An Iranian daily wrote on Sunday the first Iranian private museum is to be inaugurated on the occasion of World Museum Day on May 18 in Isfahan.

The museum, which is being established by factory owner Hossein Hosseinpanah, will feature collections of rare Iranian and foreign books, stamps and wrist watches, the English-language daily 'Iran News' noted quoting Mehr News Agency (MNA).

Radios, phonographs, phonograph records of the world's musical masterpieces, matches, cigarettes, lighters, earthenware, crystal dishes, bells, and an archive of texts of lectures delivered by famous people will be shown in the museum, Iran News noted quoting Mehr News Agency (MNA).

The 45-year-old Hosseinpanah used his pocket money to collect stamps as a child and later became an antique collector.

He is establishing the museum in a beautiful old house called the riest's House in the stone masons' neighborhood in Isfahan's Jolfa district, said the article.

"The renovation process of the house is almost complete and I hope to open the museum on schedule," he said according to the article.

He named the museum "The Hidden Paradise in Priest's House", explaining that the true owners of this museum will be the visitors, who should take advantage of this cultural heritage.

He expressed hope that Isfahan would one day have at least 50 private museums, saying "Isfahan is itself a rich museum. Each house has at least one or two precious antiques which could be put on display by the owners.

Esfahan and Her Sisters/ St. Petersburg, Russia

http://www.chn.ir/NaqsheJahan//manage/photo/san.jpg
As the first step towards such relations, on May 7, 1989 Esfahan signed a sister city agreement with Xian, a historical city in central China, an experience which has then repeated for seven more times with cities like Barcelona in Spain.

Because of common historical and cultural backgrounds, ancient cities worldwide, may sometimes issue a kind of decentralized relation via signing an agreement of “Sister City” which normally entails the deployment of expertise delegations to benefit from each other’s experiences in different fields.

As the first step towards such relations, on May 7, 1989 Esfahan signed a sister city agreement with Xian, a historical city in central China, a successful experience for Esfahan which has then repeated for seven more times with Barcelona in Spain, Florence in Italy, St Petersburg in Russia, Iasi in Romania, Freiburg in Germany, Yerevan in Armenia, and Havana in Cuba.

According to sister city agreements, the involved cities cooperates in different fields including cultural and social context, civilization, etc. Esfahan has received numerous delegations from her sister cities so far, which have been the origin of lots of changes for better in this historical city.

St. Petersburg, the forth sister of Esfahan

The sister city agreement between Esfahan and St. Petersburg was signed on May 2, 1999 in Esfahan to make St Petersburg the forth official city sister of Esfahan after Xian in China, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, and Florence in Italy.

The initial agreement of sister cities was signed by Krishanov, deputy governor of St Petersburg province and Mohammad Ali Javadi, Esfahan’s then mayor, as representatives of two cities.

This agreement was subsequently followed by the detailed agreement of sister cities in eight articles which was signed by Valentina Matuienko, the governor of St Petersburg province representing the Russian part and Seied Morteza Saghaian Nejad, the mayor of Esfahan representing the Iranian part.

In the final agreement, both parts, namely Esfahan municipality and the local government of St Petersburg from Russian federation, expressed their intentions for friendship and goodwill between the two cities as well as maximizing their economic, Industrial, technical, and cultural potentials through bilateral collaborations.

The eight consisting articles of the final agreement concern the issues of mutual trust, development of financial and commercial co-operations, joint execution of various industrial plans, collaboration between the commerce chambers of both parts as well as institutes and companies, improvement of co-operations between travel agencies, joint exhibition setting up, establishing bilateral relations between organizations, societies, and scientific and technical institutes, and cooperation between sport teams.

In her speech before signing the sister city agreement in Esfahan city hall, Valentina Matuienko, the governor of St Petersburg, indicated, “Esfahan and St Petersburg have a lot of similarities in cultural and historical aspects.” She added, “Both cities come to the decision to sign the sister city agreement due to the success in their previous experience of co-operations.”

“St Petersburg possesses extensive economic facilities as well as big potentials and has attracted lots of foreign companies for investment,” said Matuienko while noting that this city is not only an industrial and cultural hub but also is a political capital of the region.

Pointing out the obstacles faced St Petersburg in constructing its subway network, she asserted that their long and invaluable experience in this field could be beneficial for Esfahan local authorities who were seeking a solution to minimize the undesirable effects of subway crossing the historical context of the city.

In the same meeting, Saghaian Nejad, the mayor of Isfhan also emphasized the numerous similarities between the two cities especially in cultural, social, and economic aspects and said that the agreement affiliated the two countries and a new chapter in their bilateral relations was opened. He asserted, “Considering the wide range of common interests of Iran and Russia, the development of friendly bilateral relations is of utmost importance for both countries.”

Familiarization with St Petersburg

St Petersburg was founded by Peter the great in 1703 in northwest of Russian Federation on the Nova river estuary to Finland gulf. The city now covers an area of approximately 607 square kilometers which exceeds 1439 square kilometers when taking its suburbs and outskirt into account.

St Petersburg is consisted of 42 islands which are connected to each other by 560 bridges. Some of these bridges are parted open during night time to allow shipping on Nova River. The climatic condition is harshly cold and the temperature is only suitable to a certain degree in June and July.

At the outset of Russian Bolshevik revolution in 1917, this city was named Petrograd (City of Peter), but when Lenin died the city was renamed to Leningrad (City of Lenin), a name which remained unaltered until the decline of Soviet Union in 1991 when its name changed to the original “St Petersburg”.

The main architectural icons of the city are made of stone and one can find lots of marvelous landscape and attractions around the city including Peter and Paul Fortress. The original purpose of the fortress was to defend the land newly acquired from the Swedes. However, its main use up to 1917 was as a political prison and the first inmate was Peter's own son Alexey, who was followed by other notables such as Dostoevsky, Gorky, Trotsky and Lenin's older brother, Alexander. Pushkin, a renowned Russian novelist was also buried in this city.

St Petersburg cathedral, Tsar palaces, and beautiful museums including Hermitage museum which is situated just off the river, are among other attractions of the city.

Through the history of the city, St Petersburg has been always the first and the foremost centre for oriental studies in Russia. The education of eastern languages commenced in Russia in 1804 while the first Arabic and Persian language faculty in St Petersburg University was inaugurated in 1818. By the establishment of Oriental Studies College in 1855, new classes titled as Pashto, Persian Literature, Avestan, and ancient Persian, were initiated in which Solomon, a famous Russian academician and expert in Iranian studies used to teach Pahlavi, Avestan, and basics of Iranian languages for over 40 years from 1876 to 1916. Later on, in 1916 a totally separate section was dedicated to Persian Literature in this university.

Esfahan and Her German Sister

http://www.chn.ir/NaqsheJahan//manage/photo/Freiborg.jpg
Regarding the common historical and cultural backgrounds, historical cities tend to form a mutual relation through signing so-called sisterhood agreements and sending expert teams for using each other’s experiments.

Regarding the common historical and cultural backgrounds, historical cities tend to form a mutual relation through signing so-called sisterhood agreements and sending expert teams for using each other’s experiments.

In 7th of May 1989, Esfahan took the first step in the field with signing a sisterhood agreement with the city of Shian in China, which was followed with the same action with 7 other cities, namely Barcelona in Spain, Florence in Italy, Saint Petersburg in Russia, Yash in Romania, Freiburg in Germany, Yerevan in Armenia, and Havana in Cuba.

According to these agreements, the aforementioned cities will cooperate in several fields including cultural, social and civil ones. Since then, Esfahan has welcomed numerous delegates from her sister cities, a strategy which has led to positive transformations in the old city.

Esfahan, the first Moslem sister of Freiburg

The sisterhood agreement between Esfahan and Freiburg was signed in 28th of October 2000. With a 200-thousand population, the German city of Freiburg is an industrial and tourist centre in Germany. Freiburg’s mayor, Dr. Ralf Bume, describes the city as follows:

“Freiburg people are famous for their hospitality and that is why tourists coming here feel at home. Beautiful monuments, churches, student life style, and most importantly, its rich culture have had a deep impact on everybody.”

Esfahan is considered the 9th sister of Freiburg and it’s most populated one, with a population of 1.5 million people. The sisterhood agreement between Esfahan and Freiburg is the first sisterhood agreement between 2 Iranian and German cities.

