferent de proteste, ceea ce ma bucura, ca-mi place proiectul.

Asa cum am spus, cele 2 interese m-au condus mai intai la Catedrala Reintregirii Neamului (sau a Incoronarii). Aceasta, impreuna cu alte cladiri importante, sunt amplasate chiar pe platforma cetatii ALBA CAROLINA. Exista si un eveniment: Zilele Orasului Alba Iulia. Dar acestea 2 le las la sfarsit si incep cu CETATEA.

Deoarece era tambalau mare cu zilele orasului nu prea aveai unde sa-ti parchezi masina, am cautat un drum secundar, dupa ce am ocolit trei-sferturi din cetate. Si l-am gasit in partea de nord, pe o strada asfaltata doar putin, restul, spre cetate, fiind pietruita. Aici va dezvalui primul episod al vizitei mele.

Am parcat masina in apropiere de Ravelinul Sf. Elisabeta, care este situat intre doua Bastioane: Bastionul St. Carol si Bastionul Sf. Elisabeth. Aici este amenajat un spatiu RYMA, unde se poate manca, bea, asculta muzica buna, iar inauntru (in catacombele si tunelurile amenajate) se mai afla si un bar, grupuri sanitare, dar si sali de expozitie si se joaca chiar si tenis de masa!

Stiiti de ce imi place ce vad in poze dincolo de estetic?

Pentru ca reabilitarea aceasta a creeat un "centru" adevarat al orasului, un punct natural de comert, petrecere a timpului liber, social etc.

Cum ar trebui sa fie orice centru istoric in orasele noastre.

De aici am intrat pe amenajarile (extraordinare) facute intre zidurile cetatii si bastioane, practic fostele santuri cu o latime considerabila. Toate zidurile au intrari in catacombele/tunelurile de sub bastioane sau platforma cetatii. Aici s-au amenajat (deocamdata partial) spatii cu diferite destinatii pentru vizitatori. Am intrat si intr-o zona care tocmai se amenaja. Munca, nu gluma, si de calitate. Nu mai spun de pavajele santurilor, mobilierul urban, statuiele - toate sunt intr-o armonie si de bun gust.

Tot ce s-a facut in cetate arata foarte bine, si vad ca au avansat destul de mult de cand am fost eu acolo, in aprilie.

Daca Poarta 1, situata la extremitatea estică, are forma unui arc de triumf cu 3 deschideri (evidentiind la partea superioara stema Casei de Austria, statuile lui Venus si Marte flancate de 2 bombarde - iar pe fatade Eneea salvându-şi tatăl, pe Anchise, din flăcările Troiei, şi lupta lui Hercule cu Anteu la exterior, Perseu ţinând în mână capul tăiat al Meduzei şi Hercule în lupta cu leul din Nemeea, la interior), Poarta 2 - din care ramasese doar pilonii, a fost ornamentata cu statuetele care se aflau la intrarea in Muzeul Unirii (Atlanti, Lei, Efigii Imperiale)

Poarta 3 este cea mai importanta si mai impunatoare dintre portile cetatii si asigura intrarea în fortareata propriu-zisa. Reprezinta cel mai important ansamblu sculptural al cetatii' Edificiul prismatic poarta un bogat decor figurativ, antropomorf, zoomorf si vegetal alcatuit din scene de lupta, arme, steaguri, trofee, blazoane, mascheron si care imbraca antablamente si cimpuri, subliniind prin relieful plat al redarilor, volumul trupurilor tensionate ale Atlantilor. Spre est, poarta este incoronata de statuia ecvestra a imparatului Carol al VI-lea, în timpul caruia s-a construit cetatea. Ea este asezata în mijlocul curtinei formate de bastioanele Sf. Eugen si Sf. Capistrano, având 4 piloni si 8 pilastri care sustin boltile si arcadele celor trei intrari. Bogat ornamentata, ea este considerata ca reprezentativa pentru sculptura baroca din Transilvania.

Incepand de-aici, in cetate te intampina circa 50 de paznici (am intrebat) imbracati in costume de soldati austrieci si cu armament adecvat timpului! Primul "pazeste" podul mobil, reconstituit si el recent, de la intrarea in cetate.

Cea mai apropiata de Poarta 3 este cladirea Comisariatului si a Manutantei. Langa ea, in coltul de sud-est se afla intarea (care, dupa trei trepte o iei abrupt in jos pe o rampa inclinata) ce duce la o platforma interioara (un mic balconas) de unde se vede camera de tortura a temnitelor (aflata in interiorul Bastionului Eugen of Savoya). Intrarea este pazita tot de un "soldat austriac".

Din cand in cand, in puncte de interes, ti se descrie pe cate un panou unde te afli si pe ce trasee pot sa continui. Aici era Bastionul Eugeniu de Savoia, de unde am plecat spre centrul cetatii. Peluzele cu iarba sunt splendide.

Una dintre atracţiile Traseului celor Trei Fortificaţii este Platforma de Artilerie, pe care sunt dispuse trei tunuri de epocă funcţionale. Acestea pot fi văzute executând câte o salvă de onor în cinstea drapelului municipiului Alba Iulia, arborat pe zidul cetăţii Alba Carolina, în fiecare sâmbătă, la ora 12:10. Salvele sunt executate de garda Traseului celor Trei Fortificaţii, după defilare, folosind tehnica începutului de secol al XVIII-lea. Tunurile care funcţionau pe platformele de artilerie erau fabricate chiar in atelierele cetăţii. Dacă treci sanţul (pe pod), dincolo este amenajată o schelă de execuţie prin spânzurătoare.

