Interior looks really nice, I wonder about the 'holes' in the 2nd tier though. Do they have any purpose?

GNU January 28th, 2009, 05:08 PM Seems like HOK copied the design they already used at the University of Phoenix Stadium.
That said, I do like it.

LOL ... I remember seeing pictures of this girl all over the internet during the last World Cup in Germany.
BTW, there is a place called Natal in Brazil too? At first I thought this was about a stadium in South Africa for their WC.

Interior looks really nice, I wonder about the 'holes' in the 2nd tier though. Do they have any purpose?
The "holes" seem to be for thermic comfort and air renovation. Natal is almost always sunny ("The Sun City" is its nickname). The temperature there is between 25/30 Celsius (77/86 Fahrenheit) no matter the time of the year (in winter, 20C/68F minimum; in summer, 35C/95F maximum), so it is extremely necessary to have proper ventilation. And the matches will be at noon!
If you go (and if you go you`ll have a wonderful time, cause the city is beautiful, the people friendly, warm and nice, the food excellent), use sunscreen all times!

Jim856796 May 14th, 2010, 11:26 AM The Arena das Dunas, which is sort of like a cross between the University of Phoenix Stadium and the San Nicola Stadium, will replace the existing Cláudio Vasconcelos de Machado Stadium, or Machadao.
http://mavalem.sites.uol.com.br/rn/Machadao3.jpg
The Machadao Stadium, the Machadinho Arena, and several other buildings will be demoed for the Dunas Arena.
Zizu Oliveira August 21st, 2011, 06:43 AM Finally, work has begun for the new arena!
The earthworks started this week in the areas adjacent to the old stadium and the foundations to the new one will start there. Since most of the new stadium won't be in the old one area, they decided to not implode it and take it down mechanically.

DimitriB August 22nd, 2011, 09:19 AM Are they also going to build a new indoor arena near the stadium? Because now the arena is going to be demolished
Neda Say October 23rd, 2011, 01:18 PM I'm thinking of going back to Natal for 2013 not that the world cup is not exciting enough just that I could get used to spending a ridiculous amount of time at the beach drinking, surfing, eating, chatting the locals... enjoying myself stupid in these dunes...
Nice stadium too! Really, cherry on top!
Zizu Oliveira November 3rd, 2011, 07:31 AM Are they also going to build a new indoor arena near the stadium? Because now the arena is going to be demolished
A little late to answer but as far as I know, no, it won't be built a new one..
Update: The indoor arena doesn't exist anymore and the stadium began to be taken down. Also, they drew the lines of where the future field will be set to help visualize:
