mlm October 11th, 2004, 03:37 PM Am I the only one who's finding the Skyper facade a bit boring? I was very optimistic about this tower, and I still love the shape, but the facade is a bit disappointing if you ask me:|
I think it would have been better with a Gallileo/Main Tower kind of facade with small windows. Or maybe pure glass without those small metal things between the windows (in a Deutsche Bank kind of way).

Architectural Competition for FRA’s Future Terminal 3 Ends
20.05.2005
Fraport AG's multi-phase architectural competition for the planned Terminal 3 at the southern side of Frankfurt Airport (FRA) has been completed. After meeting for intensive discussions during the last two days, the competition jury chose the winning design yesterday.
The experts selected the concept of Prof. Christoph Mäckler from Frankfurt. The decision for the winning project was based on the following key criteria. The concept was convincing because of its functionality, which very much meets all operational requirements. Furthermore, the extremely flexible concept allows for demand-driven modular development of the various construction phases until 2015. Also, Mäckler's proposal stayed exactly within the prescribed budget for the Terminal 3 project.
Prof. Barbara Jakubeit, Fraport AG's executive board member responsible for real estate development, said: "This clearly defined concept provides a convincing design solution for the new airport development area at the southern side of FRA, while meeting the needs of continental Europe's biggest airport so that it will continue to stand tall in international comparison."
The Terminal 3 project will be built in several phases until 2015, in keeping with demand. Thus, FRA's total capacity will eventually expand to about 82 million passengers per year – including about 25 million passengers at Terminal 3 when it is completely finished.
In 2001, a European competition was held for this mega project. Some 46 architectural firms participated in the first phase of the so-called ideas competition for urban development, which focused on a development concept for the southern airport area and the preliminary design for FRA's third passenger facility. The jury selected 20 participants for the second phase of the competition.
Using detailed specifications from Fraport AG, these 20 participants had an opportunity to expand on their original concepts. Finally, unable to choose a clear favorite, the jury awarded three second prizes. Following examination of the submissions in terms of the overall layout of Terminal 3, it was determined that the Norman Foster/NACO consortium of London offered the most practical concept for further development. The Norman Foster/NACO concept was therefore used as the basic concept for Fraport's Airport Master Plan and the zoning procedure.
Thus, the construction parameters for the "airside" were established: a central terminal building with four outstretched finger-like piers. This general concept formed the foundation of the actual realization competition for the new passenger facility, which began in the autumn of 2004. The 10 best architectural firms from the first competition phase were selected to be participants in this realization competition.
The design prerequisites were extremely high: This new passenger building for the 21st century should be cost-effective as well as flexible in its utilization; it should fulfil increased security requirements and allow for efficient and simplified passenger handling processes.
Furthermore, the design must allow for future-oriented concepts for retailing and gastronomy, must be attractive for the airlines, must also serve future generations well, in terms of the necessary sustainability, and finally offer a pleasant atmosphere for both air travellers and airport employees.
The first phase of the competition focused on taxiways, integration of the terminal in the airport's Sky Line people-mover system, parking facilities, and links to the autobahn. The just-completed realization competition focused on harmonious internal functional processes, concepts for retailing and restaurants, and aesthetically pleasing architecture of the new facility. In addition, investment and operating costs played an important part in judging the submissions.
Fraport AG's investment for the Terminal 3 building itself is estimated at approximately €900 million. This does not include the cost of technical systems such as the baggage conveyor system, passenger loading bridges, and an extension of the Sky Line people-mover.
Prof. Klaus Humpert of Freiburg, Germany, led the jury. After the decision, he emphasized that there was a wide variety of qualified concepts – despite the narrow parameters that were necessarily required for the zoning procedure.
Background Information
In addition to the new runway, further passenger and baggage facilities as well as new aircraft maintenance facilities will be required in the future. Plans call for construction of a new passenger terminal in the south of the airport to raise the airport's current 56 million passenger capacity per year by 25 million. The project will include construction of 75 aircraft stands and docking positions and associated taxiways. Already examined in the regional planning procedure, the Terminal 3 project will also be part of the zoning application.

De Snor November 19th, 2006, 10:52 AM After 18 months I guess its time for an update:
NEUE MAINZER 55 - 57
LOCATION:Frankfurt, Banking Distrist, Neue Mainzer Strasse 55 - 57
FLOORS:55
HEIGHT:197m (646.2ft)
ARCHITECT:KSP - Engel & Zimmermann
FACTS:
twin-tower structure, 5th tallest skyscraper in the city
a 9 storey building (already empty) needs to be demolished to make way for the development
project has been approved, construction could start immediately
the office space is currently being marketed
Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) wanted to rent over 400,000 sq ft there, but decided to go with a neighbouring project, the 170m (558ft) OpernTurm, resulting in construction of the 44 storey tower (about to start) - taking up the last big contiguous office space in the Banking District
the chances of finding an anchor-tenant are pretty good, considering the improving real estate market and the shortage of contiguous office space in the financial heart of the city, aswell as the fact that several firms are currently looking for office space in the range of 300,000sq ft or more

Nope, it was designed by UN studios, well I knew it had to be either EEA or UN studios, but more images here (http://www.unstudio.com/projects/name/E/1/241#img5)
De Snor January 31st, 2007, 09:44 PM Who decided to built on that site really ?
C-Beam February 1st, 2007, 01:08 AM The interests of both the city and the ECB fitted, so they came together:
The great market hall (Grossmarkthalle) has always been a problematic object for the city of Frankfurt because it is a landmark building which can't be demolished but on the other hand the city could not afford to spend the money necessary for restauration/conservation during the last decades which left the building in a miserable state.
The ECB on the other hand didn't want to be located in the downtown banking district any longer due to security concerns in the light of 9/11. The new premises should include the possibility to erect a generous security perimeter with a trench to stop vehicles that might be loaded with explosives in a safe distance. The great market hall site offers enough space to realize such plans.

erbse January 29th, 2008, 03:30 PM In the meantime: Fresh information about the Urban Entertainment Center (UEC) near the trade fair and the Messeturm.
Hyatt is going to move into the hotel tower, which will be around 160m. The whole area also consists of an office tower (perhaps around 210m) and, as the name implicits, some sorta entertainment complex.
The article regarding the Hotel Tower:
Vivico and Hyatt conclude agreement for Europaviertel
Frankfurt, 28 January 2008 Vivico and Hyatt International today signed a management agreement for a Grand Hyatt Hotel in the 5 star-plus category. The hotel will take the form of a tower around 150 metres high on the Osloer Strasse in Frankfurt's Europaviertel.
Bernhard H. Hansen, Chief Executive Officer of Vivico, emphasized the following points on signing the agreement: "Vivico is proud of acquiring the highly renowned global operator Hyatt for the prestigious location of Frankfurt and the Europaviertel." Hansen believes Hyatt's investment underscores the quality of the regenerating district and highlights the significance of the Europaviertel for Frankfurt.
"We are delighted that our new hotel will secure a foothold for us in the important banking and conference centre of Frankfurt", said Gebhard Rainer, Managing Director Hyatt International Europe, Africa, Middle East. "Our innovative and modern product which meets the highest international standards is eminently suited to Frankfurt. The Grand Hyatt Frankfurt will form the ideal complement to our existing range of successful hotels in Cologne, Hamburg, Berlin, Mainz, as well as the one due for completion in Düsseldorf in 2010, and will strengthen our position in the German market." To date, the Hyatt Group has only had one premium-brand "Grand Hyatt" hotel in Germany, notably in Berlin.
The conclusion of the agreement was initiated by Viador, a joint venture between the Feuring Group and Vivico, established as recently as 2007. Viador will continue to supervise the project and operations. Vivico will be in charge of constructing the hotel until it is ready for handover in turnkey condition. The next step will be the architectural design; the building application is to be submitted before the end of 2008. The hotel tower is scheduled for completion in 2011/2012.
The tower will cover a gross floor area of approx. 54,300 square metres. Facilities including around 405 rooms, restaurants, bars and a fitness and wellness area put the hotel firmly in the premium category. There are also plans to build a publicly accessible visitor centre offering views of Frankfurt's skyline.