Excelent ce s-a facut la Alba Iulia. Nu e cu nimic mai prejos de alte cetati asemanatoare din Vest. Ultima oara cand am calcat pe acolo a fost prin 1997 si, evident, arata cu totul altfel. Sper sa se si pastreze.

Nu stiu de cat timp s-a dat in folosinta, dar deja vad foarte multa lume.
Sa vedeti la anul care vine, in vara, puhoi de lume, pentru ca in prezent, putina lume stie de acest complex. Intre timp i se duce vestea, asemeni Sibiului. :)

De la aceasta belvedere am cautat... ceva umbra si poate un suc. Si probabil ca cine a gandit traseele astea a pus la fix un "chiosc" in apropiere. Dar ce chiosc !! E o caruta cu coviltir si un umbrar. Alaturi mai sunt 2 carute si niste corturi. E formidabil!

Cat despre cetate , arata superb , incredibil de frumos , stau si ma intreb , e in Romania ? :)) .... Acum sunt curios cum arata si restul orasului nu doar cetatea .....

In apropiere pot fi văzute ruinele porţii de sud a Castrului Roman de la Alba Iulia - care a fost construit în anul 106 de către Legiunea a XIII-a Gemina.

Castrul avea o formă patrulateră, delimitând o suprafaţă interioară de 19 ha. Accesul în interiorul castrului roman se realiza prin intermediul a patru porţi dispuse câte una pe fiecare latură. Dintre acestea, singura care s-a păstrat este poarta de sud (porta principalis dextra). Aceasta este cel mai vechi obiectiv turistic din Cetatea bastionară de tip Vauban din Alba Iulia şi se poate vedea în cadrul Traseului celor Trei Fortificaţii.

Elements of Roman masonry that may belong to the headquarters (Principia) of the Apulum camp have been discovered under Alexandru Sterca Sulutiu Street of Alba Iulia (central Romania), during the archaeological assistance works for the rehabilitation of the Alba Carolina Fortress.

Alba Iulia National Museum of the Union Deputy Director General Constantin Inel announced that three lines of walls belonging to some interior compartments were discovered, probably a part of the eastern side of the landmark, as well as two building elements of the entrance to Principia, represented by two access pillars of the building's gate. The vestiges were discovered at a one-metre-and-a-half depth, right under the street roadway, during the works on the sewerage system, on the eastern side of the Custozza Park.

'These structures have been archaeologically and topographically registered, the sewerage pipe having been placed under these structures, by specific techniques of digging under, and the walls have been subsequently covered with layers of sand and ballast for primary preservation, until a decision is made on the research and exploitation of these highly important archaeological sites for the camp of Apulum,' Constantin Inel said.

According to him, the discoveries back up once more the argument in favour of this building being researched, for its high importance to the planimetry and architecture of the Roman camp of Apulum. Therefore these vestiges will be a reference point in the organization of archaeological research works for uncovering the Roman camp headquarters of the 13th Legion Gemina.

The Roman camp of Apulum was the largest in Roman Dacia, its building beginning most probably during the rule of emperor Hadrian. The Orthodox Cathedral was still open at 10 p.m. and there were quite a few tourists visiting it. A thing to appreciate.

Also, an interesting thing that I've noticed is that on the northern side of the fortress the newly planted vegetation is mostly coniferous, while in the rest it's deciduous. :)

Nu stiu cata lume are habar, dar in Catedrala Romano-Catolica Sfantul Mihail este inmormantat Iancu de Hunedoara. Multa lume trece pe acolo si din pacate intra doar la Catedrala Ortodoxa.

^^ Dar "poarta" asta n-arata ca-n poza de pe panou, asa-i ? Am citit ca n-ar fi siguri de cum ar fi aratat poarta si d-asta s-au ferit sa reconstruiasca mai mult, dar asta nu i-a-mpiedicat sa publice panoul ala cu macheta castrului, semn ca se putea foarte bine reconstrui total si ceea ce putea fi reconstuit contribuind la atractivitatea cetatii. Poate ma vor surprinde spre final cu ceva planuri in acest sens :)
P'aia (fantana) chiar n-am vazut-o pe viu pan' acum, insa din ce-am citit pe ici pe colo am ramas cu ideea c-ar fi noua, si daca stau sa ma gandesc ca-nainte era o cazarma militara acolo, tind sa cred ca-i noua, ca altfel n-ar fi avut in trecut niciun rost fantana acolo, nu ? Asta daca nu cumva tineau fecioarele alea de piatra militarii ocupati in lipsa femeilor.

Eu cred ca ar iesi un talmes-balmes, ar fi ca la circ. Si asa ponderea vestigiilor romane in cetate e aproape nula.

Aveam impresia ca erau mai extinse, din poze. Daca e putin intr-adevar nu merita.

Da, cand vor fi autostrazi care sa uneasca toate orasele importante ale Romaniei, presupun ca abia atunci cetatenii romani vor putea vizita aceste comori de arhitectura si mai ales aceste comori spirituale ale tarii. Acum nu poate fi vorba de 'excursii cu elevii' din Ploiesti sau Bucuresti pana la Alba Iulia! - excursii care se organizeaza in toata UE spre locurile istorice si spirituale din tarile respective.