The main goal in Freiburg sisterhood agreement with Esfahan is to support the reformation procedure in Iran and helping the institutionalization of democracy. Furthermore, Esfahan with its brilliant historical background has been one of the most important tourist attractions for foreign tourists.

After World War II, Freiburg signed numerous sisterhood agreements with cities such as Innsbruck in Austria, Padoa in Italy, and Gildford in UK. With the changes in the global political atmosphere during the Cold War, Freiburg decided to extend her sisterhood with cities all over the world and to play an improving role. With this goal in mind, Freiburg signed a sisterhood agreement with Matsuyama in Japan, and Madison in the US. It should be noted that Esfahan is the first sister of Freiburg in the world of Islam.

In the downtown of Freiburg, there is a cathedral dating back to 700 years ago with a height of 116 meters. Though the belfries of other churches in the city are older, dating back to the Middle Ages, the belfry of the Freiburg cathedral is considered the most beautiful one in the world of Christianity. The biggest museums of the city were established in 1920-3 and are comprised of masterpieces by great painters like Heins Beldung. The contemporary art museum in Freiburg was constructed in 1985 and belongs to the city's municipality.

In the Town Hall and other public places, there are centers offering information about Freiburg and her sisters. Providing tours, granting scholarships, and residential facilities are some of the activities sister cities do. Mutual cultural cooperation is another effort for making a closer contact between the cities. For instance, theatrical and musical groups of Granada, Innsbruck and Padoa performed some interesting programs in Freiburg a while ago.

The cooperation between sister cities also includes economic dimensions. According to an agreement between Esfahan and Freiburg, the latter is responsible for the renewal of Esfahan transportation system and the construction of structures specially designed for solar energy.

Isfahan, The Second Heaven
By: Dr. R. Abouei

Famous Iranian poem: Go to Isfahan to experience the second heaven

ith increasing populations almost 20 smaller settlements gradually formed a unified Isfahan during the sixth and seventh centuries. The city has experienced many changes as capital of two great Islamic Empires: Seljukid and Safavid. These changes clearly show the regularity of the urban structure operating during this period. Although the city was the result of two immense urban plans in the eleventh and seventeenth centuries the golden age of Isfahan was in the Safavid era, particularly from 1587 to 1736. In fact, the seventeenth century is portrayed as a period of movement leading to a second period of urban planning in Isfahan towards the end of the century. The city development, to the south of old city, was the most important planned city in Iran which is still considered an outstanding example of urban planning. This regular structure provided the armature on which imperial Isfahan developed especially in the southern extension of the city.

Among the cities of Iran, Isfahan holds an extremely distinguished place, originating in its emergence during the Sassanid period before the birth of Islam. During the reign of Shah Abbas, the new square of the city, a wide straight thoroughfare, the new quarters and the complicated networks of bazaars are the four strongest points for evolution of Isfahan which is described briefly in the paper. Also, the paper provides briefly a chronological and morphological framework to survey the development of the city in seventeenth century of Iran.

Old and New City Centres
Isfahan is situated in a fertile and well-watered area, with a river named the Zayandeh-Roud River flowing through it. Under the name Jay Isfahan appears as a garrison town of the Sassanid period, and in early Islamic times it consisted of two big settlements: Yahudiyeh and Shahrestan (Jay or Gaba). According to historian Balazari it seems that Yahudiyeh and Jey were two important settlements in central Iran in 637. Gradually, with increasing population towns and villages including Forsan, Yavan, Sonbolan, Jey and Yahudiyeh formed a unified Isfahan. A noteworthy city in Sasanid times, Isfahan passed to the Islamic Empire in the mid-seventh century and served as a capital for the province named Gabal or Al-Jibal. According to historian Ibn-e-Rosteh the province included 2300 cities, towns, and villages irrigated with the river Zayande-Roud. His text discusses an extraordinary system as well as a good management plan regarding the allocating of water resources for the province cities.

In the eighth century, Isfahan was witness to the establishment of a new mosque in the town of Yavan. There was a small mosque in Jey before that and the local ruler decided to transfer the religious, commercial, and administrative centres of the city from Jey to the north. Gradually, the residential centres of the city were formed around the mosque. Naser Khosrow, poet and the famous Iranian travel writer, described the city when he arrived in Isfahan on 25th June 1052:

The city has a strong and tall rampart including many gates and fortifications. There are many rivers as well as the nice and tall buildings including a magnificent Friday Mosque which was built in the city centre. According to the records, the total length of the city wall is three and half Farsangs [approx. 14 miles]. I saw many bazaars including one bazaar which 200 moneychangers were working there as well as an alley named Kutaraz consist of fifty caravanserais. Naser Khosro described Isfahan as Persia's most fertile, perfect and beautiful city.

About twenty years later in 1072, Malik Shah was crowned as the Sultan of Seljuk and moved the capital of the Seljukid Empire from Ray (in the south of modern Tehran) to Isfahan. The Seljukid Empire stretched from the shores of the Mediterranean up to the Central Asian Mountains, and Isfahan was the capital of this great territory. In the late eleventh century, the city became one of the most famous cities of Islam and could rival other important Islamic cities such as Baghdad and Cairo.

The city's most splendid time began in 1598 when Shah Abbas the Great (1587-1629) decided to make it his capital and rebuilt it into one of the largest cities of the world. Previously, the old central square of the city lay besides the old Friday Mosque dating back to at least 1200 years and was believed to have been built on the site of Zoroastrian fire temple. Gradually, royal urban planners under Shah Abbas created the new heart of the city to the south of the old city centre named Naghsh-e-Jahan square, an open space between the older Seljukid city centre and the river. The considerable size of the square is about 1700 feet in length and 520 feet in width.

Rather, the royal planners sketched out a plan that would run from the new city centre to the old square including the complicated networks of bazaars, porticoes and many caravanserais which were built during the reign of Shah Abbas. Around the new square, Shah Abbas created the noted six-storey palace named Ali-Qapu which dominates the eastern side of the new square. On the east of the square was built the Sheikh Lotfollah mosque and in the north of the square was the entrance to the Royal bazaar, the Qaysariyah. Also, the new Friday Mosque was created in the south of the square, one of the masterpieces of world architecture. The new square was used for holding festivals, markets and games of polo. Today, the original goal posts are still in the place. The square was completely surrounded by more than two hundred handicrafts shops on the ground floor and the second floor had been allocated for travellers and periodic ceremonial uses.

Towards the South
Gradually, under Shah Abbas, the city was embellished with many fine gardens, bridges, buildings, and roads notably the avenue named Chahar-Bagh which means literally Four Gardens. In 1602, the planners proposed the avenue between the river and the royal gate (Darvazeh-Dowlat) which was extended up towards the south of the city in 1620s. Besides these splendid constructions four urban quarters were created under Shah Abbas named Royal, New Julfa, Abbas-Abad, and Gabrian. At its zenith, under Shah Abbas the Great Isfahan had a population of about 600,000 making it one of the world's largest cities of the time. It may be concluded that the city centre smoothly developed to the south by respecting many historical buildings and the urban fabric which were created in previous eras. Also, the city development policy was concerned for the welfare of the people and sensitively considered the balance between people's day to day necessities and the potential of the existing natural resources.

Si-o-Sepol

SOURCE: http://www.chnphoto.ir/gallery.php?&gallery_uid=&lang=en&gallery_uid=348

Isfahan’s Si-o-Sepol (the Thirty-Three Bridge) is a unique construction from the Safavid era (1501-1736 AD) and is located toward the end of Chahar Baq Abbasi Street in the city of Isfahan. This gorgeous bridge was constructed with mortar and brick over Zayandehrood River during the reign of Shah Abbas I, the first Safavid king, in order to connect the northern parts of Isfahan to its southern areas. Beautifully designed arches and the entrances of Si-o-Sepol Bridge are among its most notable features. Zayandehrood River has long been regarded as a holly river, a fact which has added to the historic significance of the Si-o-Sepol Bridge. In fact, UNESCO’s insistence to register the Chahar Baq Street together with this bridge in its List of World Heritage Sites is due to the importance of this Safavid bridge from a historic perspective.

The longest bridge of Isfahan, Pol-e Alahverdi Khan is a unique masterpiece of Iranian architecture
which was built by our great Georgian hero, Alahverdi Khan!

A Seventeenth-Century Painting:

Isfahan has thousands of monuments and then comes Shiraz, right?

panj-delaavaraan
May 5th, 2006, 07:55 PM
Well, the two are different. Shiraz is an older city, which has more anciet architecture (such as Persepolis, etc.), and has some great Iranians greats that lived in the city in the early conquest of Islam in Iran. Isfahan is newer and has relatively newer architcture (in the past 1000 years). It has more stuff b/c it was the capital of Iran for centuries in recent history.

In short, the two cities are both great, and are different :)

Esfahan (Isfahan) - اصفهان

There is a Tehran thread, a Tabriz, Shiraz and Mashhad thread, but Esfahan doesn't have its own thread. It's time that it did! Isfahan has been designated by UNESCO as a world heritage city. It contains a wide range of Islamic Architectural styles ranging from the 11th century (C.E.) to the 19th. It is the heart of Islamic Iranian culture.

Here are some recent photos of Esfahan where it snowed and the river froze over!

very good pictures, thank you. I even heard that some could play football in the river. I hope it rains more, so it remains full of water all the year. Before the rainings the government said that Iran has 30% less water than it needs, but now after the raining's they have 24% less. They said that this year there were about 60% less raining than two years ago.

^^Yes, that's very good. All over Iran rained and snowed more than last year, for example yesterday it snowed in Mashhad. But unfortunately there were also 2-3 deaths because of the floods ( I think in Qom).

i hope it is good for the crops even though iran use a lot of irrigation there is sometimes not enough water...

in ghom they try to save some people with a bulldozer instead of helicopter and it sank  (but those people still lived alhamdolellah)

iman08
April 16th, 2009, 07:16 PM
^^ yes they often use a bulldozer, but not helicopter, but one of the reasons is that they have a pretty small number of helicopters for this purposes.. . I ask myself why didn't it snow much in winter, but now in spring there is snowing and raining a lot - is it because of the world warming and it's consequences or is it normal?
The government said recently that if the the weather continues raining (but not as much as the last 2 weeks) as the weather forecast has proposed, this year will be a very good year for the crops.

^^ Not really. :( They made a big play about opening the line just before the elections for some propaganda. This was done hurridly before even any stations or facilities had been built. But they did such a botched job that the rails buckled because they probably werent laid properly. See the discussion with pics here - http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=397034&page=10

Khajou restoration becomes destructive
Tue, 21 Jul 2009 09:16:29 GMT

The restoration being carried out on Isfahan's Khajou Bridge is but a few steps from ruining the ancient structure that dates to the 17th century.

Khajou Bridge, built in the 1650s, is the most famous bridge in Isfahan, and possibly even the whole of Iran. The bridge has witnessed numerous travelers passing since the 17th century.

Khajou Bridge stands tall on the foundations of an even older bridge.

The bridge has undergone some restoration during the past month, undertaken by the Water and Sewage Organization and the Municipality of Isfahan. The restoration process, however, seems to have become destructive.

“The restoration project has entailed replacement of some historical stones with new ones which is not wise or authentic in fact,” Isfahan MP Hassan Kamran told Mehr News Agency.

“Each one of these ancient stones has a message. The structure must be restored and its message must be protected from becoming forgotten over time,” he insisted.

The bridge has 23 arches. It measures 105 meters long and is 14 meters wide. It also functions as a weir; the downstream side forms a series of steps that carries water to a much lower level.

Some steps in the stairs to Khajou Bridge have been replaced with new stones. Experts are concerned, questioning if the innovation works as well as the original.

They destroy everything....and they don't matter if it is a historical building which can't be undone so easily....:bash:

Esfahan, truly one of the most amazing cities in the world. I really hope Esfahanis ant outsiders realize this and don't ruin it by building 30 story buildings that don't go with the city's look.

That is the meaning of the word "Esfahan"?

