I would have expected the opposite - the pillars should disappear but the inner solid building should remain.

Ancient temples used to be converted into christian churches (at least those that survive till now were, most certainly) so the inside of the building was modified, usually by removing everything to make more space. Thats because pagan religions weren't practiced inside a building, the Ancient Greek temple as we know was only used as the house of the God's statue (and in many cases, like the Parthenon, as a treasury too).

Is it really the same temple on the fotos? The temple on the first foto is in much better shape compared to the second one. Aswell I count 14 main columns along the long side on the first foto but 15 columns on the second foto.
EDIT: Nevermind! I see now that it says "second temple" under the second foto. :D