"Esfahan" comes from the Middle Pahlavi Persian name of the city "Spahan," which means "the soldiers" making the meaning the "city of soldiers." Upon the Islamic/Arab expansion the pronunciation changed. In standard Arabic there is no "p" so arabs could not pronounce "Spahan" so it was from then on called "Esfahan."

finally some street level pics!!

looks nice and the boutique one is nice, never knew clarkes had branches in iran

looking at the first two pics, the streets are clean and theres no garbage, but man it would look 200 times better if they had none of those colourful plaques and signs and huge store headings hanging!! lol

they just do it to destroy all good things about iran, just like how they destroyed everything else

FreddyB
June 16th, 2011, 07:50 AM
^^ i dont agree with it.
no doubts there are some who prefer Iranian culture to be destroyed since they believe it has a conflict with the Islamic culture(which imo there isnt).BUT they are only max 10% of the gov and they can't do much.Even if they really didn't care, they would care about the economic issues. While Zayande river is dry, they need to provide water for some farms from their budget or lose them.Isfahan's attraction would decrease w.o the river and it may effect the tourism which tourism is a really important economical issue for every country

SoroushPersepolisi
June 16th, 2011, 12:58 PM
if they cared so much, they wouldnt of made the dam where it is

they wouldnt do many other things, they wouldnt rape and torture in prisons, they wouldnt kill , they wouldnt .....

they just do shit without calculations! because they dont care!

FreddyB
June 18th, 2011, 03:20 PM
they care about their economy.the river drying is not positive to their economy

yea but you know, it costs money, and by the time the municipality cleans it up itl take a while,

but the fact that some people do it in the first place is the actual problem

Nimaa
June 22nd, 2011, 05:27 AM
you would think that in a police state like Iran, shit like this would be preventable. Put a couple of rishoos down at the bridge, a couple of times a week, and you'll stop this from happening w/in a year.

Shah Abbas brings him to Iran from "jabal amele hor" which was in ottomans empire(modern Lebanon),which means he is originally Lebanese
for such stuff it's hard to find a source but I'll just mention mine.
>>My dad<< he has good history information

SoroushPersepolisi
July 6th, 2011, 09:59 PM
actually he moves to iran with is father at age 13 , he attends school in iran etc he was born in balbak, but the question is what were his roots, theres no info, and his father isnt mentioned much,

he might of been of iranian origin that returned to iran , valy hichi peyda nemishe

i did some research and found out that sheikh bahai actually didnt construct any of these lol , its was mostly mohamad esfahani beig and some other architect, bahai was more of a poet, and religious scholar

FreddyB
July 21st, 2011, 10:34 AM
i have heard alot about bahai made the "menar jonban"
other stuff are made by Tabrizian architects which they were forced to go to Isfahan in the safavid's era.idk why they haven't displayed the name of the Tabrizian architects in the structures..

SoroushPersepolisi
July 21st, 2011, 02:57 PM
are menar jonban and the famous sheikh bahai bathhouse are his

they didnt force anyone. esme hishkiro ru sakhtemuna nazashtan (bejoz tako tuki az sakhtemunaye kuchik tar)

there are a list of their names.they are clearly iranian turkic names
P.S. the buildings in Isfahan are made in an Iranian-Azeri way(they didn't build that way in Isfahan)
anyhow thats what I know.I may be wrong tho

SoroushPersepolisi
July 22nd, 2011, 02:24 PM
baba who gives a crap? hala ya az tabrizan ya az mashhad ya az shirazo esfahano rashto ahvaz, mahand (mohem) ine ke iraniyeh

ive seen the names of the big architects of esfahan, theres nothing specifically "turkic" about them
there are a few from each corner of iran

certainly when shah abbas moved from qazvin he took many qazvini intellectuals as well
certainly they are mixed and from all parts of iran but its not mentioned usually wherr they are from , un zaman ham be in chiza kar nadashtan

and well the safavid style itself is a style, and again in general the basic layouts of safavid buildings can be found throughout iran

the one i think has a special tabriz touch is the emam ali (atiq square) mosque (the all brick one), reminds me alot of kabud cami

great pics peykan! hope to see more

age dari street level ham bezar!

nd btw is it okay for u if i use some of these pics for the esfahan thread in the cityscapes section?

You're more than welcome Soroush jan.

I don't have too many street level pics. You kind of avoid taking photos of the streets because the city has too many historical sites that overshadow
everything else.

And feel free to use the photos in the cityscapes section.

one of the issues with zayandeh roud is that the eastern part has some water but it is not enough to get through, its funny to see what people do with the water
